The WWE Raw Report 7/18/16

0

Before we get going, I want everyone to stop on over at the Crazymax WWE 2016 Mock Draft and see the break down as we here at Crazy Max would have done it. You can check that article out here!

WWE Raw Preshow Notes For 7/18/16

– Stanford, Graves, Booker T, perhaps for the last time collectively… I hope.

– Rollins Report replay from last week. Whyyyyy? We then recap the Rollins/Ambrose stuff from last week. They meet tonight with the title on the line.

– Raw opens tonight with Stephanie and Shane introducing their picks as Raw & Smackdown General Managers.

– Graves and Booker do a 4 round mock draft. Corey is Raw and selects Rollins, Charlotte, Anderson/Gallows, & Nakamura. Book is Smackdown and selects Orton, Sasha Banks, Usos, & Undertaker. Well that was underwhelming.

– John Cena at the ESPY’s video.

– Big 12 Man Tag signed for Raw tonight. Because the two 6-mans at the PPV isn’t enough. New Day, Cena, Amore & Cass vs. The Wyatts & The Club. They recap the the angles from last week.

– Again, no hype for the Women this week, and no mention of Sasha’s mystery partner announcement. TWO women’s matches at Battleground, and no time spent getting them over… Yet they have time to plug Darren Young vs. Del Rio for tonight. Sigh

The WWE Raw Report 7/18/16 from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, RI

STEPHANIE / SHANE MCMAHON – GENERAL MANAGER SEGMENT

Raw Commish Steph is out first. Smackdown Commish Shane interrupts her immediately. Thank God… Stephanie tlks about “lady balls”… Gross.

Stephanie announces tht Raw will now feature an exclusive Cruiserweight division. Well that ruined that. SD has the “future vision, but Raw gets the Cruisers.

Stephanie introduces MICK FOLEY as the GM of Raw. Ugh. Foley more homeless looking than ever. Foley took risks all throughout the Monday Night War, and now he’s willing to take risks for Raw. Let’s see how long Foley lasts before he quits after he doesn’t like a storyline or push.

Shane begins to announce his. The fans chant “YES”…. BLAH. It is indeed, Daniel Bryan… Ugh. But at least his fucking sheepdog hair is cut…. SD is the underdog, Bryan was the underdog, so he’s back for the fans to do it together again.

Stephanie says a B+ Player for B+ Program…

Shane says Steph had to marry HHH to stay relevant on TV…

Daniel Bryan says YES, Smackdown will succeed….

20 minute segment. It didn’t drag. It was fine for what it was. Foley didn’t do much. Crowd erupted for Bryan. It’s amazing what a haircut will do for some people. He actually seemed human.

MATCH #1: KEVIN OWENS & CHRIS JERICHO VS. SAMI ZAYN & CESARO

Insert promo of Zayn hyping his “biggest match” with Owens ever at Battleground. The faces control to begin, Owens soon cuts things off and the heels take over maybe 2 or 3 minutes in and we’re off to break.

Back from break, Jericho sends Zayn to the floor, but Sami is able to take out Jericho and Owens on the floor. Hot tag to Cesaro. Uppercuts-o-plenty on Jericho. Uppercut train on Jericho & KO. Jericho counters a Cesaro swing with a roll up for 2. Cesaro comes back with a springboard corkscrew uppercut for a near fall. Jericho counters the Neutralizer with an enzuigiri… Hot tags to KO & Zayn, they do indy punching. Zayn counters the Pop Up Powerbomb with a dropkick in mid air. Jericho & Cesaro tag bck in. High Cross body by Cesaro gets 2. Jericho tries the Walls, but Cesaro counters into the Cesaro Swing…

Cesaro tags Zayn… Zayn drops Owens, but Jericho is the legal man. Jericho tries sneaky pin, but Zayn counters into a cradle for 1..2…3…

Zayn & Cesaro win in 12:00.

– Backstage, the jobbers are kissing up to Daniel Bryan… Goldust, R-Truth, Jack Swagger, Titus O’Neil… Stephanie stops Bryan and they have some back and forth. He casually tells Stephanie “congratulations on ruining Raw” and just walks off… Lol…

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #2: ALBERTO DEL RIO VS. DARREN YOUNG (w/BOB BACKLUND)

Miz & Maryse on commentary. A little back and forth. Young in control and Miz gets up on the apron. The distraction allows Del Rio to get up, and cradle Darren, but Miz is still distracting the referee… So now Del Rio argues with Miz… Darren Young pushes ADR into Miz and lands the rolling cradle with the BACKLUND BRIDGE for the win in 2:25. It was a sloppy Backlund Bridge, but still cool to see.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

JOHN CENA, ENZO & CASS / THE CLUB / NEW DAY PROMO SEGMENT

Cena with a mini-interview to promote everything going on this week. He intros Enzo & Cass, who do their usual spiel. Enzo runs down The Club pretty good. Calls Gallows boring, says AJ has soccer mom hair, and says Anderson is like Times New Roman font, as generic as there is. lol. Cena gets into the comedy with them, but he wants them to take this match serious at Battleground. Cass says they have fun with the fans, but they take their wrestling seriously. The Club is SAWWFFFF….The Club interrupts the SWAFT spiel.

AJ Styles calls Cena a turd in the punch bowl… Umm okay. Anderson knocks team Cena for not having chemistry. Gallows says the Club has chemistry. Tonight they get to… “Beat up John Cena” and others as well…

AWWWWW, don’t you dare be sour… It’s New Day out next, not selling their time in the swamp with the Wyatts at all. Even Xavier is dancing. Ugh. New Day shrug off the Wyatts mind games. Bleh. Woods is back to his old self all of a sudden after almost being chopped in half last week. I give up. Woods is so “worried” that he begins to rattle off Pokemon Go characters to “How you doin?” chants. UGH

Wyatts interrupt just as New Day Rocks. Wyatts head to the ring as we go to bring… Sure, give everyone a promo EXCEPT Bray Wyatt… WHAT THE EFF.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH 3: JOHN CENA, ENZO, CASS, & THE NEW DAY VS. THE WYATT FAMILY & THE CLUB

12-Man Tag joined in progress. Cena tries his shoulder tackle on Gallows, but Luke doesn’t move and Cena takes a bump. Big E tags in and taints Gallows. Big E belly to belly on Gallows. Now it’s Strowman & Big E, and Strowman runs him over. Enzo tags himself in, he wants big Braun. Strowman drops Enzo, lol. Big Cass tags in, he and Strowman stand face to face. Strowman slaps Cena, and we end up with all 12 men in the ring fighting… It clears out to just Cass and Strowman back inside. BIG BOOT to Braun. Kofi tags in and jumps on Strowman, he’s supposed to catch Kofi but falls, LOL… Seriously? You can’t fucking catch KOFI??????? It’s official, this guy is AWFUL… Anyway, Strowman gets back up with Kofi like he didn’t fall and he plants Kingston to take control. Raw goes to break…

Back from break, Wyatt is beating down Kofi. Cena gets the hot tag and starts to control, but he’s quickly cut off, and the 6 heels take turns beating down on John. Styles hits his own version of the AA, onto his knee, and gets 2… Gallows eventually misses a splash and Cena starts to crawl towards his corner, but we go to break again.

Back from another break, Cena still hasn’t tagged out. Wyatt has control. Bray misses a senton, Cena hot tags to Big Cass… AJ tags in as well. Cass knocks the heels off the apron and Empire Elbow to AJ. Cass tries a fall away slam but Strowman attacks from behind. And now everyone starts running in and hitting signature moves. Wyatt blocks and SOS and kills Kofi with a urinage. Woods hits a somersault dive out onto the Wyatts. Cass ducks a Phenomenal Forearm and takes AJ out with a big boot. Anderson lays out Cena with a spinebuster. Enzo jumps off the top with a flying DDT on Anderson. I missed a lot of shit here, just too much going on, lol…

Styles goes for Styles Clash on Enzo, but Amore escapes. Enzo tries a clotheline, but Styles ducks. Enzo clobbers Cena by accident! Enzo turns into an AJ Pele kick and then the Styles Clash ends it in 19:00+.

The Wyatts and New Day brawl to the back. The Club celebrate. Cena lays on the floor with Enzo & Cass on the other side. They try to play up how the faces can’t trust each other like the established heel group.

