Raw Pre-Show 4/28/14

– Our panel this week conists of Josh Matthews, Booker T, Alex Riley, and Santino in character. Good Lord, I hope I can withstand 30 minutes of Santino, but the good news is this means he’s likely not on Raw! Riley drops some Nelly lyrics in respect to St. Louis and Booker gives him a look. We move on to last week’s Daniel Bryan/Kane angle, including video footage and panel discussion.

– Highlights from last week’s issues between John Cena and the Wyatt Family. The fans vote all 3 Wyatts vs. Cena last week. Panel discusses their Extreme Rules Match.

– Clips of the Shield and Evolutions issues from last Monday, and video of the Shield taking wrestlers out last week on Smackdown. Panel discusses the 6-man match at Extreme Rules. Booker says the Shield might not “know their beans from their cornbread”.

– IC Contender tournament talk, clips from last week. We see Swagger cost Cesaro. It’s RVD vs. Barrett in the finals tonight. Renee Young interviews Barrett, and he has some GOOD NEWS! He will be the #1 contender after tonight and win the IC Title at Extreme Rules on Sunday.

– Emma pops into the panel to say hello with her pink sock/cobra. She gets no speaking role, but she manages to cobra strike Alex Riley, who sells it for 2 seconds, so apparently he’s tougher than most of the WWE Roster.

– BO-LIEVE promo.

– Clips from last weeks Rhodes Brothers dissention, and Rybaxel attacking the Usos. Byron Saxton interviews the Usos about tonight’s tag title match vs. Rybaxel.

– The announcers are on their way out, and we’re ready to go… Oh yeah, Hugh Jackman is here. Joy.

WWE Monday Night Raw 4/28/14 from Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, MO

– We kick off Raw with a Steel Cage surrounding the ring. Out comes John Cena. John questions the fans why they voted against him last week and made it 3 on 1. The fans respond “You Suck”. Cena just keeps asking the fans WHY? Cena says you either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain. Ten years ago Cena got the biggest response of his career in this arena, but tonight it’s changed. Cena puts over all the new talent… Except Wyatt. He says Wyatt isn’t the same as the others, he doesn’t love wrestling, he loves himself.

Apparently this cage will keep the Wyatt Family out of the ring at Extreme Rules, even though they got into the Elimination Chamber. Cena doesn’t want Wyatt to escape the cage because that means his message will escape the cage.

The lights go out and we hear a young child singing “He’s got the whole world in his hands”. The lights come on and there’s an entire CHILDREN’S CHOIR singing the song on the stage. The lights go back out and Bray Wyatt appears singing the song. Wyatt leads the children’s choir to the ring, and I have NO IDEA WTF is going on now…

Wyatt sings “He’s got the whole CENAtion in his hands”. The camera pans to the children around ringside, and they’re all wearing sheep masks and Wyatt laughing. Bray sits in his rocking chair with a sheep child on his knee. Cena looks disturbed in the ring. I’m not even quite sure what to make of this one…

What… in the HELL was that???? Wow…

-Commercial Break-

 1. WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel. Jey gets the better of Axel to start and Ryback tags in. Ryback takes over but misses a splash. Jimmy Uso tags in and Rybaxel is tossed to the floor. The Usos land stereo dives to the floor, with Jey Uso selling an ankle injury following the dive. We go to break as I go warm up my coffee….

Back from break, got my coffee and Jimmy Uso is taking a beat down while brother Jey is being checked on by ringside doctors. Ryback and Axel try a Double Superplex, but Jimmy sends Ryback off the ropes and front suplexes Axel down on top of Ryback. Jimmy makes a hot tag to injured brother Jey… Jey on fire, superkick on Ryback, Samoan Drop on Axel, and the Rikishi butt ram in the corner on Axel for a very near fall… Bad timing on a spot and Axel is forced to muscle Uso over with a back suplex, and Ryback with a spinebuster for 2… Ryback sets up for the meathook clothesline, but runs into a big superkick for another near fall!!! Damn, pretty good match, I think Ryback has found his calling in tag wrestling. Ryback fights back and hits a big clothesline, then sets up for shell shock….

Jey Uso wiggles free and counters with a sunset flip for 2… Rybaxel double team Jey, but Jey makes a blind tag to Jimmy… Jey superkicks Ryback from the ring… AXEL LANDS THE PERFECT PLEX ON JEY!!!! But Jimmy comes off the top rope with a diving splash on Axel for 1….2…3!!!! Usos retain in 11:30 of a really good match…. There’s no reason this couldn’t have been on PPV rather than some of the other crap…

-Commercial Break-

– Adam Rose Promo. They’re playing Hungry, Hungry, Hippos. Next stop… Monday Night Raw… Next Week…

– Backstage Paul Heyman and Cesaro chat… Heyman isn’t happy with RVD’s comments about Paul last week… Paul isn’t happy with RVD, and the last guy he wasn’t happy with was the Undertaker… Paul basically asks Cesaro to handle RVD, without actually asking him.

