(Larry’s thoughts…It wasn’t a huge deal, but it reconfirmed to me that I was making the correct decision in leaving the St. Louis Wrestling Club. Rick Martel was really starting to catch on and I felt – Sam agreed for what it’s worth, although he had resigned as consultant – that Rick might have potential as a fiery, young baby face in main events. I talked to Rick early that day and we decided to recreate what happened when Johnny Valentine “arrived” late {Edouard Carpentier had also done it once} for a match with Dick the Bruiser more than 25 years before. I wanted Rick to replace Spike Huber after a few minutes, since Rick was the scheduled foe for Ox Baker, and while still in street clothes defeat Ox in less than a minute – Ox jumping Rick, Martel making comeback hot and fast, then the pin. Martel even came to Kiel Auditorium late and ran to the ring with his suitcase in hand. But – Bob Geigel would not go along with the pin. Bob said we had to protect Ox because they were doing something with him in KC {so why would a non-TV bout in St. Louis matter?} and we should do something with Baker in St. Louis. Thus, after wasted time debating how far Martel could go in St. Louis and being told a DQ was plenty, we had to settle for the disqualification. With all due respect to Ox, how many times had he lost in almost twenty years coming to St. Louis? He wasn’t getting younger, and he wasn’t getting quicker. Martel had excellent potential and an exciting, unexpected finish like planned could have helped him. Instead, Ox threw Martel over the top rope, and the crowd went “ho hum” after first getting all stirred up. St. Louis was no longer the primary focus of the promotion. It was indeed time to go.)

1/22/83 – “Wrestling at the Chase”

King Kong Brody won a handicap tag bout from Roger Kirby and Bill Rose by pinning Rose

NWA Champion Ric Flair defeated Mando Barerra
Cowboy Bob Orton defeated Raoul Guzman two straight falls

2/11/83 – Checkerdome (Attendance: 16,695)
NWA Champion Ric Flair went to a one-hour draw with King Kong Brody. Brody won the first fall, Flair won the second when Brody was counted out on the apron, and time expired during the third fall.
Giant Baba defeated Harley Race for the PWF title
Missouri Champion Kerry Von Erich defeated Greg Valentine
Cowboy Bob Orton and Dick Murdoch defeated Dick the Bruiser and Bulldog Bob Brown when Orton defeated Brown
Butch Reed defeated Bobby Duncum
Ken Patera defeated Ox Baker
Rick Martel, Bill Cody and Buzz Tyler defeated Kim Duk, Dewey Robertson and Crusher Ayala when Martel defeated Ayala
Roger Kirby defeated Manny Fernandez
(Larry’s thoughts… I actually notified the partners I was done the day after The Checkerdome show. They were shocked even after our difficult year together. Truthfully, I was sick about it myself. Harley Race, Bob Geigel, and Pat O’Connor all did their best with what they knew about wrestling; sadly, their background was totally different from mine with Sam Muchnick. But the future in St. Louis, especially without Sam as the balance point, looked bleak. In the end, I had no status as a stockholder if the promotion drifted more and more in a direction opposite from what St. Louis had always been. Plus, the NWA was a shadow of what it had been. For me, it was time to move in a different direction.)

2/13/83 –”Wrestling at the Chase”

Manny Fernandez and Bulldog Bob Brown defeated Ox Baker and Hercules Hernandez when Hernandez defeated Fernandez
Buzz Tyler defeated Bobby Duncum via DQ
Mark Romero and Spike Huber defeated The Convict (Jerry Brown) and Yasu Fuji when Romero defeated The Convict
Larry Matysik resigned from the St. Louis Wrestling Club on 2/12 and left after the above card, leaving the company with no local representation though he did do television commentary through  March. Matysik started his own independent promotion later that spring. Ratings and attendance figures fell immediately for the St. Louis Wrestling Club, which was informed in the fall that “Wrestling at the Chase” would be cancelled at the end of 1983. The World Wrestling Federation, which Matysik joined in February 1984, took over the old time slot of “Wrestling at the Chase” on Channel 11 in January 1984. The glory era of wrestling in St. Louis was officially finished.
