Kevin Nash Says WWE Has Taken The Market, Gives Credit To Triple H

0

Source: The Miami Herald

WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash recently spoke with Scott Fishman of The Miami Herald to promote Friday’s Legends of Wrestling Night at the Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres game. The full interview is at this link. Below are some highlights:

Benefits of the WWE Network:

“With the network now I go to signings and there are as many eight-year-old kids, as well as 35-year-olds because the network plays all the old stuff. To them, it’s basically this live stream. They meet you and you maybe don’t look like you do on the network, but they understand who you are and what you do. So the network is really nice to have.”

Now being a different time for WWE in the business:

“They have built a basic farm system. There isn’t anybody in the realm in competing with them. They have taken the market. It now goes Raw, SmackDown and NXT. There are now three brands. There are a lot of guys I watch today. I’ve been a fan of [Dolph] Ziggler since day one. I saw the big 6-foot-8 kid down at NXT. [Big Cass], I think really has a chance. He is a big guy and athletic. I think he has a chance to make it.”

Giving credit to Triple H:

“I think a lot of the credit has to go to Paul Levesque [Triple H]. He really understands the business. One of the most poignant things he ever said to me was, ‘It’s not only the fact we have to replace the guys in the ring, but we have to teach the guys with the handhelds and steady cams. I’ve got guys who have been carrying cameras for 30 years now. They aren’t going to be doing this forever.’ What they’ve done with NXT and Full Sail [University] is basically also focus on the production. People don’t realize how important the cameras are. This is a hands-on experience and proving ground, A to Z, from people in the truck and all the way up. It’s about pushing this product and having it continually grow.”

Robert Gibson on NWA Stars Being Mad The Rock N Roll Express Were Top Draws:

Being a trainer for WWE and owning his own wrestling school:

When they went to Florida they closed OVW, but a lot of the guys I had the chance to work with went up to WWE. (Jack) Swagger, Kofi Kingston, I just enjoy training. I’ve got a training center in Douglasville, Georgia and I love the business. The stuff we did you just don’t see it being done anymore. I used to do a flying head scissor, you just don’t see anybody doing that. Now, I’ve got some good “boys” up here that are doing real good. After they get through throwing up for a couple of days they are ready to go.

Inspiration behind the look of the Rock N Roll Express:

Back then, when we first started we went and got some rock and roll magazines and we would see how the rock and rollers were dressing and we just made it our own. They kept us so busy that we didn’t have time to think about what was going on. We were in different towns every night and flying every day and going nine months without a day off.

Did they feel underpaid while in Jim Crockett Promotions:

We should have made more then what we did. When we first went there they said the territory was down but I never saw a bad house while I was there. We seemed like we broke records everywhere we went. Records that Crocket Promotions had for fifty years we broke the first week in. Raleigh, North Carolina our first night there it was $48,000 and it broke the record that Ric Flair and Blackjack Mulligan had, they had only $27,000 there. When we had 48 Dusty called a meeting and said that it was like Babe Ruth and that the record would never be broken, two weeks later back in the doors at the arena in Raleigh, North Carolina we didn’t only break that record we took it from 48 to $68,000. After that we had a gate that was up to $72,000. Before you knew it, Crocket was buying jet-planes. By the time we left it seemed like the territory just sort of faded away. I don’t think (Ric) Flair or Dusty were ever upset with us. I just remember after they bought out Verne Gagne, Dusty went to Baltimore and they left me and Ricky against The Barbarian and somebody else to main event in Charlotte. They did something like $27,000 up there and we did something like $110,000 with nobody except us and underneath guys. Dusty then called us in the office and said “Boys, there are two things you don’t do in this territory and it’s sell out The Coliseum when I am not on the card. It was crazy, we were so just over.

Memories of teaming with Dusty Rhodes and helping training Cody Rhodes:

Dusty was fun to be around. He did a lot for the business. He is an icon everybody knows. My hats off to him. I remember when we had six man tag matches and when he would get in the ring and he’d say “Brother, tie one of those bandannas around me”. You never stop learning in this business. Dusty told me before he passed that he appreciated what I did with helping train Cody. Cody was good then and he has gone on to be really good.

Wrestling in a Scaffold Match and being pitched the concept:

I didn’t say no because I wasn’t scared of heights, but at first there was no way I was going up there. Back then they just kind of threw the thing together and it looked kind of dangerous. In Chicago, I hit Dennis (Condrey) over the head with the iron rail that was up top and when I fell up against the rail it wasn’t hooked and it opened up and I almost fell into the crowd. If you ever see that tape, that rod; I grabbed it and hit him but when I did it took my left index fingernail off and blood was going everywhere and I was hitting Dennis with that damn rod but really I was lucky I didn’t fall into the third row or something out there.