– Highlights from last week’s Kane/Daniel Bryan segment. Stephanie will be here tonight to make a public apology. Boy, I can’t wait…

-Commercial Break-

Sheamus starts to make his way out for action, and barely gets into posing position when he is clobbered from behind in the stage from Titus O’Neil… Oooookayyyy…. At least they’re trying, even if it doesn’t work…

2. Sheamus vs. Titus O’Neil. The referee gives Sheamus a brief moment to recover before calling the bell to start the match… Titus right back on Sheamus, and BROGUE KICK OUT OF NOWHERE… Sheamus with the win in 36 seconds… Well, that did a lot for Mr. O’Neil…

I guess this was there way to make sure they squeezed a second match into the first hour…

– Kofi Kingston gets stuck in a suit advertising the WWE Network…

-Commercial Break-

– We’ve got Dolph Ziggler in the ring to promote the new X-Men movie featuring Hugh Jackman. Speaking of Hugh, Ziggler brings Mr. Wolverine Jackman out next. Now that they’ve kissed Jackman’s ass, he reciprocates and puts over Raw… We move on to video footage from 2 years ago of Jackman nailing Ziggler, leading to Zack Ryder getting the pin. Dolph shoots and says that Swagger has kicked him harder than that. The two men shake hands and bury the hatchet….

Damien Sandow comes out in a goofy looking MAGNETO costume that’s too big for him, and for the first time in months he’s entertaining… Sandow cuts a good promo, and I continue to wonder who he pissed off to get put in his current position… Sandow legit trips on his cape and Dolph makes fun.

Fans chant “kick his ass” to which Sandow quips “don’t tell me what to do”. This is so bad, it’d good… Sandow made his Magneto costume… Jackman wants to touch the quality work… Sandow uses his “magnetism” powers to keep them silent… It doesn’t work… Fake magnetic noise begins to play over the speakers as Magneto Sandow draws the microphone from Jackman’s hand… Jackman plays along before throwing the mic at Sandow and hiptossing him, and then a ZIGZAG from Ziggler on Sandow to end the segment…

I can’t make this up peoples…..

-Commercial Break-

3. Cesaro (w/Paul Heyman) vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter). I see Swagger is working on yet another ridiculous hairdo. Heyman cuts some of his usual good promo stuff before the match… Oh Lord, Cesaro still has the air raid siren music from last week, I had hoped they’d retire that after one week… Some very cool reversals begin things leading to Cesaro hitting a pair of gut wrench suplex… Swagger goes to the floor, Cesaro follows him out with a double axe handle off the ropes… Jack comes back driving Cesaro into the barricade and back in the ring for 2… Swagger takes over while Lawler tells some really outdated jokes to no response…Time for a new book King… Big boot by Swagger for 2… Cesaro comes back and Zeb Colter trips him up… Paul heyman attacks Colter by grabbing him by the mustache… Swagger becomes distracted and Cesaro lands a bridging German for the win in 3:10…

– Renee Young stops John Cena backstage to ask him to comment on the Bray Wyatt stuff from earlier… John has no response, then walks away…

-Commercial Break-

– We see a shot of Kane’s mask inside a glass case backstage, letting us know the demon is away in a safe place…. $100 says the mask will disappear right before the Bryan segment. 😉

4. Cody Rhodes (w/Goldust) vs. Alberto Del Rio. For as much as I was against Del Rio in the main events, I almost feel sorry for how far down he has fallen. I blame the unification of the two top titles as the reason why a whole lot of guys are lost in the shuffle now… ADR attacks Cody to start. Rhodes battles back and tries a springboard but ADR blocks it… Cody stays in control momentarily before ADR locks on the cross armbreaker as the crowd makes no noise… Cody fights the hold but eventually taps in a little over 3:30…

Cody walks off upset with Goldust trailing behind him, trying to talk to his younger brother…

-Commercial Break-

It’s Lana, and I can only encourage everyone to check out her recent Instagram photos….

5. Alexander Rusev (w/Lana) vs. Xavier Woods (w/R-Truth). Rusev does his usual mauling of Woods. Swinging spike slam and the Acoolade looks to end it but R-Truth interferes to give Rusev the DQ win in under a minute.

