THE “OH MY GOD!” ECW Video Review!

Fancam 1996-04-12 from the Briarcliff Fieldhouse in Glenolden, PA

JT Smith vs. El Puerto Ricano ref Pee Wee Moore

Smith starts off with a take down and some ground work that ends in a chin lock. Smith backs off and complains the El Puerto Ricano is to greasy. Ricano back flips out off a back drop attempt and hits a drop kick. Some basic back and forth countering and Smith ends up on the floor after being hit with a drop kick. Ricano with a suicide dive and the crowd gets on Smith with “JT sucks” chant. Smith back in and we get an “asshole” chant. Back in the ring and Smith in control hits a handspring of the ropes into a splash for a 2 count. Somersault from the apron onto Ricano for another 2. Ricano hits a swinging DDT from the second rope for a 2. Crowd being very rude to Smith. Ricano in the corner and he head scissors Smith and hits a really nice looking frankenstiener followed by a top rope dropkick. He goes for another one but misses. Smith picks him up for a suplex with out hooking the arm over his neck and flips Ricano into a sitout power bomb. Very nice looking move for the win at the 6.51 mark.

Taz (w/Bill Alfonso) vs. Damien Stone ref John Finnegan

Stone would soon become Little Guido. God that whistle is so annoying. Some arm work start that ends in an arm bar, Stone to the ropes for the break. Clothesline by Taz. T-bone Tazplex followed by stomps. Stone with a quick burst of offense drop kick, stomps, hip toss, misses a somersault off the top rope. Taz dumps him on the top of his head with a German Tazplex and follows with the Tazmission for the win in 3.01. Taz gets on the mic but it’s always very hard to understand promos on these fancams.

Buh Buh Ray Dudley (w/Sign Guy, Chubby & Big Dick Dudley) vs. TV Champion 2 Cold Scorpio ref Jim Molineaux

Mic work by both men to start and again I can’t understand what’s being said. Scorpio bails right away and grabs the mic again. The only words I can hear are “dance off mutha fucka” and I get really excited! Scorpios music hits and they each take 3 turns dancing and it’s fucking fantastic. Scorpio ends the dance party by attacking Buh Buh while he break dances much to my dismay. As soon as Buh Buh gets the upper hand Scorp bails out to slow him down. Brawling and choking from Scorpio in the early stages of the match. He bails again when Buh Buh hits a shoulder block. Back in and more kicks and punches by Scorpio. Nine minutes into the match counting the dance off and not one move. Flying clothesline and a top rope dropkick sends Buh Buh to the floor and Scorpio flies over the top with a crossbody. Whip to the guardrail Scorpio follows it in but gets backdropped into the crowd and irish whipped into a Big Dick clothesline. Sidewalk slam gets a 2 for Buh Buh but he misses a 2nd rope splash. Superkick and moonsault by Scorpio gets him a 2 count. Buh Buh Bomb for 2 Scorpio gets up and hits a superkick and 2nd rope knee drop. He goes up top for a second moonsault which gets him the victory.

“Lionheart” Chris Jericho vs. Damien 666 ref Pee Wee Moore

Jericho hits a back drop early on hits the ropes and lands a running stomp. Submission attempt by Jericho. Damien lands a bunch of kicks to Jericho’s face and the fans start a “Muta” chant at Damien. Two foreign guys with face paint sure they must be the same person. Damien with a head scissor that sends Jericho to the floor and he follows that up with a suicide dive. Back in the ring Damien with a chair and he channels Sabu and leg drops Jericho with it and gets a 2 count. Damien goes up top and we get our first good look at his face paint and its kinda creepy. Jericho cuts him off and they are both standing on the top rope. Jericho drop kicks Damien who falls all the way to the floor. OUCH! Well maybe not as he gets back up in about 1 second. Back on the apron and Jericho lunges at him and they both crash onto the time keepers table. Jericho suplexs Damien from the apron for a 2 count. Belly to back for a 2 count. Double underhook powerbomb for 2. Jericho shrieking at the ref each time to count faster. Top rope splash for 2. Another power bomb attempt by Jericho awkwardly reversed into a hurricanrana. Damien misses a moonsault and lands on a chair he had brought into the ring. Jericho drop kicks the chair into him for another 2 count. Jericho hits a dragon suplex and gets the win.

