Prime Time Wrestling 10/28/86

Ladies and gentleman I give to you the greatest wrestling team ever, Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan.

Match #1: “The King” Harley Race v. Corporal Kirchner:  From the Boston Garden 9/6/86. Kirchner backdrops Race early on and works over the King’s arm. Race uses some leverage and throws the Cpl. to the floor. Harley nails a head butt to Kirchner o the floor. The King then suplexes Cpl. on the concrete. Race suplexes Kirchner into the ring but misses a diving head butt from the middle rope. Kirchner comes back and sends Harley backwards over the top rope to the outside. Harley tries to come back in via the top rope but Cpl. presses him off. Kirchner misses a middle rope forearm shot himself. The two crack heads but Harley gets the advantage with the harder cranium. Cpl. reverses a suplex and locks on the sleeper. he King gets in a low blow for the break. Harley gets a piledriver for two. The Corporal & Race brawl on the outside for a moment & come back inside where the King gets a clothesline on Kirchner. Cpl. goes for something, maybe a splash and catches Harley’s knees in his ribs. Both men spill to the floor yet again. This time back inside Kirchner tries for a cross body but can barely stand on the top rope. Anyway, he hits the move and literally pulls Harley Race over on top as Gorilla calls it “momentum”. Race gets the win at 13:40. Race & Kirchner brawl afterwards and the King levels the corporal with a chair shot. Rating: Good match, NO LIE! **

Match #2: Sika (w/The Wizard) v. Jerry Allen: In Progress from Boston Gardens 10/4/86. Iaukea (The Wiz) gets on the mic for a moment. Our referee is Rita Marie. Sika is working over Jerry Allen while The Wizard yells things out very loudly. Allen fires back with a series of rights and a dropkick. Allen misses a charge and Sika drops a head butt for the win at 4:16.  Rating: Ummmm…DUD

– Ken Resnick interviews Roddy Piper. Hot Rod talks about Adonis, Orton & Muraco. Really good interview, as usual!

Match #3: The Islanders v. Jimmy Jack Funk & Mr. X: From the Gardens 10/4/86. X is of course Danny Davis. The Islanders take turns working over both heels. Tama runs off the ropes right into Funk’s knee and the heels take control. Jimmy Jack gets a slingshot and and a back breaker on Tama for two. Funk gets a shoulder breaker and a middle rope fist drop for two. Tama tries a sunset flip on Funk but X breaks it up. Tama reverses a suplex but X stops Tama from making the tag. Tama & JJ hit a double clothesline and X & Haku get hot tags. Haku eventually slams X and Tama leaps from the top with a splash for the win at 12:14. Rating: Good little undercard tag match, *

Match #4: Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff (w/Fred Blassie) v. George Steele & Cpl. Kirchner: Okay, I can deal with one Kirchner match, but two?!? This match was taped from early 1986. Sheik attacks Kirchner to start and applies an abdominal stretch. The corporal gets out of it but is then hammered by Volkoff. Nikolai misses a charge and the Cpl. tags in the Animal. Steele bites both heels as they try for clotheslines. he heels double team the Animal and take control. Sheik applies the camel clutch but the Cpl. breaks it up. Kirchner gets the hot tag but is quickly cut off by Nikolai’s boot. The Animal’s back in with some biting and thumbing to the throat. Cpl. is again quickly tagged in and gets a small package which the Sheik breaks up. All 4 men are in the ring as Kirchner gets a Samoan Drop on Volkoff. Sheik loads up his boot and nails Cpl. with it while the refs distracted by Steele. The Iranian places Volkoff on top of Kirchner for the win at 7:36. Rating: It was there, not unwatchable 1/2*

– In a totally unnecessary segment, we are “At Home with Hillbilly Jim” who is singing to “Granny”. Big Jim shows us how he exercises & wrestles in his house. WTF was that about? Wow.

Match #5: Mr. X v. Rudy Diamond: Boston Gardens 6/27/86. Not sure why we get two Kirchner matches and now two Mr. X bouts on the same show. X again is Danny Davis, Diamond is wrestling barefoot. X powders out early on but comes in and takes control. X misses a leg drop and Rudy takes over. X reverses an Irish whip and hits a flying clothesline on Rudy for the win at 5:15. Rating: Nothing much here, DUD

– Ken Resnick interviews the Dream Team, who are complaining about a recent SNME match they had with the British Bulldogs.

Match #6: King Kong Bundy v. Junkyard Dog: Boston Gardens 6/27/86: Bundy drops the dog early but misses an elbow drop. JYD gains control nailing several head butts while on all fours. KKB takes a breather on the outside. Bundy tries again and the duo trade blows until Bundy drops the Dog. KKB tries a splash but the JYD gets out of the way. Dog tries a head butt, but he too misses. Bundy & the Dog trade blows for the next several minutes. The Dog gets frustrated and grabs his dog chain. JYD goes to use the chain but referee Danny Davis grabs it. The Dog refuses to let go and uses the chain to hip toss Danny across the ring. Davis DQ’s the Dog and claims KKB the winner at 7:21. After the bout JYD hits his THUMP powerslam on referee Danny Davis and chains him up and drags him to the back.  Rating: The ending is better than the match, 1/4*

Final Thoughts: Not a totally bad show but I don’t understand why not one, but two wrestlers were featured more than once on this episode.

Match of the Night: Harley Race v. Cpl. Kirschner

Video Review: WWF Prime Time Wrestling 10/21/86

Prime Time Wrestling 10/21/86

Your Hosts are Gorilla Mushroom…I mean Monsoon, and Bobby “The Weasel” Heenan.

