Booker T Talks His Infamous Hulk Hogan Promo, Returning To The Ring, And More

0

Booker T recently spoke with FatDuckTech.com while in Australia. Here are some highlights:

Your second book is due out later this year. Your first was deeply personal, but this is purely focused on your wrestling career. Was that easier to write?
This book here was totally different to the first book. The first book was really personal, this was just wrestling. Not a whole lot of wrestling stories about certain guys, drunken stupors or anything like that, like most wrestling books, it’s just a chronicle of Booker T’s career. Where he came from, totally the bottom of the totem pole, to close out a company, to be one of the only guys from that company to make it in WWE, and still to be here this many years later, a Hall Of Famer. it’s a quite a telling tale, both for the fans that read it as well as young wrestlers I think they’ll be intrigued.

Everything is chronicled in the book. Thank god for YouTube and Dailymotion. You can go back and find all of that stuff, and everything is there. Some of this stuff, I have to go back and watch it and go “Wow, OK, NOW I remember that.” It’s going to be totally accurate in terms of every little bitty thing that I did in professional wrestling. As well as a lot of cool stuff too.

I have to ask. There’s a notorious promo of yours concerning Hulk Hogan from Spring Stampede…?
Yeah, yeah (laughs). You know — Live TV? We weren’t taught as well as we were in WWE, especially back then.

We had the reigns to just talk and do whatever we wanted to do. I tell you, it’s a promo that’ll live in infamy, but there’s nothing you can do to run away from it, you know. Perhaps my most embarrassing and regretful moment in my wrestling career, but I bounced back from it.

The New Age Outlaws have just had a run with the tag title with a pretty obvious nostalgia kick behind it. Any chance of a Harlem Heat reunion tour?
You know I never say never, but I’m so far past putting my tights and my boots on, going out and being a wrestler. I’m just over that stage of my life.

Some guys it’s just really hard for them to let it go, but for me it’s been really easy to let that stage of my life go, just because I’ve done everything that I’ve wanted to do in pro wrestling. I’ve won all the titles, I’ve been all over the world, I’ve seen it all. There’s just nothing left to prove.

Now I just want to be the greatest promoter I could possibly be, and perhaps follow in the footsteps of Paul Boesch and Vince McMahon and have my own mega-company one day.

– Chris Jericho recently spoke with News Magazine Network to promote his upcoming Wizard World appearance in St. Louis. Jericho was asked which is harder – pro wrestling or music. Jericho responded:

“It’s all hard. And it’s all show business. I’ve never considered myself a wrestler. I consider myself an entertainer. Anything that falls within that show business umbrella I feel I can do. That’s how I set my goals.”

Jericho also talked what his priority is right now:

“My priority now is with my band, Fozzy. I do so much touring with the band that my WWE wrestling appearances for now are far and in between. I still enjoy it. When I feel there’s something interesting to me I’ll get back in wrestling, but for now I’m plenty busy with everything I’m doing.”

– It’s said that Batista is regularly mocked backstage, but obviously not to his face, for the way he dresses. Batista’s jeans ripping on Monday’s RAW from Brooklyn didn’t help his case any.

—————————————

– WWE is inducting the Razor Ramon character instead of Scott Hall himself because they can always induct Hall at a later date with Kevin Nash as The Outsiders or with the nWo as a group. Another reason for Razor’s induction is that Vince McMahon has always been proud of that character.

—————————————

– Bill Apter recently spoke with “Cowboy” Bob Orton on WWE.com about his son Randy Orton and the WWE World Heavyweight Title match at WrestleMania XXX. The WWE Hall of Famer commented on Randy’s future:

It’s worth noting that WWE added Coach’s entrance video to YouTube this morning. Coach also re-tweeted this comment from a fan:

“I’m sure we are all jumping the gun on this but i’d love to see @TheCoachESPN back in @WWE. He was a LEGIT heel back in 2004 it was unreal!”

—————————————

On the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Radio, which you can listen to here (subscription required), Dave Meltzer noted that the goal for next year’s WWE Hall of Fame is for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to be inducted.

Meltzer was asked if Scott Hall was being inducted as Razor Ramon so that he could be inducted next year by his real name with Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash as the nWo. Meltzer doubted it, calling it “overkill,” and noted that he doesn’t think that the nWo would want to play second fiddle to Rock if Rock were to agree to be inducted.

Vince McMahon Comments On His Wealth, Success, And Someone Else Running WWE

0

Forbes has a really good interview up with Vince McMahon. Here are some quotes:

His wealth:
“I don’t consider myself a rich person,” he says in a rare moment of modesty. “I know that I am, but it’s not like I belong to any country clubs. I have a car that goes very fast and a motorcycle that goes extraordinarily fast,” he said of his Bentley and a Boss Hoss 502. “I love speed. Beyond that, I don’t really have anything in common with anyone in Greenwich except zeros. Normally I do not like rich people.”

