We noted before that plans for WWE Payback had been changing at RAW this afternoon. Word now is that WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan is taking a few weeks off due to a neck injury and could be missing Payback. The injury is expected to be announced on RAW tonight.

Bryan will most likely need a minimally-invasive neck “procedure” to fix the injury. If all goes well, he could be back in time for Payback. A source at RAW notes that Bryan has been quiet backstage all day.

Eric Bischoff Talks To Steve Austin About Firing Him From WCW, More

0

– Eric Bischoff appeared on the latest episode of Steve Austin’s podcast, The Steve Austin Show – Unleashed!, which you can listen to below. During the episode the two discussed Bischoff firing Austin from WCW in 1995. Austin had suffered a triceps injury while wrestling on a Japanese tour, and was fired over the phone by Bischoff.

Austin and Bischoff both gave their take on the firing on the show. Austin noted that he was about 3/4 healed when he was fired. Austin acknowledged that they wanted for him to appear at a TV taping and cut a promo, and that he had volunteered to do something prior to that but was told not to worry about it, which “got up his crawl a little bit.”

Bischoff noted that he wanted Austin to stay on with the roster despite his injury, and felt that they could work around the issues. Bischoff wanted Austin on television to keep his character alive and wanted him to cut a promo. Bischoff admitted that WCW was “a bit of a clusterf-ck” back then and there could have been miscommunication, but he told Tony Schiavone to tell Austin to appear at the tapings. Schiavone called Austin, and told Bischoff that Austin’s wife answered, and he could hear Austin in the background saying that he wasn’t there.

“He ain’t coming,” Schiavone said. Bischoff said he felt that “it was kind of bullsh-t,” which caused him to make the decision that he did. Austin didn’t remember the phone call, but admitted that it was probably true and he probably would have made the same decision that Bischoff did in his shoes.

Batista To Star With Top UFC Star In Remake Of 1980s Action Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Batista is set to star with UFC superstar Georges St-Pierre in Kickboxer, a remake of the 1989 action film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and world kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio. Stuntman and martial artist Alain Moussi will play the lead role, while Stephen Fung will direct (Tai Chai Zero, Tai Chi Hero).

“Alain is a star and will be an amazing leading man,” said producer Ted Field of Radar Pictures, who is producing the remake alongside Dimitri Logothetis and Nick Celozzi. “Like Vin [Diesel] in Riddick, Alain will make this movie very special and this Kickboxer will be the start of an amazing franchise.”

The film tells the story of Kurt Sloan, who is the corner-man for his brother, kickboxing champion David Sloan. After David wins the Karate World Championship, he is lured to Hong Kong by a promoter and is killed. Kurt then travels to Thailand to train and avenge his brother’s death.

Vader Talks About Working For Eric Bischoff And Vince McMahon, More

0

Former World Heavyweight Champion Vader recently spoke with Wrestling101. Below are some highlights:

Thoughts on Brock Lesnar, Triple H and The Undertaker:

“Undertaker was just phenomenal and I would say he is the best big man in professional wrestling history, without a doubt.

“I think Brock Lesnar is just a beast, he’s an incredible athlete and he would be great at anything he turned his hand to, I would love to see Brock featured more than he is.

“Triple H is doing a fantastic job running the company now but I would love to see more of him performing in the ring as he is still a tremendous athlete.”

Whether we’ll see him entering the WWE Hall of Fame soon:

“I heard rumblings about it a couple of years ago, but I’ve not heard anything for a while now. I would really like for that to happen, I think I’ve earned it. Yokozuna, Bam Bam Bigelow, King Kong Bundy and myself would be considered super-heavyweights, and I would rank myself very high out of that group, and there is a time in my career in the early nineties where I considered myself to be the best big man.”

Comparing Eric Bischoff and Vince McMahon:

“Eric was put into a situation and I think from a wrestling standpoint he wasn’t really ready for it at that time. He became very educated and excellent at what he did but it was kind of like we had one guy running the wrestling part and then two weeks later we had another guy doing it and so on and so forth until Eric did it. I think Eric was way in over his head initially but he certainly figured it out with the help of Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan and there were times when it became a biased situation but he achieved some great things, he is one of the most successful promoters in the history of professional wrestling.

“What can I say about Vince, he’s a genius, he is the most successful wrestling promoter of all time and just works so hard. He was very approachable and he has done nothing but treat me like a gentleman.”

Backstage News On Why WWE Released Mason Ryan

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Regarding why WWE recently released Mason Ryan, officials felt that he wasn’t improving at a fast enough rate. Ryan was well-liked and didn’t have an ego.

It was noted that it must have taken a lot for WWE to release Ryan because he has the size they like and WWE liked the idea of having a Superstar babyface from Wales.

Brock Lesnar ‘Begs’ Dana White For Favor

0

UFC President Dana White revealed after last night’s UFC Fight Night 40 event in Cincinnati that Brock Lesnar called him to try to convince his friend Pat Barry from fighting again. Barry had suffered seven losses in the UFC, four of which were via knockout or TKO. He was granted his release from the organization to return to kickboxing, and suffered a knockout loss to Zack Mwekassa at the Glory 16 kickboxing show earlier this month.