Match #1: Don Muraco (w/Mr. Fuji) v. Cpl. Kirschner: This match is from the Maple Leaf Gardens 9/28/86. Muraco is sporting a really nasty looking beard by this point. Kirschner takes Muraco down but misses a forearm drop from the middle rope. The Magnificent one takes over with a swinging neckbreaker. Muraco gets a suplex for two then feeds Kirschner to Fuji on the outside. Fuji works over Kirschner quite a bit before Muraco pulls him back inside. Don works over Kirschner for a while until the Corporal ducks a clothesline and hits Muraco with one of his own. Kirschner atomic drops Muraco to the floor. As Kirchner suplexes Muraco back into the ring, as they land on the mat Muraco rocks his legs back and hooks Kirschner into a small package for the pin at 8:52. Rating: A lot of down time during this match makes it a DUD

Match #2: IC Champ Greg Valentine (w/Jimmy Hart) v. Junkyard Dog: This is obviously an older bout as Valentine is the IC Champion. I believe this match is from the Meadowlands, somewhere around March of 1985. Dog goes to work on Hammer nailing head butts, driving Valentine to the floor. Back in JYD gets a wristlock on Greg. Not much happening as we go to a commercial break. Upon return from commercials JYD & Valentine collide, knocking one another down. Valentine is up first and tries for the figure four but JYD kicks him off and right into Jimmy Hart who was standing on the apron. The Dog rolls up the Hammer for a two count, an inside cradle gets 2 as well. Jimmy Hart pops back up on the apron and JYD tries to drag Hart into the ring. With the Dog distracted, Valentine hits a knee from behind and covers while Jimmy Hart holds the Dog’s feet down for the win at 9:17. But wait the referee has noticed Hart was holding JYD’s legs down as the heels head to the back. This causes the ref to restart the match and count Valentine out at 10:30. Winner by count out the JYD, this was also similar to the finish at WrestleMania. Rating: An okay little match 3/4*

– Ken Resnick talks to the Killer Bees, Brunzell is wearing the Bee Mask. They make buzzing sounds. Yes, they BUZZ. That’s about all.

Match #3: Paul Roma & Special Delivery Jones v. The Menace & Jim Haley: This was taped somewhere between June & September of 1986, during which time Roma & Jones frequented as a team. Roma & SD work over the Menace, Jim Haley comes in, ditto on him. Haley tries some right hands on Jones but SD no sells it to see what it feels like to be on the other end of a match for once. The faces work over Haley’s arm and then Roma hits a powerslam out of nowhere at 3:46. Rating: A squash match which shows there are different levels of jobbers. DUD

– In the studio, Gorilla asks what Heenan stuck under Orndorff’s nose to get him to turn on Hogan. What indeed Gorilla.

Match #4: Nick Kiniski v. Steve Lombardi: This is from MSG 9/22/86. Lombardi is the future Brooklyn Brawler, Nick is the son of former NWA Champion Gene Kiniski. Nick Kiniski gets some basic baby face moves early on and works on Lombardi’s arm. Lombardi gets the break and Kiniski tries for a reverse body block but no one is home. Steve gets some basic heel cheat moves in i.e. eyes across the rope. Lombardi with a chin lock and Kiniski fights out, only to have Steve throw him over the top rope to the floor. Back inside Lombardi misses a charge into the corner and Kiniski is back up. Nick gets a backdrop, hiptoss & a dropkick in. Lombardi reverses an Irish whip but Nick leapfrogs over a backdrop attempt by Steve and nails a German Suplex on Lombardi for the win at 8:59. Rating: Kiniski didn’t last that long, he just really didn’t adapt to the WWF way of things. Match was decent. 1/2*

– Ken Resnick is with Don Muraco. The Magnificent one has nothing good to say about Roddy Piper.

Piper’s Pit returns with an all new look, after a few weeks hiatus. This is due to Adonis, Muraco & Orton destroying his old set and injured Hot Rod. Piper’s guest is Jimmy Hart. What an IDIOT Hart must be to show up on Piper’s Pit, by himself, after what just recently went down. Hart comes baring gifts. Jimmy Hart gives Hot Rod a crutch, a Hawaiian Lei from Muraco, panties from Mr. Fuji, a pink cowboy hat and a Noose from Bob Orton. Piper in retort says he has a present for Hart. Piper ties Jimmy Hart up in a chair, sticks all of the gifts on Hart, pours a bottle of mouthwash in Jimmy’s mouth and makes him spit it into Orton’s cowboy hat. In closing Piper hops away on what was thought to be his “bad leg”.

– A segment entitled “Working out with Mr. Wonderful” is shown. It’s pretty much what it sounds like.

Match #5: Hulk Hogan & Junkyard Dog v. Terry & Hoss Funk (w/Jimmy Hart): Straight from the Boston Gardens 3/8/86. Hoss is Dory Jr. of course. JYD wraps the chain around Dory’s neck to start while Hogan takes a cheap shot to the fans approval. Hogan rams Terry into JYD’s head and the Funks spill to the floor. Dory gets bumped around by the Dog & in comes Terry who misses a charge. We get a weird spot that starts off as a crisscross but ends up with only the Funk Brothers both running the ropes, kinda funny. Dory whips Hogan into a buckle but Dog makes the save. Hogan goes to whip Dory into a corner and Terry makes the save, only Dory reversed and Terry accidentally saves the Hulkster. This is an old Midnights/RnR Express spot that looks great when done correctly. Terry’s crazy man comedy is some of the best. Hogan slams both Funks repeatedly. Hulk goes after Terry on the floor but is hit with a chair and the Funks take over…but not for long. Hogan no sells Terry’s punches and tags in the Dog. JYD is on fire until he misses a head butt and the heels finally take over, 8 minutes into the match. Terry makes some unwise moves, allowing JYD to tag in Hogan. The Hulkster goes nuts on the Funks and Terry is selling like whoa! The ref gets distracted with the Dog, allowing Terry to choke Hogan out with some tape. Hogan gets tossed to the floor and while the referee is distracted by Jimmy Hart, the Funks hang the JYD over the top rope. Hogan comes out of nowhere and clotheslines Terry while he was hanging the JYD for the pin at 11:35. JYD puts on a Hulk Hogan Halloween mask and the duo pose…SCARY! Rating: Finish was kinda outta nowhere, but it was a decent Hogan/JYD match **

Final Thoughts: With thousands of hours of footage, I didn’t care for the fact that there were two JYD matches on the show, but with the good come the bad. JYD’s matches were actually the best matches on the show, with help from his opponents. Match of the Night: Hogan & JYD v. The Funks

Prime Time Wrestling (10/14/86)

– And now your hosts Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. All Matches are from the Maple Leaf Gardens 9/28/86.

