AJ Lee’s Return Date, Daniel Bryan Injury News

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

– The Wrestling Observer reports that word is that AJ Lee won’t be returning to WWE until after her wedding to CM Punk. She was originally scheduled to be back before June was over but now it looks like she will be back some time between Money In the Bank and SummerSlam.

– For those that missed the post-surgery report from WWE, the earlier reports of Daniel Bryan having a broken neck were untrue. He had a significant nerve issue that required a minimally invasive surgery, called a cervical foraminotomy, to decompress the nerve root. Bryan has had neck problems for a significant amount of time but they worsened to the point that he had to go in for surgery last week.

The “OH MY GOD!” Review: ECW TV 6/25/96

0

TV 1996-06-25 (matches taped Hardcore Heaven 1996-06-22 at The ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA)

Champions
World: Raven
TV: Chris Jericho
Tag Team: Eliminators

This is going to be a super short recap today as this is all footage that was just recapped as part of my Hardcore Heaven review.

We open with the Baron Von Stevie and Bluedust interview and again I say even if you watched this already just go do it again. It’s amazing. Watching Joey kill the claw hold by swatting it away is a thing of beauty.

Opening Video follows.

Backstage with Joey Styles as lets us know what we will see tonight. Joel Gertner is talking in the background and it keeps distracting Joey. Tonight “The Franchise” Shane Douglas takes on Mikey Whipwreck, IWA Japan has named an international #1 contender and he will take on Raven tonight for the World Title. Joey again distracted and we go to Sandman attacking Gertner in the ring.

Joey shows us highlights of the Shane Douglas and Sabu match from Lulu Temple from the 21st of June.

We see some commercials for upcoming shows. Heat Wave ’96 is the next major card coming up on July 13th already signed is a 4 corner elimination match for the TV Title featuring; Shane Douglas, 2 Cold Scorpio, Pitbull 2 and Champion Chris Jericho.

Back from commercial and we go to Shane Douglas versus Mikey Whipwreck from Hardcore Heaven. Good back and forth with Shane getting the win with the belly to belly.

Back from commercial we get the Stevie Richards promo where Peaches is reintroduced to the wrestling fans. Peaches is better known as the former valet (and wife) of the Sandman. Raven will now have Peaches as his latest tramp. We go to Joey backstage says that Raven has to do a lot better than that to get under Sandman’s skin.

Back from commercial Joey is backstage telling us that it’s now time for Raven to face IWA Japan’s #1 contender.

World Champion Raven beat Terry Gordy to retain the title after all sorts of interference from Brian Lee, Nova, Stevie, Tommy Dreamer. Lots of craziness in this match.

We are shown the full match and all the after match shenanigans. Dreamer DDTs Raven on a chair. Lee chokeslames Dreamer on the chair. This is all actually happening super quick. Raven’s man attack Dreamer and Gordy when Sandman hits the ring and clears the ring. Sandman stalks Raven outside the ring. Peaches shows up dressed in grunge clothing with Tyler Sandman’s son. Raven puts the mic in front of Tyler and he says that he worships Raven. Beulah who is now in the ring gets on the mic and calls Peaches a whore. Raven drags Peaches and Tyler back to the locker room. Sandman follows them crying. Loud “Terry” chant by the crowd. Bluedust comes to the ring. Kimona Wanalaya grabs him by the balls and Beulah hits a DDT.

My thoughts on the show
Awesome show this week. Obviously you can skip it if you watched Hardcore Heaven but if not this is a must see show. Anytime an entire show is taken up by Stevie Richards, Raven and Shane Douglas it’s a must see. Terry Gordy put on an awesome beating and I hope he sticks around a bit here in ECW.

Renan Barao, who UFC president Dana White believes is one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, will return to the Octagon this Saturday at UFC 173 against T.J. Dillashaw for his bantamweight title. You can get an in-depth look at Barao and Dillashaw in the video above courtesy of “Countdown to UFC 173.”

Barao hasn’t lost since his pro debut, scoring victories with the UFC over the likes of Urijah Faber, Eddie Wineland and Michael McDonald. Dillashaw is a product of the Team Alpha Male camp and will be trying to do what Faber, Joseph Benavidez and Chad Mendes could not – win a title in the UFC for the gym.

