Lanny “The Genius” Poffo stopped by Under the Mat Radio, below are some of the highlights.
If he could still entertain today’s wrestling fans:
“The writers would probably give me something to read and then ruin my gimmick. I wrote my own poetry and I refuse to read somebody else poems. When you think about the old days, people like Junkyard Dog, Roddy Piper, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Randy Savage, they had personality. You didn’t have to write for these people, they were their personality.”
The legacy of his father, Angelo Poffo:
“My father first made a name for himself back when he was in the Navy in 1945, July 4th he broke the world record for sit-ups. He was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! My father took that publicity and used that for his wrestling career.”
Randy Savage telling them about his wishes to have the whole family inducted into the Hall of Fame:
“It was the final birthday that we celebrated with my father… he lived to be 85 years old. We went to the Olive Garden in Largo, Florida and Randy mentioned the Hall of Fame for the first time that we heard of. Randy said, ‘how do you like that? The Von Erichs in the Hall of Fame, even Chris, all of them. What kind of a Hall of Fame is it that Chris (Von Erich) goes in and he’s not in for his first name, he’s in for his last name. I think the Poffos are better than the Von Erichs and if anybody wants me in, I’m not going in (the Hall of Fame) unless Angelo, Lanny, and Randy Savage go in together.'”
Poffo also dealt with a caller thinking he was using the death of Randy Savage as a way to get more famous, Lanny also talks about his preparation for poems, his character being homosexual and much more in this exclusive 120-minute interview on Under the Mat Radio. Dave Meltzer reported in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer that the original planned main event of Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam is almost certainly not happening. Lesnar is still slated to be in the title picture when he returns, and will likely be facing the winner of the Money In The Bank ladder match for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam.
As for Bryan, he’s still scheduled to be in one of the main events at SummerSlam if he’s ready by then, although it’s not certain that he will be. People in the company expect that he will be back for either SummerSlam in August or Night of the Champions in September. Meltzer noted that WWE is starting to advertise Bryan locally for live events in California in mid-August, although WWE.com has not added Bryan to those events on their website.
Wrestling365 recently interviewed Brodus Clay, which you can check out below. Here are a few highlights:
The Funkasaurus character:
“Initially, I had spent the last 7-8 months to the better part of a year training with the idea that I was going to be ‘the juggernaut,’ destroy all that stuff and those vignettes were a lot of hard work. Then seeing me in the back, cracking jokes and just being myself or whatever, the boss [Vince] said, ‘are you sure this is the right way we want to go,’ and said, ‘so what if we do this instead?’ I was kind of surprised and kind of nervous and didn’t even know if I could pull that off as the dancing stuff really isn’t who I am at all, but cracking jokes with a smile, I do that all day and joke around with the boys all the time. I’m always running my mouth and stuff, talking trash, things like that, but I never really thought of myself as a dancer.
“First thing I done was ask to go see ‘The American Dream’ and figure things out and so I went down to him and I just happened to bump into Naomi and I said to her, I need your help, because I knew her background with Orlando Magic and then we pitched the idea to have the 2 girls and we picked Cameron as a second and we came up with something and played with it. The cool thing about it was that nobody knew about it, everybody was expecting this one thing and with these days of the internet, no one knew. A lot of people were rolling their eyes saying that it’s not going to work, but I was given a challenge and I thought I done pretty well with the challenge put in front of me, it was completely out of the box than what I had originally prepared myself for, but it worked out okay and now that I look back at it, I’m proud of it. I can always be ruthless and aggressive in the ring, but I don’t think I’ll ever have the opportunity to be ‘The Funkasaurus’ again. I’m thankful for that time, because for me, it was a chance to be a character and have fun and honestly, the reactions that I got from the kids just made me want to do more and more of it, because I enjoyed seeing the smiles and the dances and the videos they would send me on Twitter, that was really cool.”
His working relationship with Cameron & Naomi of The Funkadactyls:
“Naomi and I, we trained together at Florida Championship Wrestling, so we were always cool and I’m really good friends with her husband. I went to her, because I always thought that she was so talented and being a Funkadactyl was almost a step back for her, but it was the way to go and she had helped me with the dancing and stuff, she always brings her A-game to work and she’s just really cool to be around.
“Cameron was, I know we had our ups and downs, but she was only new in the business, she had been signed around 3 months, so kind of got thrown into the fire and when you get thrown in the fire, you make mistakes here and there, but overall, they’re both talented and good people and I enjoyed my time with them, they worked hard and I thought that was really apt of them. We all had our ups and downs, some of the things were blown out of proportions for TV ratings for the likes of Total Divas, the whole boyfriend thing, it was more like a joke to me. We never really had a big problem, if we had disagreements, we talked it out.”
Brodus also discussed his WWE release, his opinion of Bray Wyatt’s character and how it’s “changing the game,” his future plans in professional wrestling, how passionate he is about saving dolphins and much more. You can listen to the interview below.

– As noted, TNA is letting fans pick which ring they use beginning with the upcoming New York City tapings – the traditional four-sided ring or the six-sided ring. TNA star Austin Aries tweeted the following today:
“So the people who don’t wrestle are letting people who don’t wrestle decide what I have to wrestle in? Great idea. My body, my vote. #4sides”
“What’s wrong with wrestling? Letting people who’ve never done it, and never put their bodies on the line, run the show. #DoesntWork #4sides”
“Please understand, I DO think the fans voices should be heard, and I’m all for an interactive experience, BUT I’m not sure this is the appropriate place for it, nor do I feel the potential risk outweighs the potential benefit for the wrestlers.”
“For those curious, I find #6sides to be far less forgiving on the body and harder to maneuver around, especially on the top rope. #4sides”
“Guess I accomplished stirring up some debate on #4sides or #6sides. We all have opinions, and I shared mine from a different perspective.”
“Please don’t misinterpret #6sides as unsafe or dangerous. Decision makers at @IMPACTWRESTLING would never put us in that position. #4sides”
Aries also re-tweeted this message from TNA star Ethan Carter III:
“This is why democracy doesn’t work. You people should not have a voice when it comes to my well-being and safety. #Traditional #4sides”

The Hollywood Reporter has a new cover story up on The Rock at this link. Below are a few highlights from their interview:
Finding out about Paul Walker’s passing:
“I was driving with Lauren when she immediately turned very quiet and was looking at me, studying, wondering if I knew. I pulled over and looked at my messages and had a moment where I just caught my breath. We said a prayer right then to give his daughter strength — because we had talked about our daughters. That’s what we would talk about. Both of us were divorced, and we talked about the power of being a dad and the strong connection of a dad and his girl. Then once we got home, we started bawling.”
Finding out about another injury two days after his match with John Cena at WrestleMania 29:
“I came in for a checkup and pulled my pants down, and the doctor goes, ‘Oh! That’s a hernia. Your abdominal wall gets weak and your organs push through. The doctor said, ‘You need to lie down,’ and slowly starts to push my intestines back in my stomach. He said, ‘I would really recommend surgery.'”
Going from wrestling to acting:
“I was told that I had to conform to a standard in Hollywood that would beget me more work, better roles. Which meant I had to stop going to the gym, which meant I couldn’t be as big, which meant you had to distance yourself from wrestling. You essentially had to deconstruct yourself. Then that started to not feel good to me. It reached a point of, ‘I’m not feeling authentic.'”
Regarding a return to the ring for WWE, The Rock says the event and the payday must be equal or bigger than his return in 2013. Rock said he continues to work with WWE but movies are his real focus.
