Daniel Bryan Suffers Concussion on Raw

0

It’s been making the rounds today, but we wanted to wait until it was confirmed. It’s now been reported that a WWE representative has confirmed that WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan did indeed suffer a concussion Monday night on WWE Raw during the Steel Cage Match against the Usos.

There has been no report on WWE.com confirming Bryan’s alleged injury, however, a reputable source has come forward and confirmed the injury. There is no word yet on how long Bryan will be out for but WWE.com will most likely provide an update at some point tomorrow. Bryan will likely undergo a battery of tests before he’s permitted to return to the ring. This could really screw up some WrestleMania plans.

If you want one man’s opinion, these concussion tests are starting to get out of control.

Mae Young Passes Away

0

One of the original grand ladies of wrestling, Johnnie Mae Young, had recently been placed under Hospice Care at her home in South Carolina due to an undisclosed illness that overcame her in late December. Since then, Mae has been reported as being very weak and gravely ill.

It’s with a heavy heart that I now have the responsibility to announce that Mae Young has passed away. This was confirmed via Stephanie McMahon’s Twitter account. Stephanie wrote, “A true pioneer and legend has passed tonight, Long live the memory of my friend and WWE Hall of Famer.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and long time fans of one of the true original queens of professional wrestling.

Mae’s last appearance on TV was part of a WWE “Old School” Raw from March 4, 2013. Mae Young was featured in a segment where several performers celebrated her 90th birthday, until former WWE Champion CM Punk crashed the party. After the show Vince McMahon and Triple H presented her a replica of the WWE Divas Championship, which had been made for Mae’s birthday. They proclaimed her to be “Forever, The Divas Champion.”

WWE Released the following statement on the passing of Mae,

WWE is greatly saddened by the news that WWE Hall of Famer Mae Young, beloved member of the WWE family and oldest living squared circle personality, has passed at the age of 90.

Johnnie Mae Young was truly one of the greatest female competitors to ever lace up a pair of boots. A proud competitor for three quarters of a century and valued part of WWE to her last day, Young truly blazed a path for future female grapplers beginning in the 1940s.

From the moment she first stepped through the ropes, Young established herself as one of the most active and successful female Superstars – including becoming the first U.S. Women’s Champion, carrying out one of the most storied rivalries of the time with the legendary Mildred Burke in 1954 and being among the first female competitors to tour post-war Japan.

In addition to her contributions inside the ring, Young played a huge part in training the Superstars of tomorrow, including late, great Hall of Famer The Fabulous Moolah – the longest reigning champion in sports-entertainment history.

In recent years, Young’s career received the recognition it deserved. In 2005, she and several of her contemporaries were profiled in “Lipstick and Dynamite,” a documentary film about the early pioneers of women’s wrestling. In 2008, Young joined co-star, trainee and late friend Moolah and “Sensational” Sherri Martel in the highest class of Superstars, as she became only the third female to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at that time.

The entire WWE Universe offers a standing ovation to a true queen of the canvas and bids Mae Young a heartfelt farewell.”

RIP… Johnnie Mae Young

Complete Smackdown Spoilers for 1-17-14

0

WWE Smackdown Tapings for 1-17-14 Taped 1-14-14 from the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

– The Miz joins Michael Cole & JBL for commentary. Doesn’t that sound appetizing?

* Non-Title: WWE Tag Champions Cody Rhodes & Goldust vs. The New Age Outlaws. Your typical match to behin, until Vickie Guerrero shows up and starts babbling about the Royal Rumble for no reason. Vickie talks about how it’s friend on friend, and brother against brother. Cody becomes distracted and Billy Gunn rolls up Rhodes for the pin. Kind of a lame finish but I assume this is going somewhere.

– CM Punk backstage, calls out all three members of the Shield for tonight!

– In the ring, Paul Heyman cuts a promo on the Big Show, stating that he’s not afraid of Show because Lesnar won’t let Show do anything to Paul. Heyman announces that Lesnar will be at Raw next week. Paul runs down the Big Show until Show comes down to ringside. Heyman takes off running to get far away from Show. Big Show then shows footage of him tossing Lesnar from Raw last week and says that next week on Raw he’s going to KO Brock Lesnar!

* For some reason, Eva Marie ring announces the next match but the funny thing is the audio goes out on her half way in. I don’t know if this is supposed to be part of a Total Divas storyline or what. Anyway we have a rematch from Raw of Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio. Mysterio cuts a promo and mentions Batista but Del Rio attacks him to start the match. Lots of back and forth. Del Rio works on Rey’s knee. Rey hits 619 but Del Rio blocks the splash with his knees. Mysterio blocks a kick and rolls Del Rio up for the win. After the match, Del Rio beats Rey down. Del Rio locks Rey in the cross armbreaker and won’t let up until the referee breaks it.

