Rousey Talks CM Punk, Dana White Rips TUF Season, UFC 175 News, More

0

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey talked with Ariel Helwani to promote UFC 175 and had a few things to say about WWE. It’s no secret that Rousey is a WWE fan and that WWE is interested in having her possibly make an appearance at SummerSlam. Here are some highlights:

CM Punk:

“No one can make you have passion for something if you don’t. I felt that way about judo, it was over. I was over it and didn’t want to do it anymore. If he wants to come back and finds that passion again, I would love to see that but if it’s time to move on with his life then he has 100% of my support in that as well.”

Showing off wrestling moves and if she’s planning for a post-UFC WWE career:

“It’s so similar to planning out fight scenes. I was just kind of messing around and thinking about cool moves to do in fight scenes. I really think of WWE like the purest form of stunts, kind of like in movies they say the purest form of acting is theater because it’s live and all in one shot. I feel like WWE is the same for stunt work. I just kind of try to borrow from them a little bit and maybe I can steal some of their stunt work, throw it in a movie. If an opportunity comes up to show up and be a guest host or whatever, that would be pretty cool.”

– UFC president Dana White didn’t take too kindly to the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter. The series, No. 19 overall, will finish up this coming Sunday night at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale with two finals.

White, though, was outspoken throughout the release of the series on FOX Sports 1, and that continued during his recent UFC Download interview.

“There’s a fight on Saturday night with two titles on the line, and then Sunday, I’ve said it publicly and I’ll say it again – the worst season of The Ultimate Fighter – but headlined by BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar,” White said. “These kids better fight their asses off on this Finale because their UFC lives depend on it.”

Eddie Gordon and Dhiego Lima meet in one final, while Matt Van Buren and Corey Anderson collide in the other.

– Urijah Faber takes no issue with being part of Saturday’s UFC 175 prelims on FOX Sports 1. In fact, Faber asked for the spot instead of one on pay-per-view.

“People have to pay for pay-per-view, but the prelims on FOX Sports 1 are free and go out to more fans,” said Faber, during a recent interview on UFC Tonight. “All the people in bars can watch for free. I asked my management to get that spot.”

Faber, a former WEC champion and contender to the UFC bantamweight title, will be facing Ultimate Fighter alum Alex Caceres in the prelim main event. “The California Kid” is unbeaten in non-title fights throughout his career.

“It’s weird being on an undercard,” he admitted. “I’ve never been on one before, but it’s a small price to pay to let all my fans see me for free.”

– Weigh-ins for Saturday’s UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida card took place earlier today. Wrestling Inc. will have complete coverage of the action, while final weigh-in results can be found below.

Second, more detailed account of the Smackdown Tapings below.

Thanks to reader “Hassan” for sending in these results from tonight’s SmackDown taping in Newark, NJ:

In the opening segment, Seth Rollins comes out only to be interrupted by Dean Ambrose. After a brief dialogue exchange, Ambrose rushes the ring only to have Randy Orton come from the back to double team him. Reigns comes out to even the odds and clear the ring. Triple comes out to announce Dean Ambrose vs. Randy Orton as the main event of the night. If Reigns interferes, he’s out of the fatal 4 way at Battleground.

After accepting the challenge on Main Event, Alberto Del Rio vs. Sheamus is the next match.

* Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio (U.S. title match). Very good match, Sheamus wins with a Brogue Kick.

Bo Dallas comes out to cut a promo, stating he will win the battle royal at Battleground for the vacant I.C. belt.

Bo Dallas vs. Diego was a quick match with Bo winning with the Bo-Dog.

Y2J is out next to cut a promo. He talks about the Wyatts and Bray interrupts to cut a promo on the Titantron. Y2J challenges him to come out, only to have The Miz come out. Miz cuts a promo until he sets foot in the ring and geta the code breaker.

Big E comes out to face Cesaro, but once he entered the ring during highlights from Raw, Cesaro attacked Big E. Big E got the better of him before officials stopped him as the match never even got started.

Eva Marie vs. AJ is next. Paige comes out to sit ringside. After a few minutes, Eva Marie taps to the Black Widow. Paige comes in to congratulate AJ and walks away.

Damien Sandow (as Bruce Springsteen) is out next only to get interrupted and attacked by Rusev. Lana cuts a promo to a lot of heat. Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter interrupt and cut a promo in the ring. Definitely one of the biggest pops of the night. They have a stare down before Lana and Rusev leave and head to the back

Dean Ambrose vs. Randy Orton is next. Seth Rollins comes out first to join the commentary team. During the match, Ambrose attacks Rollins, then as the match continues he throws Orton out and goes for a dive outside, only to be hit with the briefcase by Rollins leading to the DQ. Roman Reigns comes in to make the save and clears house. Orton slips out before he gets speared to end the show.

