Jon Jones Picks Ronda Rousey Vs. Mayweather, UFC 172, Fighter Suspended

0

– UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has an interesting take on the much-talked-about Ronda Rousey-Floyd Mayweather contest. Dana White has discussed it, as have Joe Rogan. Now, “Bones” is chiming in on how he feels the bout might go.

“In an MMA match, sorry Floyd, but I have to give this one to Ronda,” said Jones, while appearing on a recent episode of Crowd Goes Wild, which you can watch in the video above. “I have to keep it real. Their weight is fairly similar. Ronda has competed at the highest level, the Olympics. If you are on the ground against someone who’s never trained it, it’s like drowning. I don’t think Floyd would handle it very well.”

Rousey, an unbeaten MMA fighter and the current UFC female bantamweight champion, is a former bronze medalist in Judo from the Summer Olympics. Mayweather is undefeated inside the boxing ring and a current champion.

– UFC fighter Dennis Siver has been suspended for nine months and fined almost $20,000 for a failed post-fight drug test following his 2013 fight with Manny Gamburyan. Siver stood in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission earlier this week to try and plead his case, but the board ruled against him.

Siver was found to have human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in his system. The fighter stated that he was given the drug by a new trainer and did not know it was a banned substance. He also claimed to have only taken drops of the substance and not have it injected.

The 35-year-old Russian moved to the featherweight division in 2012 and has posted a 2-1 record with the one no-contest. Siver has fought for the UFC since 2007.

In the co-main, Phil Davis tries to move one step closer to a future shot at the 205-pound title when he takes on Anthony Johnson, while middleweights Luke Rockhold and Tim Boetsch square off in another main card bout.

Nancy Grace Looking To Make Amends With Wrestling Fans?

0

– As noted, Nancy Grace was scheduled to have a wrestling segment this week with indie star RJ Brewer but postponed it. Producers told Brewer that they would be in touch with him regarding a new date, so the segment is not canceled. Supposedly the show wants to make amends with wrestling fans because of the bad publicity they got.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Express Talk Shawn Michaels Using Their Gimmick, Ric Flair, More

0

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, the legendary Rock n Roll Express, recently sat down together with Steve and the Scum on WGD Weekly for a very candid interview. Ricky and Robert discussed all stops in their great career during their time on WGD Weekly. You can listen to the entire interview above, here are some highlights from the 40+ minute chat:

Their initial thoughts on seeing the Midnight Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty) in the AWA and working with them early in their careers:

Robert: “You know, they were a little chip off of the Midnights [Midnight Express] and a little chip off the Rock n Rolls, they kind of put the names together, but everybody knew that we were the originals.”

Ricky: “Marty and Shawn were good friends of ours. To me when they did it, I took it as a compliment. Shawn Michaels was with us in Louisiana when we were down there, he was just a young kid. Shawn learned a lot from Robert and I, he rode with us a lot. We took our time with him. They were a great tag team. Robert and I had great matches with them, we enjoyed working with them.”

Ric Flair being greatest World Champion of all time:

Ricky: “You have different areas in this business and you have different companies and you meet a lot of world champions. You meet Hulk Hogan, and you meet all these guys, but it’s my opinion that Ric Flair was the best World Heavyweight champion this business has ever had. Ric lived his gimmick, Ric was Ric, when he stepped in that ring and the people paid to see him, buddy, he made sure you got your money’s worth. In the house shows, if wasn’t going an hour time limit, he went fifty nine minutes in the match. He always gave people want they wanted, he still does. Let me tell you, I was with Ric the other night, and he is still Ric Flair. For me it was just a great pleasure to have the great opportunity, just to work with Ric.”

The incredible popularity of the team in their Crockett Promotions days:

Robert: “I knew it was wild, when we went to a place called Carowinds in South Carolina, a big amusement park. We went there and they came up to us and said, ‘guys, we really appreciate you being here, but you have got to leave. The whole park is at the exit, waiting for you to come out.'”

Ricky: “We were rock stars, and we didn’t even know it. The business was different then. Every event we went to, we we broke attendance records. It wasn’t just us, there were a lot of us involved. One of the great eras on this business was to be around at that time. It kept on and on and on, especially going into the small towns. Then, you had an “A” team and a “B” team. Robert and I were the head of the “B” team. But, we sold out everywhere we went. It was a moment in life that passed us by real quick.”

The incredible run of single matches that Ricky had with Flair:

Ricky: “We had a pretty good, long, feud there. If you read his book, me and him went seventeen straight hour long matches, now that was Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday night, then we did two on Sundays. But seventeen of them straight in a row. Then when that was over we did six that were an hour and a half matches, until I met him in Charlotte. He did the gimmick in the cage and Ric broke my nose, he messed my face up. It was a great deal and we drew a lot of people and I had a great time working with him, too.”

Differences between today’s tag team wrestling and over all product and the tag matches and wrestling product of their day:

Ricky: “A lot of people talk about tag team wrestling. They say tag team wrestling is dead. It’s not dead, there is just nobody out there that knows how to do it like the Rock-n Roll Express, and the Midnight Express did. At that time and in that era, every tag team were great workers, they just had different styles. I didn’t have a favorite, because they all were great workers to me.”

