Rob Van Dam will be finishing up with WWE at Tuesday’s SmackDown taping at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA. We are looking for correspondents for the show, so if you are attending it, please contact us by clicking here.

It’s not clear if RVD will be working the Smackdown show itself, but he is already booked to meet Seth Rollins as part of The Main Event.

This was RVD’s second run since returning to the company last year. His latest run started the night after WrestleMania 30, when he returned to defeat Damien Sandow.

The WWE Raw Report 8/25/14

[spacer height=”20px”]

Raw Pre-Show 8/25/14 from WWE Studios

– It’s Saxton, Booker, and Riley as per the norm. Raw will kick off with a “Hall of Fame Forum”. Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, and Hulk Hogan will discuss the SummerSlam match between Cena and Brock. What’s to discuss? Also on Raw, Cena vs. Wyatt tonight.

– And now it’s back to last Monday and the Paul Heyman & Lesnar promo. Just the closing moments are shown, but we’re reminded Cena gets his rematch with Brock at Night of Champion. The panel talk about how Cena’s match tonight is a must win situation after being slaughtered by Lesnar.

– And once again back to last week. Rollins vs. Ambrose. Awesome match, Rollins stomps Ambrose’s face through some “cinder blocks”. Dean goes off to make a movie, but the people in WWE can’t find him. Yay.

The movie finishes up before Night of Champions so Ambrose shouldn’t be gone long. Tonight on Raw, Seth Rollins has a eulogy planned for Dean Ambrose. Sounds lame.

– I guess this Bella thing is still supposed to be a big deal. We see Nikki slap Brie from last week’s Raw. BAM, bitch went down! Oh God, the Bellas are going to attempt a family reconciliation tonight. This Raw is sounding less and less attractive.

– We learn the Usos defend the tag titles against Gold and Stardust tonight. I hope it’s a million times better than last week. Renee Young interviews the Usos. It’s all good, because they Uso crazy. Dawg…

– Some WWE Shop shilling follows, and then a reminder about the “Hall of Fame Forum” that will kick off Raw.

[spacer height=”20px”]

WWE Raw 8/25/14 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California

– Jerry Lawler kicks off Raw, because Michael Cole is in the ring for the Hall of Fame Forum. We get Hulk Hogan, Flair, and HBK out to the ring. They rush the entrances, cutting Flair and Hulk’s before they even get to the ring. Bet that’s a first for them… These legends are out here to discuss Cena vs. Lesnar. HBK thinks there’s no way Cena will beat Lesnar and Flair agrees. Shawn thinks that Cena should retire and hang it up. Hogan disagrees, he thinks Cena can still go. Hogan says he’s rooting for Cena, Flair says he likes Cena, but Shawn plays total heel and says Cena doesn’t stand the chance.

Hogan reminds Michaels that Cena has beaten Lesnar too, and that at NoC it will be the rubber match. Shawn keeps playing heel and shitting on Cena, which leads to John Cena coming out… “Cena sucks” chants follow.

Cena puts over the three legends, then talks about his take on SummerSlam. John admits he got his ass beat, but says Shawn is right, he is a changed man from the fight. Cena says he’s bringing the fight to Brock, he’s not going to NoC to just beat Lesnar, he’s going there to beat his ass.

And with all those budget cuts, these guys get flown in and paid for this 10 minute segment. Wooooo, Brother, Suck it.

– Up next it’s Jack Swagger vs. Rusev….

-Commercial Break-

1. Jack Swagger vs. Rusev (w/Lana)

Ya know, there’s a guy in the Crazy Max Fantasy Football League with the Team Name “LANA = ANAL”… That’s all I’m sayin. 🙂

Swagger passed out to the Accolade at SummerSlam, but I have a bad feeling this thing is finishing up tonight. “USA” chants start the match as Rusev jumps Swags. It doesn’t take long for Jack to take over and go for the Ankle Lock. Rusev escapes by rolling to the floor. “We the People”. Rusev tries again, but again rolls to the floor, but Swags follows and knocks Rusev around. Back in the ring, Jack on the attack and clotheslines Rusev into the corner. Swags ends up getting dropped across the top rope and then tackled out of the ring as we take a commercial break with JBL exclaiming “YOU BETTER WIN JACK!”…

Back from break, Rusev with a bearhug but Swags escapes, but Rusev with a back spin kick to the face… Rusev stalls and Swagger finds time to land a Belly to Belly suplex, and a big boot on a comeback. Swagger Bomb, but Rusev gets his feet up, but Jack fakes it and lands on his feet, ANKLE LOCK APPLIED!!!! Rusev ready to tap…. The crowd is behind Swagger solidly… But Rusev gets the ropes and rolls outside yet again… Swags follows out but gets driven into the apron and reinjured his ribs from SummerSlam. RUSEV… CRUSH… But Jack’s playing possum! ANKLE LOCK!!!! But Rusev spins out… Swagger with a jackknife pin…1….2….Rusev kicks out!

Rusev fires back with a nasty kick tot he ribs of Jack and beats him down in the corner. Swagger keeps trying to fight back for America, but Rusev continues the assault. “We the People” chant actually starts… If they end this thing here, Vince can blame himself for dropping the ball this time… Lana laughs as Swagger lays on the mat after taking a lengthy beating. Rusev hits a front round kick to the ribs of Swagger and stomps him some more until the referee stops the match at 12:30. Rusev will win via referee stoppage from a lengthy pummeling to his ribs.

I guess this thing continues as Jack hasn’t jobbed out yet. Not sure what the Mark Henry thing was about last week then… No Henry this time.

The Russian Flag flies overhead as Rusev and Lana celebrate…

– Cesaro vs. RVD next to decide the #1 contender for the US Title. Well this is a giveaway…

-Commercial Break-

– Backstage, Jack Swagger is with the trainers. Bo Dallas interrupts and tells him to Bo-Lieve. Swagger tries to go after Dallas as he leaves, but his injury prevents him.

