Batista’s WWE Status And Which Big Event He Might Return For

Source: PWInsider Elite

In an update on the recent reports of Batista possibly not returning to WWE due to the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, people close to Batista say he still feels let down and unhappy with how WWE booked his return earlier this year.

It was noted to PWInsider that if he returns to WWE at all, it will be to begin a program for WrestleMania 31. Batista has expressed interest in working a retirement match against Triple H but there has been no word from within WWE that they might go in that direction.

Rob Van Dam posted a Tweet Secret on the “It’s A Secret” app from the SmackDown tapings this past Tuesday, which marked the final night of RVD’s current WWE run.

RVD noted that he fulfilled his contract, just like he did with his last WWE stint that ended last October. As for whether or not it was a good run, he said that it’s subject to opinion and he’ll take that into consideration for when it’s time to return.

New Details On Jake Roberts’ Condition, Correction On Previous Reports, Sinn Bodhi Speaks

0

In the video above, Bill Apter of 1wrestling.com talks with Sinn Bodhi about what has happened with Jake Roberts’ health in Las Vegas this week. Bodhi says Jake’s doctors in Atlanta told him that he had a flu and to sleep it off before he left for Las Vegas.

Jake did not collapse during his flight to Las Vegas on Wednesday, according to a statement from his lawyer Kyle Magee to 1wrestling.com. The story about Jake collapsing on the plane was first stated by Diamond Dallas Page when sending word about Jake’s condition. That statement appears to be a mistake as Magee stated that Jake was unconscious due to treatment while in ICU.

Jake reportedly alerted the flight crew that something was wrong after experiencing breathing troubles & extreme chest tightening, and they arranged for an ambulance to be waiting for him when the plane landed. Jake was rushed to the hospital and it was found that he had pneumonia in both lungs and had very little lung function. He’s still being aggressively treated for that.

Jake is still being tested for the mass found on his brain and there’s some belief that it may be something that is a result of the many years Jake has taken bumps in the ring but Jake has a neurologist who is investigating. Jake’s lawyer noted that the “coma-like state” he was in was induced by doctors in order to effectively treat the pneumonia. He also noted that drugs & alcohol have no bearing on this health scare. Jake received a clean bill of health from his PET scan after having his leg cancer surgery back in May.

Match Thoughts:  A pretty lackluster comedy match.  I think it was a comedy match, I mean Hama wins every match by sitting on his opponents and yet they keep going for sunset flips anyway.  It had its humorous moments but overall there wasn’t much to it.  Score:  4.0

KAZMA SAKAMOTO vs. Koji Kanemoto
They circle each other to start, tie-up, KAZMA pushes Kanemoto into the ropes and kicks him in the stomach.  KAZMA leaves the ring for a moment but returns on his own, tie-up, Kanemoto gets KAZMA into the ropes but again KAZMA kicks him and gets out of the ring.  Kanemoto goes out after him this time but KAZMA rolls back into the ring.  KAZMA kicks Kanemoto as he returns, he goes off the ropes but Kanemoto delivers a kick combination.  KAZMA bites Kanemoto’s hand, armdrag, and KAZMA applies a stretch hold.  Kanemoto rolls out of it and hits a monkey flip.  Back kick by Kanemoto and he hits a jumping knee.  Face wash by Kanemoto to KAZMA and he hits two running boots.  He goes for a third but KAZMA gets up, and KAZMA punches Kanemoto in the face.  Irish whip by KAZMA to the corner but Kanemoto avoids KAZMA’s attack.  KAZMA knocks Kanemoto to the mat and chokes him.  KAZMA goes for a suplex near the ropes, Kanemoto blocks it but KAZMA manages to suplex Kanemoto from inside the ring down to the floor.  KAZMA leaves the ring, elbows by KAZMA and he clubs Kanemoto in the back.  KAZMA slides Kanemoto back into the ring, he picks him up but Kanemoto punches KAZMA in the stomach before hitting him in the face.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Stomps by KAZMA and he hits a falling headbutt.  Another headbutt, cover, but it gets a two count.  Bodyscissors by KAZMA but Kanemoto elbows out of it.  Mongolian Chops by KAZMA, he goes up to the second turnbuckle but Kanemoto kicks him as KAZMA jumps off.  Enzigieri by Kanemoto, kicks to the leg by Kanemoto but KAZMA kicks him back.  KAZMA goes off the ropes but Kanemoto kicks him and applies an ankle hold.  KAZMA kicks Kanemoto off but KAZMA hits an inside cradle for a two count.  KAZMA goes for a schoolboy but Kanemoto rolls through it.  Kick to the head by KAZMA, cover, but it gets a two count.  KAZMA picks up Kanemoto and goes for a scoop slam, Kanemoto gets out of it and applies a waistlock, reversed, but KAZMA hits Kanemoto low.  Inside cradle by KAZMA but it gets a two count.  KAZMA goes for a double knee but Kanemoto ducks, scoop slam by Kanemoto, he goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving headbutt.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Kanemoto picks up KAZMA and hits a scoop slam, KAZMA gets back up but Kanemoto hits a kick combination.  Kanemoto goes off the ropes but KAZMA catches him with a lariat, cover, but it gets a two count.  KAZMA picks up Kanemoto and hits a scoop slam, but Kanemoto grabs his leg and applies the ankle hold.  KAZMA can’t make it to the ropes and he is forced to tap out.  Your winner:  Koji Kanemoto