Robert Gibson also discusses the mass hysteria that he and Ricky Morton caused outside the ring, teaming with his brother Ricky Gibson, wrestling for weeks straight, The Rock N Roll Expresses legacy and his matches with Jim Cornette and The Midnight Express.

The “OH MY GOD!” Review: ECW Hardcore Heaven ’94

0

Hardcore Heaven 1994-08-13 at ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pa

Champions
Heavyweight: “The Franchise” Shane Douglas
TV: Mikey Whipwreck
Tag: Public Enemy

Hack Meyers vs. Rockin’ Rebel, ref John Finnegan
These two teamed at last months Heatwave and had a falling out at the end of that match. Guillotine leg drop on the apron by Hack. Rabel though comes back and chops Hack in the corner. Rebel with a russian leg sweep. Hack fights back and but misses a corner charge. Rebel sets his head for a back body drop but Hack throws him to the mat. Hack now goes for one but Rebel hops over and goes for a belly to back. Hack turns into it and covers for the win in 4.30.

“Ironman” Tommy Cairo vs. Chad Austin, ref Jim Molineaux
Joey Styles expects Cairo to run through Austin in this match. With Cairo’s recent decent down the ladder of ECW I highly doubt that will happen. Cairo with a nice suplex to start off followed by a belly to belly. Press slam gets 2. Austin goes for a leap frog but gets caught with an inverted atomic drop. A few clotheslines and spin kick floor Austin. Austin reverses a corner whip but misses a charge and goes through the ropes to the floor. Belly to back by Cairo but Austin’s leg falls over the bottom rope so he can’t be pinned. Cairo with a powerslam and he goes up top. Austin dicks a spin kick and comes off the second buckle with a sunset flip for 2. Austin right into a school boy and he puts his feet on the ropes and gets the 3 in 4.32. Austin sneaks away with a win after getting his ass kicked.

No DQ Match: TV Champion Mikey Whipwreck vs. Jason, ref John Finnegan
Wow really throwing out all of Jason’s guys early in the show. Jason pushes Mikey to the mat. Mikey ducks a line and back elbow and hits a cross body for 2. Atomic drop, drop kick, hip toss, arm drag, body slam and drop kick send Jason to the floor and have the crowd going crazy! Jason turns his back and takes a baseball slide that sends him into the guard rail. Mikey comes off the apron with a double axe handle but Jason boots him in the stomach. Front suplex onto a table and Mikey is hurt. Jason with a leg drop through the table. Jason suplexes Mikey back into the ring. Joey has been running a joke during the match about Jay Sulli being a drunk even pretending that he is talking to him. Back in the ring Jason keeps the advantage hitting a snaemare and going into a chin lock. Mikey tries to come back with a few roll ups that get 2. They do a small package spot where they keep reversing it for 2 counts. On the last one Mikey almost gets a 3 but the ref switches hands he is using to count. The fans want the ref dead. They go to the floor and Mikey turns things around and nails Jason with a chair. Back in Mikey up top but he misses a cross body block. Jason goes and gets the chair and brings it in the ring. Mikey gets it away from him and swing but Jason ducks and the ref gets nailed. Mikey wails Jason and covers but the ref is out. The ref begins to wake up and he crawls over and makes the count. The Pitbulls him the ring and crotch Mikey. Pitbulls pull Jason over on top and the ref makes the 3 count. Again? What the fuck. Jason is the new TV Champion in 12.10. What the fuck was that. Seriously I’m so confused. The only thing I can think of is that the ref screwed up and “woke up” to soon and legit thought Jason was the one making the pin. The match was good and then the finish happened. Tazmaniac and “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka hit the ring and attack the Pitbulls.

Pitbulls vs. Tazmaniac & “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka, ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
Tazmaniac hits an overhead belly to belly on Pitbull 2. Snuka goes up top and hits the superfly splash as Taz nails Pitbull 1 with a half nelson suplex. Double pin gets the win in .39. Ok so pretty clearly they fucked up the finish to the previous match and the tag match was run out there and ended so quickly so fans can be happy again and forget about the title switch.

