We have a main event of Vader vs. The British Bulldog. However, we also have one of the most infamous debuts in wrestling history and thats the debut of the Shockmaster. Theres a lot going on here so lets not waste any more time and get to it.

Event Information:
Date: August 18th, 1993
Location: Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida
Attendance: 8,903
Main Event: WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Vader (c) vs. British Bulldog

Show Opening:

They run through the card. We got Sting/Flair vs. The Colossal Kongs. We also have the Hollywood Blondes defending their tag team titles against Paul Roma/Arn Anderson. Lastly, the main event will feature Vader defending his title vs. Davey Boy Smith. They then head ringside where Jesse and Tony are standing by. Tony tells us that Pillman is injured and he won’t be able to compete on tonights show.

Backstage Promo by: Hollywood Blondes

They then cut to a promo by Pillman with Austin talking about how he can’t compete tonight because the WCW doctors didn’t clear him. Pillman says he knows the fans are greatly disappointed that he can’t compete. Pillman says it breaks his heart. Austin says that these champions won’t be clashing but some time down the road they may be able to fit Arn and Roma in. Austin says they would love to compete but tonight just isn’t the night.

Tony and Jesse Ringside:

They go back to Tony and Jesse ringside and Tony tells us that since the injury that WCW made an announcement and that the Hollywood Blondes will have to defense the titles. Tony tells us that Lord Steven Regal will fill in for Pillman and take his spot in the tag team match. Jesse says that we all see the injury so why does he have to wrestle hurt. Tony then sends us up to the ring where we get this thing under way.

Match 1: WCW Tag Team Title Match: Steve Austin/Steve Regal vs. Arn Anderson/Paul Roma

Austin and Arn start this one of with a tie up. Austin gets the early advantage with a big time clothesline on Arn right off the top of the head. They exchange control until Arn ends up catapulting Austin to the apron but Austin quickly gets back on. Austin the charges at Arn and Arn dumps him over the top rope with a back body drop. Jesse is hot that they didn’t call a disqualification for sending him over the top rope.

Austin drags Arn to the outside and they end up brawling on the outside. Austin gets in the ring and quickly tags in Regal. Roma gets the tag in and he comes in with an elbow to the arm of Regal. Some more back and forth action until Roma hits Regal with a nice body slam and then a drop kick to regain control of the match. Roma ends up hitting the ropes and Austin trips him up from the outside, allowing Regal and Austin to gain control of the match.

Austin gets the tag and he comes off the top rope with a right hand. He ends up dropping Roma with a nice back elbow and then a nice snap suplex. Austin is choking Roma on the ropes as Pillman gets in the face and does the film reel taunt. Austin distracts the ref so Pillman can choke out Roma some more. Regal gets the tag and he comes in and starts working over the midsection on Roma. Regal does a nice looking summersault for a 2 count on Roma. Regal hits a gut wrench suplex for another 2 count. Regal then tags in Austin and he comes in and they get sloppy as Roma tries to block a corner head butt but Austin just runs into on his own.

Austin stops whatever momentum Roma head with a knee to the gut and he follows that up with a tag to Regal. Regal and Austin taking turns to work over Roma in the corner. Austin gets caught in the Horsemen corner when he turns around and gets floored by Arn Anderson. Roma ends up catching Austin with a stun gun maneuver on Austin. Roma gets the tag but the ref didn’t see it so it’s not allowed. Regal ends up coming in to work over Roma with some uppercuts. Roma catches Regal with a sunset flip but Regal kicks out. Regal catches the foot of Roma but Roma drop kicks Regal and drops him as we get two tags.

Arn comes in on fire on Austin and he ends up taking care of both guys. Arn then goes for a DDT on Austin but Regal decks him with a big time right hand. Sir William has the crutch and he is about to hit Austin with it but Austin stops and Arn ends up driving Austin into Sir William. Arn then rolls up Austin and gets the 1-2-3. Your winners and new WCW Tag Team Champions….Arn Anderson & Paul Roma!

Recap:
This match didn’t have nearly the amount of time as the Beach Blast match so it wasn’t nearly as good as that match. Regal just didn’t fit with Austin, even though they worked well together. It just looked off and the match never really clicked if you ask me. The match isn’t bad but it’s nothing special either. I would check it out if you are interested but you really aren’t missing anything.

Post Match Interview: Arn Anderson & Paul Roma

Roma tells us that this is what the Horsemen are all about. Willing to change on a dime and be able to handle any challenge that comes there way. People said that Roma didn’t have what it took to be a Horsemen but Arn believed in him and that is all it took. Roma says this is what it means to be a Horsemen and he is proud to call himself one. Arn says that adversity introduces a man to himself. Arn says they tried to pull the grand swerve on them. Arn says being a Horsemen means thinking on your feet and adapting. Arn says you work together and achieve their goal. Arn says this was there goal and that is becoming the champs. Arn says you can call them whatever you want but tonight you can call them champs.

Match 2: 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Bobby Eaton

They are going back and forth early until Eaton drops Scorpio with a right hand to gain control of the match. Eaton picks up Scorpio and tries to throw him to the outside but Scorpio holds on and hits a shoulder and then jumps over Eaton and rolls him up for a 2 count but Bobby gets up quickly and ends up nailing Scorpio with a nice clothesline. Eaton comes charging into the corner but Scorpio falls on his ass as Eaton runs head first into he corner. Scorpio then pulls himself up to the top rope from the sitting on the mat position and hits Eaton with a beautiful cross body for a 2 count. That was pretty damn awesome and a nice looking set of moves.

Scorpio continues the control with a nice drop kick and then a head lock. Scorpio stands on the wrist of Eaton and ends up jumping off it and hitting a double leg drop on the arm of Eaton. Scorpio goes for a cross body but Eaton moves out of the way as Scorpio crashes to the mat and Eaton takes control. Scorpio gets out of an arm bar with a brutal looking back elbow. Scorpio then picks up Eaton and puts him on the top rope and ends up hitting him with a drop kick while he is sitting on the top rope. It sends Eaton to the outside and Scorpio hits him with a nice cross body.

Scorpio was going for irish whips into the corner until Eaton grabs him and hits him with an arm breaker Eaton then hits a nice swinging neck breaker followed by an elbow off the top rope. We have a nice little match going on here between two really good wrestlers. They exchange blows until Scorpio hits a nice spinning kick. Scorpio then goes to the top rope and hits the 450 splash for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….2 Cold Scorpio!

Recap:
This match was pretty dang good. It didn’t drag with rest holds and all that but it got to the point. Both guys had some nice aerial moves and they really went at it. It was fast paced and fluid and Scorpio looked great. He did some things that just weren’t being done on American television during this time. It’s refreshing to see somebody doing these things. It’s a shame Scorpio never really amounted to much because he was so damn talented. From what I’ve seen its because he preferred recreational activities instead of his profession.

Match 3: Mask vs. Guitar: Johnny B. Badd vs. Maxx Payne

Badd is in the ring and trying to figure out where he wants to shoot off his Badd Blaster but Payne grabs him from the outside and racks the knee on the apron. Payne keeps control with elbows on the ground and right hands. Badd ducks a clothesline and tries to get Maxx down to the mat but doesn’t succeed as Payne ducks a cross body to keep control. Payne drops Badd with a side suplex and he ends up ripping off the mask of Badd. However, Badd has a second mask on under his original mask. Badd ends up hitting a nice head scissor on Maxx Payne but Payne gets right up and drops Badd with a clothesline to keep control of the match.

Payne slams Badd on the mat with the arm on the back to start working on the arm to get him ready for the Payne Killer. Maxx goes for a big splash off the middle rope but Badd rolls out of the way and goes for the pin right away and he gets the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Johnny B. Badd!

Recap:
Well, that was kind of shitty. Maxx dominates the match and then does the job after missing one splash off the middle rope? What garbage. This match was way to short for a feud that they were going with between these two. There really isn’t much to see here and it’s worth skipping if you ask me.

Post Match Interview:

Jesse gets up right away and interviews Badd who has Norma Gene (Maxx’s guitar). Badd says what its like to lose something that means a lot to you Maxx. Johnny B. Badd says in 3 days on WCW Saturday Night he is going to show the world what Johnny B. Badd really looks like. Badd then says its a good day to be a Badd man. He then tells us that it’s time for some guitar lessons.

Flair for the Gold: Shockmaster Debuts

Flair says we are live on TBS and we are at the Clash of the Champions. Flair asks the fans if Fifi is all the way live. Flair says that we have two huge guests on his show and it is none other than Sting and the British Bulldog. Flair says we are talking about Fall Brawl 93 and the War Games. Davey is coked out of his mind and just starts yelling that everyone is cooking and that after tonight he will be cooking when he becomes the WCW champion. Sid and Harlem Heat end up interrupting Sting and Bulldog. Flair says that Sting and Bulldog are going to introduce their special tag team partner.

Sid says that it seems to him that if Sting and Bulldog were as smart as they think they are then they wouldn’t have waited this close to War Games to introduce who their partner is. Bulldog then says we are going to tell them who their partner is. Bulldog says he is going to let Sting introduce the partner. Sting says their partner is going to shock the world because their partner is none other than THE SHOCKMASTER!!!! As everyone knows, he comes through the wall and falls on his face and loses his mask. He quickly gets it back on and just stands there doing nothing. What an infamous spot and it is so damn hilarious. Such a great moment.

Sid just starts yelling at the Shockmaster and he says he doesn’t give a damn who he is. Then this stupid ass voice starts talking, which is Ole Anderson, he says that Sid is the man that rules the world but they call him the Shockmaster. He says that Sid has ruled the world long enough but he better get ready. He then says come after him because he is ready. He says with Sting and Bulldog plus Dustin Rhodes they will see them at the Fall Brawl War Games.

Match 4: WCW Television Title Match: Paul Orndorff (c) vs. Ricky Steamboat

We get Michael Buffer introductions for this one. It looks like the lighting is going out in the building a little bit during the introductions but I am not sure what the cause was. Interesting to say the least. Steamboat gets the advantage early with a tight head lock on Orndorff. They then get in a test of strength type move out of a top wrist lock but Steamboat ends up keeping his balance and pushing his way out of it and he ends up getting Orndorff in a side head lock out of the move. Steamboat ends up going for a cross body on Orndorff but he ends up going flying over the top rope and out to the entrance ramp.

Orndorff gets him back in the ring and ends up dropping Steamboat with an elbow to the top of the head for a 2 count. Steamboat does a leap frog on Orndorff but when he turns around Orndorff drops him with a body slam and then tries to pin him 4-5 times but can only get a 2 count. Back to the head lock we go. Orndorff hits a move, goes for multiple pins, and back to the head lock we go. He’s done this 2-3 times in a row now. What shit.

Orndorff slams the head of Steamboat into the mat, 3-4 straight pin falls, and no head lock. I’m shocked. Orndorff ends up throwing Steamboat to the outside but when he tries to get in Orndorff nails him with some boots to the head. Orndorff goes to ram Steamboat head first into the turnbuckle but Steamboat blocks and Orndorff goes head first into the corner. Steamboat goes to the top and drops a chop on Orndorff as the pace starts to pick up here. Steamboat ends up hitting Orndorff with a belly to back suplex for a 2 count.

Steamboat starts laying in the chops and ends up nailing Orndorff with one that sends him up and over to the outside. Steamboat then runs and hits a flying cross body onto Orndorff on the outside. Orndorff dives in from the apron and splashes steamboat and tries to pin him 2-3 times. Orndorff thinks he won but Steamboat rolls him up and damn near pins him. Orndorff then goes for the pile driver but Steamboat blocks it and lands on top of Orndorff. Orndorff bridges out of the pin but Steamboat hits him with a backslide for another near fall. Orndorff has enough and drops Steamboat with a clothesline.

Steamboat hits a charging Orndorff with a big foot as he goes to the outside for a big cross body that Orndorff rolls out of and gets a 2 count. Orndorff goes for a body slam on Steamboat but Steamboat ends up rolling Orndorff up out of the body slam and gets the 1-2-3. Your winner and new WCW Television Champion….Ricky Steamboat!

After the match Orndorff ends up attacking Steamboat from behind with a knee that sends Steamboat out to the entrance ramp. Orndorff then picks up Steamboat and drops him with a piledriver on the entrance ramp and the WCW TV Title.

Recap:
This match was decent but nothing special. I was expecting more from these two but it just never came. Orndorff did the same spots over and over every chance he got. Like I stated he did one move, 3-4 pin attempts, and then a head lock. Just real lazy stuff and it took away from the match. The multiple pin attempt spot was pretty nice the first time he did it but doing it 3-4 times in a match is just over kill. Steamboat was great, per his usual, but this match was disappointed because I was expecting more to be honest.

Backstage Interview: Colossal Kongs & Harley Race

Bischoff says this all started on Saturday Night the week prior and it is going to end tonight. Race says that Flair made the biggest mistake of his career when he suckered punch Race on national television. Race says he had the bait going the way he wanted but he added insult to it. Race says that when these monsters get done with Sting and Flair there will be grease spots in the ring where the existence of Sting and Flair have been. Race says that nobody insults him as he and the Kongs walk off.

Match 5: Ric Flair/Sting vs. Colossal Kongs

They are getting their money worth out of Michael Buffer tonight as he looks to be introducing the last 4 matches here on Clash of Champions. The Kongs go for a double clothesline on Flair but he moves out of the way and Sting ends up hitting one of the Kongs with a big drop kick. Sting ends up hitting the other one with a drop kick. Sting then picks up each one of the Kongs and body slams them one after the other. That was pretty damn impressive.

The Kongs roll to the outside and regroup with Race. Race is pissed off and is yelling that that was impossible. All four men get in the ring as Flair just lays in the chops to one of the Kongs. Flair then takes the Kong and throws him to the outside. Sting is working the other Kong over in the corner. The Kong goes for a big elbow but Sting moves out of the way. Sting hits another 2 drop kicks and a big time clothesline on the Kong in the ring. Sting then whips him into the corner and hits the Stinger Splash. On the outside of the ring Flair and Race are going at it. Sting then hits a big splash off the top rope and get the 1-2-3. Your winners by pinfall….Ric Flair & Sting!

Recap:
There was so much shit going on at once here but the match itself never really became an actual match. Sting and Flair just dominated these guys and sent them on their way. The body slam spot was damn impressive and sweet to see. Sting looked like a million bucks here and was awesome during this time. This match was super short so it had no time to suck but it’s a fun little match thats worth checking out at least once.

Ringside Interview: Ric Flair & Sting

Tony said that this Saturday it will be the two going for the NWA Heavyweight Title. Flair said it looked like Sting didn’t need any help out there tonight and that he was just out there to make sure Harley Race didn’t stick his nose in. Flair says that this Saturday night it is a different story. Flair says that he and Sting will renew it and go at it. Flair says that he may be the Stinger but he is the Nature Boy. Sting says that he is the Nature Boy and he is the Stinger.

Sting says on Saturday Night he is hoping to be a 4x time champion. Sting says win, lose, or draw Nature Boy he has a lot of respect for him. Flair says the feeling is mutual and that there are few men in this sport who’s hand he will shake. Flair also says that there are few men who he will stand side by side with or hold their heart and Sting is one of them. Flair then says they may not be best friends but they know how to do it as we wrap up the interview.

Match 6: Road Warrior Hawk/Dustin Rhodes vs. Rick Rude/Equalizer

Rude does his typical promo at the start of the match. Rude says he wants all the fat, out of shape, Daytona dirtbags to keep their mouths shut as he takes his robe off and shows everyone what a sexy man looks like. The Camaro Z28 comes rolling in as the mystery partner is introduced. Road Warrior Animal gets out of the car and appears to be the mystery partner. Rude says that they knew Animal was going to be their partner and that they prepared for him to be his partner. Animal calls Rude a fool because there is more than one Road Warrior but there are two. Road Warrior Hawk then becomes the partner of Dustin Rhodes.

Hawk and Rick Rude start this one off. They tie up and Hawk just picks up Rude and throws him into the corner. We get a test of strength with a greco roman knuckle lock. Hawk gets Rude down and ends up stomping on his hand and then hits him with a right hand that sends Rude over to the Equalizer to make the tag. Hawk goes to the outside to follow the Equalizer but ends up getting caught when he tries to get back into the ring. Hawk nails the Equalizer with a big clothesline in the corner and he goes for it again but the Equalizer blocks it with a big boot. Equalizer then tags in Rude and he goes right to work on the lower back of Hawk.

Rude gets a chin lock on Hawk but Hawk ends up standing up with Rude on his shoulders. Hawk tags in Rhodes and he comes off the top rope and hits Rude with a clothesline off the shoulders of Hawk. Dustin then starts laying in the right hands as he whips Rude into the ropes and hits him with an atomic drop. Dustin then hits Rude with a big ass back body drop and it looks like Rude’s head smacked the mat. That didn’t look good.

Rhodes goes for a monkey flip but Rude holds on and prevents it from happening. Rude then hits a big ass clothesline that turns Dustin inside out. Rude heads up top and drops a forearm to the head of Rhodes. Rude gets Rhodes into his corner and he tags in the Equalizer, who comes in and just lays in the boots. Equalizer hits a terrible looking back elbow and gets a 2 count. Equalizer then hits a one handed choke slam as he goes over and tags in Rude. Rude tags in the Equalizer and he comes in and hits Rude with a clothesline when Dustin ducked out of the way.

Rhodes finally tags in Hawk and he coms in and takes out both the Equalizer and Rude. This is cluster city as nobody knows what the hell is going on. Hawk hits a double clothesline on Rude and Equalizer and then he drops both of them face first to the mat. Hawk then sends Rude over the top rope with a clothesline and then does the same to the Equalizer. Hawk suplexes Rude back into the ring but the Equalizer hits him from behind. Equalizer picks up Rhodes and is going for a body slam but Hawk jumps off the top rope and drives Rhodes into the Equalizer and the ref counts the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Dustin Rhodes & Road Warrior Hawk!

Recap:
This match was trash for the most part. Equalizer was terrible and the ending just got confusing as hell. The commentators had no idea what was going on and they took away from the match a little bit. They said the ref wasn’t going to allow the Hawk tag but he didn’t do anything to stop it either. That caused all the confusion for Tony and Jesse and with the commentary not knowing what was going on it messed up the ending. It just wasn’t sold properly. Also, why in the world is the Equalizer in a match with these guys involved? He had no business here and you could tell, the guy just sucked.

Match 7: WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Vader (c) vs. Davey Boy Smith

We get the Buffer intros again. He lets us know that the disqualification rule has been waived for this match. “Lets get ready to rumble” as we get this main event going. Vader starts out on the ramp so Bulldog goes out after him and tackles him down. Bulldog then gets on top and starts laying in the right hands until Vader reverses it and starts laying in the rights of his own. Vader already has the mask off as he drops the Bulldog with a short arm clothesline. Vader goes for a suplex on the apron but the Bulldog ends up nailing him with a delayed vertical suplex right on the run way. Damn the strength the Bulldog had is just ridiculous.

Bulldog follows up the suplex with a nice clothesline and then a standing drop kick to Vader. Bulldog then clothesline Vader back into the ring. Davey Boy goes for a slingshot splash into the ring but Vader gets the knees up to block it as both guys are laid out in the ring. Vader gets the Bulldog into the corner and he starts laying in the lefts and rights. Vader throws Bulldog to the outside. Bulldog rests on the guard rail so Vader comes charging at him and looks for a splash but Bulldog moves out of the way. Bulldog then picks up Vader and drops him stomach first on the guard rail.

Bulldog picks up Vader and hits him with a samoan drop. Bulldog walked around the ring with Vader on his back like it was nothing. Bulldog gets a 2 before Vader gets the foot on the rope. Vader crushes Bulldog with a big time double forearm swat that just leaves Bulldog laying. Vader then drops a big ass elbow to the inner thigh of the Bulldog. Vader then drops the Bulldog with another clothesline. Vader then picks up the Bulldog and hits him with a samoan drop of his own. Vader then goes outside and to the top rope as he goes for a big splash and he nails the Bulldog with it however Bulldog ends up kicking out at 2.

Bulldog goes for a sunset flip but Vader goes for a drop down but Bulldog gets out of the way and he gets a 2 count. Vader whips the Bulldog into the corner and Bulldog ends up going in upside down. Vader then drops a big splash on the back of the Bulldog. Bulldog ducks a clothesline and hits Vader with a crucifix pin for a 2 count. Vader just destroys the Bulldog in the corner with forearms, lefts, and rights. Vader ends up going to the top rope again but this time the Bulldog drops Vader with a drop kick and he falls back into the ring.

Bulldog goes charging into the corner but Vader gets the boot up and drops the Bulldog. Vader then hits the Vader Splash off the middle rope for a 2 1/2 count. Vader then goes up to the middle rope and he goes for his forearm smack but Bulldog ends up catching Vader with a power slam but he ends up hitting the ref as well and knocks him down. Bulldog then picks up Vader for a big suplex but Race gets in the ring and chop blocks Bulldog as Vader falls on top of him and we get the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall and still WCW Heavyweight Champion….Vader!

After the match Bulldog is attacking Race until Vader gets him off of Race. Vader gets on the apron but Cactus Jack comes out of no where and tackles Vader as they start brawling. Both guys quickly separate as the show goes off the air with an ad for Fall Brawl 93.

Recap:
This match wasn’t bad and it was a nice way to end this feud. Bulldog was just ridiculous with the strength and power that he had inside the ring. The suplexes and samoan drops that he did with ease is just remarkable. Vader did his normal and was so damn believable that it’s crazy. The way he throws his punches just made you think that he was a legit bad ass and somebody you didn’t want to mess with. All in all this was a solid way to end the show and this is definitely a match worth checking out at least once.

Show Recap:
This show from top to bottom wasn’t very good. There are some good things, some bad things, and then the memorable things. The opening match was decent but Regal just didn’t work out as Austin’s partner. Something about it just didn’t click with me and it took away from the match some. I can’t really explain why but it just did so its not something I would recommend going out of your way to see.