* Naomi vs. Tamina Snuka. Cameron and AJ Lee are at ringside. Cameron attacks AJ at ringside and beats her down. Naomi gets the win after a springboard flip off the ropes.

– The Wyatt Family make their way out as fans chant for Daniel Bryan. Bray says he wanted to grow up like his father but he was never good enough so he was cast out of his fathers kingdom to walk among the sheep. Bray says he was destined for greater things. He crawled out of the hole and Sister Abigail saved him. She sang sweet songs to him and he became enthralled with her. As he laid there on RAW, Bray realized he needed to sacrifice himself to be reborn and become the creature he wants to be. Bray says he gave Bryan a chance to walk with the reapers but now he will burn. Great promo.

– CM Punk is back with Renee Young. He says he’s calling out The Shield AND The New Age Outlaws, all five of them. She asks if that’s career suicide and he says it’s a gift for The Authority to do what they want.

* The Bella Twins announce the next match, now I’m really assuming this is for Total Divas. How worthless. Anyway, we have Fandango vs. Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston. A nothing match. Lagnston wins with the Big Ending.

– Promo: Batista Returns next Monday Night

– Ultimate Warrior Hall of Fame Video

– Backstage Interview with the Shield discussing CM Punk

* Aksana is our next Diva to play ring announcer. The Usos vs. The Real Americans (Swagger & Cesaro) . Zeb Colter is out with his boys, so at least they didn’t write him out. Zeb’s in a wheelchair courtesy of the Big Show on Raw. The Usos are taped up to sell the Cage match from Raw. Zeb cuts a promo. Match was OK. Usos get the win as expected.

– Up next, CM Punk heads to the ring to call out the Shield & The N.A.O!

– Punk says unlike The Authority, he isn’t a coward. Punk runs down Triple H, saying he hides behind his wife. The Shield’s music hits and they come through the crowd. The New Age Outlaws come from the ramp. They all surround the ring. Kane’s pyro goes off and out he comes. He tells everyone to stand down. Kane says Punk’s anger is misplaced and The Authority wants him to main event WrestleMania, that’s why he’s in the Royal Rumble. Kane gives his word that his new directive is to make sure Punk has the respect he deserves. Kane leaves but Punk calls him back and insults him. Kane says “get ’em boys” and Punk is beat down. Kane chokeslams Punk and stands over him before heading to the back and ending the show.  Wow, talk about the total opposite of the Raw ending. How lame.

That’s it ladies and gents, til next time.

WWE to Induct WrestleMania MATCH into Hall of Fame?

0

Roddy Piper isn’t the only WrestleMania legend that the WWE has been working with to sort out their past issues. Rumors are running rampant that the WWE is currently in negotiations with Mr. T in order to induct the main event of the very first WrestleMania into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2014.

Mr. T had reportedly turned down past offers to join the Hall of Fame after names like Pete Rose made it in before him. Things may have changed since then.

Should the deal come to fruition, that would mean the quartet of Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff would inducted into the HoF for said match, with the potential addition of Bob Orton & Jimmy Snuka who acted as corner men. This would be the second Hall of Fame induction for everyone involved, besides T.

WWE Main Event Spoilers for 1-15-14

Dark Match

* Alexander Rusev beat Tyson Kidd by submission with the Camel Clutch. Prior to the start of the match, Rusev cut a heel promo in his native Bulgarian. The promo got a lot of heel heat in response.

WWE Main Event Taping for 1-15-14

* Kofi Kingston defeated Curtis Axel with a rollup. After the match, Ryback’s music hit and he comes out, walks around the ring, and then just leaves. Clearly they’re beginning to build on the “nut job” Ryback gimmick.

* Damien Sandow defeated Sin Cara with the “You’re Welcome” Full Nelson Slam. Sandow was in his hometown so he got a positive reaction from many of the fans. During the match, Ryback came out AGAIN and walked around the ring, messing with the fans.

– Bad News Barrett promo announcing that he will be in the Royal Rumble.

– Ryback came out to his music yet again and did a lap around the ring before the next match.

* The Prime Time Players beat The 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, and Drew McIntyre)  in a 3 vs. 2 handicap match.

– Following the match, 3MB demanded that the match be restarted but Brad Maddox came out and denied their request. Instead Maddox gave them a 6-man tag match against Los Matadores, up next. Apparently, Maddox has free reign over every show now?

* Los Matadores and El Torito defeated The 3MB with their double team finisher. El Torito got a hot tag during the match and cleaned house.

After the main event, Ryback came out for the FOURTH TIME and walked around ringside, AGAIN.

WWE Network to host the Return of Tough Enough?

1

With Vince McMahon announcing that the WWE Network would feature “Reality TV” shows as part of their programming, the rumor mill has started running. It appears that one of those shows could be the return of Tough Enough.

