The Carolina Panthers want The Nature Boy!

0

Below is an excerpt from ESPN.com that discusses the NFL’s Carolina Panthers recent request to have “Nature Boy” Ric Flair on their sidelines for their upcoming Playoff game against the New England Patriots in Charlotte next weekend.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam Newton may be on his way to becoming the most recognized celebrity/athlete in Charlotte, but the third-year Carolina Panthers quarterback isn’t there yet.

To borrow a phrase from the person he has to surpass: “To be the man, you gotta beat the man.”
WOOOOOOO!!!

Yes, Ric Flair.

When you talk about institutions in the Queen City, the 16-time heavyweight wrestling champion, often described in these parts as the platinum blond deity, remains king.

So it seems only fitting that the Panthers (12-4) have adopted “The Nature Boy’s” famous “WOOOOOOO” that he uses to taunt opponents.

Cornerback Drayton Florence actually came up with the idea one day in practice. He suggested that the defensive backs break with two claps and a “WOOOOOOO!”

Next thing you know the linebackers were doing it. Then the entire defense was doing it. Then the offense wanted to get involved.

Eventually, it led to whoever gets the game ball following a victory having to give two claps followed by the entire team going “WOOOOOO!”

Newton somewhere along the line began adding “and the Nature Boy” after a slight pause. Here’s a sample from the Panthers.com website.

“It’s exciting to hear,” Newton said. “It’s exciting to say it and exciting to do … It’s a tribute to what he does. It’s kind of something of a rejoice when you say it.”

And yes, Newton grew up a fan.

“Who didn’t grow up watching WWF, WCW and having Ric Flair slap somebody’s chest and go, ‘WOOOOOOO?'” Newton said.

Flair has yet to give a pregame locker room pep talk, and it’s doubtful he will be available for the Jan. 12 playoff game because of a prior engagement.

But Florence is doing his best to arrange something, if not for the 12th then the NFC championship if the second-seeded Panthers win and top-seeded Seattle loses to put the game in Charlotte.

“He’s the man,” Florence said of Flair. “We want the man to join us.”

Flair did send a phone message via Mario Addison, who ran into him at a local Taco Mac, that the defensive end played for the team before the Monday night game against New England.

Legacy Talent and Entertainment, which represents Flair, put the message to music and pictures on the wrestler’s Facebook page.

“Hey boys, it’s The Nature Boy Ric Flair calling you live from Atlanta, Ga.,” Flair said in the message. “Tonight’s the night guys. The New England Patriots are in town. Who cares? It’s Carolina Panther time guys. And remember, tonight is the night, and to be the team you’ve got to be the team.

“Cam Newton, athletic gifts unparalleled. Steve Smith, the baddest man in the NFL. My good buddy Mario, you guys do it tonight. Remember, to be the team, you’ve got to beat the team. And right now you are the team, and will be all night long. Let’s do it guys. Let’s have two claps and a Ric Flair WOOOOOOO! Go Panthers. WOOOOOOO!”

Rob Van Dam set to return at The Royal Rumble?

0

After some uncertainty over the last month, it’s now being reported that it’s very likely we’ll be seeing Rob Van Dam make his WWE return as part of the Royal Rumble on January 26th in Pittsburgh. Should RVD return at the Royal Rumble, his short term contract would likely take him through WrestleMania XXX with the option to extend.

Video Review: SWS/WWF @ Tokyo Dome – 12/12/1991

0

Early 1990’s WWF and Japan on the same show? In the Tokyo Dome no less? This should be fun …

1. UWF Rules: Masakatsu Funaki vs. Jerry Flynn – 1
Jerry Flynn and his mullet make an appearance in this brief, five-minute bout that felt more like a UWF exhibition than an actual match. In the highlight department, Flynn hit a nice outside-in kick and Funaki had some sort of weird chicken wing hold on to get the submission. The norm in UWF matches is kicks and ground work and this had a ton of it.