Truth fights with Rusev, Truth pulls the top rope down and Rusev falls out of the ring. Rusev tries to get back in but takes an inzuigiri and is forced to leave by Lana…

– Make-A-Wish footage with John Cena. The Make-A-Wish kids are in the front row…

– Renee Young is with Rob Van Dam. Zeb Colter interrupts RVD. Colter wants to work with RVD to end their common enemy, Paul Heyman. RVD declines. Colter doesn’t look happy… I smell a triple threat at Extreme Rules… RVD vs. Cesaro vs. Swagger…

-Commercial Break-

6. Los Matadores (w/Torito) vs. Drew McIntyre & Heath Slater (w/Hornswoggle & Jinder Mahal). More old jokes from Lawler, and they belong in this match. Matadores on the offense over both #MB members. Jinder tries to keep Torito and Horny separated and he gets gored in the butt… One of the Matadores comes out to break it up, while back in the ring Heath Slater hits some cool looking DDT on the other Matador for the 1…2…3… Holly poop, 3MB WON A MATCH!!!!! HEATH SLATER WINS!!! HEATH SLATER WINS!!! HEATH SLATER WINS!!! Match goes maybe 2:15…

JBL: Barry Horowitz is spinning in his grave, and he isn’t even dead!

After the match Torito takes out Hornswoggle, then hits a top rope dive to the floor on Heath Slater… It’s a shame when your mascot is the star of the group…

The Extreme Rules Preshow match will feature Torito vs. Hornswoggle in a “Wee”LC match…

-Commercial Break-

– On Main Event tomorrow it’s Sheamus vs. Bray Wyatt!

– Stephanie McMahon on her way to the ring to make a public apology to Bryan… Daniel is invited out, he’s out with Brie Bella at the top of the stage… #1. The Brie stuff isn’t needed and won’t work long term. #2. I’m cool with the beard, but do something with that hair Bryan…. Bryan comes out with a neck brace, says he almost believed Stephanie but everyone knows she’s full of crap… Some back and forth banter about the incident, how Brie Bella felt, how sorry Stephanie is, how Steph tried to give Kane a backbone again, but he went too far…

Steph continues to sell her sorrow, but Daniel isn’t buying it…. McMahon tries to lure Bryan to the ring, Bryan declines and discusses his injuries… But he WILL be at Extreme Rules… Stephanie mentions Kane’s mask being locked in her office and Kane’s whereabouts unknown… Stephanie can’t make Bryan wrestle tonight, but she can make Brie wrestle… Stephanie books a match with Brie Bella challenging Paige for the Divas Championship, RIGHT NOW…..

Bryan says he’s going to watch Brie’s back for the match, Stephanie is cool with that… What do you know? Brie just happens to be wearing gear…

– We go to the back, and somebody owes me $100 because KANE’S MASK IS GONE!!!!!! IT’S GONE!!! OH NO!!!! The Monster is loose!!!!!

When we come back, it’s Divas title action, but Kane is roaming nearby!!!! OH MY!!!!

End dramatic sequence…

-Commercial Break-

7. WWE Divas Champion Paige vs. Brie Bella (w/Daniel Bryan). Probably not the best way to keep Paige a baby face here. In fact, Paige is working heel. Perfect Plex by Paige for 2… Paige in super heel mode for this match, which is odd since she’s working Tamina at the PPV… Crowd really doesn’t care about the match until Brie takes over on offense… Paige fights back with a SUPERPLEX!!!! The announcers glance over it as if it were a hiptoss… EXPLOSIONS!!! DAMN IT ALL!!!! IT’S KANE’S MUSIC…. BUT WHERE IT KANE?????

Paige gets the hell out of the ring and this match is pretty much a throw away after a couple of minutes…

KANE CUTS THROUGH THE CANVAS!!! HE’S UNDER THE RING!!!!! THE DREADED RED LIGHTING EFFECT MAKES IT ALL THE MORE SCARY BY GAWD!!!! Kane grabs Brie and tries to DRAG HER STRAIGH TO HEELLLLLLLLLLL…. Bryan fights with kane and gets tossed… Kane goes after Brie again… Daniel Bryan blasts Kane WITH A WRENCH!!!! DOWN GOES KANE!!! Bryan checks on Brie, and KANE SITS UP!!!! KANE CHOKESLAMS BRYAN!!!

Kane tries to drag Brie to hell, where there are no kidnapping laws… But Brie escapes!!!!! Pyro goes off for the monster… Bryan is being checked on at ringside as Kane laughs…

-Commercial Break-

– The announcers are still freaked out from the scary red lights and pyro from last segment… Personally, I’m more curious to see how they fixed the ring canvas so fast… Guess I’ve been a fan too long…

– Backstage Daniel is with the doctors while Brie shakes in absolute terror… Stephanie pops in, crying and apologizing… She is SO sorry… Stephanie wants to know if Bryan will be able to wrestle at Extreme Rules… Bryan says HE WILL BE THERE… Daniel tells Steph she will be sorry for bringing Brie into this… Brie shouts to Stephanie , “Get out, You Bitch!”….