The Bad Crew vs. The Gangstas ref Jim Molineaux

Gangstas hit the ring and not surprisingly we have a brawl. Into the crowd we go after about 30 seconds. We hang with New Jack the whole time and get the usual punch, kick, chair repeat. After about 4 minutes New Jack actual gets in the ring. So we run down to the aisle where Mustafa is The Eliminators come out and attack him. New Jack comes out with a night stick to make the save. Kronus is fighting with someone in the crowd over a chair and I think he might kill the person. The Gangstas are down after a TON of chair shots. Bad Crew wins by countout. Really? Gangstas get taken out on stretcher

– We get a crowd shot and there’s a kid no more then ten screaming “fuck you” at the camera and flipping it off. Savage.

World Champion Raven (w/Kimona Wanaleya, Brian Lee, “Dancin” Stevie Richards & The Blue Meanie) vs. Axl Rotten ref John Finnegan

Raven tells Kimona to leave and slaps her when she doesn’t. Brian Lee takes her to the back. Axl realizing he his outnumbered leaves and comes back with Hack Meyers. Brawling to start Axl gets a 2 count after a clothesline. Sunset flip and small package both get 2 for Axl. Raven tossed to the floor and takes a chair across the back. Raven hits the guardrail a few times. Back in the ring Axl works over Raven’s injured foot and locks in a figure four. Meanie in the ring but Meyers cuts him off. Superkick by Stevie as the ref is distracted. DDT at 6.33 and Raven retains the title.

– “The Franchise” Shane Douglas comes down and talks shit about Shawn Michaels. He issues an open challenge to anyone in the looker room. Out come Raven, The Blue Meanie, “Dancin” Steve Richards and “Primetime” Brian Lee. They hit the ring and attack Douglas. After a few minutes Sandman hits the ring and tells Raven and his guys to get out of the ring. Douglas is tied up in the ropes and the Sandman mocks him. Sandman canes referee Jim Molineaux. Douglas kicks him low and gets himself free and we get…

“The Franchise” Shane Douglas vs. The Sandman ref Jim Molineaux

Headbutts and stomps to Sandman’s groin and Douglas crotches him on the bottom rope. An inverted atomic drop as Douglas really targets the man-bag of Sandman early on. Outside the ring some chairs to the head of Sandman. Douglas crotches him on a chair and punches him right in the nuts. Douglas drags Sandman under the ring so he can pull him into the ring post. Well if the alcohol hadn’t already killed all his sperm. Sandman fights back and throws Douglas into the crowd then drops and elbow. Sandman throws part of the guardrail into the ring and Irish whips Douglas into it. Suplex onto the rail and Douglas is rolling on the ground in pain. Sandman picks up the rail but Douglas drop kicks him in the back. Sandman hits the turnbuckle but falls backwards hitting Douglas. Sandman now with the cane but Douglas hits a low blow. He turns his back on Sandman to pose and takes the cane between the legs. Both men are down and Raven comes back out. Cross pose over Sandman and crotch shot for him. Lee, Richards, and Meanie hit the ring now and Shane just leaves. Sandman gets a big boot and chair to the head from Lee. After a minute of Sandman being beat down Shane returns with a cane of his own to chase off the Nest. Shane gets the mic and tells us that he hates Sandman and Tommy Dreamer but not as much as he hates Raven. So we’ll call this one a no contest.

Billy Black vs. Sabu ref John Finnegan

Black with the early advantage and hits a crossbody off the top rope to the floor. Sabu with a spin kick back in the ring followed by a spring board leg lariat. Air Sabu for a 2 count. Corner whip reversed by Black and he follows with a clothesline. Sabu reverses a suplex but takes a big boot as he tries to follow it up. Sabu flips out of a back drop hits a back kick and Black stumbles to the floor. Sabu from the ring runs up a chair springboards off the ropes and dives at into the crowd at Black and he pretty much misses. Back in the ring now and Black hits a German suplex for 2. Both man hit heads after and Irish whip and the ref starts the ten count. Back up and Sabu get a corner whip followed by a clothesline and flipping leg drop from the apron to the inside of the ring. Fans chanting for a table to be used. Springboard moonsault by Sabu for 2 and he misses a second flipping leg drop from the outside in. Bulldog by Black but he misses a top rope moonsault. Sabu sends Black to the floor and lays him on a table. Sabu flips out of the ring and hits Black with a senton the table doesn’t break and Sabu actually bounces back up into the air after hitting Black. Air Sabu misses back in the ring and Black hits a dropkick. Sabu now gets Black on the top rope runs up a chair and they botch a frankenstiener as Black lands on Sabu. Sabu grabs a chair leg drops it onto Black and gets the 3 count in 11.57.

