Lucha Underground Executive Producer Talks Show Format, Vampiro, Working In WWE

0

Lucha Underground’s co-executive producer Chris DeJoseph was on a recent episode on Busted Open Radio, where he talked about working with Lucha Underground, and WWE. You can read the highlights below:

Lucha Underground’s format:

“It was always the plan to make it an hour. That’s where we’re starting at. I sometimes have to pinch myself and remind myself that we have only aired 21 episodes or 22 episodes. So we’re very young in terms of wrestling, and in terms of other wrestling shows out there. We take baby steps. I like the one hour format. I wrote for WWE where you had to write 2 hours of Raw, 2 hours of SmackDown, Main Event, Velocity, Heat. I think at one point we were writing 8 hours of television a week. Creatively it’s tough to keep up with that type of schedule, especially the way Connecticut changes things on the fly. Here, we’re generally more focused, we have an hour we can give you just enough and leave you wanting more and that’s kind of fun. Today, with television shows and Netflix, and Hulu, they have time to sit down and invest for a brief amount of time. I think if you can come in and tell a good story in an hour, people can accept that. Three hours is an awful long time to have a fan or audience member invested. It’s a tough task for them and I’m glad I don’t have to do that every week.”

Rumors of Vampiro being hard to work with:

“It’s not difficult at all to work with Vampiro. He’s one of the guys who is most invested in wanting to see Lucha Underground succeed. He loves working on the show, and we asked him to be a color commentator and he had never done that before. It’s a lot different being a broadcaster than being a performer in the ring. It took him a little while to get his feet wet, but he’s really coming into his own as a character on the show and as a commentator with Matt Striker. He’s kind of learning the ropes. He does the Spanish, he does the English, he’s been an agent for matches. He eats and sleeps Lucha Underground.”

Who had the idea of Big Dick Johnson in WWE?:

“Not mine. It all started as DX was coming back and we knew that, and we were going have tricks be played on Vince McMahon. He was going to walk through this hallway and run into a bunch of different things. I think it was a space alien, a guy with a p—s pump, and a Mariachi band. I think they scratched the Mariachi band and someone said “What if he runs into a group of male strippers?” Then someone added “Well, what if one is a chubby male stripper?” Then someone pointed to me and said “What if DJ was it? What if it was DJ”. I think I turned bright red and said ‘Oh my god’, then Vince looked at me and was like “Yeah that sounds good”. At that point you’re in a meeting with a bunch of people you look up to, you’ve got Arn Anderson and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and everyone is turning their heads looking at you and you’re like “Yeah, well sure, I’ll do it”. Originally it was supposed to be a lot tamer than it was, but I got reeled in by Triple H and Bruce Prichard into going all the way and squirting baby oil all over Vince’s $3,000 suit. After that I think Hunter told me like “You never know you might get booked” Who knows what will happen? And I think the next week Paul Heyman put me in a match against The Sandman on Easter. I tried to keep it a secret for a while, I didn’t even tell my family and then I think I told my Mom on Christmas, that was my gift for her.”

DeJoseph goes on to talk at length about his work with Lucha Underground, as well as his favorite angles while working for WWE. You can listen to the full podcast at this link.

Destination America Becoming A Significant Problem In TNA, Problems Between TNA And Taz

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Another significant problem within TNA right now is Destination America. The Wrestling Observer reports that the network is reportedly calling a lot of the shots in TNA these days with the idea that they are paying TNA and running so many hours of their programming.

Destination America officials reportedly do not like TNA Impact Wrestling being taped from the UK. They do not know the pro wrestling business at all but they didn’t like the idea of TV taped outside of America airing on their Destination America channel. Destination America may not have a problem with TNA running a yearly tour overseas but they have made it clear they want Impact taped in the US most of the time.

We noted before that Destination America officials wanted Kurt Angle to be the World Heavyweight Champion as they liked the idea of the champion on their network being an American gold medalist. They also are high on Taryn Terrell as Knockouts Champion because of her look.

We noted earlier that Taz missed the recent set of TNA Impact Wrestling tapings and that repercussions could be coming for him. It wasn’t the actual TV tapings he missed but a voice-over session in Nashville to record commentary for the Impact episodes that have been taped.

PWInsider reports that there are issues between TNA and Taz, who has removed all references to TNA from his Twitter page. The reported TNA pay issues apparently led to Taz refusing to get on his flight from New York to Nashville.

Regarding the commentary for Impact, Josh Mathews reportedly worked alone for the episode that will air this Friday night but that could change as they may edit it again with commentary from a second person. For what it’s worth, TNA recently tried Al Snow out as an announcer.

WWE announced that Jey Uso has underwent successful surgery to repair recent injuries he suffered at the WrestleMania 31 Kickoff Pre-show.

WWE’s Dr. Stephen Daquino commented:

“At WrestleMania, Jey suffered an anterior shoulder dislocation on the left arm, which was later evaluated back in Florida. It looks like [his] return is estimated [at] about six months.”

They also noted Jey had surgery last week to tighten his rotator cuff and shoulder capsule to repair the injury, which had been aggravating him leading into WrestleMania.

Triple H And The WWE Passes On Offering Briscoes A Deal

0

The Briscoes are expected to stay with ROH. Triple H passed on offering them a deal after becoming aware of the homophobic slurs they had made on social media in the past. WWE Senior Director of Talent Development Canyon Cemen had been the one communicating with the Briscoes, and recommended that WWE pass on them.

Ring of Honor recently made an offer to the Briscoes that included more money. Word is that the new offer is a two year deal. I also heard that at one point there was talk of the offer including a deal to have Jay Briscoe taking the reigns as booker, although I’m not sure if the final contract has the booker provision or if Jay is even interested in it. A similar deal had also been pitched to Adam Cole, who also has a contract expiring. It should be noted that current ROH booker Hunter Johnston (Delirious) has indicated that he is not going anywhere.

Update On Why Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan Had Surgery Today, How Long He’s Going To Be Away For

0

“Mean” Gene Okerlund revealed that WWE Hall of Famer Bobby “The Brain” Heenan successfully underwent an important surgery earlier today.

T-Mart Promotions noted on their Facebook that Heenan’s wife informed them earlier that “The Brain” fell last night and broke his hip. This is why he had surgery today and is currently in recovery.

It looks like Heenan will not be able to make appearances for several months. Due to the accident, Heenan was forced to pull out of his Legends of the Ring and Wrestling Universe Store appearances on Sunday, September 21st.

WWE Now Giving Letter Grades To Each City They Run In – A, B+, B And C Cities Revealed

0

– As noted over the weekend, information in a lawsuit filed by WWE in California last month to stop unlicensed merchandise being sold by outside vendors during WrestleMania 31 week included the full WWE schedule through March 28th, 2016, including the future pay-per-view locations and dates for NXT specials that we posted. Chris “Mookie” Harrington has recapped some more of the information and it was revealed WWE will be assigning letter codes to each city they visit – A, B+, B and C. It appears the grades are for the overall drawing power of the city based on WWE’s previous visit. Some cities appear in more than one category because different letter grades are assigned on different trips, sometimes because one visit is a TV taping and another visit is for a live event.

Harrington gave this breakdown:

A: 70 examples (minimum: 3,500; maximum 15,913) – average: 9,235
B+: 32 examples (minimum: 3,122; maximum 14,481) – average: 7,608
B: 48 examples (minimum: 2,626; maximum 12,717) – average: 6,496
C: 61 examples (minimum: 2,230; maximum 6,996) – average 4,546
Overall Average: 7,002