– Renee Young with John Cena, he’s ready to talk… He apologizes for snubbing Renee earlier… The mind games stop this Sunday, Cena has special plans…

– Bad News Barrett, in his gear, is elevated a couple stories up into the air for some baaaaad news… the gavel bangs… WWE’s slogan is THEN, NOW, FOREVER… RVD’s slogan should just be THEN…. He’s been irrelevant for years… Barrett does the RVD pointing but calls himself BNB.

-Commercial Break-

Finals of the #1 Contender Tournament for the Intercontinental Championship.
8. Rob Van Dam vs. Bad News Barrett. One of these two guys will meet Big E at Extreme Rules for the IC Title… Pretty sure it’s obvious, but let’s see what happens, shall we? Some back and forth offense as it gets going, Big E is shown watching in the back… RVD sends Barrett to the floor and hits a moonsault off the apron. Back inside, RVD grabs a side headlock, but Barrett dumps him to the floor… BNB works on RVD outside, then back in for a 2 count… Van Dam fights back with a body scissor roll up for 2. Rob tries a jumping spot in the corner, but comes Barrett boots him in the gut on the way down to a big response from the fans… RVD rolls from the ring to sell on the floor, and you know what that means… Time for a commercial!

Back from break, and per the usual the heel has the face in a chinlock and the face almost immediately breaks free for a comeback… RVD does break free, but Barrett cuts him right back off… Neckbreaker by Barrett gets 2… Another chinlock by BNB. RVD comes back, countering a knee with a roll up and then a kick to the face… RVD tries Rolling Thunder but Barrett gets up, RVD hits a spin kick to take BNB back down… RVD looks to the top rope when CESARO climbs onto the apron… Jack Swagger is right out behind him and Swagger and Cesaro go at it on the floor…

Barrett tries to sneak in a Bull Hammer on RVD, but Van Dam ducks and lays out BNB… ROLLING THUNDER…. Aand RVD goes up for the Five Star Frog Splash, but Cesaro climbs onto the apron… RVD knocks him off, but RVD loses his chance at Barrett and Wade lands the BULL HAMMER ELBOW for the 1…2..3… in 11:00….

Barrett wins and will face Big E on Sunday… BNB gets out of the ring with no time to celebrate to let the other 3 get their angle in…

Cesaro lays out RVD after the match, then Swagger lays out Cesaro, then RVD lays out Swagger, and RVD hits the Frog Splash on Cesaro after the match to close out the segment… Three way at Extreme Rules I would assume… but some BAD NEWS for Big E…

– Michal Cole reminds us that Extreme Rules will NOT be on DirecTV or DISH, but you can get it on the Network… Screw you satellite!!!

– Backstage promo by the Shield. Talking about how Rolex watches, nice suits, and limos don’t make you the best, they’re to cover up inadequacies… The Shield are what’s up… BELIEVE THAT!!!

-Commercial Break-

It’s Evolution… HHH gets to do the talking… Shocker… The Shield are starting to remind him of Evolution… But the problem is, Evolution is still here…And out comes the Shield….

The two teams stand face to face when…

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

It’s RIC FLAIR!!!! And Evolution is smiling…. Evolution applaud as Flair enters the ring…

Flair talks about the Four Horsemen, then Evolution as time went on… And greatness comes full circle… Flair keeps putting over men in the ring without mentioning any names… It becomes clear he’s not talking about Evolution, but rather The Shield!!! Flair endorses the Shield, and then just leaves the ring… Crowd seemed confused and there was little reaction from the wrestlers to help things along… The crowd is silent, Michael Cole sells it like the crowd is stunned, but I think everyone is just confused… There was no explanation and then Flair just left…

It looks like Flair has EVOLVED and ADAPTED…

9. Randy Orton (w/HHH & Batista) vs. Roman Reigns (w/Ambrose & Rollins). Crowd is absolutely DEAD for this match, I think the Flair stuff just really confused the hell out of them. lol… Anyway, back and forthg and it spills to the floor where Roman suplexes Orton. Orton throws Reigns into the steel steps… Orton tries the suspended DDT back inside, but Reigns breaks free… Reigns on the offense now, hits the dropkick up onto the apron and sets up for the spear, but HHH grabs his leg…The distraction allows Orton to hit a backbreaker on Reigns…

Things break down with HHH & Batista brawling with Ambrose and Rollins… Evolution lay the Shield out outside, but inside Reigns lands the Superman Punch on Orton… Reigns leaves the ring to help his partners, but Evolution attack Roman 3 on 1 and we get a DQ in favor of Reigns in 5:00…

After the match it’s Evolution fun time… HHH, Orton & Batista lay out the Shield. HHH hits a spinebuster on Ambrose on the floor… Reigns gets throws into the steel post…

It wouldn’t be HHH if it wasn’t overkill…

The attack just keeps going… crowd isn’t really into it… HHH goes for the pedigree on Reigns, but Rollins out of nowhere with a springboard attack on HHH, and a pele style kick on Batista…. Roman Reigns SPEARS HHH!!!

