WWE Monday Night Raw 5/5/14 from Times Union Center in Albany, NY

1. We kick things off with the 20-Man Man Battle Royal for the United States Championship. Dean Ambrose is forced to defend against 19 opponents at the same time… Everyone enters to the Raw music. Participants include Goldust, Cody Rhodes, Mark Henry, R-Truth, Kofi Kingston, The Big Show, Santino, Heath Slater, Curtis Axel, Ryback, Titus O’Neil, Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus, Zack Ryder, Jack Swagger, Xavier Woods, Sin Cara, Damien Sandow, and Fandango. Early eliminations include Xavier, Zack Ryder, R-Truth, Titus O’Neil, and Sin Cara in that order. Big Show presses Cara out onto the other men already eliminated who apparently stood there for several minutes waiting for the spot… Poor Damien Sandow is out next thanks to an accident from Heath Slater. With the job guy field weeded out, we take a break just when things are getting good… We’ve got 14 left in the ring… I hope they don’t come back with half the guys eliminated…

Back from break, and Heath Slater was eliminated on the WWE App.Big Show chokeslams Mark Henry. Brogue Kick by Sheamus on Big Show and the entire ring eliminates Big Show!!! And the entire ring eliminates Mark Henry next!!! Kofi Kingston tries some of his cutesy magic but Dean Ambrose tosses Fandango and Kingston. Cody Rhodes dumps his brother Goldust, Rybaxel then dumps Cody. Santino uses the Cobra to eliminate Ziggler and the crowd shits all over it…

Rybaxel dump Santino thankfully. Down to 5 with Ambrose, Sheamus, Rybaxel, and Swagger. Ryback lays out Sheamus, and then goes at it with Ambrose. Rybaxel tosses Ambrose to the apron, but he ducks his head in and backdrops Axel out of the match. Ryback and Axel both fight on the apron, but Ambrose eliminates Ryback!!!

Swagger goes after Ambrose, but Dean dumps him too!!! Ambrose turns right around into a BROGUE KICK!!!! And the crowd craps all over Sheamus… Sheamus dumps Ambrose with ease to win the title and scores some heat for his upcoming heel turn… Match went over 15:00. A shame that’s how such a long reign came to an end, but it helps Sheamus, and believe me, he needed the help….

[spacer height=”20px”]

– The Shield console Dean Ambrose after the match, until HHH makes his way out… HHH announces that later tonight, the Shield will have to meet the Wyatt Family in the main event… no complaints there, though they’re starting to reach when it comes to six-mans…

-Commercial Break-

– Adam Rose… Tonight… I can’t wait… There was a lot of sarcasm behind that by the way…

– Renee Young with Sheamus in the back. He says he’s just been spinning his wheels since his return, but now he finally has some traction…

– Brie Bella and Daniel Bryan in the locker room. Stephanie McMahon enters with some more false sympathy. There’s a Kane mask hanging on the wall for no reason… Lame segment as usual, this story is almost as bad as Kane’s work…

– RVD on his way to the ring to wrestle Cesaro…. Next….

-Commercial Break-

– It’s Paul Heyman with the usual Brock beat Taker crap… And out comes Cesaro…

2. Rob Van Dam vs. Cesaro (w/Paul Heyman). RVD sporting a shiner from last night… Cesaro with some power early on but RVD comes back with some usual spots that send Cesaro to the floor… RVD tries a dive, but Cesaro blocks it and takes over momentarily. RVD comes back with more of his usual shtick and Cesaro back to the floor… RVD lands a somersault senton dive to the floor. Back in the ring, Cesaro takes over as the fans want “CM Punk”. RVD tries a counter, but Cesaro clotheslines him to the floor, and that means it’s time for a commercial break!

After the break, RVD breaks a rest hold, per the usual “back from break” routine. RVD surprises Cesaro with a couple of quick pins for 2… RVD tries a reverse body block from the middle rope but runs right into a EUROPEAN UPPERCUT for 2… As this match continues a friend asks me how slow a match would be between RVD and Kane… I don’t want to think about it… Between the Punk and Boring chants in this match, I hope people now see how slow RVD has gotten.

RVD tries a monkey flip but Cesaro hangs on. RVD tries a a top rope spot but Cesaro knocks him off the ropes and Van Dam gets his leg caught in the ropes and Cesaro takes advantage, beating on RVD until the referee reaches a 5 count for the crappy DQ finish in 12:00.

Dear God, PLEASE don’t bring this crap back for another PPV… They keep giving guys like Bryan and Cesaro the wrong opponents…

– Albany… The Wyatts are here!