Mr. Hughes (w/ Heavyweight Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas & Angel) vs. 911 (w/ Paul E Dangerously), ref John Finnegan
Douglas give a personal intro for Hughes. Wow Finnegan didn’t get fired over the end of the last match. I expect this match to fully expose 911 as a terrible wrestler. Big stare down and they charge each other and neither moves. They go to blows with Hughes getting a bit of the advantage. Hughes with a nice looking choke slam for 2. The slam looks better then most of 911’s. Hughes goes for a sidewalk slam but it’s blocked. 911 hits the chokeslam and gets the pin in 3.36. Hughes kicks out right at 3. Douglas and Angel get in the ring and Paul E gets nailed by Douglas. Shane pulls Angel in front of 911 so he can get away. She slaps 911 and gets slammed twice as Paul E says she smells like a dead fish.

Singapore Cane Match: Sandman (w/ Woman) vs. Tommy Dreamer, ref Jim Molineaux
“Enter Sandman” debuts as the new theme song for Sandman tonight. Dreamer comes from under the ring with a cane and starts wailing on Sandman busting him open. He again kisses Woman nails the ref and continues the beating on Sandman. Dreamer nails announcer Bob Artese and goes back to work on Sandman. They just tried really hard to get Dreamer over has hardcore but the fans didn’t care much and some even booed Dreamer. Dreamer leaves and Woman lights a cigarette and puts it in Sandman’s mouth to wake him up. This was kinda shitty and didn’t get over the way they wanted. Sandman is to much of a favorite to get Dreamer over. It’s just going to piss off the fans by having Dreamer beat him down.

Basebrawl Match: Tag Team Champions Public Enemy vs. Bad Breed, ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
So if someone gets knocked out for a 10 count the other team gets a baseball bat to use. Falls also count anywhere. Bad Breed have been on a pretty decent run of fun squash matches. This will obviously not be a squash. “Flyboy” Rocco Roc attacks Hat Guy and he sells it. Roc says if anyone else calls them jail birds they are going to leave. Axl Rotten gets the chant going and the PE start to leave. The ref begins his 10 count in a falls count anywhere match. That makes no sense. The ref gets hit in the nuts and grossly oversells it and getting hit in the nuts really hurts so for it to be oversold you really have to go over the top. Roc ducks a Ian Rotten clothesline and hits a springboard moonsault for 2. He goes up top and hits a moonsault on a standing Ian. He goes up top again but Ian hits a drop kick to counter. Ian back drops Roc to the floor. Johnny Grunge goes to check on him and Axl backdrops Ian onto them. They all fight on the floor. Back in the ring Axl hits an avalanche on Roc and Grunge tags in. Grunge doesn’t do much then tags back out as does Ian. Crowd dead as I’m sure they were expecting much more of a brawl. Ian with a drop kick in the corner. Roc comes back with a spin kick. Roc hits a side slam and Grunge comes the top with an elbow. Ian rolls under a clothesline and tags. Axl comes in and beats on both PE. Ian comes back in with a chair and nails Roc. Bad Breed with the doomsday device and it gets them a 10 count and the bats. One bat gets brought down to the ring and Axl uses it on the skull of Grunge. Grunge goes low. The fans are confused cause they thought the match was over. It must end in pinball. Grunge gets the bat and nails Axl and Roc climbs a scaffold and comes off onto Ian. All four men now brawl in the crowd. Roc and Ian go into the Eagle’s Nest. Roc wraps a rope around the neck of Ian. Grunge hits a DDT at ringside on Axl. Back in the ring PE with the reverse DDT and drive by for the win in 15.58. Bleh.

