Chris Jericho Talks Vince’s Reaction To His Backstage Fight With Goldberg, And More

0

Credit to Scott H. who attended Chris Jericho’s one-man show in London, England and sent this report as well as the photo above. Here are a few highlights, we will have more from the show tomorrow.

* Jericho talked about Goldberg. Goldberg refused to work with Jericho at a WCW pay-per-view because he had planned to go hunting that day, so Jericho worked with Bobby Duncum Jr. instead. Jericho said that Goldberg had a bad attitude and no sense of humour. The only person who praised him during his time in WCW was Hulk Hogan. Jericho said that Eric Bischoff and Goldberg were idiots.

* He then talked about his backstage fight with Goldberg in WWE. Goldberg had just talked Jericho into the ground while Y2J was in the ring. A friend told Jericho about it and he confronted Goldberg. They exchanged words and Jericho put him in a headlock, which Goldberg couldn’t get out of. A few days later Vince texted Jericho and asked, “what happened at RAW?” Jericho replied saying that they got into a fight. Vince texted back and wrote, “I know, I cant believe you beat up Goldberg, you really need to text me stuff like that!!” Jericho and Vince seem to have a great relationship.

* Jericho talked about how his days in Japan sucked until he performed as Chris Jericho, not Super Liger.

* WCW once sent him a check for $0.00 and a Fed Ex with nothing in it at all.

* Jericho was the best person I have ever seen live! He commanded the stage from the second he walked out, was down to earth and was funny and entertained us all night! He is the best in the world at what he does!

Jumping out of order again with my reviewing, but I like to hit the big shows as close to when they happened as possible.  Makes my reviews seem more current and topical, I promise I will get to the smaller New Japan shows from back in February that I skipped over.  This was another major event for New Japan, as four titles were on the line and all the major players are here.  Plus we have a special match of Sakuraba vs. Gracie to hopefully end that feud once and for all.  Here is the full card:

– Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask, Mascara Dorada, and El Desperado vs. Ryusuke Taguchi, Alex Shelley, KUSHIDA, and BUSHI
– Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Yujiro Takahashi, and Tama Tonga vs. Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, Tomoaki Honma, and Captain New Japan

– Minoru Suzuki and Shelton Benjamin vs. Toru Yano and Takashi Iizuka
– Bad Luck Fale vs. Tetsuya Naito

IWGP Heavyweight Championship:  AJ Styles vs. Kazuchika Okada

Match Thoughts:  First of all, I just want to complain about El Desperado getting pinned in the opening match, just a few months after he was brought in as a ‘big deal’.  So basically he is just another Jr. Heavyweight now, a wasted opportunity to make him more of a star.  Anyway this was a perfectly fine opener, lots of Jr. Heavyweights flying around, quite entertaining.  Just a fun way to start the show with no real substance, but entertaining nonetheless.  Score:  6.0

Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Yujiro Takahashi, and Tama Tonga vs. Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, Tomoaki Honma, and Captain New Japan
They all brawl to start the match, with Bullet Club getting the upper hand.  In the ring Nakanishi and Gallows run into each other but neither man goes down.  Nakanishi goes off the ropes and finally knocks Gallows to the mat, he goes off the ropes again but Anderson kicks him from the apron.  Anderson comes in the ring but Nakanishi lariats him to the mat.  Tonga comes in but Nakanishi picks him up and throws Tonga at Gallows.  Nakanishi tags in Honma but Gallows punches Honma in the face and kicks him down in the corner.  Gallows tags in Tonga, and Tonga punches Honma in the corner before elbowing him in the back of the head.  Tonga goes off the ropes but Honma hits a back elbow followed by a lariat.  Irish whip by Honma to the corner and he hits a jumping elbow followed by a face crusher.  Honma goes for a headbutt but Tonga moves out of the way and all the Bullet Club wrestlers come into the ring.  They all stomp on Honma, Tonga picks up Honma and throws him into the corner.  Stomps by Tonga, cover, but he gets a two count.  Tonga picks up Honma but Honma chops him in the chest, Tonga picks up Honma and hits a Samoan Drop.  Tonga then hits an elbow drop, cover, but it gets a two count.  Tonga tags in Yujiro, and Yujiro kicks Honma in the corner.  Yujiro kicks Honma in the stomach and they trade elbows before Yujiro elbows Honma to the mat.  Yujiro tags in Anderson, and Anderson hits a series of mounted punches to Honma.  Side headlock by Anderson, Honma elbows out of it and goes off the ropes, but Anderson hits a jumping leg lariat for a two count.