Match #1: “Cowboy” Frankie Lane v. Barry O: Bitter Barry O is one of the guys who exposed the business and the brother of Cowboy Bob Orton, uncle of Randy. Frankie Lane is a popular Canadian star and worked on a lot of the WWF’s shows up north. Orton looks to be jacked up a good 25 pounds here, and still didn’t make it, even with the roids. A lot of mat work and stalling by both men. Orton hits a side slam out of nowhere for the win at 5:55. Rating: This match is one of many reasons why Barry O never “made it”. DUD

Match #2: “Iron” Mike Sharpe v. Sivi Afi: Tons of back & forth action, one of Afi’s better matches, and Sharpe’s for that matter. Sharpe gets tied in the ropes and Sivi charges but catches a boot. Iron Mike sends Afi to the floor and into the guardrail. Sivi trips up Sharpe and posts his nuts in the corner. Afi back inside with an atomic drop and a headbutt low blow for a two count. Sivi gets a Vaderbomb for two. Afi gets a Russia leg sweep on Sharpe and throws him to the floor. Mike regroups but Afi hits a cross body for two. Sharpe comes back and tries a splash but lands on Sivi’s knees. Afi covers for two. Sivi goes to work on Sharpe as the 15 minute time limit expires. Sharpe attacks after the bout but Afi sends him packing. Rating: Not as bad as you’d think. *1/4

– Ken Resnick interviews the Honky Tonk Man. Honky’s still a face at this point but seems very uncomfortable playing the part. The gimmick just doesn’t work as a face, at least back then. After the interview Heenan responds to comments Honky Tonk Man made about him.

Match #3: Jose Luis Rivera v. Mr. X: Mr. X is referee Danny Davis with really bad acne on his back, more commonly known as “Backne”. No wonder he wore a shirt when he did the Dangerous gimmick. Jose got a decent push as Mac Rivera earlier in his WWF tenure. Jose is also well known as one half of the late 1980’s team, the Conquistadors. X works over Jose as we join this match in progress. X charges into a knee by Rivera and Jose hits a quick dropkick from the middle rope for the win in 2:58. Rating: Only 3 minutes of the match were shown, just as well. DUD

Match #4: Tiger Chung Lee v. Jerry Allen: Allen has just entered the WWF at this point. Lee has control of Allen and works him over sooooo sloooooowly. Tiger throws Allen out onto the ramp. Jerry gets to his feet and Lee goes to powerslam him back into the ring but Allen turns it into a small package for the win at 4:39. Rating: Allen got very little offense, didn’t show much, DUD

– Heenan keeps teasing the unveiling of his action figure, err sorry, DOLL. Gorilla is anxious to see. Bobby makes references to his secretary Miss Betty. Monsoon says Bobby should give Miss Betty a bonus in her check. Heenan says when he gives her bonuses it isn’t in cash. OH MY! LOL, that was a great line, Gorilla even laughs.

Match #5: Paul Roma v. Terry Gibbs: Wow, jobbers galore on this Maple Leaf show. 5 matches in and everyone of them has been Jobber v. Jobber matches, unless you wanna consider Sivi Afi a mid-carder…I don’t. Most of the first 5 minutes of this match is Roma in control with a side headlock. Gibbs breaks out and Roma misses a charge allowing Gibbs to take over. Terry throws Roma to the floor for a bit to catch his breath inside. Gibbs hits a gut buster but Roma still finds a way to come back. Paul gets a dropkick for two. Inside cradle and a backslide, both for 2 counts. Gibbs tries a roll up but Paul reverses it to get the win at 9:06. Rating: Not too much here 1/4*

– Ken Resnick is with The Wizard (King Curtis Iaukea). Listening to him talk I’m just waiting for him to yell SULLIVAN!!! He doesn’t say Sullivan, however he does point out that Sika & Kamala’s nostrils are 3 inches wide. Okay, umm? He also calls Hulk Hogan a rare white Bengal tiger, as he would do in WCW again in the 1990’s, and says his men are hunting for him.

Match #6: Mike Rotunda v. Iron Sheik (w/Slick & Nikolai Volkoff): We’re having a Russia/Iraq v. USA war in Canada of all places, makes sense doesn’t it. Sheik attacks Rotunda but Mike turns things around quickly and begins choking the Sheik with his own ring attire. Mike catches Sheik’s boot and hits an atomic drop and a slingshot into the corner. Sheik tries for a SOMERSAULT SENTAN but misses. Sheik gets in a backdrop and clothesline and feeds Rotunda out to his comrades. Gut wrench suplex and the Sheik applies the camel clutch. Mike finally makes it to the ring rope. The Iranian slaps on an abdominal stretch and tries for another suplex but Rotunda reverses it for two. Mike locks on a sleeper but Slick gets up on the apron and distracts the ref to allow Volkoff to attack Rotunda. Sheik covers but only gets a two count. Nikolai now distracts the ref and Slick goes to hit Rotunda with his cane but Mike ducks and Slick nails the Sheik instead. Mike covers for the win at 7:15. Rating: Not bad, Sheiky actually tried at times. *

– More Bobby Heenan doll shenanigans

Match #7: Hercules Hernandez v. Pedro Morales: In progress but only stalling to that point. Herc attacks Pedro early in the bout and mauls him for a while. Herc misses an elbow and Morales gets in a backdrop for two. Pedro misses a charge into the corner and Hercules hits a vertical suplex for the win in 4:00. The ref failed to notice Pedro’s foot was on the ropes during the cover.  Rating: Very short, coulda been good. 1/4*

– A clip is shown of the construction of the NEW Piper’s Pit.