2. Rob Van Dam vs. Cesaro.

Winner is the #1 contender for Sheamus’ US Title. Feuding with Sheamus? I’d rather be the loser in this match. Speaking of Sheamus, he’s on commentary… Fella. Crowd seems dead except for spots. Outside of a side kick and Rolling Thunder, Cesaro controls the first several minutes of the match and taunts Sheamus in between. RVD fights back with a split legged moonsault and a springboard side kick…. RVD sets up for the Frog Splash, but Cesaro rolls outside. RVD reaches out but gets dropped across the top rope, and the Neutralizer follows, and this thing is over to show you just how relevant any of these guys are right now. Cesaro wins in 3:30.

After the match, Cesaro snatches the US Title from Sheamus and tosses it back at him, pissing Sheamus off in the process.

– Next week the WWE Network will finally do some real updating… The first 100 hours of WCW Nitro, plus several WWF “Attitude Era” Raws… Is that 100 hours without commercials? I dunno… Either way, there will finally be some damn WCW TV… Now if they’d throw some damn Territory and Pre-Raw WWF TV up they’d have a better assortment of things to watch…

– Paige is in action next.

-Commercial Break-

3. WWE Divas Champion Paige vs. Natalya.

Natalya tries another roll up, but it doesn’t work. Paige forearms Nattie’s face off. A long abdominal stretch spot by Paige shows us just how pale she really is compared to Natalya. Nattie reverses the abdominal stretch into her own version, but it doesn’t last long. Natalya hits a suplex on Paige and locks in the Sharpshooter! But Paige makes the ropes and gets the brak. Paige tries to apply her own Sharpshooter but Natalya breaks out. Paige still manages to win it with the Paige Turner in 2:50…

– AJ Lee on her way out. AJ skips to ringside and distracts Paige, and Natalya lays her out with a spinning clothesline… AJ checks on Paige afterwards. AJ calls Paige her little “English Muffin” and says she’s sincere in their friendship. AJ then hugs Paige, and kisses her hand… Then skips away… Paige is confused…. “CM Punk” chants throughout the segment…

– Next is the Eulogy of Dean Ambrose.

-Commercial Break-

– A big picture of Ambrose is in the ring for the Eulogy. We have Kane and Seth Rollins out in black suits. Rollins at a podium to talk about the life of Dean Ambrose. Seth talks about why he selected Dean for the Shield. We go back to last week to see Seth stomp Dean’s face through the cinder blocks. Back from the video, Rollins is laughing. Rollins says Dean’s legacy will now be summed up by two words, “What if?”. Because we’ll never know. Dean should have walked away when he had the opportunity. Rollins doesn’t think we’ll see Ambrose again. Rollins says he created the Shield, and he destroyed it.

This leads to Roman Reigns making his way down. Kane meets Reigns at ringside, but Roman lays him out like a bitch… Rollins and Reigns go at it, Roman kicks his ass and smashes him in the face with the podium… lol… Reigns sets up for the spear, but Kane pulls Rollins out of the ring just in time.

I expected this segment to be much more tacky than it was. Rollins promo was good, just the right amount of time, it didn’t carry on or feature in corny nonsense. The Reigns stuff was a nice touch… Perfectly fine segment.

– Stardust and Goldust promo. They get a shot at the titles tonight, and pretend like they’ve never held them before… It’s next.

-Commercial Break-

4. Tag Champs The Usos vs. Goldust & Stardust.

The Usos start off on top with Stardust in their corner. Another match with a less than stellar crowd. Stardust takes over and tosses Jey Uso to the floor. Jimmy tries to check on his brother, but Goldust hits him with a rolling senton off the apron, then Stardust dives out onto Jey. Crowd still sucks and we’re not even half way through the show. Raw returns….

Back from break, Goldust works the arm of Jimmy Uso. Goldy and Jimmy collide when they both try body blocks. Hot tags to Stardust and Jey. Stardust takes the ass bomb in the corner, and Goldy takes a Samoan Drop. Jey with a dive over the top onto Stardust on the floor, but it appears Jey has hurt his leg. Stardust beats the count, and Jey doesn’t. Count Out in 8:00 and the Dust brothers win. Usos retain and the Dusts are pissed off.

Goldust gets on the mic going heel, saying the Usos got counted out on purpose. Goldust demands a rematch right now, but Jimmy Uso laughs at the thought. The Dust Brothers go heel and turn on the Usos, beating the crap out of Jimmy and continuing to hurt the leg of Jey. The Usos are left laying… This Dust gimmick as a heel thing? IMO it’ll be even less over…

– Up next, Brock Lesnar speaks… Recorded last week 😉

-Commercial Break-

– Seth Rollins and Kane are backstage plotting against Roman Reigns. Kane makes a match between Reigns vs. Rollins & Kane for tonight in a handicap match. They plan to end Reigns tonight like they ended Ambrose.

– Brock Lesnar interview. Taped last week at Raw, but not presented as so. Lesnar talks SummerSlam, and how Cena’s “No Give Up Bullshit” didn’t do him any favors. Heyman asks Cena how dare he invoke the rematch. Brock had pity on Cena at Slam which is why he pinned him when he did instead of inflicting more punishment. Lesnar says Night of Champions will be Cena’s last night on this universe.

– Dolph Ziggler on his way out… Ziggz gets to do the spinny belt thing around his waist again after all this time. It’s Ziggz vs. Miz… again…

-Commercial Break-

– It’s RVD vs. Rollins on Main Event tomorrow… Why bother?