-Commercial Break-

– We return with the Wyatt Family in the ring under a spotlight. Wyatt is finally somebody after beating Cena last night. He mocks Cena fearing a little boy singing. Wyatt admits to being a monster, but he admits it. He does this for the children, for the starving, for the outcasts. Bray Wyatt says he is rising, and Cena is falling. Bray says Cena now stands alone, and that the children stand with Wyatt. The fans will remember him not as a monster, but for what he truly is… A GOD!

The fans sing along… He’s got the whole world in his hands…

Quick first hour review… The show got off to a good start, the Battle Royal was up to BR standards, and giving Sheamus the win was the best decision when you think about it… Sheamus gets a much needed belt, Ambrose saves face with his hard fought battle, and Sheamus is left with heat to help along his upcoming heel turn. Next was Cesaro vs. RVD. Seemed like we were in for a pretty good first hour until RVD stunk up the joint in a match that went far too long and had a crappy finish, presumably to set up another unwanted rematch. Wyatt Family promo was good, but the RVD match really hurt the first hour. Still the first half hour was good… On to hour 2…

-Commercial Break-

3. Cody Rhodes (w/Goldust) vs. Ryback (w/Curtis Axel). 08 Back and forth, Ryback misses a clothesline and flies out of the ring. Back inside, Ryback drops Cody throat first across the top rope and works him over… Ryback in control for a good duration of the match before Cody counters a powerbomb attempt by slipping out and landing the Disaster Kick! Cody with a springboard dropkick. Rhodes goes to the top rope when Curtis Axel drives Goldust into the ring post, which causes Cody to lose his balance, and Ryback hooks Shell Shock for the win in 6:00.

After the match Goldust aids Cody…

– Backstage Brie Bella is with Daniel Bryan. The Lights go out and a Kane mask lights up… CORNY…. They leave the locker room and run into Stephanie… For some reason they trust Stephanie to bring Brie’s car in to pick her up… Because THAT makes sense…

-Commercial Break-

– Dear God, there’s a Cinco de Mayo celebration in the ring with Los Matadores & El Torito. The Matadors have a ridiculously strong stereotypical “Mexican” accent. In their attempt to be funny, they fail… Miserably. As if it couldn’t get worse, the 3MB make their way out… Is this “feud” ever going to end? Boy they love to beat their “comedy” feuds to death… 3MB want to call a truce, lots of bad puns and the announcers crapping on the segment, doesn’t help anything… Torito offers Hornswoggle some candy as a sign of peace, but Swoggle knocks the candy out of his hand.

Horny and Torito go at it while the Matadores clear 3MB from the ring… Torito then with an airplane spin on Swoggle and gores him in the butt… THIS would make a great time for a monster to come out and kill everyone… PLEASE… But it doesn’t happen…

-Commercial Break-

– BOLIEVE!

4. Kofi Kingston vs. Alexander Rusev (w/Lana). Poor Kofi is next in line for Rusev who has now resides in Russia. Vladimir Putin image on the screen to garner heat. Vince loves that foreign tension. Kofi tries a fast attack… It doesn’t work… Overhead belly to belly throw on Kingston. Kofi fights back with kicks and a dropkick takes Rusev into the corner. Kofi with a flying reverse body block off the top rope takes Rusev down for a second… Rusev comes back for a fall away slam but Kingston lands on his feet and goes to the top for a flying body block, but he’s caught and Rusev lands the swinging sidewalk slam, before finishing things off with the Accolade (camel clutch) for the win in 3:00.

– In the garage, Daniel Bryan puts Brie Bella in the car and they start to drive away, but Stephanie startles them and informs Bryan that he has to wrestle right now or he will be stripped of the WWE Title. Bryan and Brie leave the car. I don’t know what is worse, this hokey garbage or the “Little Johnny” of the Wyatt family… Just give Bryan a good wrestling match, we don’t need this garbage. If they wanna bury his heat, they’ve finally figured it out.

-Commercial Break-

5. WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan (w/Brie Bella) vs. Alberto Del Rio. Wow, I know he was just on TV last week, but how sad is it I forgot ADR even existed until right now. They need that second big title back in the picture, it’s killing their semi main event stars. Back and forth stuff by both to start, Bryan botches a back flip out of the corner, but drops Del Rio with a clothesline anyway. Bryan with some YES kicks, but Del Rio ducks the big one and hits the Back Stabber and sends Bryan to the floor. ADR sends Bryan into the barricade for that always popular commercial break!

While we have advertising, I just want to say this Brie Bella incorporated into the storylines crap is also just that… crap… Sticking a valet with Bryan is useless and hurts his character, which I assume is what the higher ups are going for… They’ll teach Bryan if it’s the last thing they do!

