Fighting Spirit Review: DDT New Year’s Gift Special 2015

0

Date:  January 3rd, 2015
Location:  Tokyo Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance:  2,200

Part of me feels bad for reviewing DDT.  I am not their target audience, I don’t understand 57% of the jokes, and most of their matches are just pure gimmick.  But they do occasionally get a laugh out of me and they do have a few really good wrestlers, so I watch it anyway since you never know.  Plus I try not to skip any promotions.  This event has the Michael Nakazawa Army vs. the Danshoku Dino Army in a points-based match series.   Here is the very full card:

– Kota Umeda vs. Shunma Katsumata
– Shuji Ishikawa, Makoto Oishi, and Hoshitango vs. Yasu Urano, Akito, and Gota Ihashi
Iron Man Heavy Metal Championship: YOSHIHIKO (c), Antonio Honda, and Takao Soma vs. Masa Takanashi, DJ Nira, and Saki Akai
– Sanshiro Takagi and Toru Owashi vs. Super Sasadango Machine and Super Sasadango Machine #2
KO-D Six Man Tag Team Championship: Brahman Shu, Brahman Kei, and Gorgeous Matsuno vs. Kota Ibushi, Daisuke Sasaki, and Shun Miyatake
Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series: Konosuke Takeshita vs. Tomomitsu Matsunaga
Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series: Yukio Sakaguchi vs. Kazuki Hirata
Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series: KUDO vs. MIKAMI
Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series: HARASHIMA vs. Tetsuya Endo
Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series: Michael Nakazawa vs. Shigehiro Irie
– Bonus Track: Michael Nakazawa Army vs. Danshoku Dino Army

Let’s see how this goes.

Kota Umeda vs. Shunma Katsumata
They trade shoulderblocks and armdrags to start things off, as Umeda stays in control until Katsumata plants him with a dropkick. Trio of slams by Katsumata but the cover gets two.  Katsumata applies a single leg crab hold but Umeda gets to the ropes.  Handspring kick to the face by Umeda and he knees Katsumata in the corner.  Swandive missile dropkick by Umeda and he covers Katsumata for two.  Back up they trade elbows but Katsumata catches a kick and hits a powerbomb.  Crab hold by Katsumata and Umeda submits, making Shunma Katsumata your winner.  Basic rookie opener, Umeda does have some pretty moves though.  Really short too.  Score:  3.0

Shuji Ishikawa, Makoto Oishi, and Hoshitango vs. Yasu Urano, Akito, and Gota Ihashi
Oishi and Ihashi start off things.  Ihashi is really fat.  Just saying.  Ihashi tags in Akito before anything happens and he trades moves with Oishi.  Urano is tagged in as Ishikawa is as well, Ishikawa shoulderblocks Urano and tags in Hoshitango.  Hoshitango slams Urano around and tags in Oishi.  Oishi hits a fist drop and tags in Ishikawa.  Urano fights back but Ishikawa hits a back bodydrop for a two count cover.  Hoshitango and Oishi come in the ring and everyone brutalizes Urano.  Akito and Ihashi come in to help but they are cleared out, Hoshitango goes for a suplex but Urano blocks it.  Ishikawa comes in but Urano fights them off and tags in Akito.  Dragon screw by Akito to Hoshitango and he suplexes Ishikawa.  He goes off the ropes but Hoshitango throws him to the mat and tags in Oishi.  Tornado DDT by Oishi to Akito, roll-up by Oishi but it gets two.  German suplex by Akito and he leaves the ring, Oishi tags in Ishikawa and Ishikawa hits a vertical suplex onto Ihashi.  Running knee by Ishikawa but it gets a two count.  Ishikawa clears the ring, kicks by Ihashi but Ishikawa headbutts him and hits Splash Mountain for the three count.  Shuji Ishikawa and company win the match.  I’ll give Ishikawa credit for having hit the Splash Mountain on tons of fun, but Ihashi was never tagged in the match that in theory had tag rules.  And some of these wrestlers aren’t very good.  Nice finish though.  Score:  3.5

Antonio Honda, Takao Soma, and YOSHIHIKO (c) vs. Masa Takanashi, DJ Nira, and Saki Akai
This match is for the Iron Man Heavy Metal Championship.  That is a singles title so why it is in a six man tag match, I am not sure, but whomever pins YOSHIHIKO wins the championship.    Soma and Takanashi start off, Soma gets the better of it and tags in YOSHIHIKO.  I am going to pretend with the play by play that YOSHIHIKO isn’t a doll.  Takanashi slams YOSHIHIKO and tags in Nira.  Nira throws YOSHIHIKO out of the ring and tags in Akai, Takanashi covers YOSHIHIKO but it is broken up.  Takanashi sets up YOSHIHIKO in the corner but Soma helps YOSHIHIKO kick Takanashi and YOSHIHIKO hits a crossbody.  Takanashi tags in Honda, Akai runs in the ring but Honda won’t hit her.  Kicks by Akai, Irish whip, reversed, and Honda hits a Thesz Press.  Nira gets in the ring, Honda kicks him and dances around but Nira wraps his wrists in toilet paper and kicks him in the leg.  Akai comes in with Soma and Soma tags in YOSHIHIKO.  Kick by YOSHIHIKO and a cover, but Takanashi breaks it up.  YOSHIHIKO dives off the top turnbuckle but Akai moves.  Akai goes up top and hits a diving crossbody on YOSHIHIKO, but it gets two.  Akai goes for a powerbomb but YOSHIHIKO reverses it into a hurricanrana, but Akai rolls through and picks up the three count!  Your winner and new champion:  Saki Akai!  BUT WAIT!  Aja Kong appears out of nowhere, destroys everyone, and hits a brainbuster on Akai.  Cover, and she picks up the three count!  Aja Kong is your new champion.  As for the match, YOSHIHIKO makes me laugh.  There, I said it, I am entertained by a blowup doll that participates in wrestling matches.  And seeing Kong was cool.  Score:  6.0