The Shield try a Triple Powerbomb on HHH, but Batista and Orton distract and HHH takes off….

The Shield stand tall as the show ends…

WWE Raw “Backstage Pass” Post Show

– Not sure what the dark match was, but it ended at 11:29 eastern. Cena’s music was playing after the match…

That’s all!

Fighting Spirit Review: Dragon Gate “Open the New Year Gate” on 1/18/14

0

Date: January 18th, 2014
Location: Osaka, Japan

Announced Attendance: 1,800

I am finally getting back around to Dragon Gate. Dragon Gate events take the longest to review since their events are so action-packed, so I tend to procrastinate reviewing them. That isn’t a knock on the action; it just takes almost double the time because doing play by play on a Dragon Gate event isn’t easy. But I try to be fair. This event features an Open the Triangle Gate match in the main event, here is the full card:

– Don Fujii and Gamma vs. T-Hawk and U-T
– Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! vs. Yosuke Santa Maria vs. Super Shisa vs. Mondai Ryu
– BxB Hulk vs. Ryotsu Shimizu
– Kotoka vs. Shingo Takagi
– Jimmy Kanda and Jimmy Kagetora vs. Naruki Doi and Kzy
– Masato Yoshino and Akira Tozawa vs. YAMATO and Cyber Kong
Open the Triangle Gate Championship: Jimmy Susumu, Ryo “Jimmy” Saito, and Mr. Que Que Naoki Tanizaki Toyonaka Dolphin vs. CIMA, Masaaki Mochizuki, and Dragon Kid

Don Fujii and Gamma vs. T-Hawk and U-T

Gamma and U-T start things off. Takedown by U-T to start and he hits a pair of armdrags. Gamma side-steps a dropkick attempt, he goes off the ropes but U-T hits the second dropkick. U-T tags in T-Hawk while Fujii comes in as well, and the two wrestlers trade chops. Punches by Fujii, Irish whip by T-Hawk and he hits a shoulderblock. Gamma runs in the ring but he gets a shoulderblock as well, U-T comes in and attacks Gamma in the corner. They throw Gamma into the corner, and hit running back elbows; T-Hawk puts Gamma in the corner again so that U-T can hit a dropkick from the floor. U-T comes in the ring and clubs Gamma in the back, but Gamma connects with a heel kick. Gamma picks up U-T and tags in Fujii, who chops U-T in the corner. Fujii picks up U-T and hits a scoop slam before kicking U-T in the back. Fujii twists U-T’s neck with his ankles and then does it a second time. Fujii picks up U-T, Gamma goes up to the top turnbuckle and spits water on U-T. Stomp to the head by Fujii as U-T gets back to his feet, slaps to the chest by U-T but Fujii chops him back. Irish whip by Fujii, reversed, but Fujii avoids the dropkick attempt. Fujii chops U-T into the corner, Irish whip, but U-T kicks Fujii back. Two more kicks by U-T, he goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits the missile dropkick. U-T tags in T-Hawk, and T-Hawk chops Fujii. Gamma runs in the ring and goes for a suplex, but T-Hawk reverses it and suplexes Gamma. Chop to the chest by T-Hawk to Gamma, Gamma fights back but T-Hawk gets the better of the exchange.

T-Hawk goes off the ropes but Gamma catches him with a kick to the head. Back bodydrop by Gamma, he goes off the ropes but T-Hawk knees him in the head. Cover by T-Hawk, but it gets a two count. U-T runs in the ring and starts elbowing Fujii, finally knocking him off the apron. U-T then charges Gamma in the corner and both men hit running elbows. Gamma catches U-T with a lariat and hits T-Hawk with one, T-Hawk goes off the ropes but Gamma hits a second lariat. Fujii comes in the ring, they throw U-T into the corner but he avoids both of their attacks, making Fujii hit a lariat onto Gamma. U-T goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a double missile dropkick, T-Hawk comes in the ring and chops Fujii but Fujii chops him back. Argentine Backbreaker by T-Hawk to Fujii but Fujii gets out of it and hits a backdrop suplex. Chops and elbows by U-T to Fujii, he goes off the ropes but Gamma hits him from the floor. Gamma then comes in the ring and goes off the ropes but U-T rolls him up for a two count. U-T goes back to Fujii and they trade strikes, but Fujii levels U-T with a lariat. Fujii picks up U-T and puts him up on the second turnbuckle; he then joins him and hits a second turnbuckle chokeslam. Cover, but U-T barely kicks out. Fujii grabs U-T and puts him in the HIMEI, and he has no choice but to submit. Your winners: Don Fujii and Gamma