Back from break, it’s the token “chinlock returning from break” hold. Bryan breaks free, but ADR counters with a German Suplex for 2… Crowd is semi-dead. They’re still making noise for spots, but in general there’s no heat for Del Rio’s offense. Bryan comes back and both men go down. Trading punch routine turns into kicks. Del Rio charges Bryan in the corner but gets drop toe holded face first into the middle buckle. Bryan with more kick, but ADR takes right back over. Alberto tries a Superplex, but Bryan knocks him off and lands a diving headbutt for 2…

ADR knocked outside, Bryan hits a crappy suicide dive that barely connects because Del Rio doesn’t want to take it. ADR thrown back inside, Bryan goes up top but takes an enzuigiri that knocks him off. Del Rio calls for the cross armbreaker, but Bryan counters with a tilt-a-whirl thingy into the Crippler Crossface. ADR tapes after 15:30….

BOOM PYRO… It’s Kane’s music… But where’s Kane??? The cowardly Daniel Bryan and Brie flee for their car…. BUT THE CAR WON”T START!!! Bryan looks under the hood of the car, but when he shuts the hood… KANE IS IN THE BACKSEAT!!! THIS IS TERRIBLE… Brie starts screaming, and screaming, and screaming… It’s absolutely horrible and annoying. Kane and Bryan fight outside the car. Bryan gets in the car, but Kane climbs on top… Bryan drives off and Kane falls off the car, best bump he’s taken in years…

Bryan sees Kane fall and he gets out of the car to check on him….. Kane sits up… More screaming from Brie… THIS IS ABSOLUTELY TERRINBLE… Bryan jumps back in the car and takes off like a coward as Kane chases after them…

Ya know, between the kid in the Cena match last night and this entire Kane/Bryan crap fest from tonight, the WWE has used every shitty horror movie cliché in the business. This is the kind of garbage that it’s just like…. Who looks at this and thinks it’s a good idea, then who are the assholes that okay it… I’ll leave it to you to fill those answers in…

Recap of hour two… Well believe it or not, but Ryback has been improving since being tagged with Axel, I think they bring the best out in each other or something.. Anyway, the Cody/Ryback match could have probably been a little better, too much Ryback offense on the beat down side of things. The 3MB/Matadores segment was probably one of their worst. Rusev squash was decent, I wish they’d do more for Kofi. Bryan vs. ADR was perfectly fine for a TV match, wasn’t great, I think they could have done a lot better, but for TV it was fine. Everything that followed with Kane was absolutely ridiculous and I hope I never hear Brie Bella scream again. TEERIBLE.

-Commercial Break-

– Adam Rose is still to come… Completely forgot… And who’s bright idea is it to debut someone in the third hour when things start to drag? That’s really going to help someone get over…

6. IC Champion Bad News Barrett vs. Big E. Wade has some bad news… Where the hell was he before the Kane stuff? Like last night, the crowd behind Barrett while Big E dominates with impressive power moves. Barrett rolls to the floor, but the fans still support Wade. Big E tries a spear on the apron, but Barrett drops off and Big E smashes his shoulder into the ring post and Barrett takes over… The referee reaches an 8 count before Big E rolls back in, but we’re heading to a commercial break.

Back from break, Big E escapes that dreaded commercial chinlock but both men go down… Big E lands the belly to belly and tries the Warrior Splash but lands on Barrett’s knees. The part of the crowd that’s still alive is cheering BNB. Big E tries the Big Ending, but Barrett slides out and hits the Winds of Change for 2… More CM PUNK chants as the matches tonight are leaving a lot to be desired… Big E counters Wasteland, but Barrett counters a Big knee… Barrett tries the Bull Hammer, but Big E ducks and runs him over before spearing him through the ropes and off the apron like last night… Crowd is DEAD…. Big E back in the ring with an overhead belly to belly… A second overhead belly to belly. Big E drops his traps… Crowd boos… Big Ending, but Barrett slides out and rakes E’s eyes, then delivers the Bull Hammer for the win in 10:45. Pretty lackluster match, and crowd is almost dead…

-Commercial Break-

– A special Mothers Day Message… From Mr. T… We see clips from the Hall of Fame, it’s turned into a song… They should have used Autotune… Happy Mothers Day Fools…