Sanshiro Takagi and Toru Owashi vs. Super Sasadango Machine and Super Sasadango Machine #2
Owashi and Machine #2 start things off.  Owashi takes off Machine #2’s boxing gloves but Machine #2 kicks Owashi in the chest.  Takagi and Sasadango Machine are tagged in and Takagi chops Sasadango Machine in the throat.  Sasadango Machine is attacked in the corner but Owashi goes for Sasadango Machine’s mask.  Owashi tags in Takagi, and Takagi twists Sasadango Machine’s straps around his neck so that it chokes him.  Owashi comes back in and clubs Sasadango Machine, but Sasadango Machine eventually hits a dropkick and tags in Machine #2.  Diving doublechops by Machine #2 and he clears the ring.  Takagi rams Machine #2 into the turnbuckles and suplexes him back into the ring.  Sasadango Machine gets in the ring and rips at Takagi’s nose hair.  Takagi low blows Machine #2, Takagi takes off Machine #2’s mask, but Sasadango Machine takes off his mask and puts it onto Machine #2.  Sasadango Machine hits a lariat on Owashi and Takagi and hits an elevated DDT on Takagi, but Takagi kicks out.  La Magistral by Takagi and he gets a three count.  Your winners are Takagi and Owashi.  Machine #2 is Bernard Ackah, for those that care.  This wasn’t a good match by any stretch of the imagination, although the mask swap spot was cute.  Score:  3.0

(c) Brahman Shu, Brahman Kei, and Gorgeous Matsuno vs. Kota Ibushi, Daisuke Sasaki, and Shun Miyatake
This match is for the KO-D Six Man Tag Team Championship.  They all brawl to start the match, the Brahmans try to dump water on their opponents but the buckets are taken from them.  They brawl outside the ring again, fighting up into the crowd and down the aisle.  Miyatake chops Kei up the aisle, Ibushi grabs his arm and walks down all the chairs to ringside, until Kei trips him and Ibushi crotches the guardrail.  Miyatake and Matsuno are trading elbows elsewhere while Shu and Ibushi get into the ring.  Kei and Miyatake get onto carts and are rammed into each other, which doesn’t go well for either one of them.  Kei hits Miyatake with a stop sign, Kei gets a pig head and hits Miyatake with it.  Bowling ball to Miyatake, cover by Kei but it gets a two count.  Miyatake eventually tags in Ibushi but Shu attacks him from the apron.  Double Pele Kick by Ibushi, cover by Sasaki but it gets two.  Sasaki and Ibushi get the luggage and bowling ball, and Ibushi does a moonsault while holding the bowling ball onto Shu.  Cover but Kei breaks it up.  Matsuno stays in the ring and kicks Ibushi, Ibushi goes for a slow motion powerbomb but Matsuno reverses it with a hurricanrana.  Ibushi and Sasaki get some black goo and try to spit it at Shu and Kei initially block it until Miyatake helps out, leading to Shu and Kei getting sprayed.  Miyatake starts making… something with powder and water, black liquid is added and the jar is shaken up.  Miyatake drinks some and powers up, Matsuno hits him but Miyatake absorbs the blows.  Shoulder tackle by Miyatake, Ibushi and Sasaki try to spit black liquid at Matsuno but Matsuno ducks and they hit Miyatake by accident.  Schoolboy by Matsuno to Miyatake and he gets the three count!  The Brahmans and Gorgeous Matsuno retain the championships.  This was goofy fun like you’d expect, the brawling was just way too slow.   Some funny spots but it had too much mindless brawling before they got to the point.  Score:  4.0

Konosuke Takeshita vs. Tomomitsu Matsunaga
This match is part of the Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series.  Standard trading holds to start things off until Takeshita connects with a jumping kick, Takeshita goes for a pescado but Matsunaga moves and slams Takeshita onto the floor. They battle on the apron and Matsunaga hits a backdrop suplex.  Double stomp off the apron by Matsunaga to Takeshita’s back, as this match is far more brutal than I was expecting from a silly DDT match series.  Back in, Matsunaga applies a crab hold but Takeshita fights back.  Single arm suplex by Takeshita but he hurts his own back.  Matsunaga slams Takeshita onto his knee, small packages by Matsunaga but he gets two.  Roaring lariat by Takeshita and he hits a German suplex hold for the three count.  Konosuke Takeshita wins!  For a short match they packed a lot into it, some really nice spots here and some looked quite painful.  A solid short encounter.  Score:  6.0

Yukio Sakaguchi vs. Kazuki Hirata
This match is part of the Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series.  Sakaguchi interrupts Hirata’s dancing, he gets mad and hits Sakaguchi.  They trade strikes, which Sakaguchi obviously gets the better of as Hirata eventually tumbles out of the ring.  Jumping kick by Sakaguchi off the apron, they return to the ring and Sakaguchi kicks Hirata to the mat again.  Knee by Sakaguchi but Hirata snaps off a vertical suplex.  Face crusher by Hirata but Sakaguchi punches him in the stomach.  Running chop by Hirata but Sakaguchi kicks Hirata in the corner before hitting a jumping knee.  Sakaguchi straddles Hirata in the corner and knees him in the stomach.  Sleeper by Sakaguchi, he releases Hirata and hits a PK to pick up the three count.  Yukio Sakaguchi wins the match.  This was a lopsided affair, to put it mildly, Sakaguchi was never in any danger here.  Liked the apron jumping kick, livened things up a little bit, but still really short and no suspense.  Score:  3.5

KUDO vs. MIKAMI
This match is part of the Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series.  MIKAMI hits a swandive missile dropkick before the match starts and then hits a pescado.  MIKAMI gets a ladder and slides it and KUDO back in the ring.  MIKAMI puts the ladder on KUDO and hits a swandive dropkick, sending the ladder into MIKAMI.  MIKAMI puts the ladder on KUDO and hits a senton off the top turnbuckle.  KUDO kicks MIKAMI back but MIKAMI hits a backflip off the ladder for two.  They trade strikes until KUDO throws MIKAMI into the ladder.  Lariat by KUDO and he hits a diving knee strike to a standing MIKAMI.  MIKAMI kicks KUDO in the face, knee by KUDO and he hits a swandive double kneedrop for a two count.  Tiger Feint Kick by MIKAMI and he hits the 450 Splash.  MIKAMI sets up a ladder and climbs up it, but KUDO does too.  MIKAMI knocks KUDO off the ladder but KUDO avoids the senton from the top of the ladder.  KUDO kicks the ladder into MIKAMI’s back, high kick by KUDO and he hits a diving double kneedrop for the three count.  KUDO is victorious.  For a match less than five minutes long they fit a whole lot into it.  Big spots from the ladder and MIKAMI can still go.  Fun for what it was, just not long enough.  Score:  6.5