– Backstage, Apollo Crews is kissing up to Steph and Foley.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

SETH ROLLINS PROMO

– Earlier today, we see Seth Rollins walking around the empty arena. He cuts a promo hyping this week’s matches and his willingness all along to split the Shield for his own gain. He says Reigns will never be the same, and calls Ambrose a thief and coward. Seth talks about recovering from his injury, winning his title back, and Dean stealing it. Tonight, Seth says he will end Ambrose’s fairy tale as champion. And at Battleground he will prove he was always “the man”.

– Backstage, Foley is with Breezango…. Shane interrupts to talk with Mick. He wants to know why Foley would work for Steph. Foley knows Stephanie is ruthless and how she can be. But Foley says Stephanie has passion and she can better Mick, give him an edge again. Mick gets a little smart with Shane and walks off. Shane tells Foley to “Have a Nice Day, Bang Bang”.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #4: BARON CORBIN VS. SIN CARA

Cole announces the Lucha Dragons have split for singles aspirations… Why not just have them drafted separate? Cara controls early with some decent stuff. Corbin no sells a springboard body block and hits End of Days for the win in 1:19….

Corbin attacks Cara post match…. Kalisto comes out to make the save… Didn’t Cole JUST say they were split? Corbin slides outside, but attacks Kalisto from behind. The crowd is dead for ALL of this….

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #5: SASHA BANKS & BECKY LYNCH VS. CHARLOTTE & DANA BROOKE

I’m pretty sure Sasha was supposed to unveil her mystery partner for the PPV tonight. I’m also pretty sure that this is basically the same match we’re going to see at the PPV in 5 days, sans Lynch. Why not just plug Natalya in Charlotte’s spot here, and when you don’t give away your PPV match and you get over the Nattie/Becky match at Battleground. Eh, WWE.

The faces work over Brooke to start. They have complete control for a couple of minutes, Nattie attacks Lynch on the floor and beats her down. This causes a DQ win for the faces in 2:24. Sasha takes notice and comes to save Becky, but Charlotte attacks. Charlotte and Brooke beat down Banks in the ring with Lynch laid out on the floor thanks to Nattie.

These women’s matches haven’t been getting any TV time lately.

– Backstage, Bryan & Shane are chatting with Demon Kane.

– Dean Ambrose cuts a promo in the old Shield camera. Ambrose will retain tonight. Ambrose will retain at Battleground.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #6: SHEAMUS & RUSEV (w/LANA) VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER & ZACK RYDER

You know, they split up that foreign group thingy months ago, yet they continue to team in some capacity almost every week. Ryder is all over Sheamus to start, Rusev distracts and Shemus sends Zack to the floor. The heels beat down Ryder on the floor and take over in the ring. Zack manages a neckbreaker Hot tags to Rusev & Ziggler. Crowd is dead. Famouser on Rusev gets 2. Ryder and Sheamus fight to the floor. Rusev hits a hot shot on Ziggler, a big jumping kick to the back of Dolph’s head, and the Accolade. Dolph jobs like a complete bee-otch in 3:47. UGH

– Randy Orton video hyping his return and match with Brock at Summer Slam.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

– Cena at the ESPY’s Video

– WWE Draft Rules shown

– The Ascension try and get Foley to draft them. Daniel Bryan interrupts and wants to talk with Mick. Bryan isn’t cut throat like Shane & Steph, he wants to be up front with Mick and wishes him luck. Daniel says he wants them to stay good with each other because they have a lot in common. They take a few tongue in cheek jabs at each other and end things a little serious. They understand there’s a competition.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

We’ve got Steph & Foley, and Shane & Bryan sitting at ringside for the title match.

MATCH #7: WWE CHAMPION DEAN AMBROSE VS. SETH ROLLINS

Some basic wrestling gets things going, Ambrose maintains control for much of it. Seth stalls for a bit but Dean takes right back over and clotheslines Rollins to the floor where he hits a clothesline, and then a second clothesline off the apron as Raw goes to break.

Back from break, Rollins gains control and methodically beats down Ambrose. A double clothesline drops both men. Ambrose meakes a comeback… PERFECT PLEX gets a near fall on Rollins. Crowd is kind of dead, and suck. Both men trade pinning combinations. Dean hits a neckbreaker for 2. Rollins comes back looking for the pedigree but Dean escapes. Rollins knocks Ambrose outside and tries a dive but Dean stops it. Ambrose sends Seth outside and hits his own suicide dive.

Rollins winds up driving Dean into the barricade and then hits a RUNNING POWERBOMB INTO THE BARRICADE on Ambrose… Back inside, Seth with a FROG SPLASH for a near fall, and Raw goes to break.

Back from the final break, Ambrose counters a powerbomb into the corner with a huracan rana into the corner on Seth. Dean counters a pedigree with a catapult, but Seth leaps up top and hits a FLYING KNEE, but misses a second Frog Splash!!! Both men are down.

Dean and Seth trade some wild shots. Seth hits an anzuigiri!!! Powerbomb in the corner on Ambrose!!!! But Dean stumbles out and hits DIRTY DEEDS!!!!!!!!

1…………2…………. Rollins leg on the rope!!!!!

Seth rolls outside and Dean goes to the announce table. Dean begins to set up putting Rollins through the table, but Rollins rolls off. They fight on the apron, Seth clotheslined back inside. Dean goes up top for the flying elbow, but ROLLINS CATCHES HIM IN THE PEDIGREE!!!!

1…………….2……………..

AMBROSE KICKS OUT!!!!!!!

Rollins goes for a second Pedigree. Dean counters with a kack knife for a near fall. Dean with the WICKED CLOTHESLINE!!!

Ambrose back up top for the flying elbow, Seth meets him up top. Dean shoves Seth off and into the ref… BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Ref goes down. Rollins leaps back up, top rope SUPERPLEX!!!!

Both men cradle each other’s legs…. Ref counts 1…………2………………3………… But both men’s shoulders were down… Ugh… Here we go after 22:00.

Both Commissioners enter the ring… Stephanie deems Rollins the winner, Shane says Ambrose is the winner. Stephanie announces Seth as the winner. Shane argues with Steph at ringside. Raw goes off the air with Rollins celebrating with the title, but the announcers are unsure of what just happened… WTF…

Stay tuned to Smackdown people…. We will be covering Smackdown Live with our brand new Smackdown reviewer beginning tomorrow night with the draft.

WWE Mock Draft 2016 Results – Crazy Max Style

0

We’re likely not the only website running a WWE Brand Extension Mock Fantasy Draft here in 2016, but I like to think we put some thought into the draft and effort into the presentation.

If you’ve ever mock drafted or fantasy drafted for Fantasy Football or other sports, this is pretty much in the same vein. We threw together a few loose rules and got to working on the project. The rules are as follows…

* We are allotted a total of 40 picks in all. That’s 20 picks for Raw, 20 picks for Smackdown. the Raw end of things will be drafted by myself BJack, while the Smackdown side of things will be drafted by our resident screen capper xStat32x.

* All roster members are in play. WWE and NXT. Superstars (male & female), etc…

* Tag Teams – Every 8 picks or so we call an audible and each draft a tag team to keep things fair and the rosters even. In the mean time if either promotion wants a specific tag team member at any time, they are welcome to select them as a singles pick. Tag teams do NOT need to be drafted together, but can be. Again, for the interest of fairness.

* With rumors of old unsigned talent returning to help beef up the rosters we discussed possibly making a few picks of that nature. But when we couldn’t establish who could REALISTICALLY be drafted due to potential contract situations with other promotions (Jeff Hardy in TNA, Misterio possibly with LU, etc…) we decided to waive the idea of drafting outside talent for the sake of keeping it realistic.

1. Dean Ambrose

Probably not first on most lists, but close to it. I simply think Dean has “IT”. They jobbed him out in every high profile story he was in for a year or more and he just kept getting over. I think he makes a great face or heel. In my world he’s a baby face to get things going. Maybe a heel turn down the line when the time is right. Dean is entertaining, will do anything asked of him in a match, cuts a solid promo, and constantly sells his gimmick. He has everything but “the look”, which was never a big thing to me anyway. I think he has longevity and connects with the people in a Roddy Piper meets Cactus Jack sort of way.

#2 – Seth Rollins – Smackdown
With Smackdowns first pick, Shane McMahon selects Seth Rollins! With this pick we add the most versatile wrestler on the roster. Seth Rollins can work with any type of wrestler and makes the life of General Manager Shane McMahon a whole lot easier. He will deliver night in and night out and be the best wrestler in all of WWE. He is a great foundation for the redesigned Smackdown.