It’s time for the debut of Adam Rose…

7. Adam Rose vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb). Zeb cuts another funny promo, he sort of wakes the crowd up. Zeb has a deportation list, lol… Cesaro, Emma, Sheamus, Santino, Paige, Heyman for the hell of it… Apparently Barrett can stay… You see Adam Rose is foreign. Adam Rose is led to the ring by his party bus people, including the rabbit… The Adam Rose music hits while his groupies dance, and the crowd doesn’t give TWO SHITS…. Rose falls off the ropes and into his groupies arms… Michael Cole tries to put it over, but the crowd just doesn’t give a shit… at all… They’ve been dead a while… Fans are singing the song anyway, lol… Adam Rose offers Zeb his half eaten sucker… He tells Zeb not to be a lemon, to be a rosebud…. Swagger tries to attack Rose, but Rose backdrops him out of the ring… And his music hits???? WTF??? I thought this was a match???? Now everyone dances in the ring… That was…. ummm…. bad. Yeah…. Bad…

– Never mind the fact that the gimmick is complete crap, and the segment was horse poop… I’ve got to ask, whose brilliant idea was it to take a BRAND NEW character who needs as much crowd involvement as possible for their gimmick, and then debut them in the final half hour of a 3 hour show? The third hour always drags, the crowd is hardly alive at this point, and now this guy gets sent out there to do the match before the main event? So when it’s not over they blame him? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of this gimmick, I like the Leo Kruger stuff I’ve seen on youtube much better, but still if you’re going to bring a guy up from developmental, why put them in a position to flop? That’s just stupid business…

-Commercial Break-

Since the last match turned out not to be a match, this is now match #7….

7. The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family. A wild 6 man brawl in and out of the ring to start… Rollins ends up taking some heat at the expense of the Wyatts…. Rollins hits Harper with a pele kick and tags in Ambrose… Dean takes Harper to the floor and hits him with a dive… Ambrose back inside with Rowan. Dean takes Rowan down with a stiff clothesline and locks in the FIGURE FOUR!!! The Wyatts look to break it up but the Shield come in, and we have both teams at a stalemate as we take a commercial….

Back from break, and Ambrose is taking the heat. It just crossed my mind, it is pretty cool that we’ve got 6 of the newer generation out here headlining Raw… Somehow Ambrose manages to get Harper and Rowan on a floor… A tag to Rollins and Seth hiits a flying somersault dive onto both men. Back inside, Rollins with some more impressive stuff including a running shooting star on the mat…Rollins goes up top but gets knocked to the floor by Harper…Now it’s Harper with a suicide dive on Rollins… Harper wrecks the announce table for the fun of it…

Hard to describe the crowd, one minute they’re into it, the next they quiet down… I think the crowd would be dead if it weren’t for the good stuff these guys are giving us… The Wyatts back on top of Rollins, taking turns beating him down… Superkick by Harper on Rollins gets 2 when Ambrose breaks up the cover… Ambrose gets taken out after being thrown across the announce table, while Harper continues to dominate Rollins in the ring… Harper tries a superplex, but is knocked off… Rollins hits Harper with a top rope flying knee and they’re both down… Hot tags to Bray and Reigns!!! Roman all over the Wyatts, dropkick to Wyatt on the apron. The Wyatts try to outnumber Roman, but the rest of the Shield come in….

Ambrose and Rollins take Rowan and Harper out of the ring and land stereo suicide dives sending the Wyatts over the announce table… Back inside, Roman Reigns with the SUPEREMAN PUNCH on Bray! And the Shield set up for the triple powerbomb, but EVOLUTIONS MUSIC HITS!!!

Rollins & Ambrose with stereo dives out of the ring onto Rowan, Harper, Orton, and Batista… HHH hits the ring but gets met with a SUPERMAN PUNCH from Reigns… And this match isn’t even over!!! Reigns turns around into a flying body stack from Bray Wyatt, and Sister Abigail!!! Wyatt pins Reigns in 18:05….

After the match Evolution attack the Shield… Rollins takes a wicked looking suspension DDT from Orton… Batista spinebusters Ambrose into the steel steps… HHH tries to pedigree Reigns, but Roman backdrops his way out!! But Orton with an RKO on Roman… and then a Pedigree by HHH, and Evolution stand over the Shield… Batista is pissed from last night and lands a Batista Bomb on Reigns to finish things….

WWE Raw “Backstage Pass” Post Show

– Recap of what we just saw with the Shield, Wyatts, and Evolution…

– Renee Young is with Evolution. HHH says the war has just begun. Orton says the same exact thing. Batista calls it Evolution Justice..

– Discussion of the US Title Battle Royal and Sheamus going over…

– Natalya on the panel is getting annoying now. She just keeps using clichés to answer questions, and repeats some of them more than once as her answers.

