Video Review: WCW SuperBrawl 2000

WCW SuperBrawl 2000
February 20, 2000 in San Francisco, CA
Announcers: Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay, and Mark Madden

This was the next to last SuperBrawl, with probably one of the wildest most unique cards I’ve ever seen on a WCW show.

1. Tournament Final for the WCW Cruiserweight Title: Lash LeRoux vs. The Artist – 3
Let’s set the stage at how ridiculous WCW was at the time and how this tournament was set up. We had Oklahoma, who was nowhere near the classification of “cruiserweight”, relinquishing the title on TV. Not sure why but anyone in their right mind could’ve predicted Oklahoma would be a colossal failure. Anyway, there was a tournament held to crown a new champion which boiled down to Lash and The Artist. Who exactly is the Artist? Well, he was once known as Prince Iaukea if that helps any. Dragon screw leg whip from the Artist looked like it nearly ripped Lash’s knee out. Paisley spent a good portion of the match standing on the apron and nobody seemed to notice. Best move of the match was Artist’s leaping DDT off the middle rope for the win. Other than that, the match was nothing special and Lash looked pretty sloppy.

2. WCW Hardcore Title: Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Brian Knobbs – 2
Time to get extreme! Unfortunately there wasn’t really anything extreme about this. The crowd brawl felt pretty pointless that wound up back in a concourse with Knobbs going through a catering table. Mark Madden on commentary asked about the tables under the ring and Schiavone responded with a comment saying “I don’t know but whoever makes tables is making a good living off of WCW right now!”. Perhaps if they hadn’t spent all that money on tables, they might still be in business. Knobbs took a table bump, trash can lids to the head, and Bigelow’s finisher but Bigelow never went for a cover. Finish had Finlay distracting Bigelow with Knobbs coming out, knocking him out, and pinning him randomly on the floor.

3. Handicap Match: Three Count vs. Norman Smiley – 3
I always sort of liked Norman’s antics, especially when he was wrestling for the Hardcore Title. Three Count may not have been the well versed grapplers but damn they can bump like crazy. Moore got some huge hang time on a big backdrop to the outside and Helms took a scary bump on a wacky jump off the top rope and landed right on his head. Looked like he did some type of kamikaze type move. Not sure if three count was supposed to be tagging in and out because their just coming in, doing something wacky, and leaving. This was just a free-for-all that seemed pretty much like filler.

4. The Demon vs. The Wall – 3
It’s announced that this is one of the “featured matches” of the show. Umm, ok? Demon comes out in this wild looking casket covered in spikes that looked like something that you’d find in one of those seasonal Halloween stores. Only a few highlights here with Demon hitting a nice springboard clothesline and Wall taking a slam off the top and landed right on his neck. Wall got the pin after about four minutes of what felt like a Thunder main event. Good to know they invested all that money in Demon only for him to get pinned clean in his pay-per-view debut.

5. Leather Jacket on a Pole Match: Tank Abbott vs. Big Al – 2
This a mystery that will pretty much haunt me until the end of time … who the hell is/was Big Al and where the hell did he come from? As Madden said on commentary, this was “brawling and bad language”. There was this bit right on the opening bell where they try to tie their hands together with a belt, which is promptly screwed up by Al dropping said belt. Lots and lots of punching. Holy fuck, what the hell happened at the end? Abbott was climbing the ropes and it looked like he dropped Al when he got to the top rope and Al took a fucking nutty bump and kills himself by taking a header right on the steps and falls in a heap to the floor. Abbott looks at the carnage, pretty much shrugs his shoulders, and climbs up to grab the jacket. Afterwards, he pulls a KINFE~! on an unconscious Al and threatens to “fucking kill him” as Schiavone claims the giant Bowie knife is a pair of scissors. What lunacy.