2. Ultimo Dragon vs. Jerry Estrada – 6
This was more lucha in flavor than puro. Ultimo did some arm work after a beginning that, as good ol’ JR would say, was quicker than a hiccup. Dragon attempted his handstand in the corner but not sure if he slipped or not but he took a nasty spill to the floor. Estrada actually took a fall that looked worse when Dragon monkey flipped him over the ropes. Dragon didn’t really seem to sure of himself when he was running the ropes at points. More fun from the aerial department included Dragon hitting a senton to the outside, Estrada doing a Cactus Jack-style running somersault flip off the apron, and Dragon hitting perfectly on one of the craziest Asai moonsaults I’ve ever seen in my life that resulted in both guys going three rows deep in the ringside fans. Dragon hit a German for the win but added to it by doing an awesome floatover. Some really good stuff here.

3. Yoshiaki Yatsu & Haku vs. Ashura Hara & Davey Boy Smith – 5
We are joined in progress at the 9 minute mark with Haku eating some nasty chops from Hara. Hara and Yatsu had a tremendous headbutt exchange with some goofy facials added in for good measure. Besides Bulldog almost knocking Yatsu’s block off with a sick clothesline when he ran in to save his partner, he didn’t really contribute much. Haku’s played this kind of game before and worked pretty stiff as well. Best parts of the match for me were the exchanges between Hara and Yatsu. Smith winds up pinning Haku with an inside cradle. Bulldog got a post-match beatdown from the opposition which delighted me. Maybe next time he’ll learn to lay that shit in. Grade is based on what was shown and had the whole match aired, it probably would’ve gotten a point higher.

4. The Rockers vs. George & Shunji Takano – 4
This is joined in progress as well with Jannetty and George doing some mat work that didn’t really go anywhere. Shunji is a big, lanky dude with a Terry Gordy haircut who moves really awkward. He hit a nice looking dropkick from the second rope that woke up Jannetty. Shawn’s superkicks were spot on. The Rockers seemed like they would rather be working a house show in Boise than working here but George and Shunji did their best to sell but they seemed light on offense as well. George pinned Jannetty after Michaels pushed his partner off the top in an assisted Rocket Launcher, after becoming frustrated with Jannetty, with Jannetty landing on George’s lifted knees. Post match saw Shawn and Marty work the split angle.

5. Ted DiBiase (w/Sherri) vs. Kerry Von Erich – 4
Kerry looked completely gone and out of it. DiBiase had to guide him through everything, even go up for him on suplexes and what not. Von Erich totally sandbagged when he was supposed to go up for a DiBiase vertical suplex. They did a brawling segment on the outside that I thought might lead to a double count out. Kerry’s offense was pretty much non-existent but what was there was supported by some great selling from DiBiase, such as the discus punch sell where he went all the way back into a corner. He also made Von Erich look good even when he was selling one of his own moves, most notably when he missed a second rope back elbow and did a fantastic sell. DiBiase pinned Von Erich with a knee to the back and a DDT after Kerry put Sherri in the claw. Points here for DiBiase’s performance as this felt like a match that could be found in MSG during this period.

6. Naoki Sano vs. Rick Martel – 5
I know I’m probably doing myself a disservice by not watching much Sano, but after seeing this I definitely want to watch more of his bouts. He killed Martel with two wild high risk moves. First, a somersault to the outside from the top turnbuckle only to top himself by doing an insane running swanton over the top rope where he jammed his head into Martel’s shoulder. Martel didn’t do a lot of high impact stuff but his ground work had some effectiveness to it. Of course, it helped tons that Sano sold them like he was being tortured a la Mel Gibson at the end of Braveheart. Sano wins with a German Suplex to become the first SWS/WWF Light Heavyweight Champion.

7. Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs. Ishinriki – 3
I didn’t really see a lot that I liked here. Ishriniki was on offense for the majority of the bout and had this constant “Holy crap I’m in the ring with Fujiwara” look on his face. His slaps looked like something you would see on a playground between two eight year old girls. Eventually, Fujiwara stopped messing around, trapped Ishriniki’s arm with his legs, and damn near ripped it off his body and ate it. Fujiwara wins with the arm lock. Lesson #1 young Ishiriniki … Thou shalt not fuck with Fujiwara.