A McMahon running the company when he’s no longer able to:
“I would like to see a degree of that. I just think as times go on, things will evaporate. Eventually Uncle Sam sees the benefit. You can’t do anything without Uncle Sam taking a huge bite of it.”

Will he ever be satisfied by his success?
“I have a voracious appetite, for life and everything in it. To a certain extent I will die a very frustrated man because I didn’t do this or accomplish that.”

Kofi Kingston Interview – Talks Turning Heel, Wanting WrestleMania Moment, More

0

Donald Wood of Bleacher Report and Ring Rust Radio recently spoke with Kofi Kingston before he was confirmed for the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania XXX. Here are some highlights:

Over the past few years you’ve become known for skin-the-cat moments in the Royal Rumble. If you decide to enter the battle Royal might you have something special planned for the WWE Universe?
“I get inspired from all different kinds of places, cartoons, comic books, movies and things like that and if I see it then I’ll try to emulate it in the ring and often times you figure out why these moves are comic books and movie-style moves because they can’t be done. Most of the time I’ve thought of something I found a way to make it work and luckily it’s actually worked out like the Royal Rumble jump that I did this year there was no contingency plan if I didn’t make that, and it goes the same for the handstand deal and the chair spot, like if I fall then I’m done so knock on wood luckily I’ve been able to actually complete what I’ve set out to do but, again, if I don’t there’s no contingency plan I guess if I fall then I walk to the back and I’ll be eliminated.”

Last year you didn’t get an opportunity to compete at WrestleMania 29, you were part of the pre-show panel. Firstly, how tough was it for you as a competitor to have to sit and watch from the sidelines last year, and also what does it mean to potentially get back in the fray this year?
“Last year, it was the worst. It was the worst thing of all time. Well, not the worst thing because doing the pre-show panel I was able to do something that I hadn’t really done before and on top of that, being there with Dusty Rhodes and Mick Foley was amazing because they’re two legends and I’m sitting there in between them just like ‘oh my god’. It was a cool experience but at the same time as a WWE Superstar your goal is to be on Wrestlemania in some way, shape or form so you can be part of the show and when you’re not, it definitely is a blow to your ego because it’s almost like you set out to be something that you didn’t do. But it’s also eye opening and motivating for the next year because you remember where you were at that point and you try to not end up there again. Hopefully with this Battle Royal situation I’ll be able to get back in there and do what I love to do because as WWE Superstars all you want to do is be on Wrestlemania.”

You’ve obviously had a ton of success in WWE, you’ve won more titles than almost anyone on the roster, but do you feel like you’re still searching for your defining WrestleMania moment?
“Yeah, I think at Wrestlemania you definitely want a singles match and not have to share the spotlight with other guys. Money in the Bank was awesome and some of the cooler moments in my career and it’s awesome to make some memorable moments but I think the ultimate goal is to have that singles match where it’s just you and your opponent, all eyes on you two and you’re just telling a story and you’re out there just tearing the house down. That is the ultimate goal and I’ve had a few different Wrestlemania Money in the Bank moments but not the singles Wrestlemania moment that I strive for.”

Since TLC there’s only been one world title with the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships being unified. Do you feel like that negatively impacts wrestlers such as yourself who are trying to reach that next level?
“Well, I don’t know if it negatively impacts me but it definitely make it harder. Even in terms of just storylines; there’s only so many storylines that the champion can be involved in if you have both titles but at the same time, if you do get to that point it is that much bigger. So I guess it’s bittersweet, it definitely has its upsides and downsides but I think for the time I think it’s a good thing and makes the titles mean that much more because one is not considered more prestigious than the other. If you hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship you are the unified champion; you’re the man”

You haven’t won a world title yet in WWE and there’s obviously still time to accomplish that, but do you feel there’s ever been a time in your career when WWE could have capitalized on your momentum and had you win the title? Maybe after your 2009 feud with Randy Orton?
“I mean, if you think about it, you can become a champion at any given time like one day you could be at one point on the roster and the next day you could be the World Champion. Who knows what the ‘what ifs’ would have been. If I think about all of that then I’d drive myself nuts. There’s a whole bunch of different ways that storylines can go and who’s to say if it goes one way or the other if one thing happened or the other thing happened, it’s impossible to speculate. That’s what WWE is all about. You’re watching this show and you anticipate which way a storyline might go, and when it goes the other way, you’re swerved. Who knows what would have happened, could have happened, should have happened, I don’t focus on all of that I focus on what I want to happen and try to get there.”