– Bryan/Kane crap is discussed. The panel has to discuss this as if it was a serious angle. The spend a whole 3 minutes on this feud, so I guess that says what they think about it… I don’t ever want to see this segment again…

– Discussion of the Wyatt vs. Cena feud. Cena wasn’t even on the show and he gets as much time as Bryan/Kane… lol… What else can you say except poor D-Bry…

– John Cena will respond to Bray Wyatts comments from earlier tonight on the Main Event tomorrow…

And we’re done for this week.

Fighting Spirit Review: DDT “Sweet Dreams!” on 1/26/14

0

Date: January 26th, 2014
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Announced Attendance: 1,929 (Super No Vacancy)

It is time for another DDT review! These reviews show my dedication to the quest to review all events, as comedy promotions are the hardest ones to review. DDT has some skilled wrestlers for sure, but some of the comedy I admittedly don’t really get. But this is a big event as there are three titles up for grabs and their big titles tend to be more ‘normal’ matches so I am sure they will be entertaining. Here is the full card:

– Antonio Honda and Daisuke Sasaki vs. Keisuke Ishii and Takao Soma
– Iron Man Heavy Metal Championship, Battle Royal with the following participants: Masa Takanashi, MIKAMI, Guanchulo, Hoshitango, Yasu Urano, Tomomitsu Matsunaga, Konosuke Takeshita, Kazuki Hirata, Gota Ihashi, Michael Nakazawa, and DJ Nira
– Makoto Oishi and Saki Akai vs. Toru Owashi and Yoshiko
– Danshoku Dino vs. KUDO
– Sanshiro Takagi and Hikaru Sato vs. Yukio Sakaguchi and Akito
– KO-D Tag Team Championship: Kodaka and Miyamoto vs. Kota Ibushi and Omega vs. Takeshita and Endo
– KO-D Openweight Championship: HARASHIMA vs. Shigehiro Irie

Second DDT event of 2014 to make TV, let’s see how they do.

Antonio Honda and Daisuke Sasaki vs. Keisuke Ishii and Takao Soma

Joined In Progress, as Honda gets the hot tag from Sasaki.  Honda punches down Ishii and then Soma, Ishii attacks Honda from behind, Irish whip, but Honda ducks the lariat and hits a series of punches.  Ishii chops Honda back, kick and more punches from Honda but Ishii blocks one and chops Honda hard in the chest.  Ishii picks up Honda and goes for a suplex but Honda punches him off.  Waistlock by Honda, reversed by Ishii and Ishii hits a hurricanrana.  Punch to the stomach by Ishii and he hits a Fisherman Suplex.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Ishii picks up Honda and goes for the Killswitch, but Honda blocks it and hits a reverse DDT.  Honda tags in Sasaki, Sasaki goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving lariat.  He then knocks Soma off the apron before picking up Ishii, Irish whip, and Sasaki hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker.  Honda comes back in the ring, they pick up Ishii, double Irish whip to the corner and they both hit running strikes.  Honda sits up Ishii but Soma comes up from behind and drops a metal tin onto Sasaki’s head from the top turnbuckle.  Ishii gets the metal bin and hits Honda out of the ring with it, and he tags in Soma.  Ishii and Soma pick up Sasaki, double Irish whip, and they both kick Sasaki before hitting a DDT/Face Crusher combination.  Superkick by Soma, cover, but it gets a two count.  Soma picks up Sasaki and goes for a Schwein but Sasaki rolls up Soma for a two count.  Soma charges Sasaki, Sasaki catches him but Soma gets away and hits a DDT.  Ishii comes back in the ring, he picks up Sasaki and tries to throw him onto the metal tin, but Sasaki gets out of it.  Honda gets back in the ring and they hit a double side leg sweep onto Ishii, landing on Soma.  Honda grabs Soma and slams him in front of the corner, then Sasaki comes off the top turnbuckle with a diving elbow drop.  Cover by Sasaki but it gets a two count.  Sasaki quickly applies the Crippler Crossface, and Soma has no choice but to submit.  Your winners:  Antonio Honda and Daisuke Sasaki

Match Thoughts:  We only caught the second half of the match, but I guess if you have to join a match in the middle it may as well be at the hot tag.  What we saw was good, although a little goofy at times.  Cutting out the opening work probably made the match seem better since it was fast paced, but what we saw was certainly fine.  Score:  5.0

Masa Takanashi, DJ Nira, Gota Ihashi, Guanchulo, Kazuki Hirata, Hoshitango, Takeshita, Michael Nakazawa, MIKAMI,  Matsunaga, and Yasu Urano

