UFC Fight Night Krakow is in the books, and this lull in the UFC’s stacked 2015 provided a fair share of shocking moments. The Polish crowd did not leave disappointed.
Legend Mirko Cro Cop stunned the Krakow, Poland crowd by finishing longtime rival Gabriel Gonzaga in the third round. Gonzaga had made a name off of Cro Cop eight years ago, by finishing the Croatian with his own signature head kick. When UFC signed Cro Cop from under Bellator, the match was a natural to make.
Gonzaga controlled the early rounds with his overwhelming grappling, handling the older CroCop with ease. Halfway through the third, CroCop landed a huge inside shot that dropped Gonzaga, and proceeded to work from inside Gonzaga’s guard. Several elbows later, the referee stopped the fight, and an overjoyed crowd roared. After the bout, Cro Cop pledged that he would continue fighting.
Joanne Calderwood, the undefeated (in non-exhibition fights) #6-ranked women’s strawweight was on the receiving end of one of the biggest upsets of the year. Many had her pegged to defeat newcomer Maryna Moroz in a landslide, but Moroz had other plans. It took only 90 seconds for Moroz to lock on an armbar and submit Calderwood, likely catapulting her into the top 10 ranking.
Leon Edwards made a name for himself in only eight seconds on Saturday, as he knocked out Seth Baczynski with a straight right off of the bat. Baczynski is a veteran of 11 UFC fights, but may be on his way out after losing 5 of his last 6.