The next match between 2 Cold and Eaton was damn good because both guys kept moving and never really took a break. There was a lot of high flying moves between the two and it made for a good match. The next match wasn’t to bad either. It was short and sweet and got its point across. Thats what a match is supposed to do. After that we had the Flair for the Gold with the Shockmaster debut. You almost feel sorry for the guy that he has had to live with this screw up for all these years but it’s so damn funny. I picked this show because it was in August, it was just a coincidence that it was the Shockmaster debut.

The 4th match between Steamboat and Orndorff was a disappointment because I felt like both guys could have done so much more. Orndorff just did the same spots over and over and over again while he had control and it got predictable and boring after the first time he did it. Steamboat looked good because he always looked good but this was just one of those matches that could have been better than it was. The Sting/Flair vs. Kongs match was just a squash and a way to promote the match between Sting and Flair on Saturday Night the following weekend. Nothing more nothing less but Sting looked damn good.

The Road Warriors coming back was a pleasant surprise and was pretty cool to see. Other than that, the match was shit. The Equalizer was terrible and had no business being in that match but what can you do. Rhodes and Rude looked really good and Hawk got in his normal offense but thats about it. The finish was messed up somewhere because the commentators had no clue what was going on and it took away from the match it self.

The main event was solid as both guys came to work. Bulldog used his power to throw Vader around a little bit and it was a great sight to see. Vader doing his typical offense but always maintaining that monster billing was very well done. Just a pretty solid main event that got the job done. I like the match quite a bit.

So, there you have it: Clash of the Champions XXIV. Like I stated before there is nothing great but not a lot of terrible things either. There are 2-3 things on this card that you could find entertaining and thats a solid tv special if you ask me. It’s not a banger from top to bottom but you would have fun watching this show because it goes pretty fast. Well that does it for this one. I hope you have enjoyed this episode of the Event Center as we continue with our summer series here. Next up on the list is one that was requested and one that intrigues me so I am looking forward to getting that one started. Until then, I hope you continue to read the content as we continue to churn it out. Thanks again for reading.

The Event Center: WWF SummerSlam 1991

Introduction:
Welcome back to CrazyMax’s Event Center. We are right in the middle of our summer review series. I hope you have enjoyed the BBQ’s and the fireworks so far but we have a lot more coming your way. This time we are heading back to the Summer of 1991 and we are hitting up SummerSlam. The card itself is nothing to write home about but we do have an instant classic between Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect. Theres a lot going on with the main event and we have a classic scene or two when it comes to Randy and Elizabeth’s wedding. It’s time to get this one started so lets get to it.

Event Information:
Date: August 26th, 1992
Location: Madison Square Garden in New York City
Attendance: 20,000
Main Event: Hulk Hogan/Ultimate Warrior vs. Triangle of Terror

Show Opening:

Vince welcomes us to SummerSlam by saying living is anything but easy because it’s time for SummerSlam. He then lets us know that a Match Made in Heaven is going to happen because Elizabeth and the Macho Man has invited us all to the wedding between the two. Vince says nuptials turn to napalm when we go to the Match Made in Hell! We have the Triangle of Terror vs. the team that is on fire of Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior.

We head inside of Madison Square Garden where Gorilla welcomes us to New York City and to SummerSlam. We head ringside where Gorilla, Heenan, and Piper are standing. Gorilla says everyone is waiting for the two big features of the Match Made in Heaven and the Match Made in Hell. Heenan says Savage is going to tie knot but it will be a noose around his neck because he is getting married tonight. Piper talks about the Match Made in Hell. He says there is more turmoil in this match than in Russia. Piper says Hogan hates Warrior and Warrior hates everyone so let’s get ready. Gorilla then sends us up to the Fink and to our first match on SummerSlam.

Match 1: British Bulldog/Texas Tornado/The Dragon vs. Power N Glory/Warlord

This one starts off with Paul Roma and Ricky Steamboat in the ring. Roma gets control early and ends up dropping Steamboat with a drop kick. He pushes his luck a little to much and when he comes off the middle rope, the Dragon catches him with an arm drag as he starts working the arm of Roma. We get some back and forth action until the Dragon hits Roma with another arm drag and a drop kick that sends Roma over to his corner and tagging in Hercules. Dragon retaliates by tagging in the Texas Tornado and he comes in and starts working the arm of Hercules.

Tornado lays in quite a few right hands but Hercules stops the momentum with an eye rake as he tags in the Warlord as the Tornado tags in Bulldog. Bulldog finally gets the Warlord down with 2 big clotheslines and then he picks up the Warlord and drops him with a vertical suplex for a 2 count. Dragon gets tagged in and he comes in with the chops and karate moves to the Warlord. Dragon gets stupid and tries a monkey flip on the Warlord but he holds on and the Dragon gets laid out as the heel team gets the control.

The heel team continues to work over the back of the Dragon as Roma hits a nice looking snap suplex then a back breaker where he keeps holding him and drops him 3-4 times on his knee. Hercules comes in and he continues to work the lower back of the Dragon. The tags are becoming more frequent for the Warlord and Power N Glory as each guy takes a turn working over the back of the the Dragon with some nice double team moves out of tags. The Dragon nearly gets control of the match but Hercules ends up stopping that with a nice clothesline across the top rope.

Warlord ends up going to the middle rope and goes for an elbow but the Dragon gets the feet up and ends up getting the tag to the Tornado. He comes in lays in the right hands to everyone. The Warlord actually hits a sunset flip but the Tornado ends up tagging the Bulldog in and he comes off the middle rope but Warlord catches but Tornado drops him with the big ass right hand. Roma ends up getting the tag in and Bulldog nails him with the running power slam for a 2 count. All hell is breaking loose and guys are missing spots but the Dragon comes off the top rope with the high cross body for the 1-2-3. Your winners by pinfall….The Dragon/Texas Tornado/British Bulldog!

Recap:
This was a pretty good opener here. The heels didn’t have control for long so there really was no time for rest holds and dragging this out. The Dragon sold well and they quickly got to the hot tag finish which is what you want for an opener. They got a little mixed up on the finish as the Bulldog hit the power slam and was looking for the tag but then he went for a pin and Roma ends up kicking out of his finisher, which made no sense. Outside of that, this was a pretty decent opener and worth checking out just because of the star power on the good guys side of the action. Crazy all three of them on the same team.

Backstage Interview: Mr. Perfect & The Coach

Mooney is standing by with Perfect and Coach in the locker room. Mooney says he is standing by with the Intercontinental champion but Perfect cuts him off and tells him to get it right. Perfect says he is the greatest Intercontinental champion of all time and tonight history is going to be made. It is the excellence of execution vs. perfection. It is Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect. Perfect says the intercontinental belt says wrestling champion on it and to be a champion you have to be perfect and Bret isn’t perfect. Perfect says there is only one guy in the WWF that is perfect and we are looking at him.

Match 2: WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Mr. Perfect (c) vs. Bret Hart

With Bret in the ring Piper drops this doozy on commentary “everybody here is thinking pink.” I think most people are thinking wrestling but hard telling what the hell Piper is thinking about. Bret starts off fast with a shoulder block and a hip toss. The hip toss spins Perfect around and to the outside as he leaves the ring furious. The way Perfect sells the hip toss is just amazing. He was so good at selling and it appears the guy has springs in his boots because he just flies around everywhere. Bret ends up hitting Perfect with a crucifix and damn near gets the win early on here but Perfect gets out of it.

The psychology already kicking in as Perfect pulls the hair but Bret ends up pulling the hair right back as Bret holds on to the head lock. They have a pretty good exchange with some near falls before Bret gets it back in the head lock. Bret gets hit with a body slam by Perfect but Bret ends up kicking Perfect off him and hitting with a body slam of his own only for Perfect to kick Bret off him. Bret ends up tripping Perfect and sending him to the mat face first and he follows that up with a clothesline to the outside of the ring. The action is fast furious early on here and both guys just look awesome.

Perfect acts like he is just going to leave but Bret ends up going out after him and ripping the tights of Perfect. The commentators finally acknowledged the injured back of Perfect and acts like he just got the injury. Perfect finally gets control with a forearm smash to the face of Bret. Perfect starts working over the back and the midsection of Bret. Bret keeps trying to get in to the ring but Perfect ends up stopping and on the last try Perfect nails Bret and sends him flying into the guard rail but Bret ends up landing on a photographer so he doesn’t really hit the guard rail. Pretty sweet spot there.

Perfect ends up whipping Bret into the corner with authority and he damn near gets the 3 count but Bret kicks out. Perfect ends up hitting his flip over neck snap for another 2 count. Perfect sends Bret to the outside with a drop kick. Perfect then goes out after him and they exchange some lefts and rights. Perfect then goes in and climbs to the top rope. Bret ends up joining him on the top rope and Perfect ends up nailing Bret with a right hand that sends him crashing to the mat. Perfect ends up falling off the top rope as well but he lands on Bret for a 2 count. That was awesome.

Perfect just tosses Bret across the ring by the hair. I have a feeling we are going to see that spot again in just a little bit. Perfect gets a sleeper hold on Bret as we get our first rest hold of the match. Bret gets out of the hold and goes for the crucifix again but Perfect ends up dropping him with a samoan drop for a 2 count. Perfect sends Bret into the corner chest first. Again I hate that spot and thank goodness only he and Owen are crazy enough to do it. Perfect then goes for the Perfect Plex but Bret ends up kicking out at 2 1/2. Piper starts marking out on commentary because he kicked out of the Perfect Plex.

Bret starts his come back and ends up dropping Perfect with two straight atomic drops. Bret then returns the favor and grabs Perfect by the hair and throws him across the ring but Perfect takes it one step further and racks himself on the steel post on the inside. We get a nice suplex from Bret for a 2 count. Bret gets his normal offense in such as the back breaker and the elbow off the middle rope. Bret is arguing with the ref so Perfect rolls up him up for a 2 count but and Perfect ends up on the outside. Bret whips Perfect into the steel post and Perfect ends up flipping after he hits it. Its amazing what Perfect is doing with a bad back.

Bret starts working the leg of Perfect as he is starting to work towards the Sharpshooter. Bret ends up going for the Sharpshooter but the Coach gets on the apron and he gets floored by the Hitman. Perfect ends up kicking the middle rope into the nuts of Bret and racks him while the ref wasn’t watching. This match is so damn good as are both Bret and Perfect. Perfect goes for a leg drop on the stomach of Bret but Bret ends up catching him and getting Perfect in the Sharpshooter. The ref calls for the bell immediately and Bret legs go right away so he doesn’t further injure the back of Perfect. Your winner by way of submission and new WWF Intercontinental Champion….Bret Hart!

After the match Bret grabs the tights of Perfect and ends up ripping them off as Perfect is trying to get out of the ring.

Post Match Interview: Stu Hart

Lord Alfred is standing by with Stu Hart. Hayes says this is a highly emotional scene. Hayes asks Stu to tell us what he thinks of his son and Stu starts talking and says that it is wonderful Alfred and then Hayes pulls the mic away from him and says that Stu is speechless right now as Stu is trying to talk to him. Bret’s brother Bruce shows up as the Hart family is celebrating the title victory.

Recap:
This match is so damn good from beginning to end. Both guys did the little things that really only the great ones do. Little things that make a good match become great. The hair pulling early on, the trading of hair tosses, and other things that really stick out. This is an instant classic and one match I’m sure most have already seen but it is something that is worth checking out every once in a while so you can two all time greats at their best. Just an awesome awesome match.

Backstage Interview: Bushwhackers & Andre The Giant

They show what Earthquake did to Andre the Giant from WWF Superstars. Butch asks Luke if he is ready and Luke says he is. Butch says they are going to wipe out the Earthquake and Typhoon from the ring. Luke says they are going to lick the Natural Disasters all over the place, again what the hell are these guys on during this show? Butch says when they are done licking and eating them then they are going to feed them to Andre. Andre says that will be his chance to get even.

Match 3: Natural Disasters vs. Bushwhackers

Butch and Typhoon start this one and of course Typhoon gets the advantage early but Butch ends up biting the ass of Typhoon. All four guys get in the ring as the Bushwhackers whip Typhoon right into the Earthquake. They then use Earthquake to do the battery ram on Typhoon as the Bushwhackers send both guys out of the ring early on here. Bushwhackers spend to much time celebrating as Earthquake comes in and starts pummeling Butch and working on his lower back.

Earthquake misses a big elbow as Butch tries to get a pin but Earthquake holds on to him and ends up hitting the elbow anyways. Typhoon gets in and he continues to work over Butch and his lower back. During the match here Heenan says that he has found out that Hogan is in the building so he is leaving the broadcast booth to confront him with the real world champion. Meanwhile, Earthquake continues to work the lower back of Butch with bear hugs and back breakers.

Typhoon ends up getting hit by Earthquake and this gives Butch enough time to tag in Luke. Luke comes in and does his best but it ends up causing all four guys to get back into the ring. The Bushwhackers hit both guys with a battery ram but it does no damage. Earthquake goes outside and damn near gets hit by Andre. Earthquake ends up back in the ring and he squashes Luke between himself and Typhoon. Earthquake gets the tag and he ends up hitting the Earthquake for the 1-2-3. Your winners by pinfall….The Natural Disasters!

After the match the Natural Disasters end up going to the outside to confront Andre the Giant. Before they could do anything the Legion of Doom show up out of no where and back up the Natural Disasters. LOD end up chasing the Natural Disasters through the ring and out of the building before they could do anything. Andre ends up nailing them with his crutch as they leave the ring.

Recap:
On paper you would think this match sucks and you are probably right. However, it didn’t go long enough to drag on and they did enough to make you think the Bushwhackers had a chance. The Disasters sold pretty well for the Whackers and the dynamic of having Andre wasn’t all that bad either. The ending was good with LOD coming out so they could start that feud with the Natural Disasters. This wasn’t a classic by any means but it did what it was supposed to do and thats really all you can ask for with the Bushwhackers involved.

Bobby Heenan Confronts Hulk Hogan

They show Heenan outside of the door of Hulk Hogan and he is knocking on Hogan’s door. Heenan says on behalf of the Real World Champion Ric Flair, he wants to challenge Hogan at any time or any place. Hogan then slams the door on Heenan’s face. Heenan is irate and says that he won’t embarrass him like that and then Heenan looks up and tells them to turn the damn camera off as he walks back towards ringside.

They show the Macho Man in his locker room talking to fans about his wedding.

Backstage Interview: Ted Dibiase & Sensational Sherri

They show some of the disgusting things that Ted Dibiase made Virgil do as his body guard. Dibiase tells us to take a look at the look of humiliation of Virgil. DiBiase says that humiliation is going to be minute compared to the humiliation he is going to suffer through tonight at the hands of the Million Dollar Man. DiBIase says that Virgil has come to challenge the master in his city, New York City, for his Million Dollar Belt. DiBiase says that Virgil better go and cancel all of those plans of celebration that he has. DiBiase says that he will leave Virgil face down in a gutter and that Virgil can pick anyone he wants in this town. DiBiase says he is not an insensitive man because he has left one thing for Virgil and it is his crying towel. DiBiase does his laugh as he walks off. Such a great promo here.

Match 4: Million Dollar Title Match; Ted Dibiase (c) vs. Virgil

First things first, Sherri is looking hot as hell tonight. Anyways, this one starts off fast when Virgil gets in the ring and pulls DiBiase off the middle rope and starts laying in the right hands. We get a big back body drop and 2-3 clotheslines by Virgil and on that last clothesline he sends DiBiase flying over the top rope. Virgil is on fire early here. Virgil heads out after DiBiase and he rams him head first into the steel steps before he throws him back into the ring. Virgil ends up hitting DiBiase with an atomic drop that sends DiBiase up and over to the outside.

Meanwhile, Heenan shows back up to the commentary table. Virgil goes for a cross body to the outside but DiBiase moves out of the way and Virgil goes crashing to the floor. DiBiase goes to the outside and throws Virgil knee first into the steps. DiBiase gets Virgil back into the ring and he ends up dropping him with a nice clothesline and then DiBiase does his classic fist drops to keep control of the match. DiBiase continues to work over the neck and head area to soften him up for the Million Dollar Dream. DiBiase ends up hitting an ax handle off the middle rope for a 2 1/2 count. DiBiase ends up going for a clothesline but Virgil ducks and gets DiBiase in the Million Dollar Dream himself. Sherri ends up getting frustrated so she gets in the ring and nails Virgil in the back of the head to end the match.

The ref then talks to Howard Finkel and says that the ref has every right to disqualify DiBiase for outside interference. Fink says that the ref has rendered a decision and the first thing is that Sherri has to return to the dressing or she will face permanent suspension. Fink then says that the match between Virgil and the Million Dollar will continue. WWF officials come out to make Sherri leave as the ref starts the 10 count on both guys.

Virgil ends up getting the better end of the exchange by ramming DiBiase head first into the turnbuckle. Virgil continues the momentum with right hands and not much else. We get a double reversal on an irish whip and Virgil ends up running into the referee and knocks him out. DiBiase then goes over to the corner and starts talking shit to Piper. DiBiase ends up hitting Virgil with a few suplexes and then a pile driver. DiBiase then goes over to the corner and removes the padding to expose the post. DiBiase picks up Virgil and goes to ram him head first into the exposed turnbuckle but Virgil ends up blocking it and ramming DiBiase into the exposed turnbuckle 2 times. Virgil crawls over to DiBiase and pins him for the 1-2-3. Your winner and new Million Dollar Champion….Virgil!

Recap:
This match was all right but nothing special. DiBiase was awesome but Virgil’s offense was nothing but right hands, clothesline, and an atomic drop. He did nothing else throughout the match and that just goes to show how limited he was. DiBiase made this match what it was and thats watchable but not much else. The storyline leading up to this match and Piper on commentary make it stand out but other than that, really not much to see here.

Backstage Interview: The Mountie

Gene is standing by with the Mountie in the garage with some of New York’s finest. They show the Mountie attacking the Boss Man and shocking him with his shock stick with the help of the Nasty Boys. Gene says after the match one or the other is going to be going to the pokie. Mountie says this is the way it is going to happen Gene. Mountie says after he beats the Boss Man, the local hick cops are going to come out and drag the Boss Man to the paddy wagon. Mountie says he wants them to treat Boss Man the Mountie way. Mountie then says when they get to the back they want them to shackle the Boss Man and put him in the paddy wagon and send them to the local caboose house. Mountie then says he will see the Boss Man there. What an awesome promo.

Backstage Interview: Big Boss Man

Boss Man says the Mountie has the wrong idea. Boss Man says Mountie shouldn’t be talking to New York’s finest but he should be on his hands and knees praying to God that he makes it through the following day. Boss Man says that the Mountie will be the one who spends a hard long night in jail.

Match 5: Jailhouse Match: Big Boss Man vs. Mountie

Mountie comes out talking shit to Boss Man and he just gets floored with a big time right hand by Boss Man. They continue to exchange right hands until Boss Man drops the Mountie with a back elbow and follows that up with a big splash. Boss Man drapes Mountie over the middle rope and then runs and jumps on him. He goes for it again but this time he slides through and ends up hitting the right hand even though Jimmy Hart distracted him. Mountie ends up on the middle rope and goes for a move but Boss Man catches him and ends up dropping him with a spine buster to regain control.

Boss Man starts to work the neck and shoulder area of the Mountie. Boss Man gets distracted by Jimmy until the Mountie comes out and pushes him head first into the steel steps. Mountie ends up hitting a nice spinning back elbow on the Boss Man. Mountie continues to work over the lower back of the Boss Man. Boss Man tries to get control but he ends up going for a move in the corner but Mountie moves out of the way and keeps control of the match. Mountie drops a couple of elbows and goes for the pin for a 2 count.

Mountie ends up hitting the Boss Man with a drop kick and when he goes for the cover the Boss Man kicks out at 2 and ends up throwing the Mountie to the outside. Both guys get in the ring as the Mountie picks up the Boss Man and he dumps him with a pile driver. Mountie tries to shock the Boss Man but he moves out of the way and nails the Mountie with a right hand. Boss Man then nails the Mountie with another big time right hand uppercut. Boss Man then nails the Mountie with the Boss Man slam but the Mountie got his shoulder up at 2 1/2. Mountie goes for another pile driver but the Boss Man ends up picking the Mountie up on his back and he drops him with the Alabama slam for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….The Big Boss Man!

After the match the Boss Man drags the Mountie to the edge of the apron as the New York police officers come out and cuff him. They then drag the Mountie out of the building and to the paddy wagon. The cameras follow him all the way out to the paddy wagon which is pretty damn cool. The Mountie just keeps yelling that they can’t do this to him. The Mountie also yells that they are hurting him. There isn’t a better person to do this job than Jacques Rougeau. They show the Mountie in the back of the paddy wagon as he is kicking and screaming all the way to the caboose house.

Recap:
This match kind of sucked. The Mountie was moving so slow so it made the match drag on and on. For example, this match went a little under 10 minutes but it felt like 15 or so minutes. The Virgil/DiBiase match went about 13 minutes but it felt like it was over with in 9-10 minutes. It all depends on the pace the guys are working and the Mountie was just moving at a snails pace and it made the match kind of shit. The Alabama slam that the Boss Man hits on the Mountie is just brutal looking and the thud it made just sounded like it hurt like a son of a bitch. Other than that, there really isn’t much here to enjoy so it’s not really worth the time.

Backstage Interview: Ted Dibiase & Sensational Sherri

DiBiase comes in heated and he is telling Gene that he has something to say. DiBiase says never in the history of the World Wrestling Federation has there ever been a bigger rip off than there has been tonight. DiBIase says Virgil ripped him off because Virgil jumped him from behind and the match should have never started. DiBiase says Virgil jumped him because he knows Virgil can’t beat him. DiBiase then says the ref stops the match, kicks Sherri out, then rings the bell to restart the match. DiBiase says that Virgil stole it and that is the only way he can get the belt and he will pay.