5. IC Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz.

The Miz isn’t dressed to wrestle because this match isn’t for the title. He says he’s been to Disneyland today because it’s a Hollywood perk. The Miz introduces his “stunt double” to replace him in his match tonight. It’s Damien Mizdow. You can see how important this thing is to the Miz now. Miz on commentary, Dolph with a dropkick and a near fall to start. Sandow takes over from there. Ziggler comes back with some of his signature stuff, but Sandow drops him and applies the Miz’s Figure Four. Dolph escapes and his the Zigzag for the win in 2:20. No crowd reaction, can’t really blame them in this instance, but they’re still a pretty crappy crowd…

– The Bella stuff is next. Blah

-Commercial Break-

– Jerry Lawler in the ring, because this Bella thing is just tearing him up inside. He needs to see them reconcile. Out comes the Bellas, separately I may note… Nikki tells Brie to get her own entrance music… LOL.. That sounds like something she’d really say. Brie pleads with Nikki to fix this and make things right. Nikki says the fans are fooled, they think Brie isn’t materialistic and is a nice woman, but it’s the opposite, it’s always about Brie. Nikki calls Brie an act… Nikki says Brie was even holding her back in the womb.

Nikki says she’s sick of being twins for the fat and ugly men who have perverted twin fantasies. Nikki verbally rapes Brie down like she owns her. I dunno, these girls can’t act, I think she’s being legit… lol. Nikki just completely trashes her… She’s sick of the scraggly hair, eco friendly, log cabin having, troll marrying Brie. It’s actually pretty cool, lol… Nikki forces Brie into tears, Lawler tries to stop her, but Nikki lays into the King and he leaves the ring.

Nikki grabs Brie by her face, says she has no sister, and wishes that Brie had died in the womb… Damn… Nikki then dumps Brie over out of her chair and beats the crap out of her. Lawler pulls Nikki off but she slaps the shit out of him off screen. Nikki attacks Brie again before she’s pulled off and taken away. Brie sits in the ring crying.

Another segment I wrote off that wasn’t all that bad. WWE made it through not one, but two bad sounding segments on a surprisingly good note. It was all Nikki here, fun promo… And for the record I don’t like the Bellas or the storyline, but the segment itself was good… So take that FWIW.

-Commercial Break-

6. Roman Reigns vs. Kane & Seth Rollins.

It’s handicap match rules, 2 on 1. I get Kane losing the mask with his movie coming out, but I don’t understand the logic behind it. Uh oh, I used the “L” word again. Logic in rasslin is not the most used thing in the world. Reigns all over Kane and Rollins whacks him with the briefcase to end this thing in like 3:00, and I’m not complaining.

Kane and Rollins expose a stack of cinderblocks again this week and plan to Curb Stomp Reigns through them. Reigns knocks Kane away, and attacks both men. Superman Punch to Rollins, and Kane gets posted and thrown over the barricade. Reigns grabs a Cinder Block and throws it at Seth’s face. Rollins ducks and the block hits the ring post and explodes. Rollins runs off while Reigns lays Kane out with a Superman Punch. No cinder block to Kane? Whyyyyyy?

– They shill the Network more… Night of Champions, 6 months of PPV’s, 100 hours of Nitro and Attitude Era Raws on the way. They call the Attitude Era Raws the best of them all… Ummm, They must have forgotten that they’re on Raw right now…

– Bray Wyatt promo. What kind of man would Wyatt be if he continued to let John Cena suffer since SummerSlam. Bray says he’s a man of mercy. Wyatt says he will put John down, if you think things are nicer on the other side, you’re wrong.

-Commercial Break-

7. Los Matadores (w/Torito) vs. Heath Slater & Titus O’Neil.

Insert promo from Slater Gator, their gimmick is Titus doesn’t even want to be in this position. Quick doublt team work on Slater to start. Titus distracts from the apron and Heath gets in a side kick to take over for the heels. Backbreakers by Titus and he barks, then Heath barks and Titus gets mad and slaps his chest to tag out. Slater gets in a big clothesline, but Titus tags himself back in. O’Neil slams the Matador on the top rope and chops the shit out of him… Heath tags back in, but the Matador counters a clothesline from Slater into a crucifix for the win in 4:15, and the crowd goes mild.

I’d still rather have a match like this than one of those “comedy” segments…

– We relive the Hall of Fame Forum for like the FOURTH TIME tonight. I get it. More hype for Cena vs. Wyatt, but we’ve got one more segment ahead of them.

-Commercial Break-

– Big Show and Mark Henry vs. Rowan & Harper on Smackdown.

8. Bo Dallas vs. Kofi Kingston.

It’s babyface Kofi, without the recent stable buddies. What an odd thing to even start and drop. Bo’s push in recent weeks has been a little confusing, but we’ll see… Kofi starts off on fire, but runs into a hard knee from Bo, and Dallas takes control… Kingston comes back with a springboard dropkick and some signature offense. Kingston goes for a double jump moonsault, but Dallas shoves him off the top and Kingston takes a nasty bump… A sloppy Bo-Dog gets the win in 2:00. Where’d your buddies go, Kofi?

– Bo tells Kofi that he isn’t like Swagger. Kofi only let himself down. Swagger let down the entire country. Bo-Lieve! Swagger hits the ring and lays Dallas out with the spinebuster slam thing that he does.

-Commercial Break-

– After several weeks away from the format, we’re back to the traditional 9 match card this week.

– Jericho’s Highlight Reel returns next week with Randy Orton… What happened with this Wyatt angle???

9. John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt (w/Rowan & Harper).

Cena’s first TV match since Slam here. Wyatts get a black out entrance to save time. Cena is pissed and lays Bray out early. Don’t tell me they’re going to sacrifice Wyatt to get Cena’s new attitude over… Cena hits Bray with a German Suplex as a message to Brock… Cena with a Saito Suplex. John beats Wyatt down in the corner and hits a running knee to his face. Another German suplex by Cena, and a stiff ass clothesline… Poor Bray, and his character, buried at the expense of John Cena.