Match #8: IC Champion Randy Savage (w/Elizabeth) v. George Steele: Savage attacks Steele before the bell but George comes back and throws Savage out to the floor. The Animal throws Macho into the guardrail and the ramp. Savage tries a clothesline but Savage catches Savage’s arm in his mouth. George bites o Savage until Macho nails George with a foreign object. Macho hits a flying double axe handle for two. Savage tries to use a hair but Steele takes it. While the ref is getting the chair from Steele, Savage nails the Animal with a foreign object yet again, and again, and again. Macho tries again but George grabs Savage’s arm and the referee sees the object. Steele begins to use the object on Macho and is DQ’d at 3:46. After the match the Animal slams Savage on the ramp. Rating: Really short, but Savage was always able to carry Steele to at least entertaining fights. 1/2*

– Heenan finally opens his package but finds every WWF doll except his. The show ends with a salty Bobby the Brain.

Final Thoughts: Too many jobber v. jobber matches for my taste. A lot of these guys were jobbers for a reason. Pretty nice seeing 8 matches from the same event though.

Match of the Night: Not much to pick from, I’ll go Rotunda v. Iron Sheik

Video Review: WWF Prime Time Wrestling 10/9/86

Prime Time Wrestling (10/9/86)

– Hosting as usual Monsoon & Heenan for this special Thursday night episode. All matches are from MSG 9/22/86.

Match #1: Billy Jack Haynes v. Bob Orton (w/Jimmy Hart): Jimmy Hart makes his first appearance as Cowboy’s manager. Haynes bumps Orton around to start and Cowboy takes a crazy bump to the floor. Back inside Haynes slows things down keeping Orton on the mat. Orton gets in a cheap shot and tries for a top rope Vader bomb but Haynes gets his knees up. Haynes hits a forearm from the middle rope but only gets two. Billy Jack locks in the full nelson but throws Orton down after being distracted by Jimmy Hart. Haynes sends Orton to the corner but runs into the Ace’s knee. Seconds later Orton trips up Haynes and covers him while hooking the tights to get the pin at 9:28. I saw way more of Billy Jack’s ass than I ever wanted to. Rating: Not too bad *1/2

– Heenan makes an excuse for Orton cheating, coming up with a reason why his foot was on the rope, only it wasn’t. Goes to show you they didn’t even watch the matches they were talking about. BUSTED BOBBY

Match #2: The Islanders v. The Moondogs: This is very early on in the Islanders time as a team. Tama is called TOMA and Haku hasn’t grown his beard in yet. Tama starts off with fancy foot work on Spot. Haku follows that up using his power on Rex. The Islanders begin to work over Spot at this point. Rex comes in and pitches Tama to the concrete. Back inside, Rex gets a version of the Hot shot on Tama and Spot throws Tama back onto the floor. MD Rex gets a delayed suplex on Tama but Haku breaks up the count. Spot works over Tama with a chinlock. Rex comes in and hits a powerslam for two. Tama gets the tag but the ref misses it and forces Haku out of the ring. Spot goes back to a chin lock on Tama. The Islanders get another tag but the ref misses it again and the Dogs hit a double clothesline on Tama. Rex goes for a middle rope splash but lands on Tama’s knees and Haku is FINALLY tagged in. Haku goes to town on the Dogs and sends Spot to the floor. Haku slams Rex and tags in Tama who nails a top rope splash for the win at 13:14. Rating: Some of the Moondogs best work, still only *

– Ken Resnick is standing by with Slick & The Iron Sheik. This is back when Slick had a creepy ghetto trash beard. Slick talks about his stable which he got from Fred Blassie.

– We get footage of Roddy Piper after having his Piper’s Pit destroyed and his leg injured. Piper, on a crutch completely demolishes the Flower Shop set with a baseball bat. Piper swings the bat so hard he actually breaks it. Ever notice how cheaply made the sets were, they just folded up, even the desks and such.

Match #3: “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal v. Jose Luis Rivera: In Progress. I believe this is Regal’s WWF debut. Regal was better known in the AWA as a former tag team champion with Jimmy Garvin. We start off with Regal working Rivera over with a chin lock. Jose Luis finally gets out and Regal goes for a backdrop. Rivera telegraphs it and nails Regal. Jose follows up with a dropkick for two. Regal takes a wild bump into the corner and Rivera hits a backdrop. Rivera gets two on a bodyslam. Rivera hits the ropes but runs into Regal’s belly to belly suplex for the finish at 4:38. Rating: It was In Progress, 3:00 of it was a chin lock. 1/4*

Match #4: SD Jones v. Mr. X: We join this match about 3 minutes in progress. X was played by Danny Davis.  X tries an elbow on SD but learns that Jones is black, and all black wrestlers have really hard heads. Both men miss charges into the corner. A nothing match, SD wins it with a standing headbutt off the middle rope at 5:06. Rating: Absolutely nothing, but short. DUD

Match #5: Tito Santana v. Harley Race (w/Bobby Heenan): Santana grounds Race to start but the King eventually pitches Tito to the floor. Harley goes to work on Tito outside. Race breaks the count and comes back out to get Tito, only Santana now works over the King on the outside. Santana flips Race back into the ring and stomps the hand of Bobby Heenan. Harley attempts a suplex, but Tito reverses it for a two count. Tito misses an elbow drop and the King gets a belly to belly suplex for two. The King nails a knee drop and an elbow drop for two. Race grabs a headlock and Tito sends him off. The two men crack heads and Race falls to the floor. Back inside Race tries for something off the top but Santana presses him off the top. Tito tries a figure four but Harley rakes the eyes. Race gets a piledriver but misses a head butt! Santana gets Race in a sleeper and puts Harley out momentarily. Heenan distracts Tito and Race is back up and tries for an atomic drop but Tito reverses for one of his own. Tito tries a backdrop but Race boots Santana. Harley tries for a top rope head butt but Tito again gets out of the way. Santana tries the Figure four but is distracted by Heenan, which allows Harley to roll him up with the hook of some tights for the win at 12:48. Rating: Very Good match **1/2

– Jesse Ventura interviews the Hulkster. Never understood why Hogan worked with Paul Orndorff as much as he did but never got his last name right. Paul ORN-DOFF DUDE!