HARASHIMA vs. Tetsuya Endo
This match is part of the Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series.  Endo immediately dropkicks HARASHIMA to start the match and dropkicks him again.  HARASHIMA gains the advantage with a knee to the gut followed by a kick to the back of the head.  HARASHIMA doublestomps Endo repeatedly and applies a chinlock and pulls back on Endo’s back until Endo gets in the ropes.  Endo fights back with a vertical suplex and kicks HARASHIMA.  Endo kicks HARASHIMA off the apron and he hits a corkscrew Asai Moonsault.  These guys really are going all out in these short little matches.  Swandive lariat by Endo but it gets two.  HARASHIMA gets back into it with a swandive doublestomp.  Endo wiggles away and hits a standing shooting star press for two.  They trade elbows, kicks by HARASHIMA but Endo kicks him back.  Torture Rack Bomb by Endo but it gets two.  HARASHIMA moves when Endo goes for a diving move, Endo avoids HARASHIMA’s first charge but HARASHIMA kicks Endo in the head and hits the Somato for three.  Another really good but short match, all these series matches have been serious and entertaining, just wish they weren’t all around five minutes.  Score:  7.0

Michael Nakazawa vs. Shigehiro Irie
This match is part of the Dino Army vs. Michael Army 5 Singles Match Series.  Lots of elbows by Irie to start things off, Nakazawa drives Irie back but Irie hits a vertical suplex.  Nakazawa avoids the leg drop by rolling out of the ring, Irie goes out after him and Nakazawa tapes up Irie’s face.  Nakazawa tapes Irie to the post but Irie breaks free and gets back in, and Nakazawa hits a diving shoulderblock off the top for a two count.  Piledriver by Irie, quick body press but it gets two.  Body avalanche by Irie but Nakazawa chops Irie in the chest.  Nakazawa takes off his underwear and uses it as a claw hold, getting a two.  Nakazawa then applies a sleeper with his underwear as an aide but Irie rolls into the ropes.  Elbow by Nakazawa but Irie hits a swinging side slam for two.  Diving body press by Irie, but Nakazawa kicks out.  They trade elbows and then headbutts, lariat by Irie but he only gets two.  Hadoken to the chest by Nakazawa, Irie grabs Nakazawa but the bell rings, as time has expired.  Match is a Draw!  Nakazawa is a bit goofy but Irie is solid.  A step down from the last few matches even though it got more time, but still had its entertaining moments.  Score:  5.5

Michael Nakazawa Army vs. Danshoku Dino Army
Even in my full play by play days, I didn’t try to do it for this match as there were 34 wrestlers in an eight minute match.  Suffice to say there was carnage everywhere, wrestlers were fighting both in the ring and out of the ring.  Let’s fast forward to the last few minutes, as Nakazawa is being attacked by literally everyone in the corner.  Iii punches Nakazawa down and javelins him into the corner.  Honda comes in the ring, he covers Nakazawa but Nakazawa quickly kicks out.  Honda punches Nakazawa as by now all the wrestlers are just watching at ringside.  Nakazawa takes off his underwear but Honda punches it back into his face and hits a lariat.  Honda goes up to the top turnbuckle but Nakazawa gets his foot up when he jumps off.  Nakazawa wraps his underwear around his hand and he nails the Ultimate Venom Maker for the three count.  Your winner of the series is the Michael Nakazawa Army! If you like random action everywhere this may be for you, and it was a fitting end to the series.  But as a match, not a lot to it, not enough time for a match of this magnitude.  Score:  3.5

Final Thoughts:

I wish things were reversed.  The silly matches got all the time, and the matches with really solid wrestlers got around five minutes each.  The comedy matches did get a chuckle out of me from time to time, but the laughs to match time ratio was not ideal.  The match series did redeem things a bit for me as across that 30 minutes of action there was some really good stuff, so it was not a total loss, but still not the type of event I could personally really recommend.

Announced Attendance:  325

The first BJW event of the year!  Well that I could find at the moment, there was an event prior that I am sure I will review at some point.  This event has a variety of plunder matches, including ladders, barbed wire boards, iron cages, and of course lighttubes.  Here is the full card:

– Isamu Oshita and Kota Sekifuda vs. Shinobu and Toshiyuki Sakuta
– Brahman Kei, Brahman Shu, and Atsushi vs. Senga, MEN’s Teioh, and Oosugi
– Daisuke Sekimoto and Kamitani vs. Ryuichi Kawakami and Atsushi Maruyama
– Kazuki Hashimoto vs. Yuji Okabayashi
Barbed Wire Board Death Match:  Abdullah Kobayashi, Takahashi, and SAGAT vs. Jaki Numazawa, Masashi Takeda, and Takumi Tsukamoto
Ladder and Iron Cage Death Match: Kodaka and Miyamoto vs. Hoshino and Masato Inaba
Fluorescent Lighttubes Death Match: Ryuji Ito vs. Takayuki Ueki

A new year, a new beginning.  Let’s get started.

Isamu Oshita and Kota Sekifuda vs. Shinobu and Toshiyuki Sakuta
Oshita and Shinobu start things off.  They trade submissions to start things off but end up back on their feet.  Oshita wrenches down on Shinobu and tags in Sekifuda, but Shinobu trips Sekifuda and tags in Sakuta.  Sakuta and Sekifuda roll around a bit until Sakuta gives Sekifuda a hard elbow.  Sakuta does a fancy armdrag out of the corner and tags in Shinobu.  Shinobu stomps down Sekifuda and gives him a standing dropkick.  Sakuta comes back in and wins a strike battle with Sekifuda, slapping on a camel clutch.  Slam by Sakuta and he gets a two count cover on Sekifuda.  Sakuta tags Shinobu back in and he puts Sekifuda in a crab, Shinobu charges Sekifuda but Sekifuda kicks him back.  Dropkick by Sekifuda and he tags in Oshita.  Jumping elbow by Oshita and he covers Shinobu for two.  Shinobu gets away and tags in Sakuta and he hits a pair of shoulder tackles.  Belly to belly suplex and it gets two.  Sakuta dropkicks Oshita and hits a standing moonsault for two.  Strike exchange by Sakuta and Oshita, dropkick by Oshita and he tags in Sekifuda while Sakuta tags in Shinobu.  Bridging suplex by Sekifuda but it gets two.  Missile dropkick by Sekifuda and a cover, but Sakuta breaks it up.  Lariat by Shinobu, he goes up to the top turnbuckle and he hits a missile dropkick for the three count pinfall.  Standard intro match, nothing bad but nothing really interesting either.  Score:  4.0