3. John Cena

This is why I wasn’t concerned with taking Ambrose first. While not a favorite of mine, with John Cena still extremely credible, selling merchandise, and basically in the “Hulk Hogan” spot in the company, I don’t have to worry about immediate attendance, merchandise, or major rating dips. I select John for the name value and what he brings to the table for my company both financially and credibility. And with the right foes, Cena can put on a decent match.

#4 – Brock Lesnar – Smackdown
With Smackdowns second pick, Shane McMahon selects Brock LESNAR!!!! I believe this pick explains itself. Brock Lesnar is one of the baddest dudes on the planet and whenever he steps foot in the wrestling ring it is a spectacle because you never know what he may end up doing. He is one of the biggest draws in wrestling and will easily be one of the top 2-3 talents on Smackdowns roster. Now we just need to convince him to come back full time….

5. AJ Styles

A guilty pleasure. This was an instance where I planned to take Bray Wyatt, but was surprised to see Styles still sitting here. Don’t have to write much here. AJ is new to the company but already has main event credibility, it’s a no brainer. Tons of ways to use him, but I hated the heel turn so I’d eventually get him back in the face spot. The minute I took him, my Smackdown enemy made it clear he would have taken AJ already but had forgotten to. I lucked out.

#6 – Randy Orton – Smackdown
With Smackdowns third pick, Shane McMahon selects ‘The Viper’ Randy Orton! Randy Orton is one of the finest technicians to ever step foot in a wrestling ring. He will be one of the key components to the reimagined Smackdown. Whether he is a good guy or a bad guy, he will be a key factor in all the main event title picture.

7. Bray Wyatt

This is simply someone I had to have, and like I said before, I would happily taken Bray at #5 had AJ not been available. The character, the promo ability, the entire aura and character is so far different from everyone else, the Wyatt character could easily be playing at the top of the card right now if WWE would just let him. He’s being held down…. But not on my Raw.

#8 – Cesaro – Smackdown
With Smackdowns fourth pick, Shane McMahon selects Cesaro! This guy never got the chance to break through the glass ceiling on Monday Night Raw. That won’t be the case here on Smackdown. Cesaro is one of the greatest wrestlers in the world and he will be given every opportunity to grab for the “brass ring” that my father loves to talk about. Watch out for Cesaro to be in the match of the night every Tuesday on Smackdown!

9. Kevin Owens

Again, I got this pick in JUST in time. If I hadn’t taken KO at #9, I believe Smackdown wanted him at #10. I personally can’t stand his promos, character, or looking at his sweat hog face… BUT I am easily able to separate my personal likes/dislikes when it comes to business. I will not deny his ability to have really good matches and get heel heat. The top two qualities for me. He’s easily in my upper card just a rung below the main event. But I have no doubt I’d be using him in main events before too long.

#10 – Shinsuke Nakamura – Smackdown
With Smackdowns fifth pick, Shane McMahon selects Shinsuke Nakamura! Nakamura is one of the most charismatic wrestlers in all of the business. He is also one of the stiffest wrestlers in all of WWE. He will be a huge asset to the Smackdown roster and will be right in the mix when it comes to all of the titles on the Smackdown brand.

11. Roman Reigns

Did you ever go into a fantasy football draft saying “I’m not taking this guy unless he falls to a value spot.”? That was the case here. I had ZERO intention of taking Roman Reigns AT ALL… If you’ve ever read my Raw reports, you know my feeling on the Reigns baby face character. And if you haven’t read my Raw reports, A. READ THEM! and B. I hate Reigns in his current role. But at pick #11, I consider that a value for someone who has been pushed in the main event for the better part of the last couple of years. He would return from this suspension in a total heel role. YES, I would listen to the people, because I’m one of them. He’s proven that he can have decent matches with the right opponents, and his smug gestures and attitude will assist him just fine in a role the crowd has already deemed upon him… A heel.

#12 – Finn Balor – Smackdown
With Smackdowns sixth pick, Shane McMahon selects Finn Balor! Balor is one of the top grapplers in NXT and has basically rose that brand to it’s current state. I look for Balor to bring that same sort of credibility and amazing action to Smackdown each and every Tuesday. He may be small in stature but he  can work with anyone and will be a great competitor and a force to be reckon with on Smackdown.

13. New Day

This was our first of three “Tag Team Rounds”. I don’t consider New Day the future, but they are the now, and you need some of that too. Not only the tag team champions, but they’re established, they’re over, and they can work when they want to be taken seriously. What better way to start a brand tag division than with the Champs?

#14 – The Club (Anderson and Gallows) – Smackdown
With Smackdowns seventh pick, Shane McMahon selects the combination of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows the Club! They are one of the top tag teams in the world and they will be bringing their intense style to Smackdown every Tuesday night. They have a lot to bring to the table but the question remains, will they be able to dominate like they have everywhere else they have been? Only time will tell.

15. Samoa Joe

My Smackdown Commissioner friend scared me into making this pick next, but it’s not very far off from where I would have taken Joe anyway. With some of the bigger NXT stars headed to Smackdown, it was time I grabbed myself a solid peace of NXT talent. Now this is also where the FANTASY comes into play, because I don’t see Joe getting drafted in the real draft on Tuesday due to NXT obligations as champ. BUT, in a perfect world, Joe is someone who has spent years on top for a variety of promotions, is a known commodity, and can immediately be plugged into the upper card without being questioned.

#16 – Alberto Del Rio – Smackdown
With Smackdowns eight pick, Shane McMahon selects Alberto Del Rio! Del Rio is a ring veteran and a multiple time World Champion. He will fit right in with the talent and other superstars here on Smackdown. He brings an aggression with him that very few talents have. His in ring ability and technical prowess is the reason Alberto Del Rio will be heading to Smackdown.

17. Dolph Ziggler

This is where things start to tier off. Now it’s time to take some risks and start drafting not only for the future, but to fill out the card with solid talent beyond the main event/upper card level. Not to say Ziggler is a risk or doesn’t deserve a high spot, but based off of what WWE has done to his value and credibility it may take a bit to work Dolph back to where he was, if that’s even possible. I like him enough to take that chance, I welcome Dolph Ziggler to the roster and would do everything in my power to gain back his momentum.

#18 – Baron Corbin – Smackdown
With Smackdowns ninth pick, Shane McMahon selects ‘The Lone Wolf’ Baron Corbin! Corbin is relatively new to the wrestling business but his raw strength and power will be a huge asset as he makes his way through the Smackdown roster. He has a bright future and is something that Smackdown can build upon going forward.

19. Chris Jericho

This one is simple. Chris Jericho fell to 19. He doesn’t move as fast as he used to, he’s not setting the world on fire, but when you can take Chris Jericho in the tenth round you’re doing pretty good. Jericho is a solid name, talent, pretty good heel promo, and you know he’s going to at least try and entertain you to his best ability. Credibility and a solid hand. To not take Jericho at #19 would make me a stupid idiot face. Chris Jericho heads to Raw.

#20 – Sami Zayn – Smackdown
With Smackdowns tenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Sami Zayn. Zayn has been all over the world and has worked with some of the best talents in the business. With the vast experience he brings to the table, it will only be a matter of time before Sami Zayn is climbing the ranks of the Smackdown brand.

21. Sasha Banks – Raw

With Raw being 3 hours one thing I knew I needed was variety. And that means a solid Women’s Division. My initial gut feeling here is if I can get just two of the top 4 or 5 ladies between WWE and NXT that I can make that happen. My feeling was I needed to establish this division with a real statement. Sasha Banks IS the future of the Women’s Division, and that plays a bigger factor for me than mid-card men. The BOSS is drafted to kick off the Women’s roster on Raw.

#22 – Rusev – Smackdown
With Smackdowns eleventh pick, Shane McMahon selects Rusev. The Bulgarian Brute brings the intensity and power to dominate inside the squared circle. He is hated by most and that makes him a great asset to the Smackdown roster. He makes a great villain and the boo love to hate him. We need people like that here and there is no one better in that role currently than Rusev.