Bray finally breaks another German with elbows and the fans finally pop. Wyatt hits an avalanche in the corner, but Cena comes back and tackles him to the mat. John on top, and Rowan & Harper interfere and attack Cena. The Wyatts are DQ’d in 5:00.

It’s a 3 on 1 beat down, which leads to Big Show and Mark Henry making the save. I assume we’ll have a six-man after the break, so that another babyface can do the selling…

-Commercial Break-

10. John Cena, Big Show & Mark Henry vs. Bray Wyatt, Erick Rowan & Luke Harper).

Match is in progress with Show in charge of Rowan. Henry tags in but now the Wyatt Family get control. Bray is pissed off from the last match, so he takes it out on big Mark. All three Wyatts take turns getting heat on Mark. Harper charges Henry in the corner but runs into a boot, and Show gets the hot tag… For a second… Harper lays Show out with a giant dropkick. Now the Wyatts works over Show. Wyatt with a senton on Show for 2… Harper with a superkick on Show for 2… Wyatt slaps Big Show around, and Show hits a CHOKESLAM on Bray out of nowhere, and both men are down… Hot tags to Cena and Harper… German Suplex on Harper and Cena is going to kill someone. Cena with some ground and pound and right into the STF for the tap out in 7:00… Just that quick…

Rowan comes in and gets an AA… Wyatt comes in and takes an AA…. Harper is picked up and takes an AA….

Thumbs slightly up here this week. Nothing was “amazing”, but there was enough decent stuff here that the show didn’t drain me. The only segment that tanked for me was the Hall of Fame panel thing, but it was short and wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t good. Star power and big names don’t guarantee a good segment, and I know this. There were a lot of throw away matches or short matches to further angles, but the interview segments were above any expectations that I had. The Cena stuff was interesting, but it makes me wonder what’s next for the Wyatts… But hey, no HHH, no Stephanie, and I’ll take that.

[spacer height=”20px”]

Raw “Backstage Pass” Post Show

– The panel talks John Cena, and his new attitude, utilizing the German suplex to send a message to Lesnar.

– Then, as if we haven’t seen it enough, we go back to the Hall of Fame Forum. Well, they made sure to get their money’s worth out of this segment. The Cena vs. Lesnar talk continues.

– Moving on to the Reigns vs. Rollins/Kane match. The panel talks Dean Ambrose’s injury, and then Reigns and the cinder blocks. The panel talks the Shield, who the leader was, and how Reigns hasn’t let it go just yet.

– With a couple minutes to go, they touch on the Bella feud, “I wish you had died in the womb”… and that’ll do it for tonight…

This is likely my last “Backstage Pass” unless something interesting is supposed to develop during a future show. The kids are back to school, and honestly I’d rather spend this time winding down and actually enjoying what I’m watching. There’s really nothing to report on these shows other than guys sitting around in this new studio format and recapping things I’ve already written above.

[spacer height=”20px”]

Quick note to my weekly readers. Next Monday night, 9/1/14 (Labor Day), I will not be covering Raw live as I will be taking part in the annual CrazyMax Fantasy Football Draft beginning at 8pm. We still plan to provide both Raw Results and Superstars spoilers that evening on the CrazyMax site, however the odds of me laying out a full Raw Report are unlikely at this time. If the show seems “Review worthy”, I can write up a post review next Tuesday. Regardless of that fact, we will provide you with full Raw Results next Monday night.

$5,000.00 Intergender Battle Royal
The participants for the match are Sherri Martel, Tigra, Angel, Don E. Allen and Jay Sulli. This looks to be a disaster. Sulli comes out looking wasted and dressed like a hillbilly. The bell rings and everyone just stands there. Robbins and Allen push Sulli into Sherri and Angel and they toss him out. Angel tosses Allen. Tigra is just sitting up on the turnbuckle watching the action. Sherri rips off Robbins pants and her and Angel toss him out. Sherri and Angel shake hands but Sherri double crosses her. Each team starts outside the ring and there is a countdown from 10, they then charge the ring and try to get the bat. Crash gets it but the Headhunter ducks. They all go to the floor where one of the Hunters gets the bat and uses it on Crash. Crash sends on of the Headhunters through the wall. Perez is busted open. At about the 3 minute mark Crash, Perez and one Headhunter get in the ring. All are busted open. The other Headhunter comes back from out of the wall and Crash meets him at ringside to brawl some more. Everyone is bleeding. All four men outside the ring now using chairs and the bat. This is easily the most violent ECW match to date. Perez dugs a bat shot and hits a spin kick. Springboard moonsault hardly connects. Perez and a Headhunter climb the ladder for the scaffold. Perez crotches the Headhunter on a rung. In the ring Crash gets powerbombed. The Headhunter misses a top rope elbow. Crash with a big slam and he misses a moonsault. Clothesline takes down Crash. Moonsault by the Headhunter gets the win in 9.02. After the match the fight goes on as all four men brawl to the eagle’s nest. The Headhunters bail back to the locker room to end the show.

My thoughts on the show…
The Public Enemy and Ian Rotten make their debuts here. The scaffold match and main event are worth checking out but the rest is a pass. I’m in the middle on this one as it is an important show (see below) but really only had two matches worth seeing. This would also be the last time the PA State Championship would be defended for the 0 people that were interested in that title.

This was the first Paul Heyman booked ECW show. Over the next few weeks we will thankfully be seeing a lot of roster changes. Eddie Gilbert had stepped down as booker on September 7th after learning that ECW joined the NWA. Gilbert had previous poor dealings with Jim Crockett during the UWF/NWA merger. Edited off this tape is Gilbert’s promo from after the tag team match that he was involved in during which he retired. Both he and the Dark Patriot (Doug Gilbert) are gone after tonight. Without Gilbert around in the early days of ECW it may not have lasted. Paul gets a lot of credit for being the guy that brought “hardcore” to wrestling when really it started in Memphis. Gilbert was able to take a lot of the elements he saw while in Memphis and bring them to the Philly crowd. Sadly “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert would pass away a year and six months later.