As a participant in several high-profile WrestleMania matches, what is your favorite personal highlight and what is your favorite moment as a fan?
“For me, I’d have to say my favorite moment of all, that I’ve had, was my initial Wrestlemania because I’ve always been a fan of WWE ever since I was a kid and I’ve always wanted to be a WWE Superstar and every time I would fantasize about having matches I would fantasize about myself having a Wrestlemania match, so when that actually happened for the first time that was like my dream come true. I don’t know if there was an actual moment in that match but I remember I was laying on the outside I ahd fallen out of the ring off of a ladder or something and I’m just laying there watching the show on the monitor and just like ‘oh my god, this is my dream’ and that was when it was real, it was actual reality.”

“If I had to pick a moment that wasn’t necessarily mine I’d have to pick Wrestlemania 14 when Tyson punched out Michaels. I thought that was awesome because I was always a wrestling fan and Wrestlemania 14 was the first time that I paid for my own ticket, I paid for my way to get there, I hadn’t been to that many WWE live events and it was awesome to be able to do that and to be able to witness all of that and the anticipation leading up to it. That week they had the contract signing with Vince McMahon and Stone Cold and Tyson was there and Vince McMahon got thrown into the Boston Harbor. I was right there for that and it was the coolest thing especially because no one swims in the Boston Harbor; its ridiculously dirty and the fact that Vince was actually in there I think a lot of people, me included, were concerned for his health but seeing him get knocked into there was pretty cool.”

Matches and wrestlers on WWE Network he draws inspiration from:
“For me personally, I’ve been watching a lot of everything, mostly older WWE and WCW type stuff like Rey Mysterio and the cruiserweights. I watched a match with Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc, it’s one of my all-time favorites. From the perspective of what these guys were supposed to do, knowing how things are now, when you’re on the undercard and you’re supposed to go out and have this undercard match, Rey and Eddie were supposed to do that but instead they went out and stole the show in the very first match of the show and from what I read in their books, people were pretty upset about that. Just to watch the match and know what happened backstage ‘politically’ it really is one of my favorite matches and one of my favorite scenarios.”

Turning heel:
“I would love to, first and foremost, I’ve been clamoring at that for a while now but the situation has to be right and the timing has to be right; everything has to be right. I wouldn’t want to just do it for the sake of doing it because you might get lost in the shuffle that way. If the situation was right, it would give me a chance to do something completely different and show people a side of me they have never seen before, which I think would be great and I think would be fun.”

The WWF Prime Time Wrestling Review 2/22/88

0

Prime Time Wrestling 2/22/88

After flopping around on all sorts of different dates, PTW is back on Monday night, at least for this week.

– Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan kick things off from the studio. They talk about the main event of the show being the One Man Gang vs. George Steele. That’s supposed to make people want to stay tuned in?

Match #1: Bad News Brown v. Outback Jack. From the Salisbury, MD 1/27/88 “Wrestling Challenge” Tapings in the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. Gorilla & Bobby on commentary, sounds dubbed in. Bad News has only been on TV a few weeks, and he’s already ten times more over than poor Jack from Humpty Doo, Australia. BNB jumps Jack to get things going. Outback dodges a charge from Brown in the corner, but runs right into a boot from Bad News when Jack tries his own corner charge. Brown works over the shoulder of Jack, uses lots of headbutts, you know, because he’s black so he has a hard head.  Bad News misses a headbutt on the mat, but Jack is unable to gain much success. Brown goes back to the shoulder of Jack, but misses a clothesline and Outback finally has some offense as he lands a clothesline! Elbow drop gets 2 for Jack. Outback’s offense is over as he tosses Brown into the corner but Bad News charges out with a clothesline. Bad News with the Ghetto Blaster and it’s over in 4:27. This was brutal, lots of punching, Jack got almost no offense. A squash, and a boring one at that. To Brown’s credit he played to the crowd, but DUD

– After the match Craig DeGeorge interviews Bad News on the interview platform. Brown is going to take out all the turkeys in the WWF, because he’s from Harlem and all he knows is ‘rats and roaches’. If you don’t like violence you better get some glasses and put some tape on it. WTF? I know Brown wasn’t a great promo guy, but this is hilarious. Bad News says he will pay for the bandages for his opponents when he’s done with them.

– Back in the studio, Gorilla starts going over the WrestleMania IV tournament brackets. The brackets are still in their original form, so Rick Rude is in the top bracket where he could face Hulk or Andre in the semi finals. Monsoon points that out to the Brain, who is speechless.