Backstage Interview: Bret Hart

Bret says it doesn’t get any better than this in being the new Intercontinental champion. Bret says this is the greatest day for the Hitman. Bret also says that he has been wanting to prove for a long time to Mr. Perfect that nobody is Perfect. Bret says Perfect found out the hard way what the Excellence of Execution is all about. Bret says Perfect just wasn’t good enough tonight and that we are looking at the Intercontinental champion.

Backstage Interview: Natural Disasters & Jimmy Hart

Jimmy Hart is going insane because he can’t be with the Mountie. Jimmy says he wants his lawyers on the phone right now because nobody is going to get away with this. Jimmy says they were ripped off. Gene says the Natural Disasters stuck their noses where it didn’t belong. Typhoon says they are going to eat up, chew up, and spit out the Legion of Doom. Earthquake says the LOD are the ones who stuck their nose in their match because they are the ones who had the problem with Andre the Giant. Earthquake says that LOD prevented them from getting their hands on Andre so LOD will be history.

Backstage Interview: Big Boss Man

Boss Man starts out with a joke and asks Mooney whats a bird that can’t fly. Mooney isn’t sure so Boss Man tells him its a jail bird. Boss Man says that is exactly what the Canadian Mountie is. Boss Man says this is just a small sample of what the Mountie is going to have to go through. Boss Man says he promised to every man, woman, and child that he is the law and order of the WWF. Boss Man says the Mountie is a criminal and a bad cop and that he is the law and order plain and simple.

Backstage Interview: Macho Man Randy Savage

Macho Man is on the phone again talking to a fan on the 900 number. Macho tells Gene that he is busy. Gene then says that he is sure Elizabeth will be ready and able to talk a lot so he is going to head over there. Savage quickly hangs up the phone and stops Gene from leaving. Savage then starts rambling about nothing of importance and then Gene sends us to a 5 minute recess.

They take us ringside and to the commentary table where Gorilla, Bobby, and Piper discuss both the Match Made in Heaven and the Match Made in Hell.

They show the Mountie arriving at the police station. Mountie asks if they know who he is and he says he is the Mountie. Mountie then starts reading the rights to the police officers. He just keeps yelling “I AM THE MOUNTIE!!!!”.

Backstage Interview: Nasty Boys & Jimmy Hart

Jimmy says that they better not hurt one hair on the Mountie’s body because his lawyers are heading to the police station right now to take care of it. Mooney tells Jimmy he will have to stop worrying about the Mountie for a moment because the Nasty Boys are going to be squaring off against the LOD. Saggs says that LOD and Jack Tunney got together to make the rules for this match. He then says that Tunney won’t be there to help the LOD because this is one trip to Nastyville that the LOD won’t be coming back from. Knobbs then starts yelling and telling us that there is no more crying or whining because it is the Nastys vs. the LOD for the titles. Knobbs says the heat is on and it is melting their face and that this is their last trip to Nastyville.

Mooney tells Jimmy to stick around because they have more things going on down at the police station with the Mountie. They are trying to take the picture of the Mountie. The photographer says that the Boss Man kicked the Mounties butt and he ends up looking up as they snap the picture. Jimmy Hart says that they can’t take a picture of the Mountie because it is an invasion of privacy. Hart says that somebody is going to pay for this.

Backstage Interview: Legion of Doom

Gene tells us the Tag Team Titles are on the line in a no disqualification match. Animal says no count out, no disqualification and that is right up the alley of the LOD. Animal says that they are getting ready for their match so they can take the titles away from the Nasty Boys and then they hear all this commotion and they look through the curtain. They then see the Natural Disasters trying to take out Andre 2 on 1. Animal said that LOD decided to even up the odds and how did the Disasters like that. Animal says they will take them on any time any where.

Hawk says that it seems to be that the Natural Disasters have bit off more than they can chew. Hawk says when they get in the ring with the Natural Disasters they will chew them up and spit them out like the tartar that used to be stuck to their teeth. Hawk says first and foremost on their rotten minds are the Nasty Boys and the WWF Tag Team titles. Hawk says that there are boys and there are men and then there are monsters. WHAT A RUSH!!!!

They head back to the police station where they are trying to finger print the Mountie. They ask him for his finger so the Mountie says you want the finger here is the finger and he flips them off.

Backstage Interview: Triangle of Terror

Mooney says that Slaughter can relate to being out numbered. Slaughter and asks him about being out numbered. Slaughter says Hogan and Warrior are going to be the ones that are out numbered. Slaughter then says that they are going to be out numbered at the start of the match because the Warrior still looks snake bitten and that Hogan lost 6 gallons of blood from the gash in his head. Slaughter says it looks like it is going to be a little easier than they thought. Slaughter then says that they might have one more surprise tonight for the Match Made in Hell.

Backstage Interview: Sid Justice

Gene wants to know how Sid is going to call this match. Sid says if he has been asked that question once he’s been asked it 100 times. Sid says the question is where does Sid stand. Sid says he has answered that question a 1000x and that he is a man that stands alone. Gene then shows footage of Slaughter and the Triangle of Terror trying to recruit Sid to join the core. Sid says that those guys stopped him in the hall and that he didn’t promise them anything. Sid says that he didn’t promise Hogan or Warrior anything either. Sid says the only thing he can promise is that justice will be served.

Match 6: WWF Tag Team Title Match: Nasty Boys (c) vs. Legion of Doom

This match starts off fast and furious with LOD attacking the Nasty Boys and throwing them to the outside. Hawk is working over Saggs while Animal works over Knobbs. Inside the ring Animal drops Knobbs with a big time power bomb while Hawk just lays in chops and rights to Saggs. Hawk then hits Saggs with a big ass shoulder block off the ropes. Saggs gets a spray can tossed to him and he sprays it in the face to get control of the match for the Nasty Boys. Hawk ends up on the outside and Saggs picks up a cooler of soda and blasts Hawk in the back with it.

The Nasty Boys exchange tags and double team as they work over Hawk in their corner. This is a no disqualification match and the ref keeps on trying to prevent stuff as if it isn’t one. Kind of pointless to add this stipulation if you aren’t going to let these guys do anything they want. Saggs whips Knobbs into the corner and he hits a big splash on Hawk. Saggs then goes up to the top rope and he drops his big elbow but Animal comes in and breaks up the pin.

Knobbs goes for a move off the middle rope but Hawk gets the boot up and this gives him enough time to tag in Animal. Animal comes in and is laying in the right hands and the clotheslines on both members of the Nasty Boys. Animal hits a big time power slam on Knobbs as Saggs breaks up the pin. All four men are in the ring as Saggs throws Hawk out of the ring. Nasty Boys are both working over Animal as Jimmy Hart throws in the helmet to Saggs. Saggs ends up nearly nailing Knobbs with the helmet but he stops himself so he nails Animal in the back.

Hawk goes over to Jimmy Hart and steals the helmet from him and he ends up nailing Knobbs with it on the outside. Hawk then nails Saggs with the helmet in the back. Animal then picks up Saggs and puts him on his shoulders as Hawk comes off with the clothesline to hit the Doomsday Device on Saggs. Animal gets the pin and the 1-2-3. Your winners and new WWF Tag Team Champions….Legion of Doom!

Recap:
This match could have been pretty good if the ref got the hell out of the way and let these guys go at it in a no disqualification match. He was stopping everything and they worked this match as if all the rules applied. Other than that this was a pretty decent match and the crowd was pretty damn hot for the LOD. Other than that aspect there really wasn’t much to this match.

They show the Mountie getting taken to his jail cell. Mountie says that he will walk and they don’t need to hold him but he tries to run off so they drag him to his cell. Mountie then yells for Jimmy as they come back to MSG.

Match 7: I.R.S. vs. Greg Valentine

IRS hops on the mic at the start and he says when it comes to paying taxes the fans have become nothing but a bunch of finger pointers and cry babies. IRS says it is time to cut the crying and start paying. They go back and forth with some arm wringers to start the match. Valentine ends up dropping IRS with a big time shoulder block off the ropes. Instead of a shoulder block we get a hip toss and then a clothesline that sends IRS to the outside. Gorilla says the rumor going around ringside is that Jake Roberts and the Undertaker have been spotted in the building but they don’t know where.

IRS gets back in the ring and he gets the upper hand with a knee and some right hands. Valentine hits IRS with a sunset flip and then a body slam that sends IRS to the outside again. The crowd is completely dead for this match. IRS catches Valentine getting back in the ring as he gets his abominable stretch that he does every damn match. Crowd is starting to get restless and some fans are starting boring chants. I don’t blame them there. IRS gets caught using the rope but when he breaks free of the hold he ends up dropping Valentine with a big time clothesline. That looked awesome.

We get a head lock and then a back breaker by IRS. IRS goes up the top rope but he takes to long as Valentine gets up and body slams him off the ropes. Valentine lays in the rights and chops. Irwin misses a high knee in the corner so Valentine goes right to the leg and starts working it over and getting it ready for the figure four leg lock. Valentine ends up getting IRS in the figure four in the middle of the ring but IRS crawls and ends up getting a hold of the bottom rope.

Valentine pulls IRS to the middle of the ring. Valentine calls for the figure four again but he doesn’t go for it. Valentine picks up IRS and drops the knee on to his knee and he calls for the move again. Valentine finally goes for the figure four and IRS ends up grabbing him and getting in the small package for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….I.R.S!

Recap:
This was just a downer match so the crowd can get a break before the main event. The crowd was bored and so was I because this match sucked. They did nothing to keep you interested and that makes this one a dud.

Backstage Interview; Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior

Hogan says the battleground of Madison Square Garden is the only place for Match Made in Hell. Hogan says he has been waiting for a feeling and a rush since he’s won the title back in 84. Hogan says he has that seem feeling and that same rush. Hogan says if they don’t wipe out Sgt. Slaughter and his core then they could change the course of history again. Warrior then asks Hogan if they are loaded down. Warrior says he is ready to go down in the pit. Warrior says that one snake bite is not enough to stop Hulkamania or Warrior Wildness.

Warrior says they won’t arrive by tank, by air, but we will walk side by side and leave four steps behind. Warrior says that he and Hogan walk into this battle to leave as they walk in the same. Hogan says the bite from the cobra can’t stop the Warrior. He says the toxins have added more fuel to the fire. Hogan says that tonight is just as important as hanging on to the WWF Title. Hogan and Warrior then talk in tandem and as the Core what they are going to do when they destroy them!

Match Made in Hell: Hulk Hogan/Ultimate Warrior vs. Sgt. Slaughter/Gen. Adnan/Col. Mustafa

Slaughter tries to use his whip at the start of the match but Sid grabs it and throws it out of the ring before he could use it. This one starts off with Hogan and Slaughter start this one as the main event is on. Slaughter gets the advantage early with right hands but Hogan ends up reversing an irish whip and damn near sends Slaughter flying over the top rope. Hogan and Warrior then trade rights on Slaughter. Hogan gets the tag to Warrior and he comes in and they hit a double clothesline on Slaughter.

Warrior picks up Slaughter and drops him with an atomic drop and then quickly tags Hogan back in as they hit Slaughter with a double big boot. Hogan does some garbage offense before he tags in the Warrior and he comes in hits Slaughter with a punch to the midsection as he quickly tags in Hogan, who comes off the middle rope with an ax handle. Hogan starts choking Slaughter and Sid admonishes him and tells him he will throw him out if he doesn’t break when he tells him to. Slaughter ends up poking Hogan in the eye as he finally gets control of the match for the heel team.

Adan comes in and they are working over the face of Hogan, who was busted open at the SummerSlam Spectacular. Sid gets distracted by Slaughter and Warrior while Adnan and Mustafa double team on Hogan. Mustafa gets in the ring and gets Hogan in the camel clutch until Warrior comes in and breaks it up. Slaughter tags in and he drops Hogan with a back breaker. Slaughter goes for an irish whip on Hogan but he ends up running right into Sid as they have a stare off. That was a pretty sweet spot. I love how Sid just no sold the bump unlike other refs who would play dead after getting hit.

Slaughter and the Core get frequent tags as they all work over the lower back of Hogan. Slaughter goes up to the top rope and is about to drop a knee to the lower back of Hogan but Warrior ends up pushing him off the top rope and sends him flying. Hogan crawls over and he gets the tag to Warrior and he comes in with numerous clotheslines to Slaughter. Again we get the spot where Warrior runs into Sid but he no sells it and they have a stare off as well. The core triple team Warrior in the corner. Warrior ends up blocking a suplex and hits Mustafa with another one so he can try and get the tag to Hogan but Slaughter comes in first and prevents Warrior from tagging.

Slaughter drops the Warrior with a terrible short arm clothesline. That looked like total shit. Slaughter was garbage. Warrior ends up hitting a flying suplex that knocks down both guys. Warrior ends up getting the tag to Hogan as he comes in and cleans house on Slaughter. All 5 guys are in the ring as Warrior comes in and cleans house of Mustafa and Adnan. Warrior grabs a chair and chases both guys out town. Hogan then takes some powder and throws it in the face of Slaughter. Hogan then drops the big leg and gets the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Hulk Hogan & The Ultimate Warrior!

After the match Hogan poses in the ring for a little bit by himself. Hogan then calls back to Sid and he comes in and poses with Hogan. It’s unfortunate Sid got injured because I would have liked to see what they were going to do with him.

Recap:
This match was kind of shit. Slaughter, Adnan, and Mustafa were garbage by this point and had no business being in the main event here. Hogan and Warrior didn’t really mesh well as a tag team and I think a lot of that had to do with the backstage shit that went on before this show went on the air. There was some animosity there and it affected how they performed here because it felt forced and they didn’t really feel into it. The dynamic with Sid as the ref was pretty good and I liked some of the spots that they did to utilize him. Other than that, this match was the shits and not really worth checking out.

They go back to the Mountie in the slammer and he is yelling that he wants out of the cell and that he deserves to be in his own cell. A guy then gets in the face of the Mountie and he tells him to get out of his face. The guy then asks if he wants to fight his buddy and then his buddy shows up. It’s some dude in a leather jacket who is talking like a gay guy and says “Hi, don’t you just love the way leather feels against your body.” Mountie goes irate and starts yelling get me out of here.

Match Made in Heaven: Randy Savage & Elizabeth Wedding:

Before the wedding they show the proposal of Macho Man to Elizabeth. They then show a highlight video of Macho Man and Elizabeth. It’s unfortunate that they have some shitty ass replacement song on this video instead of the original that was used on the PPV.

They go through the whole wedding bit and Savage says he does by saying oh yeah!!! Elizabeth goes through the same thing and answers that she will. They place the rings on the fingers and repeat after the pastor. Savage sounds hilarious saying this stuff. They are pronounced as husband and wife so Savage ends up taking off the lid and he kisses the bride. Balloons and confetti fill Madison Square Garden as both Macho and Elizabeth walk around to show the fans as this show goes off the air.

The Wedding Reception:

This part isn’t on the WWE Network version but it was on the coliseum video version. There was a pretty big angle that occurred here so we would be remised if we didn’t go over it here. Lord Alfred is doing the voice over and going over what is going on. We got a terrible band playing some garbage music as guests go up and talk to Savage and Elizabeth. Savage shakes the hand of Heenan and tells somebody to show him the exit. They go through the toast that was delivered by Gene Okerlund.

They drink by locking arms and Savage says it tastes better that way and that he likes it. Savage was nuts and just awesome. They then do the ceremonial first dance of the evening. Next up we get the cutting of the cake. They do the bouquet toss.

Next up we get to the gift opening. Savage says he’s not waiting for nothing. He opens up the first gift and says he got a blender yeah. Savage says they are going to make out like bandits right now. Savage then gets some candle sticks. Savage says next time send money. Elizabeth then opens up a gift and a snake is inside of it. Undertaker comes out of no where and nails Savage with the urn. Jake, who has a completely different snake then what was shown, gets in the face of Elizabeth and taunts her with the snake. Finally, Sid Justice shows up out of no where with a chair and sends Jake and Undertaker fleeing as they fade to black.

Show Recap:
Top to bottom this show isn’t the greatest card by any means but there are a lot of things that are fun and entertaining about this card. They had a really good opener with a ton of star power that got the crowd hot and ready to go. They follow that up with one of the all time great matches in SummerSlam history between Perfect and Bret Hart. They psychology and everything they did in the ring was just top notch and makes the price of the pay per view worth it in my opinion. The amazing part about that match is the fact that Perfect’s back was shot and didn’t wrestle until November of the following year after this match and he put on a match like that? Impressive as hell.

The Disasters vs. Bushwhackers wasn’t as bad as it looks on paper because the Disasters did a great job of selling for the Bushwhackers and making it look like the Whackers actually had a chance. We follow that up with a pretty hot match between Virgil and DiBiase that the crowd really enjoyed. The match itself wasn’t that great but the story being told and the angle leading up to the match really makes the match good.

The jail house match was eh because the Mountie worked like a snail and really slowed the match down. However, all the vignettes of the Mountie in jail were worth it and there is no better person for that role than the Mountie. I really liked the middle section of the show where they go through all the interviews and stuff. It gives you a break from the action and it allows you to hear from a lot of the guys on the card. I also like how they interview guys after they already won so you can get their thoughts on winning the match and whatnot. Just a really good way to space a show and they did this throughout 91 and 92 and I really liked it.

After the mini break we come back to the LOD vs. Nasty Boys tag team title match. This match was ruined by the ref trying to prevent all the double teaming and cheating but since it was a no disqualification match then it shouldn’t have mattered. That took away from the match for me but the crowd popped loud for LOD so the title change was pretty sweet. After that we got two shit matches to end the show in IRS vs. Valentine. The match was slow and plodding and just there to kill he crowd so they can get hyped for the main event. The main event itself wasn’t very good because the team of Hogan and Warrior felt forced and they really had no desire to work together. It comes across the screen and it takes away from the match. Add that to the fact that the Core was total garbage and you get a dud of a main event.

The wedding and reception was a waste of time but I get why they were doing. People love love stories so the WWF capitalized on one of their own with Savage and Elizabeth. The reception itself was pretty sweet because they got the snake in the box angle and it started the feud between Jake and Savage as well as Sid before he got injured. Its a nice way to send the crowd home happy I guess but this just isn’t my thing.

On the whole there are things that you can enjoy on this card and there are things you will want to skip. Overall I would give it a solid 6.5/10 just because of the Bret vs. Perfect match. Well that does it for this episode of the Event Center. We switched things up a little bit as far as how the review is going to go and I felt like it was a lot better than what I have been doing. I hope this is a little bit easier of a read for you but this will be the normal going forward. Stay tuned for the next edition as we continue with a Summer Review Series. Next time we are heading back to WCW in 1993 and we are doing the follow up to Beach Blast 1993. We are doing the Clash of the Champions from August of 1993 with a main event of Vader vs. the British Bulldog. Stay tuned for that but in the meantime I hope you enjoy this one and continue to support us here at CrazyMax. Thanks for reading!

The Event Center: WCW Beach Blast 1993
Introduction:
Hello, and welcome back to CrazyMax’s Event Center. We are continuing our trend of the red hot summer reviews. This time we are going back to the second annual WCW Beach Blast. We get the Masters of the Power Bombs vs. The Super Powers. Thats right we get the classic between Sting and the British bulldog vs. Vader and Sid Vicious. There is going to be a little added bonus when it comes to this specific review so I hope you enjoy that. I haven’t seen this show in quite some time so it is going to be fresh for me as it is for you. I can’t wait to get it started so let’s do it to it.

Show Opening:

They show some cheesy ass graphics for Beach Blast while the voice over guys tells us that the beaches of Biloxi, MS are hot. He then says us that the action will be explosive. He then runs through the card. We got Paul Orndorff vs. Ron Simmons for the TV Title. He asks who the iron man of WCW is going to be between Rick Rude and Dustin Rhodes. We have a World Tag Team title match between Hollywood Blondes vs. Arn Anderson/Paul Roma. We then have the Super Powers vs. the Master of the Power Bombs. Flair will also be in action for the NWA title.

Eric Bischoff then takes over and says that we have 4 title matches and the main event between the Super Powers and the Masters of the Power Bombs. Bischoff and Missy Hyatt are standing on a make shift beach as they run through the card. Bischoff says it is going to be a tremendous night of hard hitting action. Missy says she is excited so Bischoff sends us down ringside to Tony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura.

Tony says the summer is red hot and so is the action. Jesse isn’t ringside but they head back up to the entrance ramp to locate Jesse. He is behind a bar at the start of the entrance ramp. Jesse then says he is going to come down to the ring with his four ladies as the lights start to go out for no reason. Jesse then grabs his ladies and heads toward the ring. Jesse finally shows up ringside. Jesse says he barely made it but he says the girls are going to hang around until after Beach Blast and then they will finish where they left off but Tony can’t ask them where they left off. Tony then sends us up to the ring to kick off Beach Blast.

Match 1: WCW Television Title Match: Paul Orndoff (c) vs. Ron Simmons

They let us know that if Paul Orndorff gets disqualified then he will lose the TV Title anyways. Before the match even starts the fans start chanting Paula, Paula and this infuriates Orndorff. He won’t even take his robe off because he is so hot. Orndorff is on the apron and when he turns around Simmons nails him with a right hand and knocks him off the apron. Simmons goes out after him and he pulls the robe off Orndorff and gets him back in the ring. Simmons drops him with a couple of right hands and then he whips him into the ropes and hits him with a back elbow. Simmons whips Orndorff into the ropes and ends up hitting him with a drop kick for a 2 count.

Orndorff rolls to the outside to get a breather. He gets back in the ring and they are being a little timid as they are feeling each other out. Orndorff hits Simmons with a nice looking drop toe hold and goes for an elbow but Simmons moves out of the way. Simmons then grabs the arm of Orndorff and starts to work with over with rights and kicks plus an arm bar. Simmons gets Orndorff in a hammer lock but Orndorff gets out of it with a big time elbow to the face of Simmons.