Match Thoughts:  Ishii actually separated his shoulder during the match, but still hit the brainbuster anyway which is crazy.  Smith was really good here as well, he used his strength which is all I ask for but showed he is more than just a power wrestler as he hit moves like the tiger suplex.  They kept the action up throughout and didn’t waste any time outside of the ring.  A fun match and a good way to open up the show.  Score:  6.5

Match Thoughts:   This is my favorite Yano match of the tournament so far.  Tenzan not only foiled Yano’s cheating, but cheated himself, which only seemed fair.  The bit where Tenzan releases the hold because Yano tapped, not knowing the referee was knocked out, was great as well.  As far as ‘comedy’ matches go this one was really good as they went straight to the point.  Really good stuff here.  Score:  7.5

Shelton Benjamin vs. Yuji Nagata
Nagata kicks Benjamin as soon as the match starts, Benjamin quickly applies an ankle hold but Nagata kicks him off.  Dropkick to the knee by Nagata but Benjamin pushes him off and both men return to their feet.  They lock knuckles, elbow by Benjamin but Nagata elbows him back.  Punches by Nagata but Benjamin catches him with a side slam.  Nagata rolls out of the ring, but Benjamin goes out after him.  Irish whip by Benjamin into the guardrail and he kicks Nagata in the jaw.  Benjamin goes for a vertical suplex but Nagata blocks it, knee to the stomach by Benjamin and he slides Nagata back into the ring.  Mounted punches by Benjamin and he chokes Nagata against the bottom rope.  Kick by Benjamin but Nagata gets back up, elbow by Nagata and they trade shots.  Nagata goes for a backdrop suplex but Benjamin reverses it into a DDT for a two count.  Benjamin applies a side headlock but Nagata inches to the ropes to force a break.  Benjamin picks up Nagata, knees by Benjamin and Benjamin hits a double underhook slam.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Benjamin picks up Nagata but Nagata elbows him and the two trade strikes.  Irish whip by Benjamin, reversed, and Nagata hits an overhead suplex.  Kicks to the chest by Nagata into the corner, Irish whip, and Nagata hits a big boot followed by an exploder.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Nagata grabs Benjamin, elbows by Benjamin but Nagata knees Benjamin, Irish whip, reversed, and Nagata hits an enzigieri.  Nagata picks up Benjamin and goes for the backdrop suplex, but Benjamin blocks it and applies the ankle hold.  Nagata almost taps but he makes it to the bottom rope to force a break.  Nagata kicks Benjamin off but Benjamin delivers a superkick.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Benjamin picks up Nagata and hits a German suplex hold, but that gets a two as well.  Benjamin charges Nagata but Nagata hits an overhead kick.  Nagata and Benjamin trade elbows, and Benjamin hits the swinging kick.  Benjamin goes for the Paydirt but Nagata avoids it and applies the seated armbar.  Benjamin gets out of it and re-applies the ankle hold, but Nagata rolls out of it and applies the Nagata Lock IV, Benjamin tries to roll out of it but Nagata keeps it locked on and Benjamin finally taps out.  Your winner:  Yuji Nagata

Match Thoughts:  Aside from the usual issues I have with Benjamin matches (his offense isn’t very focused, since he uses an ankle hold but doesn’t do any other work on the ankle), this was a fine match.  Nagata seemed to win a bit too easy since Benjamin was controlling the match, but the Nagata Lock IV is a solid finisher so it didn’t seem too much of a stretch that Benjamin would tap out to it.  This didn’t blow me away or anything and they were coasting at times, but it was solid.  Score:  6.0

Doc Gallows vs. Satoshi Kojima
Tie-up, and Gallows shoves Kojima down to the mat.  Tie-up, side headlock by Gallows, Kojima Irish whips out of it and Gallows shoulderblocks out of it.  Kick by Kojima and he applies a side headlock, Kojima goes off the ropes but Gallows doesn’t go down.  Scoop slam by Gallows, he goes off the ropes but Kojima rolls out of the way of the body press.  Koji Cutter by Kojima and he lariats Gallows out of the ring.  Gallows gets up on the apron but Kojima elbows him back out to the floor.  Kojima goes to the ropes and goes for a pescado, but Gallows moves out of the way while punching him in the process.  Gallows stomps on Kojima and throws him into the guardrail.  Gallows slides Kojima back into the ring and goes in as well, and Gallows hits an elbow drop.  A second elbow drop by Gallows and he hits a third.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Gallows elbows Kojima in the chest and applies a reverse chinlock.  Kojima gets a foot on the bottom rope and Gallows hits a leg drop.  Cover, but Kojima kicks out.  Gallows boots Kojima in the back of the head, Irish whip by Gallows and Gallows hits Kojima in the stomach.  More punches by Gallows, Irish whip, but Kojima moves when Gallows charges in.  Chops by Kojima in the corner, Irish whip, and Kojima hits a jumping elbow in the corner.  Snapmare by Kojima, he goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving elbow drop.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Back up, Gallows and Kojima trade chops up on their feet.  Scissors kick by Gallows, he picks up Kojima and he hits a scoop slam in front of the corner.  Gallows goes up to the second turnbuckle but Kojima gets his feet up when Gallows goes for the reverse splash.  Kojima goes for a suplex but Gallows blocks it.  Gallows goes for a suplex but Kojima lands on his feet, and Kojima hits a DDT.  Kojima picks up Gallows and delivers a brainbuster, cover, but Gallows barely gets a two count.  Kojima takes off the elbow pad and goes off the ropes, but Gallows kicks his arm.  Gallows Pole by Gallows, cover, but it only gets a two count.  Gallows throws Kojima into the corner and Gallows hits an elbow.  Gallows goes off the ropes but Kojima blocks the lariat, and Kojima lariats Gallows in the back of the head.  Kojima goes off the ropes and levels Gallows with a lariat, cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Satoshi Kojima