Match Thoughts: An acceptable opener, even though the wrestling style of Gamma and Fujii isn’t my personal cup of tea. U-T looked really good here though as the young wrestler trying to overcome his elders, and even though he did not succeed, he got an A for Effort here. The rest was fine but just serviceable, lots of chop battles and not a ton of substance. Score: 5.0

Genki Horiguchi vs. Yosuke Santa Maria vs. Super Shisa vs. Mondai Ryu

This is a Four Way Match, first pinfall wins. They all circle each other to start, Ryu stomps down Maria while Shisa and Horiguchi trade submission holds. Ryu runs over to Horiguchi and Shisa, try all trade waistlocks until Maria joins them as well, but they let go when Maria starts grinding into Ryu. Double Irish whip by Horiguchi and Shisa to Maria, they both drop down, and Maria drops down between them. Shisa and Horiguchi roll away as Ryu returns to the ring and kicks Maria. Stomps by Ryu to Maria, Irish whip, reversed, and Maria dropkicks Ryu. Horiguchi attacks Maria from behind then gets into it with Shisa, uppercuts by Shisa to Horiguchi and he goes off the ropes, but Horiguchi delivers a dropkick. Shisa fires back with his own dropkick and he puts Horiguchi in the Mexican Surfboard. Maria then gets in the ring and while Horiguchi is in the hold, Maria goes go kiss Shisa but Shisa releases Horiguchi to get out of the way. Irish whip by Maria to Shisa to the corner, Shisa does a headstand in the corner but Maria comes over and grabs him low. Ryu returns to the ring, elbows by Maria to Ryu but Ryu drop toeholds Maria into the second rope and jumps down onto him. Ryu then gets some water and spits it into Maria’s face. Back in the ring Ryu rubs his hands onto Maria’s face and kicks him from behind. Chops by Ryu to Maria in the corner, Irish whip, reversed, Ryu drops Maria out onto the apron and goes off the ropes, but Maria hits a swandive missile dropkick.

Horiguchi comes in the ring but Maria catches him with a hip attack. Irish whip by Shisa to Maria into the corner, but Maria jumps up to the top turnbuckle and sails out of the ring with a plancha down onto Horiguchi. Ryu gets in the ring, strikes by Shisa to Ryu and he goes off the ropes, but Ryu catches him with an atomic drop followed by a lariat. Cover, but it gets a two count. Ryu Irish whips Shisa to the corner, reversed, but Ryu kicks Shisa as he charges in. Ryu goes up to the top turnbuckle but Shisa hits a handstand headscissors. Maria then runs in the ring and hits Ryu with a leg drop bulldog. Cover, but Horiguchi breaks it up. Horiguchi picks up Ryu and goes for a suplex but Ryu blocks it and kicks Horiguchi low. Maria charges Ryu but Ryu kicks him low as well. Maria sells it on a delay, giving Horiguchi a chance to slide a rod under Maria’s legs, which Maria then uses to ‘crotch’ Ryu. Shisa is back up and he goes for the Yoshi Tonic, but before he can hit the move, Maria plants him with a kiss. Shisa rolls out of the ring, kick by Ryu to Maria and he goes off the ropes, but Maria catches him with the Zona Rosa and picks up the three count. Your winner: Yosuke Santa Maria

Match Thoughts: A comedy match, obviously, since Maria was in it. Some of the comedy worked and some didn’t, I am not sure I can ‘suspend belief’ enough to think that a kiss hurts. I think if one dude kissed another dude it would make the kissed dude want to kick the guys ass, not act hurt and roll out of the ring. Plus there was no real set-up for the ending so it came across as a bit weak, Maria does have some real offense so it wouldn’t have hurt to make the ending a bit more definitive than it was. It did get a few chuckles out of me so far from worthless; you know what you are getting as soon as you see Maria is in the match. Short term it seems fine but since he is a skilled wrestler I hope at some point he finds a new persona so he isn’t typecasted the rest of his career. Score: 4.0