Match #2: “Dangerous” Danny Davis v. Brady Boone.
From Boston Garden 2/6/88. Craig DeGeorge & Alfred Hayes on commentary. Davis has some choice words for the referee of the match before things get going. Brady goes off on the offense to get things going, some good fast paced stuff that forces Davis to regroup outside the ring. Boone gets a body block for two and goes to a side headlock. Davis counters with a head scissors but Boone with a jack knife pin for 2. Boone tries a dropkick, but Danny holds onto the ropes and Brady misses. David takes over the match. Danny leaves his feet with a jumping clothesline for 2. Davis stays on the offense, Boone screws up a small package for 2. I don’t think there’s a match yet that Boone hasn’t blown at least one spot. Davis stays on top, dropping Boone’s throat across the top rope and hitting an inverted atomic drop. Boone finally comes back after countering a backdrop. Boone comes back with a snap suplex and it looks like he dumps Davis right on his head. Brady nearly screws up a front handspring flip, and then goes for the Vader/Swagger Bomb out of the corner and lands it, but then sells it like he landed on Davis’ knees. The only problem us, Davis didn’t bring his knees up. The announcers cover up, claiming Brady came down on Danny’s elbow, how ridiculous. Anyway, Boone sells the move like he missed it, then he misses a Stinger splash in the corner, which also looked awkward and slow motion as all hell. Davis comes back with a flying butt drop off the top rope to get the win in 7:59. I just don’t know what it is with Boone, he had the tools, but he really screwed up a lot in his WWF run. This match was a prolonged version of a squash, with bad baby face heat. 1/4*

– Special Report with Craig DeGeorge. We take a look at Jack Tunney announcing the WrestleMania IV Title Tournament. This is followed by more studio discussion of how the tournament could play out. Gorilla talks about how it could come down to DiBiase vs. Andre in the finals with Ted buying the win. Of course the brackets would change and this is all pointless unfortunately.

Match #3: The Killer Bees (B. Brian Blair and Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell) v. Steve Lombardi & Barry Horowitz. From the 1/26/88 Hershey Park Arena “Superstars” tapings, in Hershey, PA. Gorilla wastes no time in the studio mentioning Lombardi & Horowitz are from the “Terry Garvin School of Self Defense”. Lord Alfred and Bobby Heenan on commentary. The Bees get things going on Horowitz, some decent stuff from Brunzell. Horowitz hits a well placed elbow to Blair and is able to tag out to Lombardi. Steve doesn’t fair any better. Blair does the stupid bee flapping wing thing as he comes off the second rope. As I watch this match I can’t help but wonder how bland the Bees would have been had they not worn Bumble Bee tights. The heels finally take over on Brunzell with some heelish stuff in their corner. Horowitz & Lombardi are coming off a TV win from last week, so you’d think it would make this match mean more, but it doesn’t. As accomplished as Horowitz was, he does nothing in this match that would make you think so. Lombardi tags in and takes a high knee from Brunzell. Hot tag to Blair. Brian slams Barry onto Steve, then a powerslam on Horowitz. Brunzell comes back in and the Bees throw the heels into each other, Lombardi falls out of the ring. Brunzell atomic drops Horowitz into Blair, who after more goofy bee wing flapping comes off the second rope with a clothesline for the win in 5:45. The Bees stuff was bland at best, the heel stuff was terrible, it’s like they weren’t allowed to do anything that resembled an actual wrestling move. 1/2*

Match #4: The Ultimate Warrior v. “King” Harley Race (w/ Bobby Heenan).  From the 1/26/88 Hershey Park Arena tapings, in Hershey, PA. From Superstars with Vince, Ventura, and Bruno on commentary. Race jumps the Warrior and immediately hits a PILEDRIVER! But the Warrior doesn’t stay down long, he’s back up and Race takes a backwards bump to the floor. Warrior comes off the apron with an elbow to the floor and throws Race back inside. Warrior with more chops and a clothesline on Harley, when HERCULES jumps the Warrior from behind causing the DQ at 1:40. Warrior wraps his chain around the throat of the Warrior, trying to choke him out. Warrior fights his way out, yanking the chain from his throat and swinging it around as Hercules and company take off. Not really a match but I’ll give it a 1/4* for including an angle.