Match Thoughts:  Not bad but not great either.  I know Kanemoto likes the ankle hold, which is great, but I really wish he would do some leg work leading up to it.  It doesn’t have to be ten minutes of stuff, just…  something.  KAZMA didn’t show much here, I am not sure if he just doesn’t have anything to show or is just trying to be a ‘heel’ so he doesn’t do any real offense.  Just an average match.  Score:  5.0

Hiroshi Yamato and Daiki Inaba vs. Yoshihiro Takayama and Rob Terry
These teams seem horribly mismatched on paper.  Yamato and Terry start things off.  Tie-up, and Terry throws Yamato to the mat.  Yamato gets back up, tie-up, and Terry throws Yamato to the mat again.  Kick by Yamato, he goes off the ropes but Yamato can’t knock Terry down.  Yamato goes off the ropes again with the same result, he tries a third time but Terry shoulderblocks him down.  Back bodydrop by Terry and Yamato tags in Inaba.  Inaba clubs at Terry but Terry easily knocks him to the mat.  Irish whip by Terry, Inaba dives at Terry but Terry doesn’t go down.  Inaba jumps on Terry’s back, Yamato runs in the ring but Terry lariats him while Inaba is still on his back.  Terry tags in Takayama and drives Inaba back into the turnbuckles.  Takayama gets into the ring and he clubs Inaba in the back.  Takayama picks up Inaba and hits a headbutt.  Irish whip by Takayama and he hits a back bodydrop.  Takayama picks up Inaba again and he clubs him in the corner.  Yamato runs in but Takayama headbutts him and throws Inaba near the ropes so he can choke him with his boot.  Scoop slam by Takayama and he tags Terry back in.  Inaba clubs at Terry but Terry picks him up and hits a scoop slam.  Elbow drop by Terry and he tags in Takayama.  Takayama picks up Inaba and rakes him in the eyes.  Chops by Inaba which have no impact, and Takayama hits Inaba to the mat.  Inaba goes off the ropes but Takayama hits him with a big boot.  Takayama throws Inaba into the corner and tags Terry back in.  Terry picks up Inaba and hits a shoulderblock before applying an arm lock.  Takayama picks up Inaba and twists on his arm.  Club to the back of the head by Terry, he picks up Inaba and throws him in the corner before tagging in Takayama.  Takayama pushes his boot into Inaba’s face until Yamato breaks it up.  Takayama pushes Yamato back and throws Inaba out of the ring.

Match Thoughts:   I was right, this was a mismatch.  This was just done to set up Takayama vs. Terry, who never got along during the match and got into a fight after the match.  This was done at the expense of poor Yamato who apparently is going to stay a bottom feeder in W-1.  Inaba is a rookie so such treatment is to be expected, but Yamato has been wrestling for seven years and had multiple title reigns in All Japan so it is a bit surprising.  As for the match it was mostly a squash, but the comeback spots by the smaller team were done well and once the slow plodding part was over the end was entertaining.  Score:  5.5

Danshoku Dino vs. Minoru Tanaka
Dino goes to the mat to start the match while Tanaka complains to the referee.  Waistlock by Tanaka, Dino reverses it into a wristlock but Tanaka rolls out of it.  Dino reverses it but Tanaka escapes, and both men face off again.  Kick to the stomach by Tanaka and he applies a side headlock but Dino reverses the hold.  Tanaka Irish whips out of it and the two collide with neither wrestler going down.  They do it again, Dino goes off the ropes, pancake by Tanaka but Dino jump down on top of him and Tanaka scurries out of the ring.  Tanaka returns after a moment, kick by Dino, snapmare by Dino and he I guess tickles Tanaka.  Dino goes off the ropes and hits a headbutt to the groin.  Testicular Claw by Dino and Tanaka escapes from the ring again.  Dino chases Tanaka around the ring and catches him, but Tanaka slides Dino into the ring.  Tanaka gets back in, kick to the chest by Tanaka but Dino hits a Dragon Screw Testicle Whip.  Vertical suplex by Dino and he hits a knee drop.  Dino drops his pants and tries to sit on Tanaka’s face and he finally does, but it only gets a two count.  Dino goes up to the top turnbuckle  but Tanaka punches him while he is up top and goes up as well.  Superplex by Tanaka, cover, but it gets a two count.  Tanaka goes up to the top turnbuckle while Dino encourages him, so Tanaka climbs back down.  Dino charges Tanaka, Tanaka moves and Dino kisses the referee instead.  Jumping kick by Tanaka and he hits a brainbuster.  Cover, but the referee is still recovering.  Tanaka goes over to the referee but Dino hits Tanaka from behind.  Dino hits the Lip Lock Tanaka which somehow knocks him out, Dino starts untying Tanaka’s pants but the referee stops him.  Tanaka climbs into the ropes as Dino claws at his tights, then Dino grabs the referee.  The referee has seen enough and calls for the DQ.  Your winner:  Minoru Tanaka