Match #6: The Hart Foundation v. The Rougeau Brothers: Very early on in the Rougeaus’ time with the WWF. They were still getting a decent little push upon their debut. The Rougeaus get the best of the Hart’s early on. Bret is actually sent out of the ring on 3 different occasions. Jacques can’t knock the Anvil off his feet so he dares Neidhart to try and knock him down. Anvil charges right into a slam and Jacques applies a Boston Crab very quickly. The Hitman is in to break up the submission hold, and the Hart’s hit the Demolition Decapitation finisher on Jacques for a two count. Jacques is thrown to the floor where the Hitman slams him into the apron. Inside the ring the Harts double team and work over Jacques some more. Jacques tries to amount some offense but misses a reverse body block. The Hitman gets a back breaker but misses a middle rope elbow and Raymond gets the hot tag. Ray throws the Harts into each other and puts a sleeper on the Anvil, which the Hitman breaks up. Jacques gets knocked to the floor and the Harts go to work on Raymond. The ref gets the Anvil out of the ring while Jacques comes out of nowhere with a sunset flip on Bret for the win at 13:50. Rating: 2 Good matches in a row **1/4

– Gorilla & Heenan continue to argue about if Heenan has a “doll” or not. Heenan says he will produce his figure next week.

Final Thoughts: Most of the garbage was In Progress, the two very good matches were complete. Thumbs up here. Match of the Night: Tito Santana v. Harley Race, Harts vs. Rougeaus wasn’t too bad either.

Video Review: WWF Prime Time Wrestling 9/30/86

Prime Time Wrestling (9/30/86)

– Your hosts, as usual, The Gorilla and the Brain. All matches on this show are from the 9/6/86 Boston Garden Event.

Match #1: Bob Orton v. Cousin Luke: Orton has recently joined forces with Adrian Adonis and is sporting a pink Cowboy hat. Luke has had several gimmicks in the business, none of them ever gained enough fame to remember however. Orton tries an attack on the Hillbilly but Luke has none of it. Luke goes for a bear hug early on but the Ace Cowboy gets out. Orton uses some dirty chicanery to take over for a few moments. Luke amounts a come back but the crowd doesn’t care. Luke nails a hip toss but runs into Cowboy’s knee in the corner. Orton covers for the quick win at 3:57.  Rating: Very short, DUD

-Back from commercial and we are shown one of the most infamous segments in WWF history as Adrian Adonis’ “Flower Shop” Interview Segment goes head to head with Roddy “Piper’s Pit”. Piper returned from some time off to see that Adonis had taken the place of the Pit and Roddy wanted his talk segment back, so the duo were to compete to see who had the better “talk show”. Adonis’ guest was Bob Orton, while Piper’s guest was Don Muraco. Orton runs down Piper which brings Roddy over to the Flower Shop set. Roddy removes Ace’s pink cowboy hat and replaces it with a ladies hat. Hot Rod plays with Adonis’ breast before heading back to the Piper’s Pit set. Roddy brings out Don Muraco as his guest. Adonis & Orton come over to Piper’s Pit but Piper gives Adonis a bra and says “see ya later”. Great Stuff! Adonis returns and Piper places a giant pair of panties on Adrian’s head. Piper & Muraco begin to argue. Piper calls Muraco fatso, Adonis asks who Piper was calling fatso, Roddy replies “take your pick”. Orton & Muraco attack Piper, while Adonis beats on Roddy’s leg with a hair. The heels tear down Piper’s Pit as Jimmy Hart watches on. This entire segment was 10 minutes long and was just outstanding. This got so much heat and lives up to this day as being one of the best non wrestling segments in WWF history.

Match #2: Sivi Afi v. “Duke of Dorchester” Pete Doherty: Consequently enough Gorilla Monsoon says that Afi wants to be called “TAMA” now, this is just of course a month or so after King Tonga changed his name to “HAKU”. Funny thing is once the Islanders were paired up, it would be the Tonga Kid who would be named Tama, not Sivi Afi. Strangely here it is hinted that Sivi Afi was supposed to originally play the part of Tama in the Islanders, luckily he did not. Chops galore by Sivi to start. Afi applies a nerve hold for a moment, and a dropkick sends Doherty to the floor. Sivi misses a blind charge and Doherty takes control. Duke comes charging in and misses a move of his own, landing on his head. Afi comes back with a gut wrench suplex and a high cross body block for the win at 7:00. Rating: Sivi Afi + Pete Doherty = BAD MATCH, 1/4*

– Ken Resnick interviews John Studd & King Kong Bundy who are just huge, huge men.

Match #3: The Hart Foundation v. The American Express (Mike Rotunda & Dan Spivey): Upon Rotunda’s return from Florida the WWF gave him his old team gimmick back with a slightly altered team name and stuck him with Dan Spivey, who is replacing Barry Windham. The Express get the best of the Hitman early on. The Anvil is tagged in and Spivey & Rotunda work over his leg.  We’re 10 minutes into the bout before the heels cut Rotunda off. The Harts hit the Demolition’s Decapitation move for two. Anvil gets a front face lock on Rotunda while Spivey chases Bret around the ring for what seems like a 5k run. The Harts throw Mike to the floor but Spivey posts the Anvil to give Rotunda time to get back in the ring. Mike gets a 2 count with a sunset flip but Neidhart cuts him right back off and goes back to the front face lock. Rotunda makes the tag, not once , but twice and the referee misses it both times. Spivey come in anyway and throws the Harts into each other. Spivey gets a bulldog on Bret but the Anvil breaks up the pin attempt as the bell sounds. We have a 20:00 draw and the crowd is pissed. Rating: They told a good story but the finish was a little questionable. **

Match #4: Pedro Morales v. Rene Goulet: Rene stalls but Pedro finally gets his hands on him and works on Goulet’s arm. Rene finally finds a way to send Morales to the floor. Goulet keeps Pedro on the floor for a while but eventually  lets him back in. Goulet begins to go for the Scorpio claw, but that move never gets it done anymore, so he second guesses it and applies his new nerve hold which Gorilla calls “Dreaded French Croissant Crunch” or something like that. Apparently that doesn’t get it done either as Morales comes back with a back drop and an atomic drop for two. Pedro whips Goulet into the corner and Rene does the Ric Flair flip over to the apron but misses something from the top. Pedro takes advantage of Goulet and does a very sloppy roll up on Rene for the win at around 11:00. Rating: This was supposed to make people WANT to attend House Shows?!? 1/2*

– Ken Resnick interviews a heel Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Jake puts over his interview segment, The Snake Pit. TRUST ME, it’s good.