Match #5: Sam Houston v. “Iron” Mike Sharpe. From Boston Garden 2/6/88. Sharpe does his usual stalling while Sam does the two step. Sharpe roughs Sam up and tosses him to the mat. Mike does it again but Houston pops up with a dropkick and a series of moves and Sharpe takes a break on the floor. Lots of stalling, Sharpe wants a test of strength, and takes a minute to lock up. Houston finally breaks the hold, breaking free and cart wheeling around Sharpe, a couple moves by Houston and Sharpe is right back outside the ring, walking towards the dressing room, maybe to wash his hands. For this that don’t know, Iron Mike is a clean freak, obsessive compulsive type stuff. Odd choice of a job to choose wouldn’t you say? Unfortunately for us, he returns to the ring and we’re forced to continue this match. Sharpe takes over with some forearms and elbows, Houston comes back briefly with an atomic drop, but then Sam misses a charge in the corner. Sam counters a slam with a roll up for 2. Sharpe counters a backdrop with his deadly forearm. Houston is knocked to the floor and thrown into the railing. Back in the ring, Houston makes a comeback, but Sharpe reverses a whip off the ropes, Houston counters a hiptoss or something and turns it into a bulldog for the win at 11:37. After the match, DANNY DAVIS attacks Houston with a devastating atomic drop of doom, and Houston sells it like he was destroyed. OK. The match was a typical Mike Sharpe match. Houston made it better due to his bumping. He was good, it’s just a shame he got stuck in the WWF in this period when he was so thin. 1/2*

– It’s our very first WrestleMania IV Report. We’re only 6 weeks out! Two new matches signed besides the tournament. Bobby Heenan & The Islanders vs. The Bulldogs & Koko, featuring the return of Matilda. Bobby & The Islanders respond. Koko’s mother’s name is Tupper… Ware. Bobby knows a good taxidermist for Matilda. Bulldogs & Koko respond. Frankie is flapping like crazy. I wonder what Dynamite did to him. The other match signed for WrestleMania is Beefcake vs. IC Champion Honky Tonk Man. Honky & Jimmy Hart talk, nobody has been able to beat him yet, and nobody will. Honky & Jimmy say the scissors are banned from ringside. Bob Uecker is returning this year as well.

– Back in the studio, Gorilla trashes Heenan for getting in the ring at WrestleMania IV. Bobby says he’s sending the veterinarian Matilda, 2 more bulldogs, and 2 birds after the PPV.

Match #6: The Bolsheviks (Nikolai Volkoff and Boris Zhukov) w/ Slick v. Special Delivery Jones and Brady Boone. From the 1/26/88 Hershey Park Arena tapings, in Hershey, PA. Boone pulling double duty on this show. I’d almost forgotten that Slick managed the Bolsheviks. I honestly didn’t know Slick managed them into 1988. Gorilla & Bobby doing the commentary. Volkoff with a boot to Boone’s mouth to start, and some more strongman offense including a one handed choke with Boone raised in the air. Boone slides over a slam from Volkoff and does some flipping for no reason. a Dropkick to Nikolai and Boris tags in. A dropkick to Boris and SD tags in. And SD tags out. Wow, that was fast. The faces make a few quick tags until Boris hits Jones with a big clothesline and makes the tag to Nikolai. Volkoff with a chinlock on SD. Boris tags in and tosses SD to the floor where Nikolai takes advantage. Volkoff tags back in, but Jones hits a headbutt and gets the tag to Boone. Brady comes in with a flying back elbow for 2. Boone misses a blind tag to Zhukov. Brady runs off the ropes right into a clothesline from Zhukov to the back of the head from the apron. Boone staggers forward into a Russian Hammer from Volkoff, then Boris drops a knee and gets the pin at 6:19. Sad to say, but probably the best match on the show so far. 3/4*

– Mean Gene interviews “The Rock” Don Muraco. God is he vascular. Muraco talks Dino Bravo and WrestleMania IV. Muraco is impressed with Bravo, but Don has worked harder. Muraco talks about all the other potential opponents he could have in the tournament and Gene cuts him off to end the interview.

– And apparently even though this show is taped, we’re just now alerted we won’t be getting One Man Gang vs. George Steele, but rather a repeat of Andre vs. Hogan from The Main Event.

Match #7: WWF Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan v. Andre the Giant (w/ Ted DiBiase & Virgil): From “The Main Event” 2/5/88 in Indianapolis, Indiana’s Market Square Arena. Commentators are Vince McMahon & The Body. This time the match is joined in progress with all the good stuff edited out. Andre slams the Hulkster and kicks the crap out of him while he’s down. Andre hits Hogan with a big boot, but loses his balance and falls as well. Hulk rolls outside, but Virgil rolls him back in to prevent a count out because DIBIASE WANTS THAT TITLE! Andre chokes Hogan with his singlet strap. Andre tries a choke, or nerve hold, or some shit, but Hogan powers out to the fans delight. HULK HOGAN COMES FLYING OFF THE SECOND ROPE WITH A CLOTHESLINE. The giant goes down! Hulk off the ropes for a legdrop, but Virgil grabs his leg! Hulk off the ropes again, this time NAILS THE LEGDROP, but referee “DAVE” Hebner misses the count by dealing with Virgil. Hogan confronts Hebner, but Andre sneaks up behind with some headbutts and a shitty suplex looking thingy. Andre covers! 1….. Hogan gets his shoulder up in plain sight of the referee, but Hebner keeps counting! 2….3!