Match Thoughts:  Not really my thing.  I guess the appeal here is to see Tanaka in a situation that he isn’t usually in, being in the ring with a wrestler of Dino’s…. style.  But even for a Dino match it was a bit goofy and the non-finish wasn’t overly satisfying since Dino doesn’t usually go that route (getting DQed intentionally).  So not a big fan of the match even if it was unique.  Score:  3.5

Yasufumi Nakanoue vs. Yuji Hino
Tie-up to start, Hino pushes Nakanoue against the ropes and he gives a clean break.  Tie-up again, Hino pushes Nakanoue into the corner but again he gives him a clean break.  Side headlock by Nakanoue, reversed by Hino into a hammerlock, and Hino smacks Nakanoue in the butt.  Irish whip by Hino but they collide with no result.  Nakanoue goes off the ropes again with the same result.  Nakanoue tries again but Hino knocks him down with a hard shoulderblock and hits a fist drop.  Nakanoue goes off the ropes but Hino throws him out of the ring.  Hino goes out of the ring after him and Hino chops Nakanoue in the chest.  Hino takes Nakanoue back towards ringside and throws him onto the floor.  Nakanoue fights back but Hino chops him in the chest.  Club to the back by Hino, he picks up Nakanoue and slides him back into the ring.  Hino goes back into the ring as well and throws Nakanoue into the corner.  Chop by Hino but Nakanoue comes out of the corner and fights back.  Hino chops Nakanoue down but Nakanoue gets back up.  They do this again, elbows by Nakanoue and kicks and he applies a double underhook, but Hino back bodydrops out of it.  Hino picks up Nakanoue and chops him back into the corner.  Irish whip by Hino to the corner but Nakanoue moves when he charges in.  Irish whip by Hino but Nakanoue hits a jumping lariat.  Butterfly suplex by Nakanoue, he goes off the ropes and hits the Bombs Away.  Cover, but Hino kicks out at two.  Nakanoue goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving elbow drop.  Nakanoue waits for Hino to get up and goes off the ropes, Hino knocks him back and chops Nakanoue in the chest, and they trade strikes.  Hino wins the battle but Nakanoue gets back up and Hino chops Nakanoue into the ropes.  Elbows by Nakanoue, he goes off the ropes but Hino catches him and hits a Samoan Drop.  Cover, but Nakanoue gets a shoulder up.  Hino picks up Nakanoue and hits a lariat, cover, but it gets two as well.  Irish whip by Hino and he hits a hard lariat, cover, but Nakanoue kicks out at two.  Hino grabs Nakanoue and drops him with the Fucking BOMB, cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Yuji Hino

Match Thoughts:  Not as good as I was hoping it would be, being a new Hino fan, but not bad.  Part of the issue is I never felt that Nakanoue had a real chance of winning; he was just too man-handled during the first half of the match.  Hino messed around most of the match but the way things went in the last 30 seconds implied that he could have destroyed Nakanoue at any time.  Nakanoue plays a fine underdog but something was just lacking here.  Still a solid match, but nothing more than that.  Score:  6.0

Gabaiji-chan vs. Masakatsu Funaki
Gabaiji-chan walks around with his cane to start the match and weakly kicks at Funaki but Funaki catches one and trips Gabaiji-chan. Cross kneelock by Funaki but Gabaiji-chan gets his cane onto the ropes.  Gabaiji-chan pokes Funaki with his cane but Funaki takes it from him and throws it out of the ring.  Gabaiji-chan tries to leave the ring but Funaki grabs him, Gabaiji-chan goes off the ropes and he dropkicks Funaki.  Swandive body press by Gabaiji-chan, cover, but it gets a two count.  Gabaiji-chan goes for a chokeslam but Funaki kicks him back, snapmare by Funaki and he delivers a PK.  Funaki picks up Gabaiji-chan and hits a few knees followed by a high kick.  The referee declares that Gabaiji-chan is out cold.  Your winner:  Masakatsu Funaki
Funaki tells Miyamoto to get into the ring, and he does.