After the match Sabu throws himself through the table in “celebration” of his victory!?!?

– Stevie Richards, Blue Meanie and Brian Lee hit the ring again. Stevie gets on the mic and asks for “The Godfather of Professional Wrestling” Damien Kane to come out. Kane comes out with Lady Alexandra and the Headhunters. From what I’m able to hear it seems the Headhunters will be replacing Stevie and Meanie in tonight’s main event. The Pitbulls music hits and we get

“Primetime” Brian Lee (w/”Dancin” Stevie Richards & The Blue Meanie) and The Headhunters (w/”The Godfather of Professional Wrestling” Damien Kane & Lady Alexandra) vs. The Pitbulls & Tommy Dreamer (w/Beulah) ref Jim Molineaux

Dreamer and the Pitbulls hit the ring together and a wild brawl breaks out. Beulah and Lady Alexandra are immediately on the ground together. Dreamer and Lee are hooked up and the two tag teams separate. Will follow Dreamer and Lee all over the building and even to the outside. Pitbull 2 gets slammed onto a table and follows up by slamming on of the Headhunters onto a table himself. The table doesn’t break so he tries to jump off another table with a splash but slips and falls. After a third attempt they finally break it and Pitbull 2 gets a 2 count. The fight continues for about 7 more minutes until Dreamer goes for a pile driver on Lee but gets hit with a chair by Meanie for 2. Raven hits the ring but Tommy gets the better of him. Dreamer goes for a DDT on Raven but Lee comes in with a big boot for the win. After the match Meanie gets trapped in the ring and gets superbombed to send the fans home happy.

My thoughts on the show

Random thing I thought of while typing this up…should names to all wrestling moves be capitalized? Feel free to help me with my question in the comments section.

House shows are always a pretty tough thing to review. Nothing of importance usually happens and of course when it comes to mic time it’s impossible to hear anything. That being said I mildly enjoyed this show. The few things I felt worth seeing would be the dance off in the Scorpio Buh Buh match. If you couldn’t tell from my review I loved it. The Douglas/Sandman fight was interested as I have never seen someone work a body part quite like Douglas did when he pick Sandman’s testicles. This was clearly playing off of how TV ended last time. The main event was a fun brawl too. The rest of the show was nothing at all special. As I said mildly recommended but if you don’t already have it don’t go out of your way to see this show.

MMA News: Machine Injured? Jacare Talks Title Picture, UFN Highlights, and more

0

– Last night at UFC Fight Night 36, Lyoto Machida out-fought Gegard Mouasasi over five rounds to earn a unanimous decision win and a Fight of the Night bonus. During the Fox Sports post-fight show, Machida revealed that he won his second straight fight since dropping to middleweight with an injured foot.
“I don’t know what happened. I did some kicking and he defended with his knee. I don’t know if I broke my foot,” he said. “I didn’t think about my foot during the fight, I just tried to keep my focus on the fight. He’s a tough opponent. But he kept his hand down. I saw I could kick his head, leg and body. I had confidence in my kicks.”

While the win makes Machida a frontrunner for a middleweight title shot, the UFC have yet to commit and for now, Machida is fine with that.

“I don’t know. Dana White is the boss and can decide everything. I think I deserve the title shot,” said Machida. “We’ll see.”

Whether or not he has to wait for a crack at the belt, it doesn’t sound like Machida will be hopping back up to his old home at light heavyweight in the meantime.

“Now I’ve found my weight,” he said. “There are a lot of big guys at 205. Now I’m a big guy. I can fight everybody with my technique, strength and power.”

Dana White has said that Machida’s exact spot in the title picture will be determined by the outcome of the UFC 173 title fight between champ Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort.