Match Thoughts:   This was fine, I guess.  Too short to be offensive but not a whole lot happened here.  Some time wasting but nothing epic, although Gallows only had one near fall and it seemed most of the match like it was Kojima’s to lose.  Which makes sense, since he is Kojima.  Nothing really wrong with it but you’ll forget it about ten seconds after watching it.  Score:  5.0

They circle each other to start, tie-up, Goto pushes Naito into the ropes, Naito switches positions with him and Naito slaps Goto in the chest.  Goto chops him back and they trade chops back and forth.  Kick by Goto, he goes off the ropes and Naito delivers a dropkick.  Chop to the chest by Naito and he elbows Goto, Irish whip, reversed, and Goto hits an armdrag.  Goto hits a hard lariat that sends Naito out of the ring down to the floor.  Goto goes outside of the ring, he picks up Naito and Goto elbows Naito in the back of the head.  Another elbow by Goto, he picks up Naito and Irish whips him into the guardrail.  Big boot by Goto and he elbows Naito into the stands.  Goto throws Naito into the crowd before returning to the ring, with Naito slowly following.  Goto stomps on Naito, he picks him up, side headlock takedown by Naito but Goto reverses it into a headscissors.  Naito gets a foot in the ropes to break it up, Goto picks up Naito and hits a vertical suplex.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Goto applies a reverse chinlock and elbows Naito in the head.  Back up, elbows by Naito but Goto knocks Naito into the corner.  Stomps by Goto, he picks up Naito, Irish whip, and Goto hits a heel kick to Naito.  Backdrop suplex by Goto, cover, but it gets a two count.  Goto picks up Naito, Goto puts Naito on his shoulders but Naito slides off, kick by Goto and he goes for a lariat but Naito ducks it and hits a swinging neckbreaker.  Naito picks up Goto, Irish whip, and Naito hits a hiptoss followed by a dropkick.  Senton by Naito, he goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a missile dropkick.  Naito charges Goto but Goto boots him back.  Elbows by Naito, kick by Goto and he puts Naito on his shoulders but Naito slides off.  Naito goes off the ropes, Goto gets Naito on his shoulders and this time he hits the Ushikoroshi.  Back up they trade elbows, Naito picks up Goto and hits a kick in the corner followed by a slingshot dropkick.  Naito picks up Goto, he puts Goto up on the top turnbuckle and joins him, hitting a Frankensteiner.  Naito picks up Goto and hits a German suplex hold, but it gets a two count. Naito picks up Goto and hits a side slam, he goes up to the top turnbuckle but Goto rolls out of the way of the Stardust Press.  Both wrestlers slowly get up and Naito rolls up Goto for a two count.  Enzigieri by Naito, Irish whip by Naito, reversed, Goto gets Naito around the waist but Naito elbows out of it.  Headbutt by Goto, he picks up Naito and he hits a modified Ura Shouten.  Cover by Goto, but Naito gets a shoulder up.  Goto picks up Naito and nails the Shouten Kai, cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Hirooki Goto

Match Thoughts:  This match was missing something.  I admit this tournament isn’t doing my any favors for my opinion of Naito, watching so many singles matches of his in a row is exposing his flaws.  Goto also had his issues, like he was hell bent on hitting the Ushikoroshi and when he finally hit it…. it meant nothing, both men were up on their feet at the same time.  It felt more like connecting the spots than a war, which is different than most the matches that New Japan has been putting on lately.  It wasn’t unwatchable, it just wasn’t engaging and was lacking in too many areas.  Score:  4.0

AJ Styles vs. Lance Archer

Match Thoughts:   Styles switching back to ‘underdog babyface’ was interesting, there are so many factions in New Japan that act like heels that the lines get blurred a lot.  I am glad Styles had worked over the leg the entire match, while the Calf Killer came out of nowhere at least there was a basis for it so it didn’t come across as unrealistic.  Archer managing to find a new way to set up the Blackout was impressive, so there is that, but he is still crazy boring on offense.  So a mixed bag but certainly not horrible which is high praise for an Archer match in this tournament.  Score:  5.5

Minoru Suzuki vs. Togi Makabe

Match Thoughts:  Ok that miscommunication at the end was by far the worst of the tournament, you don’t really appreciate how good these guys are the bulk of the time until they mess up that bad.  Anyway even besides that, the match was subpar.  The match was all over the place, random submission holds with some just being long and not being productive (such as Makabe’s long leg submission hold that went nowhere).  I almost think they didn’t have time to plan, they went outside the ring a few times, Suzuki casually went out to the apron for his apron armbar spot, it just seemed poorly constructed.  No good.  Score:  3.0

Match Thoughts:  A somewhat simple match but it was fine.  Honma has fallen a bit into the trap of doing the same spots in every match, and the first half was more of the same but the second half saw him do some different things to try to pick up the upset.  A good match but nothing more than that here. Shibata is the man but time was a bit limited so it wasn’t the epic brawl that he has had in other matches during the tournament.  Score:  6.0

Match Thoughts:   I’ll give Takahashi some credit here, he seemed more focused than he has been in other matches and did all he could to pick up the big win.  They limited the strike exchanges which is a nice change of pace and everything flowed together really well.  No awkward moments or anything, just a good solid match from start to finish.  It lacked a ‘moment’ or anything special, but beyond that it was a lot of fun.  Score:  7.0