Oh my God! Andre the Giant has won the WWF Heavyweight Championship! Hebner raises Andre’s hand as Virgil & DiBiase join in the celebration. Hogan is arguing with Hebner as the referee grabs the WWF Title and hands it to the Giant. The Fink finalizes it by proclaiming Andre the “newwww” WWF Champion. Hogan’s four year reign as champion has come to an end! Like a UFC fight, Mean Gene interviews Andre in the ring immediately following the match. The Giant presents Ted DiBiase with the belt. Andre keeps referring to the title as the “WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP”. The Million Dollar Man gets the belt strapped around his waist as Hogan runs the heels out of the ring. While Hogan is busy jaw jacking with the heels, he fails to realize what’s going on in the ring behind him. What is this? TWO DAVE HEBNERS? Finally, Hulk turns to see double vision. Hogan knows something fishy has went down and now he wants some answers. Hogan doesn’t know which ref is the real Dave Hebner. Hogan grabs both Hebners and shakes them up. The Hebners get into another argument about who the real Dave Hebner is, when suddenly the evil Hebner nails the other one and kicks him out of the ring. Hogan realizes the aggressive Hebner is the imposter, and before the imposter can flee, Hulk grabs him and presses him into the air. Hulk flings the evil Hebner out of the ring towards DiBiase & Virgil, but Hebner overshoots them by about a foot and almost clears them before they all take a bump to the floor. (This was Earl Hebner’s WWF debut after leaving the NWA)

I won’t rate this thing again, especially since it was in progress this week. I’m sure it was still better than OMG vs. Animal Steele.

Final Thoughts: This was another one of those shows that wasn’t very good based on ring action. Actually, even the banter with Bobby and Gorilla this week seemed shorter or more bland than usual, though Gorilla did seem to get into the tournament prediction segments. We continue to build to WrestleMania IV while they wrap some random worthless matches around the segments to fill time. The only reason I like this type of Prime Time episode is because you get to see a lot of guys showcased that you don’t always see. Sometimes it’s for the better these guys weren’t given more time to shine on the syndicated shows. I still liked seeing Houston and even the Bolsheviks get some offense. It was even nice to see the Bees in a squash, as bland as it was. That’s the word of the day here for sure, Bland. We got one WrestleMania angle out of it with the Warrior and Hercules, but really nothing else. This is a show you could miss, and it wouldn’t hurt a thing. Somehow, I just love this kind of stuff though. I guess it’s the era.

Match of the Night: The Bolsheviks vs. SD Jones & Brady Boone. It’s sad when the Bolsheviks are bringing in the best match on a show, but Nikolai did better than usual and the faces were there to put on a show. It was nothing more than a glorified squash, so take that for what it’s worth. I liked the finish sequence.[spacer height=”20px”]

THE ECW “OH MY GOD”! VIDEO REVIEW

TV Pilot #3 – 11/28/1992 from the Sports Arena in Kensington, PA

Back in early 1993 ECW was shopping their product around to try and get a TV deal. Four different pilots were created using matches filmed in 1992. This footage is the only known footage from 1992 to exist outside of the WWE vaults.

While the other pilots play out like a comp tape with just matches and no segments this one is produced much like future ECW TV shows. They mention Sports Channel multiple times so I’m thinking they had a deal at this point. We open the show with Jay Sulli and Stevie Wonderful welcoming us to the show and running down the card.

King Kahlua vs. “Ironman” Tommy Cairo ref Joe Dinolli
Kahlua attacks before the bell and has Cairo hurt in the corner. Cairo reverses and corner whip and hits a hip toss and a few arm drags ending with an arm bar. Corner whip by Cairo but Kahlua gets the foot up on the charge. Cairo up but Kahlua comes off the second rope and drives him to the ground. Irish whip and a lunging clothesline gets 2. Back elbow and a second rope forearm. Corner whip but Cairo avoids the charge and gives us ten corner punches. Whip to the opposite corner and backdrop as Kahlua comes out. Cairo hits an atomic Kahlua bounces off the ropes and nails Cairo in the face. Cairo falls to the floor and sunset flips into the ring but Kahlua drops down for a one count Cairo throws his legs up to complete the sunset flip and get the win in 6.40.

Jay Sulli interviews Cairo at ringside after the match. He wants to know if Cairo is ready to challenge for a title and if he would wrestle the winner of the title match tonight. Cairo of course says yes and calls his fans “Iron Maniacs”.