– In other middleweight action last night, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza shut down Francis Carmont for a unanimous decision victory and his own place in line for a title shot. Jacare spoke about the fight on the Fox Sports post-fight show.

“I’m very happy. I knew he was a tough fighter,” said Jacare. “He was able to hold the submissions off. I really wanted to go for the submission and it was a tough fight.”

Like Machida, Jacare feels that he deserves a shot at the belt, but is fine jumping back into the fray if he doesn’t get the call.

“I deserve one, but if the UFC doesn’t think so, and the UFC wants to give me another fight, I’ll fight anyone,” he said.

The win over Carmont puts Jacare at six straight wins.

– Lyoto Machida, Gegard Mousasi, Charles Olivera and Erick Silva all earned $50,000 bonuses for their efforts last night.

Machida and Mousasi won Fight of the Night for their five round tilt. Oliveira earned one of the new Performance of the Night bonuses for his submission of Andy Ogle and Silva earned the second for his TKO over Takenori Sato.

– The UFC revealed last night that UFC Fight Night 36 drew a reported attendance of 7,511; gate figures were not reported.

The event took place at the Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Marty Jannetty Goes on Tirade; Challenges former WWE Star

0

– Marty Jannetty has been calling out former WWE and TNA star Elijah “The Pope” Burke. Burke had been ripping Jannetty for feeling that he stiffed Balls Mahoney with a chair shot during a match last year. Jannetty issued the following response on Facebook to a video that Burke posted on the internet late last year:

“If you didnt know, know you gonna know..for some reason Balls Mahoney is so loved in some parts of Europe that to this day I still catch s–t over him throwing up in our match here in Jersey and it blamed on me hitting him too hard with the chair whenb truth was, he couldnt keep up with the pace I set..but Pope, bruh..you bettta ask somebody what you dont wanna know!!you talked s–t last year..I let it go..but you gonna keep s–t up?..bruh, you talk about doing the fight for free, Ill pay your way here..now what bastard?

“My phone aint rang not one time Mr Black All Star Pope…where ya at nerra?? I dont know what the case with you and me, you trying to be more white than me black,,lets meet in the middle an say hey diddle diddle I kicked more sand in your face!!

“I know yo azz aint booked somewhere..thats what Im trying to do for you now beeeeeeotch!!..no reaaly, on real tip call a brotha, Im still gonna whoop yo azz though..you already know , as Snoop Dogg..wait, Snoop Lion says, it aint personal, its BUSSINESS!! Sheeeeeit!”

Another Rumored Match for Elimination Chamber PPV

0

Although it should be common knowledge by recent booking, it’s likely that a WWE Tag Title match with the New Age Outlaws defending against the Usos will round out the PPV. A Divas Title match between AJ Lee & Naomi was originally planned, but due to the recent eye injury suffered by Naomi there’s very little possibility of that happening.

Also expect a match to be announced for the preshow Kickoff this week.

The WWF Prime Time Wrestling Review 2/11/88

0

Back with another episode of Prime Time Wrestling. I’d like to thank Bjack and the rest of the Crazymax crew for hooking me up with the second half of this episode as my original copy had some issues. I also want to thank you guys for the nice advertising banner in the slide scroller, it looks great, and I can always use the advertising. 😉

I’m posting a couple of days early, but I’ve got some things going on mid-week and I wanted to make sure I got this out in time. I believe in the whole promptness thing, and when I take on a project I don’t believe in half assing it. If I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it right, dammit!

Last I left you, we were heading in to the big 2/5/88 Main Event special on NBC. Plenty has happened since then, including Hulk Hogan losing the WWF World Heavyweight Title to Andre the Giant, and not without a load of controversy. Twin Referees? The Giant then kept his promise and passed off the World Title to “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase for an undisclosed amount of money. Business is starting to pick up as we begin the road to WrestleMania.

Prime Time Wrestling 2/11/88

– Gorilla Monsoon returns after a week off. It’s nice to have Monsoon & Bobby back together, even if was only a week without their antics. It’s a special edition Thursday, and as we kick things off Gorilla Monsoon immediately explains that there’s a gag order in effect and there will be NO discussion of the February 5th “Main Event” special. Bobby is dying to discuss the Hulk vs. Andre match, but Monsoon explains that WWF President Jack Tunney has ordered against discussion until it is finished being investigated. Bobby says he has freedom of speech and he’s going to talk about what he wants. Monsoon asks Bobby if he wants to be fined $10,000, and Heenan has to rethink things. Bobby promises to let the cat out of the bag before the end of the show. Gorilla disagrees.