Brahman Kei, Brahman Shu, and Atsushi vs. Hercules Senga, MEN’s Teioh, and Oosugi
I am one of four Americans that knows the difference between Kei and Shu.  I’m special.  Senga and Atsushi are the first two in the ring, and Atsushi has a brush he uses to beat Senga with before dropkicking him.  30 seconds in and I already don’t  understand what is going on.  They all go outside of the ring to brawl but Shu and Oosugi get back in the ring.  Shu gets a bottle and sprays it into Oosugi’s eyes.  Shu throws a jacket at Oosugi but Oosugi blocks the water spit twice.  He blocks it a third time but Shu whacks him with the battle.  Kei comes in too and they both attack Oosugi in the corner, including the bowling ball spot.  Atsushi is tagged in and he chops Oosugi into the corner, Irish whip, but Oosugi moves and hits an enzigieri.  Oosugi tags in both Miyamoto and Senga, and they clear the ring before double teaming the Brahmans.  They then toy with Atsushi for a bit until he gets a weapon and gets the upper hand.  Atsushi grabs Teioh but Teioh ducks when Shu and Kei go for the mustard and ketchup attack.  Teioh hits a chokeslam on Atsushi and gets the three count.  Your winners are Hercules Senga, MEN’s Teioh, and Oosugi. This match really slowed down significantly at the end with all the shenanigans, and this isn’t my style of match in the first place.  Even on the “Brahmans Scale” this wasn’t a good one.  Score:  2.5

Kazuki Hashimoto vs. Yuji Okabayashi
They nicely shake hands to start the match, then they trade wristlocks and hammerlocks amongst other things.  They then trade strikes for a few minutes, with Hashimoto finally kicking Okabayashi down in the corner.  Jumping kick by Hashimoto in the corner and he hits a pair of running boots to the face.  PK by Hashimoto but it gets a two count.  Hashimoto foolishly goes for a fisherman buster but Okabayashi blocks it and hits a powerslam.  Vertical suplex by Okabayashi and he applies a crab hold, but Hashimoto gets to the ropes.   Lariat by Okabayashi in the corner and he hits a scoop slam, Okabayashi goes up to the top turnbuckle but Hashimoto is up and kicks him.  Hashimoto joins Okabayashi up top, they accidentally struggle until Hashimoto manages to hit a superplex.  Back up they trade strikes again until Okabayashi levels Hashimoto with a lariat for a two count.  Another lariat by Okabayashi and he nails the powerbomb for the three count.  Your winner is Yuji Okabayashi.  This match started really slow as the first half of the match was just trading submissions or strikes.  Once they got cooking it was good, the match just wasn’t long enough for them to really get into a groove.  Score:  6.0

Daisuke Sekimoto and Kamitani vs. Ryuichi Kawakami and Atsushi Maruyama
Kamitani and Maruyama start things off.  They trade submission holds and Maruyama tags in Kawakami.  They trade wristlocks and Kamitani tags in Sekimoto.  They trade holds too until Kawakami hits a shoulderblock, which makes Sekimoto mad. Sekimoto returns the favor before he tags Kamitani back in.  Kawakami gets Kamitani in the corner and tags in Maruyama.  Maruyama and Kamitani trade chops, Kamitani gets the better of it and tags in Sekimoto.  Sekimoto puts Maruyama in a choke but Kawakami breaks it up.  Sekimoto tags in Kamitani, Kamitani punches Maruyama in the corner but Maruyama kicks Kamitani in the head.  Maruyama tags in Kawakami and he trades elbows with Kamitani.  Kawakami elbows Kamitani down in the corner and stomps on him.  Kamitani fights back and hits a shoulderblock before tagging in Sekimoto.  Kawakami charges Sekimoto but Sekimoto catches him and hits a side slam.  Scorpion Deathlock by Sekimoto but Maruyama quickly breaks it up.  Sekimoto and Kawakami trade elbows, Kawakami gets the better of it and tags in Maruyama.  Jumping kick by Maruyama in the corner and he hits a thrust kick followed by a missile dropkick.  Dropkick by Maruyama but Sekimoto puts him in the Argentine Backbreaker.  Kawakami comes in to help but Kamitani does as well.  Sekimoto and Kamitani hit a vertical suplex on Maruyama.  Maruyama gets the advantage back and puts Sekimoto in a cross armbreaker but Sekimoto powerbombs out of it.  Lariat by Sekimoto and a cover, but it gets two.  German suplex hold by Sekimoto and he gets the three, making Daisuke Sekimoto and Kamitani the winners. A solid midcard tag match, Kawakami and Sekimoto looked really good and the other two didn’t bring the match down.  Score:  6.0

Abdullah Kobayashi, Takahashi, and SAGAT vs. Jaki Numazawa, Takeda, and Tsukamoto
This is a Barbed Wire Board Death Match.   So there are barbed wire boards in two corners and they have barbed wire bats and chairs with them also.  Amongst other things.  Takahashi starts off with the bat while Takeda has a crown of barbed wire.  Takeda throws the crown at Takahashi, shoulderblock by Takahashi and he clears the ring as everyone brawls outside.  Numazawa and Takeda get back in the ring and throw SAGAT into the barbed wire board, breaking it in half.  Takeda abuses SAGAT with a piece of barbed wire, he throws a chair at SAGAT while he is under the board before tagging in Tsukamoto.  SAGAT seems stuck so Tsukamoto helps by stapling his head.  Tsukamoto tags in Numazawa and he abuses SAGAT as well, hitting him with the barbed wire crown before tagging Takeda back in.  Takeda gets the barbed wire bat and hits SAGAT with it, he then painfully rakes it over SAGAT’s back.  Takeda and Tsukamoto get in the ring too and Numazawa they take turns throwing each other onto SAGAT.  Numazawa puts the board on top of SAGAT and slams Takeda onto him.  Tsukamoto props the other barbed wire board in the corner but SAGAT finally fights back and tosses Tsukamoto into the barbed wire board.  SAGAT tags in Takahashi and he beats up everyone.  Takahashi puts the barbed wire chair onto Tsukamoto and hits a senton off the second turnbuckle for a two count.  Tsukamoto slaps and kicks Takahashi, he then gets a ball of barbed wire but Takahashi takes it and runs it across Tsukamoto’s back.  Side Russian leg sweep by Tsukamoto and he tags in Takeda.