Sabu (w/ Paul E Dangerously & 911) vs. 2 Cold Scorpio, ref John Finnegan
Sabu hits the ring and goes after the legs of Scorpio. Scorpio gets away and they face off. Each man tries to gain the advantage but they are very evenly matched. Scorpio with a drop kick and Sabu rolls to the floor. Sabu goes for a sunset flip power bomb out of the ring but Scorpio holds onto the ropes and Sabu crashes to the floor. Baseball slide and slingshot plancha to the floor by Scorpio. Slingshot splash back into the ring gets 2 and then Scorpio locks in a surfboard. Sick reverse tombstone piledriver and Sabu’s head bounces off the mat. Scorpio with a standing 270 degree leg drop for 2. Splash of the top rope but Sabu gets his knees up. Sabu with a arabian press for 2 followed by a slingshot leg drop from the apron. Power bomb by Scorpio gets 2. Scorpio bounces off the ropes and goes for a flying forearm but Sabu ducks and Scorpio hits the mat and then rolls all the way out of the ring. Sabu dives out of the ring onto Scorpio. Sabu leans a table onto the guard rail and then hits a suicide dive putting Scorpio through the table. Sabu whips Scorpio over the rail into the crowd. Chair to the back of the head but Scorpio basically no sells it and hits a super kick. Sabu sits Scorpio in a chair and tries to dive onto him but Scorpio moves and Sabu crashes into the chair. Scorpio with a few chair shots and then back into the ring. Sabu reverses a tombstone piledriver and hits a seated tombstone on a chair. Scorpio able to get his foot on the rope at 2. Sabu goes for a moonsault off the top but misses. Scorpio with a belly to back slingshot 450 gets 2. Scorpio with a slam and the tumbleweed for 2.9. Scorpio moonsault misses. Scorpio up and he puts Sabu up top and climbs up with him. Scorpio gets pushed down and Sabu comes off with a somersault body attack. Sabu pushes him to the floor and then hits a pile driver. Sabu puts Scorpio through a table. 911 puts them both back in the ring and Sabu covers 1, 2….Scorpio kicks out! Scorpio with a float over DDT and Sabu makes it look sick. Scorpio hooks both legs but can still only get 2. Sabu takes out the legs of Scorpio and Paul E holds a chair over the face of Scorpio as Sabu hits a sling shot leg drop from the apron to get the win in 18.35.

Terry Funk vs. Cactus Jack, ref Jim Molineaux
HAHA Funk comes to the ring and gets on the mic and says he forgot to put on his knee pads so he leaves to get them. Why they left this in the home video is beyond me. Cactus gets the mic and says there has been too much violence tonight. Cactus has learned to appreciate family entertainment and the fans need a scientific match right. Jack wants to give the fans that match and they shake hands. Cactus then says he has a lot of respect for Funk and it’s going to hurt him to have to kick his ass. They shake again and we get our bell. Cactus backs Terry into the ropes and chops him. Funk returns back and throws Jack to the floor. Funk picks up a piece of broken table from the previous match and nails Jack. Into the crowd they go. Back in the ring Jack charges Funk but Funk moves and Jack gets hung up in the ropes. Joey worries that he is going to lose another ear. Public Enemy hit the ring and attack Funk. PE try to throw Jack on top but he doesn’t want to make the cover. PE attack Jack now and put him on top. Johnny Grunge makes the count but Jack rolls off at 2. They beat on him some more and then force him to make the cover as Rocco Roc makes the 3 count. PE raise Jack’s hand but he again pulls away from them. The fans HATED this finish. Things broke down at around the 5 minutes mark. Cactus and Funk leave together with pieces of table as they go looking for PE. Back from the locker room the two teams come brawling to the ring. Funk nails Roc with frying pans and nails him with a piledriver as Jack hits the double arm DDT on Grunge. Terry covers PE at Jack counts the 3. Funk tells the fans to throw chairs into the ring and immediately about 100 chairs come flying into the ring. After a few seconds Roc raises his hands through the chairs like a Super Shredder. Grunge gets on the mic and tells Jack and Funk that they don’t know what they’ve started. The PE run in sucked but the whole end with the chairs and Grunge on the mic afterwards was awesome. Although the fans are dicks.

My thoughts on the show…
This show was kinda bad. Mikey Jason was good and then the ending happened. Wonder what they are going to say about it on TV. Sabu Scorpio I wanted to love but it was so choppy. I know I shouldn’t have expected anything but spots but I did anyway and was let down. Everything else sucked but the very very end is worth seeing.

The “OH MY GOD!” Review: ECW TV 7/19/94 – 8/9/94 (4 Episodes)

TV 1994-07-19 (Matches taped 1994-07-15 at ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pa)

Heavyweight: “The Franchise” Shane Douglas
TV: Mikey Whipwreck
Tag: Public Enemy

This episode has audio of a basketball game on it in the beginning. You can still hear the ECW audio though.

Things open up with highlights of the Tommy Dreamer and Heavyweight Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas feud. VERY brief clips of their match from July 8th at the Farmers Market in Montgomeryville, Pa are shown.

Opening video.

TV Champion Mikey Whipwreck vs. Sandman (w/ Woman), ref John Finnegan
Sandman muscles Mikey back into the corner and chops the shit out of him. Sandman throws Mikey to the floor. Mikey gets up and bumps into Woman. Woman pushes him and Mikey makes like he’s going to nail her. Sandman goes out and beats on Mikey. Back in the ring Woman comes in and canes Mikey getting Sandman DQed in 3.39. A bunch of guys come out to break it up including “Ironman” Tommy Cairo and they all get caned to death. Tommy Dreamer hits the ring and gets the upper hand. Woman tries to cane Dreamer but misses and hits Sandman. Dreamer goes after Woman and kiss her instead of punching her. Sandman gets up and canes Dreamer about 57 times. Woman lights a cigarette and and says “Wow” into the camera. Sandman gets on the mic and yells that you don’t lay your hands on Woman.