Match #1: Hillbilly Jim (w/Little Beaver) v. The One Man Gang (w/Slick): From Boston Garden, 8/15/87, your commentators are Alfred Hayes & “Luscious” Johnny Valiant. The bell rings prematurely and everyone is still in the ring. Beaver has fun with Slick before the match, taking his hat and giving the fans a laugh. The two big guys test each other out, with Jim hitting a big boot before the Gang takes over. Little Beaver can be funny, but in this match he’s pretty irritating. Beaver spends the majority of the match, on the apron, sitting on the top rope, or running around the ring. It’s like he’s trying to upstage the guys in the ring. There’s a time for it, and it’s not THE ENTIRE MATCH. Beaver sneaks in and slaps the Gang upside the head, and I guess that doesn’t constitute a DQ simply because he’s a midget. They go for a test of strength and Gang kicks Jim in the gut to get control. Beaver comes in during the test of strength and clocks the Gang in the butt three times with his shoe. I can’t tell if the Gang even sold it or not because Jim took control. I seriously think Beaver is just doing his own thing. Jim stomps the hands of the Gang, and we get an early scene of AKEEM. The Gang does the Akeem dance while he sells his fingers. OMG backs to the corner and has his butt bitten by Beaver. Gang distracts the ref while Slick chokes Jim. The Gang misses an Avalanche in the corner and Jim trips him down. Little Beaver hits a splash on OMG and the referee COUNTS? WTF is that about? Beaver gets tossed off the Gang and jumps on the referee for a comedy bump. Jim charges at Gang in the corner but takes a boot. OMG hits a series of short Avalanche splash in the corner on Hillbilly and drops an elbow for the corner, but Little Beaver rushes in and cracks OMG upside the head with his shoe. Again I ask, where’s the DQ? Interference is interference. Slick goes after Beaver, but Jim nails Slick on the floor. OMG goes outside and attacks Hillbilly, rolling him back in the ring at the count of 9. The Gang doesn’t beat the count, and Jim wins the match by count out in 12:46. Immediately after the match Beaver hits OMG with a broom. Gang lays out Hillbilly, and then THE GANG SPLASHES LITTLE BEAVER! Flipping Awesome. That’ll teach him. Not a whole lot too this match, but I was expecting a lot worse. I’ll still bump this thing up to 3/4* just for that Splash on Beaver.

– Gorilla brings up WrestleMania III and the previous match, Beaver getting squashed twice in a year. Bobby says Beaver has found his niche in life, getting squashed.

Match #2: George “The Anima” Steele vs. Wellington Wilkins.
From the WWF Superstars Tapings, 1/26/88; in Hershey, PA from Hershey Park Arena. Wilkins would have moderate success internationally in Stampede Wrestling, Japan, and other countries, he has since passed away. Steele brings a chair into the ring and its forced to relinquish. Wilkins attacks George from behind but the Animal no sells. George beats on Wilkins in the corner and pitches him to the floor. Steele rips open a turnbuckle pad and rams Wilkins into the exposed buckle. Isn’t that illegal? George picks Wilkins up into the Flying Hammerlock and wins this thing in 2:36. Complete Stinker. DUD

– Bobby Heenan notices that Dave Hebner was the referee in the Steele match. Bobby tries to segue Dave Hebner into the “Main Event” fiasco but Gorilla cuts him off.

– Craig DeGeorge talks WrestleMania IV. It’s coming to Trump Plaza, won’t that be fun. DeGeorge doesn’t have to look down at his notes as much this week. Good for him.