Orndorff lays in the right hands and he whips Simmons into the corner but Simmons gets out of the way as Orndorff crashes into the corner with his elbow. Simmons goes back to the arm bar until he whips Orndorff into the ropes. Simmons goes for a clothesline but Orndorff ducks under and jumps on the back of Simmons with a sleeper hold. Orndorff then pushes Simmons into the corner and ends up dropping Simmons with a belly to back suplex. Orndorff ends up going to the top rope and goes for a diving knee drop but Simmons gets out of the way and Orndorff goes crashing to the mat.

Simmons gets up and starts kicking the bad leg of Orndorff. Simmons drags Orndorff to the middle of the ring and takes his foot and drives the knee into the mat. Simmons then takes the leg of Orndorff and drapes it across the bottom rope and he jumps down on it. Simmons then puts Orndorff in a figure four leg lock but Orndorff is in the ropes so the hold is broken. Orndorff goes to the outside and Simmons goes out but Orndorff grabs him and pulls him out to the floor with him. Orndorff rams Simmons head first into the TV on the announce table and he follows that up with 3-4 chops to the chest. Orndorff throws Simmons into the ring and gets Simmons in a reverse chin lock to work the neck of Simmons.

Simmons gets back to his feet and drives the elbows into the midsection. Simmons hits the ropes and drops Orndorff with a shoulder block. He goes for another one but Orndorff hits Simmons with a knee to the gut and then a high knee to the face. Orndorff then gets Simmons in a head lock in the middle of the ring. Simmons again gets to his feet and fights out of the head lock. Simmons nails Orndorff with some rights and lefts before he whips Orndorff into the corner. Simmons charges in and gets hit with a big boot. Orndorff then grabs Simmons by the head and drives him head first into the mat. Orndorff then gets Simmons in the reverse chin lock again.

Orndorff and Simmons exchange rights, lefts and kicks before Orndorff rakes the eyes of Simmons. Simmons reverses an irish whip and ends up dropping Orndorff with a power slam for a 2 1/2 count. Orndorff gets up to his feet and lays in a few right hands to Simmons. Simmons ends up hitting Orndorff with a sunset flip out of an irish whip and gets a 2 count. We get another irish whip and Orndorff misses a drop kick on Simmons. Orndorff gets up and Simmons whips Orndorff into the ropes and he charges in and hits him with a clothesline.

Simmons drops Orndorff with a back elbow for a 2 count. Simmons picks up Orndorff and he hits him with a nice looking suplex for another 2 count. Orndorff gets up to his feet and he ends up thumbing Simmons in the eye. Orndorff then goes for a pile driver on Simmons but Simmons ends up blocking it and back dropping Orndorff to the outside. Your winner by disqualification….Paul Orndorff!

After the match Simmons throws Orndorff back into the ring and then he goes up to the top rope and hits Orndorff with a flying shoulder block. Orndorff then takes his TV title belt and swings it at Simmons but Simmons moves out of the way and ends up decking Orndorff with a right hand. Orndorff gets the hell out of dodge as Simmons talks to the ref about what happened and why he got disqualified.

Recap:
This was a pretty good match here but it’s ruined by a stupid finish. I hated the over the top rope rule and the fact that it lasted until 97-98 is beyond me. Neither guy really maintained the advantage throughout the match so that made it entertaining from bell to bell. The DQ finish ruins things a little bit but it is still a nice little opener to a pay per view.

They go ringside to Tony and Jesse where they are talking about what title matches they have to come. Jesse is messing with his goggles and then he makes fun of Tony for what is on his nose. Jesse believes that Sting and Davey Boy should have taken the tickets to Tahiti and not even shown up for this match tonight. They then discuss the match between Ric Flair and Barry Windham.

Match 2: Marcus Bagwell/2 Cold Scorpio vs. Tex Slazenger/Shanghi Pierce

The match starts off with Bagwell and Pierce in the ring. They tie up and Pierce immediately drives Bagwell into the corner but we get a clean break, shockingly. We tie up again and Bagwell gets a side head lock but Pierce pushes him off and Bagwell tries to drop him with a few shoulder blocks to no avail. Bagwell does a baseball slide between the legs of Pierce and ends up hitting him with a nice cross body. 2 Cold gets in the ring as Pierce rolls out of the ring. Bagwell and 2 Cold then drop Tex on the mat.

Bagwell gets on all fours and 2 Cold runs to jump off it but he slips and falls over the top rope on to his face. Luckily the camera panned away to where you couldn’t really see it but that was pretty bad. 2 Cold recovers by laying in some right hands on the apron and then he hits a twisting cross body off the middle rope. This pisses Tex and Shanghi off as they take a powder on the outside of the ring. Tex gets in the ring now with Bagwell but Tex wants some of 2 Cold so Bagwell makes the tag to Scorpio. Scorpio gets in the ring and starts dancing in front of Tex to show him up.

We get a tie up between Scorpio and Tex and Tex gets Scorpio in a head lock but Scorpio pushes off and ends up getting dropped with a shoulder block by Tex. Scorpio gets back up to his feet and hits the ropes but ends up getting hit with a big time back body drop. Looks like Scorpio got to much elevation because he went flying and damn near got his feet caught on the top rope where he could have fell down and snapped his neck. That was pretty damn close there but what a sweet looking back drop that was.

Tex picks up Scorpio and drives him into the corner. Tex picks up Scorpio and puts him on the top rope but Scorpio ends up blocking some kicks and he hits Tex with a cross body off the middle rope for a 2 count. Scorpio then gets up and hits Tex with a nice looking drop kick followed by a arm drag. Bagwell gets the tag and they hit a double lay down hip toss for a 2 count. Bagwell goes to the arm but Tex ends up nailing Bagwell and getting the tag to Pierce. Pierce comes charging in but gets hit with a drop toe hold. Bagwell does an up top down low 2-3 times before he hits a hip toss on Pierce. Bagwell gets right back in the arm bar to get a little bit of a rest here.

Pierce breaks free from the arm bar and hits Bagwell with a body slam. Tex gets the tag and he comes in and gets hit with an arm drag and in an arm bar. Bagwell gets up and hits Tex with a suplex and he floats over for a 2 count. Bagwell gets whipped into the ropes and Pierce ends up hitting Bagwell in the back with a knee. Tex picks up Bagwell and drags him to the corner and drops him with an arm bar. Tex then gets Bagwell in a hammer lock as he drives his head into the arm for more pressure. Pierce gets the tag and he drops a boot to the arm off the middle rope. We get quick tags as both guys work over the arm of Bagwell.

Tex whips Bagwell into the ropes but Bagwell hits Tex with a sunset flip for a 2 count. Both guys get back to their feet and Tex nails Bagwell with a nice clothesline for a 2 count before Scorpio breaks up the pin. Pierce comes in and hits Bagwell with an ax handle off the middle rope. Pierce puts Bagwell in the corner as he distracts the ref so Tex can work the arm in the corner. Pierce gets a snap mare into a head lock. Bagwell gets up to his feet and gets free but he gets caught and Pierce ends up dropping him with a nice gut wrench power bomb for a 2 count. Tex gets the tag and he comes in and starts to work the arm once again of Bagwell.

Pierce gets tagged in and he drops a big elbow to the neck of Bagwell. Pierce picks up Bagwell and drops him with a body slam. Pierce goes for a big elbow but Bagwell gets out of the way. Tex gets the tag and he stops Bagwell from being able to make the tag. Tex drops Bagwell with a shoulder breaker as Pierce hits a big elbow and gets a 2 count. Pierce whips Bagwell into the ropes and comes charging in with an elbow but Bagwell gets out of the way and ends up making the tag to Scorpio. He comes in and drops Pierce with some right hands and then he nails Tex with a beautiful side kick. Scorpio then hits Pierce with a big time kick and he follows that up with an sweet looking splash off the top rope. That looked awesome.

All four guys are now in the ring and they are separated in different corners. Bagwell and Scorpio end up irish whipping Tex and Pierce into each other in the middle of the ring. Scorpio hits Tex with a drop kick. Pierce goes for a right hand but Bagwell catches him with a belly to back suplex. Scorpio then comes off the top rope with a 450 splash for the 1-2-3. Your winners by pinfall….2 Cold Scorpio & Marcus Bagwell!

Recap:
This match wasn’t bad here. I was expecting garbage from Tex and Pierce but they showed up for this one. Scorpio and Bagwell had some pretty good offense sprinkled in throughout the match. Bagwell was the right guy to take all the damage because he did a pretty good job of selling it. Scorpio was so far ahead of his time as far as wrestling in the US is concerned. He was doing things nobody would even think of doing and it was just awesome. He damn near got injured with the back drop but his big splash looked cool as shit. Also, a guy in 1993 doing a 450 splash for the win? Thats whats up. All in all a pretty solid match here as well and we are off to a pretty damn good start for this show.

Ringside Interview: Paul Orndorff and Equalizer

Missy says it looks like Simmons nearly took the TV title. Missy says that there are a lot of men in the WCW that would love to take that title from Mr. Wonderful. Orndorff tells us that now we know why he is called the John Wayne of professional wrestling. Orndorff says he plays straight down the middle by the rules. Orndorff says that Simmons should be fined and penalized and kicked out of the WCW for deliberately throwing Orndorff over the top rope. Orndorff says Simmons knew he had him beat with the pile driver. Orndorff said Simmons choked like Florida State always does. Orndorff says his good friend is the Equalizer and he is going to get equal with a lot of people.

Missy says that Steamboat would love to take the title from Orndorff. Orndorff calls Steamboat the old man with the gray hair. Orndorff calls him the old man at the sea because he is balding and has to put black stuff in his hair. Orndorff says Steamboat is not worthy of his TV Title. Missy then sends us back to the ring announcer to get us started on the next match.

Match 3: Lord Steven Regal vs. Erik Watts

Watts is coming out and they end up showing the name plate for Lord Steven Regal. Bill Watts getting fired before this show so Erik is no longer getting that undeserved push so he doesn’t even get his own name plate. We get this one started with a tie up but Regal keeps breaking free of it because he doesn’t want to touch the commoner. They tie up for real finally and its more of a test of strength than anything else. Regal ends up getting the upper hand with an arm bar on Watts. Watts reverses it and gets Regal in an arm bar of his own.

The arm bar is the favorite of anyone so far tonight, Randy Orton would be proud. Regal does a roll through and then a monkey flip but Watts ends up holding on to the wrist lock and he keeps the advantage. Regal snaps Watts over and then drops a knee to the arm to break free of the wrist lock. Regal goes right back to working the arm with a wrist lock. Watts does a step over and ends up on the arm of Regal and Regal flips him but Watts kicks off and he ends up getting the upper hand and another arm bar on Regal.

Watts ends up dropping a knee to the arm of Regal but Regal ends up kicking Watts in the back of the head while he is just sitting there. Regal was so good at doing little things that had to piss people off during the match. Little things like kicking him in the back or grinding his forearm into your face during a pin. Just great stuff. Regal ends up getting a double wrist lock but Watts powers out. Watts does a roll through and gets out of the hold until Regal gets the wrist lock again.

They are doing a test of strength and Regal ends up getting a pinning combination out of nothing which was pretty damn cool. They exchanged 2-3 near falls on the mat. Regal looks a little baffled at how well Watts is keeping up with him. Watts goes right back to the wrist lock and then a hammer lock but Regal drives Watts into the corner and hits him with a back elbow. Regal hits Watts with a drop toe hold only for Watts to break free and ends up getting the arm bar on Regal again. Watts continues to work the arm of Regal until Regal ends up hitting Watts with a back drop. However, Watts grabs the legs and gets a near fall on Regal with a sunset flip.

Regal starts working over the ankle and the leg of Watts. Regal snaps the leg and then hits a few European uppercuts in the corner. Regal snap mares Watts over and then pulls down his knee pad and tries to drop a knee but Watts gets out of the way. Watts then whips Regal into the ropes and ends up kicking him in the bad knee. Watts then goes for the STF but William hits him in the face with an open hand slap. Regal ends up hitting Watts in the back and then rolls him up and pulls the trunks to get the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Lord Steven Regal!

Recap:
This match won’t be for everyone but there was a lot of good back and forth action throughout. Watts surprised me here a little bit with how well he kept up with Regal. I figured Regal would just school him on the mat and dominate the match but that wasn’t the case and it turned out to be a pretty good match all around. Nice stuff so far out of this card. Let’s see how long they can keep it up.

They show a vignette for Fall Brawl: War Games. Live September 19th on pay per view!

Ringside Interview: Lord Steven Regal & Sir William

Jesse says it is his pleasure to be able to interview a blue blood. Regal says that Jesse is an honorable person. Regal says that Watts was supposed to be the all American athlete. Regal says he didn’t even break a sweat in beating him. Regal says that he saw Orndorff retained his TV Title. Regal says he wants to take back his TV Title. Regal says Orndorff better watch out because like the great Winston Churchill said “We will fight them on the beaches, we will fight them in the trenches, but no where is safe when the Queen has sent their lordship on a mission.” Regal then tells William that he hopes he has those crumpets toasted well because it is time to go.

They show the video of Maxx Payne shooting the Badd Blaster into the face of Johnny B. Badd from Clash of the Champions.

Match 4: Johnny B. Badd vs. Maxx Payne

This one starts with Johnny taking Maxx down and laying in the right hands. Johnny has a mask on to sell the damage from the Badd Blaster from Clash of the Champions. Johnny ends up hitting Payne with a cross body for a 2 count. Both guys get up and they exchange left and right hands. Johnny whips Maxx into the corner but he goes for a splash and Maxx moves out of the way as Johnny goes flying over the top rope. That couldn’t have felt good because it looks like he nailed his back on the post and he didn’t really have control of where he was going. That looked bad.

Badd gets back into the ring and Maxx ends up hitting him with a suplex. Maxx then grabs the arm of Badd and hits him with a body slam to work over the arm. Maxx then whips Badd into the corner and he comes charging in with a back elbow. Maxx snaps Badd over and starts to work the arm some more. Badd gets back to his feet and lays in the right hands to Maxx to break free. Maxx then picks up Badd and drops him with a back breaker for a 2 count.

Badd ends up on his feet and Maxx goes for the Pain Killer but Badd is in the ropes so Maxx has to break the hold. Maxx continues to work the arm of Badd. Maxx ends up hitting Badd with a float over suplex for another 2 count. Maxx whips Badd into the ropes but Badd goes for a sunset flip and gets him over for a 2 count. Maxx goes for a clothesline and misses but Badd goes for a cross body but Maxx catches him and hits him with a body slam. Maxx goes for an elbow but Badd gets out of the way.

Both guys get up and Badd hits Payne with a drop kick and Maxx goes to the outside. Badd goes up and over the top rope to the outside but completely misses Maxx with the cross body. Badd tried to drive Maxx into the steel post but Maxx pushes him off and sends Badd into the post. Maxx goes for a clothesline into the post but Badd moves out of the way. Badd rolls Maxx into the ring and then he goes off the middle rope with a cross body for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Johnny B. Badd!

Recap:
This match was kind of crappy if you ask me. It was real sloppy and not really good. There was too much wrestling for a grudge match if you ask me. If it is a grudge match and a guy damn near ended your career, storyline wise, why in the hell are you going to work an arm or a leg? Why not just go all out and brawl and get your revenge on the guy. That never really makes sense to me. Also, with the stupid no off the top rope rules in place Badd had to go off the middle rope with a cross body to get an ugly ass finish. Just too many things hindered this match for me to enjoy it. Our first eh match of the night.

They go ringside where Tony and Jesse talk about the next title match between the Hollywood Blondes vs. Arn Anderson/Paul Roma. Jesse keeps messing with the shit on Tony’s nose and he ends up wiping it on the neck of Tony. Tony says if he would want one tag partner it would be Arn Anderson. Jesse says he will stick with the Blondes because they are still the champions and they will be the best until they lose.

Match 5: WCW World Tag Team Title Match: Hollywood Blondes (c) vs. Arn Anderson/Paul Roma

Looks like this one is going to start off with Austin and Paul Roma. Pillman goes after a fan on the outside but Austin goes out and stops him from hurting the guy. The fan is getting right in the face of Pillman, thats probably not a good idea but he did it anyways. They are a little timid as they start off here until we finally get a tie up and Austin drives Roma into the corner. Austin drives his hands into the face of Roma as he backs off. We tie up again and this time Roma drives Austin into the corner until Austin reverses it and drives his hands in the face of Roma again.

They exchange hammer locks until they break free and Roma just drops Austin with a big time right hand. Austin rolls to the outside and Pillman goes out to check on him and his face. Pillman then gives Austin a kiss on the cheek to bring in that heel heat. Such a classic heel move. Austin gets back in the ring and tags in Pillman. They tie up and Roma drives Pillman into the corner and we get a clean break. We tie up again and this time we get an arm bar by Roma who ends up tagging in Anderson and he drops an elbow to Pillman. Pillman ends up getting dropped with a big time back elbow that floors him. Arn then mocks the Blondes by doing the film reel gesture.

Pillman goes up and over on an irish wisp and then he drops Arn with a hip toss. Arn grabs the hair of Pillman and just throws him to the mat out of an arm ringer. We get another tie up and an arm bar by Arn but Pillman breaks free and tags in Austin and he gets hit with an arm drag right away. Austin ends up hitting Arm with a back drop and then drops the elbow on Arn. Austin tries to get a pin but only gets 1 counts until Arn gets back up and just nails Austin with 3-4 right hands that send Austin out on to the entrance ramp. Austin crawls back into the ring and extends his hand for a hand shake that Arn ends up shaking and then nails Austin with a kick. Arn works the arm and he tags in Roma who comes off the top rope with a club to the arm of Austin.

The move of the night so far is the arm ringer because Roma does it again on Austin to keep control. Austin gets up and he catches Roma in a bear hug but Roma falls through and gets a sunset flip on Austin for a 2 1/2 count. Austin picks up Roma again and this time they get in a back slide and Roma damn near gets the 3 but Austin gets out at 2 1/2 again. Austin misses a clothesline on the irish whip but Roma ends up missing a cross body as Austin quickly makes the tag to Pillman. He comes in and lays in a vicious chop to Roma. Roma reverses an irish whip and ends up getting Pillman in a choke hold and he carries him over to the middle rope and is about to hit him with a right hand but Pillman jumps over him but Roma drops him with a clothesline anyways.

Arn gets back in the ring and he goes back to the arm of Pillman. Pillman drives Arn into the corner and ends up hitting him with a knee lift and some chops. Pillman tries to go up and over again but Arn catches him and he ends up dropping Pillman across the top rope. Arn then catapults Pillman into Roma and he nails him with a right hand. Arn tries to whip Pillman into the ropes but he just falls down and Jesse says it’s because the knee buckled. Arn tries it again and again Pillman just falls down again. Pillman then pushes the ref out of the way and he dives at the knee of Arn and ends up throwing him out of the ring. Pillman goes for a cross body off the apron but Arn gets out of the way and Pillman goes crashing into the guard rail.

Pillman ends up back in the ring and Arn goes for a suplex but Pillman blocks it but Arn tags in Roma and he goes over the top and hits a sunset flip off the top rope for a 2 count. Roma gets up and floors Austin off the apron but Pillman gets up and hits Roma with a big knee to get control of the match. Pillman distracts the ref and allows Austin to pick up Roma and drop him across the guard rail. Pillman then chokes Roma on the bottom rope until the ref makes him break it.

Austin gets tagged in and he comes in and kicks Roma right in the gut and then gets him in a gut wrench suplex. Austin then drops Roma with a short arm clothesline. Austin then starts to do some push ups and telling Roma to come on. Who does he think he is, Scott Steiner? Anyways, Austin drops some knees across the chest of Roma as he goes for the tag to Pillman. Pillman comes in and lays in the brutal sounding chops to Roma. Roma starts starts to fire back but Pillman drops him with a drop toe hold as he tags back in Austin.

Austin whips Roma into the corner but Roma gets the boot up and drops Austin. Austin gets up and nails Arn off the rope so Roma can’t get the tag. The Blondes then double team Roma in the corner while the ref tells Arn to get out of the ring. Roma ends up breaking free and he goes off the top rope with a drop kick but Pillman goes for a drop kick at the same time but both guys miss each other. That looked stupid as hell.

Austin gets the tag and so does Arn. Arn comes in and nails Austin with a big back drop and then he drops them both with some right hands. Arn ends up dropping Pillman with a DDT and he goes for the cover but Austin nails Arn in the back of the head with an ax handle. Austin gets tagged back in and he drops Arn with a body slam. Austin goes up to the top rope and drops the big elbow for a 2 count. Austin starts laying in the boots to Arn until Arn gets to his feet and he starts laying in the boots and the head butts to Austin. Austin drives the face of Arn into the foot of Pillman who gets the tag.

Arn is trying to fight back but Pillman stops the momentum with an eye rake. Pillman tags Austin back in and he comes in and starts laying the boots to Arn until he throws him outside. Pillman then rams the head of Arn into the guard rail as the ref is distracted by Austin. Austin goes out after Arn and goes for a pile driver but Arn ends up reversing it and he back drops Austin on the floor. Arn gets back in the ring and tries to get the tag but Austin stops him and ends up going for a pin for a 2 count. Arn goes for a DDT on Austin but Austin blocks it and hangs Arn on the top rope. Austin distracts the ref as Pillman lays in some forearms to Arn.

Arn blocks a bear hug type move and drops Austin across the top rope. Austin tags in Pillman and Roma gets in the ring but Arn gets an inside cradle but the ref doesn’t get there in time. Pillman ends up running the ropes as Arn drops down but Arn gets up and Pillman just runs right into him as both guys are laid out in the ring. Pillman makes the tag but again Arn is unable to make the tag so Austin comes in and drops Arn with a belly to back suplex. Arn ends up on the apron and he ends up fighting off both Austin and Pillman. Austin then goes for a suplex onto the inside but Arn reverses it and suplexes Austin to the outside. That looked brutal. Austin ends up landing on his stomach.