We come back from commercial and see a reply of so much of what just happened. Woman tells Sandman not to be to mad at Dreamer cause the kiss wasn’t to bad. Sandman is pissed because now he has to satisfy Woman tonight. Not sure why you would get pissed about that.

Terry Funk (w/ Dory Funk) vs. Kyle Sheara, ref Jim Molineaux
Sheara with a nice showing early on taking it to Funk. Funk though fights back and brings it to the floor and nails Sheara with a chair. Back in the ring Funk locks in a spinning toe hold and gets the win in 4.11.

Cactus Jack says that Sabu made a big mistake because he has forced Jack to get into shape. Jack wants another fix of Sabu as he is high on the pain. Both ECW and WCW have told him no but he doesn’t care. Cactus tells Paul E Dangerously to get Sabu to agree to the match.

Tag Team Champions Public Enemy talk about all the teams they have beaten since coming to ECW 8 months ago. We get a bunch of finishes from PE beating a bunch of teams with the song “Slam” by Onyx playing.

Shane Douglas says Tommy Dreamer doesn’t even belong in the same sport as him. Douglas wants Dreamer to show him the respect he deserves and to make it to the ring if he can after the beating he took from Sandman

Heavyweight Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas (w/ Mr. Hughes) vs. Tommy Dreamer, ref John Finnegan
Douglas on the mic and he wonders if Dreamer will make it to the ring for the match. Douglas says no one will come to Philly to face him. Not Hogan nor Flair. Douglas wants someone to come to the right to face him. The ref says that Dreamer as 10 seconds to come to the ring or he will be counted out. Dreamer comes down but ref Jim Molineaux attempts to stop him. Dreamer into the ring and Douglas goes right after him. Dreamer comes back with a belly to back but is too hurt from his beat down earlier to cover. Double clothesline and both guys are down. They go to the floor and Dreamer nails Douglas with a chair a few times. Hughes helps Douglas out and nails Dreamer with the chair now. Back in the ring and it’s all Douglas. Douglas nails a piledriver but doesn’t go for a cover. Douglas beats on Dreamer and the ref calls for the bell in 7.52 awarding the match to Douglas. Douglas and Hughes continue the beat down after the match.

My thoughts on the show…
I always enjoy when they run a story through the whole show. Dreamer gets the beat down to start and it brings us all the way through the end. I’m guessing we are moving to a Dreamer Sandman feud.

We get our first footage from Heatwave to appear on TV as we open the show with 911 giving chokeslams galore during the world title match. We then get video of all the chokeslams he has given since entering the company. Paul E Dangerously talks about how dialing 911 means results get done. Paul E hypes the next Arena show coming in August.

Tazmaniac vs. Hack Meyers, ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
Hack attacks as Taz slides into the ring but Taz quickly throws him to the floor. Into the crowd and Taz beats on Hack some more. Back in the ring Hack fights back and gives Taz a guillotine leg drop on the apron. Taz reverses a corner whip and as Hack stumbles out he gets caught her a release german and pinned in 2.30.

We go to what happened last week after the TV Title Match between Tommy Dreamer and Sandman. Sandman is backstage with Woman and he says Dreamer didn’t need to touch Woman and get the beating he got he could have just given Sandman $20 bucks and gotten Peaches. Tag Team Champions Public Enemy page Sandman for his services as Sandman threatens Dreamer with the beating of a lifetime.

On Saturday August 13th at the Arena 911 takes on Mr. Hughes, 2 Cold Scorpio wrestles Sabu, Dreamer takes on Sandman and Jason goes after TV Champion Mikey Whipwreck and this match can’t be stopped by DQ!

Tommy Dreamer talks about being NWA rookie of the year and getting trained by the Funks. He says after he takes out Sandman he’s going after Woman then blows her a kiss.

Bad Breed vs. Don E Allen & Joel Hartgood, ref John Finnegan
Joey says Bad Breed has had some recently brawls with PE on house shows. The Rottens hit the ring and go right after their opponents. Ian hits a belly to back and clothesline on Allen. Axl comes in with a splash. Hartgood tags in and Ian slams him down with a dominator. Ian with a full nelson suplex and a nasty belly to back. Ian goes to the second rope and hits a splash. Axl with a reverse atomic drop than Ian comes off the top with a bulldog. Doomsday device gets the win in 5.07. After the match the Rottens each hit power bombs. This was an awesome squash.