This is a Battle Royal for the Iron Man Heavy Metal Championship.  The match is ten minutes, the belt can change hands multiple times during the match and the last person with the belt after 10 minutes is the winner.  We pick up mid-way through the match, with Takanashi still being the champion.  Matsunaga puts him in a headscissors, then Guanchulo puts him in a headscissors, Ihashi follows suit, and Ihashi is the last one to join, so five wrestlers are in a row linked by headscissors.  Matsunaga makes Takanashi submit, making him the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  But Matsunaga then submits to Guanchulo, and Guanchulo is declared the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  Ihashi makes Guanchulo submit to become the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion, but then Ihashi submits to Hirata, so Hirata is the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  Still with me?  Hirata gets up to celebrate but Nakazawa rubs his underwear into Hirata’s face, forcing Hirata to submit, making Nakazawa the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  Hoshitango comes up from behind and slams Nakazawa to the mat, he picks up Nakazawa and puts him in the Argentine Breaker.  Nakazawa submits, and Hoshitango is your new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  Matsunaga runs in the ring but Hoshitango shoulderblocks him to the mat.

Hoshitango fights off all comers, clearing the ring, until Urano gets back in and raises Hoshitango’s hand.  Only to then rake him in the eyes.  Irish whip by Urano to the corner, reversed, but Urano avoids the Body Avalanche and rolls up Hoshitango for the three count.  Urano is the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  Urano bails out of the ring and runs away from everyone, going up into the stands.  Takanashi chases him down but Urano spits water in his face as they make their way back towards ringside.  Urano is still holding the belt as he continues running from Takanashi, but Takanashi grabs him and slides Urano back in the ring.  Enzigieri by Urano to Takanashi and he puts him in the Octopus Hold.  Nira comes into the ring and pushes Urano; he gets a microphone and gives one to Urano before kicking Urano in the leg.  They jaw a bit, headbutt by Nira to Urano and Takanashi rolls up Urano for the three count.  Takanashi is now the new Iron Man Heavy Metal Champion.  Takanashi bails out of the ring and fights off everyone, hitting various wrestlers with the title belt.  He rolls back in the ring but he sees Urano and bails again, but he is attacked on the outside.  He rolls back in as everyone tries to cover him at the same time, but the 10 minute time limit has expired.  Your (final) champion:  Masa Takanashi

Match Thoughts:  Way too many wrestlers to really be a good match, these types of matches can be fun but with nine wrestlers it was just too much.  Most of them disappeared for the majority of the match, and aside from a few of the goofier spots getting a chuckle there wasn’t really much of a point to this one.  Luckily half of it was cut as it picked up at the five minute mark before the first submission victory, I have no idea what the first five minutes were like.  For which I am thankful.  Score:  3.5

Makoto Oishi and Saki Akai vs. Toru Owashi and Yoshiko

The men start things off as Oishi faces Owashi.  Owashi wants to lock knuckles but Oishi is hesitant, he finally does so and Owashi twists on his arm before tagging in Yoshiko.  Yoshiko rakes Oishi in the eyes, snapmare by Oishi and he hits a fist drop.  Oishi tags in Akai, and Akai stomps Yoshiko in the back.  Akai applies a stretch hold but Yoshiko inches to the ropes and forces a break.  Stomp to the back by Akai, Irish whip, and Akai hits a tilt-a-whirl headscissors into an armbar.  Yoshiko shoves her off and then grinds her boot in her face.  Yoshiko tags in Owashi, elbows by Akai to Owashi and she chops him with little success.  Owashi goes to chop Akai but Oishi jumps in so that he is chopped instead.  Owashi grabs Akai and throws her into the corner.  Owashi tags in Yoshiko, Irish whip by Yoshiko to Akai and she hits a body avalanche.  Yoshiko rakes Akai’s face with her boot and then hits a running boot scrape to the head.  We jump ahead as now Yoshiko is in the ring with Oishi.  Irish whip by Yoshiko to the corner but Oishi kicks her back, Oishi goes up to the second turnbuckle and hits a tornado DDT.  Cover, but Owashi breaks it up.