6. Big T vs. Booker T – 2
The stipulation here is that the winner acquires the rights to the Harlem Heat name. Unfortunately, Big T is not representing the family restaurant that was two blocks from my childhood home, it’s Ahmed Johnson plus about 100 pounds. For some reason, I think Booker T wrestling in a restaurant would be more interesting. Ahmed took a big sidekick and sold it like he tripped backwards off a curb. Booker gets the advantage, goes for a pin, then the lights go out and then come back on with a dude on the apron, weighing an easy 450, distracting Booker, thus allowing Ahmed to hit a Pearl River Plunge. Second straight match with some weird ass finish. Who was that large man?

A quick note if you’re keeping track, we’re just over halfway through the show and no match has broken the ten minute mark, with most of them going about five to six minutes each. So far this show has felt like an extended edition of Nitro, which was not really a good thing. Let’s see if the second half is any better.

7. Vampiro vs. Billy Kidman – 4
I’m hoping this will be a good match with no bullshit. The pace was good from the opening bell and stayed pretty steady throughout the whole match. Vampiro hit a couple big moves including a big suplex off the top rope and a toss powerbomb. Kidman wasn’t much on the offensive and when he was, it wasn’t all that great. I liked how Mark Madden predicted that this would “be a U.S. title match in a year and a World title match in two years”. Too bad WCW itself only had just over a year left to survive. Not sure what the finish was supposed to be but it looked like some Scorpion Death Drop move from the top rope but pretty much ended in disaster as both dudes landed really awkwardly. Not a bad match, certainly better from some of the droll before it but still felt like they were just cruising through.

8. Sicilian Stretcher Match for the WCW Tag Team Titles: The Mamalukes vs. David Flair & Crowbar – 5
I’ve got a feeling this is going to be wild as there are stretchers, garbage cans, wheelchairs, and other assorted paraphernalia on the outside. Looks like maybe they raided some medical storage warehouse. Also, a question, what exactly makes these specific stretchers used here Sicilian? Where they perhaps made in Sicily? I’ll be honest here, there was so much wild stuff going on that I had a hell of a time keeping so my notes on this are a little sporadic. Crowbar did a big dive to the outside onto Johnny the Bull who was laid out on a stretcher that looked like it hurt both dudes really bad. People are brawling and fighting everywhere, including Daffney and Disco Inferno. Schiavone at one point on commentary says “this is the damndest thing I’ve ever seen”. Well, OK. Apparently this is elimination as Flair got taped … yes, taped as in the Mamalukes were using masking tape … to a stretcher and rolled out of the arena. Match really started to drag at the end as all the guys were just completely gassed and it was only ten minutes. Crowbar was eliminated after two table spots and again taped to a stretcher and wheeled out by a gaggle of referees.

9. Texas Death Match: Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk – 7
Eleven years after their legendary feud, these two were still at it and even though they were older and perhaps a little slower, they still went out there and put on one hell of a wild match. The rules are like the old style death matches where once you get a pinfall, the person who was pinned has to answer the referee’s ten count. Flair took some wicked stuff on the floor including a number of suplexes and a piledriver. Funk took some punishment of his own, including some nasty, nasty chops from Flair. This feels like an old 1980’s NWA brawl where they are just killing themselves all over the arena. Flair took perhaps one of the most dangerous and sickening spots in his career in this match by taking an old school Memphis style back-cracking, neck-breaking, spine-tingling piledriver that just jammed his head and neck right into the mat. Probably one of the sickest piledrivers I’ve ever seen. It was such a crazy, dangerous, and wild spot that I rewound at least 3-4 times to watch it again. If anything else, you have to at least see this match just for that spot. I’m not sure how Flair got up, hell, I’m not sure if he wasn’t even knocked somewhat loopy, but he managed to trip Funk off the top rope causing him to crash through a table and get counted down by the referee. This was just a completely violent and brutal match as these two just absolutely murdered each other.