23. Enzo & Cass – Raw

This round was our second of three Tag Team rounds. I took New Day first because they’re the champs, and they’re established, and I assume they might have gone to Smackdown if I hadn’t. And while I fear Vince’s fetish for big men will see these two separated when the real draft takes place, in my world I KNOW that Cass is only over because of Enzo’s character. Before showing up on Raw, Cass only had one line like Billy Gunn. Vince has heard people cheer Cass so I THINK Vince believes the guy is over on his own. We’ll see how fast that sinks or swims if they go that route. As a fan looking in, I know these two need each other, at least for now. And you can get a good year-long run at the very least with them. New Day is my #1 face team heading in, but Enzo & Cass are a close 2nd. And you can’t.. teach.. that.

#24 – American Alpha – Smackdown
With Smackdowns twelfth pick, Shane McMahon selects the tag team of American Alpha. This is one of the best young tag teams in the business. They have great chemistry as a team and can bring it inside the ring. They are what you want for your tag team division and that is why they are heading to Smackdown.

25. Neville – Raw

Did you forget about Neville? On the cusp of a decent push, Neville fell to an injury at the worst time, WrestleMania season. But he’s back working dark matches and could be back on TV as soon as this week. Very talented in the ring, never a loss for having an entertaining match, Neville makes up part of a very talented mid-card with aspirations of more.

#26 – Apollo Crews – Smackdown
With the thirteenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Apollo Crews! He may not be over quite yet and that’s okay, but Apollo Crews has one of the brighest futures in the business. He is a joy to watch inside the ring and, with the right booking, can do wonders for the Smackdown brand. Will be a future stud one day in the WWE.

27. Bubba Ray Dudley – Raw

This was a steal for me. Another “value pick”. Much like Reigns, I had no interest in going after Bubba Dudley, but when he fell this far, why the hell not? I know most think of the Dudleys as a novelty act, doing jobs and working preshows for the last 8 or 9 months… But remember he was the lead heel in TNA not all that long ago. Yes, I know it’s only TNA. But Bubba has proven for 20 years that he knows how to get heat… REAL heel heat. And we’re reminded of that every few months when they let Bubba cut a heel promo. He makes the best of every opportunity he gets. Not a giant fan myself, but I can’t deny what he could do for the roster as a singles heel. I’d lay off drafting D-Von and let him go to Smackdown just so people don’t have a constant reminder with them on the same show. And when Bubba gets stale, boom, you trade for D-Von and bring back the Dudley Boyz for one final nostalgic run.

#28 – Charlotte – Smackdown
With the fourteenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Charlotte! Charlotte will be the foundation of Smackdowns Women’s division. She is gifted in the ring and has the ability to cut a great promo when needed. Her heel tactics make her hated and that is half of the battle. Having her go up against the rest of the women selected will make for great matchups and she will be a big part of the Smackdown brand.

29. Paige – Raw

Like I said, I wanted at least 2 of the top 4 or 5 ladies for my Women’s Division. With women starting to come off the board, it was time to make sure I acquired a solid hand to work with Sasha. Paige hasn’t been given much by way of opportunities to have a good match or angle since the NXT girls arrived, but let’s not forget how good she was prior in the ring. Plus with the Women’s champion presumably traveling to both brands, I can always bring in Charlotte as needed. So technically I have access to three of the top ladies up to this point.

#30 – Bayley – Smackdown
With the fifteenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Bayley! Bayley is great in the ring and she connects with her fans. She is the perfect counter to the antagonist in Charlotte. Pitting those two together will make Smackdowns Women’s division the best on cable TV.

31. Zack Ryder – Raw

This is a guilty pleasure of mine going way back. Much like most of Ryder’s fans, I shook my head at the ridiculous burial of him after he got over, when they had Kane break his back for like 6 weeks straight. Then I got pissed all over again with the nonsensical one day reign as IC Champ after this year’s Mania… They build Ryder back up again for a US  Title match at this week’s PPV, but then job him out to Sheamus in 2 minutes on Raw… Nothing ever makes sense with Ryder booking. Had this draft been before Mania, I’ll admit Zack would be much lower for me, but when I saw he could still get the fans to buy him as a player, I was sold. So let’s take a flyer on Ryder and see what we can do. Woo Woo Woo…. You Know It.

#32 – Asuka –
Smackdown
With the sixteenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Asuka! Asuka is the wild card of the Women’s Division. You never know where she is coming from. However, she is excellent in the ring and can make for great feuds with the likes of Bayley, Charlotte, and Becky Lynch. Smackdown has quite the collection of Women for their Women’s Division.

33. Luke Harper – Raw

Harper’s been out so long with the injury that he may not be in many people’s minds, but can you deny the talent this guy has displayed since coming to the WWE? I believe guys like Rowan and Strowman are interchangeable, replaceable, not entirely “needed” to aid in the Wyatt Family quest, but Luke Harper is by far the most talent wrestler in the group. The Wyatt Family has been stagnant since Harper’s injury, some part due to crappy writing and Wyatt’s own injury, but also because without Harper, they’re down to one guy in the group that can put on a passable match. Harper makes the Wyatt Family almost as much as Bray, and he’s just a hell of a worker to boot. I would have drafted him higher, but figured he may drop this low due to injury. My Raw will wait for him to heal, and when he does….. RUN!

#34 – Austin Aries – Smackdown
With the seventeenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Austin Aries! The greatest man on earth falls to the 34th pick but that doesn’t make him any less of a player. He is one of the best wrestlers in the game and can work any sort of style that you want him to. He has the ability to put on great matches and will really help build the Smackdown brand.

35. The Usos –  Raw

Drafting Team three of three… I drafted two baby face teams and initially intended for American Alpha to fall in this spot… But NOOOOOO… Those bastards at Smackdown took my Alpha pick… And so I go with the Usos. Granted, WWE hasn’t done crap with the Usos in months and have essentially killed all their momentum, but this makes a perfect time for the twins to get a heel run. Sick of being looked over for all the new era teams, the Usos would make a great heel team with some solid matches. Don’t forget how good they had been in the ring prior to this year’s lackluster push.

#36 – The Revival – Smackdown
With the eighteenth pick, Shane McMahon selects the tag team of the Revival! The Revival are throwback technicians that remind me a lot of the Brainbusters. They are technical wizards and they work well with any type of team. They will be able to put on classics with the other two teams drafted to Smackdown, the Club and American Alpha.

37. The Miz – Raw

Remember when I talked about only drafting certain guys on value picks? Well, for me, the Miz is more along the lines of one of those guys where you say “I’m not drafting that guy no matter how far down he falls”… But I guess Ted DiBiase is right, EVERYBODY has a price. The Miz’s price for me is #37 overall. And that’s only for two reasons. One, he’s been relevant since post Mania and is taken somewhat seriously again. And the other reason is, and this is the main reason, he holds the IC TITLE. With Smackdown drafting the U.S. Title with Rusev, and assuming Ryder doesn’t win it at the PPV, Raw needed a mid-card title. I essentially drafted the IC Title here, but the Miz makes perfectly fine mid-card filler once I get the belt off of him.

#38 – Tye Dillinger – Smackdown
With the nineteenth pick, Shane McMahon selects Tye Dillinger! Dillinger is the Perfect 10 of the wrestling business right now and will make a great asset to the Smackdown roster. He is an up and coming star in the making and with the right feuds and progression can be a top guy in the WWE quickly.

39. Undertaker – Raw

The final round and this guy is still available? An overlook on the part of Smackdown? Perhaps, perhaps not. I had no intentions of taking Taker much earlier than this because he’s really only around for Mania season and doesn’t help my plans for a good 10 months of the year. And who knows how many more years we’ll even get out of him. But still he’s the Undertaker, and that one WrestleMania angle every year is a HUGE part of the show. So rather than picking one of a half dozen other names I had jotted down right here, I asked myself what’s more important, An Undertaker WrestleMania angle once a year, or filler to round out my card? I think that question answers itself.

#40 – Becky Lynch – Smackdown
With the twentieth pick, Shane McMahon selects Becky Lynch! She has a great rapport with the crowd and is a pretty big baby face currently. I feel as if she would work better as a heel and can work well with the other Women on the roster.

ROUNDING OUT RAW….

While the parity draft was only scheduled to go 20 rounds, I figured the roster would be a little bit larger than that, so I went ahead and drafted for another 5 rounds. This is more of a “honorable mention” type list of guys I would have grabbed over the next 5 rounds for RAW. The last 4 picks are based off of assuming Smackdown wouldn’t take the person(s) listed in the slot prior to each of my picks.