Oishi elbows Owashi out of the ring and stomps on Yoshiko, Oishi picks up Yoshiko and shoves her in the corner.  Irish whip by Oishi, reversed, and Owashi comes in the ring to hit a lariat.  Double Irish whip to Oishi and they hit a double shoulderblock.  Yoshiko and Owashi then both go off the ropes and hit a double body press, cover, but Akai breaks it up.  They throw Akai out of the ring and go for a double chokeslam on Oishi, but he gets out of it.  Yoshiko accidentally lariats Owashi, and Oishi drops Yoshiko with a Stunner.  Oishi tags in Akai, Akai goes up top and jumps off but Owashi catches her by the neck.  Owashi goes for a chokeslam but Akai hits a hurricanrana.  Yoshiko attacks Akai from behind and stomps her to the mat, she picks up Akai and puts her on her shoulders, but Akai gets free.  Chop by Akai in the corner, Irish whip, and Akai hits a big boot onto Yoshiko.  Akai goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits the diving crossbody, cover, but it gets a two count.  Akai waits for Yoshiko to get up and kicks her, she goes off the ropes and hits another big boot but Yoshiko doesn’t go down.  She goes off the ropes again and Yoshiko hits a lariat, cover, but Oishi breaks it up.  Owashi throws Oishi out of the ring while Yoshiko headbutts Akai, cover, but Akai barely gets a shoulder up.  Yoshiko goes up to the second turnbuckle and hits a diving senton, cover, and she picks up the three count.  Your winners:  Toru Owashi and Yoshiko

Match Thoughts:  This match was definitely rough around the edges.  Akai has not been wrestling for long and she is incredibly…. awkward.   About half of the things she did in this match just didn’t flow well at all and she was a sharp contrast to Yoshiko who is very solid.  The Owashi and Akai parts in particular were off as you could tell Owashi didn’t actually want to hurt her (Yoshiko and Oishi didn’t have that issue since Yoshiko is bigger anyway).  Besides Yoshiko no one really came out of this looking particularly good, just a mess in general.  Score:  3.0

Danshoku Dino vs. KUDO

Match Thoughts:  I wonder if KUDO in his life has been kissed more by Dino than anyone else, you’d think it would hurt the effect of the move after the hundredth time.  Dino matches are kinda fascinating as you know what is going to happen and he has been doing this gimmick for a decade. and yet here he is still doing it.  KUDO is a quality wrestler and when he was on offense the match was fun, his kicks are so on point.  With Dino you know what you are getting but at least he was paired up against a skilled wrestler so it was still a decent match to watch.  Score:  5.5

Match Thoughts:  This was Sato’s “farewell” match as he was leaving the promotion to become a Freelancer.   A solid match, mostly a mat-based/striking affair with occasional flair from Akito.  I liked the leg work on Sato but wasn’t a fan of the dueling ankle holds towards the end…. nothing had been done to Akito’s leg so it didn’t fit into the match.  The cross armbreaker has been built up enough that we know it can end a match at any time, but generally ankle holds are not that type of submission.  Anyway, perfectly fine but nothing that really took it to that next level.  Score:  6.0

Match Thoughts:  I’ll be honest, even though the match had its crazy moments I was expecting it to be a lot crazier when I saw who was in it and that it was a title match.  I also thought it was funny the first half of the match they pretended there were tag rules and then totally ignored them as the last five minutes Omega and Ibushi never left the ring.  Anyway I enjoyed the bulk of this match.  The beginning chop/punch/elbow battle went on for too long, I was getting a bit restless for them to get moving, but once they got moving it stayed that way until the end.  I am always impressed how fluid these matches are, how they are all always on the same page is beyond me. While there wasn’t really a ‘structure’ psychology-wise, a match like this can’t really have one as it is supposed to just be chaotic until someone gets the pin.  Overall it was fun, but not as much fun as I was hoping it would be.  Score:  6.5

(c) HARASHIMA vs. Shigehiro Irie

Match Thoughts:  This is the first match I have watched this week in any promotion that made the match really feel like a war.  It really puts over the title when the wrestlers in the title match go all out to try to win the match, and by the end both wrestlers were beaten and exhausted.  HARASHIMA was busted open hardway from a headbutt, but that didn’t stop both him and Irie continuing to throw stiff elbows and kicks for the rest of the match.  They wasted a bit of time at the beginning but once they got into the ‘I hit harder than you do’ phase of the match it only got better.  Just a great match by the end, I enjoy both of these guys a lot and wish that DDT focused more on how awesome some of their fighters really are.  Score:  8.0

Final Thoughts:

Best Match:   HARASHIMA vs. Shigehiro Irie.  The event was suffering until this match came along.  Just a great battle of attrition between two of the better wrestlers in DDT.  They may not be as flashy or ‘funny’ but they beat the crap out of each other for our amusement and were no doubt still feeling it the next day.  A well contested and heated championship match that showed how important the belt was to both of them.

MVP:   HARASHIMA.  I wonder if he will be the MVP of every DDT event I review.  It is just when I watch the promotion, he is the one that is the most memorable… he has hard strikes and is very concise with just about everything that he does, and he gives his opponents respect by really selling so that when he comes back it means something (although to be fair, I am not sure that Irie’s headbutts require any special ‘selling’ skills).  He is just a lot of fun to watch.