“Brock Lesnar called me and begged me to make (Pat Barry) retire,” Dana said during last night’s media scrum (props to MMA Weekly for the transcription). “He said, ‘I don’t consider too many people my friend, and I consider Pat Barry a friend. Dana, you got to get this guy to retire.’

“I said, ‘Listen, he’s a grown man Brock. What am I gonna do?’ It’s different with guys like Forrest (Griffin) and Chuck (Liddell), guys that I’ve had relationships with for a long time. Guys who have made a lot of money. That’s the difference. You look at guys like Forrest. Forrest and Chuck are multimillionaires. It’s easy to make them quit. It’s a lot tougher to make a guy quit that has to make a living. I don’t want to hurt Pat Barry or throw a monkey wrench in his life or anything, but at the end of the day, the state athletic commission is gonna need to step in and help a guy like Pat Barry retire… or people that care about him.”

Barry was scheduled to face MMA legend Mirko Cro Cop at Glory 17 in June, however he withdrew from the fight for undisclosed reasons.

ECW TV 1996-06-18 (matches taped at multiple dates and locations)

Champions
World: Raven
TV: Pitbull 2
Tag Team: Eliminators

The show opens with a highlight package of what’s been going on in ECW lately. We see footage of the Taz Paul Varelans feud. Tommy Dreamer and “Primetime” Brian Lee, the troubles that the Dudley family have been having, Pitbull 2 is the new ECW TV Champion, and Rob Van Dam doesn’t respect Sabu.

Joey Styles welcomes us to the show and runs down the Hardcore Heaven card. Sabu takes on Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer versus Brian Lee in a weapons match, Pitbull 2 defends the TV title against Christ Jericho, “The Franchise” Shane Douglas goes up against Mikey Whipwreck, the Samoan Gangsta Party makes their in ring debut, the Gangstas get their last chance at the Eliminators Tag Team Championship and Taz fights Paul Varelans. Brain Pillman has signed with the WWF but has said that he will continue to show up in ECW.

Joey sends us to our first match of the night;

“Primetime” Brian Lee vs. Tommy Dreamer (w/ Beulah & Kimona Wanalaya) ref John Finnegan Falls Count Anywhere (1996-06-08 from Bodyslam Arena in Reading, PA)
Dreamer hits the ring and Lee attacks right away and they go to the floor and into the crowd. Dreamer gets thrown down some bleachers. Dreamer fights back and hits Lee with a crutch. Back to the ringside area and Dreamer uses chairs and cookie trays. Into the crowd again someone hands Dreamer a motorcycle helmet. Dreamer puts it on and headbutts Lee. They fight outside and into the middle of the street as cars try to drive by. Dreamer hits a DDT on the sidewalk. The Bruise Brothers show up and hold a wooden palate in front of his head and give it a big boot. Lee climbs into a loading dock and chokeslams Dreamer through the top of a dumpster and gets the pin at 5.03. About two minutes was edited out of the match.

Stevie Richards (w/ The Blue Meanie) vs. Sandman (w/ Missy Hyatt) ref Paul Richards (1996-06-01 Fight the Power ECW Arena Philadelphia, PA)
Richards and Meanie are dress like the Blue Bloods. Richards serves Missy with for sexual harassment while speaking in an English accent. Raven’s doctor gets in the ring and says that he is the one that did the surgery on the Sandman. He yells at Sandman for still competing and not taking time off because he doesn’t want his professional reputation to be ruined. Missy makes out with the doctor and he faints into Stevie. Sandman nails Stevie with the cane and we get the bell. Steviekick to the Sandman’s knee and a figure four. Sandman gets the cane and hits Stevie with it but the hold is not broken. Stevie gets hit a few more times until Meanie comes in the ring but he gets nailed also. We skip ahead in the match and Sandman canes Stevie again but Stevie comes back with a Steviekick and goes for the figure four again but Sandman rolls him up in a small package for the win. 1.52 of the match is shown. Raven shows up and takes out the Sandman’s knee and puts on the figure four. Raven is covered in blood which confuses me since he wasn’t bleeding during his match with Pitbull 2. Raven canes Sandman while holding onto the figure four. Sandman is left laying in the ring.