Other scheduled bouts include Daniel Cormier-Dan Henderson and Jake Ellenberger-Robbie Lawler.

– The World Series of Fighting has been hit hard by the injury bug, as the promotion has now lost a planned welterweight encounter between Jake Shields and Jon Fitch. The former UFC title contenders were expected to meet July 5, but Shields suffered an injury, according to a report by MMAFighting.com.

Fitch (25-6-1) is scheduled to remain on the card, which could air on NBC instead of NBC Sports Network. He improved to 2-3-1 in his last six with a split decision victory over Marcelo Alfaya last October after losing his WSOF debut via submission.

Shields (29-7-1) was cut from the UFC after a decision loss to Hector Lombard. The former Strikeforce champion is 5-3 with one no-contest since 2010. The WSOF 11 card features a bout between Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell for the lightweight title, along with Melvin Guillard vs. Gesias Cavalcante.

– Hector Lombard will not be facing Matt Brown next, as the former Bellator champion is set to meet Dong Hyun Kim at UFC Fight Night from China in August. Lombard was pushing hard to challenge Brown, who has won seven straight.

After a report on “UFC Tonight” stated plans for Lombard-Kim, Lombard took to Instagram and stated that, “You got lucky Matt Brown,” posting a picture of himself with “Stun Gun.” Since coming to the UFC, Lombard has gone 3-2, including a recent victory over Jake Shields to improve to 34-4-1 overall.

Kim, a native of South Korea, earned a spinning back elbow finish of John Hathaway earlier this year when the Octagon was set up in China. He is 19-2-1 and on a four-fight win streak that also includes a knockout of Erick Silva.

Major Concern For Scott Hall’s Condition; Drinking Again?

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

We noted before that Scott Hall was scheduled for an appearance in California this past week with his son Cody but Scott sent a text message to promoter Kirk White and said he was in a dark place, that he refused to get out of bed and wouldn’t be appearing.

There is a lot of concern right now for Hall after the incident. The promoter paid Hall’s $1,600 advance, which was a 50% deposit, and then got the text from Hall on May 16th when Hall and his son were scheduled to fly out of Atlanta to San Francisco. Cody, Diamond Dallas Page and Scott’s agent Bill Behrens all tried to get Scott out of bed so he could fulfill the booking but he simply refused to go. Behrens wrote the following to White, who issued refunds to fans who had pre-ordered autographs and phot-ops with Hall:

“I regret that Scott Hall decided last minute he would not make the trip from Atlanta with his son Cody to Big Time Wrestling’s Wrestlefest and wrestling event. His son, Cody Hall, Dallas page and myself all tried to change his mind but he could not get past the personal issues that had him unwilling to travel to California. Kirk, you are a true professional who goes out of his way to deliver what he promotes and promises. I hope the fans who attend WrestleFest and that evening’s wrestling event do not feel shortchanged by Scott’s decision. I am confident all who attend will have a great time. I believe it is Scott Hall’s loss to have missed this opportunity to meet his many fans and to see his son Cody wrestle for the first time in California. I am sure in time he will come to regret his decision, if he has not already.”

Everything in regards to Hall’s condition is pure speculation but he was reportedly asked months ago about rumors that he’d been drinking and his answer was that he hadn’t had a drink that day. Jake Roberts reportedly mentioned that he was very concerned with Hall on Roddy Piper’s podcast.

Sting Signing With WWE Considered “No Longer Imminent”

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

It’s been reported several times since WrestleMania XXX and even before, by numerous sources, that Sting officially signing with WWE was imminent. Now that it still hasn’t happened, the feeling is that imminent is no longer the word to describe the situation.

You may remember Sting revealing in an interview that he indeed had talks with WWE a few years ago and that he came close to signing. There was a deal in place a few years back where WWE believed Sting was coming in for 100 dates. This may have been the deal Sting revealed in the interview but he ended up not taking WWE’s deal and as we know, went with TNA’s deal instead. Hopefully this isn’t another instance of Sting coming close to signing with WWE but backing off with a deal on the table.

At last word, Sting is still scheduled to work on several WWE Network and DVD projects.