Takeda knees Takahashi in the corner, he gets a piece of barbed wire board and puts it onto Takahashi before hitting another running knee.  Cover, but it gets a two.  Takahashi and Takeda trade elbows by Takeda hits a spear (although he landed in the barbed wire, not Takahashi), Takahashi judo throws Takeda into the board and tags in Kobayashi.  Kobayashi comes in with a barbed wire crown but Takeda kicks him, lariat by Kobayashi and he hits an elbow drop for a two count.  Kobayashi hits a Shining Wizard and gets a piece of barbed wire board, but Takeda dropkicks it into him and tags in Numazawa.  SAGAT is also tagged in, and he trades strikes with Numazawa.  Numazawa and Tsukamoto come in to help Numazawa and they triple team poor SAGAT.  Kobayashi is totally coasting in this match, he looks fatter than I remember, I guess he is in the twilight of his career.  Numazawa goes up top with SAGAT but Takahashi comes up from behind and powerbombs Numazawa.  Kobayashi comes in to help as SAGAT hits a double spear on Takahashi and Tsukamoto.  SAGAT gets a piece of board and puts it onto Numazawa, he then hits a jumping senton.  Cover, but it gets two.  Death valley bomb by SAGAT but the pin is broken up.  Numazawa regains the advantage and hits the over the shoulder piledriver but it is broken up.  Takeda takes care of Takahashi, then everyone kicks SAGAT before Numazawa hits a swinging neckbreaker.  Numazawa sets up a board and hits his Zettai Zetsumei DDT for the three count.  Numazawa and company are the winners.  I liked the ‘different’ stipulation, not that barbed wire boards are new but they are more fun to watch then just lighttubes.  Felt bad for SAGAT, he definitely got the worst of everything.  But they got time, made the spots as unique as they could, and it was a pretty entertaining match.  Score:  6.5

Isami Kodaka and Yuko Miyamoto vs. Kankuro Hoshino and Masato Inaba
This is a Ladder and Iron Cage Death Match. The match starts with two people locked in the little cage together, which is completely ridiculous as there is barely room for them both to stand so they just do short range punches or nothing at all.  Kodaka and Inaba start in the cage together while Miyamoto battles Hoshino outside of it.  They both do… minor submission trading, although at times Kodaka and Inaba just watch.  Hoshino dumps Miyamoto out of the ring and battles with him on the floor.  They return after a bit and Miyamoto throws Hoshino into the ladder.  He then rams Hoshino into the side of the cage and drops the ladder onto Hoshino’s hand.  Yes Kodaka and Inaba are still watching from the cage, which I still find extremely silly.  Hoshino slams Miyamoto onto the ladder, small package by Miyamoto but it gets two.  Miyamoto tries to pin Hoshino a few more times with no luck.  Miyamoto hits a belly to belly suplex, and the referee unlocks the cage as Kodaka rides Inaba out of it.  Miyamoto and Kodaka double team Inaba in the corner but Hoshino comes back in the ring to battle Miyamoto.  Stretch hold by Miyamoto as Kodaka returns and they kick Hoshino.  Hoshino fights them off and hits a double spear. He sets up the ladder, and hits Miyamoto and Kodaka with it.  Hoshino and Inaba ram Kodaka and Miyamoto into the cage, and then Miyamoto is locked into the cage.  Kodaka is double teamed but he reverses a double chokeslam and kicks them both to the mat.  He gets the key from Inaba and lets Miyamoto out, Miyamoto lariats Hoshino, Kodaka gets the ladder and runs at Hoshino but Hoshino ducks.  Miyamoto walks up and kicks Hoshino into the cage, locking him in it.  Scoop slam by Miyamoto to Inaba and he hits a senton off the top turnbuckle.  Kodaka goes to the top of the cage and hits a diving double knee  drop, and Kodaka picks up the three count.  Isami Kodaka and Yuko Miyamoto are your winners.  I found the gimmick really silly and it took me out of the match a bit, the cage should be a weapon, not have wrestlers randomly locked in it.  Just a short nothing match with one good spot at the end, Kodaka will have no knees pretty soon.  Score:  3.5

Ryuji Ito vs. Takayuki Ueki
This match is a Fluorescent Lighttubes Death Match.  My favorite!  Sarcasm!  They try to shove each other into tubes but have no success.   Ito puts a few tubes in the ring and takes Ueki down on them.  Ito then throws Ueki into all the ropes, breaking more tubes.  Ito throws Ueki out of the ring and beats him around ringside.  They get back in and Ito hits Ueki with a chair.  Scoop slam onto the chair but Ueki blocks a shot and headbutts the chair into Ito.  Chair shot by Ueki but Ito whips Ueki into the lighttubes.   More lighttube violence by Ito as Ueki is bleeding everywhere and they trade elbows.  Hard elbow by Ito and he hits a scoop slam.  Ito goes up top and hits a moonsault, cover, but Ueki doesn’t really kick out.  Ito elbows Ueki to the mat again, Ueki gets up, Ito tells the referee to check him and she stops the match.  Your winner is Ryuji Ito.   I just find these matches really repetitive as there isn’t much different you can do.  A few minutes of trying to throw your opponent into tubes, someone succeeds, they beat each other with them, then use one to finish their opponent somehow.  Only difference here is I think Ueki got legit knocked loopy, leading to an early stoppage.  It is just limiting since they have to use the tubes since they are everywhere.  I guess good for this style but having the lighttubes around is more of a handicap then a match elevator.  Score:  4.5

Final Thoughts:

Not a good way to start my Big Japan viewing for 2015.  I liked that the match stipulations were different, not just all lighttubes, but the only match that really amused me was the barbed wire board match.  The finale ended before they planned I think which hurt it, and the cage match was just too stupid, it would work better in DDT.  Recommended to stay away from this event and wait for Big Japan to put together something better.