Jason, Rockin’ Rebel & Chad Austin vs. Hack Meyers, Don E Allen & Dino Sendoff, ref Jim Molineaux (1994-07-22)
Hack and Rebel start off and Hack beats down Rebel in the corner. Hack nails a clothesline and we clip to Hack and Rebel getting tagged back in. Hack agains beats on Rebel. Jason passes something to Rebel and he nails Hack and tags Jason. Jason comes in the ring and gets the pin. Jason then nails Sendoff with a DDT. 1.42 was shown. We learn that Hack and Rebel has been signed for August 13th.

Jason music video to “What a Man” by Salt-N-Peppa.

A highlight video of Tag Team Champions Public Enemy is shown.

“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka & The Pitbulls (w/ Hunter Q Robbins III & Jason) vs. The Funk Brothers & Tommy Dreamer, ref Jim Molineaux
We are joined in progress and Dreamer is in the ring with Pitbull 1 and he he tags in Pitbull 2 and they beat on Dreamer. Dropkick by Pitbull 2. Snuka comes in and he stays on Dreamer hitting a fist drop from the second buckle. Eventually everyone hits the ring and they all brawl. Snuka goes up top and hits a superfly splash after the Pitbulls hit a double suplex. Dory Funk though comes in and makes the save. Snuka holds Dreamer as the Pitbulls charge for a double clothesline but Dreamer moves and Snuka gets nailed. Dreamer covers and gets the pin on Snuka. Afterwards Robbins comes in and berates Snuka. Robbins tells Snuka is his a monkey and nails breaks his cane over Snuka’s back. Robbins makes like he’s going to nail Snuka again for about 45 seconds and when he finally does swing Snuka blocks it and his a headbutt. A back breaker and superfly splash follow and hopefully this ends Robbins days in ECW. The Pitbulls return to the ring with a chair and attack Snuka. Tazmaniac hits the ring and goes after the Pitbulls. Snuka and Tazmaniac get rid of the Pitbulls and then back into each other. They turn and look like they are going to go after each other. Snuka helps helps Tazmaniac give the superfly hand signal and they hug. Joey calls it a passing of the torch. 3.53 of the match was shown.

Heavyweight Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas, Mr. Hughes and Angel are backstage and Douglas talks about 911 chokeslamming them all. Hughes talks about how he is going to face 911 on the 13th of August.

My thoughts on the show…
I really loved the Bad Breed squash and the aftermath of the six man was pretty good to. I’m really hopeful we won’t see Robbins around anymore and it almost seems like this is the end of Snuka’s run in ECW. Him joining with Robbins seemed to come out of no where and now it looks like they did it just so they could turn him face for him to leave a few months later. I assume they will book a tag match with him and Tazmaniac against the Pitbulls on his way out.

TV 1994-08-02 (Matches taped 1994-07-15 at ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pa & 1994-07-22 at Farmer’s Market in Montgomeryville, Pa)

Mr. Hughes talks about running through everyone he has faced since coming to ECW. We see clips of Hughes’ time in ECW so far. Including the finish to his match against Johnny Gunn at November to Remember 93 which until now had been unseen. He ends it by talking about 911 and how he laid his hands on Heavyweight Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas and Angel. Angel comes out and tells Paul E Dangerously to stay out of her way. This went on for over 12 minutes. It wasn’t horrible though.

Opening video.

Bad Breed are hitting the ring but we cut to a special bulletin and Joey Styles is telling us that Terry Funk will take on Cactus Jack on August 13th.

Bad Breed vs. Dino Sendoff & Joel Hartgood, ref Jim Molineaux
Ian Rotten hits a double arm DDT on Hartgood followed by the doomsday device. .23 seconds was shown. I can’t confirm that Sendoff was the partner in the match as he is never shown on screen.

Added to the Arena show on the 13th is “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Tazmaniac taking on the Pitbulls as well as Hack Meyers going up against Rockin’ Rebel. The show has been officially given the name Hardcore Heaven. We get a Cactus Jack Terry Funk hype video.

