Jon Jones’ Next Title Defense Official For UFC 178

0

Jon Jones has agreed to defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson. Officials announced the championship match for UFC 178 this September late Thursday night.

The card takes place from Toronto, the site of the first Jones-Gustafsson fight, which “Bones” won via decision. Both men have picked up victories since that night, as Jones defended his title against Glover Teixeira, while Gustafsson stopped Jimi Manuwa.

Recently, Jones stated his desire to test his skills against Daniel Cormier – and not Gustafsson – next. However, he agreed to the fight during a meeting in Las Vegas with Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta.

“I think Cormier is the tougher fighter, but the fans want to see me fight Gustafsson,” Jones said. “There was never an issue taking the Gustafsson fight. The issue was that my brother is getting married in July and I would have preferred a later date. I didn’t want to go this early and I would have preferred to go later in October or November. It is what it is. We have a date now. This was a personal decision for me. I will be at my brother’s wedding and have a proper training camp.”

Jones has a 20-1 overall record, including seven successful title defenses. Gustafsson is 16-2, with 10 of his pro wins coming via knockout.

White sees the whole situation between Jones, Gustafsson and Cormier as a win-win for his promotion and MMA fans.

“The great thing about this is, we get Jones vs. Gustafsson and if Jones beats Gustafsson, we get Jones vs. Cormier,” White continued. “Two great fights in the light heavyweight division with three of the baddest guys in the world; the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world and champion Jon Jones, and the No. 1 and 2 contenders.”

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan was backstage at RAW in Indianapolis this week. The rehabilitation of his right arm is reportedly going slower than they anticipated.

The Wrestling Observer noted that one person close to Bryan said that not only is he not making gains but he’s actually losing strength in his arm while doing rehab. Bryan’s condition was a hot topic among those in power at RAW.

We noted before that MVP suffered a knee injury at a May 30th Preston City Wrestling event in the UK. Until he gets MRI results back, it’s still unknown if he will be able to face TNA World Heavyweight Champion Eric Young at Slammiversary next weekend.

MVP appeared at the May 31st events he was booked for overseas and cut a promo as General Manager, apologizing to fans that he couldn’t compete. MVP said x-rays were inconclusive on the extent of the injury and he would need to get an MRI. MVP has been quiet about the injury on Twitter and at TNA has not acknowledged it yet. Chris Masters was on the same tour as MVP and posted a photo of MVP in a wheelchair on June 2nd.

It’s possible TNA already knows an update on his condition and will insert something into tonight’s Impact Wrestling broadcast but TNA could once again face major issues with a match due to taping so many weeks ahead.

Wrestling News: Undertaker Health Update, Seth Rollins, Scott Hall, More

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

– It’s said that the angle with Seth Rollins turning on The Shield at RAW was officially decided upon on Sunday afternoon before the Payback pay-per-view. The angle was apparently Vince McMahon’s reaction to the low RAW rating the week before.

– The Observer also noted that it’s said that when The Undertaker has been asked if he’s coming back for WrestleMania 31 after the brutal match at WrestleMania XXX and the other injuries he’s had, he’s said in the last week or two that it’s not looking good. Taker has been back in the gym working out, however.

– WWE has made multiple developmental deal offers to Scott Hall’s son Cody Hall. Cody has turned down the offers, saying he wants to make a name for himself on the indies before. We’ve heard more than once that Hall is serious about learning and making a name himself on the indies and internationally before looking at joining WWE.

– As noted, WWE is looking at doing four live NXT specials on the WWE Network each year. With tapings booked for September 11th and September 25th, it looks like the next live special will take place on September 10th but that’s not confirmed. Triple H previously mentioned possibly doing the next live show in August or September.