Arn gets back in the ring and tries to get the tag but Austin tags in Pillman and he stops the tag of Arn to Roma. Pillman ends up dropping Arn with a head scissors take over. Pillman climbs to the middle rope and goes for an ax handle but Arn drops him with a right hand. Arn finally makes the tag to Roma while Pillman tags in Austin. Roma comes in on fire and hits Austin with a big back drop and then a gorilla press slam on Pillman. All four guys are now in the ring as Arn drops Austin with a right hand. Roma then whips Austin into the ropes and Arn drops him with the spine buster. Roma goes for the cover and gets a 2 when Pillman breaks up the pin. Roma gets a roll up on Austin but Pillman nails him with a clothesline and then Austin ends up rolling up Roma and he grabs the tights as he gets the 1-2-3. Your winners by way of pinfall and still WCW Tag Team Champions….Hollywood Blondes!

Recap:
This was a damn good match here from start to finish. It starts a little slow but once it got going it was all really done well. The Blondes were awesome and its a shame politics shut them down way too soon. The finish was a good way to end the match and was really well done. Roma did his part and did pretty well being in the ring with these 3 guys. Arn was the professional that he always is and he actually did a pretty good job of taking all of the punishment. He made it believable throughout the match and it was just really done. This is probably going to be the best match on the card and for good reason. Definitely worth checking out this match.

They go back to the entrance way where Eric Bischoff and Missy Hyatt. Missy says she hates Hollywood but she really loves the Hollywood Blondes. Bischoff then discusses the Iron Man match between Rude and Dustin Rhodes. Missy says all she knows is 2 men, 30 minutes, and its her dream.

Match 6: Iron Man Challenge for WCW United States Title: Rick Rude vs. Dustin Rhodes

Rude gets on the mic at the start of the match and he says shut your mouths and open your eyes and show some respect to the next United States champion. The music comes back on as Rude disrobes. They start off the match with them jawing at each other. We get a tie up and both guys just roll around the ropes. We get a tie up again and they roll around the ropes again. Rude yells at Dustin and tells him to stop the son of a bitch. Rude gets control and ends up driving forearms into the back of Rhodes. Rude then gyrates the hips right in front of Rhodes.

Rude lays in a right hand then rakes the eyes of Rhodes with his boot laces. Rhodes nails Rude with a big time back drop. Rhodes whips Rude into the corner and works the back of Rude. Rhodes then gets Rude in a reverse chin lock to continue to apply the pressure to Rude’s back. Rhodes then jumps up and sits down on the back of Rude and then he gyrates mocking Rude. Rhodes then goes back to the chin lock and he jumps down on to the lower back of Rude again. Rhodes then mocks Rude again.

Rhodes goes back to the chin lock and Rude yells out “shit” as Rhodes starts pulling on the chin of Rude. Rhodes jumps up and goes for the move again but Rude quickly turns around and he gets his knees up and racks Rude. Rude then nails Rhodes with a big time clothesline that turns Rhodes inside out. Rude then goes to the top rope and nails Rhodes with a forearm to the head. Rude then starts working over the back of Rhodes. Rude gets Rhodes in a bear hug in the center of the ring. Rhodes nearly breaks free but Rude ends up dropping him with a belly to belly suplex. Rude then sits down on the lower back and gets Rhodes in a reverse chin lock.

Rude then jumps up and drops his weight into the back of Rhodes. Rude then gets on the back of Rhodes and the reverse chin lock again. Rhodes gets up to his feet with Rude on his shoulders and Rhodes drops him with an electric chair drop. Rhodes goes for a splash but Rude gets the knees up as Rhodes comes crashing down. We are at 20 minutes left in the Iron Man Challenge. Both guys get to their feet and Rhodes starts working over the leg of Rude. Rhodes then takes the leg and gets him in a leg lock with some knees to the leg mixed in. Rhodes then drags the leg of Rude to the apron and racks it over the apron.

Rhodes gets back into the ring and he drops Rude with a right hand and then he gets him in another leg lock in the middle of the ring. He stays in this hold for 2-3 minutes until Rude breaks free with an eye rake. Rude goes for a right hand but Rhodes blocks him and he ends up nailing Rude with 2-3 right hands. Rude nails Rhodes with a kick to the chest of Rhodes and then Rude drops him with a back breaker to the knee. Rude then drops Rhodes with the Rude Awakening for the 1-2-3. Rick Rude leads the challenge 1-0.

Rude goes up to the top rope and he ends up nailing Rhodes with a clothesline off the top. Rude goes for another pin but he gets a 2 1/2 count. Rude then grabs the head of Rhodes and slams him face first into the mat. We have 15 minutes left in the match. Rude then grabs the head of Rhodes and drops him over the top rope and he falls back on the entrance ramp. That looked pretty sweet there. More chin locks and rest holds as the clock ticks down. Rude goes for a tombstone but Rhodes gets out of it and dumps Rude with a tombstone of his own. Rhodes goes for the cover and gets a 2 count. Rhodes goes for a cross body and he just goes flying over the top rope as Rude gets out of the way.

The clock is ticking down to about 10 minutes remaining in this Iron Man challenge. Rude snaps off a few suplexes and goes for the cover but can only get a 2 count. Rude is going for a third suplex but Rhodes reverses it and drops Rude with a suplex of his own. Rude climbs up to the top rope and hits an a forearm again. Rude then yells “you aint shit Rhodes.” Jesse is getting on to Rude saying he is only up 1-0 so he should be doing more to get ahead further instead of putting it on ice. Rude gets a chin lock on with only 8 minutes left. Rhodes breaks free until Rude gets him in a sleeper holder in the middle of the ring.

There are only 5 minutes left in the match. Rude then blows his snot into the face of Rhodes. That was disgusting. Rude rakes the eyes of Rhodes and he ends up falling to the outside by going over the top rope. Rude is hitting Rhodes with right hands but ducking on Rhodes right hands. Rude ducks on the third punch but Rhodes doesn’t go for the punch and he ends up dropping Rude with his running bulldog. Rhodes goes for the cover and gets the 1-2-3 with 3:08 left. This match is tied at 1-1 with 3 minutes left. That was a great sequence of action right there. Love the psychology of this one.

Rhodes drops the elbow off the top rope and tries to get another pin but Rude kicks out. 2 minutes remaining in the match. Rhodes drops Rude with a pile driver but Rude gets the leg on the rope to break up the pin. We are down to the final 60 seconds of the match and Rhodes is dropping Rude with numerous clotheslines. Rude kicks out after 2 again. Rhodes gets Rude in a sleeper hold with about 35 seconds remaining in the match. Rude breaks free with the chin breaker. Rude gets up and goes to the top rope and he just jumps over Rhodes. Rhodes drops Rude with a DDT and goes for the cover with 2 seconds remaining then the bell rings. This match is a draw!

Recap:
This match was fun and entertaining throughout. Both guys delivered and put on a pretty good match. There were some rest holds but in between those was a lot of action. Rude got the early victory but he made the one mistake that allowed Rhodes to get it tied back up. I really liked the rush finish towards the end and Rhodes trying to get that last second victory. Just a really good match from bell to bell and it is definitely worth checking out.

They go to Jesse and Tony ringside where they discuss the feud between Ric Flair and Barry Windham.

They also show highlights of what has gone on between Flair and Windham that led to their match.

Match 7: NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Barry Windham (c) vs. Ric Flair

This match should be pretty damn good because both guys know each other so well. This was going to be the main event of Great American Bash 1991 but we got Luger instead and now here we are. We start this one off with both guys just circling until we get a tie up. The match starts off with both guys exchanging right hands and chops until Flair ends up getting drilled with a clothesline out of the corner by Windham.

They trade rights and chops some more until Windham drops to the outside and takes a breather. Windham whips Flair into the corner and Flair goes flying out of the ring to the outside. Jesse comments that Flair usually ends up on the apron but not this time. Windham heads out after Flair and drops him his big clothesline. Windham hits a nice vertical suplex on Flair and brings him back into the ring. Windham is being slow and methodical and working at his own pace. Flair gets the upper hand with a poke to the eye and he follows that up with a clothesline in the corner and some more chops.

They exchange some moves before Flair gets Windham in a sleeper hold in the middle of the ring. Windham drops down and sends Flair head first into the corner and Flair does his patented Flair flop. I always did love that. Windham drops Flair with a big time samoan drop right on the back of Flair. Windham is going with the power moves now as he drops Flair with a nice looking power slam for a 2 count. Windham hits Flair with another flying clothesline for another 2 count. Windham is starting to get frustrated with the referee here because he feels like this one should be over.

They exchange chops and rights until Flair drops Windham with 3 chops to the chest. No thanks on ever taking one of those from Flair. This match is just plodding along here and really nothing going on. Flair goes for a flying cross body but the ref got in the way so Flair couldn’t really connect and so Windham just jumps to the outside. What a shitty looking spot that was. Flair gets drug out with him and Windham drops him with a body slam on the outside. Windham goes to the middle rope for some right hands but Flair ends up dropping him with an atomic drop to gain control of the match.

Flair goes for a suplex on Windham but Windham ends up blocking it and he puts Flair on the top rope. Windham heads up to the top with him and he goes for the superplex off the top rope and nails him with it. Flair is screaming in pain while he holds his back. Windham goes to the top rope and goes for a big elbow but Flair rolls out of the way and both guys are laid out in the middle of the ring. Flair gets whipped into the corner and ends up flipping over and hits Windham with a cross body off the top rope but Windham rolls through and damn near gets a 3 count.

Flair ends up dropping Windham with a belly to back suplex but it injures the lower back of Flair as well. Flair finally targets the leg and starts working the knee. He goes for the figure four but Windham rolls out of it and gets to the ropes. He then kicks Windham in the knee and drops him and he ends up putting him in the figure four and the ref counts the 1-2-3. The ref rang for the bell but the bell didn’t ring so this finish just came across flat as hell. Just felt anti-climatic of a finish that I have seen for a title match. Your winner and new NWA World Heavyweight Champion….Ric Flair!

Recap:
Well this match wasn’t that great if you ask me. Flair’s offense was nothing but chops and right hands. He did his normal shit but nothing special at all from him. Windham had some nice offense and did some nice power moves but there was really nothing special here. This match didn’t mesh well and both guys just seemed off. The ending was the shits as well because Flair gets the figure four on for about 5 seconds when the ref ends up counting the three. Both guys continued to work because the bell didn’t sound right away and it just made the finish completely flat and anti-climatic. It’s symbolic of how this match was, nothing spectacular and it ended with a dud.

Ringside Interview: Ric Flair

Jesse said he had his doubts and he didn’t think it could be done 10 times. Jesse says he proved a lot of people wrong and that Flair gets better with age. Flair said that he beat a great champion in Barry Windham. Flair says now it is time to style and profile. Flair says it is time to look at every wrestler in the world today and say guess what, I’m back! Flair says read what you want to read and believe what you want to believe but go to bed every night knowing there is only one world heavyweight champion today and its the Nature Boy! Flair says no matter who it is but guys like Vader, Windham, Rude, and Steamboat its time for them to wake up because he lives for this. Flair says he lives and die by to be the man you got to beat the man.

They go back to Bischoff and Missy on the beach towards the entrance. They discuss the main event between the Super Powers vs. Masters of the Power Bomb. Missy says there is no doubt in her mind that the masters of the power bomb will stomp out Sting and Davey Boy Smith.

Match 8: Sting/Davey Boy Smith vs. Vader/Sid Vicious

Just wanna say that Sting and Davey Boy looked awesome together as a tag team. They just looked awesome. Anyways, we start this one off with Sting and Sid. Sid gets right in the face of Sting and shoves him but Sting retaliates with a tackle and some right hands to Sid. Sting then drives Sid face first into the mat and goes for a sunset flip that Sid doesn’t go down for. Sting then drives Sid into the mat again and then a big clothesline but it does nothing as Sid picks up Sting and just dumps him with a one handed choke slam. We are off and running here. All four men get in the ring as Sid throws out Davey Boy and Vader throws out Sting. Sid and Vader are celebrating in the ring as Sting and Davey Boy climb to the top rope and come off and nail Vader and Sid with clotheslines. That looked pretty damn sweet with both guys jumping off the top rope at the same time like that.

The Super Powers have the advantage as Sid and Vader go to the outside and regroup. This crowd is hot as hell for Sting and Davey Boy right now. Sid tries to get back into the ring but Sting ends up dropping him with some right hands. Bulldog gets the tag in as Sid tags in Vader. These two big guys tie up and Vader just starts mauling the Bulldog in corner with lefts and rights. Vader ends up picking up the Bulldog for a suplex but Davey Boy goes over and ends up going for a suplex of his own on Vader and he gets him in the standing vertical suplex. What strength and power by Davey Boy there. That was so damn impressive.

Vader kicks out of the pin so Davey gets up and charges at Vader and Vader just drops him with a big ass clothesline type move where he uses both of his arms and just smacks the head of the Bulldog. Sid gets the tag in and Vader just runs into Bulldog and Sid ends up dropping him with a big boot. Sid continues to keep control with fists and kicks and rest holds. Your typical offense for a guy the size of Sid. Sid tags in Vader and he comes in and nails Davey Boy with another shot off the ropes. Vader gets pissed off and rips his mask off as Sting tries to get in to help out Davey Boy.

Davey Boy goes for a sunset flip but Vader tries to jump on him but Davey gets out of the way. Sid tags in and drops Bulldog with an ax handle off the middle rope. Bulldog breaks free and drops Sid with a body slam and he tries for a tag but Sid grabs him and tags in Vader. Harley Race gets on the apron to hold up the Bulldog and Vader ends up running into him and knocking Harley off the apron. Davey finally tags in Sting and he comes in a house of fire and lays in the rights to both guys.Sid is in a rocking chair position on the ropes as he drops Vader with a big time drop kick.

Sting is cleaning house early on here. Sting moves out of the splash by Vader but Sid nails him from behind and then Vader drops him with a brutal sounding clothesline. This allows Vader and Sid to regain control. Sid gets the tag and he comes in and works over Sting. Sid chokes Sting for a little while until he tags in Vader, who comes in and just lays in the rights and lefts to the head. Vader climbs up to the middle rope and he ends up nailing Sting with the move he has been doing all night. Vader then picks up Sting and puts him on the top rope and Vader goes up with him and tries to hit him with the Superplex. Sting starts biting Vader as he knocks him off the rope.

Sid gets tagged back in and he starts working the midsection of Sting. Sid misses an elbow as both guys are laid out in the middle of the ring. Sting gets the tag to Davey Boy and he comes in red hot and starts nailing Sid with numerous clotheslines. He goes for a third one but Sid nails him with a big boot. Vader gets tagged in and he picks up Davey Boy and drops him with the samoan drop in the corner. We finally get a pin attempt and Davey Boy kicks out at 2. Vader ends up going to the middle rope and goes for the Vader Splash and he nails Davey Boy with it. Vader goes for the cover but Sting ends up making the save.

Sid comes into the ring and throws Sting to the apron and they start brawling on the outside. Meanwhile, Vader goes to the top rope and nails his moonsault on Davey Boy. Sting then comes out of no where and nails Vader with a splash over the top from the apron. Davey Boy goes for a crucifix pin and he gets the 1-2-3 on Vader. Your winners by way of pinfall….The Super Powers Davey Boy Smith and Sting!

After the match is over, Vader goes out towards the commentary table and starts yelling at Tony Schiavone. Vader then picks up a chair and just slams it on the ground.

Recap:
This was a pretty good match to end the show. The things Vader was doing at this time were just incredible and a joy to watch. The moonsault at the end as well as the Vader Splash off the middle rope are just awesome to see. Sid did his part with the big ass one handed choke slam on Sting at the start of the match. All in all this was a great way to send the fans home happy and a nice way to finish up this pay per view. I would recommend checking out this match at least once because you won’t be disappointed.

Show Recap:
Well that about does it for another episode of the Event Center right here on CrazyMax. This card was pretty solid from top to bottom and is a joy to watch. Most of the matches delivered outside of a couple and it definitely makes this show worth watching. The opener was solid between Orndorff and Simmons but the finish kind of ruined that one for me. Erik Watts vs. Regal was different but entertaining because I was surprised that Watts hung with Regal as well as he did. The tag match between Tex and Shanghi vs. 2 Cold and Bagwell wasn’t bad either. 2 Cold looked awesome during the match and so did Bagwell. He moved rather quickly and got the best possible match out of Tex and Shanghi.

Johnny B. Badd and Maxx Payne was just eh to me because it was too much like a wrestling match when it should have been a brawl based off what Maxx did to Badd at Clash of the Champions. The Blondes vs. Horsemen was tremendous and really highlighted how good of a tag team the Blondes really were. Just a great match up and between Austin and Arn Anderson its really hard to say who was the best guy in the match. All four guys delivered and it is the best match on the card.

Rhodes vs. Rude was the second best match and again was fun as hell from beginning to end. I liked the Iron Man challenge aspect of this match because it really helped out the ending because they were both trying to get that quick pin at the end but couldn’t get it done. The match told a great story and it really highlighted how great both guys really were.

The last two matches were sloppy but they weren’t bad and are fun to watch. The ending of the title match really ruins the whole match for me. Flair didn’t do much more than punches and chops during the match but to get a pin fall victory with the figure four after it only being applied for 2-3 seconds is a joke. The fact the bell didn’t ring right away really took away from the finish as well. The commentators were even surprised with the finish because it felt like it wasn’t supposed to happen. That took away from the whole match for me and thats a shame because both of those guys can really go.

The main event was another solid tag team match on a card with 2 other pretty good tag matches. Sting and Bulldog looked awesome together and I am glad that we got at least one main event out of them together. Vader and Sid were the perfect opponents for them and it made for a good main event. Bulldog looked good and Sting stole the show if you ask me. Vader doing a moonsault was bad ass as hell. But this match suffered a little bit because of the finish. The crucifix pin after nothing pins your Heavyweight Champion? That doesn’t make much sense to me but I guess it works because it allows the Bulldog to get another title shot later on down the line. All in all this was a good way to send the crowd home happy so i can’t complain too much.

Well there you have it, I hope you enjoyed this review of WCW Beach Blast 1993. This was a fun show to watch and I hope you enjoyed the read as well. I am going to be switching things up going forward with the reviews so look out for a change there. Less play by play, more opinions, and just the meat and potatoes of what people look for when it comes to reading these things. We will be continuing our summer series here with WWF SummerSlam 1991 next. Until then, thanks again for reading and be on the look out for whats coming up next right here on the Event Center only on CrazyMax!

Television Rewind Episode 9: WWF SummerSlam Spectacular 1991

Introduction:
Hello and welcome back to Television Rewind. Last time you saw us we were going back to 1989 and enjoying an episode of WCW World Wide Wrestling. This time we are heading back to the WWF and heading to the Summer of 1991. Thats right we are getting you prepped for the SummerSlam 1991 with the SummerSlam Spectacular USA Special. These shows were always pretty good and they did a really good job of getting you ready for the upcoming pay per view. This one should be no different and it has been a long time since I have seen it so I am ready to get this one started. So without further ado I present to you WWF SummerSlam Spectacular 1991!

Show Opening:

Vince opens up the show by running through some of the card. We get Hawk vs. Knobbs, Bret Hart vs. Barbarian, and a special interview with Sid Justice. We also get Steamboat/Bulldog/Tornado vs. all three members of the Orient Express. We also get Virgil going one on one a mystery opponent hand picked by Million Dollar Man. We then get to the commentary table where Vince and Bobby Heenan are waiting. Vince calls Heenan a beach bum. Heenan then says that he can’t wait for the main event between Hogan and Slaughter for the WWF title. Heenan says it is going to make him laugh when Hogan goes to SummerSlam without the WWF Title. Heenan wants to know what Hogan is going to do, hide behind Warrior? We all know he is snake bitten. Heenan then does a snake with his hand and acts like he is biting Vince with it. That was awesome.

Match 1: Hawk vs. Brian Knobbs

The match starts off with Knobbs stalling and running from Hawk. They finally go for a tie up but Knobbs hits Hawk with a boot then some right hands but Hawk retaliates with some rights of his own. Hawk ends up taking Knobbs and slamming him face first into the mat and Knobbs bounces up and falls to the outside between the middle ropes. We get another tie up and Knobbs hits a knee on Hawk and then some right hands. Hawk ducks a clothesline and then Knobbs ducks and Hawk grabs him and slams him on his back by his head. Hawk then drops his fist and then picks up Knobbs and nails him with some chops.

Hawk climbs to the middle rope and does the 10 count of punches to Knobbs. Hawk whips Knobbs into the corner and Hawk charges in and Knobbs moves out of the way and he goes shoulder first into the post. Jimmy then distracts the ref and Knobbs nails Hawk in the back with a chair. Hawk tries to get back into the ring but Knobbs drops him with a club to the back. Hawk finally gets in and he gets whipped into the rope and dropped with a back elbow. Knobbs then turns Hawk over with a Boston crab. Knobbs applying a wrestling hold? I’m shocked. Hawk presses out of it and flings Knobbs to the outside through the middle rope.

Knobbs quickly gets back in the ring and nails Hawk in the back to keep control of the match. Knobbs picks up Hawk and drops him with a body slam. Jimmy Hart on the outside said “you got him right where you want him, it’s over know.” Knobbs then gets Hawk in a camel clutch in the middle of the ring. Knobbs lets go of the hold and drops two elbows on Hawk and gets a 2 count out of it. Knobbs then drops a head butt to the lower back of Hawk. Knobbs then gets Hawk in the camel clutch again to continue to work on the lower back. Hawk powers out of the move and stands up with Knobbs on his back and he drops him in the middle of the ring.

Hawk bounces off the rope and nails Knobbs with a big ass boot and he follows that up with a flying shoulder tackle. Hawk hits Knobbs with a power slam off the irish whip but Knobbs rakes the eyes of Hawk to regain control. Knobbs goes in to the corner but gets met with a big boot. Hawk quickly goes to the top rope and nails Knobbs with a clothesline and gets the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Road Warrior Hawk!

Recap:
This was a pretty decent opener here between the two. Knobbs worked the back the majority of the match and Hawk got in his favorite spot, going shoulder first into the steel post. The finish was quick and sudden but I liked it here. The clothesline was pretty awesome off the top rope. All in all a pretty solid opener and it makes you want to see the guys go at it at SummerSlam.