Overall:  Up to the main event I wasn’t really feeling this event.  There were a few solid matches, and the tag team title match was fun, but there wasn’t enough there to recommend anyone watch this show.  But the main event was really good, and in a lot of ways the opposite of the rest of the card (hard hitting, lots of passion, etc.) which probably made it seem even better.  Between the great main event and a few other fun matches on the card I think there is something here that most people would enjoy, but just skip the first half of the show.

Batista’s WWE Status In Question

0

Partial Source: F4WOnline

We noted before that the plan for WWE’s Payback pay-per-view next month was Batista vs. Daniel Bryan for the WWE World Heavyweight Title but Batista turned down and is leaving to take time off about a month early.

Coming out of Extreme Rules, nothing is settled regarding the Payback main event, it’s still “up in the air”, even though Batista got pinned in the Evolution vs. The Shield match. WWE officials are not happy at all with Batista changing their plans for Payback.

Vince McMahon still wants Batista vs. Bryan as the main event for Payback and he along with other officials are still trying to convince Batista to stay and work Bryan next month. The plan coming out of Extreme Rules is if they can’t convince Batista to work with Bryan at Payback, then they will do Kane vs. Bryan in a Buried Alive Match. F4WOnline added that Kane sitting up at the end of the Extreme Rules match with Bryan was done because WWE felt they needed that as a closing image in case they go with Kane vs. Bryan for Payback.

Even though Extreme Rules is Batista’s last advertised appearance for this current run, he will be in Albany for tonight’s RAW and could be booked in a segment for his exit with The Shield.

Renan Barao, who has not lost since his pro debut, will defend his bantamweight title against TJ Dillashaw at UFC 173 on May 24. The event, which you can see a preview for in the video above, takes place from Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Barao (32-1) became the interim UFC bantamweight champion in 2012 when he defeated Urijah Faber. He defended that title with finishes vs. Michael McDonald and Eddie Wineland before becoming the undisputed champion when he bested Faber earlier this year. Barao was scheduled to meet Dominick Cruz, but Cruz went down with another injury.

Dillashaw (9-2) was selected as Barao’s opponent after Raphael Assuncao declined the fight due to injuries. Assuncao actually defeated Dillashaw via split decision last October in Brazil.

Other UFC 173 fights include Dan Henderson vs. Daniel Cormier in a light heavyweight battle between former U.S. Olympic wrestlers, Robbie Lawler vs. Jake Ellenberger, Takeya Mizugaki vs. Francisco Rivera and Jamie Varner vs. James Krause.

– UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will see a familiar face this August when he returns to the Octagon at UFC 176, as Aldo takes on Chad Mendes for the title. The Los Angeles Times first reported the bout, which was confirmed by UFC officials.

Aldo (24-1) defeated Mendes (16-1) via first round knockout back in 2012 in Brazil. Since that loss, Mendes has reeled off five straight victories, including four via finish. He also became the first fighter to stop Clay Guida when he did so last year.

Aldo hasn’t lost since a 2005 submission defeat in his eight career bout. He has topped the likes of former UFC champion Frankie Edgar, Kenny Florian, Ricardo Lamas and Chan Sung Jung.

– Miesha Tate believes she is the perfect opponent to welcome Gina Carano back to MMA and the UFC. Tate, appearing on a recent episode of “UFC Tonight,” is coming off a decision victory over Liz Carmouche. She had lost her first two Octagon bouts to Cat Zingano and bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

“I have a list – all of the girls at 135,” said Tate, of who she wants to fight. “I’d love a fight against Gina Carano. She’s coming back and I don’t think she should go straight for the title. I also have my eyes on Holly Holm and Sarah Kaufman.”

Carano, who left the sport years ago for a career in Hollywood, has struggled in the past to make 135 pounds. UFC president Dana White cited in a previous interview that Carano told him she could make the weight, but Tate has her doubts.

“That’s the question,” she said. “She’s a big girl and she has made 135 in the past. It’s been a long layoff. If she makes the return, she’s professional and I trust she’ll make the weight.”

My thoughts on the show,
Thumbs in the middle on this one. Nothing really stands out aside from the fact that El Puerto Ricano got 7 minutes. Nothing was bad besides the MMA fight, which only lasted 20 seconds anyway. It is noteworthy as being the first official tag match between Eliminators and Gangstas that has filmed and released out of the three matches they have had thus far. No real reason to search out this show, but no reason to skip past it either.