Pick 41. The Big Show. – I think he has one last run as a serious monster heel.
Pick 43. Kalisto – No interest in the Lucha Dragons team, Kalisto offers some good action. Even though I’d keep them both faces, I’d love to see him work with Neville.
45. Mauro Ranallo –
Let’s not forget how important an announcer is. Ranallo is not only professional, he makes things sound interesting, important… exciting even. Ranallo sells the product in the ring, and doesn’t just go through the motions like Michael Cole.
47. Rowan & Strowman –
In the interest of picking a team every 6 or so picks, I went with a team here. Grabbed these two simply to fill out the Wyatt Family.
49. Jerry Lawler –
This is an instance where I wouldn’t have even thought to take him if it weren’t for recent situations. No, I’m not talking about the arrest situation, I’m referring to how Lawler has turned his announcing career around since teaming with Ranallo. Mauro is more like a Jim Ross announcer and it does two things for the King. It seems to make Jerry more comfortable and he’s not just phoning it in, he has someone to play off of like the good old days. The other thing is I think Ranallo has inadvertently forced Jerry to up his game and enjoy the product again. The announce team is important to me, and I need these two together. Michael Cole is an advertising robot (to no fault of his own), and JBL is just used to spout old facts (many times wrong) and act as Vince’s verbal bully as he relates all of Vince’s negative comments to bury people on commentary. And NOBODY wants Byron Saxton, even though they continue to groom him as the next Michael Cole.

RAW GM THOUGHTS….

The Smackdown roster, created by my cohort in crime xStat32x, proved to be very interesting from the early goings. Smackdown was definitely drafted in vision as the future of the business. Lots of solid picks early with established stars and then the blending of tons of new younger talent fresh out of NXT. With my show, Raw, being the three hour show, I had planned for more variety including a solid Divas division. I knew as long as I had any two of Sasha, Charlotte, Paige, Bayley, Asuka, that I had a good ground to build on. And I did grab Sasha early, and Paige once Charlotte was taken. With Charlotte as champ, I figure she can always travel to Raw. I figured I could build the rest of my Divas division under those ladies. But Smackdown had other plans! SD came in and took a whole mess of talented ladies to give me a good running. I like that competition. Smackdown would be promising with the proper people writing the show to get the young guys going the right way.

I got pretty much everyone I was hoping to grab for Raw and scooped up a few value picks as well. As mentioned, I would have liked to have grabbed a Bayley, Asuka, or a Becky Lynch for a third top lady, but SD got the better of me in that division.

Hope you guys enjoyed our little mock fantasy WWE Draft. Let’s see how close the real WWE comes to drafting these rosters.

WWE Raw Preshow Notes 7/11/16

Hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of July Holiday and any vacations that may have come with it. I’m back this week after taking the 4th off. Should be interesting now that we’re basically a week out from the brand split.

– It’s Stanford, Graves and Booker. Congrats to Brock Lesnar at UFC 200 as they sell #VipervsBeast for Summer Slam.

– Tonight on Raw….
* Vince McMahon Returns!!!
* Plus Battle Royal for the #1 contender for Miz’s IC Title.
* Seth Rollins’ will “tell all” on Roman Reigns.
* They pump Ryder winning both matches last week. Zack Ryder faces Sheamus in a rematch tonight… WAIT…. WTF…..Zack WAS SUPPOSED TO WRESTLE RUSEV FOR THE US TITLE TONIGHT… WTF…???
* Cena has new buddies in Enzo & Cass to deal with AJ and The Club.
* Brother NERO will enter Vanguard 1’s compound…. Errr I mean the New Day enter The Wyatt Family’s compound. Wonder if Luke Harper will be there rehabbing now that his money is done. An interview with Xavier Woods shows him scared but he will be with his team at the compound.

– Earlier tonight at the arena, Breezango mock Sin Cara & Kalisto for covering their “hideous faces” with masks. Cara splashes Breeze with his own drink, Breeze says they ruined his Mongolian Chinchilla fur coat. Match has been signed for Raw… JOY.

Stanford asks Booker if Breezango have what it takes… Booker shits all over them, repeatedly… lol

– Wow, no mention of the Women’s Division at all… That’s not good.

The WWE Raw Report 7/11/16 from Detroit, MI

MATCH #1: IC TITLE CONTENDER BATTLE ROYAL
We kick off with everyone in the ring so I have no idea who all is in this. Miz is on commentary. Apollo Crews, Ziggler, Dudleys, Usos, Ascension, Darren Young, R-Truth, Corbin, Alberto Del Rio, Goldust, Vaudevillains, Curtis Axel, Jack Swagger, Bo Dallas. Hah, Bob Backlund at ringside. So I THINK this is an 18-Man match.

Aiden English out first by Goldust. Konnor gone. Axel gone by D-Von. Truth dumped by Corbin. Viktor gone by Corbin. Uso tried to eliminate the other Uso, but they laugh it off. D-Von eliminated by Uso’s double superkick. That’s 6 eliminated as we head to break.

During the break Jey Uso got dumped by Bubba, and Gotch eliminated by Ziggler.

Back from break, Goldust gone from enzuigiri from Del Rio. Bo Dallas gone by Crews. Jimmy Uso AND Swagger both dumped by Corbin back to back. Bubba dumped by Darren Young. Down to 5.

ADR, Ziggler, Corbin, Darren Young, Crews are left. Ziggler sends ADR to the floor with a superick but he’s not eliminated. ADR is eliminated by Crews. Ziggler gets ousted by Corbin. Corbin & Crews go out together… WTF… Darren Young is just sitting there looking shocked and he wins in 13:20. lol…

Backlund & Young celebrate. Backlund carries Darren in his arms like a bride. The crowd is chanting “Darren Young”. lol… Just wtf….

– So the Wyatts/New Day fight took place “over the weekend” and we will see footage tonight. Wow, they didn’t even wait to rip TNA off.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

– Shane and Stephanie are backstage pondering what Vince is coming to Raw for. Seth Rollins interrupts and wants to do “The Rollins Report”, a report on Roman Reigns… He acts like he’s just pitching this, even though it was confirmed earlier today.

– They hype Brock winning UFC 200, and now meeting Randy Orton at Summer Slam. Orton will be on the Highlight Reel at Battleground.

– Backstage, Zack Ryder challenges Rusev backstage, but Sheamus attacks. They’re next.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #2: ZACK RYDER VS. SHEAMUS
Zack Ryder’s new music sucks…. If you’re going to keep the same exact song, just use the original instead of a new version. Ryder gets all the offense, Sheamus counters a Broski boot with a clothesline, but Ryder comes back and lands a Broski Boot anyway. Sheamus managers to his his Brogue Kick and pins Ryder like a bitch in 2:30 at best. WOW…. Way to keep that momentum…

THEN, RUSEV comes power-walking out and attacks Ryder, applies the Accolade and screams repeatedly “I Accept Your Challenge”.

Double momentum killer within a 5 minute span… F-U WWE.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #3: LUCHA DRAGONS VS. BREEZANGO
Cara can’t get a Lucha chant going, lol. Breezango use some heel tactics to get heat on Cara. Finally, a springboard moonsault to Fandango and Cara can get a hot tag to Kalisto. Kalisto blows a springboard and FALLS ON THE ROPES…… Kalisto recovers with some NICE ASS KICKS and a short rana driver on Breeze. Cara wipes Fandango out on the floor with a top rope body block. Back and forth with Breeze & Kalisto. Breeze superkicks Kalisto’s face and rolls him up off the middle rope for the win in 4:21.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

THE ROLLINS REPORT, WITH SETH ROLLINS. TOPIC, ROMAN REIGNS.

Rollins to the ring. He airs a video with former Roman Reigns interviews spliced in, so that it looks like he is interviewing Reigns. The minute it becomes obvious the crowd shits on it and stops paying attention. As do I. This is your typical play off of a fake interview. Rollins rips Reigns, and plays Reigns responses to agree with him. Video is short, thankfully.