BxB Hulk vs. Ryotsu Shimizu

Hulk spits water in Shimizu’s face to start the match and hits a high kick, cover, but it gets a two count. Stomps by Hulk and he applies a reverse chinlock, he picks up Shimizu and delivers a capture suplex. Stomps by Hulk, he picks up Shimizu and kicks him in the leg and chest. Armbar by Hulk and he hits Shimizu’s hand while keeping him in the hold. Back high kick by Hulk, cover, but Shimizu gets a shoulder up. Hulk applies an elevated single leg crab hold and reverts it into an ankle hold before letting Shimizu go. Hulk toys with Shimizu before picking him up, snapmare by Hulk and he dropkicks Shimizu in the back of the head. Standing corkscrew senton by Hulk, cover, but it gets a two count. Hulk elbows Shimizu in the top of the head and then hits a scissors kick. Hulk charges Shimizu in the corner and hits a big boot, Irish whip by Hulk but Shimizu fires back with a pair of shoulderblocks. A third one finally sends Hulk to the mat, Shimizu charges Hulk but Hulk kicks him back. Hulk puts Shimizu in the corner but Shimizu kicks him when he charges in and hits a diving shoulderblock off the second turnbuckle. Shimizu picks up Hulk but Hulk kicks Shimizu in the leg, Shimizu picks up Hulk and delivers a swinging powerslam for a two count. Shimizu picks up Hulk and goes for a suplex but Hulk lands on his feet, waistlock by Shimizu, Hulk elbows out of it but Shimizu hits a chokebomb. Cover, but it only gets a two count. Shimizu grabs Hulk by the legs and delivers the Giant Swing, but Hulk hits a hurricanrana. Shimizu goes off the ropes but Hulk catches him with a trio of kicks. Scissors kick by Hulk, he goes out to the apron and hits a swandive missile dropkick. Cover, but it gets a two count. Hulk picks up Shimizu and kicks him in the stomach, he picks up Shimizu in a pump-handle but Shimizu gets out of it. Hulk drives Shimizu back into the corner and hits a front flip kick, he then puts Shimizu up on the top turnbuckle and hits a scissors kick. Hulk slams Shimizu down to the mat and hits a pair of Heel Drop kicks, cover, and he picks up the three count. Your winner: BxB Hulk

Match Thoughts: A fun rookie vs. veteran match, as Hulk gave Shimizu plenty of offense so it wasn’t just a squash. This followed a common but successful formula – veteran dominates for a few minutes, Shimizu gets in some good spots and near falls, veteran takes back over and wins. Hulk actually acted well as the grumpy veteran since it fits into his emo character anyway and while Shimizu looks goofy he doesn’t come across as a bad wrestler. I think Shimizu will have to wait until a gimmick change to break through to the next level but this was a very solid match. Score: 6.5

Kotoka vs. Shingo Takagi

Kotoka charges Takagi to start the match, kicks and knees by Kotoka in the corner and he chokes Takagi. Match Thoughts: A different format than the last match, which I think helped it since they had the same general theme. Here, since Takagi was quite a bit bigger than Kotoka they were able to do more of the ‘size’ spots, with Takagi going for power moves and Kotoka aiming for high flying moves. I never really felt Kotoka was about to win, since he wasn’t, but he got in some good shots against the larger veteran and it was far from a squash match. Another good singles match from Dragon Gate that got the point across without a lot of extra fluff. Score: 6.5

Your winners: Naruki Doi and Kzy

Match Thoughts: This is in a nutshell the type of match I am not a big fan of. I can appreciate the ‘hate’ being shown here, emotion and passion are good things in general, but it just took too much away from the match. When there was battling outside the ring, the people in the ring were just doing rest holds and wasting time since they knew the crowd wasn’t watching them. Something seems off when at the same time one guy is trying to throw another guy off a balcony, and in the ring their team mates are trading headlocks. Since it was a short match they didn’t have much of a transition and it went straight from brawling to the end stretch of the match without giving the wrestlers a chance to calm things down any. This may have worked if the brawling was a little shorter or if the end stretch was a little longer, but as it was it was just too disjointed and all over the place for me. Score: 3.5

Match Thoughts: This match took some time to get going but it was fun once it did. The first half of the match is really basic offense, lots of punch/kick/stomps, things that don’t impress me after 25 years of watching wrestling. Once they decided to really go at it though it got a lot better and they did more of the ‘fast paced’ offense you would expect. I liked the definitive win here, Cyber Kong left no doubt that Tozawa wasn’t getting up as he hit him with his three biggest moves in a row. A solid match after an uninspired start. Score: 6.0

Match Thoughts: Like the last match this one started a bit slow but it picked up quicker and ended up being a pretty good match. I did think it lacked a sense of importance for a title match, the wrestlers didn’t really act with any more urgency than the wrestlers did in the other matches. It just felt like another really solid Dragon Gate main event. Saito did the bulk of the work here and it was definitely far from an even distribution in terms of which wrestler was in the ring. But the match was fluid and exciting, how they keep track of what they are doing and when I have no idea but it keeps you on your edge of your seat. I also liked that they kept the ‘overkill’ to a minimum, the ending felt right when it happened, the match did not drag on unnecessarily. Good way to end the event. Score: 7.0

Final Thoughts:

Best Match: Jimmy Susumu, Ryo Saito, and Naoki Tanizaki vs. CIMA, Mochizuki, and Dragon Kid. This was a fun main event. I wish it had more of a sense of urgency since it was a title match, but they built it up slow into a frenzy to put on an entertaining show. I also liked that there was no ‘move overkill’ at all, Saito got his big move in and the match was over. Sometimes Dragon Gate tries too hard to be exciting to the point of being ridiculous but it was done right here.