Thoughts on why they fell out of favor in WCW:

Ricky: “At that time, there was a turn of hands, when WCW started having people in the office like Herd, who has about as much business being in our business as me flying the space shuttle. So I guess I got a lot of heat with a lot of guys because they brought people in our business that thought they knew everything about the business, but didn’t know nothing.

“It’s still like that today in some places, I’m not knocking, I’m telling the truth. Before the York Foundation, I was caught and lost in the shuffle, because that’s when the money came, that’s when the contracts started, that’s when Time Warner, you know they had deep pockets, but they had people running the business that didn’t know what they were doing. I was lost in the shuffle. Robert got hurt. During that time they put me with the York Foundation. If you remember, when Robert was hurt, he was gone for about a year.

“But you know, the business changes. To tell you the truth, being a baby face for so long, it was hard to work as a heel. Crockett could have kept going, WCW could’ve kept going, not because of us, but just if they had somebody in there that knew what they were doing. You know, Eric Bischoff, he has never been in a ring. He doesn’t know what our business is about. Herd didn’t know what our business is about. I mean you bring a tag team in called the Ding Dongs, from Bellville. Please guys, please, and that was the era that we were talking about.”

– UFC female bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will not be punished for making comments about Cris “Cyborg” Justino, UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com. Rousey referred to Cyborg as an “it,” making reference to her past drug test for an anabolic steroid.

“I think that this is the fight business, and people say mean things about each other,” White said. “Is it not true? Has (Cyborg) not taken (steroids)? She got busted for taking Winstrol, the same drug that Ben Johnson took and many other athletes took to do what? To heat. Ronda called her an (expletive) cheat.”

White added that it is not “worth it for me in the big picture” to bring Cyborg into the UFC at this point. He also said there will be no forced apology from Rousey to her by the promotion. Rousey will defend her title in July against Alexis Davis at UFC 175.

– Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski is returning to the Octagon. Arlovski last fought for the UFC several years ago, winning the title when he submitted Tim Sylvia. UFC president Dana White confirmed the signing on Twitter.

Arlovski (21-10) has won his last two and is 6-1 overall with one no-contest since a loss in Strikeforce to Sergei Kharitonov. He owns 15 career knockout victories and three submission wins. No word yet when he will make his official return inside the Octagon.

Dana White Teeted “Welcome back Andrei Arlovski!”

Jon Jones Might Still Pull Out, Teixeira: Jones Will Regret Fight, More

0

– Glover Teixeira can stun the MMA world and become UFC light heavyweight champion if he can take the belt away from Jon Jones Saturday night at UFC 172. Despite a 20-fight win streak, including the last five inside the Octagon, the 34-year-old Brazilian is a 5-to-1 underdog.

“It’s part of the game,” said Teixeira, in an interview on UFC Tonight earlier this week that you can watch in the video above. “After my fight with (Ryan) Bader, there was talk about me and Jon fighting, and look at what happened to that fight. That was was really close to getting made. I feel really confident that I’m going to take the belt on Saturday night.”

Most felt Jones would sign on for an immediate rematch with Alexander Gustafsson after the two went five rounds last year. “Bones” earned a decision victory, but it was hotly-contested if the final verdict should have went to the challenger. Teixeira plans on making Jones regret accepting him as his next opponent, and has a game plan in action to do it.

“Yes, he will (regret fighting me),” he said. “I’ll keep it aggressive. I’ll keep the pressure on. I’ve got good wrestling. I’m confident in my power. I know if I touch him a couple of times, he’s going to go down.”

– Phil Davis can position himself one step closer to a future title shot if he can deny the returning Anthony Johnson in the co-main event of UFC 172 Saturday night. However, “Mr. Wonderful” remains more keen on talking about Jon Jones, instead of his opponent.

During a recent edition of “UFC Tonight,” Davis stated that – despite the bout being just days away – he still feels like the UFC light heavyweight champion might find an excuse to pull out of his main event bout with Glover Teixeira.

“There’s four days (at the time of the interview) before the fight and there’s a good chance that Jon won’t make it to the fight,” Davis said. “I’m not saying that he’s going to get hurt, but something might happen and he might pull out of this fight.”

Davis isn’t putting the pressure of competing for the title on either himself or the UFC, but he does believe it’s the right time to lead the division.

“It’s now now or never,” he stated. “I have plenty of years left in this game. I’d much prefer now. Give it to me now and let me beat up guys with that title for a long time.”

– While Phil Davis, Daniel Cormier, Dan Henderson and others fight to become the No. 1 contender at light heavyweight, Alexander Gustafsson is locked into that spot. Gustafsson, who defeated Jimi Manuwa earlier this year, will meet the winner of Jon Jones-Glover Teixeira later this year.

With his next opponent – whether it be Jones or Teixeira – in action Saturday at UFC 172, will “The Mauler” be in attendance at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore? According to a report from “UFC Tonight,” no. Instead, Gustafsson will watch the title-fight from his home in Sweden.

Last year, Gustafsson went the distance with Jones, failing in his bid to become UFC champion. He feels it will be a rematch for the title later this year, picking “Bones” to defeat Teixeira thanks to his range, adding that he’s “looking forward to the rematch.”