Back to Seth in the ring, and cue DEAN AMBROSE to the ring. Some back and forth banter. Seth says this comes down to who’s the best member of the Shield at Battleground. Dean talks about people leaving the company for other endeavors, people getting suspended, but through it all he’s been here, he’s the king, he’s the backbone, and it’s been that way for a long time, and now he has the belt to prove it… NICE

Rollins says he will meet Ambrose….. NEXT WEEK.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

– Vince McMahon arrives. He’s here to announce the Smackdown GM… or COO…or whatever they’re called. He will do that later tonight.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #4: KEVIN OWENS VS. CESARO
Sami Zayn comes out for commentary but is forced to leave because Owens considers it an unsafe working environment… Unfortunately, I missed the majority of this 12:00 match dealing with family issues… Owens wins with a fireman’s carry rack into a neckbreaker.

Post match Owens takes Byron Saxton’s headset and bitches about Zayn, when Sami comes FLYING OVER THE BARRICADE… Zayn beats down Owens and sends him into the ring for a lengthy Cesaro Swing… KO stumbles away.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

– Interview with AJ Styles & The Club… They don’t think Cena is here… Enzo & Cass will suffer…

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #5: TITUS O’NEIL VS. HEATH SLATER (w/AXEL & DALLAS)
Titus powers Slater around, Heath comes back with some nice moves, but O’Neil powers back with his signatures and Clash of the Titus ends it in 3:00.

– Renee Young interviews Sasha Banks. She faces Dana Brooke tonight. They pushed her buttons, tonight she doesn’t get mad, she gets real.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

NEW DAY VISITS THE WYATT FAMILY COMPOUND
Not going to try and “call” this. Weird video effects for the fight… New Day are in the swamps or something. An open area of land sees a girl in a white dress and sheep mask approach, then a bunch of headlights turn on. New Day walk by an abandones truck when a car plows into it… It’s the Wyatt Family… The brawl begins with tires, barrels, mud, trees, windshields, you name it… Bray tries to murder Woods with a pick axe, but it gets stuck in the tree… Nice…

Wyatts half murder the New Day, then New Day comes back and fend off the Wyatt Family… Bray kneels and laughs as several sheep men step out from the car headlights, and behind them a hundred firefly lights begin to glow… The New Day appear beaten up and scared and back up… End video…

Well that was…. interesting….. Better production and quality than the Brother Nero match, but nowhere near the trainwreck… For what this was, it wasn’t bad, but I’m not sure what the point was either.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #6: ENZO & BIG CASS VS. GALLOWS & ANDERSON
Match starts during the break after intros. Much like the Cesaro/Owens match, unfortunately I have some things going on around the house that couldn’t avoid being attended to. My apologies as this is the first time to happen in the 30+ months I’ve been doing this. Match goes through another break as the heels get heat.

I’m only sitting down as Cass gets the hot tag and clears the ring. Empire elbow to Anderson. Cass just mauling Anderson, fall away slam, stinger splash, big boot. Tag to Enzo for the Rocket Launcher on Anderson… Styles distracts Cass and he goes tumbling to the floor… Enzo gets a 2 count on Anderson before Gallows breaks it up. Meanwhile AJ is caught attacking Cass on the floor to draw a DQ…

Match went around 12:00, possibly longer. It’s hard to say since it started during a break.

With Cass laid out, the Club looks to triple team Enzo when JOHN CENA’S music hits… As if there is a doubt, Cena is here. Cena out to make the save, and the 3 faces clear the ring and celebrate to Cena music.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

MATCH #7: SASHA BANKS VS. DANA BROOKE (w/CHARLOTTE)
This Dana Brooke project needs to come to an end. It’s not working, and neither is glamouring her up and trying to make her a character she’s not made for. Brooke runs early. Sasha slaps the shit out of her… More running. Kills the crowd. Banks hits a variant of the Thesz Press, and a top rope arm drag. Brooke finally grabs Sasha by the hair and kicks her to the floor. We go to break.

Back from break, Brooke has control. Crappy side slam gets 2. Dana does a hand stand boot choke in the corner. That was different at least. A cartwheel into a splash. Meh. Gets 2. Banks makes the comeback. Signature Double stomp on the middle rope for 2. Brooke tries a superplex off the top but Banks throws her off… Sasha high cross body for 2 on Dana. Brooke comes back trying something out of a fireman’s carry, but Banks lands on her feet and counters with the Banks Statement for the tap out win in 12:00.

Banks wins!

Post match, Charlotte on the mic. She doesn’t think Banks proved anything, because anyone can win once. Charlotte says Sasha needs to beat Brooke again on Smackdown and then MAYBE Sasha can get a title shot… Since when does Charlotte make that decision???

– Vince is in the back walking…. with the most ridiculous tie ever.

— COMMERCIAL BREAK —

VINCE MCMAHON / SHANE MCMAHON / STEPHANIE MCMAHON SEGMENT, WHO WILL RUN SMACKDOWN???

Shane McMahon out first. Then Stephanie is out next. And then the boss Vinnie Mac.

Vince says they’ve both done a pretty good job but he’s disappointed in them. He mocks Stephanie’s character. lol… And then Shane, he shouldn’t even be here but he got the job out of respect. But neither has Ruthless Aggression… Vince doesn’t want them, he wants someone that will be competitive… He asks both of his kids to sell him on hiring them as Commissioner of SD…

Steph goes first, running down Shane. Then Shane says how he will change everything, he will be respectful but he’s not ass kissing. Shane wants picked to offer CHANGE. The fans approve.

Drum Roll…..

Shane McMahon is announced as the Commissioner of Smackdown…

Which leaves Stephanie now in control of Raw… JESUS…

Vince wants them to compete for RATINGS, Live event attendance, merchandise, social media, etc… Vince tells them to break the law, without getting caught.

Vince says they’re the Commissioners, but they have to name their own General Managers… WTF? So there’s a Commish and a GM? On both shows? WTF…. Okay.

Stephanie is going to bury Shane and Smackdown. Shane says Stephanie is scared. Shane says Game On. Steph says there’s only one game in this business and she’s married to him. Ugh… Steph smacks Shane. She dares Shane to smack her back. He kisses her… Steph goes to leave and trips… LOL….

What’s the point of being Commish if you need a GM… lol

That wacky WWE.

Reliving a Feud – Issue 14: Sid Vicious vs. Goldberg

0

havoc

By the fall of 1999 World Championship Wrestling was struggling along, looking for anything to spark interest in their product. In the summer, Sid Vicious made his return to the company after being gone for six years after an infamous incident with Arn Anderson. Upon his return, Sid would align himself with Randy Savage, but that wouldn’t last too long as Savage would be gone from WCW.

As most of you know Goldberg had a lengthy undefeated streak from 1997 to 1998 in WCW. After a couple of months in WCW, Sid became obsessed with breaking Goldberg’s streak. Most of Sid’s “victories” were when he would get involved in a match and attack the contestants before pinning them in impromptu unsanctioned matches. Sid would have referee Charles Robinson hold up a sign with the amount of victories he had each week. During this “streak”, Sid won the WCW United States Championship from Chris Benoit at Fall Brawl on September 12th, 1999.

Shortly afterward, Sid’s feud with Goldberg began. Sid was obsessed with breaking Goldberg’s streak while Goldberg was focused on regaining the WCW United States Championship, which he held in 1998. During the September 23rd edition of Thunder it was revealed that Sid got a restraining order against Goldberg saying that he can’t touch him prior to Halloween Havoc.

On the September 27th edition of Nitro, Goldberg got inside Sid’s head. He was able to get a hold of Sid’s car keys and would have Sid’s car demolished. At the end of the show, Sid stood on the crushed car and screamed out Goldberg’s name. It was actually a so bad it was humorous type segment.

The following week on the October 4th edition of Nitro, Sid attempted to get revenge on Goldberg by having his car compacted like his was last week. However, Sid’s assistant screwed him over and parked Sid’s car in the spot that Sid believed Goldberg’s car would have been. When told about the news, Sid ran out to the parking lot and screamed out “Why Me?”

Goldberg broke the no contact rule on the October 11th edition of Nitro when he speared Sid. Sid got involved in the tag team main event and taunted Goldberg. That lead to Goldberg spearing him. Don’t worry, their match at Havoc is still on.

The following week on Nitro, six days away from Havoc, Sid had a lawyer with him saying that since Goldberg broke the stipulation that their match at Havoc was now off. Sid would rip up the contract, but Goldberg ran down to the ring and took the lawyer out with a spear. Sid would plant Goldberg with a powerbomb to get some momentum heading into the pay per view contest.