TV Champion Mikey Whipwreck vs. Steven Richards, ref Jim Molineaux (1994-07-22)
Richards takes over on Mikey and gets a 2 after a leg drop. Suplex for 2 but Richards gets up from the cover. Mikey comes back with a flying clothesline but then Richards ducks a back elbow and hits a super kick as Mikey turns around. Mikey tossed to floor and beat on. Richards with a power bomb back in the ring but he doesn’t go for a cover. Mikey gets sent into a few corners. Mikey gets his feet up on the last one and then goes up top and lands a cross body. Jason is late on a run in and the ref has to stop counting so Jason can get in the ring and cause a DQ in 5.33.

Jason is in the locker room and he talks about what happened with Snuka, Tazmaniac and the Pitbulls last week.

Pitbulls (w/ Jason) vs. Phi Delta Slam, ref John Finnegan
Pitbull 1 and Bluto start off. Bluto with some arm drags to control the early parts off the match. PDS make a few takes back and forth. The Pitbulls eventually take over on Dday. Bluto gets a small package on Pitbull 2 for what would have been a 3 count but the ref is distracted. Bluto goes for a crucifix but Pitbull 2 hangs on and drops back with a crushing samoan drop. The Pitbulls debut the super bomb next for the win in 8.30.

Back to Jason and he says tonight he has a match and he will show everyone what he’s going to do to Mikey on the 13th.

Jason (w/ Chad Austin, Rockin Rebel & The Pitbulls) vs. Keith Sheara, ref John Finnegan
As the ref checks Jason for weapons his boys beat on Sheara. Sheara is out and Jason covers for the win in .37.

Paul E Dangerously is in locker room and he hypes the Sabu 2 Cold Scorpio and 911 Mr. Hughes matches. Paul E rips into Angel and calls her a street walker.

My thoughts on the show…
That Pitbulls match went on for WAY to long. Richards and Mikey had a decent match. Overall nothing on here is necessary viewing.

TV Champion Mikey Whipwreck and Jason feud video starts us off. Mikey is backstage and he says he has never won a fight in his life and that he probably couldn’t beat any man, woman, child or pet on earth but he is sure he can take out Jason.

Opening video.

Bad Breed vs. The Spiders, ref Jim Molineaux
Joey tells us that Bad Breed gets a title match this Saturday at Hardcore Heaven. Ian Rotten with a plancha out of the ring. Ian with a corner whip and drop kick in the corner. Spider 1 tags in and hits a drop kick on Axl from the top rope. Axl though comes back and hits a belly to back suplex and tags Ian back in. Ian with another corner whip and he charges but gets back body dropped to the floor. Spider 2 comes over and hits a suplex on the floor and then Spider 1 hits a plancha and comes off the top with a double axe handle back in the ring. The Spiders double team Ian for a bit. Ian comes back though and hits a double arm DDT and tags Axl. All hell breaks loose. Spider hits a superrana on Ian. Axl on the floor avoids a cross body off the apron and slides in the ring to break up the pin. In reality he was late getting in the ring and the ref stopped counting just like in the TV Title match last week. Doomsday device ends it in 6.33. Another fun Bad Breed match.

Tag Team Champions Public Enemy talk about how there will be no strike in ECW like in baseball. This Saturday it’s going to be a Baseball Brawl!

Sandman vs. Ray Odyssey ref John Finnegan (1994-07-22)
Woman again is barred from ringside. Seems like that only happens when they head to the Farmer’s Market. Ray with the advantage early on. Sandman though cuts him off with a back elbow and high hanging vertical suplex. Sandman takes it to the floor and goes to work on Ray with a chair. Back in the ring Sandman spikes Ray down with a piledriver. Back to the floor Sandman goes for a suplex but Ray blocks it and hits one of his own. Ray with a plancha and he hammers away on Sandman. Back in the ring Ray comes off with a missile drop and pounds on Sandman in the corner. The ref gets to close and catches an elbow as Ray pulls his fist back to nail Sandman. Ray hits his finisher the whip out which is a second rope vaderbomb. Ray goes to wake up the ref and Sandman gets the cane nails Ray with it and gets the pin in 7.28. I hate that finish. Why the fuck did the ref just walk into an elbow like that. Sandman continues the beating after the match.

We go back to three weeks when the trouble between Sandman and Tommy Dreamer started. Sandman is with Woman backstage and Sandman says it’s time for Dreamer to taste the singapore cane.

Funk/Cactus hype video. Not sure why this match is happening as there has been no backstory to this.