They circle each other to start and Funaki kicks Miyamoto in the legs.  Kick to the chest by Funaki and Miyamoto rolls out of the ring.  Miyamoto gets back into the ring after a moment, and Funaki kicks Miyamoto into the corner.  Kicks to the chest by Funaki, he drags Miyamoto out of the corner and he hits a series of mounted punches.  Miyamoto hits a low blow from behind, atomic drop by Miyamoto and he hits the Million Dollar Driver.  Mounted punches by Miyamoto and a vertical suplex, cover, but it gets a two count.  Miyamoto goes off the ropes but Funaki hits a snapmare and kicks Miyamoto in the chest.  Miyamoto goes for another low blow but Funaki avoids it and hits the Hybrid Buster.  Cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Masakatsu Funaki

Match Thoughts:   This was mostly for storyline reasons as Miyamoto kept paying off people to fight Funaki, but finally he had to fight him himself.  It didn’t go very well.  Since Miyamoto had been kept pretty strong I am surprised that he was put away so easily after all of that, but I guess losing to Funaki isn’t really going to hurt him.  Not much of a match however, I think that Miyamoto and Funaki could have a good match if they were given more time.  Score:  5.5

KAI, Masayuki Kono, and René Duprée vs. Manabu Soya, Kaz Hayashi, and Shuji Kondo
KAI and Soya start things off, trading elbows back and forth.  Irish whip by Soya but they collide with neither man going down.  KAI goes off the ropes but they collide again with no result.  They do this a few more times until finally Soya shoulderblocks KAI to the mat. Match Thoughts:  A pretty decent six man tag.  I am not a big fan of the thing where one of the team members doesn’t really like his other team members and acts like he doesn’t want to team with them.  It makes for an odd dynamic, they fixed it in the post-match but it did hurt the flow of the match a bit and I find it a bit grating.  The action itself was solid if not sometimes a bit run-of-the-mill, but nothing was really bad.  More of a storyline match since in the end KAI seemed to ‘officially’ join Kono’s group, but it was fine for what it was.  Score:  6.0

(c) Seiya Sanada vs. Seiki Yoshioka

Match Thoughts:  This match definitely had its entertaining parts, it was just a bit too ‘back and forth’ for me.  Meaning that the bigger moves of the match generally meant nothing… a wrestler would hit a few big moves, their opponent would recover and hit a few big moves, etc.  They really didn’t do transitions or anything like that, they just took turns.  Also Yoshioka’s offense is really limited, which he showed by going for the senton bomb twice.  Even with that though the match wasn’t bad, they kept up a really good pace for the entire match, it was exciting and the crowd enjoyed it.  They action was very crisp, no noticeable miscommunications or anything like that and the time went very quickly.  So a mixed bag but more good than bad, even if I wish it was structured a bit better.  Score:  6.5

Final Thoughts:

Best Match: Seiya Sanada vs. Seiki Yoshioka. While I wouldn’t consider this a great match, it was certainly a good one. The too-even-tit-for-tat issue is one I have seen crop up more recently and its not a trend I am a big fan of, but it isn’t the worst thing in the world. Yoshioka is very on target with his kicks and Sanada does a good job of mixing in his high flying moves and strength moves such as the suplexes, and they kept a fast pace through the match which helped it stay exciting from start to finish. Not a MOYTC of course but a solid main event.

Overall: In many ways this is the epitome of an ‘average’ event. Almost all of the matches were at least average (in my opinion), but none were great and there were a few matches that served no real purpose. The main event was above average but would have fit in just as easily in the mid-card, it didn’t really feel like a main event level match. The action throughout was fine, but felt uninspired and there was nothing special on the card. There are definitely worse events out there, but there was nothing here that a typical fan needs to go out of their way to see.

The “OH MY GOD!” Review: ECW TV 9/21 & 9/28/93

TV 1993-09-21 (Matches taped 1993-08-08 from ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA)

Champions
Heavyweight: “Fabulous” Shane Douglas
TV: “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka
Tag: Vacant

TV Champion “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka (w/ Magnificent” Don Muraco) vs. Metal Maniac, ref John Finnegan
Joey Styles makes his ECW TV debut here. Maniac with a sunset flip for 2. Snuka with a chop takes down Maniac. Styles lets us know that at Bloodfest coming up Snuka will defend in a steel cage against Terry Funk. Snuka with a crossbody but Maniac rolls through and gets 2. Maniac goes for a slam but Snuka gets a small package for the win in 2.35.

Joey Styles is in the control room and he hypes Bloodfest, the next big ECW show. We go to Ultraclash Tod Gordon and Matty in the House are interviewing Tigra and Angel concerning the Fall Swimwear Showdown coming up at Bloodfest. Matty tells them that they are hot but he wants to introduce them to the hottest one Women. Women makes her debut her and gets on the mic but Joey talks over her.

Styles very dramatically takes us to highlights of “Wildman” Sal Bellomo being attacked by Rockin’ Rebel at UltraClash. Back in the studio Styles is on the phone with Bellomo’s doctor. Bellomo has a fracture on his jaw, a broken nose, he lost 3 teeth and has a detached retina. The doctor says there is no way Bellomo will be able to wrestle at either night of Bloodfest. Styles questions if he will ever be able to wrestle again. The doctor says that they do not know right now.

Joey brings us to an interview that Jay Sulli conducted with JT Smith. Sulli wants to know if Smith will be able to make it to Bloodfest after his fall off the scaffold at UltraClash. Smith cuts an absolutely terrible promo. It was so bad I’m not even sure what he was trying to say he stuttered so much.