Match #3: Omar Atlas v. Dusty Wolfe: 1/25/88 from MSG. Announcers are Vince McMahon, Alfred Hayes & Bobby Heenan. In progress, Wolfe has an armbar applied. Hayes rips Dusty apart.
Bobby thinks Wolfe needs to go to the “Terry Garvin School of Self Defense”.
Hayes says he thinks Wolfe has already been there.
Vince plays dumb and inquires about who Terry Garvin is.
Heenan explains that Garvin is an old wrestler who “breaks a lot of young talent in”.
Hayes responds “I saw him in Europe a few years ago breaking talent in”. I don’t know how the announcers are keeping straight faces during the discussion.
Vince changes the subject to discuss a variety of matches on the MSG card and they all but completely ignore the first several minutes of the match, and for good reason. Lots of mat junk, Atlas finally picks things up, gets a string of offense going and puts Dusty down with a rolling cradle. 4:06 of this match is shown out of the full 7:30. Nada. DUD

– Hercules & Bobby Heenan Promo from the locker room right before they enter the ringside. Hercules says he’s ready.

Match #4: The Ultimate Warrior v. Hercules: 1/27/88 Wrestling Challenge Taping in Salisbury, MD from the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. Vince McMahon is alone on commentary as Heenan is at ringside and this was taped during the period Gorilla was MIA. Hercules wants a Tug-of-war with the steel chain, and the Warrior finally agrees. When it looks like Warrior may when, Hercules boots him down and challenges him to get up. Warrior stands up and yanks the chain, SNAPPING the chain! Both Vince & Hercules sell in shock the power it takes to snap a steel chain as the Warrior stands ready to fight. Hercules grabs the remainder of the chain and clotheslines the Warrior with it, resulting in a quick DQ at 1:56. Hercules chokes the Warrior with the chain following the match. The Warrior recovers and chases Hercules down in the aisle and drags him to the back. This would begin their program for WrestleMania IV. There was no wrestling so no rating there, but I’ll give it 3/4* for the angle.

– In PTW Studio, Heenan brags about Hercules snapping the chain. Gorilla & Heenan have some fun banter about the incident. Bobby winds up frustrated. Good little segment.

Match #5: Scott Casey v. Jose Estrada. From MSG, 1/25/88. The Garden is looking pretty empty and Vince covers by saying the fans are still filing in. Lots of good wrestling by both guys, back and forth. This is the difference between good mat wrestling and bad. These guys know what they’d doing. Casey’s biggest run came out of his native Texas, while Estrada has been a WWF guy most of his career. The pace picks up for a moment, but Casey takes it back down to the ground with a Fujiwara armbar and more mat wrestling. Back to their feet the two men trade shots and Casey hits a great looking Piledriver. Kudos to Estrada for taking it the way he did, springing up in the air, these guys really made it look good. Casey covers after a long delay and Jose has his foot on the rope. The two men go back to the mat until Jose escapes by biting. Estrada works over Casey and pitches him to the floor. Estrada hits Casey with a shoulder to the gut and Scott takes a NASTY bump off the apron to the concrete, looked like Casey slipped. Casey slingshots back in with a sunset flip for a 2 count. The two trade some blows, Casey misses a body block. Estrada tries a hangman’s neckbreaker, but Casey holds onto the ropes and Jose takes a bump on his own. Scott follows up with a shoulder breaker for the win in 12:07. It wasn’t bad, but seemed to go right from the beginning of the match, to the finish. There was no real action in between. Both guys looked good, Estrada was a great bumper. I can only give this thing 1/2* though because 10 minutes of the match was really just rolling around on the mat. It wasn’t a bad match though, if that makes any sense to you.

– Mean Gene interviews Mr. Fuji & Demolition. Fuji says the Demos have had some extensive training, including walking up walls. Wow, that is extensive training! Gene asks Smash about Haynes & Patera, but the Demos have made it past them and are now focused on the Tag Team Titles. Ax calls Mean Gene, “Howard”, per usual, Ax says they do whatever Fuji wants, whether it’s a “poked out eyeball” or Tag Team Titles. That promo was something else.

