UFC Fight Night 59 Results 1/18/15

UFC Fight Night 59 was completely advertised as the Conor McGregor show, and the brash Irishman completely lived up to the hype.

Now 17-2, McGregor was completely dominant over the #10 Dennis Siver. Throughout the two round affair McGregor peppered the elder Siver with a barrage of punches and kicks all while holding his hands by his waist. After the fight, McGregor jumped the cage and got in the face of UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, who he’ll fight later this year for the title.

The night’s co-main event saw a controversial decision, as #3 ranked Donald Cerrone defeated #5 ranked Ben Henderson after fighting just 15 days prior. Fans and media alike generally thought Ben Henderson took home a 29-28 victory after a back and forth battle. When the scorecards were read, Henderson was infuriated and Cerrone looked a bit surprised. This was Cerrone’s first victory in three fights against Henderson.

Following the fight Henderson took to the mic, saying he would gladly fight next week. Henderson is no stranger to close fights, as he’d also experienced controversial decisions against Frankie Edgar, Josh Thomson, and Gilbert Melendez.

Fight Night Bonus winners included Conor McGregor and Lorenz Larkin, in addition to Matt Van Buren vs. Sean O’Connell winning fight of night honors.

Colling’s Corner: Joey Mercury – A Prospect Turned Stooge

Fourteen years ago, Joey Matthews was a top prospect for the fledging promotion Extreme Championship Wrestling. For the final handful of months that ECW existed, Matthews provided a spark to the tag team scene with partner Christian York. Their rise in the company was clear, but never was able to become a reality with the company going out of business in January 2001.

A year later Matthews started to compete for the startup company Ring of Honor. While Joey wouldn’t accomplish much for the company, he was back in the spotlight. Matthews really found his niche and got pushed hard in the Philadelphia based company Pro-Pain Pro Wrestling (3PW) where he competed from 2002 to late 2004.

While with 3PW, Matthews was presented as the top heel in the company and briefly led a stable involving Matt Striker and Rob Eckos (aka Robbie E in TNA). Matthews would be put into matches against top independent wrestlers Low Ki, AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn. Matthews surprised many by not only holding his own in the ring with these stars, but coming out the winner as well.

On April 17th, 2004, Matthews was able to achieve the biggest win of his career when he won the 3PW Heavyweight Championship from Raven, who was a main event star for TNA. Matthews held the championship for four months before losing the title to Christopher Daniels. By the end of the year, Matthews would be gone from the independents and training to become a character on national television.

By the end of 2004, Matthews was signed by the WWE, officially, and worked for the development company Ohio Valley Wrestling. He formed a tag team with Tough Enough winner John Henngian known as MNM. They would have a female manager named Melina. Their gimmick was that as guys who were famous and were led to the ring with a bunch of paparazzi. The team caught fire quickly as they won the OVW Southern Tag Team Championships on November 14th , 2004. They held the championships until January 19th, 2005 where they lost to the Thrillseekers in what was a highly popular feud.

It wouldn’t take long for the team to be called up to the Smackdown brand for the WWE. The group made their debut shortly after WrestleMania 21 and won the WWE Tag Team Championships in their debut match defeating Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio. Matthews stock in the company and in wrestling had never been higher.

At the time, Matthews was seen as the veteran leading the rookie Nitro. It makes me wonder how far Johnny Nitro would have really gone without Joey Matthews.

They’d lose the titles to the new Legion of Doom in July, but regained them in October only to lose again to Batista and Rey Mysterio in December. Two weeks later, MNM won the belts for the third time in eight months. Their third and final reign would be their longest reign. Brian Kendrick and Paul London dethroned MNM on May 21st 2006 to start their historic title reign that would last three hundred and thirty one days.

Anyway, back to Matthews. The downward spiral for Matthews came to public light after the loss as Nitro and Melina turned on him to go to RAW and start a singles career. Matthews had actually been suspended for a failed wellness test.

Six months later, Matthews returned for a brief MNM reunion but suffered a career altering injury at Armageddon 2006 when a ladder literally smashed Joey’s face. The injury caused Matthews to develop an addiction to pain killers and would lose his job by March 2007 thanks to an intervention by his boss, Vince McMahon.