Former Tough Enough and Current NXT trainer Bill DeMott tweeted the following this evening: “This can only mean one thing……. Who thinks they are #ToughEnough”

Make of that what you will…

WWE Conference Call – Features lots of WWE Network News

Michael Weitz of WWE investor relations kicked off the conference call and read through the legalities.

-Vince McMahon thanked the investors for sticking with them as they figured out the best direction for WWE Network . He said they came close to going with other models, but he feels they now have “the right model.” He stressed that they are not advocating that anyone “cut the cord” and are instead giving their clients and alternative. “Our audience will be blown away by the way you can actually use our network ,” McMahon said. Vince said the network will increase television ratings for USA “or whoever we are with.” He said that what is good for WWE is good for everyone in the aggregate.

-Vince turned the call over to Barrios, who read through the presentation. He stressed that network subscribers will get “a scheduled network” and an on-demand option . He added that they will get “never seen” footage and a personalized VOD (video on deman) recommendation based on their viewing behavior. Barrios said online viewing is expected to overtake traditional television viewing over the next few years.

-Barrios noted that the $9.99 price tag is comparable to other “over the top” models such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. He said their numbers tell them that 41 million homes have an active WWE fan. He said passionate WWE fans spend the most time consuming online video and are most likely to be the early subscribers.

-Barrios ran through the basics of the network , including launch date and the previously advertised content. He also spoke about partnering with MLB Advanced Media, plus he stated that they have engaged Harte Hanks to provide “best-in-class customer service.”

-Barrios ran through the economic factor and said the hope is that the phase one countries generate incremental OIBDA of $25 million to $85 million.

-The listed goal is for WWE Network to attract “at least one million subscribers” by the end of 2014. A second quarter 2014 goal is to produce a live daily studio show. They hope to “initiate launch” in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong , and the Nordic countries (though early 2015 is also listed as an option ). They opened up for questions from callers.

-A caller questioned the idea that the network will increase viewership for USA and Syfy. He noted that they will also replay some of the content on the network. He questioned how the network would not be cannibalistic. Vince stressed that the key is that Raw is live . “It’s the live value that means that much to them,” he said. He stated that USA Network also believes this will increase television ratings. “It will increase the overall awareness of WWE exponentially,” Vince said. He stressed again that it’s not just a WWE view, but also a USA Network view.

-Barrios noted that they are in the exclusive window of negotiations with USA Network and hope to have an announcement regarding their next television deal in April.

-Barrios said MLB is providing a service for WWE. He noted that it’s not an equity participation.

-A caller asked if they have thought about trying to bundle the service. Barrios said they thought about a variety of models and believe this is the best route. He said they are tiering their content with live programming and then a second tier via WWE Network .

-The same caller asked if they have considered giving WWE live event ticket buyers a free subscription to the network and other cross promotion. Barrios said they are not going to give away all their secrets. He stressed that they will be giving away one week of WWE Network for free. Vince jumped in and stressed that the free week will not be a pay-per-view week.

-The next caller questioned the research of the fan base and what percentage demonstrated an affinity to pay for something like the network . Barrios said that is listed in the presentation, and he noted that they did a lot of testing on the price point. Vince said the positive response to WWE Network has been overwhelming.

-The caller asked why people can’t sign up for the network now. Barrios mentioned “contractual gymnastics.” He said one of the downsides is that people are going to be champing at the bit to sign up, but they feel this is the best way to go.

-Vince said they remain hopeful that their normal pay-per-view providers will continue to carry pay-per-view events. The caller asked for an update on what the pay-per-view carriers are saying. Barrios noted what DirecTV said, but said he didn’t want to get into all of it and that they will continue working and talking with the carriers.

-Barrios noted that if they get to the two to three million subscriber point they will be investing heavily in the content.

-The next caller questioned why they are comfortable with the cannibalization up to $60 million. He asked whether a subscriber could sign up for six months, get WrestleMania and all the other pay-per-views and contents, and then cancel. Barrios said that in theory they could. He said he has confidence in the way they execute. He said he’s had the benefit of playing with live prototypes and he can’t believe that once people have access that they will want to back out.

-A caller noted that the numbers they have laid out do not include sponsorship. Barrios said that is correct, but noted they have some creative ideas.

-A caller asked if they will consider a discounted lengthier subscription . He also asked about potential pay options for chats with stars, etc. Barrios noted that the network will be available in gift form. Barrios said the second screen app for the network will be the best around and stressed that they are the best value in entertainment “and that goes with the $9.99.”

-A caller asked how they reached the $9.99 price point. Barrios said they did a lot of testing. He said they regularly ask how they can give their customers more value. He said they also considered how much content and came to that number. The caller asked if they worry that they have lowered the value of their own content by going with the number they did. “Not at all,” Barrios said.

-There were no further questions, so Weitz closed out the conference call.