Match #5: Tag Champions The British Bulldogs v. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff (w/Slick): Ahhh, look at the anti-Russian heat as the crowd fills the ring with garbage as Nikolai sings. Smith gets the best of the Iron Sheik early on but Sheik not only does a drop down, but a LEAP FROG BY THE IRON SHEIK!! In comes Dynamite who catches Sheik’s boot and goes to work on the Iranian. Iron Sheik gets a cut off on Dynamite and quickly throws him to the outside. Back inside Volkoff is tagged in and he levels Dynamite with a knee. Volkoff tries another one but Dynamite rolls out of the way and into his corner to tag in Smith. Davey Boy gets the hot tag and goes to work on the heels. Smith locks Volkoff in a bear hug until Sheik makes the break. Smith now applies a bear hug on Sheik for his troubles. Volkoff breaks the bear hug this time to return the favor to Sheik. Volkoff tags in Sheik who gets a gut wrench suplex and slaps on the CAMEL CLUTCH on Davey Boy. Dynamite has had enough and breaks the hold. Smith gets a small package on Sheik but Nikolai turns the Iranian over to be on the top. The Kid comes back in and rolls Smith back on top in the cradle for the pin at 7:00. Bulldogs get a pinfall win here. Rating: Very short and painless, they get *

– After a huge build up to seeing video footage of Gorilla Monsoon “the worst wrestler in the world”, instead we are shown a clip of Hulk Hogan beating down Heenan from WrestleMania 2. Monsoon calls Heenan the worst wrestler ever and Heenan goes nuts.

Final Thoughts: All that build up for nothing. Not that I expected for Heenan to make an ass of Monsoon, but still. These matches were the under card matches from a “B” House Show so they’re much better than I expected.  It goes without saying, the Piper/Adonis segment was the best part of the program.

Match of the Night: The Hart Foundation v. The US Express

Video Review: WWF Prime Time Wrestling 9/22/86

0

Prime Time Wrestling (9/22/86)

– While most PTW’s from this time period usually featured several matches from single events, usually from MSG, Boston Gardens, MLG, the Spectrum, etc.. this episode mixed things up a bit.

– Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan. Oh yeah, woop woop!

Match #1: Kamala (w/Friday) v. Pat Patterson: Friday is later renamed Kim Chee, during Kamala’s second tenure in the WWF, however this match is from his first time in. This match is exactly two years old having happened at Madison Square Garden on 9/22/84. Kamala attacks Patterson to start off, Pat fights back to get the Ugandan off his back. Patterson tries to tackle Kamala but nothing’s happening. Pat’s pretty much here as a name to put the newer guys over at this point, and that he does, after some stalling and some toe stomping, Kamala finished the match with a big splash at 5:28.
Rating: A blah match but made Kamala look unstoppable, DUD

– Gorilla & Heenan chat about Kamala, until Mean Gene wanders onto the PTW set. Heenan asks why Okerlund’s invading his show and asks how would Gene like it if he was to pop up on All American or Spotlight. Please do Bobby. Gene comes out with a list of names of people who have slammed John Studd and says Heenan owed $120,000 in all.

Match #2: Moondog Rex v. Terry Gibbs: This match is from MSG originally taped on 1/21/85 and is in progress, luckily. Both men are lower card heels, kinda like the Brooklyn Brawler’s of their time. Rex is the more credible of the two being a former tag champion and all. Gibbs goes for a backdrop but telegraphs it and Rex takes over control on Gibbs. In between chin locks the Moondog gets a version of the Hot shot and a back breaker in on Terry. Rex tries a big splash but Gibbs gets his knees up. Terry tries some offense but Rex goes back to the chin lock. Moondog now tries a backdrop and it’s Rex this time who telegraphs the move and Gibbs hits a kneelift, followed by an inverted atomic drop. A back suplex gets two on the Moondog. Gibbs AGAIN ducks his head for a backdrop which allows Moondog Rex to hit a neck breaker for the win at 6:37.
Rating: Surprisingly not completely horrid, but they used the same spot 3 times. 1/4* though

– Bobby tries to poke fun that Mean Gene forgot a name on the “Who slammed John Studd” list. Monsoon points out that Heenan now owes $135,000, which changes Bobby’s tune. D’oh!

– Ken Resnick interviews George Steele, here is what the Animal had to say. “Prime Time, Tough Wrestlers, see, see, Weasel, see, Elizabeth… nice, Macho… bad”. Wow, could he cut a promo or what?

Match #3: Peggy Patterson & Penny Mitchell v. Velvet McIntyre & Desiree Peterson: From the Meadowlands, I’m guessing around March of ’85. I can’t find the exact date but that’s when these girls were in town. Gorilla and HOWARD FINKEL are your commentators. The faces work over Peggy at first but Penny is tagged in and gains control for her team. Mitchell & Patterson switch on and off with the longest side headlocks I’ve ever seen on Desiree. The heels move from headlocks to front face locks to a camel clutch. Peterson makes a tag but the ref does not see it. A form of an armbar now applied on Desiree. Peterson comes out of nowhere with a body block and tags in Velvet. McIntyre hits a series of kicks on Mitchell. Penny cuts Velvet off but McIntyre hits an enzuiguri to make the tag back to Desiree. Peterson gets a dropkick and body slam for two on Penny. Desiree gets a backdrop but Peggy comes in and cuts her off. A little miscommunication sees the heels run into each other and Peterson now makes the THIRD HOT TAG of the match. Velvet’s back in with a victory roll on Penny for two. The heels are thrown into each other and McIntyre now with a sunset flip on Peggy to get the win at roughly 16:00.
Rating: Ridiculously long. Velvet was the only one worth much in this match. 1/2* for the THREE HOT TAGS

Match #4: Tag Champions: The British Bulldogs (w/Capt. Lou) v. Jack (Mick) Foley & Les Thornton: Oh yeah, it’s that match, the one from Foley’s book. This match is from a Superstars Taping in Providence, RI on 8/26/86. Davey Boy & Thornton chain wrestle for a bit, Thornton hits a European Uppercut, or just a plain old uppercut since he’s from Europe. Smith gets a victory roll for two and Dynamite & Foley are in…LOOK OUT!!! Dynamite gets a snap suplex followed by a double under hook. The Kid gets in a back breaker and tags in Davey Boy. Running Powerslam & a delayed suplex on Foley for two. Foley somehow manages to hit a flying back elbow but Smith just stands there and no sells it leaving the future Cactus Jack looking stupid on the mat. Dynamite gets in a clothesline and a back suplex from the top rope for the finish at 3:43.
Rating: Basic squash match but since it has some history in it, I’ll go 1/4*

– Monsoon and Heenan get on the topic of wrestling bears. Gorilla mentions he wrestled a bear once. Bobby thinks he means “bare” as in naked. You can only guess where this goes.