The show opens with the Extreme Horsemen coming down to ringside with a four man in a mask. We hear on commentary a familiar voice that is not Joey Styles but Kevin Kelly. Champion Steve Corino lets us know that Jerry “The King” Lawler was pulled from the show by the WWE. Corino hypes MLW and talks about pro wrestling over sports entertainment. The crowd cheers, kind of not what he should be going for. He gets the crowd to turn back on him by shit talking their opponents for tonight. Simon Diamond says they needed someone who was just as sick of being passed over as they were. They went out and got the guy who is “just not the coolest, just not the best”… The man unmasks and its Justin Credible, I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be exciting or not. Credible says “they got the guy who is the most extreme ass kicking son of a bitch in MLW. They got PJ Walker”. So I guess Vince owns the name. Corino says he has another surprise and calls out the “original extreme Horsemen Barry Windham”. Now that’s an exciting surprise!

Los Maximos vs. Super Dragon & Juventud Guerrera
So our first match and our first no show as this was supposed to be Los Maximos and Mexico’s Most Wanted. Kevin Kelly is very awful. Dragon starts with Jose. The over under on blown spots is 7. I’ll take the over. After some arm drag spots takes in. Juvi hits a bulldog. Joel comes in and hits a rana. Headscissor by Juvi on Joel. Juvi hits a cool spot where he flips round on the apron using both rights that are set up for War Games and finishes it with a rana. Juvi tags Dragon. Jose reverses an irish whip and hits a spin kick and tags. Dragon sent into a corner and Joel follows with an elbow and northern lights for 2. All four men come in and they do the boston crab camel clutch combo. Dragon fights back and makes the tag. Juvi comes in with a snap suplex on Jose and then a pump handle into an x-factor, that was pretty cool looking. Peoples elbow for 2. A juvi driver is reversed into a small package for 2. Jose up and gets a belly to back suplex both men tag. Joel comes in with a second rope dropkick to Dragon. Joel pulls Juvy into the ring and hits a powerslam but Dragon pulls him off and hits a dragon suplex for 2. Dragon goes up top but he gets cut off. Jose goes for a super rana but it’s blocked. Joel runs up the buckle but slips and pulls everyone off the turnbuckle. Juvi comes into the ring with a dropkick and hits a driver on Jose. One on Joel and Juvi goes up top for the 450. Jose knocks him down and out of the ring. Joel hits a German on Dragon for 2. And then hits a rolling cradle for 3 in 8.39. Yet another Maximos match where everything was a jumbled mess, I hate them.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament RD 1: Tony Mamaluke vs. Sonjay Dutt
Nice fast paced start to the match. Dutt ends up on the apron and ranas Tony to the floor. On the floor Mamaluke takes out the knee of Dutt. Mamaluke goes up top and hits a somersault senton to the floor! In the ring Mamaluke goes after the knee of Dutt and goes for a submission win. Mamaluke all about the submissions in this match. He goes for a tornado DDT but gets countered and placed back on the turnbuckle. Muscle buster by Dutt and he goes up top and hits the Himalayan press for the victory after 3.58. Way to short to really be anything.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament RD 1: Eddie Colon vs. “Evil F’N Show” Jerry Lynn
No Sinister Minister with Lynn, hope that doesn’t mean he’s gone. Colon out quicks Lynn for the first few minutes of the match but Lynn is able to throw him to the floor to take over at the 3 minute mark. Colon sent into the ring post. Back in the ring a chop right is won by Eddie. Colon hits a drop kick in the corner and then charges again but Lynn ties him up in the tree of woe. Lynn with a drop kick to his face for 2. Tilt a whirl back breaker for 2. Colon comes back and with a reverse DDT and both men are down. Colon up first and he fires away at Lynn. Colon with a big back body drop and neck breaker for 2. Victory roll for 2. Lynn hits a tiger bomb for 2. TKO for 2. Lynn can’t put away Colon. Lynn goes for a cradle piledriver but gets tripped up and Colon slingshots him into the corner. Eddie goes up top and hits a corkscrew body block for the win in 9.08 to advance in the tournament.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament RD 1: Jimmy Yang vs. Juventud Guerrera
Juvi out pretty quickly after his last match. Not really a good idea to enter a tournament and have a non-tournament match before hand. Their pants look almost identical. Juvi with a head scissor and Yang goes to the floor. Juvi with a plancha to the floor. Yang fights back in the ring. After some back and forth reversals Juvi hits a spin kick. Kevin Kelly tells us that Jerry Lynn and Mikey Whipwreck attacked Eddie Colon backstage. Yang with a drop kick and then a cobra clutch. Juvi with a DDT for 2. Dominator by Juvi but Yang is able to kick out. They do a back and forth pin attempt spot with about ten 2 counts. Both men hit clotheslines and they are down. Juvi goes for a reverse suplex but Yang flips out of it. Juvi with a juvi driver and then he goes for the 450. Yang moves but Juvi lands on his feet. Yang goes for a German but Juvi lands on his feet. Juvi hits a SICK driver and gets 2.9! That should have killed him. Juvi comes off the second but Yang drop kicks him and hits yang time for the win in 10.38. Last two matches were pretty boring. Yang gets his second straight win after not really doing much during the match.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament RD 1: Super Dragon vs. “Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels
Some arm drags and head scissors start us off. Daniels goes to the floor to get a break and Dragon dives through the ropes onto him. Back in the ring Dragon stomps on Daniels chest. Daniels comes back with a neck breaker. I can’t stress how awful Kevin Kelly is on commentary. Daniels takes over for the next few minutes. He hits a snap suplex and leg drop for 2. Daniels goes up top but Dragon pulls him to the mat. Both men are down but Dragon gets up first. Dragon attacks the arm in locks in an arm bar. Daniels gets to the ropes and then is sent into a corner. Dragon charges but Daniels catches his coming in with an STO. Dragon with the go behind but Daniels kicks him low. Last rites and a 3 count in 9.17. Ehh you know people always rave about how awesome Daniels is. Watching all the MLW stuff is my first time really watching him on a consistent basis and I gotta say I am not impressed by him. Second round matches are Yang vs. Daniels and Dutt vs. Colon. Pretty clear that Dutt is going to the finals not sure how the other match will play out though.