ECW Tag Team Champions The Super Destroyers (w/ Hunter Q. Robbins) vs. Jimmy Jannetty & Larry Winters ref Jim Molineaux
Jannetty rolls out of the way of a lock up a few times. Jannetty goes for a crossbody but is caught by #2 but Winters comes in and drop kicks his back to knocked down #2. A few tags in and out they hit a double hip toss and a few double drop kicks. #2 over powers Jannetty and makes a tag to #1. The Ds double team Jannetty in their corner as Winters tries to break it up but gets sent back to the corner. Jannetty fights back and gets the tag and they hit another double drop kick. Winters now in control but #1 rakes the eyes and hits a side slam D pulls him up from a pin at 2. Tag made to #2 and he gives Winters a few sledge hammers. Winters irish whips #2 and hits a back elbow. Tag made and Jannetty climbs the ropes and comes off with a chop. Irish whip and he misses a standing spin kick by a mile but #2 still gets hurt from it. Drop kick sends him down but he makes the tag to #1 Winters also gets tagged in. Winters with a headlock headscissor combo takes down both Destroyers. Winters hits a super kick on #1 followed by a knee lift. Jannetty back in and he starts working over the leg of #1. Tag to Winters who stays on the leg of #1. Double clothesline Winters covers and the ref counts 2 and we hear a bell and have a time limit draw.

Stevie Wonderful is with TV Champion Glenn Osbourne in the locker room. Wonderful asks Osbourne what is plans are for “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka in his first TV Title defense (in reality Osbourne as been champion since September 30 and has defended the title a few times). Osbourne knows Snuka is a legend but tonight the legend ends and the “Superfly” will be grounded.

Wonderful is now with Hunter Q Robins III and “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. Snuka is shoving an apple in his face and better be careful cause he’s taking very big bites and could choke. Wonderful lets us know that Snuka is the latest addition to Darkside Inc. Robbins says tonight Osbourne pays up for all the pain he’s caused Robbins in the past.

TV Champion Glenn Osbourne vs. “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka (w/ Hunter Q. Robbins III) ref Jim Molineaux
Snuka gets on the mic before the match and tells Osbourne he should just hand over the title. The crowd is strongly behind Osbourne before the match. Osbourne is looking for a ref and Snuka sneaks up behind with a victory roll as referee Joe Dinolli hits the ring and counts the three at 8.40 making Jimmy Snuka the new TV Champion. But wait! Jim Molineaux is back up and he takes the belt away from Snuka and hands it to Osbourne as we hear from the ring announcer that Snuka has been disqualified. Snuka attacks Osbourne and both referees and leaves the ring with the belt.

Kodiak Bear (w/ The Cosmic Commander) vs. ECW Heavyweight Champion Sandman (w/ Peaches) ref Joe Dinolli
Sandman hits the ring with his surfboard and Bear and Commander bail to the floor. Pearl Harbor job to start by the Bear and he has Sandman trapped in the corner. Sandman goes up top and hits a drop kick and retains the title at 7.09.

After the commercial break Stevie Wonderful is in the locker room with Sandman. Sandman says the Bear wasn’t a tough challenge until Rebel came out. Rebel jumps Sandman and the two are pulled apart by a few other wrestlers.

We go back to Jay Sulli and Steve Wonderful to close out our show,

My thoughts on the show…
A decent show I would recommend watching it as it is the first real “TV” episode from ECW. Nothing was very good but I wasn’t begging for any match to hurry up and end. Good enough stuff.

WWE News for 3/25/14: Dish Network, Can Hulk Still Legdrop, WrestleMania Betting Odds, More

0

Credit for the below news goes out to F4WOnline, WON, and other various sources.

– Dish Network has changed their tune and will now be carrying WWE’s WrestleMania XXX pay-per-view on channels 455 and 456 in HD and SD. They still say they will evaluate WWE pay-per-views on an event-to-event basis after WrestleMania.

———————————

As noted, Hulk Hogan appeared on Huffington Post Live yesterday to promote WrestleMania XXX. Here are some highlights:

* He talked about how Triple H saw him at a Toys R Us charity event in New York City a few years ago. Triple H came up to him and asked, “When are you coming home?” Hogan didn’t think Vince McMahon wanted him back but Triple H told him that Vince wanted him home. Hogan noted that TNA public relations worker Mike Weber was standing next to him when Triple H made those comments.

* Hogan once again said “never say never” when it comes to working a match again but said he will never do a leg drop again. He talked about having fun in the ring with John Cena and The Wyatt Family last week.

* Hogan said he and The Ultimate Warrior don’t speak that much but he’s excited to see Warrior be inducted this year.

———————————

– Early betting odds for WrestleMania XXX have Bray Wyatt going over John Cena, The Undertaker going over Brock Lesnar and Daniel Bryan going over Triple H. Odds also have the winner of Bryan vs. Triple H winning the WWE World Heavyweight Title match.