Prior to their match at Havoc, Goldberg attacked Sid backstage and busted him wide open. Seriously, Sid was bleeding buckets. Anyway, Goldberg beat the living crap out of Sid and as a result the referee stopped the match due to blood loss. So, Sid’s “streak” was over and Goldberg won the WCW United States Championship. The feud would continue on, though.

It would continue the next night on Nitro where Sid Vicious and the Outsiders attacked Goldberg. Sid hit a powerbomb on Goldberg and that allowed Bret Hart to win the WCW United States Championship.

On November 8th edition of Nitro Sid showed evidence that Goldberg said “i quit” at Halloween Havoc. His evidence was simply yelling into a microphone the words while footage of the match was shown. It was rather silly. Goldberg would spear Sid and issued a challenge for WCW Mayhem to an I Quit Match. Goldberg would spear Sid a second time during Sid’s match with Lex Luger.

The blow-off to the feud took place on November 21st at WCW Mayhem. After about two months of build and a memorable match at Havoc, mainly because of how much blood Sid lost, Goldberg was able to beat Sid in just over five minutes of action by choking Sid out. Sid didn’t utter the words “I Quit”

The next on Nitro their feud was tossed out the window as Sid would turn babyface and team with Goldberg to take on the Outsiders. They would lose the match.[spacer height=”20px”]

Bob’s Opinion:
For a heated feud that these two had, it was kind of goofy. The feud started off with Sid wanting to end the steak and Goldberg wanting the gold. That’s fine and dandy. Then it turned into both men wanting to crush the other guy’s car. Sid was made to look foolish during the build up towards their Havoc match.

The Havoc match did a good job in making Goldberg look like a destroyer and Sid as a man who could take a beating. There was very minimal build towards their match at Mayhem, which may explain why it got so little time. At the time, Sid was starting a mini feud with the Outsiders. So, looking back at everything it wasn’t a total shock that Sid ended up turning babyface.

When you look at the feud, Goldberg never made Sid tap out or pin him. Sid lost the first one by referee stoppage and passed out in the second match. In my opinion, Sid was the first real threat to Goldberg in a long time. Maybe the first threat since Goldberg had a series of matches with the Giant in late ’98.

The feud is average at best. A feud between Goldberg and Sid sounds good on paper and the first month of the feud provided some decent television, but they stopped putting much of an effort into the feud and it failed to deliver. Thus, I can’t give the feud a positive recommendation.

What are your memories of the Goldberg/Sid feud? Leave your thoughts below.

Thanks for reading.

Colling’s Corner: A Look Back At The 1991 PWI 500 Rankings

0

Pro_Wrestling_Illustrated_-_December_1991

For the past twenty-five years Pro Wrestling Illustrated has accepted the challenge of ranking 500 of the best wrestlers during each of those years. Sometimes there have been questionable rankings and times when they actually forgot to include wrestlers.

I’ve decided to take a look at each publication of the PWI 500 and see the interesting listing, dispute their rankings and show the progression of wrestlers through the years.

I’m not going to list all 500 guys, but instead point out interesting rankings and see the progression or decline throughout the years. For a full listing of 1991 PWI 500, click HERE.

The issue started in 1991 and has been a staple for the publication ever since. Lets take a look at the top 10 for 1991.

Hulkamania running wild on the PWI 500!

1.) Hulk Hogan
2.) Lex Luger
3.) Ric Flair
4.) Randy Savage
5.) Sting
6.) Scott Steiner
7.) Ricky Steamboat
8.) Steve Williams
9.) Arn Anderson
10.) Rick Steiner

It’s quite clear as to why Hogan was number one. He had a big year by winning the Rumble, beating Slaughter at Mania VII and was able to successfully end his feud with Earthquake. Also, we can’t forget that he had numerous matches with Ric Flair at the tail end of the year. Sure, he lost the WWF World Championship at This Tuesday in Texas but a week later regained it by defeating the Undertaker at Survivor Series. Oh, by the way, they forgot to include the Undertaker and Terry Gordy. Yeah, that’s a head scratcher, I know. Anyway, Hogan at number one is perfectly fine. He had a strong year in comparison to the remaining top ten.

Luger is a close second, but a victim of Flair leaving WCW in the summer. Had Luger won the WCW World Championship at Great American Bash in June over Flair instead of Barry Windham, I think Luger gets over the hump and takes number one. Luger was a double champion holding the WCW United States and WCW World Championships after the win at the Bash. Luger continued his reign as champion leading into 1992 successfully defending against Ron Simmons at Halloween Havoc.

Flair didn’t seem to have an overly huge year. Sure, he was champion and never lost the WCW World Champion, but something just seems to be missing. He didn’t get traction going in the WWF until ’92, but I suppose their not being many top stars made it an easy pick for Flair to be in the top 5.

Not sure why or how Randy Savage was ranked number four as he was “retired” following his loss to the Ultimate Warrior at Mania VII. He wouldn’t return to action until the fall. Seems a bit high and that’s coming from a Macho Man fanatic.

Interestingly enough, Rick Steiner is ranked lower than his brother Scott Steiner despite Rick getting several WCW World Championship matches against Lex Luger, of course he was unsuccessful in those attempts. Scott was unsuccessful going after the WCW Television Championship that was held by Steve Austin. The most memorable moment for the Steiner Brothers was their classic match at Superbrawl against Lex Luger and Sting, which they won.

It’s shocking that Ricky Steamboat was in the top ten of the list. He was in the WWF for most of 1991 and literally had matches with the Barbarian and other mid card talents. Being ranked at number seven seems extremely high considering the other talent listed, which we will get to. Steamboat returned to WCW in November and won the WCW World Tag Team Championships with Dustin Rhodes, but it’s no way plausible to have the Dragon this high, at least not in 1991.

Moving out of the top 10…

Would you trust Jake Roberts?

11.) Ultimate Warrior
21.) Bret Hart
23.) Jake Roberts
28.) Jeff Jarrett
29.) Ron Simmons

Despite leaving the WWF in August, Warrior still had a big year. Sure, he lost the WWF World Championship to Sgt. Slaughter at the Rumble, but he beat Randy Savage at Mania, was successful in a feud against the Undertaker and teamed with Hogan to victory at SummerSlam. That seems more top ten worthy than Steamboat.

The rise of Bret Hart started in 1991 and gets a top 25 ranking. A fine place for the tag team wrestler who got his biggest victory against Mr. Perfect at SummerSlam 1991 to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship. 1991 was a very strong year for the Hitman. He might have been a top 15 ranked wrestler.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts started off getting quite a bit of sympathy when he was nearly blinded for life by Rick Martel and beat Martel at Mania VII in a blindfold match. By the summer, Roberts was the most hated man ruining the Savage/Elizabeth wedding at SummerSlam and embarked in a truly personal and awesome feud with Savage to close out 1991. That period could be Jake’s best work.

Jeff Jarrett had a busy year in USWA where he won the USWA Heavyweight Championship four times and the USWA Tag Team Championships four times. Sure, his father Jerry Jarrett ran the company, but regardless Jeff had a stellar year full with success.

In the beginning of 1991 Simmons was the WCW World Tag Team Champions with Butch Reed, but they lost the belts in February and Simmons won a cage match against Reed at Superbrawl in May. Simmons continued to rise up the card and got a WCW World Championship match at Halloween Havoc against Lex Luger but came up short in a best two out of three falls match. Bigger things are ahead for Simmons.

The top guy for the GWF, the Patriot.

31.) Steve Austin
33.) Big Van Vader
37.) Shawn Michaels
55.) The Patriot
58.) Bam-Bam Bigelow

Austin didn’t waste anytime upon his arrival in WCW to capture gold when he beat Bobby Eaton for the WCW Television Championship on June 3rd. He’d hold the belt for nearly a year. He also joined the top heel faction in WCW known as the Dangerous Alliance. Austin was a huge part of WCW from the get go.

Vader found success in 1991 overseas as he wasn’t used all that much in WCW. He was the CWA Heavyweight Champion for more than half of 1991 before losing the strap to Rambo. At the end of the year he would win the CWA Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship but was forced to give up the championship upon signing a full-time contract with WCW and a contract with NJPW.

One half of the Rockers, Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty should be close in the rankings but shockingly Jannetty was ranked at #57. By the end of 1991, the Rockers would be split up as Michaels literally tossed Jannetty through a plate glass window.

The Patriot was a breakout star for the promotion GWF, or the Global Wrestling Federation. Upon his arrival, the fan favorite won the GWF Television Championship on June 29th and within two months won the GWF Heavyweight Championship in August. Patriot would hold the Heavyweight Championship for the remainder of the year.