Mikey Whipwreck vs. Norman Smiley
Both men without their usual managers. We actually get a chant for GI Ho from the fans. No commentary on this match which is weird. After two minutes of some stalling and a little back and forth Mikey blocks in arm drag and takes over on Norman. Mikey makes fun of the high pitched screams of Norman. Norman comes back with a few clotheslines and the big swinging slam. Norman goes for the big wiggle but Mikey kicks him low. Mikey gets a few near falls by beating on Norman and then sends him into the second ring. Norman takes a Flair bump on a corner whip and then clotheslines Mikey from the apron. They are now on the apron between the two rings. Norman slams Mikey’s head into both rings turnbuckles. Norman charges Mikey but he gets a boot up. Mikey goes up but Norman knocks him down and Mikey is lying across the two rings big wiggle by Norman. They are both on the turnbuckle now and Mikey hits a super whippersnapper for the win in 7.39. Nice use of the apron between both rings. Mikey was good when he was making fun of Norman.

Matt Martel & Rich Criado vs. Mana
Francine comes to the ring to scout. Mana throws Criado over his shoulder and hits a cutter. Samu and Ekmo show up in the crowd beating on Monsta Mac. They fight to ringside Mac is really beat down. The match is now a six man falls count anywhere match. So yet again Mafia is a no show. The crowd has been pretty dead all night and even a Samoan brawl isn’t getting them up and loud. The Samoans go to the stage and put Criado in a wheel chair and send him off the stage. Crowd liked that and it looked pretty cool. Ekmo gets a hulk hand!! Mac bends a chair over Mana’s head but it does nothing. Mac spears Mana on the floor. Mac puts Samu in a corner and lays a garbage can on it. Mac jumps off the top rope in the opposite corner and head butts the can. I don’t get why that was a good idea. In the ring they take over on Mana. Samu and Ekmo get in the ring and turn things back in their favor. Samu superkicks a garbage can into Mac’s face. Mana with a 2nd rope Samoan drop. Ekmo hits a press slam into a samoan drop on Martel. They put Martel on a table in the crowd. Ekmo climbs to the buckle and dives over the ring post into the crowd through the table and gets the win in 9.51. Another awesome finish from Ekmo. Mac’s team got in to much offense, should have been more of a squash then it was.

Joe Seanoa vs. Mike Awesome
Seanoa is better known as Samoa Joe. Flying shoulder block by Awesome and Joe goes to the floor. Awesome hits the ropes and dives over the top with a plancha. Awesome sets up a table outside. Awesome his a slingshot shoulder block from the apron back into the ring. Joe sent into the corner and Awesome charges but Joe hits a STO. Suplex from Joe gets 2. Chop fight ends when Joe switches up to a few forearms. Enzuiguri by Joe and they go back to the floor. Joe hits a weak chair shot that the fans boo. He sits Awesome in chair and hits a running boot to the face. Two count back in the ring as the fans rally behind Awesome. Another chop fight and Awesome charges and hits a clothesline but is cut off right away with another big boot. Joe ducks a clothesline and hits a German for 2. STF but Awesome gets to the ropes. Fans begin to chant “boring”. Joe brings a chair in the ring but gets cut off. Awesome slides under a clothesline and BLASTs Joe with a chair and hits a sit out Awesomebomb for 2. Awesome puts the chair on Joe and comes off the top with a big splash for the win in 7.14. Gotta go with the fans on this one, pretty boring. Sick chair shot from Awesome but nothing else at all worth seeing. No commentary on this match which means it probably won’t be on TV.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament Semifinals: Eddie Colon vs. Sonjay Dutt
Dutt with an injured leg from his first round match. He sells it on his way down to the ring but once the bell sounds he seems perfectly fine. Dutt quickly hits a rana but Colon thumbs him in the eye. Dutt sends Colon to the floor and then springboards to the floor with a spinny flippy thing. Back in the ring Dutt goes up top but gets cut off and Colon hits a razor edge into a power bomb for 2. Superplex by Colon for 2. Dutt fights back and hits a back body drop. Colon begs off as Dutt tries to fire up the crowd. Dutt with a big boot he does the hand to the ear and fakes going for a leg drop but hits a standing shooting star for 2. Colon back up and he hits a clothesline. Colon comes off the top with a sunset flip. A few near Colon with a springboard but Dutt spinebusters him and rolls him up for 3 in 5.59. So Dutt didn’t sell the leg at all during the match nor did Colon attack the leg at all. Another boring match.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament Semifinals: Jimmy Yang vs. “Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels (w/ Mikey Whipwreck)
Daniels beats down Yang to start. Yang comes back with a rana that sends Daniels to the floor. Baseball slide follows and Yang has the advantage on the floor dropping Daniels chest first on the guardrail a few times. Yang with a second rope spin kick back in the ring and a nice vertical suplex for 2. Daniels sent into the corner. He gets a knee up on Yang’s charge then hits a gut buster. Another one by Daniels and Mikey gets in on the action behind the refs back. Daniels works over the abdomen of Yang for the next few minutes. Daniels comes off the top rope but Yang hits a spin kick as Daniels dives at him. Daniels with a tornado DDT but Yang handsprings out of it and lands on his feet. Daniels with a Urinagi but then he misses the BME. Spin kick by Yang for 2. Yang goes up top but Mikey slows him down. Daniels tries to cut it off now but he gets knocked down and Yang hits the yang time to a standing Daniels for 2. Yang goes up top again but Mikey crotches him allowing Daniels to hit the last rites for the victory in 8.19. Better then Daniels’ last match but still nothing great,

Raven vs. Nosawa
No CM Punk with Nosawa. Nosawa with the early advantage on Raven. We get our first good shot of the crowd, it’s much emptier then the last time they were here. That’s when Awesome won the title and then immediately dropped it to Corino and the crowd shit all over it. Now that I’m reminded of that I realize why the crowd has been so dead tonight. Raven fights back and hits the high knee and running bulldog. Raven goes for the pin but the straight edge ref comes out and distracts the ref. Nosawa with a superkick for 2. Punk comes to the ring and grabs Raven. Raven moves out of the way of another superkick, it hits Punk, Raven nails the DDT and gets the win in 4.34. Punk gets a mic and runs down Nosawa. Vampiro hits the ring making his return to MLW! We get a bell and have…