Despite the injury and losing a high paying job, Matthews stayed busy on the independents. He briefly reformed his tag team with longtime friend Christian York losing to the Motor City Machine Guns at an AAW event on September 29th, 2007. During the time, Matthews had wrestled matches with the likes of Alex Shelley, Brother Runt, Tyler Black (Seth Rollins) and Too Cold Scorpio.

I personally followed his time during the Scorpio feud which was taking place in Pro Wrestling Unplugged. Matthews wasn’t able to claim the PWU Heavyweight Championship from Scorpio but was presented as a top heel. His work was recognized and was hired by Ring of Honor a second time.

Matthews joined ROH’s top heel faction the Age of the Fall for a brief time but was the jobber of the group. Shortly after, Matthews retired from professional wrestling.

That retirement lasted two years before returning to the WWE to be part of the Straight Edge Society that was led by CM Punk. Matthews was put under a mask when he made his debut at Extreme Rules on April 25th, 2010. He was unmasked by Big Show on July 23rd.

After suffering a torn pectoral muscle, Matthews would be off television until recently when he became a security guy for the Authority along with Jamie Noble. Matthews is essentially a modern day stooge.

I felt the felt the need to show people that Matthews is a rather talented performer who was at one point the hottest act in WWE. Yeah, MNM was that good.

I’ve noticed more and more that fans are ripping on Matthews and Noble. I’d imagine they are more casual fans than diehards. I mean, to try and say that Noble isn’t talented, that’s just ridiculous statement.

Matthews talent and ability seems to have become a forgotten about by many wrestling fans. The once top prospect is much more than a stooge, it’s just a matter of the WWE wanting to allow Matthews to shine one last time.

Reliving a Feud – Issue #8: Tommy Dreamer vs. CW Anderson

Tommy Dreamer vs. CW Anderson in ECW

Relive the feud between Tommy Dreamer and Cw Anderson during the dying days of Extreme Championship Wrestling!

In late 2000, CW Anderson was starting to make a name for himself in Extreme Championship Wrestling. At that point, he had been with the company for around a year, but wasn’t making any progress up the card. With ECW at a loss for star power, the promotion needed to create new stars towards the end of its existence. CW Anderson was given a chance against a guy who had been with ECW since 1994 and was the heart and soul of ECW, “The Innovator of Violence” Tommy Dreamer.

The feud started at the November To Remember on November 5th, 2000. Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger were taunting Joel Gertner and Joey Styles until Tommy Dreamer came out to make the save for the announcers. CW Anderson ran down as well and attacked Dreamer with a spinebuster and an armbreaker.

Anderson would go on to team with Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger on the house shows to take on Tommy Dreamer, Christian York and Joey Matthews in six-man tags. Anderson and his team were unable to score a win. However, CW would get the biggest win of his Extreme Championship Wrestling career on December 3rd, 2000.

That was the date of ECW’s PPV “Massacre on 34th Street”. On the show, CW Anderson shockingly prevailed over Tommy Dreamer after nearly seventeen minutes of action. The finish saw Anderson hit a spine buster on the legs of a table. Anderson continued to get the better of Dreamer at the last ECW Arena show on December 23rd when Anderson attacked Dreamer and cost him a six-man tag match against the Hot Commodity.

The issues between Dreamer and Anderson would come to an end at the last pay-per-view in the history of ECW, “Guilty As Charged” in 2001. In what has to be considered the last great match Dreamer has put on, the Innovator of Violence defeated CW Anderson in a brutal “I Quit” match.

Yes, the feud is incredibly short, but ECW was on it’s last legs at this time. Had the company continued, there is no doubt in my mind that the feud would have continued for several more months, which was a trend for most angles in ECW. In my opinion, CW Anderson was the next main event level heel for ECW, but he never got the chance.

To his credit, Dreamer was always willing to make a new star for ECW and the proof is with this feud. Anderson hadn’t done anything memorable up until this time with the company, and a victory over Dreamer quickly gave him a lot of heat and momentum in ECW. Even the hard to impress ECW fans were buying into Anderson’s potential.

Anderson has to be considered one of the most underrated wrestlers in ECW history, a man who never got his fair shot outside of ECW. He would be in the same category as Jerry Lynn, Simon Diamond and countless others.

It’s a quick feud that I recommend viewing. The Guilty As Charged match, the better of the two, is on dailymotion. Go check it out and enjoy.