They show the Ultimate Warrior getting help with Jake Roberts again. This is the scene where he gets put in the room with all of the snakes that has already been reviewed right here on CrazyMax. You can see that review here.

Match 2: Bret Hart vs. Barbarian

We get a tie up and Barbarian just throws him off and shows off his power. We get another tie up and this time Bret gets a head lock on Barbarian. Bret ducks a clothesline but runs into a shoulder of the Barbarian and he just falls down. Barbarian gets a head lock on Bret but he pushes him off and then Barbarian just nails Bret with a big ass shoulder block that sends Bret flying to the outside. Bret gets back in and starts working over the arm. Bret tosses him over and continues to work the arm with an arm bar with some knees to the arm mixed in.

Bret is holding on to the arm and Barbarian just picks him up by the throat and holds him in the air before Bret’s weight drives him back down. Barbarian whips Bret into the ropes and ducks early so Bret hits him with a right hand and then two straight drop kicks and that sends the Barbarian to the outside. Bret jumps off the apron but Barbarian catches him and drives him back first into the apron. They then show the Coach who is coming down to check out what’s going on. Doing a little pre-match game planning while Barbarian picks up Bret and drives him back first into the steel post.

We come back from commercial with the Coach still looking on while Bret gets back in the ring. Barbarian then steps on the throat of Bret and chokes him out a little bit. Barbarian picks Bret up and nails him with a chop. Barbarian then whips Bret into the corner and Bret goes in chest first as he crumbles to the mat. I always hated that spot because it doesn’t look to pleasant. Thankfully Bret and Owen are the only ones who really did it. Barbarian then picks up Bret and drops him with a back breaker and he gets a 2 count.

They show the Coach taking notes on the match. This is really awesome and it really makes the Coach gimmick work. Barbarian whips Bret into the ropes and he goes for a hip toss but Bret blocks it but the Barbarian immediately nails Bret with a brutal looking clothesline that sends Bret back to the mat. That looked stiff as hell and Bret sold it like a million bucks. Just a sweet looking spot there.

Barbarian then picks up Bret and gets him in a long delayed vertical suplex. He had him up for a good 7-8 seconds there before he dumped him. Barbarian was pretty damn good. Barbarian goes for the cover and gets a 2 1/2 count. Barbarian shoves Bret into the corner as he lays in a choke hold. He then whips Bret into the other turnbuckle but stops him midway through and then just whips him back first into the corner. Barbarian then picks up Bret and gets him in a bear hug in the center of the ring. Bret breaks free from the bear hug by biting the face of the Barbarian.

Barbarian lays in a few big time chops on Bret and whips him into the corner but he gets caught with a boot when coming in. Bret then hits the Barbarian with a clothesline off the middle rope. Both guys get up and Bret hits the Barbarian with an atomic drop and he follows that up with some big time right hands. Bret then climbs the middle rope and lays in 10 more rights to the Barbarian. Bret hits a side Russian leg sweep and he goes for the cover for a 2 count. Bret picks up the Barbarian and hits him with a backbreaker. Bret then goes off the middle rope with an elbow to the Barbarian.

Bret is arguing with the ref as Barbarian gets up and just drills Bret with a vicious big boot that knocks Bret out. Barbarian then pushes Bret to the outside as he goes out there and gets a little bit of a rest. Bret gets up on the apron and Barbarian goes for a body slam back into the ring but Bret ends up reversing it and gets the Barbarian in a small package for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Bret Hart!

Recap:
This was a decent little match here as well. Barbarian had control for a little bit to long because he was starting to look lost on what to do to the Hitman towards the end there. Bret got in all of his spots at the end and it didn’t really lead to the finish which was a good thing. I liked the sneaky win here because the Barbarian is somebody that you can’t really just put out with a finisher or something along those lines when you are Bret Hart. So getting the roll up pin was a great ending to a pretty solid match here. Bret showed how great he really is by the story telling that was done during this match. Job well done by both guys.

Ringside Interview: Sid Justice

Gene starts it off by saying that there many things going on here in the WWF that he has absolutely no control over. Gene says there is tremendous speculation on how he is going to referee the match made in hell at SummerSlam. Sid says Gene is right that there are a lot of things that he can’t control outside of the ring. Sid promises Gene, and everyone else, that he can control what happens inside the ring. Gene says he doesn’t think anyone will argue that he will be bring authority to the match. Gene does say, however, there is a very delicate balance in this handicap tag team bout. Gene says if Sid signs with Slaughter and his team then it would go one way. Gene then says if Sid sides with Hogan and Warrior then we would know how it will go. Gene wants to know how Sid can remain impartial.

Sid said that is what the problem is with Gene, he doesn’t know Sid Justice. He says Gene doesn’t know what Sid stands for. He says Sid Justice is a man that stands alone and at SummerSlam he can promise only one thing and that is that Justice will be served.

Promo By: Sgt. Slaughter, Gen. Adnan, & Col. Mustafa

Adnan is hollering in his foreign tongue. and I have no idea what he is saying. Slaughter says that the Immortal Slime will go one on one right before SummerSlam. Slaughter tells us that in war there are many battles and that Slaughter is going to take back his title before SummerSlam. Slaughter says that Hogan’s partner will not be Ultimate or he may not even be there. Slaughter says at SummerSlam it may just be Hogan vs. the core of destruction and it will be Slaughters way and thats Slaughters rules and thats an order!

Match 3: I.R.S. vs. Mark Thomas

Before the match IRS hops on the mic and says states and local governments are in financial trouble so it is a good time to get people to start paying their taxes. We start with a tie up and IRS ends up dropping Thomas with a big right hand and he follows that up with a body slam. IRS drops a snap elbow two times off the ropes. IRS whips Thomas into the ropes and drops him with a flying clothesline. IRS then gets an abominable stretch and then he just falls and starts rubbing the guys face into the mat. He picks up the guy and drops him with the Write Off for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….I.R.S!

Recap:
This was just a squash match and really nothing special. IRS was a solid worker and sometimes was fun to watch but he never really amounted to match and this match is symbolic of his run. Nothing good, nothing bad, but just eh. You can skip this one.

They show highlights of Macho Man’s bachelor party from Prime Time Wrestling.

Match 4: Texas Tornado/The Dragon/British bulldog vs. Orient Express

This is the one and only occurrence where we got all three members of the Orient Express in the same match at the same time. Not sure this happened again or before this one so it’s pretty cool to see. This one starts off with the Dragon and Tanaka. Tanaka quickly pushes Steamboat into the ropes but he gets dropped with a shoulder block. Tanaka then throws Steamboat out of the ring but he skins the cat and gets right back in. Tanaka then gets dropped with a huge back body drop and a few chops before Steamboat tags in Davey Boy. Davey drops Tanaka with a big time shoulder block and he follows that up with a huge clothesline that turns Tanaka inside out.

Davey ends up hitting the ropes but Kato grabs him by the foot and Tanaka nails Davey in the lower back. Kato gets the tag in and he runs the ropes a few times before Davey leap frogs him twice and then drops him with a drop kick. Tornado gets a tag and he comes in and works the arm of Kato. Kato ends up reversing the arm bar and tags in Sato but he comes in and gets dropped with a big right hand by the Tornado. Sato whips Kerry into the ropes and Tanaka hits him with a knee to the back.

Kerry ends up getting a quick tag to Steamboat but he comes in and gets caught right away until Sato tags in Kato. Kato whips the Dragon into the ropes but he reverses it and hits Kato with an elbow to the mid section. He goes for a pile driver but Sato distracts the ref as Tanaka comes in and he hits the Dragon in the back then hits him with a flying forearm. The ref gets distracted again and this allows Fuji to nail the Dragon with his cain from the outside. Kato comes back in and starts working over Steamboat in his corner. Steamboat tries to break free but all three members of the Orient Express start working him over in the corner.

Sato nails the Dragon with a beautiful side kick out of an arm bar. Sato tags in Tanaka and they nail the Dragon with a double chop. Dragon quickly gets up and tries to break free but Kato grabs him by the hair to slow down his momentum. Kato gets in the ring and he starts working over Steamboat in the corner. Steamboat reverses an irish whip as Kato goes up and over and he nails the Dragon with a side kick. Tanaka gets the tag back in and he starts working him over with chops and right hands. We get more illegal double teaming as Tanaka whips the Dragon into the ropes for a back body drop.

Tanaka flips the Dragon back in from the apron. He quickly makes the tag to Kato and he comes in and works the lower back and neck area of Steamboat with a camel clutch. Dragon nearly gets the tag but Tanaka comes in and interferes to prevent the tag. Tanaka hits the Dragon with an elbow to the midsection and then a kick to the head. Kato gets a tag and he immediately distracts the other team so he and Tanaka can double team the Dragon. Tanaka goes jumping over Kato and hits the Dragon in the lower back with all his weight. Tanaka follows that up with a nice crescent kick that drops the Dragon for a 2 1/2 count.

Tanaka ducks early and the Dragon hits him with a swinging neck breaker. Dragon is going for the tag but Kato quickly comes in prevents him from tagging in with a head lock on the mat. Dragon gets free of the head lock and ends up hitting Kato with a side kick. This frees him up to get the tag to the Bulldog. Bulldog nails Kato with a back body drop and then a gorilla press to Tanaka and he throws him on Kato. Sato comes in and he gets dropped with a gorilla press slam.

Kato tries to go up and over on the Bulldog but he catches him and hits him with the running power slam for a 2 count before Tanaka breaks up the pin. Sato comes charging in and he ends up getting dropped with the power slam as well. Bulldog tags in the Dragon and he gets the flying cross body off the top rope on Kato and he gets the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall…..British Bulldog/Texas Tornado/The Dragon!

Recap:
This was a damn good match here. The Express worked so fast and were fluid in their work that it’s hard to deny. This is definitely better than the SummerSlam match but I believe that has more to do with time more than anything else. The three main guys in the match did their part and Dragon did what he did best and thats sell for the bad guys. All in all a really good match here that was fun to watch and is enjoyable. I’d recommend checking it out.

They go to the announce table where Vince and Heenan discuss the match made in hell. After discussing the match Heenan says it’s time to talk about the real world champion Ric Flair. Heenan then pulls out the big gold belt for the world to see. Heenan says if Flair decides to come to the WWF then he should get the winner of the match tonight of either Hulk Hogan or Sgt. Slaughter.

Match 5: WWF Heavyweight Title Match: Hulk Hogan (c) vs. Sgt. Slaughter

They start up with a tie up and Hogan sends Slaughter flying back into the corner using his power advantage. Slaughter tells the ref that Hogan pulled the hair which we all know is bullshit. They go for a tie up but Slaughter kicks Hogan and then drives him back into the corner with right hands and clubs to the chest. Slaughter lays in the rapid rights and then tries an irish whip on Hogan but he reverses it and hits Slaughter with a back drop. He follows that up with a clothesline and then rams Slaughter into the steel post on the inside.

Hogan then gets on top of Slaughter and just lays in the right hands. Hogan ducks early for a back drop but Slaughter sees it and he kicks Hogan in the face and then rakes his back with his nails. Slaughter nails Hogan with a right hand and sends him to the outside. The ref gets distracted by Slaughter so Adnan can ram Hogan into the apron. Mustafa comes over and does the same thing and then spits on Hogan. What a heel. They get Hogan back in the ring and Slaughter starts biting Hogan in the face in the corner. Slaughter then drops Hogan with 3 right hands as they head to commercial break.

We come back from break and Slaughter is choking Hogan over the top rope. Mustafa then gives Slaughter a chair and he nails Hogan in the back with it as Adnan distracts the ref. Slaughter goes for the cover and gets a 2 count. Hogan is busted open again, just like Wrestlemania 7. Slaughter goes up to the top rope and drops a knee right in the lower back of Hogan. Hogan kicks out at 2 with authority and he starts to hulk up. Slaughter continues to lay in the right hands but it does nothing to Hogan.

Hogan hits Slaughter with three right hands and then drops him with the big boot. Mustafa gets up on the apron and he gets leveled by Hogan. The ref gets distracted by Mustafa and Adnan throws powder in the eyes of Hogan. Slaughter distracts the ref as Adnan and Mustafa start laying the boots to Hogan. The ref finally turns around and sees what is going on as all three guys work over Hogan. They end up throwing the ref out of the ring as Slaughter gets Hogan in the Camel Clutch and Mustafa adds some more pressure by putting Slaughter in the clutch at the same time.

Special guest referee Sid Justice comes out and Slaughter immediately breaks the hold. Hogan rolls to the outside as Justice confronts all three guys of the triangle of terror. Hogan picks up the chair on the outside and he is about to nail Slaughter with it but Sid grabs the chair from Hogan before he can hit them. Justice then slams the chair down on the ground and walks off. Sid has control of all of this. The Fink announces that Hogan is the winner by disqualification.

Recap:
This was a pretty good match and the angle at the end was a perfect build to the SummerSlam match. The match itself was reminiscent of Wrestlemania 7 but with a lot more interference. This was done, of course, to have Sid come out and gain control of both sides of the tag match. Sid getting them off of Hogan and then stopping Hogan from using the chair was a perfect way to sell this match for SummerSlam. There were a lot of question marks with where Sid stood and this furthered those questions and made you want to tune in to find out what happens. Job well done all around here.

They show highlights of Earthquake attacking Andre the Giant on Superstars.

Match 6: Natural Disasters vs. Ray Garcia/Ross Greenberg

Typhoon and Garcia start off the match and Typhoon drops him with a club to the back. Typhoon then drops him with the laziest clothesline I’ve ever seen. He just stands there and sticks his arm out and drops the guy. Typhoon hits an elbow off the ropes and then picks up Garcia and nails him with a standing drop kick. A guy 400 pounds shouldn’t be able to do that but he does it with ease. Earthquake gets the tag and he comes in and whips Garcia into the ropes and drops him with a back elbow.

Earthquake then drops his wind up elbow on to Garcia. Earthquake whips Garcia into the corner and tags in Typhoon. Earthquake then does a big splash in the corner and Typhoon comes in and does the same thing. They whip Greenberg into the ropes and drop him with a double shoulder block. They throw Greenberg to the outside and Typhoon drops Garcia with a body slam. Typhoon nails the Typhoon Splash as Earthquake hits his big butt drop for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Natural Disasters!

Recap:
Another squash here that kind of sucked. I was hoping for the Disasters to do some more damage to these guys but it just didn’t happen. They used their size and thats about it. Really nothing to see here and just filler at this point.

Barbershop w/ Brutus Beefcake: Sensational Sherri is his Guest

Brutus wants to know if Sherri has picked out her wedding gift for Macho Man and Elizabeth. Sherri says she has picked out the perfect for both of them and she would like to deliver them to them right now. She said she would slap the face of the Macho Man and he would like to puke all over Elizabeth. Beefcake says that is a little bit of extreme. He says this is a joyous celebration and its going to be a good time so does she think that is a little bit extreme? Sherri says it is not extreme because at Wrestlemania 7 the no good for nothing, over the hill ex champion lost to the better man. Sherri then says after that he gets down on his knee and proposes to a phony woman in Miss Elizabeth.

Sherri says on top of that, as if that is not enough to make you sick, she said “oh yeah”. Sherri then says as if it that is not sick enough, he then invites the whole world to his wedding. She says the wedding is nothing more than a disgrace for the man. She said if Savage is any kind of man he would take her somewhere else to get married. Everyone else is going to have hate and resentment for Elizabeth and for Savage. Beefcake he thinks she’s a little bitter about this. Beefcake says Sherri used to worship the ground that Savage walked on. Beefcake thinks this is going to be a story book ending and a happy ending.

Sherri says that marriages are days and vows that are made up. Sherri says she is going to make a promise and that promise is that the match made in heaven between the Macho King and Elizabeth will not be so heavenly. Sherri says it will not be the match made in heaven but it will be the match made in hell if she has anything to do with it. Beefcake says that he has arranged Sherri’s transportation to and from the wedding. Beefcake then comes back from behind the curtain and hands Sherri a broom. She gets livid and starts swinging the broom at Beefcake as the segment ends.

Gene runs through more of the card and he tells us that the Bushwhackers are going to have Andre the Giant in their corner for their match against the Natural Disasters. We also have Greg Valentine vs. IRS, the 6 man tag featuring Texas Tornado/Dragon/Bulldog vs. Power N Glory/Warlord. They then come back to Gene and he says it is all on pay per view and that is the only way to see it. Gene then says we got a match made in heaven and a match made in hell and we can see it live on pay per view on August 26th!

Match 7: Virgil vs. DiBiase’s Mystery Man (Barry Darsow in a mask)

Before the match starts DiBiase gets on the mic and tells us that Virgil is in the back and that Virgils dream in life is to beat DiBiase at SummerSlam and taking in his Million Dollar Belt. DiBiase says he heard Virgil is very confident he can get the job done. DiBiase says he paid a lot of money for this guy to come out and take out Virgil for him. DiBiase says if Virgil is a man then he will come out and face his guy.

Virgil obliges and we got ourselves a main event. Virgil dances around the ring as if he is a top flight boxer until they tie up and the Mystery Man just drops Virgil and then lays in the boots. The guy picks up Virgil by the throat and puts him in the corner and chokes him out some more. He then takes Virgil and rakes the eyes across the top rope. The Mystery guy then takes Virgil and chokes him across the top rope. The Mystery guy goes for a back elbow but gets nailed with a right hand instead. Virgil starts laying in the right hands before he whips the Mystery guy into the corner and hits him with a hip toss.

They tie up again and this time the Mystery Guy does a go behind until Virgil reverses it with a go behind of his own. The Mystery guy reverses it again and he takes Virgil down until Virgil rolls out and puts him in an arm. They get back on their feet and the Mystery guy nails Virgil with a right hand. He whips Virgil into the corner but Virgil goes up and over and rolls up the Mystery guy for a 2 count. Virgil then lays in some more right hands and he starts working the arm. Virgil drops the guy with a shoulder block and then he goes up and over but the Mystery Guy catches him and he drops him across the top rope with a clothesline.

The Mystery guy picks up Virgil and drops him across the top rope again. The Mystery guy whips Virgil into the ropes and he gets him in a sleeper hold but Virgil gets out of it rather quickly. The Mystery guy ends up dropping Virgil with a clothesline but Virgil gets up and gets the Mystery Guy in the Million Dollar Dream. The Mystery Guy walks backwards and gets near DiBiase and he ends up grabbing the foot of Virgil to free the Mystery Guy. The guy then nails Virgil with a big ass clothesline that sends him flying over the top rope. Virgil appears to miss the rope and he just goes crashing to the floor. That looked bad.

DiBiase lays in the boots to Virgil on the outside until he gets back on the apron. The Mystery guy then brings Virgil back in to the ring with a suplex. The Mystery Guy then hits a snap suplex on Virgil. The Mystery guy goes for a splash and ends up getting punched in the face by Virgil. DiBIase is on the outside laughing it up but he doesn’t realize that Virgil went for the pin and got the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall….Virgil!

Recap:
This match was terrible. Darsow was in between gimmicks so at least they gave him something to do to kill time before the Repo Man shows up. Virgil was terrible and I am shocked at how over he got. He got he rub from Piper and DiBiase and if you are a guy looking to get a push then those are two guys that can get you over. But this match was the shits and not worth checking out.

The Mountie gives us a tour of the New York Correctional Facility. The Mountie goes through everything that he ends up going through at SummerSlam. After seeing this, the segments at SummerSlam are even more hilarious and this makes those segments even funnier. The Mountie says at SummerSlam Boss Man better get ready to serve hard time.

Show Closing:

The show finishes up with Bobby and Vince talking about SummerSlam, of course. Vince says he wants to take this opportunity on behalf of the lovely Elizabeth and the Macho Man to invite all of us personally to their wedding, the Match Made in Heaven at SummerSlam. Heenan says after Savage says I do then he won’t anymore. Heenan says he can’t wait for them to ask if anyone objects and to the wedding and then he asks Vince who is going to raise their hand. Vince asks who it is and Heenan says he will have to tune in to SummerSlam to find out. Vince transitions to the Match Made in Hell. Heenan wants to know what Hogan is going to do with his partner Ultimate Warrior.

Heenan says Hogan is all busted up and that the Ultimate Warrior is close to cashing in his ticket for SummerSlam. Vince asks about the jail house match and whats going to happen. Heenan says the loser is going to have to stay with roaches and rats many other things. They run over the other title matches such as the tag team titles and then the IC title plus the million dollar title match. Heenan says Bret is good but he isn’t Perfect. He also says that Virgil is so stupid it is likely he will go out and have the belt bronzed. Vince then wraps up the show by telling us to join them at SummerSlam!

Show Recap:
This was a really fun show from beginning to end. They did a really good job of pushing every match on the card and really made you want to check out what is going to happen. If there wasn’t a big storyline with a match then they put them in a match on this card so they could talk about the match. Thats smart booking and a good way to push a pay per view.

The matches themselves were pretty decent throughout the whole show but everything on this show just plays a back drop to selling SummerSlam for the following week. When you watch this show in that realm then this was a home run. However, if this was a regular show on a Monday night then you would most likely be disappointed with the action on this one. Hogan and Slaughter was decent but nothing special. Hawk and Knobbs was a good opener and really made you want to see the actual tag match at SummerSlam.

The squash matches did their part by allowing Vince and Heenan to talk about the guys match at SummerSlam. The Bret Hart vs. Barbarian match was probably the best match on the card and thats because of Bret really. I also loved the fact that the Coach was down ringside taking notes and game planning so he can take it back to Mr. Perfect and prepare him for the title match. I know it’s all a work but little things like that really stick out and make things that you normally wouldn’t care about seem more important. Just a really good job there.

Well that wraps up this episode of Television Rewind. We have been all over the place with this column and this show is no different. We are doing this one first because in a couple of reviews we will be going back and reviewing SummerSlam 1991. There are some good, some bad, and some terrible on that card and I can’t wait to check it out. This show served a purpose and that was to get you to buy a pay per view and I would say they exceeded at doing that. The in ring work itself is nothing to write home about but it’s not bad either and there is at least one or two matches on this card that you could find entertaining.