8. WWF Tag Team Title Match: The Legion Of Doom (c) vs. The Natural Disasters – 3
Started off pretty wild with some brawling outside the ring which was highlighted by Animal wailing on Quake with a few hard chair shots. Animal seemed to be the most energetic person throughout the bout. Disasters seemed content to no sell a lot of LOD’s early offense and do simple, sloppy power moves. The spot in the middle of the bout where Earthquake just dropped Animal through a table was pretty cool. Finish with LOD doing a Hart Attack type move with Hawk coming off the second rope was pretty sloppy. Nevertheless, Animal pins Typhoon for the win.

9. Hulk Hogan vs. Genichiro Tenryu – 6
To me this didn’t seem like the typical Hogan match. He seemed more inclined to actually wrestle instead of going for his usual choreographed American style schtick. The strike exchange between the two was nice. Hogan got in a good elbow and a good knee that ended up hurting his own knee. Tenryu capitalized on said knee injury by working over it with a chair. Interesting spot where Hogan caught Tenryu with a couple short elbows that resulted in Tenryu giving him a hard Kawada kick right in the face. The nearfalls weren’t up to par with many Japanese main event bouts I’ve seen but they still had some heat behind them, including Tenryu kicking up from Hogan’s legdrop. Tenryu got in a nice powerbomb and reversed an attempted enziguri into a leglock. A crisp lariat from the Hulk finished Tenyru and capped off a really fun bout and a fun show overall.

Bray Wyatt = WWE’s Next Big Thing

0

With WrestleMania rumors running around about the potential matchups of John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt, Cena & Hogan vs. The Wyatts, and even Cena, Bryan & Hogan vs. The Wyatt Family, it’s no shock that Bray Wyatt is WWE’s “next big thing”. Triple H is said to be the major supporter of the Wyatt Family, but all officials are high on the stables future with the company. Those in creative are reportedly working very hard to get the Wyatts over at the main event level in time for “something big” at WrestleMania.

Davey Richards/Eddie Edwards upset “The Game”?

0

Recently, several news sites have announced that Davey Richard & Eddie Edwards aren’t expected back at the next set of NXT tapings. Early reports claimed that Triple H opted not to sign them to deals due to their size, or lack thereof. Supposedly Mr. H decided that the WWE has enough smaller talent that “can go”, and now wants to focus on signing larger individuals. Now, further information has come to light in regards to their not being invited back.

Talented or not, it’s been reported that the pair of former ROH superstars upset Triple H during their recent match in NXT. It was Richards & Edwards teaming up to take on NXT’s “The Ascension” of Konnor & Viktor (Conor O’Brian & Rick Victor). After a spot that ended with Richards landing awkwardly on his head, Triple H reportedly told the referee to give word to end the match. However, Richards & Edwards didn’t “take it home” immediately and the match continued  a while longer. Many now feel this played a part in HHH’s decision.

Several inside WWE not only pushed for the duo to be signed, but felt the two should be brought up to the main roster immediately as part of the youth movement. Suffice to say, Triple H ultimately decided against it.

WWC “Super Estrellas” TV Results for 12/28/13

WWC “Super Estrellas” 12/28/13

Mike Mendoza vs. David Montes.  Mendoza is a relative newcomer who is feuding with Diabolico.  I’m not familiar with Montes.  Montes gets good heat on Mendoza for a short time.  Mendoza made a comeback with an X factor face plant.  Montes took back over with a spinebuster.  Mendoza got the win using a boston crab submission.

Ray Gonzalez vs. Chris Angel.  Match jointed progress which is always the case with their tv shows.  Angel got a near fall with a bulldog.  Angel locked in a Fujiwara arm bar and then a cross armbreaker.  Gonzalez started his comeback working the leg of Chris Angel.  Gonzalez hit his TKO finisher for the win.  A really good match, one of the best of the year, imo.

TNT vs. Carlito.  TNT is Savio Vega.  Vega used this gimmick for years prior to his WWF stint and just recently revived it.  Match started with both guys brawling on the floor and all over the stands in the stadium.  Match finally got in the ring.  Carlito stopped TNT dead in his tracks with a codebreaker.  Ray Gonzalez came out and distracted Carlito allowing TNT to hit his super side kick for the pin.  Match was really good too!

– End of the show featured highlights of the Carlos Colon vs. Invader #1 “Ambulance match” from their big December show “Lockout”.  Invader #1 would get the win. They also previewed their January “Euphoria” card which always takes place the first week of January.