Chad Austin (w/ Jason) vs. Damien Stone, ref Jim Molineaux
Stone turns Austin inside out with a clothesline. Austin comes back though and hits a clothesline of his own. Austin with a corner whip and h charges but Stone moves and Austin goes through the ropes to the floor. Back in the ring Austin misses a 450 splash and Stone stomps away. Joey suggests that this could be a match of the year candidate. He must not have watched a lot of wrestling so far this year. Austin ducks a line and hits a float over DDT for the win in 3.41.

Paul E Dangerously is backstage with 911. Paul E hypes the card for Saturday and talks about how he found 911 at a biker bar in NYC. Paul E talks about all the people in ECW that have gone up and down at the hands of 911. Mr. Hughes, Heavyweight Champion Shane Douglas and Angel are backstage and Hughes says he is taking 911 up and down with the sidewalk slam. Back to Paul and 911 and 911 picks up the camera man in a choke slam to show Hughes what’s going to happen to him this Saturday night.

My thoughts on the show…
Three enjoyable matches this week with some good hype for Hardcore Heaven. This is worth checking out.

The Shockmaster Fred Ottman Talks Quitting WCW Because of Eric Bischoff:

Working with Hulk Hogan and their relationship:

Hulk is just awesome. For me coming into there (WWF) and them to give me a gimmick (Tugboat) and say we decided we are going to put you with the Hulk. I was nervous, putting me with him is like the Midas touch. Tagging with him and even when I turned on him, it got me over better as a heel when I turned on the Hulkster. He was always a gentleman and great to work with and it was incredible. We shared many adventures on the road. I see him occasionally now when he trains over at (Bushwacker) Luke’s gym in Clearwater. He is a super guy and it was an honor to be able to work with him and work against him.

Turning heel and teaming with Earthquake (John Tenta):

They came to me out of the blue and asked me how I felt about tagging up with “Quake” and even though I thought I was doing real good enough right now, it didn’t seem like a fairly long run. When I wasn’t working I was at the curtain watching other guys work. Watching different moves and watching how they worked even as far as waiting our turn to do interviews. When you have the monitors there for me it was always a great help. So when they asked me about Quake I couldn’t imagine us together, it would be like a couple of giant animals or huge dinosaurs. But the fact that we could move and not just lumber around, we both bump good and were able to do standing dropkicks. Being with Quake it was easy on the head. I didn’t have to worry about him. I was blessed to be in there with Hulk and when they shot me in with Quake and put us with Jimmy Hart they never had to worry about us. A lot of guys on the road get into a lot of mischief.

Road life during that era:

On the road we were working 300 plus days in a year at that time, but my entire career I worked like that. Most of the territories I was working in did that. Especially when I got up there (WWF) they added in personal appearances, sometimes you had double-shots working twice in one day. You would fly to Europe or Japan, come back and get right on the road and start hitting TV. When you were home, you were home for a day, maybe two, maybe three sometimes. You have to realize when you are on the road that’s what you signed up for with that kind of business.

Winning the WWF Tag Team Championship and being a top heel team:

It was awesome. The first time I went to Japan and we ran the Tokyo Dome, we were booked against The Road Warriors. We were lucky having the management we had. The angles we were doing up there were really good. It was a great time to be there for me. I also couldn’t have had a better partner, it was outstanding.

His Departure from The WWF:

I went down to WCW for a brief time when we wound up doing The Shockmaster deal. When I had initially left, I had put together some businesses in Key West, Florida and just before we opened my brother in law was shot and killed here in Tampa. That took me off the road. I gave my notice and about three to four weeks afterwards and then I left there. I was out from around the business. I had a lot of money tied up, I had a house in Tampa. It took me off the road for a while and I ended up a year and a half or so after all that went down to WCW.

Fred Ottman also discusses The Shockmaster angle, working for Eric Bischoff, being a huge nerd, how he got into the business, his Memphis run as U.S. Steele and his outstanding relationship with John Tenta.

Sting Not Appearing At WWE SummerSlam After All?, Speculation Among WWE Talents Backstage

0

Source: PWInsider Elite

While Sting has been expected to appear and actually wrestle at next month’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view, word is that as of this afternoon he is not scheduled to make any kind of appearance that night.

There was some speculation among WWE talents that Sting may team with Stephen Amell to face Stardust and possibly The Miz, with the idea that both Amell and Sting are “vigilantes.”. There has also been talk that Sting would team with Roman Reigns to face The Wyatt Family but PWInsider says that is all speculation as WWE is not planning on using Sting at SummerSlam as of late this afternoon.

Sting will be in New York City that weekend to make the SummerSlam Experience signing appearance but apparently WWE will not be using him at SummerSlam after all.