I would definitely recommend checking this show out if you can get your hands on it because it was a really good way of selling a pay per view. Well that about does it for this episode of Television Rewind. I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I have and if you have questions, comments, or requests you can always shoot me a line on twitter @xstat32x. You can also leave a comment below. Thanks again for reading and coming back for more. Until next time, keep reading and enjoying your stay right here at CrazyMax!

Television Rewind Episode 8: WCW World Wide Wrestling: August 26th, 1989

Introduction:
Hello and welcome back to Television Rewind right here on CrazyMax. Last time you saw me was when we did the back to back WWF Face to Face special followed by Wrestlemania 5. Well this time we are heading back to WCW but this time we are going old school. Thats right we are going back to August of 1989 and we are going to the syndicated show World Wide Wrestling. The reason we are doing this show is because the Skyscrapers decide to destroy an entire gimmick and send them on their way and I can’t wait to see the brutality. I hope you are just as excited as I am to get this show going so let’s get to it.

Show Opening
There is no real opening to the show as we come on with the Skyscrapers coming out for their match against the Ding Dongs. So I guess we are diving right in so let’s get to it.

Match 1: Skyscrapers vs. Ding Dongs

Skyscrapers come to the ring and Spivey goes right after both members of the Ding Dongs. He’s not wasting any time just destroying these guys. Sid finally gets his jacket off and he starts going in on the members of the Ding Dongs. Spivey picks up one of the Ding Dongs and just drops him with a Razor’s Edge type move. Spivey whips the guy into the ropes and drops him with a big boot. Spivey picks up the Ding Dong and drops him with another power bomb. Spivey goes for the cover and he gets the 1-2-3. Your winners by pinfall….the Skyscrapers.

Oh but it’s not over yet. After the match Sid gets in the ring and just destroys a Ding Dong with a vicious clothesline. Long then tells Spivey and Sid to remove the masks of the Ding Dongs so they go ahead and do that. Sid picks up one of the Ding Dongs and drops him with a brutal power bomb and then he removes the mask. It’s so long for this shit gimmick idea and they will never been seen or heard from again. Thank goodness for that.

To add insult to injury, Norman is on the outside and he is trying to put the mask on but he can’t fit it on his fat ass head. They go to the replay and when they come back they go to Norman who finally got the mask on his head. He also put the second mask on a pole of some sort, not really sure what is going on there.

Recap:
This match lasted all of 50 seconds or so but it was just brutal. Spivey dropping the kid with two power bombs then the pin was all she wrote. The clothesline on the guy after the match was just brutal and uncalled for. You know he laid it in stiff because he didn’t give a shit about anyone or anything and you can tell here. All in all just a brutal 1-2 minutes of action here and I love it. Definitely worth checking out and definitely worth reviewing the show because of it. Thats how you get rid of a terrible gimmick idea.

Promo by: Wildfire Tommy Rich

Rich says it is good to be back in the NWA. Rich is calling out Lex Luger. Rich reminds us all that he beat Harley Race for the NWA World Heavyweight title. Rich says that Luger is saying Rich is easy pickings. Rich says that Luger has the big muscles and he has it all. Rich says the one thing he doesn’t have is the fans on his side and they are all saying whip Luger, whip Luger, whip Luger!

Match 2: Terry Funk vs. Lee Scott

Funk drops his hat on the mat so Lee Scott goes over and picks it up and puts it on his head. Funk turns around and sees this and he gets pissed off and just starts destroying Scott here. He’s laying in the lefts and rights to the back of Lee Scott. Funk then takes Scott and throws him through the middle rope but Scott holds on and he comes in and hits Funk with a drop kick but Funk no sells it and ends up nailing Scott with a clothesline. Funk then picks up Lee Scott and just dumps him with a brutal looking pile driver. Funk goes for the cover and he gets the 1-2-3. Your winner of the match by pinfall….Terry Funk!

After the match Funk takes his branding iron and brands Lee Scott right on his chest.

Recap:
Another quick squash match here and again it was just brutal. JR on commentary says you never touch a cowboys cowboy hat and that’s exactly how Funk reacted. He just took it to this guy and then dumped him with a brutal looking pile driver. No thanks on signing up for a match with Funk during this time frame. By the way, Funk looked in phenomenal shape here and he looked like a guy who was ready for a main event push and he really took it to a whole other level here. Funk in 89 was just amazing and it’s shame it seems to have been forgotten because of what he did later on in his career. If you ever get the chance go back and check out the work of Funk during this time frame. You won’t be disappointed.

Match 3: Sting vs. Bounty Hunter

The Bounty Hunter flexes in front of Sting and then Sting returns the favor by doing his scream to the fans. The Hunter calls for a test of strength and Sting obliges. Hunter kicks Sting but Sting isn’t fazed so he starts kicking the hell out of the Bounty Hunter and drives him to the corner. Sting then whips the Hunter into the other turnbuckle and Sting follows him in with the big time Stinger Splash in the corner. Sting then goes for the cover and he gets the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall…..Sting!

Recap:
Another quick squash match here. These guys are not wanting to work on this show because they are coming in and just hitting their finishers and getting the hell out of dodge. Can’t say that I blame them but shit can we get a 4-5 minute match here. Sting spent more time with the fans than he did in the ring. The splash was pretty sweet and we got the nice quick victory. Can’t really be upset with that.

Joe Pedicino Knows:

Joe’s fat ass lets us know where the NWA/WCW will be going forward. Joe says there is a challenge that he is interested in seeing and that is between Steve Williams and Mike Rotunda. They then show us some highlights of what has gone on between Williams and Rotunda. Joe tells us that the feud is going to come to a boiling point soon. Joe then talks about Clash of the Champions 8 and the tag team match between Ric Flair/Sting vs. Great Muta/Terry Funk. Joe says that he believes Funk is going to trap Flair during the tag match. Joe says the goal is to get Muta and Funk to stop Flair but Joe doesn’t think it is going to work.

Ringside Interview: Fabulous Freebirds

Ross says he knows the Birds have a lot to say about the teams that are challengers for their tag team titles. Garvin then says that sometimes he wants to smack him right in his face and that sometimes it makes him sick to his stomach. Garvin says at some point people are going to have to realize that they are the greatest tag team in wrestling today. Garvin says they are the champions and that they are the best. Garvin says they are the best looking tag team as well. Hayes tells us that Gordy shows up whenever he wants too. Hayes says last week that they have proven beyond a shadow of doubt that Gordy doesn’t need to be there because last week they took care of business against the stupid Steiner Brothers.

Hayes then asks Ross that the finest tag team competition is in the NWA. Ross says he agrees. Hayes then asks Ross that the guys holding the tag belts would have to be the best tag teams and Ross says it should be that way. Hayes says they are not sissies but they are the sexiest. Hayes says that the Midnight Express can forget it and the same for the Skyscrapers. Hayes then says that the Steiners have been forgotten a long time ago.

Promo by: Terry Funk & Gary Hart

Hart says he wants everyone to listen very carefully. Hart says that everyone knows that Flair is running scared from Terry Funk. Hart says that sooner or later Terry Funk is going to take what is more precious than anything Flair has owned and thats his gold. Hart says that his time as champion will be over sooner. Funk then starts singing a song of One Day At a Time. Funk says that Flair should change his theme song to One Day At a Time. Funk says that he knows the Lord only helps those who help themselves and that he is going to help himself to the World Championship. Funk says that Sting and Flair better watch out because the Jaytex Organization is coming their way One Day At a Time.

Match 4: Steiner Brothers vs. State Patrol

Scott and Wright start the match. Steiner gets a leg trip and then a leg lock to get control early. Wright then lays in some right hands and some boots as he tags in Parker. Scott then reverses an irish whip and drops Parker with a frankensteiner with ease. Steiner then picks up Parker and drops him with a brutal looking suplex. Rick gets the tag as they tie up in the middle of the ring. Parker drives him into the ropes as both members of State Patrol start working him over. Rick reverses the irish whip and drops Parker with a big time clothesline. Rick then gets on all fours and ends up biting Parker in the chest.

Wright gets the tag back in and he ties up with Rick and he rakes the eyes and goes for a head butt but Rick no sells it. Rick then picks up Wright and puts him on the top rope. Rick goes up to the middle rope and hits him with a power slam off the middle rope. Rick tags in Scott and he comes in and hits Wright with a running slam into the turnbuckle and then a shoulder breaker. Wright hits Scott with a right and tags in Parker but Scott immediately nails him with some right hands then a twisting belly to belly suplex for the 1-2-3. Your winners of the match by pinfall….the Steiner Brothers!

Recap:
The Steiners were amazing at this point. Both weren’t to big for their own good and they could just do some things in the ring that people their size shouldn’t be able to do. He nailed a frankensteiner like it was nothing at the start of the match. Just an amazing feat there. The suplexes were awesome and just their power was off the charts. The match itself was nothing special but these two were just awesome and are a joy to watch when they can just steam roll their opponents.

Backstage Interview: Ric Flair

Flair gets rewarded with the A&W King of the Slam. Flair thanks everyone for voting for him.

Match 5: NWA Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair vs. Brad Armstrong

Really? A NWA Heavyweight Title match on syndicated television? I’ll take it. This should be a really good match and this is definitely a pleasant surprise. We start this one off with a tie up but Flair quickly pushes him off but gets dropped with a shoulder block by Armstrong. We get a second tie up and this time Brad pushes off and Flair drops him with a shoulder block. We get a drop down and a leap frog and a hip toss by Brad Armstrong on Flair. We get a third tie up and again Flair hits Brad with a shoulder block but Brad hits Flair with a drop toe hold and he goes for a figure four but Flair kicks him off and ends up hitting him with a body slam.

This is great action so far. Brad Armstrong can really go and Flair will do a great job of selling and making things believable here. We get a standing head lock by Brad but Flair reverses it with a wrist lock rather quickly. Brad pushes Flair into the ropes again and again Flair drops Brad with a shoulder block. We get another tie up and another head lock and another shoulder block by Brad on Flair. This time Flair ends up hitting Armstrong with a hip toss and then a second hip toss then another wrist lock. Flair then switches it to an arm bar but Brad gets out of it with an arm drag.

We get a tie up again and this time Brad pushes Flair into the corner but Flair picks him up and drops him with a running atomic drop. Flair snaps Brad over and he ends up hitting him with the big knee out of the corner. Flair goes for the cover and gets a 2 count before Brad gets to the ropes. Brad gets Flair in a side head lock but Flair picks him up and drops him with a knee drop on his knee and he quickly gets him in the figure four but Brad quickly gets into the ropes. Flair starts snaps Armstrong over and he rolls to the outside to take a breather and get his leg right before getting back in.

Flair grabs Brad and tries to suplex him into the ring but Brad goes over and hits Flair with a roll up for a 2 count. Brad gets up and when he turns around Flair nails him with a big time chop. Flair whips Brad into the corner but Brad comes out of it and hits Flair with a big clothesline. Brad then whips Flair into the corner and Flair goes up and over and then runs to the other corner and comes off the top rope with an elbow and he actually hits it this time. Flair then tosses Brad across the ring and a couple of times but after the second one Brad gets up right away and nails Flair with a drop kick. Flair blocks a hip toss and gets a quick pin using an abdominal stretch pin for the 1-2-3. Your winner and still NWA Heavyweight Champion…..Ric Flair!

Recap:
This was a pretty damn good match right here. They didn’t have a lot of time but Flair sold well and worked well with Brad here and did his best to make him look good. Brad held his own and really made the match believable. Just a really good tv match here and its worth checking out if you ever get the chance. Brad was underrated and could have been something with the proper push. Shame he never really amounted to much of anything in the long run.

Promo by: Jim Cornette:

Cornette tells us that the Freebirds have been blocking a title defense against the Midnight Express every chance they get. Cornette says they know what is going to happen if they ever get them in the ring. Cornette says no one should forget that anything that has happened in the tag team division in the last 5 years was all done by the Midnight Express. Cornette then tells us that the Midnight Express are going to be the same team in the 90s and that no one should forget it.

Match 6: Flyin’ Brian vs. Cruel Connection

The Connection attacks Brian from behind and he ends up whipping him into the corner but Pillman goes up and over and hits a drop kick and then an arm drag on the Connection. Connection whips Pillman into the ropes and gets hit with a shoulder block and then a flying clothesline. Pillman then arm drags the Connection over and gets him in an arm bar but the Connection breaks free with a poke to the eye. Cruel Connection follows it up with a couple of right hands then a body slam. He goes for a splash but Pillman moves out of the way and quickly goes to the top rope and nails the Cruel Connection with a a beautiful drop kick.

Pillman gets the Connection in a head lock but the Connection pushes him off and he hits Pillman with a shoulder block. Connection ends up throwing Pillman to the outside. And he tries to ram him head first into the turnbuckle but Pillman blocks it. Pillman then jumps to the top rope and ends up hitting a cross body off the top rope for the 1-2-3. Your winner by pinfall…..Flyin’ Brian!

Recap:
Pillman looked pretty good here. His drop kick was pretty damn awesome off the top rope. It looked really good and it looked like his feet were pinned to the chest of the Cruel Connection as he went down. A quick squash here to wrap up the show but it was entertaining and went fast.

Ringside Interview: Steiner Brothers w/ Missy Hyatt & Robin Green

Scott says that before we talk about the title match he wants to know what happened to the glasses and the ponytail. Rick says he went over to her place and this is what he ended up with and that he isn’t sure where those things went. Woman looked amazingly hot here. Scott asks if Rick is happy. Scott says if he is happy then Scott is happy. Scott says there is one peanut head manager who thinks he has the tag team of the 90s. Scott says he has to give credit where credit is due to the Skyscrapers. Scott says it’s not the size of the man that makes the man and that it isn’t the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog.

Ah yes these stupid cliches for the under dog. Gotta love it. Rick says that the Freebirds come out here and say they are going to do all these things but with Gordy gone they will do what they can to win the match. Robin starts flirting with Rick and he loses his train of thought. Scott says that the Steiner Brothers have what it takes to take what they got. Scott says if his brother is happy then he couldn’t be happier. Rick then says that he will be all right as Jim Ross wraps up the show.

Show Recap:
Well there you have it. Just a random ass show from WCW in 1989 and it was actually pretty entertaining. The matches went really fast and it made this show go by rather fast as well. All of the matches delivered one way or another and you can be entertained by any of them if you really want to be. There was some brutal squashes from the Skyscrapers and Terry Funk. You had some back and forth stuff between the Steiners as well as the Pillman match.

We also got a pretty good NWA title match between Flair and Armstrong that i was happy to see. Flair really did do what he could to help Brad get over and it worked if you ask me. I left the match wanting to see some more of Brad Armstrong and I was a little bit disappointed that it ended so quickly. I would have been fine if they didn’t have the Pillman match at the end and they just gave Flair and Brad 2-3 more minutes of action.

All in all this was a pretty good syndicated episode of World Wide and I was surprised. I did this show for one match and I went away enjoying the whole card. It is definitely worth checking out if you ever get your hands on it. Well that does it for this episode of Television Rewind right here on CrazyMax. Coming up next is the one and only SummerSlam Spectacular 1991. That will be followed by one of my favorite WCW PPV’s but you will have to wait to find out what one that will be. I hope you tune into the next installments of the Event Center and Television Rewind. Until next time, have a good one and I will see you all again very soon.

Mike Paidousis… is an ass…

WWWF ALL-STAR WRESTLING 11-25-78

All-Star Wrestling is taped from the Fieldhouse in Hamburg, Pennsylvania.
Taping date is November 22, 1978.

“Living Legend” BRUNO SAMMARTINO joins Vince McMahon at the announcer’s table again this week for the action. And Bruno is looking rather zoned.

Gary Capetta makes his All-Star Wrestling Debut, replacing Joe McHugh on the “B” show. With the “Championship Wrestling” show moving from Philadelphia to Allentown, McHugh would continue with his ring announcing duties as part of that program.

Immediately, the opening portion of the show feels sped up with Capetta doing the introductions. I don’t know the actual time difference, but Capetta announcing the Athletic Commission, Doctor, Referees, etc.. feels twice as fast as when McHugh does it.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #1: SPECIAL DELIVERY JONES VS. TONY RUSSO

Referee is Dick Woehrle. SD hooks a headlock early, but Russo soon goes to the leg of Jones. SD surprises many with not one, but TWO grounded spinning head scissors to escape from Russo. Russo is short and stocky but he was quite the solid worker as he wrestled underneath in just about every territory imaginable. As Russo continues to work over Jones’s leg, Bruno and Vince spend a lot of the match putting over the fact that Sammartino is NOT retired and he’s working on a full time basis around the world. Bruno says we can expect to see him soon at an arena ‘near you’. Meanwhile, Russo is just relentless on the leg of Jones for the entire match. Jones hobbles to reverse an Irish whip and then delivers a SINGLE HEAD BUTT and the match is over, just like that after 5:29.

Winner is Special Delivery Jones

Notes: I expected more from this match. Russo looked very solid in the heel role, telling a story of working over SD’s leg but it never really went anywhere. Jones comes back with a simple head butt and pins Russo out of nowhere. They spent most of the match letting everyone know that BRUNO IS NOT RETIRED.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #2: MIKE PAIDOUSIS VS. MARK MASTERS

[spacer height=”20px”]Holy balls, referee here is Tony Altimore of Sicilians fame! Altimore and Lou Albano were once upon a time a tag team in the area. Paidousis is from a bygone era, even by 1978 standards. I’ve seen Paidousis footage go back to the beginning of the 1950’s, and he has to easily be in his mid-50’s by this point in his career… and he looks EVERY bit of it. This is the earliest footage I’ve seen of Masters, who you may be more familiar with under the ring names Rocky Jones and MIKE Masters. As you can see, Masters took good care of himself and looks RIPPED here. If this were the mid 1980s, Vinnie Jr. would have loved to scoop Masters up for that steroid body look.

Masters starts off with an armbar that he doesn’t seem to want to release. When Paidousis finally makes the ropes, Masters lays in some stiff sounding forearm shots and he hooks a rear chinlock. Bruno thinks Masters is green and needs to polish his moves. I concur. Bruno really had a way on commentary of basically shooting on guys without completely giving away that it’s a work. Masters works Paidousis pretty good, making some fluid moves from an armbar to a hammerlock. Masters tries a snapmare and Paidousis LEGIT blocks it. He’s having none of it. Masters keeps trying to mare Paidousis over, but Mike stands his ground and pulls back for an awkward situation.

It doesn’t get any better from there. The two men trade blows when Masters goes for a shoulder tackle. But Paidousis simply walks away and Masters winds up tackling the air, stumbling, and doing a forward roll into the ropes to look like a complete ass. Paidousis isn’t cooperating for a shit. I guess it’s the grizzled vet not wanting the young rookie to get over on him, but it’s ruining the match. AND IT CONTINUES… Paidousis looks for a test of strength, but Masters dropkicks his way out of it. Paidousis barely sells it, taking a step back but not bumping. What a dick!

Mike gets into a shooting position as he keeps back and swats away Masters attempt at a headlock. Paidousis then grabs a hammerlock takeover in a very unsafe way. Masters has to legit kick his way to the ropes for the break. Masters wrings the arm of Paidousis and tries to straddle it, but Mike no sells it and rolls out of the hold. What a f**king ass hat. Paidousis blocks another offensive attempt by Masters and hooks a shoot waistlock, into a shoot double leg takedown from behind, into a shoot ride on top of Masters to maintain real control and not let the guy do anything.

Masters eventually sits his way out and grabs another arm wringer on Mike. Masters straddles the arm of Paidousis again, and this time Mike clasps his hands to prevent Masters from doing anything. It looks like Paidousis is trying to set Masters up for a shoot back suplex, but Mark gets wise and spins around into a front facelock.

It’s clear at this point Paidousis has been around quite long enough to know how to shoot in the ring as needed. It also looks like it’s becoming clear to Paidousis that Masters may be green but he’s not a complete idiot. Masters continues to go along with Paidousis’ horse shit, but he’s also letting Mike know that he’s not going to be made a fool of. Paidousis sees that Masters knows JUST ENOUGH to cause some issues so he quickly puts an end to this. Paidousis escapes the headlock and sends Masters into the rope for a backdrop. Paidousis drops a stiff looking knee to the chest of Masters and then covers him in a precarious position to prevent any kicking out. Match went 5:38.

As soon as the ref counts three, Masters jumps up and looks a bit pissed off. Clearly something didn’t go right…. To say the least.

While he still looks capable in the ring, I think it’s safe to say Paidousis is winding down his career here. 5:38

Winner is Mike Paidousis

Notes: Boy…. That was…. umm…. Interesting… To say the least. If you know what you’re watching it’s certainly intriguing to see what a 25 plus year veteran could do versus a rookie. Paidousis was clearly having none of it as the full of vigor Masters was trying to get some offense in. It made for an awkward match as Paidousis did everything from block holds, to simply walking away or no selling a dropkick. And then there was the abrupt ending. Bruno and Vince try their best to explain the match. I was entertained, but for all the wrong reasons.[spacer height=”20px”]

RINGSIDE INTERVIEW WITH “HIGH CHIEF” PETER MAIVIA & FREDDIE BLASSIE

Blassie likes getting the best of the fans. Blassie stands for CLASS. Maivia flashes Blassie’s “10 karat” diamond ring. Vince is even impressed. Blassie says he buys rings like others buys suits. He has 5 Lincoln Continentals, so when one is getting washed he can drive another one. Blassie calls himself the LIBERACE of wrestling. I would have thought that would be Pat Patterson.

Maivia takes over the interview. He’s making more money with Blassie than he ever made before. Maivia says he’s the greatest wrestler produced from the islands.