Matty in the House is in the studio with Public Enemy. They want the NWA Tag Team Belts. Roc wants the belts because he wants to get out of the ghetto. Enemy are very hyped up and challenge anybody to a tag team match. We get the Public Enemy versus Jason Knight and Ian Rotten match from UltraClash.

Jay Sulli comes running into the studio and tells him two guys are trying to break into his car. He runs outside to find the Public Enemy trying to break into his car. They play it off like they were just hanging out and help him into the car.

Paul E. Dangerously is backstage and he hypes ‘Bloodfest’ and Heavyweight Champion “Fabulous” Shane Douglas.

We see VERY brief clips of the Baseball Bat Match from Ultraclash.

We go back out to the parking lot where Public Enemy are challenging the Headhunters to a Bat Match. Lots of words are bleeped out. PE are going to get the belts, make some money, and move out of the hood.

Joey in the studio hypes Bloodfest’s 2 days worth of action one more time as we end the show.

My thoughts on the show…
This show was really boring. Only one new match and it wasn’t good. JT Smith has one of the worst interviews I have ever seen and Styles at this point was very green. Just watch the whole Sal Bellomo portion of the episode to get an idea of how bad this show is. Thumbs down on this.

Joey Styles lets us know that we are just three days away from NWA Bloodfest at the ECW Arena. Matty shows up and he is in the house!

Opening video.

Joey is in the control center. He runs down some of the matches and events coming at Bloodfest. Hunter Q. Robbins III is backstage and he has added a smug tone to his voice. Robbins is bringing in Sabu for the Bloodfest shows. We get a few highlights of Sabu in Japan.

Joey brings us highlights of the contestants in the Fall Fashion Show coming up at Bloodfest. Participants include Women, Angel, Tigra and Jay Sulli. Each of them cuts a very short promo during the video package.

Joey runs down some more of the card at Bloodfest and then throws it to our first match of the show.

PA State Champion Tony “The Hitman” Stetson (w/ Hunter Q Robbins III) vs. “Ironman” Tommy Cairo ref Jim Molinueax (UltraClash 1993-09-18)
Review of this match is taken directly from my UltraClash review. Stetson jumps Cairo before the match and beats him to the mat. Stetson throws Cairo to the floor outside the ring. Spinning heel kick by Cairo in the ring and Stetson goes to the floor. Cairo with northern lights suplex. Stetson tries to crawl out of the ring but crotches himself on the ring post. Back in the ring Stetson takes control but Cairo overpowers him and slams him. Cairo with a belly to belly but Stetson gets his foot on the rope. Another belly to belly for 2 and Stetson goes to the floor again. Back in Stetson slams Cairo and stomps away. Cairo with a corner whip and he charges with a back elbow Stetson gets his foot on the ropes on the pin attempt. Snap suplex but Stetson again with his foot on the rope. Flying clothesline by Stetson. Robbins distracts the ref allowing Stetson to hit Cairo with the belt and get the pin at 7.32.

Matty is in the house and he wants you to call the ECW Hotline to find out what matches are happening at Bloodfest on Friday and which are Saturday.

Joey is still very upset over what Rockin’ Rebel did to Sal Bellomo at UltraClash. He is pretty much about to cry and tells us to hid our children so they don’t see what happened.

“Wildman” Sal Bellomo vs. Canadian Wolfman ref Jim Molineaux (1993-08-08)
This match was filmed before Bellomo was injured at UltraClash. Joey and Paul E. Dangerously are on commentary. A bodyslam and splash finish off the Wolfman in 3.24. Those were seriously the only wrestling moves in the match.

After the match we go back to Joey and he brings us highlights from UltraClash when the Rebel attacked Bellomo. We go to last weeks phone call between Joey and Bellomo’s doctor.

A promo video airs for the Terry Funk vs. Jimmy Snuka cage match at Bloodfest. Back to Joey in the control center. Public Enemy takes on the Headhunters in a steel cage match and we see highlights of the Headhunter match from UltraClash with comments from the Public Enemy.

Kevin Sullivan is on the beach and tells Abdullah the Butcher that he is not afraid of him. Sullivan hypes the match he has coming up at Bloodfest with Abdullah and we see clips of what happened between them at UltraClash. Women joins Sullivan and says that she is going to be at ringside for the match after she wins the Fall Fashion Show.

My thoughts on the show…
A fairly weak episode here. One match from UltraClash, and then a bad Sal Bellomo match, as well as some hype for ‘Bloodfest’ that didn’t get me interested in it at all. This show gets a thumbs down. A couple of bad shows in a row, but I’m sure things will turn back around.