CM Punk vs. Vampiro
Vamp with an overhead belly to belly and spin kick that sends Punk to the floor. Maybe we will finally get that Raven Vampiro match from months ago. Punk sends Vamp into the guardrail but then gets back dropped into the crowd. They fight into the crowd. Back in the ring Punk able to take over and he gets a 2 count after a Russian leg sweep. Vertical suplex by Punk for 2. Vamp comes back with a kick that takes down Punk. Vamp goes up top but takes way to much time as Punk gets up and pushes the ref into the ropes crotching Vamp. Punk with a super rana but Vamp rolls through it and gets the win in 5.28. Vamp leaves through the crowd. All the matches tonight are too short. These last two were good for storyline though. Fans are going crazy for Vamp. It seems that the story between Vamp and Punk will continue.

Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament Finals: Sonjay Dutt vs. “Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels (w/ Mikey Whipwreck)
Daniels sweeps the legs and gets a 2 count right away. Daniels with a back body drop and elbow for 2. Dutt to the floor and Mikey whips him back and forth from the guardrail to the apron. Daniels with a hanging vertical suplex that lasts a legit 20 seconds. Dutt comes back with a rana but Daniels right back on top. Daniels sends Dutt sternum first into the buckle three times. Tilt a whirl back breaker and Daniels taunts the crowd. Daniels goes for another tilt-a-whirl move but Dutt lands it in an octopus stretch. Daniels quickly reverses it and throws Dutt to the floor. Mikey gets in a few shots and sends him back to Daniels. Daniels with multiple cocky pin attempts but Dutt kicks out each time. Urinagi and the BME for a 2. Dutt ducks a clothesline and back elbow and lands a springboard elbow. Dutt fights back and hits a serious of moves that ends in a neckbreaker. Daniels goes to the floor. Dutt hopes on three different ropes using both rings and then dives onto Daniels. That was aweomse. Back in the ring Daniels hits a running STO and a sit out power bomb. After each man gets a few roll ups for 2 counts Dutt is able to run up the buckle and hit a rana. Mikey however distracts the ref so no count is made. Dutt dives onto Mikey. Dutt clotheslines Daniels on the top rope and hits the Himalayan press to become the first every MLW Junior Heavyweight Champion in 10.04. Decent enough. It was Daniels best match of the night.

War Games Handicap Match: Funkin’ Army vs. Extreme Horsemen
CW Anderson starts off with Sandman. Sandman busts himself open with his beer can. CW jumps Sandman as he gets into the ring. Sandman fights back and grabs his cane but gets superkicked. Anderson now with the cane he hits Sandman with it a few times but then Sandman blocks it and hits a Russian leg sweep. Anderson eats cage. Anderson busted open now. Suplex by Sandman and then he locks on a cross face. Anderson bleeding a lot and the first 5 minute period ends in 4.07. Gotta love wrestling clocks. Champion Steve Corino is out for his team and he has barbed wire wrapped around his fist. They beat on Sandman for the 2 minutes until Terry Funk comes out throwing chairs over the cage. Funk helps swing the advantage in his teams favor. He hits a piledriver on Corino. Simon Diamond out next for his team. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams is out as the final member of the Funkin’ Army. Sandman with a senton onto Anderson. Crowd is sitting on their hands this whole match. PJ Walker is out next with a ladder. Funk puts the ladder on his head and spins around hitting Anderson and Diamond. Sabu and Bill Alfonso come out next instead of Barry Windham! Sabu was supposed to be out for 3 months with an injury but he comes to join the Funkin’ Army. Sabu hits the ring and takes out everyone. Alfonso gets a table into the cage. Corino is busted open. Williams presses Corino from on ring into the other. Windham in out next and he hits a piledriver on Funk. Alfonso grabs a mic and says 5 on 4 is bullshit and jumps in the ring. Sabu puts Walker through a table. As the Match Beyond begins. Diamond beating down Alfonso. Corino has Sabu in a half carb and Funk comes over with a flaming branding iron. Funk brands Corino then blows fire into his face! Funk locks in the spinning toe hold and Corino submits in 20.49. Well I wish I could love this since it’s War Games but it was pretty boring and the dead crowd didn’t help.

My thoughts on the show…
Lots more no shows, way to many matches on this card and a boring War Games make this a pass. It was clear with this show that MLW killed the town with the way they booked Hybrid Hell a few months ago.

The Jake “The Snake” Roberts documentary, The Resurrection of Jake ‘The Snake’, will kick off the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival this upcoming weekend in Park City, Utah. The documentary was chosen over 7,500 other films.

The film looks at Roberts’ troubled childhood and his battles with substance abuse, to his eventual recovery after moved in with Diamond Dallas Page in 2012 to train and get back into shape. Filmmaker Steve Yu, who had worked with Page in the past, inspired the documentary.

“Dallas and I didn’t go into this thinking, ‘We’re going to help this alcoholic and drug addict,'” Yu recently told The Salt Lake Tribune. “We knew that Jake had kind of lost hope in his life and that he needed some help with his health. It turned into something we didn’t expect it to.”

The world premiere of the documentary is this Friday, January 23rd. It will screen once more the following Tuesday, January 27th. You can get more details at SlamDance.com.

Source: F4WOnline

– Velvet Sky will be signing autographs this Saturday at the Ramada Conference Center in Fishkill, New York (located at 542 U.S. 9, Fishkill, New York 12524). Click here for additional information.

– Following reports that TNA Wrestling was looking to acquire former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio, Lucha Underground announced Sunday the signing of the 38-year-old—he will be wrestling under the name Alberto El Patrón. Wrestling Observer editor Dave Meltzer reported that TNA Wrestling president Dixie Carter had wanted Del Rio to appear on the premiere episode of Impact Wrestling on the network. According to Meltzer, Del Rio declined a favorable contract from the organization.

“They (TNA) offered him $400,000 a year for minimal dates,” Meltzer noted Sunday on the F4WOnline.com message board in a thread about Del Rio joining Lucha Underground. “It says more about the perception in the industry that TNA is a career killer.”