MVP: Ryo Saito. In the main event, not only did Saito pick up the win but he controlled the match. Hardly any time went by during the match that Saito wasn’t either the legal man, or getting involved in some way. He was really crisp from start to finish and he built up well to him getting his big move in without any overkill. A really good effort by Saito.

Overall: Even though the event was lacking that super blow-away match, from start to finish it was an entertaining show. Over half of the matches were ‘solid’ or better and really only one match was bad as the rest served some purpose or another. This card had some variety, which Dragon Gate sometimes lacks, with singles matches, tag team matches, six man tag matches, a comedy match, some veteran vs. rookie matches….. just about any type of match that a fan could ask for. Recommendation to pick up, it was a really good show.

Ken Shamrock Talks Triple H’s Ego, Brock Lesnar, More

0

Ken Shamrock was a guest on The Shoot yesterday for a 30 minute interview which can be heard here (the interview starts at the 1 hour mark). During the interview, Shamrock discussed UFC president Dana White, Brock Lesnar’s UFC run, Chael Sonnen and Ronda Rousey possibly coming to WWE. Here are some highlights:

Triple H’s ego and him possibly running WWE someday:

“Here’s a guy that has a huge ego. He has a hard time with putting anybody over and let alone outside the business when someone like Brock Lesnar would have to hurt him. His ego wouldn’t let him walk around in a sling. He wants people to know it’s entertainment unless he’s the one doing it then he wants you to walk around in a leg cast. This is what I see the problem is and I’ve been pretty critical about it. You’ve got somebody in that position that’s got too big of an ego to run a company like that. Hunter goes to extreme lengths to look good, to be big and cut and make sure he’s on the cover of the muscle magazine and make sure he’s in fitness things. He’s the guy who’s putting himself in the forefront. For anybody to run a company like the WWE, you can’t be that guy. You’ve got too much talent out there for you to put yourself out there in front of them.”

WWE not using UFC to help promote Lesnar when he returned in 2012:

“I could easily tell you what happened. Triple H happened. You go in there, you take a guy with his stature, his tremendous ability, the limited experience he had in the MMA world and yet he still went in and beat a lot of world title guys. He goes in and Hunter has a match with him and knocks him out with one punch. I think it’s pretty clear what happened. There’s a lot of ego involved with guys running the organization. It’s a shame too, I mean I don’t know who’s pulling the strings.

“I wouldn’t think it’s Vince, maybe it is, maybe he’s changed his mindset. The thing I noticed with Vince was Vince didn’t care when someone came in, it was about ratings. It didn’t matter what the organization looked like because he could always somewhere down the line get the organization to look good from an angle. But to come in there and actually have him (Lesnar) destroy people from the MMA world. I think that Vince, his mind thought is yeah I mean come on I control this guy. I could have him come in here and crush 20 guys in a row, build up for a big PPV match then have John Cena or Visit Wrestling Inc.The Rock or The Undertaker or somebody come in and have this big payday and have them beat Brock Lesnar and now you’re back on top again. It didn’t make sense for you not to tuck your ego away for a while and build this guy so it was that. You have control over the final storyline. You have the pencil in your hand, so you can write the ending to this story however you want.”

As a part of WWE’s pro-social initiatives celebrating WrestleMania® 30 in New Orleans, the auction ran from March 31 through April 8 on charitybuzz.com, and featured unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences with WWE Superstars and other sports and entertainment celebrities. In addition to the online auction, a red carpet party featuring a live auction emceed by comedian, producer and star of the hit comedy A Haunted Mansion 2, Marlon Wayans was held at the New Orleans Museum of Art during WrestleMania Week.

TNA To Debut New Stable

As seen on TNA’s Sacrifice pay-per-view, Knux is bringing a stable back with him to Impact Wrestling. The updated bio for Knux on TNA’s website reads like this:

“Debuting in TNA IMPACT WRESTLING as a member of the Aces and Eights outlaw biker gang, Knux was one of the top enforcers for the group. With the Aces now gone from TNA and the star on his own, Knux is making a comeback – but first he had to return home to see his family.”

The group will be made up of Knux, his sister Rebel, Crazzy Steve and The Freak. No word yet on who will be playing The Freak, but Crazzy Steve is Canadian wrestler Steve “Crazzy Steve” Scott, who competed in a local TNA Gut Check competition back in 2012. Rebel is rumored to be independent women’s wrestler Justine Silver but that’s not confirmed.