Blassie said Maivia didn’t throw Backlund aside… He KICKED him aside… Blassie goes on the Skaaland is cheap routine again, which has nothing to do with this, so I assume this is a fact. Blassie says Maivia is the next Heavyweight Champion. Vince claims all of the top baby faces want a shot at Maivia, but Blassie says nobody ever signs up to wrestle the High Chief. Blassie closes the promo by making fun of Jay Strongbow’s nose.[spacer height=”20px”]

And now, if you needed to be reminded again that Bruno Sammartino IS NOT RETIRED, we’re randomly treated to a trip back in time to MSG, June 16, 1975. It’s a match featuring Bruno Sammartino (then champion) vs. Waldo Von Erich, the evil German. Before the match, Bruno & Vince discuss the match. Bruno claims to have had a broken arm going into the match but refused to back out of the match due to the fans expecting to see him defend his championship. What a guy!

MATCH #3: (THEN) WWWF HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION BRUNO SAMMARTINO VS. WALDO VON ERICH

Bruno is with Skaaland. Waldo has Blassie with him. Waldo goes right after the arm of Bruno before the bell even sounds, smashing him with the “European Championship” belt. Blassie passes Von Erich a foreign object and he begins to jab it into the broken arm of Bruno. What a HEEL! Sammartino begins to fight back, turnbuckle smashes, kicks, punches, STOMPS. The crowd comes unglued with every stomp. Amazing crowds back then. Waldo kicks Bruno in the bad arm to take back over. Von Erich ducks for a backdrop but Bruno stops short and plants him with a knee to the head… Well he pretty much misses, but Waldo sells it anyway. The phantom knee appears to knock out Von Erich as Bruno covers and gets the win in only 2:12. (The ring announcer claims 4:12, but that’s just not the case)

After the match a pissed off Bruno goes to work on Von Erich, he stomps the shit out of Waldo’s arm. The blood thirsty crowd pops for every stomp.

Notes: As you can tell, not much by way of a match, but every time I hear an old Garden crowd pop for Bruno it puts goose bumps on the back of my neck. The crowd response for Bruno was always simply AMAZING. #RIPBruno

After the footage finishes, we go back to modern day 1978 where Bruno and Vince continue to discuss the match. Bruno explains the reason for his hate for Von Erich. Waldo had busted him up with a chair and called him some apparently nasty Italian slurs and promised to send Bruno back to Italy in a casket. DAMN. Didn’t have to be all that serious. What a heel, promising murder and using racial slurs. He sure took that Nazi gimmick serious.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #4: “THE KING OF WRESTLING” ERNIE LADD (w/THE GRAND WIZARD) VS. STAN LAVDAS

Again, with Ladd technically not working full time in the territory, he’s still making his rounds at MSG so we get another taped match from the summer. This match was taped August 29th, 1978 and originally aired September 16th as part of the “Championship Wrestling” program. Referee is Dick Woehrle, Capetta is the announcer. Lavdas (proper spelling) worked a bunch for the WWWF as a curtain jerker and enhancement talent during the mid 1970s. I’d tell you to look him up in results on a certain site, but they’re too lazy to be bothered with checking their copy and paste jobs, and thus you’ll find his name spelled FOUR DIFFERENT WAYS in the SAME YEAR of results. #NoExcuse

Ladd dominates Lavdas here, smashing him into the turnbuckle, executing a real hiptoss, and working him over against the ropes. Ladd with a big boot that Lavdas sells even though it misses. Vince explains it away, saying that Lavdas tries to back away from the move but still got hit. Ladd hits his big legdrop, but he pulls Lavdas up at the 2 count. Ernie picks Lavdas up before driving his taped thumb into the throat of Stan for the win in 3:13.

Winner is Ernie Ladd

Notes: Ladd keeps it basic, doing as little as possible and keeping all of his matches at around 3:00. But he still sold tickets, so he could get away with things like that. I know Ladd and Graham both worked the taped thumb gimmick at times, but it’s odd to see them both in the territory at the same time, with the same manager, using the same gimmick.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #5: DINO BRAVO VS. “CRAZY” LUKE GRAHAM (w/THE GRAND WIZARD)

It’s feature match time and as usual it seems to feature Crazy Luke. Tony Altimore is your referee. Bravo works a headlock early on while Luke tries some dirty tricks to break free. From hair pulling to a dirty rope break, Graham tries his best to take control. Dino hooks a nice spinning toe hold and another leglock, but both times Luke makes it to the ropes to escape.

Dino works an armbar on Graham. Luke tries to escape, but he telegraphs a backdrop and Dino winds up right back on top of him. Graham returns to his friend, the ropes, for another break. Graham finally gets Bravo into a headlock and he drives the taped thumb into Dino’s throat like 10 FRICKIN TIMES. Cummon Altimore! Graham continues to hammer on Dino in the corner. Luke won’t stop the onslaught or listen to referee Altimore’s plead for a break. Altimore calls for the bell and he disqualifies Graham in 7:05.

Immediately after the bell sounds Bravo goes NUTS on Graham. Dino begins nailing the shit out of Graham, sending him to the floor where they continue to brawl. Diuo is on fire as he continues to beat the piss out of Luke as they continue to fight all around the floor.

Winner is Dino Bravo by disqualification

Notes: I’ll say this much for Graham. He may not have been putting on clinics, but he sure went out and wrestled every week. This was 7 minutes of feeling out. Back then you had to know how to stall for 10 minutes to stretch out the matches on the house shows. Luke Graham had that art down pat. The only good part of this match was Dino Bravo firing up after the match.

Vince starts to announce Graham vs. WWWF Champion Bob Backlund for next week, but we can’t hear it because of the generic music being played over the original music.[spacer height=”20px”]

Closing Thoughts: This show felt slapped together. An Ernie Ladd match taped a few months back, a Bruno Sammartino matches taped 3 YEARS back, an SD Jones SQUASH, Mike Paidousis goes over??? This was just a really oddly thrown together episode. It definitely felt like they just stretched this out with whatever they could piece together. Even the Maivia & Blassie promo was nowhere near as good as the previous one. I did find the Paidousis/Masters match to be interesting given the circumstances, but everything else left a lot to be desired. Though it’s always cool to see Bruno in the Garden.

Stay tuned to the next edition of the Retro Rasslin’ Review as Mike Paidousis gets his comeuppance![spacer height=”20px”]

WWWF All-Star Wrestling Review 11-18-78

In case you didn’t know, Ernie Ladd Promos Rule!!!

WWWF ALL-STAR WRESTLING 11-18-78

All-Star Wrestling is taped from the Fieldhouse in Hamburg, Pennsylvania.
Taping date is November 1, 1978.

This show is incomplete and appears to be missing two segments.

“Living Legend” BRUNO SAMMARTINO joins Vince McMahon yet again at the announcer’s table this week for the action.

Joe McHugh does the intro routine and we’re ready to go.

MATCH #1: LARRY ZBYSZKO VS. BOB COLTER

[spacer height=”20px”]Referee is Dick Woehrle. I don’t know a whole lot about Colter, other than he was pretty big and worked under a mask in a group called the Black Avengers in Angelo Poffo’s ICW. I also got this tidbit from the ICW Poffo Wrestling fan website. This bit of info comes from the late Steve Cooper, who we will also see on this episode. Cooper mentioned about Colter “Bob Colter was a Vietnam Veteran, a Green Beret, and a former football player at ole Miss”. Here’s a pic of Colter in the Black Avenger costume.

He is quite the big boy and moves around pretty well, though sometimes he seems a little clumsy. Zbyszko is very crisp and deliberate, landing a nice fireman’s takeover into an armbar. Some miscommunication sees Larry have to force Colter into a head scissors. Colter with a HEAD STAND and he flips his way out of the hold. Bruno and Vince are impressed with Colter’s size, but Larry is the one dominating the match. Colter actually takes over and grabs a headlock on Larry. Zbyszko counters into a back suplex and a bridge that gets him a 2 count. Colter gets up and biels Larry out of the corner, but Zbyszko gets back on top and ties big Bob up.

Colter AGAIN gets to make a comeback. A hiptoss on Larry and Bob works Zbyszko over in the corner. By this point Bruno and Vince start pointing out Colter’s flaws. Bruno craps on Colter’s inability to follow up on moves and points out that he isn’t using his size and strength. Larry with a hiptoss which Colter takes very sloppy, almost dragging Zbyszko down with him. Larry finishes it off with his rolling crucifix for the win in 4:39.

Winner is Larry Z.

Notes: Colter was clearly green as he seemed to have bits of ability but could be clumsy or off balance at times when executing or taking moves here. Sloppy in parts but still a fun squash with Larry letting the bigger Colter get some shots in.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #2: CRUSHER BLACKWELL (w/THE GRAND WIZARD) VS. STEVE COOPER & FIREBALL ROBINSON

I touched on both Cooper and Fireball’s wrestling background in the last All-Star Review from 11-11-1978. This is a handicap match if you couldn’t tell. Blackwell crushes both men in the corner together, and then rushes in and smashes Cooper with a big Avalanche splash in the corner. Crusher tosses Fireball outside for a nasty bump and then works over Cooper in the ring. With both men back inside Blackwell continues to destroy both opponents. Nothing fancy from Crusher this week as he just hammers both guys all around the ring.

Blackwell with a nice looking one armed bodyslam on Fireball. Powerslam drives Cooper into the mat. Crusher then slams Robinson next the Cooper. Blackwell drops a big leg onto both guys, sort of, and gets the easy win.

Winner is Crusher Blackwell

Notes: A basic squash. Blackwell looked good but did less in the way of impressive moves here as he just mauled both guys for most of the match. I did like the corner splash and the one handed slam. Blackwell continues to be an asset as a heel here. It’s a shame that he got cold feet in 1984 and quit the WWF before he even started. [spacer height=”20px”]

RINGSIDE INTERVIEW WITH CRUSHER BLACKWELL & THE GRAND WIZARD

Vince McMahon asks Wiz if he gets his jollies from Blackwell lifting him up and carrying him. WOW. Wiz plays along, then says 2 men weren’t enough for Blackwell, Crusher needs 3 or 4 men for a real workout. Blackwell says he’s sick of the lack of competition, he wants Backlund, he wants Bravo. Blackwell asks Vince to get in the ring. Now THAT I would have loved to seen.

Blackwell mentions he beat a top star in 9 seconds, Vince concurs but says he attacked the opponent from behind. They never mention who Blackwell is referring to, but they’re talking about Crusher destroying Tony Garea at the Spectrum back in October. Didn’t Bundy set that bogus 9 second record 7 years later?

Blackwell challenges ANYONE to get in the ring and bodyslam him. He will give $5,000 to ANYONE that can slam him! Wizard even challenges Bruno Sammartino to come and try and slam Blackwell. Crusher jumps in the ring and looks for challengers, but nobody responds before we go to commercial.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #3: “THE KING OF WRESTLING” ERNIE LADD (w/THE GRAND WIZARD) VS. FRED MARZINO

This match was originally taped back on August 29th and aired on the September 9th episode of Championship Wrestling from the Philadelphia Arena. Ring announcer is Gary Capetta here. Reason for this is Ladd wasn’t in the territory full time at this point but he was still coming in to work the big MSG cards and so they needed to keep his face fresh on TV. This was during the period where Ladd was working the “King” gimmick. Ladd with a hammerlock takeover early on, which is impressive for anyone his size. Off topic: The Arena floor looks like it could use a new coat of paint… 20 years ago. Ladd pitches Marzino to the floor for the fun of it. Once back in the ring, Ladd slams Marzino with ease and then hits him with a pair of thumbs to the throat. UUuuuuu-maga. Ladd plants the BIG BOOT and the legdrop finishes it in 3:00.

Winner is the Big Cat

Notes: Short and sweet, nothing to write about.

RINGSIDE INTERVIEW WITH ERNIE LADD & THE GRAND WIZARD

Ladd says the Wiz has brought him in to go after the World Champion Bob Backlund. Ladd says he hears that Backlund is soft and he’s coming to “do the job”. Ladd plans to be the next WWF World Champion. If only…

I love Ladd’s promos with Vince, he rides Vince so hard it’s hilarious. “A-YACK YACK YACK”. This is a quick promo and this is where the WWE Network version of the show ends.

As I mentioned at the start of this episode, it’s incomplete and missing the final two segments of the show.

Missing from this episode are…

* Ivan Koloff over Frankie Williams (4:58)

* And yet another TV 6-man tag with Jay Strongbow, Dino Bravo & Dominic DeNucci over Moose Monroe, Baron Mikel Scicluna, and Crazy Luke Graham (Bravo pins Monroe, 11:20)

Closing Thoughts: Out of all of the All-Star episodes I have reviewed thus far, this is only the second episode that is missing a segment or two. I’m sure the Koloff match was what we’d expect, but it’s always a bummer to miss out on a feature match like the 6-man tag, even if it likely wasn’t very good. And judging by the heel team alone, it was probably a rough 11 minutes to sit through, but still.

Based on what we DID see, everything accomplished what it needed to. Blackwell continues to dominate and has stepped it up with the proposed $5,000 Bodyslam challenge. Ladd does little in the ring, but his promos are always a thing of beauty… and hilarity. I’m also a big wrestling historian buff so I mark out for video footage of the more obscure wrestlers who competed in years gone by, so I was pleased to get this rare look at Bob Colter. With two segments missing, this episode only runs about 26 minutes or so.

On the next edition of the Retro Rasslin’ Review it’s EVIL Peter Maivia, Mike Paidousis proves to be an ass, and SD Jones gets a win… Seriously!

MATCH #1: TONY GAREA VS. “CRAZY” LUKE GRAHAM (w/THE GRAND WIZARD)

Referee is Mario Savoldi. I wouldn’t expect a classic here. Garea starts off with the basics, a top wrist lock and a waistlock, before Graham makes it to the ropes for a break. Crazy Luke takes over and hooks on a sloppy Cobra Clutch and holds it for over a minute before Graham turns it into a choke and has to break. More choking from Graham. Garea begins fighting back and grabs a side headlock which he holds…. and holds… and holds. Not sure what that is supposed to accomplish. Finally, Luke goes into his tights for a foreign object and loads his taped thumb. Graham jabs it into the throat of Garea to break the headlock. Graham takes over with chokes, chokes, and chokes. Garea starts punching back and knocks Graham out of the ring to the floor. Tony follows him out where the two men trade punches until the referee claims he has counted both men out at 7:26.

They continue to fight, apparently have sex on the apron, and then roll into the ring where Garea finally fights off Crazy Luke and sends him packing…. Finally.

Official result is a DOUBLE COUNT OUT

Notes: Well, this was pretty much 7 minutes of nothing. BUT on the positive end it wasn’t the worst I’ve seen from either of them. They didn’t do much, but what they did do wasn’t the worst of their individual bodies of work. Still, this was not good, as you can probably imagine.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #2: “HIGH CHIEF” PETER MAIVIA (w/FRED BLASSIE) VS. STEVE COOPER

Referee is Dick Woehrle. For those who recognize the name Steve Cooper, he worked a bit in Detroit for the Sheik around this time and in the WWA for Dick the Bruiser. Cooper is probably best known as the manager of one Randy “Macho Man” Savage in the ICW during the very early 1980s. Maivia has just recently turned heel on both Bob Backlund and Chief Jay Strongbow. Maivia is the latest of fan favorites to turn on the baby face World Champion. Blassie seems to have the market cornered on getting guys to turn heel on the champ. Arion, Rivera, now Maivia.

Maivia just hammers on Cooper, not really letting him get to a standing position. Maivia pounds on Cooper up against the ropes and Steve winds up tied in the ropes. On commentary Bruno comments that he can’t believe the new aggressiveness of the High Chief. Cooper finally gets a chance to fight back, throwing a few punches. Maivia no sells and floors Cooper once more. Maivia even distracts Woehrle so Blassie can sneak in a cheap shot with his cane. Maivia scoops Cooper up in a fireman’s carry and drops him throat first across the top rope for the pin in 3:45.

Following the match Maivia drives Cooper down into a gut buster just for the fun of it. He’s a HEEL (in my best Jim Cornette impersonation)!

Winner is The High Chief

Notes: Match lacked any real offense and offered no real entertainment for me. It did however serve it’s sole purpose. That being – Maivia got his face on TV, got himself over, he dominated, he cheated, he’s proved himself a threat to the title. Nothing of a match, but the segment did what it was intended to do.[spacer height=”20px”]

RINGSIDE INTERVIEW WITH “HIGH CHIEF” PETER MAIVIA & FREDDIE BLASSIE

Blassie claims Maivia doesn’t have much of an education so that’s why Skaaland and Bob Backlund used Peter Maivia. Blassie only has “foreign wrestlers”. Failing to realize Samoa is part of America. Blassie helped Maivia see the light. High Chief claims Backlund called him personally to ask him for help. Maivia claims he helped Backlund remain World Champion. Maivia says Backlund was using Maivia as a stepping stone and was keeping Maivia as an ally because he was afraid to wrestle the High Chief. Maivia says Backlund and Skaaland will never double cross him again.

Vince claims that Backlund was taught how to wrestle by Maivia in the amateurs. WTF? I guess whatever sells the story. Anyway, Backlund wanted to repay Maivia for his help by being his tag team partner.

Blassie claims every time Backlund and Maivia teamed up that Peter did all the work and Backlund came in to make the pin. Blassie says Arnold Skaaland stole the money. We run out of time on the promo.

Not a bad promo this week. They actually had a story to tell in the interview, so it wasn’t the typical ranting and raving about nothing in particular. It covered what it needed and progressed the storyline from the heels point of view.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #3: “RUSSIAN BEAR” IVAN KOLOFF (w/LOU ALBANO) VS. FIREBALL ROBINSON

Albano may be rocking his very best outfit here. Fireball (Henry) Robinson worked the Georgia “outlaw” promotions during the 1970s and ran a short lived promotion in the Northeast Ohio area in the early 1980s. He has since passed away. Koloff dominates the match, though Robinson tries to throw in a shot when he can.  Ivan works a rear chinlock before Fireball comes fighting back, landing some left handed shots and a headbutt. Robinson cranks a side headlock on the Russian Bear. Bruno isn’t buying the headlock is affecting Koloff. He’s right. Ivan scoops Fireball up and throws him across the ring to escape the hold. Soon after it’s Ivan with a flying kneedrop off the middle rope.

Koloff works over Robinson’s leg and lands a second flying kneedrop before applying a new hold, a Standing Figure Four. It’s actually a pretty sweet looking hold. Bruno is impressed with the new hold, as am I. Koloff gets the submission win in 4:36 and Fireball fizzles out.

Winner is The Russian Bear

Notes: Another typical heel squash. Was interesting to see Koloff drop his finisher from the middle rope rather than the top rope, then it all makes sense in the end. I really liked the standing Figure Four, and Koloff applied it in a very believable way. I honestly would have liked to seen Koloff use this more often, or for another wrestle to have adapted this hold.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #4: DINO BRAVO VS. B.B. COLEMAN

Billy Coleman is a pretty well known worker in the Ohio / Michigan / West Virginia / Pennsylvania region during the 1970s and 1980s. He works a wild style at times. A pretty good hand with decent size that didn’t make a bad heel on the Indy shows. He also did lots of job work for the WWF (as seen here). Bravo shows solid mat skills and he keeps Coleman on the mat early on. Coleman finally finds himself in control as he works over and chokes Dino against the ropes. Bravo has enough and blocks a right hand before driving Coleman face first into the mat. Dino delivers the big dropkick and the airplane spin ends it in 5:18.

Winner is Dino Bravo

Notes: A pretty quick by-the-numbers baby face squash. Dino showed some nice moves on the mat. Match honestly felt shorter than it was. Just a squash.[spacer height=”20px”]

MATCH #5: WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE YUKON LUMBERJACKS (w/ALBANO) VS. LARRY ZBYSZKO & SPECIAL DELIVERY JONES

Alas, Larry has lost his mustache and it doesn’t appear it is coming back. So long to the polish caterpillar.

This is non-title I’d imagine. Zbyszko and Lumberjack Eric (Scott Irwin) will start. Eric eventually gets a single leg on Zbyszko and takes Larry down. The Lumberjacks work over Zbyszko’s leg for a bit before Jones gets a tag. SD comes in and unloads on Lumberjack Pierre, but Pierre soon cuts him off and the Lumberjacks now work over Jones.

SD gets a tag back to Zbyszko, and the two faces take turns making quick tags, grinding a headlock on Pierre. Jones allows Eric to tag in, but SD reverses an Irish whip and Eric takes a flying chest bump into the turnbuckles. Nice. Eric lands near the heel corner and he tags back to Pierre.

Jones whips Pierre into the corner next. SD charges in but Pierre moves and Jones crashes into the buckle. Pierre quickly covers and gets the pin in 5:14.

Winners are The Lumberjacks

Notes: Well that was a shitty finish. This was really a nothing match. I generally enjoy Zbyszko’s work from this period, and I really was impressed by the Lumberjacks (especially Scott Irwin) in some of their earlier matches in 1978, but this match really didn’t do anybody any favors. Zbyszko didn’t really get positioned to do much of anything, the Lumberjacks were losing their luster though they were still solid heels and bumpers, and SD was SD. The Lumberjacks would go on to lose the Tag Team Titles to Zbyszko and Garea at the next set of Championship Wrestling tapings. So maybe Larry was just biding his time and feeling out the Lumberjacks. Perhaps Larry was using this match to take notes. First note, DO NOT USE SD JONES AS YOUR PARTNER. Hell, Jones once jobbed to a COIN FLIP against Tony Atlas for shits sake. [spacer height=”20px”]

Closing Thoughts: The shows feel a little repetitive lately. Mostly the same few guys getting the rub. It was a mixed bag as we go from someone like Ivan Koloff who makes even the simplest squash enjoyable, to a “feature match” with Garea vs. Luke Graham which was less than stellar. While not a good wrestling match, Maivia working to get heel heat here was a no-brainer in booking 101. He went in there and got himself over as a heel, and again while not the greatest promo, his promo served a purpose which made it more interesting and developed the Backlund vs. Maivia matches that would main event for the next couple of months.

As we start to close in on the end of 1978 things are slowly starting to change. We’ll see a lot of these names disappear with a new roster of talent coming in. Business is picking up here on the Retro Rasslin’ Review!
