MMA News – Jon Jones vs Chuck Liddell Super-fight?, Cain Velasquez Return, More

0

– The UFC’s pre-event hype show, “Countdown,” aired recently for UFC 172. The program shows the fighters in preparation for their world title fight. Jones is seeking his seventh successful defense of the belt, while Teixeira is looking to win UFC gold for the first time.

– Glover Teixeira is a close friend and frequent training partner of former UFC champion Chuck Liddell. So, when Liddell says he believes Teixeira will defeat Jon Jones at UFC 172, it’s not too surprising for the champion to hear.

But, when “The Iceman” says he believes – in his prime – he would have defeated Jones, well, “Bones” takes exception to those remarks.

“I know he’s supporting his guy,” said Jones, during a recent interview on UFC Tonight. “Liddell has said he’d beat me in the past. But come on Chuck, knock it off. I respect you. If Chuck wants to come out of retirement, I’d welcome him in a super-fight.”

Liddell retired in 2010 after a third straight knockout loss. He was finished by former UFC champions Rashad Evans, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Rich Franklin before calling it a career and entering the UFC Hall of Fame.

– It was reported on “UFC Tonight” that UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was cleared to use his right hand after surgery two weeks ago. Velasquez is expected to face Fabricio Werdum later this year, likely in the fall, from Mexico.

The wrestling coach for Velasquez told the show that he won’t rush his return to make sure he’s back by November and will not fight until he is 100-percent healthy. The last loss Velasquez suffered came to Junior dos Santos when he stepped inside the Octagon with a knee injury that required surgery.

As for talk of coaching The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America vs. Werdum, his coach stated Velasquez has been approached about the idea and filming could take place in Las Vegas this May.

– In other rumored fight news, Urijah Faber is looking to make a return at UFC 175, while Team Alpha Male teammate Chad Mendes is anticipating a title fight with featherweight champion Jose Aldo in August.

Hector Lombard is seeking a possible fight with Nick Diaz or Patrick Cote, though it was reported on “UFC Tonight” that Cote is not interested. Also, Myles Jury would like to face Nate Diaz, but is also targeting Jim Miller.

Paul Heyman Talks ECW’s Demise, TNA Money, Being Screwed By In Demand, More

0

Credit to Raj Giri for this write up on the most recent edition of the Steve Austin Show.

Paul Heyman appeared on The Steve Austin Show for a two part interview. It really is a great episode, and it’s so interesting to listen to two of the most influential names of the modern era talk about the business. In part two of the interview, Heyman discussed keeping up with technology, his past problems with WWE, Vince McMahon being ashamed of sneezing and much more. He also spoke in depth about ECW’s demise.
Heyman made a surprising revelation when talking about the promotion folding, stating that the company’s best year financially was 2000, the last full year that it was in business. Heyman noted that to be successful in entertainment you have to have content, financing and distribution, and what killed them was distribution. ECW lost their distribution on TNN to WWE, which led to TNN rebranding as Spike TV.

Heyman said that he had a deal with the USA Network to replace WWE, however USA Network Chairman Barry Diller decided that he didn’t want any wrestling programming unless it was #1 or it would change the image of the station. Arthur Smith of FOX Sports wanted to do an afternoon strip at 4 in the afternoon with half hour shows from Monday – Thursday, however Heyman said that the economics were not viable for doing that show, and that they would have folded within a few months if they went with that deal.

Heyman then talked about being owed $2.8 million by In Demand for past pay-per-view revenue. Heyman said that the Executive Vice President of In Demand at the time, Dan York, said that he would pay them the $2.8 million that they owed ECW if they could get distribution. York said that if they didn’t get distribution, he wouldn’t pay them because he knew that they would go down, and then they would only have to pay pennies on the dollar in bankruptcy court. Heyman said that if they would have received the money that was owed to them, they could have stayed in business and “re-defined the company.” It would have allowed them to have options, like syndication or taking the FOX Sports deal and finding a way to make it work and eventually get a new timeslot.

Heyman noted that when they filed for bankruptcy, the total debt of the company was $7 million. Of that $7 million, $4 million was his family’s investment, not to mention the $2.8 million that they were owed. Heyman then said that TNA has lost that amount in a month “many, many times.” Heyman said that while he doesn’t know about TNA’s finances today, when he was talking to them about being President of the company years ago, people in the organization told him that they were anywhere from $70 million – $90 million in debt.

Wrestling News 4/24/14: CM Punk Active Online, New News On The Streak Ending, Lots More

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Dave Meltzer noted in the most recent issue of The Wrestling Observer that a major misconception regarding The Undertaker’s Streak ending has been that it was Taker’s call to end it. It is almost surely true that if he didn’t want to have it ended, he could have put up a fight and it most likely would not have happened, so to an extent, that is true.

However, Taker was scheduled to win until some point a few days before the match when Vince McMahon changed his mind, based on Taker’s physical condition and the feeling that there was a good chance this was his last match.

As far as Undertaker’s reaction when Vince suggested it, only he and McMahon know for sure. One friend of Taker’s said he was talked into it while another person very close to the situation said that Taker didn’t argue the decision.