Two Former WWE Wrestlers File Class-Action ‘Concussion Lawsuit’ Against WWE

Former WWE stars Vito Lograsso (Big Vito) and Evan Singleton (Adam Mercer in developmental) have filed a class-action “concussion lawsuit” against WWE in the state of Pennsylvania. They are being represented by the same lawyer as former WWE star Billy Jack Haynes, who also has a lawsuit out against WWE.

The complaints from Haynes and Lograsso/Singleton appear to be virtually identical except for short paragraphs about the complainants.

Singleton’s complaint mentions wrestling WWE Superstar Erick Rowan in developmental as Singleton claims, “After approximately 15 matches, during which he sustained multiple traumas, he suffered a serious head injury during a match with Eric Rowen [sic]. The WWE cleared him to continue wrestling after inadequate rest time and downplayed his injury.”

Singleton was apparently out of action for five months after a match against Rowan. He then worked one more match and was released from his developmental deal. Singleton has suffered from a number of severe neurological symptoms and later found out that he had bleeding in the left hemisphere of his brain.

Lograsso noted that he “suffers from serious neurological damage, including severe headaches, memory loss, depression and anxiety, as well as deafness.”

Former UFC Fighter Slams Dana White, Challenges White And CM Punk To A Fight

Veteran independent wrestler Diafullah Dobashi welcomed former UFC fighter Matthew Riddle to the most recent episode of his podcast, “Dobashi’s Radio Takedown” (Episode 29). Riddle was fired from UFC in 2013 for marijuana use. He is now training for a career in professional wrestling.

Dobashi and Riddle discussed the controversy over Jon Jones’s recent positive test for cocaine and Dobashi played two separate audio clips featuring audio from Dana White. In the first clip, White discusses his personal concern for Jones over his cocaine use and says he did not stop Jones’s recent UFC fight because cocaine is not considered to be a “performance enhancing drug.” Then Dobashi played an older clip of White talking about Matthews’ marijuana use in which the UFC owner described Matthews as a “dummy” and being “weak minded and addicted to marijuana.” Riddle said that White didn’t like him because he spoke his mind while he was in UFC.

“Dana White’s a b-tch. He knows he’s a b-tch. He was born a b-tch. That’s why his mom named him Dana,” Riddle said. “It really don’t matter. I know he ain’t going to hire me back—I don’t want that job. I’m going to run sh-t in the WWE. If they don’t hire me, I’m going to run sh-t in TNA. If they don’t hire me, I’m going to run sh-t in New Japan. If they don’t hire me, I’ll f—king find somewhere else and I’ll still make a living.”

Riddle talked about growing up watching the Attitude Era and training at The Monster Factory. He said he’s had training sessions with MVP and Jay Lethal thus far.

A fan-submitted e-mail asked Riddle for his opinions on CM Punk’s move to UFC and Riddle respondent with his well-established candor.

“Dude, not only would I fight CM Punk; I’d break his f—king jaw in the first round,” Riddle exclaimed. “No disrespect to CM Punk. I know he’s training hard and he means well but that’s just what it is and he ain’t a beast like I am. He’s a wannabe. But… I would like to fight CM Punk and Dana White at the same time in a handicapped match in the octagon and you make that UFC 189, baby… Not only is that a challenge, it’s a threat.”

Riddle said he’d smoke both guys “like a pack of Kools.”

CM Punk’s MMA Trainer Talks Progress, Punk’s Attitude, Skill Set, More

MMA and kickboxing trainer Duke Roufus appeared on the Jason Ellis Show recently and discussed his new high profile student in CM Punk. Punk has been training with Roufusport for two weeks now.

“I know a lot of people are dragging the guy down, but I gotta say he’s taking it seriously,” Roufus said. “I’m not saying he’s the best now, but the guy is very committed and it’s going to be exciting.”

“I’ve been training him, but I don’t wanna put that video out,” Roufus replied when a host asked if there was any video of Punk hitting pads yet. “He’s a physical guy, when he’s done with me he will be (at a professional level). Six months to a year. It will be quality over quantity. Today was his first practice with the team actually.”

Roufus said that Punk’s UFC debut will get more attention for fighters and increase their paychecks.

“I’m used to being around guys who are determined, willing people and he’s one of them,” Roufus said. “If I thought it was a joke, I wouldn’t back him. I’m into the sanctity of martial arts. He’s the most humble person in the gym. The best thing is that people who weren’t talking about mixed martial arts are now.”

“The guy is a sponge, and is getting better every day.” said Roufus.