Bigelow had a successful 1991 working mainly in Japan and teaming with Vader, though the team wouldn’t win any gold until the following year.

The Diamond Stud. Does he look familiar?

76.) Diamond Stud
79.) Roddy Piper
107.) Chris Benoit
131.) Dustin Rhodes
171.) Shane Douglas

Kind of surprising that Stud would be ranked so high considering he lost quite a bit of steam when he lost to guys like Ron Simmons, Tom Zenk and was on the losing side of the Chambers of Horrors match at Halloween Havoc. Probably didn’t help that Rick Rude joined the company and had almost the same exact gimmick as Stud. A bigger year is in store for Stud in 1992 with a chance of scenery.

One of the biggest stars in the WWF had a busy 1991, but that wouldn’t be reflected by his ranking. He spent some of the year hurt due to his hip but helped Virgil in his feud with Ted DiBiase. More importantly, Piper was involved in a heated feud with Ric Flair upon his debut in the WWF that would continue on and off for the next seven years.

The young crippler Chris Benoit was under the radar to the mainstream fans as he was tearing it up overseas having classic matches with Jushin Liger in Japan. It would be a few years before Benoit made a splash in the States.

Dustin Rhodes had a great 1991 as he didn’t lose a match on pay per view or at a Clash of the Champions. Fought Steve Austin to a draw at Havoc for the WCW Television Championship but managed to win gold in November with Ricky Steamboat when they defeated the WCW World Tag Team Champions Arn Anderson and Larry Zbyszko. Dustin is one of the few guys who have a successful career and put on good matches like his father, Dusty.

Shane Douglas seemingly got his ranking based on what he had done previously to 1991. For the most part, the most impressive thing Douglas did was last nearly 27 minutes in the Royal Rumble.

Tazmaniac would go through a makeover over the years.

246.) Virgil
250.) Dean Malenko
253.) Lightning Kid
267.) Tazmaniac
367.) OZ

For a guy who won at WrestleMania against his former employer Ted DiBiase by count-out and then won the WWF Million Dollar Championship at SummerSlam, a ranking of 246 seems a bit too low for Virgil. Sure, he isn’t a spectacular wrestler, but considering Shane Douglas lasted all of 27 minutes in the Rumble and then vanished and got a ranking of 171, Virgil is made out to look like an All-Star in comparison. I’m pretty sure that’s the last time I’d ever say that about Virgil.

Who would have ever thought that Dean Malenko would be ranked lower than Virgil. Malenko, much like Benoit, found great success in Japan and wouldn’t venture over to the States for a few more years.

The highly entertaining Lightning Kid had a strong second year of competing by winning the GWF Lightweight Championship on two occasions and having several memorable matches with Jerry Lynn throughout the year.

Tazmaniac held the IWCCW Lightweight Championship for six months in 1991 and was one of the most hated men in the Northeast area.

The one of many gimmicks for Kevin Nash, OZ came in at 367. OZ was successful for a period of time before losing to Ron Simmons at the Great American Bash. The character wouldn’t make it to 1992.

GI Bro when Booker brought the gimmick back for a moment in 2000.

390.) GI Bro
392.) Jerry Lynn
403.) Chris Candido
409.) Brian Christopher
500.) Zeus

GI Bro would become better known as Booker T. In 1991 he worked for lesser known promotions but a short time into his career, he was beating veterans on a regular basis. It took him only eight weeks to make his television debut.

As noted before, Lynn was busy working in the GWF and putting on classic matches with the Lightning Kid. Lynn would win the GWF Lightweight Championship in December of 1991.

Candido had a good run with the USWA where he teamed with Eric Embry and faired well against veteran wrestlers. Another guy who would rise up the ranks throughout the years.

Brian Christopher was a top fan favorite for the USWA but would really break out in 1992.

I’m not aware of what Zeus did wrestling wise in 1991, but it’s a notable name to be ranked at number 500.

Did you disagree with any of the rankings for the PWI 500 in 1991? Who would have been your number one? Where would you have ranked the Undertaker had he not been forgotten by the writers when this was published?

Reliving a Feud – Issue #13: Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow

0

By 1995 the cartoonish nature of the World Wrestling Federation wasn’t producing a lot of memorable moments. So, in an attempt to spark up some interest the WWF looked outside the promotion to create a buzz.

At the Royal Rumble 1995 event, Bam Bam Bigelow and Tatanka wound up losing to the 1-2-3 Kid and Bob Holly in a tournament Finals match to crown new WWF World Tag Team Champions. It was specifically an embarrassing loss to the much larger, tougher, veteran Bigelow. After the match, Bam Bam was walking around ringside, still shaking off the humiliating loss, when he saw NFL Superstar Lawrence Taylor in the front row, laughing at Bigelow for losing the match to the Kid. Instead of walking away, Bigelow did the one thing he is probably most remembered for during his career, or at least during his WWF run. Bigelow shoved Taylor down in the front row. Taylor would immediately pop back up in a rage and lunge at Bigelow while being held back. This moment would become a major topic, not just on WWF television for the next three months, but all major media outlets.

Vince McMahon demanded that Bigelow issue an apology for his actions to LT on Raw, and Bigelow complied on the January 30th edition of RAW. However, the apology quickly turned into Bigelow saying he wish he shoved Taylor harder and shockingly Bammer would challenge LT to a match in the ring. The following week, LT’s lawyer made it clear that LT had no interest in getting in the ring with Bigelow and would seek legal advice if the taunts continued.

LT talked about the incident and challenge on the February 27th edition of RAW. Taylor revealed he would think about the match, but when Bigelow appeared via split screen and taunted the NFL star, LT accepted the match. It was made official, they would meet at WrestleMania XI. The two would have a major press conference a few days later where Taylor got inside Bigelow’s head by kissing him on the cheek. As the week’s progressed, it was revealed that Bam Bam Bigelow would have the remaining members of the Million Dollar Corporation at ringside for his support, while LT would grab a hrandful of NFL All-Stars to watch his back. One of those NFL All-Stars was none other than Steve “Mongo” McMichael.

Their showdown took place at WrestleMania XI in the main event. The decision to have them in the main event has always been a topic of discussion, but it may have been the right decision. After all, this match had drawn an insane amount of media and press for the event. Taylor would manage to win the match after over eleven minutes of action.

Following the event, Bigelow would fail Ted DiBiase once more after a loss to Diesel, as which point Bammer would be kicked out of the Million Dollar Corporation and turn face. He had been promised a babyface push, but that lasted for about two months before he was forgotten on the undercard and left the WWF in late ’95 (most people speculate this was the Kliq’s doing). This would also be Taylor’s only appearance in a WWF ring, though he had been rumored to compete in a tag team match with Bigelow at SummerSlam, but that never happened.

Bob’s Opinion:
1995 is considered a rough year for the World Wrestling Federation as they had a lot of goofy characters and lacked the star power that they had a handful of years prior. The decision to bring in Lawrence Taylor to feud with Bigelow isn’t an awful one. To his credit, Taylor took the role seriously and the promotion for the match was done nicely, I thought.

Their match at WrestleMania XI could have been a lot worse but they were able to put together a decent enough match that wasn’t offensive. Bigelow being promised a babyface push only to have that taken back is unfortunate.

The possibility of a tag match involving Taylor at SummerSlam would have been interesting as well. Two guys who had a feud turn around and team with each other. I’m not sure who they would have fought against. I’d assume two guys from the Corporation like Sid and Tatanka or something along those lines.

Their feud produced a lot of media hype and brought attention to the company when they really needed it. When you think about it, the usage of LT really brought forward more use of athletes in wrestling. World Championship Wrestling really took the idea and ran with it in 1996 and throughout the rest of it’s existence. They would hire Steve McMichael and use guys like Reggie White and Kevin Greene.

The feud probably wasn’t main event level as the Michaels/Diesel feud had been going on for around six months only to take a backseat to a one shot deal. In a wrestling sense, it was probably a better idea to put Michaels and Diesel on last especially considering they had a good match on a rather poor show. I’d give the feud between LT and Bigelow a mild thumbs up, though the feud effectively killed Bigelow’s WWF career.

What are your thoughts or memories of the feud between Bam-Bam Bigelow and Lawrence Taylor? Leave your thoughts below!