Match #6: “Ravishing” Rick Rude v. Jerry Allen. From MSG, 7/25/87. Rude had barely been in the company 6 weeks when this match first took place. When some guys would first come to the WWF, Vince would have them job on random house shows or at TV Tapings prior to the televised matches in order to test their reaction to doing the job, and also so he had a video of them losing to a jobber put away in case he ever needed to pull it out if a wrestler jumped ship. In Rude’s case, he was forced to do a job to Jerry Allen in the Meadowlands just 2 weeks earlier. Here’s Ricky’s chance for a little revenge. Rude slowly loses the robe and we get things going. Rude tries to psycho out Allen, then throws a clothesline but Jerry ducks and Rude goes flying out of the ring. Allen with some token offense before Rude catches a cross body and turns it into a backbreaker. Flying fist drop by Rick for 2. Rude does a lot of posing in between his moves. Nerve hold by Rick, Allen manages to break free but Rude stays on top with a pair of suplexes. Allen reverses a third suplex, but it does little for him. Rude plants Allen with a dropkick, and is supposed to miss a second one but Jerry forgets to hold onto the ropes and the dropkick actually connects, even though Rude sells it like he missed and Allen sort of stands there confused. Time for Jerry’s comeback. Token baby face offense by Allen and a monkey flip to finish it up. Jerry goes for a second monkey flip but Rude counters with an inverted Atomic Drop. Rick finishes things off with his over the shoulder backbreaker for the submission in 7:13. This really wasn’t much of anything. A stretched out squash for newcomer (at the time) Rude. 1/2*

– Special Report on Royal Rumble 1988 and the Bench Press Record. For those who don’t know, Dino bravo was to set the World’s Bench Pressing record by lifting 712 lbs, but required assistance from his spotter, Jesse Ventura, to make the lift. A clip of the Bomb Angels defeating the Glamour Girls for the Ladies Tag Titles is also shown.

– We follow up with Craig DeGeorge and a special interview with Jesse Ventura, Dino Bravo & Frenchy Martin. Craig questions their claim that Bravo set the new World’s Bench Press Record. Ventura & Bravo swear that Jesse never touched the bar. Martin likely says the same thing in French. That was pointless. (taped 1/26/88 from Hershey, PA @ Hershey Park Arena)

– The third or fourth WrestleMania IV promos airs on the show.

Match #7: The Junkyard Dog v. “The Natural” Butch Reed (w/Slick). From Salisbury, MD and the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, 1/27/88, announcers Gorilla & Bobby doing voiceover work. Gorilla claims they’re in Hershey, PA which was the venue for the Superstars tapings but the banners clearly show this was taped at the Wrestling Challenge tapings in Salisbury, MD. Come on Gorilla, get your stuff together. As things get started all I can keep thinking to myself is how good this could have been 4 years ago in Mid-South. Slick distracts JYD to allow Reed to get the jump, but the Dog takes right over. Some decent bumping by Reed. It’s too bad Butch missed his boat in the WWF after no showing the TV Taping in 1987 where he was to defeat Ricky Steamboat for the IC belt. Honky ended up getting the sport, and well, you know what happened from there. JYD works the arm of Reed and both men clothesline each other, but it looks like JYD wasn’t supposed to hit Reed. Butch half ass sells the clothesline, stays on his feet, and takes over on the Dog. Both guys trade punches, nail each other at the same time and both take bumps. Butch comes back and drops the Dog throat first across the top rope. Some hope spots by the Dog but Reed maintains his control.

Reed nails JYD with a PILEDRIVER but the Dog kicks out on 2! Butch goes up to the top rope but comes down into a punch from the Dog. JYD goes on the offense with the crawling headbutts. Slick gets up on the apron to distract JYD and the referee, and Reed takes the cane of Slick and beats JYD with it repeatedly. Reed just keeps beating on JYD like he’s waiting for something. Oh, nevermind. Here comes Don Muraco jogging to ringside. Better late than never Rock. Muraco hits the ring and goes after Reed. The referee misses Reed with the cane, but he sees Muraco and calls for a DQ with Reed getting the win in 7:13. Muraco chases Reed off with the cane. It wasn’t very good and the finish left a lot to be desired, but Reed tried and I’ve seen JYD look far worse. 3/4*.

– Gorilla promises next week that we’ll hear ALL about what happened at the Main Event. Can’t wait for that! Heenan randomly wanders off the set and into the “producer’s booth”. Bobby promises to finally tell us what happened between Hogan vs. Andre, but Monsoon has his microphone cut. PTW returns next week with a special Friday edition. Man, they’re all over the place on show dates right now.