There was no dark match. After the show ended, Rollins and Orton get the better of Reigns. They throw Ambrose back in and then Reigns spears Orton, and Ambrose took out Rollins before he also gets speared to send the crowd home happy.

The “OH MY GOD!” Review: ECW TV 8/6 & 8/13/96 (ECW In Japan!)

0

TV 1996/08/06 (matches taped from “The Doctor is In” 1996-08-03 at ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA)

Champions
World: Raven
TV: Shane Douglas
Tag Team: Gangstas

The 8/6 review covers the unique angles and interviews from the fallout of The Doctor Is In Arena show. Match details for this specific show can be found in their entirety in my “The Doctor Is In” OMG Review found here.

The 8/13 TV episode features action from Japan will all new review material.

JT Smith comes out to the ring to open the show and tells us there is a great band in the arena tonight. Smith calls KISS to the ring. Out come Stevie Richards, Blue Meanie, Super Nova and Don E. Allen in KISS face paint. They come out to “I Wanna Rock and Roll”. They strut, dance, sing, and pretend to play their instruments until the Sandman comes out and canes everyone. Raven comes out with Lori and Tyler Fullington. Stevie with a steviekick from behind and Raven hits him with the cane right in the eye.

We go to Joey Styles as he runs down tonight’s card, which features action from The Doctor is In. You can catch my full review of that show here.

We go to our opening match of Axl Rotten taking on D-Von Dudley. Buh Buh Ray attacks D-Von before the match even gets underway. Axl and D-Von form an alliance and leave together.

Joey again hypes the action that’s coming including the 4 way dance tag team title match. Raven says that he won’t be defending the title tonight because of Sandman’s injuries.

We head to the Raven interview which leads into Stevie Richards defending the title for Raven against Sandman. Raven ends up coming into the match at the very end and pins Sandman to retain the title.

Tonight’s main event is the four way dance. The Gangstas come out on top to win the ECW Tag Team Championships. The other participants in the match were the Samoan Gangsta Party, Bruise Brothers and of course the former champions Eliminators. After the match the Eliminators argue and push each other as the Gangstas celebrate in the ring.

My thoughts on the show,
As I was not a fan of the whole Doctor is In show I was also not a fan of this episode of TV. I have been into the Dudley family saga but I’m ready for the payoff to happen and adding Axl into the whole thing doesn’t do anything for me. The Sandman Raven stuff was ok. I hate New Jack so the Gangstas getting the straps doesn’t make me happy. Thumbs down.

TV 1996/08/13 (matches taped 1996-08-11 at Korakuen Hall in Bunkyo, Tokyo)

Champions

World: Raven
TV: Shane Douglas

Tag Team: Gangstas

ECW is in Japan for their first international tour. Joey Styles is backstage at Korakuen Hall. Hmmmm, It looks a lot like the backstage area of the “ECW Arena” just with a promo poster for tonight’s show hanging from the ECW banner. We see brief clips of Buh Buh Ray Dudley against Tarzan Goto and some stills from Japanese magazines with pictures of Tommy Dreamer and Raven which is tonight’s main event.

Raven is outside and he says that it’s just them in Japan tonight no backup for Raven. Raven says he has always done it alone and doesn’t need backup. Even if Dreamer does beat Raven his life is a living hell anyway so it won’t matter.

Back to Joey and he hypes up the strides that ECW has made over the last three years and how big they have become. Tommy Dreamer and Terry Gordy are in the locker room. Gordy thanks Dreamer for calling in Dr. Death. The Eliminators come in and say that they are still the best tag team in ECW. They respect Gordy so they won’t start anything now but when they get to the states it’s on! A brief promo by the Eliminators airs where Saturn blames Kronus for them losing the titles.

The Eliminators vs. Takashi Okano & Kasuke Yamada
I’m fairly certain Saturn is going to kill these guys, he looks very angry coming to the ring. Saturn stats with Okano. Some nice back and forth mat wrestling to start and Saturn tags out. Kronus comes in and lands the handspring elbow in the corner. He misses a leg drop though and Yamada gets tagged in. Belly to back by Kronus and then he dumps Yamada across the top rope. Kronus and Saturn hit a backbreaker top rope knee drop combo. Northern lights by Saturn for 2. He tags in Kronus and they hit a double team spin kick. Clothesline by Kronus. Yamada able to make the tag. Kronus also tags. The match clips but I think its my disc and not the actual episode. Saturn has a cross face on Yamada. Okano tagged back in and Saturn tags Kronus and they land a double big boot. Slam by Kronus and a somersault legdrop lands. Kronus grabs the arms and belly to bellys Okano. Tag to Saturn Kronus hits a superplex and Saturn comes off the top with a splash for 2. Yamada gets tagged in and they hit double drop kicks on both Eliminators. Kronus and Okano back in the ring. Kronus gets slammed and Yamada comes back in. Spin kick lands and Yamada comes off the top with a cross body. Saturn breaks it up and gets dumped to the floor. Double STF on Kronus. Saturn back in to break that up. Saturn and Okano in now and Saturn gets DDTed. Okano comes off the top with a drop kick for 2. He goes up again for a double axe handle but Saturn drop kicks him on the way down and hits a falcons arrow and top rope head butt but its broken up by Yamada. Kronus dumps him and they hit Total Elimination for the win.