Match #5: Moondog Spot v. Jose Luis Rivera: The match is said to be in progress but actually just started. We’re coming from the Boston Gardens, this match was taped on 4/26/86. Rivera works over Spot’s arm while some fans chant “BORING”. I agree! If I were there I’d chant along with them. Spot gets the cut off 5:00 in and applies a chin lock. Jose tries a sunset flip for two and Spot is right back on top with an EVIL nerve hold. Spot with an inverted atomic drop but misses a Jerry Lawler fist drop. Rivera ties Spot in the ropes and fires in with some right hands. Spot reverses an Irish whip and catches Jose with a surprisingly nice shoulder breaker for the pin at 10:30.
Rating: Long, Very boring, very slow, very bad. -*

– Ken Resnick is with Randy Savage. Macho rants for a bit about nothing of importance, but it’s still so cool.

Match 6: The Killer Bees v. Tag Champions The Dream Team (w/Johnny V.): This match is from 12/7/85 in the Boston Garden. For some reason the Killer Bees get a round of boos as do the Champions at the time when this match was taped. The Bees work over Valentine’s leg early on but Beefcake gets the tag and takes over on Blair. Brunzell has a heel beard going here BTW. Brian eventually starts doing some weird wigging out on the canvas, I’ve never seen a sell job like that before, and he makes the tag to Brunzell. Jumping Jim with a dropkick on Brutus but Valentine breaks the count. Brunzell slaps the sleeper on Brutus, but Valentine nails Jumpin’ Jim from behind and Beefcake covers for the 3 count at 9:35.
Rating: It was there but wasn’t much. 3/4*

– Although the previous match is like 9 months old, Monsoon states that the referee, Danny Davis, was turning heel even back then. In closing, Heenan promises footage of the Worst Professional Wrestler EVER next week on PTW. Apparently he doesn’t realize that there are several “worst wrestlers ever” and they all fought this week on the show.

Final Thoughts: More often than not the actual Monsoon/Heenan host segments are more entertaining than the matches, this episode is no exception to that rule. PTW was in between tapings and we got stuck with some leftovers, really bad leftovers. The kind of leftovers you sit back in your fridge and forget about until the aluminum foil itself is all moldy, then you don’t wanna touch so it still sits there until Vince McMahon sees it and wants to air it on USA.

Match of the Night: The Dream Team v. The Killer Bees

WWE Monday Night Raw Report 12-30-13

We’re currently looking for a full time Monday Night Raw Reviewer, but for right now I’ll be handling the duties. Should you wish to join Crazymax.org as a writer or reviewer, please contact us at Crazymaxorg@gmail.com

Here’s a look at this week’s Monday Night Raw results for December 30th, 2013 from Richmond, VA…

– Raw opens with a CM Punk promo. Punk discusses his accolades of 2013, but admits it wasn’t his year, but perhaps it was the Shields… Cue the Shield from the crowd… Punk says he knows all 3 members of the Shield can be anyone, but he wants a 1 on 1 match with the best member of the team. Punk mentions Reigns by name, but Seth Rollins steps up and Brad Maddox makes the match for RIGHT NOW!

1. CM Punk over Seth Rollins (w/The Shield) with the GTS in a good match. It looked like Rollins may have had the match won with a standing Sliced Bread (Ultimo Dragon’s old WWE finisher), but the Shield try and interfere. Rollins ends up on the apron and slingshots back into the ring and finds himself on the shoulders of Punk for the GTS.

– Daniel Bryan interrupts a conversation between Maddox, HHH & Stephanie. Bryan wants Bray Wyatt TONIGHT! Maddox informs Bryan if he can beat Harper AND Rowan in singles matches tonight, then he can have Bray Wyatt. Maddox sets up the Gauntlet Match, Bryan vs. the Wyatts for the main event.

– Stephanie McMahon makes her way to the stage for a “big announcement”. We are shown a video package dedicated to the WWE World Champion Randy Orton. Stephanie then announces that Orton will defend his championship against John Cena at the Royal Rumble.

2. Dolph Ziggler vs. Curtis Axel. Both guys get those cute little 80’s interview spots in the corner of the screen going into the match. Ziggler gets the win with the Zig Zag. These guys had a much better match on Main Event a week or two ago.

3. WWE Intercontinental Champion Big E. Langston vs. Fandango (w/Summer Rae). Fandango earns this match by way of a win over Dolph Ziggler last week. Langston is insanely mobile for a guy of his build. Barring any injuries he could be a big player in time. Langston wins here with his “Big Ending” Finisher. The guy needs a new finisher…

– Booker T hosts a New Years Eve toast on stage with multiple WWE Superstars and Divas. Bad News Barrett interrupts by rising above the stage in a cherry picker staged as a podium and does his usual routine, this time about how 2014 will be no better than 2013, in fact far worse.

– Renee Young interviews Damien Sandow backstage. We get to vote ON THE APP foor Sandow’s opponent. Choices are Kofi Kingston, the Great Khali & the Miz. Sandow doesn’t care who he faces, and says he’s sick of the gimmick matches he’s been thrown in. Sandow claims he will quit if he loses tonight!

– Jerry “The King” Lawler reveals that Sandow will face The Great Khali with almost 40% of the votes. REALLY? Khali? Kofi & The Miz have to be pissed.