Match Thoughts:  A good match, but I have to question the ending.  Yes anything can happen in the G1 Climax and odd endings are normal, but this was the main event in front of 7,000 people.  Tanahashi had done a good job weakening the leg, twice he went for the High Fly Flow unsuccessfully so there was a story there, but he won with a pin most commonly used by Osamu Nishimura.  It was just anti-climactic.  Up to that point the match was a good back and forth match, had a few different things like the Reverse Sling Blade that I don’t remember seeing (at least not recently).  But the ending of the match can leave a lasting impression and after 17 minutes of work in front of a very large crowd, I didn’t enjoy it and it was a bit deflating.  Score:  6.0

Final Thoughts:

Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Yujiro Takahashi. This is probably evidence that there was really no stand out match on this card, as I am not a big fan of Takahashi.  But he was a lot more focused here than he has been in past matches, and Okada is of course the man and was doing his usual thing.  There were a ton of near falls and the crowd was really into it.  Really solid match.

MVP:  Tomohiro Ishii. Ishii is a beast.  Not only did he keep his hopes alive in the tournament, but the dude separates his shoulder during a match and just keeps on trucking.  I’ve seen wrestlers dislocate shoulders and keep wrestling, but Ishii didn’t even stop doing any of his normal moves.  The man was in obvious pain but he never quit.

Overall: For an event that I thought would be a ‘big card’ due to where the event was being held, I was disappointed.  Nakamura/Tanahashi was probably the worst of their matches I have seen in recent memory, I know Tanahashi is hurting but it just wasn’t up to their usual standard.  A lot of the other matches were solid but none went above that, and a few of the pairings today just did not seem very comfortable with each other at all.  When the top two rated matches had Yano and Takahashi in them, you know something is amiss.  It is still not a bad show, it just wasn’t up to the standard set the night before.

Bad Crew vs. Buh Buh Ray Dudley & “The Shah’ Hack Meyers (w/ Sign Guy Dudley), ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
Buh Buh and Hack charge the ring and attack. Once things settle Bad Crew hits a heart attack clothesline on Buh Buh but Hack comes in to break up the pin. Buh Buh with a bossman slam as Hack punches away in the corner. Buh Buh with a top rope splash. Buh Buh and Hack each get a pin at 2.35 but I don’t know with what because the wonderful camera crew at RF Video did not have their camera in focus.

Johnny Smith vs. Super Nova (w/ Stevie Richards & Blue Meanie)
HAHAHAH so before the match starts we have what appears to be a fan explaining to the camera man how to use the zoom and how to focus the camera. We get the bell but Stevie jump in the ring and gets on the mic. Stevie tells Johnny to tell that bitch Queen of England she owes Meanie $35 and they will break her arm if she doesn’t pay up. Smith chases Stevie out of the ring and then goes after the arm of Nova. Back breaker for 2. Boston carb and a gutwrench suplex are met with “boring” chants. Smith picks up Nova for a suplex but hangs him up on the top rope instead. Smith hits the ropes and gets tripped up by Richards and Nova attacks from behind. Nova on offense for a few minutes doing nothing of note. Smith comes back with a DDT and missile drop kick followed by a clothesline for 2. A nice looking powerslam only gets 2 but Smith follows that up with a tigerbomb for the win in 7.28

Submission or Knock Out Match: Little Guido (w/ JT Smith & Sal Bellomo) vs. Taz (w/ Bill Alfonso), ref John Finnegan
Alfonso on the mic before the match rants about how no one can beat Taz. Smith gets the mic after and our camera goes in and out of focus some more. I think Taz suplexes Smith but again it’s pretty hard to see anything. Surprisingly Taz lets Guido get in some submission attempts early on. Taz with a belly to belly suplex and he locks in the tazmission for the win at 2.33. After the match we get a foul language filled tirade from Taz about how he hates Sabu.

Mikey Whipwreck & Louie Spicolli vs. Dan Kroffat & Doug Furnas, ref Jim Molineaux
Furnas starts off with Mikey. I’m expecting this match to be real good. Same mat wrestling to start and Louie tags in. Kroffat tags in and gives Louie some stiff kicks and loud chops. Louie answers back with chops of his own. Mikey back in and he comes off the top with a double axe handle. Kroffat comes back and grabs the arm and locks Mikey into a cross arm breaker. Furnas tags back in. Crowd getting restless as about 4 minutes not much has happened. Kroffat back in with some hard knees to Mikey. Mikey ducks a clothesline but catches a spin kick in the face. Furnas tags back in and hits a nice drop kick for 2. Krofatt back in and Mikey goes for his legs but Kroffat grabs him and hits a tigerbomb for 2. He follows that with a superkick and then tags Furnas. Mikey hits a frankensteiner and is able to tag out. Louie comes in and starts cleaning house. Mikey joins him and the whip their opponets into each other. Spinbuster by Louie and Furnas drops Mikey on the guardrail outside the ring. Northern lights by Louie but Kroffat kicks out. Kroffat grabs Louie and cobra clutch leg sweep and gets the pin in 7.57.

“Dangerous” Devon Storm vs. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, ref John Finnegan
The great thing about this match is that Damien Kane is not here!!!! Williams beating the crap out of Storm in and out of the ring. Oklahoma slam and a three cout at 2.30. The Eliminators hit the ring and go after Williams. Tommy Dreamer comes out to make the save and they fight off Saturn and Kronus. These four men as well as Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy and “Primetime” Brian Lee meet in a 6man tag match tomorrow night.

