Ronda Rousey Comments For The First Time Since Being Knocked Out, Addresses Retirement Rumors

0

Ronda Rousey exited the cage without being interviewed following her surprise UFC 193 loss to Holly Holm Saturday night. The former champion also was absent from the post-fight press conference, as she was transported to a local hospital.

Rousey made a post on Instagram Sunday evening, commenting for the first time since losing her championship. Rousey put a kibosh on any retirement rumors, but said that she’s fine and will return.

“I just wanted to thank everyone for the love and support. I appreciate the concerns about my health, but I’m fine. As I had mentioned before, I’m going to take a little bit of time, but I’ll be back,” the post said.

Many had speculated that Rousey would be a part of a huge fight at UFC 200 in July, whether it be against longtime foe Cris “Cyborg” Justino, or her new rival in Holly Holm. Dana White noted that plans had changed due to the fact that Rousey lost.

As Rousey mentioned, she was always expected to take time away from the cage following this fight. She’s set to film a movie in the spring, which also puts her WrestleMania status in question.

The latest word on Daniel Bryan’s WWE status is that company officials were still waiting on the results of a third doctor’s findings in regards to Bryan’s health and if he should be put back in the ring.

As we’ve noted, WWE’s Dr. Joseph Maroon ruled that Bryan should not wrestle again due to the number of concussions he’s suffered. Bryan later got a doctor that works with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals to test him and his brain tested above average for his age. That doctor cleared him to wrestle.

If the third doctor’s tests have been done, The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that results are being kept secret but they could be back in as Vince McMahon has reportedly been going back-and-forth on Bryan’s status.

Ronda Rousey Addresses Claims Of Domestic Abuse, Says It Was In Self Defense

In the weeks leading to her fight, Ronda Rousey has had several distractions in camp. Between her boyfriend Travis Browne outing their relationship, to her mother trashing her coach, to that very coach filing for bankruptcy, the world’s most recognizable MMA fighter hasn’t had the smoothest go of it this month.

Things didn’t get easier when major media outlets picked up a story from her book My Fight/Your Fight, where she claims to have beaten up an ex-boyfriend that she caught snapping nude pictures of her without her consent. According to Rousey, she tried to leave, and the boyfriend prevented her from doing so.

You can read her passage about the physicality that followed below:

“I punched him in the face with a straight right, then a left hook. He staggered back and fell against the door,” Rousey wrote. “… I slapped him with my right hand. He still wouldn’t move. Then I grabbed him by the neck of his hoodie, kneed him in the face and tossed him aside on the kitchen floor.

Rousey addressed the issues when speaking to media prior to this weekend’s UFC 193 event.

“Legally, if somebody blocks your exit, it’s considered kidnapping,” Rousey said to reporters. “I was in that situation before when I got in a fight at a movie theater and my exit was blocked and people wouldn’t let me out. Legally, you cannot do that. It’s considered a self-defense scenario, so if someone is blocking you in an apartment and you can’t leave, you’re entitled to defend yourself and find a way out.”

Rousey also stated in her book that even after the altercation, the boyfriend followed her to her car and jumped in her passenger seat. She pulled him out of the car and left.

“If you’re trying to get into your car and leave and they’re grabbing your steering wheel and saying that you can’t leave, that’s technically you being kidnapped and you can defend yourself in any way it’s necessary,” said Rousey.

Domestic abuse is a heavily covered issues, and one that piqued the interests of both fans and foes of Rousey because of outspoken she’s been against Floyd Mayweather for his past. After winning the ESPY for Best Fighter this year, Rousey said “I wonder how Floyd feels being beat by a woman for once.”

Rousey also said during the scrum that the incident regarding nude photos is what motivated her to do ESPN’s Body Issue, so that the photos would come out on her own terms.

According to the Wrestling Observer, WWE Developmental coach Billy Gunn, real name Kip Sopp, has been fired by the WWE after failing a test for performance enhancing drugs at a powerlifting competition in Florida on July 25th.

His drug test at the competition came up with a 37-1 testosterone/epitestosterone ratio, above the 4-1 limit, and he was suspended from powerlifting for 4 years. We’ll have more on this situation throughout the day.

The 52-year old Sopp had been working as a trainer at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. He’s been seen on WWE Network’s Breaking Ground program, in addition to this year’s season of Tough Enough. Last week, Gunn served as a special guest referee during an NXT live event.