Match Thoughts:  This was a decent opener as Honma kept the crowd and Smith didn’t waste any time in beating him up.  I think the crowd actually likes Honma failing in that it is entertaining to see him keep messing up, although I’d sure they would appreciate it if he does somehow win one.  Overall a nice way to start but nothing captivating.  Score:  6.0

Lance Archer vs. Yujiro Takahashi
Takahashi dropkicks Archer in the knee to start the match.  Takahashi kicks Archer in the leg around the ring but Archer grabs Takahashi by the neck and throws Takahashi over his head.  Archer picks up Takahashi and clubs him in the back.  Takahashi goes off the ropes and hits a chop block, he grabs Archer by the leg and kicks him in the knee.  Elbow to the leg by Takahashi and he hits a splash on Archer’s leg.  Takahashi stomps on Archer’s head, Takahashi pulls Archer’s leg around the post and slams his leg into it.  Archer pulls back on his leg which rams Takahashi into the ring post.  Archer picks up Takahashi, punches by Archer while he is on the apron but Takahashi kicks Archer in the leg.  Takahashi gets back in the ring and kicks Archer in the leg, he puts his leg on the bottom rope and jumps down onto it.  Takahashi and Archer punch at each other, Takahashi grabs Archer by the leg and applies a single leg crab hold.  Archer reverses it but Takahashi makes it to the ropes to force a break.  Kick to the leg by Takahashi and he elbows Archer in the head.  Archer hits him back but Takahashi kicks him in the leg, Takahashi goes off the ropes but Archer hits a spinebuster.  Archer waits for Takahashi to get up and he hits a shoulderblock.  Archer picks up Takahashi and hits a full nelson slam, cover, but it gets a two count.  Archer picks up Takahashi and goes for the Blackout, but Takahashi gets out of it and hits an Olympic Slam.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Takahashi charges Archer and hits a big boot, he grabs Archer and goes for the Fisherman Buster but Archer blocks it.  Kick to the leg by Takahashi, Archer goes for a suplex but Takahashi lands on his feet and kicks Archer in the leg.  Takahashi goes off the ropes and hits a lariat, but Archer doesn’t go down.  Takahashi puts Archer on his shoulders but Archer gets out of it and hits a Texas Tornado.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Archer pushes Takahashi into the corner and puts him up on the turnbuckle, Archer goes for the Blackout but Takahashi slides down his back.  Low blow by Takahashi, Archer charges Takahashi but Takahashi pushes him off and hits another low blow.  Small package by Takahashi and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Yujiro Takahashi

Match Thoughts:   If Takahashi could have stayed focused it almost might have been good.  The leg work was fine but it had no impact on the end whatsoever.  You don’t have to work over to limb to win with two low blows and a small package.  I know that Takahashi is a heel and all but he went sub-Yano to win this match which was a bit disappointing as Archer does not need protecting.  And Archer was Archer of course.  Not the best structured match and it didn’t do either of them any favors.  Score:  3.5

Doc Gallows vs. Yuji Nagata
They circle each other to start, tie-up, wristlock by Nagata but Gallows breaks it up.  Side headlock by Gallows, Nagata Irish whips out of it but Gallows shoulderblocks him down.  Nagata is back up, stomps by Nagata but Gallows clubs him to the mat.  Elbow by Gallows and he locks knuckles with Nagata, pushing him down to his knees.  Nagata suplexes out of it, Nagata goes off the ropes and hits a big boot, sending Gallows crashing out of the ring.  Nagata goes outside and tries to throw Gallows into the guardrail, but Gallows reverses it.  Gallows clubs Nagata in the back and throws him back in the ring, Gallows throws Nagata into the corner and he hits a body avalanche.  Lariat by Gallows, cover, but it gets a two count.  Gallows goes off the ropes and hits a splash, cover, but he gets a two count.  Elbow to the chest by Gallows and he applies a reverse chinlock.  Nagata elbows out of it and goes off the ropes but Gallows hits a back elbow.  Elbow drop by Gallows, cover, but it gets a two count.  Gallows picks up Nagata and punches Nagata into the corner.  Gallows throws Nagata into the corner but Nagata kicks Gallows in the knee.  More kicks to the leg by Nagata, Irish whip, reversed, and Nagata slaps Gallows before dropkicking him in the knee.  Big boot by Nagata and he hits an exploder.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Nagata grabs Gallows but Gallows punches him off, kick by Nagata, Irish whip to the corner, reversed, but Gallows’s knee is hurt so he can’t run.  Big boot by Gallows and he hits a lariat, cover, but it gets a two count.  Gallows picks up Nagata and hits an inverted full nelson slam, cover, but it gets a two count.  Gallows picks up Nagata again but Nagata kicks him in the knee, he goes off the ropes but Gallows grabs him.  Nagata gets away and applies the seated armbar, but Gallows makes it to the ropes.  Nagata picks up Gallows but Nagata hits a heel kick.  Shining Wizard by Nagata in the corner, he goes for the backdrop driver but Gallows elbows him off.  Nagata hits a German suplex, cover, but it gets a two count.  Nagata picks up Gallows and goes for the backdrop suplex again but Gallows gets out of it, Nagata goes off the ropes but Gallows boots him back and delivers a big boot.  Gallows picks up Nagata and hits the Gallows Pole, cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Doc Gallows