ECW Tag Team Champions The Gangstas vs. TV Champion Shane Douglas (w/ Francine) & Sammy the Silk (AKA Samu), ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
Shane comes out and taunts the Gangstas with his belt. This confuses me because they have their own belts so why would that make them mad. New Jack gets on the mic and talks some shit and calls Francine names. Sammy goes after the Gangstas but they double team him as Shane just stands on the apron cheering him on. Shane drops down to the floor every time New Jack goes towards him. Sammy with a big clothesline takes down Mustafa. Shane refuses to tag and as Sammy turns around New Jack comes off the top rope with the 187 to his head. New Jack gets the pin in 2.17. Douglas gets in the ring and yells at Sammy for sucking. Sammy pushes him and Shane hits him with the belt. Swinging neckbreaker by Shane but two other members of the Samoan Gangsta Party come out to make the save. Sammy is down in the ring and seems like he could be legit hurt. After a few minutes he gets up and gets a mic and talks shit about New Jack and Douglas. The fans chant “asshole” at him so he moons everybody.

Saturn vs. Pitbull 2 (w/ Pitbull 1), ref Jim Molineaux
They trade a few blows and reverse each other’s moves to start off. Saturn goes for a springboard moonsault and gets caught in a running powerslam. Pitbull with a press slam for 2 and a powerbomb for another 2 count. Pitbull goes for another powermomb and I think they were going to reverse it into a frankensteiner but Sautrn gets dropped right on his head. They go to the floor and brawl and Saturn seems ok. They fight into the crowd and back to the ring with Pitbull being in control. He comes off the top rope but Saturn drop kicks him on his way down. Pitbull comes back and hits a super fall away slam. They go back to the floor and Pitbull tries a plancha but misses. Back in the ring Saturn with a diamond cutter. Pitbull breaks free of a chin lock but ducks his head as Saturn comes of an irish whip and gets neck breakered. Brainbuster by Saturn followed by an enziguri for 2. Pitbull with a reverse northern lights suplex but cant follow up on it. Saturn comes off the top with an elbow drop for 2. A neckbreaker by Saturn and he goes back up top. This time Saturn hits a knee to the back of the neck of Pitbull. Saturn really working over the neck. Pitbull 1 thinking about throwing in the towel but 2 reaches out and stops him. Piledriver by Saturn and he goes up top for a third times and hits a leg drop. Pitbull 1 throws in the towel but Saturn catches it and throws it back at him. The ref sees none of this and Pitbull 2 crawls up behind Saturn and school boys him for the surprise pin in 13.46.

Falls Count Anywhere Match: Sandman & Tommy Dreamer (w/ Beulah) vs. World Champion Raven & “Primetime” Brian Lee (w/ Tyler & Lori Fullington, Super Nova, Blue Meanie & Stevie Richards), refs John Finnegan & “Pee Wee” Moore
Sandman wants to hug Tyler but Tyler gives him the Raven taunt. They brawl right away and go to the floor and into the crowd. In the ring after a few minutes Lee with the Asiatic spike but Sandman breaks it up and they go back into the crowd. Lee smashes the crap out of Dreamer with a guardrail. Raven and Tommy now in the ring and Stevie hits a superkick for 2. Raven has been busted wide open. They again go back to the floor. Dreamer with a piledriver on a deep freezer for 2. All four men brawling all over the building. Sandman is also bleeding. In the ring Raven gets the cane and nails Sandman and Dreamer. Dreamer with a low blow to Raven. Sandman gets the cane but Raven pulls Tyler in the way. Lee with a chokeslam on Dreamer. Lee now grabs Sandman but he fights him off with the cane. Sandman with a DDT on Raven and he gets the pin in 10.41. The crowd goes bonkers over the win.

Sabu vs. Rob Van Dam, ref Jim Molineaux
They fight over Van Dam’s leg. He breaks away from Sabu and does a back flip which the crowd mocks him about! Sabu flips out of a back drop and drop kicks Van Dam in the knee. Van Dam goes to the floor and Sabu goes after him but gets sent into the guardrail. Sabu reverses a suplex and drops Van Dam across the rail. Sabu sets up a table and puts Van Dam on it. He goes for a triple jump Van Dam rolls into the crowd and Sabu dives on him. Van Dam with an awful looking crossbody and the crowd chants “that was weak” at him. Split legged moonsault by Van Dam and he points to himself a bit. Rolling thunder leg drop for 2. Van Dam with a chair to the head and another leg drop for 2. Sabu picks up the chair and throws it at Rob a few times. Sabu puts Van Dam on the second rope and hits a split legged moonsault onto Van Dam. It looked pretty damn cool. Van Dam drop kicks Sabu off the top rope and goes for the slingshot legdrop with the chair on the face. Sabu throws the chair at him though. Sabu with a NASTY looking triple jump DDT through the table outside! Back in the ring Sabu goes for a somersault leg drop off the top but misses. Monkey flip onto a chair by Van Dam for 2. Bulldog onto the chair for another 2. Van Dam misses and spilt legged moonsault. Sabu with a triple jump DDT in the ring. He goes for another triple jump but crotches himself on the rope. Van Dam with a spring board kick. Front butterfly suplex for 2 as we cross the 15 minute mark. Frankensteiner by Sabu he goes for another triple jump and slips again on the ropes. Van Dam takes advantage but then gets clotheslined. Sabu finally hits the triple jump moonsault and wins the finally battle between Sabu and Rob Van Dam in 16.45. They go to shake hands but Kroffat and Furnas attack from behind. They all brawl to the back.

The Samoan Gangsta Party film an interview back stage. Louie Spicolli helps move around some lights as there are shadows on scars that New Jack put on Sammy the Silk. At on point Louie gets up on a small chair. Paul E. seems very worried and keeps telling him to be careful. It’s pretty funny stuff. They do a few takes and then Gabe the camera men notices that he has a light on the camera that he can turn on.

My thoughts on the show…
Probably my least favorite Van Dam/Sabu match of the match but even still, a very decent match. Plus a little lead into tomorrow’s tag team match. Not a bad show but nothing really worth checking out. Just a bland show. Thumbs in the middle.