Final Thoughts:
For a show that couldn’t discuss anything that took place at the 2/5 Main Event show, they did a great job of building suspense, dropping hints, and keeping you anticipated. Next week should be a fun payoff show. Not one match even cracked a single star, and there are a couple of matches here that I find even more questionable than usual. I’m wondering if the only reason the Omar Atlas vs. Dusty Wolfe made it to air was for the Terry Garvin banter. There’s a couple of little things I liked here, namely the Warrior/Herc segment and Little Beaver getting put in his place, but the other 1 hour and 55 minutes of the show is a certain skip this week.

Match of the Night: You can’t really call it a match, but for me the Warrior vs. Hercules angle stood out for me. It was the beginning of their strongman feud for WrestleMania, but it was also just a fun little segment that brought the Warrior into the next level of competition. It certainly beat everything else. Gang squashing Beaver comes in second.

I’ll be back with the Friday edition of PTW from 2/19/88 soon, with the fallout from one of the most infamous angles of all time between Andre, Hogan, and twin referees.

Thanks to reader Paul B. for sending in these results from last night’s WWE live event in Phoenix, AZ.

* WWE Intercontinental Championship: Big E.(c) defeated Ryback. Pretty mediocre match. Wasn’t good. There were no botches, but I wasn’t entertained. Big E. won clean. Big E had good support behind him and the heat was on Ryback throughout. After Big E won, the titantron started to have Ryback’s titantron play, but they fixed it and no one noticed.

* The Bella Twins defeated Tamina and Summer Rae. Bellas got an ovation because they were in their hometown.

* WWE Tag Team Champions The New Age Outlaws defeated The Usos & The Real Americans in a triple threat match. The Rhodes brothers were not there. Before their match, The New Age Outlaws did their usual promo hyping the fans which did work. Even though they are heels, most of the fans loved the New Age Outlaws. This was a real interesting match and the crowd was into it.

Del Rio cuts a promo backstage on facing Batista later in the night.

* Daniel Bryan, Sheamus & Christian defeated The Shield. Daniel got the biggest reaction of the night. 95% of the crowd were on their feet doing the he’s chant. Even though I’m not a critic, I award this match of the night. It was one of the only matches which had my attention the entire time. The match went about 25 minutes and I think that each performer in this match gave it their all.

After the match, Kane comes out to the ring after the match and Daniel Bryan asks Kane to hug it out, but Kane wanted an apology for what happened on Raw last week. Bryan attacks Kane, who then attempts to go for the chokeslam before being countered and beaten out the ring. Bryan leaves the ring to “Yes!” chants.

* Bray Wyatt defeated Dolph Ziggler with Sister Abigail. Ziggler was billed from Arizona as opposed to Hollywood, Florida. However, it does make sense because Ziggler lives in Arizona. After the match, fans cheered for Ziggler as he (Kayfabe) struggled out of the ring.

* Batista defeated Alberto Del Rio via DQ. Entertaining match and the crowd was behind Batista throughout. At one point, Batista moved out of the way right as Del Rio was about to deliver a dropkick. This caused Del Rio to dive between the second and third rope. Del Rio was DQ’d and attempted to hit Batista with a chair, but Batista countered with a Batista Bomb. Del Rio exited the ring and went into the first few rows. Because I had floor seats, he was five feet away. On his way out, Batista slapped hands with all the fans ringside and up and down the ramp.

* WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton defeated John Cena in a steel cage match. Throughout the match Orton played to the crowd as the heel he is. Orton attempted the punt kick right as Cena moved out of the way so that he could deliver the AA. As Cena put Orton in the STF, Orton was able to crawl to the cage door and almost escape, but Cena stopped him. Cena was pushed into the ref and this allowed Orton to low blow Cena and leave the cage, via the door to win the match. If this match had anyone else, they would have been booed out of the arena. It wasn’t that good. My friend who went with me, was able to guess some of the spots before they happened. And I was able to predict the ending.

After the match, Orton told the fans not to leave yet, because he deserved respect. Eventually Cena got up and slammed the door in Orton, causing him to fall back and Cena gave him an AA. Cena then climbed to the top of the cage to celebrate.

This was a good house show. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible. My favorite moment was the whole crowd doing the yes chant with Daniel. Overall I give this show a 3.5 stars out of 5.