Luxury Living NYC reports that Shane McMahon and his wife Marissa McMahon filed a legal complaint in the New York Supreme Court this past week against their building, Cobblestone Lofts at 28 Laight Street in New York City, the building’s managing agent and several yet-to-be identified design firms and construction groups.

The complaint asks that damages be determined at a trial but say the claim would be no less than $50 million plus interest. Shane filed the complaint because water leaks from various points in his penthouse, which the McMahons claim have caused the growth of “certain toxic, airborne contaminants” inside their living space. The contaminants reportedly gave the McMahons and their three young children severe respiratory ailments.

It has also caused a potential $5 million-plus loss in property value and over $130,000 in damage to furniture, clothing, artwork and appliances. Shane and his family have some personal possessions with them at their current rental home but most of their belongings are in storage facilities at a cost of $5,000 per month. They were forced to evacuate the property and are spending around $15,000 per month on a rental apartment. They won’t be able to return to their home until the problems are fixed. The home was purchased in 2001 for $3.9 million. They began residing there in 2002 but were forced to vacate in May 2012. Shane, his wife and their lawyer were not available for comment.

– Jim Ross noted on Twitter that he may be doing a one-man show during SummerSlam weekend in Los Angeles this year.

– As noted, the next WWE statue from Todd McFarlane’s will be on Randy Savage, paying tribute to his WrestleMania 5 appearance. WWE’s website has photos online at this link. Each figure stands 18 inches tall. It will be released this summer and is limited to 500 pieces with each one individually and sequentially numbered, and signed by McFarlane. Below is a photo of an unpainted statue:

– It’s worth noting that the WWE Tag Team Title match for WrestleMania XXX still hasn’t been confirmed by WWE. It was acknowledged on RAW that Ryback and Curtis Axel earned a shot against The Usos for WrestleMania and it was mentioned that Jack Swagger and Cesaro have earned a title shot but The Real Americans were not confirmed by WrestleMania. We should get some kind of confirmation at tonight’s SmackDown tapings.

———————————

– Many fans at last night’s RAW in Brooklyn were upset that Daniel Bryan did not appear. Besides being advertised for the dark main event, WWE said on last Friday’s SmackDown that Bryan would be on RAW and as late as the RAW Pre-show, he was still being advertised to appear. It’s worth noting that WWE’s website is not advertising Bryan for tonight’s SmackDown tapings from Boston.

———————————

– The original Sin Cara was not happy yesterday when WWE tweeted photos of the Sin Cara character at the Scooby-Doo WrestleMania Mystery premiere in New York City. While the character is in the movie, it was the original Sin Cara’s voice used. Cara wrote “FRAUDE FRAUDE” on Twitter and sent the tweet to Stephanie McMahon, Vince McMahon and Triple H before deleting it.

– Dolph Ziggler spoke with Toucher and Rich of the CBS affiliate in Boston this morning. Here are a few highlights:

Camaraderie in WWE:
“I think a long time ago it was guys only looking out for themselves, getting stabbed in the back and stepped over. Now it’s more of a group family trying to produce an amazing WWE show. That camaraderie is there. But when it comes to me, sometimes I travel with a small handful of people or by myself. And after a crazy show I’ll do an awesome workout in the gym, do a four hour drive somewhere and just wanna crash in silence and not wanna see anybody for a couple hours.”

An average day:
“If I didn’t have media this morning I’d be working out. We were in Brooklyn last night for sold out Monday Night Raw and we were done at 11:30pm. We were on the road by 12 and maybe got here at like 3, 4 o’ clock. I had a 6am wake up to do some media for a couple hours. I’ll maybe catch a one hour nap, probably not. I’ll get into work. We’re always there way ahead of time and have the whole day to prepare, find a gym, workout and we’ll be at the arena all night until Smackdown is over. It’s a very busy day one way or another. The schedule never ends. There’s no offseason. There’s no breaks. It’s great. It’s nonstop and it’s a little exhausting, but we are nonstop doing over 300 live events a year. We’re always reaching out to another country. We’re expanding globally everywhere. The fans keep coming out to support us so we add shows whenever we get a chance. That’s why we’re so busy. The outreach goes out to kids, families, grown ups. We have a great family show that we’re very proud of. It’s a little different than the era a few years ago. You can bring grandma and grandpa, so we’re able to keep constantly adding shows and every year we do a few more.”

———————————

– Sunday’s episode of WWE Total Divas drew 1.28 million viewers for a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This is up from the season premiere.

———————————

– As noted, last night’s RAW from Brooklyn was sold out. The place was so packed there were signs hanging backstage warning people not to ask for comp tickets as there were none available.

———————————

– Bayley, Eden and Tyler Breeze will be doing the meet & greet before Saturday’s WWE NXT live event in Starke, Florida.