Match Thoughts:   Again some structure issues, or just Nagata being stubborn.  What’s the point of the seated armbar after so much leg work?  He has leg submission holds, working the arm at that stage of the match is just wasting time.  It was nice of Gallows to sell the leg late but Nagata never went for it late, he just went for his standard moves without thinking about the work up to that point.  Gallows was fine but Nagata was on offense most of the time and it was just a bit too disjointed for my tastes.  I’m glad Gallows won, Nagata didn’t deserve it.  Score:  4.0

Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Togi Makabe
Tenzan starts out with a lariat as they trade dueling lariats, Makabe goes off the ropes and another lariat sends Tenzan to the mat.  Makabe picks up Tenzan but Tenzan hits a few Mongolian Chops, sending Makabe down.  Chop to the throat by Tenzan, and Makabe falls out of the ring.  Tenzan goes out after him and chops Makabe against the guardrail, Irish whip attempt by Tenzan but Makabe reverses it and then lariats Tenzan over the guardrail.  Makabe gets back in the ring as Tenzan slowly follows, Makabe picks up Tenzan and he punches Tenzan back.  Makabe picks up Tenzan and he hits a vertical suplex.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Makabe applies a reverse chinlock on the mat until Tenzan gets to the ropes.  Makabe picks up Tenzan and punches him in the head, Tenzan elbows him back and they trade shots.  Knee by Makabe and he stomps Tenzan in the back.  Makabe goes off the ropes but Tenzan catches him with a Mountain Bomb.  Mongolian Chops by Tenzan and headbutts Makabe in the corner.  More headbutts by Tenzan, Irish whip, and Tenzan hits a lariat in the corner.  Tenzan goes up to the top turnbuckle and he hits the calf branding.  Cover, and he picks up a two count.  Tenzan picks up Makabe and elbow him in the back, and Tenzan hits a vertical suplex.  Cover, but again it gets a two.  Tenzan goes off the ropes but Makabe catches him with a powerslam.  Makabe charges Tenzan in the corner and hits a lariat, mounted punches by Makabe in the corner and he goes for the Northern Lights Suplex but Tenzan blocks it.  Elbows by Makabe, he goes off the ropes and Tenzan hits a heel kick.  Saito Suplex by Tenzan, he goes up to the top turnbuckle and he hits a diving headbutt.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Tenzan applies the Anaconda Vice, he picks up Makabe but Makabe elbows out of it.  Elbow by Makabe but Tenzan elbows him back.  Mongolian Chops by Tenzan, he goes off the ropes as Makabe goes for a lariat, but Tenzan ducks it.  Tenzan goes off the ropes but Makabe clubs him in the chest.  Makabe picks up Tenzan and he hits a powerbomb.  Makabe goes up to the top turnbuckle and he hits the King Kong Kneedrop.  Cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Togi Makabe

Match Thoughts:  At least Makabe didn’t set up the King Kong Kneedrop with the spider German this time, so there is some progress.   A pretty simple match, not a lot happened here.  Tenzan controlled most of it but Makabe did go for the Kneedrop with some urgency, so he seemed to be keenly aware that Tenzan was not that hurt.  Sadly it just wasn’t memorable in any way, just another match so to speak, even though it wasn’t actively bad or anything like that.  Score:  5.5

Minoru Suzuki vs. Tetsuya Naito
Wristlock by Suzuki to start, Naito rolls out of it but Suzuki applies a side headlock.  Naito reverses it but Suzuki gets out of that and both wrestlers return to their feet.  Suzuki goes for a kick, Naito mostly catches it but Suzuki pushes him into the ropes.  Suzuki slaps Naito, Irish whip, reversed, and Naito delivers a dropkick.  Suzuki falls out of the ring, Naito goes out after him but TAKA grabs him from ringside.  Suzuki kicks Naito off the apron and then kicks Naito in the chest.  Suzuki applies an armbar outside of the ring, he picks up Naito and throws Naito into the guardrail.  Suzuki twists Naito’s leg in the guardrail and Suzuki chokes Naito with a flag.  Suzuki throws the flag at Naito and then boots him in the head.  Back in the ring, kicks to the back by Suzuki but Naito elbows him and they trade blows.  Kick to the chest by Suzuki, cover, but it gets a two count.  Suzuki picks up Naito and chops him, elbows by Suzuki but Naito slaps him back.  Hiptoss by Naito and he dropkicks Suzuki, Irish whip and Naito hits a senton.  Naito goes up to the top turnbuckle and he hits a missile dropkick to Suzuki.  Naito kicks Suzuki in the corner and goes for the slingshot dropkick, but Suzuki catches him and applies a leglock.  Suzuki picks up Naito but Naito punches him back.  Suzuki trips Naito and he applies a cross kneelock.  Naito crawls to the ropes and is able to grab the bottom one to get the break.  Suzuki kicks Naito in the leg, but Naito gets into the ropes.  Enzigieri by Naito, Suzuki gets up in the corner, Irish whip by Naito, kick, leg sweep, and he hits the slingshot dropkick.  Naito picks up Suzuki and puts him on the top turnbuckle, he joins him but Suzuki elbows Naito back.  Naito charges Suzuki but Suzuki applies an armbar, and he applies a cross armbreaker on the mat.  Waistlock by Naito but Suzuki reverses it and goes for a sleeper, but Naito gets out of it.  Waistlock by Naito and he rolls up Suzuki for a two count.  Suzuki gets the sleeper applied but Naito gets out of it and hits the overhead kick.  Irish whip by Naito, reversed, and Naito hits the jumping elbow strike.  Reverse DDT by Naito, he goes up to the top turnbuckle but Suzuki rolls out of the way of the Stardust Press.  Suzuki kicks Naito, he goes off the ropes, Naito goes for a roll-up but Suzuki blocks it and hits Naito in the back of the head.  Suzuki goes off the ropes and hits a kick, takedown by Suzuki and he applies the sleeper.  Naito can’t get out of it and he goes to sleep, leading the referee to stop the match.  Your winner:  Minoru Suzuki