4. Damien Sandow pins The Great Khali (no Hornswaggle, hopefully that remains a trend) with a school boy. Sandow pulls back so far that Khali has to raise his shoulder in order not to die. The referee counts 3, event with Khali’s shoulder up. The announcers point it out, and it’s even mentioned in a backstage segment with Maddox & HHH. I hope this doesn”t lead to a rematch…

5. “The Main Event Player” Brodus Clay vs. R-Truth. Clay is already in the ring so his new music doesn’t debut on TV until “The Main Event”. We get Xavier Woods on commentary, and he seems lost out there. Not knocking Woods, just sometimes these guys don’t know what to say when they’re forced to ad lib. That’s more WWE’s fault though. Truth is in trouble so Woods calls out the Funkadactyls and they dance on the stage while Woods dances at ringside. Clay becomes distracted with the match and Truth ends up getting the win…

Can someone explain to me exactly how Clay is the heel here? These guys steal his music, his valets, they cheat repeatedly to beat him. If I were Clay I’d be pissed too. Then there’s Tensai, poor old Tensai. Clay beats him down the week prior, and after Truth & Woods save Tensai, they decide to dance with the Funkadactyls while Tensai just lays outside the ring like an afterthought. Again I ask, how are Truth, Woods and the ladies the faces here?

Triple H comes out and says 2013 was a banner year under “The Authority”, but 2014 will be unlike anything we’ve seen before and asks everyone to welcome back Brock Lesnar, accompanied by Paul Heyman. The beast is back and that’s what’s best for business… Triple H shakes hands with both Heyman and Lesnar and leaves. Well that’s a plus! Heyman says that Lesnar is not back to settle old scores because he has no old scores. He says that whoever emerges from the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble will lose to the “self-declared No. 1 Contender” Brock Lesnar. If people can self declare themselves the number 1 contender, shouldn’t we have a line of challengers in the wait?

Lesnar takes the mic and says he does not care who wins and he does not have to win the Royal Rumble because the line starts with him. He dares anyone to try to stop him. Heyman says no one would try to do that, but Mark Henry’s music hits and he makes his way toward the ring. Lesnar assaults The World’s Strongest Man before he even gets into the ring, but Henry tosses him over the barricade. Lesnar recovers and smashes Henry right through the barricade. He picks up Henry and plants him with an F5 on the floor in front of the announce table. Heyman tells him that is enough, they’ve made their point, and they leave as trainers check on Henry.

A. You’d think Henry would have gotten word not to show up based on the Smackdown Spoilers from Sunday, and B. That F5 looked dangerous, it could have ended really bad. Good segment for Lesnar though. Would make a fine Royal Rumble match. I could see Henry getting in some good shots and Lesnar taking it home. Wouldn’t need to go very long to serve it’s purpose.

6. 10-Diva Tag. The Bellas, Funkadactyls & Eva Marie vs. Kaitlin, Summer Rae, Aksana, Alicia Fox & Rose Mendes. The Divas division was all bus extinct earlier this year, so we can all thank Total Divas for all of these multiple person tag matches these days. Kaitlyn looks far better with normal hair now, but she’s beyond lost in the shuffle. Any Total Divas show that doesn’t have Summer Rae on it isn’t worth watching if you ask me. Anyway, Cameron takes a nasty bump on her face in the corner, but she troops on. Surprising finish with AKSANA of all people pinning Nikki Bella. The “Non-Total Divas” get the win and Aksana’s music plays. Wow, that’s the first time I’ve ever heard it, guess she doesn’t win often.

– Brad Maddox tells Triple H and Stephanie that the referee situation from the Sandow/Kahli match has been handled. Stephanie says she has been impressed with Maddox tonight but is looking forward to next week when Old School Raw takes place. Maddox says he has a few of her favorites lined up to appear, but she asks about Triple H’s favorites. Maddox responds with a few “Woo!” but HHH tells him not to do that. Maddox leaves the screen, returns with another “Woo!” and leaves again.

Daniel Bryan prepares to run the Wyatt Gauntlet… NEXT!

7. Daniel Bryan vs. Luke Harper. Great match, some dangerous and surprising spots are done for it to be in a WWE ring. Really good stuff, back and forth, Harper counters a rana with a Superbomb from the ropes. Harper attempts a German Suplex but Bryan flips over top and lands on his feet. Harper turns around and gets nailed with the running knee. Bryan wins match #1!

8. Daniel Bryan vs. Erick Rowan. Rowan rushes right in and tosses Bryan outside and into the announce table. Rowan hits a fallaway slam from off the top turnbuckle, but Bryan is able to cradle Rowan in the end for the pin.

Rowan beats on Bryan after the fall, until Bray Wyatt enters the ring.

9. Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt. Bray Wyatt turns his back on Bryan but Harper and Rowan immediately rush the ring and attack Daniel. Bray grabs a microphone and starts to sing. He says this is where their story ends and says things could have been different. He tells Bryan to open his eyes and that this is the end. Bryan says “you’re right” and Bray hands him the mic. Bryan replies “You were right, you were always right.”

The crowd begins to chant “No, No, No!”.

Bryan says no matter how many matches he won and no matter how loud the people cheered for him, Bray was always right that the machine would never let him win. He says the people’s chants had no effect on those in charge and tells Bray that he is his. He asks to join the Wyatt family. Bray extends his hand and Bryan reaches for it, but Bray pulls away. Bryan pulls himself up to his knees and mimics Bray’s pose, but Bray hits him with Sister Abigail. Bray says “this is forever” and “this is going to change everything” and the Wyatts carry Bryan up the ramp. They stop halfway up and Bryan walks without help to the stage. The fans chant “No!” once again and Bryan looks around at them. They chant his name but he shakes his head, turns his back to the crowd and walks away with his head down along with the Wyatt Family.

Raw returns next week for it’s very first edition of the new year, and it will have the “Old School” theme attached. Some of the stars shown in the video package included Ric Flair, The New Age Outlaws, Rikishi & Scotty Too Hotty, Bob Backlund, DDP, “Mean” Gene Okerlund, I.R.S., and “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase.
