AJ Styles won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship today when he defeated the current champion Kazuchika Okada at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s “Wrestling Dontaku” PPV event that aired this morning.

Styles won when Yujiro Takahashi, a stablemate in CHAOS with Okada, turned on Okada and joined the Bullet Club. The Bullet Club distracted the referee, and Takahashi ran in and hit his finisher on Okada. AJ then hit a brainbuster and then the Styles Clash to pick up the victory.

Chris Jericho On “The Streak”, CM Punk, Return To WWE, More

Source: Digital Spy

Digital Spy has a great interview with Chris Jericho, who was promoting Fozzy’s appearance at the Download festival in June. Here are a few highlights:

The Undertaker’s streak ending:

“I loved it, I thought it was great. It was a legitimate shock, it got everybody talking. I think the right guy got it, if you’re going from a credibility standpoint, and if you’re going from a believability standpoint. As much as people and fans and journalists want to believe that it’s the case, I’m not sure if Undertaker had too many matches left in him. Maybe he doesn’t want to wrestle again. Maybe he knew that he couldn’t take any more. It’s a big, physical task to wrestle as it is, and once a year is hard. I wouldn’t want to come and wrestle just once a year. That’s even harder than wrestling 200 times a year, because your body’s not used to it. And the older you get, the harder it gets, the more the aches and pains kick in.

“Maybe The Undertaker decided that, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’. And much to the fans’ chagrin, who wish that we would wrestle until the day we die at 90 years old and explode into a puff of dust in the ring, sometimes you’ve got to make that decision. If the time was now, Brock was the right guy for that day, and I thought it was amazing. And I would have hated it – hated it – if Undertaker would have retired without losing. I think that would have been a horrible way to go, I’m really happy that he lost The Streak.”

If CM Punk should return to WWE:

“I don’t know, man, who knows, right? That’s something that only he can answer for sure. To me, if he hasn’t come back already, then… I left the WWE for two-and-a-half years in 2005. The only difference was I left when my contract was up, but I disappeared too, because I just was over it. I couldn’t take it anymore, I wasn’t interested in being there, I was getting miserable, so I know how he feels. I had no intention of coming back, and after two-and-a-half years I watched Shawn Michaels vs John Cena at WrestleMania 23 and that inspired me to want to come back, but it took two-and-a-half years to get there.

“So my answer is, ‘I don’t know’, but I just know how I was when I did the same thing. It took a long time for me to be able to come back, and I was probably the same age as Punk is now too, so maybe he’s going through the same thing and after a few years he’ll come back.”

If he plans to return to WWE:

“I spoke to them in November about coming back in January, but neither of us could really agree on what it was I would be doing, and not in a bad way. If I’m going to come back, what am I going to be doing at WrestleMania? Let’s see, we’ve got Batista coming back, we’ve got Brock Lesnar coming back, we’ve got Undertaker coming back, we’ve got Hulk Hogan coming back, we’ve got the ascension of Bray Wyatt, we’ve got the ascension of The Shield, Cesaro’s ready to go and Daniel Bryan’s ready to go. Where do I fit in?

“…We have a great relationship, but if it doesn’t work for both of us, then it won’t happen. When the time comes where it does, then it will. It’s as simple as that.”

Jericho also discussed Daniel Bryan and if his title reign will last, Sting possible signing with WWE, WCW, Paul Heyman and more. You can check out the full interview by clicking here.

Rousey Has Fighter On Her Radar, Cerrone’s Next Fight, Rashad Evans Update

0

– Donald Cerrone will have to wait a little while longer than he prefers to fight again, as “Cowboy” has agreed to meet Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night 45. The Press of Atlantic City first reported the fight for the main event role.
Cerrone (23-6-1) submitted Edson Barboza last month, earning his ninth fight-night bonus and his third straight win overall. The 31-year-old was mentioned as a possible opponent for Khabib Nurmagomedov, but he will fight Miller instead.

“I told Dana that I’d fight anyone, anytime,” Cerrone said. “I’m excited to fight a guy like Jim because he always brings it.”

Miller (24-4) has six fight-night bonuses to his credit and is coming off a submission victory over Yancy Medeiros. He is unbeaten in his last four, going 3-0 with one no-contest.

“I’m very excited to fight ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone,” Miller said. “He’s a game fighter and I like tough fights. Like me, he likes to put on a good show.”

– Ronda Rousey saw first-hand what Bethe Correia can do, and the UFC female bantamweight champion is impressed. Correia defeated Jessamyn Duke at UFC 172 recently, making a name for herself with the win and her post-fight actions.

Correia made the “Four Horsemen” symbol with her hand, before bending one finger down. Rousey, Duke, Shayna Baszler and Marina Shafir call themselves the “Four Horsewomen,” and Correia wanted to serve notice that she is coming after all of them.

“It’s smart,” said Rousey, during a recent podcast with Brendan Schaub (thanks to MMAjunkie.com for transcribing). “That’s what they needed to do. The girls are (expletive) taking a cue by getting people interested.”

Rousey feels that Baszler will meet Correia next, and that the fight is a no-lose situation for her. Rousey’s next opponent is Alexis Davis, but Correia could vault herself into contention if she can finish off a second teammate of the champ.