Sabu vs. Mikey Whipwreck ref Jim Molinueax (1996-05-18 from Agricultural Hall in Allentown, PA)
This is Sabu’s first match back after being taken out by Rob Van Dam. Sabu takes down Mikey and puts on a leg lock but Mikey turns it into an arm bar. Sabu hits a clothesline and gets a front face lock. Mikey takes a corner whip chest first and Sabu goes to clothesline him but Mikey hits a dropkick. Mikey goes up top but Sabu cuts him off and hits a super hurricanrana. Sabu brings a chair in the ring and goes for air Sabu but Mikey rolls out of the ring. Sabu follows him out and thorws him into the crowd. Sabu jumps off the chair onto the top rope and onto Mikey. Back in the ring Sabu it’s a slam and a springboard moonsault. Camel clutch by Sabu but Mikey is in the ropes. Corner whip Mikey gets to boot up on the charge and goes to the top rope but again Sabu stops him. Sabu goes for a superplex but Mikey pushes him off and hits a swinging DDT. Sabu rolls to the floor and collapses. Mikey follows him out but Sabu whips him to the guardrail and hits air Sabu on the floor. Mikey slams Sabu into the guardrail and throws him into the crowd. Mikey jumps off the top rope onto Sabu in the crowd. Mikey sets up a table on the rail and apron and puts Sabu on it. Mikey goes to the top turnbuckle but for a third time gets stopped. Sabu runs up a chair and jumps to the top rope by Mikey but slips and crotches himself. Mikey hits him with a chair and puts him back on the table. Mikey goes back up the buckle and elbow drops Sabu through the table. Back in the ring Mikey gets a two count. Irish whip reversed by Sabu and it’s a double clothesline. Sabu throws a chair at Mikey. Mikey hits an enziguri and goes up top and hits a splash that gets 2. Mikey goes up again but misses a somersault senton. Sabu throws Mikey onto the top rope and then sits him on the second rope and sits a chair under him. Sabu goes up top and leg drops Mikey sandwiching him between the chair and leg. Mikey kicks out of a pin attempt at 2. Sabu irish whips Mikey and throws him in the air and power bombs him. Sabu goes up top but Mikey stops him this time and arm drags him off the turnbuckle. Sabu throws Mikey in the air again off an irish whip but Mikey hits a frankensteiner this time. Mikey goes up top but Sabu throws a chair and him and drop kicks him off the turnbuckle to the floor as we go to commercial. Back from commercial and Sabu puts Mikey on a table goes back in the ring jumps off a chair onto the rope and DDTs Mikey through the table! Mikey gets back in the ring but Sabu just covers him for the win. 14.44 of the match is shown its announced as being 15.45 so we only missed 1 minute during the commercial. We see a replay of the finish and go back to live action where Sabu and Mikey shake hands.

Hype Central for Hardcore Heaven this Saturday.

Raven sits in the playground of his youth and talks to Stevie Richards about all the girls he brought to him. None of them were dirty enough. So Stevie introduces Raven to Bluedust. It’s the Blue Meanie in nothing but a thong and covered in blue icing. Meanie quotes porno movies and makes fun of Dusty Rhodes.

“Misrilou” promo has D-Von Dudley proclaiming to be the leader of the family, Tommy Dreamer tells Brian Lee he’s taking him to hell, Shane Douglas wants the TV Title back, Gangstas and the Eliminators are each going to kick the others ass, Paul Varelans and Taz are ready for their fight, Stevie hoses down Meanie to get the blue icing off while Meanie does his rendition of the ‘Maniac’ dance, Raven is going to show Sandman pain, Sandman toasts to Dick Murdoch who passed away this week.

My thoughts on the show
Only one full match tonight but it was good one. Lots of good storylines heading into Hardcore Heaven. Not as excited for Hardcore Heaven as I was for the last supershow Matter of Respect but definitely still looking forward to it. The Sabu Mikey match is worth checking out but the rest of the show can be skipped.

UFC Files Huge Lawsuit, Dana Talks Anderson Silva’s Return, More

0

– It sounds as if UFC president Dana White and former champion Anderson Silva have a different opinion when it comes to the return date for “The Spider.” During a recent interview on “UFC Tonight,” White insisted that Silva will be back before the end of the year.

“I’d like to see him come back whenever he wants to come back. I think he’ll be back before ’15,” White said. “He says a lot of things in the media; ‘I’ll never fight Chael Sonnen again,” and then he does. I think we’ll have him before ’15.”

Silva, in several other interviews, has said he doesn’t want to fight again before next year so he can spend more time with his family and on his other projects. After suffering a broken leg in December, Silva received clearance to resume full MMA training by his doctor last week.

“He’s physically ready,” White said. “I’m sure it’s more mental now.”

– The UFC is taking pirating of pay-per-views to the extreme, filing a $32 million lawsuit against a 27-year-old recently. According to a report by the New York Post, the UFC alleges that Steven Messina has been using file-sharing websites to provide MMA and boxing events to fans, accepting payments through PayPal.

Previously, UFC officials have made it known that they will go after anyone who illegally downloads their product. In 2012, UFC president Dana White publicly backed the “Stop Online Piracy Act.” The bill died, but the promotion remained in court battles, filing suits against those that were stealing their shows.

Messina still lives with his parents in Staten Island, according to the report. He refers to himself as the “Provider of Best MMA and Boxing rips online.”

– Anthony Johnson will return to action later this year at UFC on FOX 12 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The event takes place July 26 from San Jose and the SAP Center. The only other bout announced to date features Josh Thomson vs. Michael Johnson.

Johnson (17-4) was successful in his return to the Octagon last month, defeating Phil Davis to move into a contender role at light heavyweight. “Rumble” previously fought at welterweight for the UFC, but was released after a loss to Vitor Belfort in which he missed weight for the third time.

Nogueira (21-5) has won four of his six UFC fights, including a win over former champion Rashad Evans. Nogueira, though, has missed time recovering from injuries. He was scheduled to meet Alexander Gustafsson before being forced to pull out of the planned main event fight.