Match Thoughts:  A solid but not great match.  Suzuki’s work on the outside was good but the match meandered a bit after that until they got close to the finishing stretch.  Suzuki targeted both the knee and the arm, then won with a sleeper, so he was just grasping at anything he could get his hands on.  Naito looked fine but did nothing special in this match to stand out from all the other matches I have seen of him recently.  A solid affair but nothing that will blow you away.  Score:  6.5

Match Thoughts:   I think going for the Bad Luck Fall three times in a seven minute match is a bit excessive and odd as Fale does have other moves like the Grenade.  So not sure what that was all about, also while the ending was a bit of a let-down I think it was done to make the points line up right without Fale actually pinning Shibata.  While I didn’t love the count out at least it was from two solid looking moves and not just Shibata losing track of the count or something.  So not a great match, but honestly it wasn’t really trying to be.  Score:  4.0

Match Thoughts:  Lots and lots of stomps.  This match started really really slowly and with no focus whatsoever (besides stomps), but once they got over that it was decent.  The middle was just non-existent, it almost went straight from “opening match offense” to “trading finishers” without much of a transition between the two.  The middle part of the match is usually the hardest part to do so I guess this was one way to get around it.  The end was fine, but the rest was rather lackluster.  Score:  5.0

Match Thoughts:  You could tell from the start these two were not messing around, with a powerbomb on the apron and a suplex into the guardrail within the first minute.  I actually loved this match, from start to finish.  It had a huge big match feel, maybe even to a fault as they were both kicking out of monster moves but it was such a change of pace it didn’t even bother me.  I have to make sure I don’t over-rate it since I am comparing it to the other matches on the last few cards, but there was just so much logical here.  Just non-stop, they mixed up their moves and in general it was just a really fun match.  My favorite match of the tournament thus far.  Score:  8.5

Match Thoughts:   This was fine, not much more than that.  Both of these guys are good wrestlers so they were fluid, but the offense was a bit all over the place.  Tanahashi did briefly sell the leg work, I just wish that Benjamin had some other move in his arsenal that targeted the ankle.  So it was pretty good, not great but they did a few things to make it stand out and the emotion was there.  Score:  6.0

Match Thoughts:  Another good but not spectacular match.  The outside of the ring bit lasted too long, and I am not sure what their focus was as there wasn’t much of a structure.  They were just taking turns for parts of it.  On the plus side the reversals and spots were very fluid and well done, you could tell that these two are very familiar with each other.  It was also never boring as they kept the action pushing from bell to bell.  So some issues here and there but overall a solid affair. Score:  6.5

Final Thoughts:

Best Match: AJ Styles vs. Karl Anderson. I think on any night this would have been a really fun match, but in comparison with the last few nights of the G1 Climax it really stood above the rest.  From start to finish the match was hard hitting, they varied up the moves and it just felt like an important match.  It wasn’t more important than most of the other matches but they made it seem like it was.  Just a great and entertaining match.

MVP:  AJ Styles. Styles is really proving he is ‘the man’ in this tournament, I don’t want to hear anyone say going forward that Styles in New Japan is a bad thing.  I mean he pulled a four star match out of Karl Anderson, and it isn’t that Anderson is bad, but he doesn’t generally put on the most entertaining match on the card.  Styles busted out some moves here he hasn’t done yet in the tournament and just keeps everything interesting and intense.   He is probably the MVP of the entire tournament.

Overall: A flat show overall, with the exception of Styles vs. Anderson.  Many of the wrestlers seemed to be coasting, yes many of the matches were still ‘good’ but that is because New Japan has such fantastic wrestlers that even on an off day they can be entertaining.  But in general nothing was done to separate this event from any of the prior events and some of the pairings just didn’t work well together.  Watch Styles vs. Anderson, skip everything else unless you just can’t miss any of the G1 Climax action.

Diamond Dallas Page noted to Meltzer that Jake’s condition is stable and he’s coherent. Meltzer described Jake as talkative but “pretty grumpy.”