“Shayna’s UFC debut is either going to be a huge win for Shayna or this girl is going to be still undefeated,” Rousey said. “And I’m goign to have a huge title fight because this girl is going to have fought both of my girls and is coming after me. That’s a storyline. That’s Shayna’s storyline right now. And either she beats (Correia) and moves on and has a bigger name, or it moves on to be my storyline.”

– Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans is targeting a return to the Octagon before the end of the year, according to a report recently on “UFC Tonight.” Evans suffered a serious knee injury in the final days of his prep for a fight with Daniel Cormier.

Evans (21-3-1) has won two straight and is 6-2 in his last eight overall. The lone losses came via decision to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and UFC champion Jon Jones.

One fighter “Suga” will not be matched up with is his current Blackzilians training partner, Anthony Johnson. Evans insisted that he will not fight a close friend, despite “Rumble” moving his way up the UFC rankings with his recent victory over Phil Davis.

Wrestling News 5/2/14: Flair at Extreme Rules, Prince Devitt, Tough Enough, More

0

Source: PWInsider Elite

– There’s been some speculation about Ric Flair appearing at Sunday’s WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view to continue the angle from Monday’s RAW with The Shield and Evolution. Flair is headed to California for an autograph signing at a Frank & Son Collectibles show on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. According to someone close to Flair, his itinerary for the weekend has him flying straight from California back home to Atlanta, with no stop in New Jersey for Extreme Rules. WWE could always request Flair at the last minute but as of this afternoon, he’s not scheduled.

– As noted, WWE confirmed during yesterday’s earnings call that Tough Enough will be returning on the WWE Network this year. Tough Enough trainer Bill DeMott tweeted the following:

“The news is out @WWEToughEnough is coming to @WWENetwork – to say I am waiting for the call would be an understatement! #nxtmeansbusiness”

– Word going around on the new season of WWE Tough Enough on the WWE Network is that it will be filmed at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando and will likely feature guys in developmental that aren’t regulars on TV.

– USA Today has an article up with Nikki Bella talking about playing soccer in school and other random non-wrestling topics. She was asked if pro wrestlers are the best athletes and replied with the following:
“No, I’d have to say football players are the best athletes. You have to run, be strong, be agile and have great hand-eye coordination.”

– As noted yesterday, WWE’s website has a new article up on ECW Original Sabu. There will also be a Sabu feature in an upcoming issue of WWE Magazine.

– Prince Devitt is done with New Japan Pro Wrestling and still has a standing offer from WWE. It’s said that Devitt joining WWE isn’t a “dead issue” yet.

– Former WWE and TNA talent Low Ki is reportedly in the final stages of signing a new deal with TNA. The deal will see him work for TNA as a wrestler in the X Division and as an agent for X Division matches. The hope is that Ki will improve that division. Low Ki worked TNA’s One Night Only: Xtravaganza pay-per-view tapings earlier this month and had a very successful night.

– Apparently Summer Rae has been doing some of her own stunt work on the set of WWE Studios’ The Marine 4. Summer noted earlier this week that she was having fun with “fights, blood and dirt.” Regarding her stunt work, one of the people working on set with her tweeted:
“R U Kidding! You killed it today! The real deal, a power house! Don’t mess with this lady!”

– WrestlingDVDNews.com reports that the documentary portion on WWE’s upcoming Batista DVD and Blu-ray will be centered around his 2014 return and the Royal Rumble victory, rather than re-telling his life story. The documentary will be made up of new footage from when Batista had WWE cameras following him around this year and interviews with Batista and other stars.

Shawn Michaels Talks Undertaker’s Response to Streak Ending, More

0

Thanks to WrestlingINC.com reader Scott H. for sending in this report from Shawn Michaels’ Q&A in Manchester, England earlier this week. We will have more highlights from the Q&A tomorrow:

I had the extreme pleasure of attending “A night with Shawn Michaels” in Manchester earlier this week. This event, to me and most in attendance, was like having a piece of WrestleMania carved up and put on a stage right in front of you. Shawn was very honest, very open and answered every question that the 400+ fans in attendance asked.

Here are some notes from memory. My apologies if they are not as detailed as they should be, this was Shawn Michaels after all, and I was in the same room as him!

Shawn talked about being at WrestleMania 30 in the gorilla position. He said that he was as shocked as anyone that Undertaker lost, and that he texted ‘Taker afterwards to see if he was OK. ‘Taker responded that he is OK, and he will sue when he finds out the number of the bus that hit him!

Shawn seems to have a nice relationship with ‘Taker and mentioned some outdoor projects they might do in the future.

Shawn spoke nicely about Bret Hart, and their relationship seems to be in a better place than it has been for a long time. Shawn was asked to compare the Kliq Incident with the Montreal Screw job. He said that the screwjob had more of an impact on the business because everyone knew about it, including the casual fan.

He describes the mood of WrestleMania 14, the bad place he was in and the way he was acting all day. He said that even up to bell time, nobody really knew if he was going to do business, not even “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. He told a great story about Mike Tyson being in boxing mode backstage when practicing the punch for the end of the match.

When asked if The Undertaker was at the gorilla position during the WrestleMania 14 main event in case he didn’t do the job for Austin, Shawn answered no, and said that it was just internet folklore again that had created that story.

This was a man who I have worshiped from an early age. They say you should never meet your hero, but if Shawn Michaels is your hero, like me, then you are more than OK meeting this icon.