10. Hulk Hogan vs. Lex Luger – 3
If you’re looking for a classic then this will not be the match for you. However, if you’re looking for a match between two guys still stuck using old 90’s moves and not selling a damn thing, then you’ve got your match. Hogan rushed the ring during the intros and we got a stiff brawl. By stiff though, I don’t mean Japanese stiff hard-hitting style, I mean two stiff and immobile dudes working each other with clotheslines, punches, and basic big man offense. The story here was Hogan was going for revenge on Luger breaking his arm but that fact seemed to be forgotten once the match started. Match was totally lame and also featured interference from Jimmy Hart, Miss Elizabeth, Ric Flair, and Sting. This felt like some kind of 90s reunion on an indy show somewhere.

11. No DQ Triple Threat Match for the WCW World Title: Scott Hall vs. Sid Vicious vs. Jeff Jarrett – 1
Almost immediately the bullshit starts with the Harris Brothers trying to interfere. Two minutes later we get the first ref bump of the match after which these guys start going for random near falls. Another ref bump after the referee fails to count a fall and Jarrett assaults him, followed by two more ref bumps right in a row. This is rapidly going down the crapper. Everything is focused on Jarrett here and Sid and Hall are pretty much an afterthought. Wait, what the fuck? Where the hell did Roddy Piper come from? My god, this is a terrible match. Piper nails the heel ref who came down after the previous ref bumps, Sid issues a powerbomb to Hall, Piper counts the fall and this is over. I feel like I not only just watched a bad Nitro main event but an elongated edition of Nitro.

Results from the NXT Tapings @ Full Sail University on 2/28/14. The following matches to air on 3/13/14. Thanks to Zack Zimmerman for the following:

Tom Phillips, Tensai, Alex Riley on commentary. Tensai was announced as “Jason Albert”.

* NXT Women’s Champion Paige beat Sasha Banks (w/Charlotte) in a non-title match with her kneeling cloverleaf chickenwing stretch. Fine match. Charlotte attacked Paige after the match until Natalya’s music hit and she made the save.

* NXT Tag Champions The Ascension beat Travis Tyler and Cal Bishop in a non-title match. The Ascension went over with The Fall of Man.

* Mason Ryan beat Wesley Blake with the cobra clutch slam.

* Alexander Rusev (w/Lana) beat Xavier Woods. Rusev won with the Accolade.

* Bo Dallas beat Colin Cassady with a double-underhook DDT. This went way longer than it needed to. Not very good.

AMC Network Interested in PURCHASING the WWE?

0

SeekingAlpha.com sent out a WWE alert this afternoon that says WWE stock spiked this afternoon in mid-day trading based on a rumor that AMC Networks is interested in buying WWE.

There’s no word yet about the rumor of AMC being interested in buying WWE. We know that WWE recently talked with AMC about their TV distribution but the note from SeekingAlpha.com is the first we’ve heard of AMC being interested in purchasing the company.

—————————————————–

UPDATE: – The rumors of AMC Networks being interested in purchasing WWE comes from the Betaville blog. They wrote:

“Good sources tell me cable group AMC Networks has been sniffing around World Wrestling Entertainment Inc, the US-listed company behind those ridiculous wrestling programmes, such as WWF, Raw and Smackdown.

AMC Networks has held at least one exploratory conversation with WWE – which saw its shares rise by about 30pc during last week – about some kind M&A transaction in recent months, according to “people familiar with the matter”. However, the talks are understood to have not gone anywhere.

Another source said bankers from UBS have been advising AMC Networks, owner of Sundance TV, on a potential deal and financing options.

This well-placed source said any transaction may value WWE at between $2.6 and $2.8bn.”

It should be noted that a deal between WWE and AMC is by no means a certainty. The chances of WWE selling are very slim. WWE’s George Barrios told Bloomberg last week that the company is not in merger talks.

WWE Reacts to CM Punk on “Talking Dead” Show

0

– As noted, CM Punk will be appearing on AMC’s The Talking Dead this coming Sunday night – his first appearance since walking out of WWE last month. There is some bitterness within WWE towards Punk for appearing on the show. There’s a feeling backstage that if he could go to Los Angeles for that show, he could have at least came to RAW in his hometown of Chicago to talk to someone face to face. There’s also a feeling of uncertainty because nobody knows what Punk is going to say about his WWE status, if anything at all.