World Champion Raven vs. Tommy Dreamer (w/ Beulah)
Paul E. Dangerously is at ringside representing ECW. Bell rings and our main event is underway. Tommy pushes Raven into a corner. Clean break but Dreamer spits on Raven. They lock up again and tumble out of the ring. Raven slams his face into a table and throws him back in the ring. Fist drop gets 2. Raven misses a dropkick and Tommy drops a knee in-between the legs. Raven on the floor and Dreamer leans a chair on the bottom rope and baseball slides it into Ravens face. On the floor Raven is busted open with a chair to the face and they fight into the crowd. DDT on floor by Raven. Raven with a chair and to Tommy’s head and he’s bleeding now. In the ring Raven puts a chair on Tommy’s face and leg drops him. Raven opens a chair and DDTs Dreamer on it. Back to the floor they go. Raven puts Dreamer on a table and jumps on him but the table doesn’t break. Dreamer throws Raven into the post and then suplexes the table onto him. Back into the crowd they go. Dreamer throws Raven down the stairs. Stevie Richards shows up dressed as a fan and Stevie-kicks Dreamer. Back in the ring Raven covers but only gets 2. Stevie into the ring and hits another one but Dreamer again kicks out. Raven holds Dreamer but Dreamer sorta moves and Raven gets hit. Stevie with a powerbomb and puts Raven on top but again only a 2. Stevie goes up top but Dreamer shakes him off and drop kicks him. Raven tries to dropkick Dreamer but he moves and Richards gets hit instead. DDT and Dreamer gets 2. Dreamer puts Stevie in the corner and beats on him. Dreamer bulldogs him onto a chair and he’s busted open. Raven with a school boy from behind for 2. Dreamer with a DDT but doesn’t cover. Frog splash by Dreamer. Patricia comes in and Dreamer piledrivers her. Raven from behind with two nasty chair shots for the win at 11.20.

My thoughts on the show,
I thought this show kicked ass. Thumbs way up. The tag match was good kind of expected a little more violence from Satur though. I really liked the main event. Dreamer almost got the 3 count on the DDT and you thought they were maybe doing something special for the big international show but Raven again steals one away. See this episode for sure.

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

– Hulk Hogan’s current deal with WWE has a substantial guarantee plus a high-dollar figure per dates. Hogan also has the ability to do his own bookings outside of WWE but WWE always has the right to book him first on any date.

– As noted, former TNA Knockout Rosita (Thea Trinidad) has been used on WWE TV several times lately as one of Adam Rose’s Rosebuds. Given how prominently show was shown at Money In the Bank and RAW, it’s likely WWE will be signing her soon.

– Matt Hardy, Ric Savage of American Diggers, actor Nick Searcy and indie wrestler Mickey Gotti are launching a new wrestling-based TV project. Filming takes place on July 9th and July 10th in McDonald, Tennessee at the ARW Arena. They are looking for wrestlers who do not have a contract as part of a casting call. Hardy wrote on Facebook that the project has potential to get some of the indie wrestlers involved huge publicity.

– WWE’s website announced today that Renee Young has officially joined the WWE Superstars commentary team, beginning with today’s new episode. She will be working the show with Tom Phillips. This makes Renee WWE’s first full time announcer in more than a decade. Renee commented to WWE.com:

“I feel there is definitely a certain amount of pressure, not only as a performer and broadcaster but representing women who may not even know this is something that they want to do. I can show other women that if you’re not a Diva and you still want to be involved in WWE, there’s so much you can do. It’s definitely really cool to be in the position to create a bit of a niche for myself and other women.”

Triple H also commented on the promotion:

“It has nothing to do with her being a female or not, it has to do with her being the right person for the job. She’s got a great voice that cuts through the clutter. She is very knowledgeable about WWE, about its history, about the talent and she is really willing to step up and do her homework.”

– We noted before that The Monday Night War series could end up airing on Thursday nights on the WWE Network once the first season of Total Divas is over. Regarding actual episodes of RAW and WCW Nitro from that era being added, they are expected to be put up in a few months, roughly around the time the first six-month subscription cycle ends.

– WWE taped the following matches for tonight’s NXT on the WWE Network:
* Big Cass vs. Sylvester Lefort
* Becky Lynch and Bayley vs. Sasha Banks and Charlotte
* CJ Parker vs. an unknown wrestler
* Sami Zayn vs. Justin Gabriel