Mickie James and Stacy Keibler BOTH Pregnant?

0

A new article on Examiner.com states that TNA Knockout Mickie James is pregnant. This is coming off the heels of recent reports that former WWE Diva Stacy Keibler is currently pregnant with her newlywed and “tech entrepreneur”, Jared Porbe.

The following is an excerpt from the Examiner report:

“Though Keibler’s reps deny she is pregnant those close to her say the wedding was planned but rushed because of her pregnancy.

Former WWE and TNA Champion Mickie James is also reportedly with child, this coming from sources. James has been accepting more signing gigs of late and telling promoters that are interested in booking her that she is unable to take “bumps” in the ring.

The father of James’ baby is said to be current TNA Heavyweight Champion Magnus even though Magnus took to social media late last year saying that the two were no longer a pair and their split was a mutual agreement.”

As mentioned, Keibler’s reps have denied the pregnancy reports, and the writer also said that attempts to reach Mickie’s management team were unsuccessful as of press time.

Ken Shamrock Discusses Issues With HHH, Talks CM Punk “Spoiled Brat Syndrome”

Source: The Riv and Landin Show

Former WWE and UFC star Ken Shamrock was a guest on The Riv and Landin Show this week, where he discussed several WWE and UFC related topics.
When asked his thoughts on CM Punk potentially entering MMA, Ken said that he thinks CM Punk has no chance if he starts in the UFC, and feels that Punk should start at the bottom because he has no experience. Ken also called CM Punk a spoiled brat for walking out when he didn’t get what he wanted from WWE management, and said Punk is suffering from “spoiled brat syndrome.”

Ken also mentioned that WWE and UFC are both similar in that they refuse to listen to the fans and give them what they want. When asked why Triple H does not want him back in WWE, Ken said HHH dislikes him because he had to put him over several times during the Attitude Era. Ken noted that HHH strongly dislikes putting other people over. Ken expressed a strong interest in returning, and noted that he left in 1999 due to a family incident.

Ken also cited Vince McMahon as being easier to work for than Dana White, and stated that Dana White is incapable of handling fighters in the UFC.

Cesaro Reveals His WrestleMania XXX Plans

0

On this week’s German version of WWE Raw, Cesaro cut a promo announcing his name as one of the 30 entrants into the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. It’s not clear if Cesaro will work double duty against Jack Swagger, if the originally planned match between the Real Americans has been scrapped, or if Cesaro will pull a “Cena” and remove his name from the Battle Royal in favor of the one on one match with Swagger.

WWE News for 3/13/14: Kane Opens New Business, WWE Lists Their “Top 5” Superstars, And More

WWE Superstar Kane and his wife recently launched a new insurance company that is based out of Knoxville, TN. The company is called “The Jacobs Agency” and offers home, auto, motorcycle, boat, RV, rental, life and commercial insurance. In addition to that, they offer retirement planning.

According to those close to Kane, he’s been telling people that he has been planning to retire from WWE for quite some time now and is planning for his post-WWE future. He admits that it’s hard to walk away from the business due to the money and crowd reactions. The reason he’s still with WWE is simply because he feels he can still go and should continue doing so while he can at a “young” age. We know – 46 years old is not young but obviously he’s not getting any younger.

There is also a feeling backstage that Kane will end up involved with politics and may eventually run for political office. It’s well known that he is big into the political world and has appeared on numerous talks shows over the years discussing his views as a Libertarian.

WWE has recently had discussions with AMC Networks Inc., Viacom Inc., Time Warner Inc. and 21st Century Fox regarding negotiations for television rights.

In the case of AMC, that is an interesting one considering that they are now a top five cable network due to the success of such shows as “Breaking Bad” and “Walking Dead.”

The talks with Viacom would be for Spike TV, which explains why Spike has yet to renew their contract with TNA, which is scheduled to expire right around the same time that WWE’s deal with NBC Universal is up.

Time Warner talks would mean a slot on either TBS or TNT, or both. For what it’s worth, one source noted recently that a wrestling company approached them about a potential deal and were told that they had no interest in wrestling, however that wouldn’t rule out WWE, as they are on a different level.

The talks with 21st Century Fox would likely see WWE end up on FOX Sports 1, in an attempt to help grow that new cable channel. This would also mean that WWE and UFC would be focusing all of their cable efforts on the same channel once again, a situation that helped build the UFC in the first place back when both called Spike TV their official cable home.

As previously reported, WWE CFO George Barrios noted that the company expects to announce their new cable television deal at the end of April, or in early May.

WWE WrestleMania 30 will be the final WWE PPV to broadcast on Sky in Germany as the company has signed a new TV deal with the ProSieben/Sat1 Group. WrestleMania 30 will air on Sky Select as the final WWE broadcast on Sky, the end of a twelve year broadcast partnership which brought the country live WWE PPVs as well as live Raw broadcasts and SmackDown broadcasts.

ProSieben/Sat1 has already announced that three weeks after WrestleMania, the event will be available on online VOD provider Maxdome, although the price for that VOD has not been revealed. Going forward, PPVs will air live on Maxdome, with VOD set to be available three weeks after the live airing.

SmackDown will have its final broadcast on Sky on March 31st, and then return to free TV in Germany on April 5th. The series will air on Saturdays at 11 PM on ProSieben Maxx. The three-hour version of RAW, SmackDown replays and WWE NXT will be broadcast on ProSieben FUN, which is paid channel

WWE highlights will also air on MyVideo.de, which is a German website similar to YouTube, on a WWE-branded channel.

UFC star Chael Sonnen was interviewed by TSN’s Off the Record in Canada in an interview that was broadcast last night.

Towards the end of the interview, host Michael Landsberg asked Sonnen about CM Punk and his WWE status, since the two were friends. Sonnen responded that he didn’t know what was going to happen with Punk and whether he would be wrestling at Wrestlemania, but Stephanie McMahon would be aware. Sonnen then held up a piece of paper with a phone number written on it and told those viewing to call the number on the paper.

Sonnen then told McMahon to, “tell Hunter I just played the game.”

The number was blurred out but Landsberg later stated that Off the Record called the number and verified it was actually McMahon’s personal cell number. She wasn’t happy about the call.

According to an internal list that was just made in WWE, the company is projecting the following five guys to be the top Superstars, in order, going forward after WrestleMania XXX in April.

1. John Cena
2. Daniel Bryan
3. Randy Orton
4. Sheamus
5. Roman Reigns

Many found it interesting that both Sheamus came in at number two, and that Batista was not on the list at all. In the case of Sheamus, many point to the fact that Triple H has been very high on him for quite a while.

It should be noted, by the way, that this is a list of the guys they feel will be in those positions several months down the line, as opposed to where they are today. Obviously when they get to that point, things will likely have changed many times, but this is the list that the company just recently made.

————————————–

– WWE is planning on making a big push for merchandise based on four top names – Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, The Ultimate Warrior and Steve Austin.
With this merchandise push, WWE officials want these four at WrestleMania XXX. Obviously Hogan, Taker and Warrior are already booked but word is that they want to find a good storyline for Austin to have a non-wrestling role. The idea of being there has been pitched to Austin but there’s no word on any kind of deal yet.

– WWE Studios will be releasing several of their movies in combo packs this June. There will be a Triple H set (Inside Out, The Chaperone), a John Cena set (Legendary, The Reunion), a Family set (Legendary, Knucklehead, The Chaperone), a Drama set (That’s What I Am, Legendary), a Comedy set (Bending the Rules, Knucklehead, Chaperone) and an Action set (Inside Out, The Reunion, Bending the Rules, No Holds Barred).

– Cesaro was in The Netherlands last week doing promotional work for WWE. He did many TV and radio interviews, including a gym session with the WTF.nl website.

– “Road Dogg” BG James is legitimately suffering from a back injury. There was more talk this past week of doing The New Age Outlaws vs. The Usos for the WWE Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania XXX.