Anderson picks up Honma and mocks Nagata before going for a vertical suplex, but Honma blocks it and hits a vertical suplex of his own.  Honma tags in Nagata, Nagata boots Gallows and Yujiro off the apron before kicking Anderson in the chest.  Nagata kicks Anderson into the corner, Irish whip, and Nagata hits a running boot.  Nagata goes for an exploder but Anderson gets out of it, Irish whip by Anderson but Nagata dropkicks Anderson in the knee.  Nagata goes off the ropes but he is kicked from the apron.  Tonga Irish whips Nagata but Nagata reverses it and hits an over the head suplex.   Nagata goes off the ropes but Anderson catches him with a spinebuster.  Back up, elbows by Anderson and he goes for a cutter but Nagata hits a heel kick.  Nagata tags in Captain New Japan while Yujiro is also tagged in, Irish whip by Yujiro but Captain New Japan hits a jumping shoulderblock.  Nagata, Nakanishi, and Honma come into the ring and they all hit running strikes on Yujiro in the corner.  Exploder by Nagata to Yujiro and Honma delivers a headbutt.  Captain New Japan goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving headbutt.  Cover by Captain New Japan but the pin is broken up.  Captain New Japan waits for Yujiro to get up and applies the Caribbean Death Grip but it is broken up as well.  Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer onto Honma and Anderson hits a Gun Stun onto Captain New Japan.  Yujiro picks up Captain New Japan, he gets him up his shoulders and hits the Miami Shine.  Cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winners:  Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Yujiro Takahashi, and Tama Tonga

Match Thoughts:  Too many wrestlers for one match but it wasn’t bad or anything.  Some of the wrestlers did virtually nothing in the match, it would have been better if the match either got more time or had less wrestlers.  The point I suppose was to put over the Bullet Club although pinning Captain New Japan isn’t the strongest way to do it.  Just a typical run of the mill undercard eight man tag match.  Score:  5.0

(c) Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima vs. Lance Archer and Davey Boy Smith Jr. vs. Rob Conway and Wes Brisco
This match is for the NWA World Tag Team Championship.  All three teams brawl to start the match with the gaijins ending up being in the ring together.  Smith Irish whips Conway but Conway hits a leg lariat.  Smith responds with a backdrop suplex, Archer comes over and they both hit a  delayed suplex on their respective opponents.  Conway is singled out, and Archer hits a running body press while Smith connects with a leg drop.  Tenzan and Kojima come into the ring and attack Smith and Archer, isolating Smith in the ring.  Double Irish whip to Smith and they both throw Smith to the mat.  Archer comes back in, Tenzan and Kojima trade strikes on Archer until he falls to the mat, and then hit an elbow drop/headbutt combination.  Tenzan chops Smith back into the corner, Irish whip, and Tenzan hits a lariat.  Tenzan goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits the calf branding.  Cover by Tenzan but it gets a two count.  Tenzan clubs Smith in the back and hits a headbutt followed by a chop.  Tenzan goes off the ropes but he is tripped from ringside, Brisco then gets in the ring and punches Tenzan in the face.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Brisco and Conway Irish whip Tenzan, boot by Conway and Brisco hits a swinging neckbreaker.  Conway goes off the ropes and hits an elbow drop, cover, but it gets a two count.  Conway elbows Tenzan in the corner and he hits a body avalanche.  Conway hits one as well, Conway picks up Tenzan and clubs him in the chest.  Conway goes off the ropes and hits a sliding kick.  Figure four by Brisco to Tenzan but it is broken up.  Archer punches Conway while Brisco kicks Smith, and Archer hits a bit boot onto Conway.  Archer then grabs Brisco and they trade strikes, but Archer and Smith slam Brisco to the mat.  Cover, but Kojima breaks it up.  Archer grabs Kojima and they go for the same move, but Kojima kicks out of it and DDTs Brisco.

Smith comes in the ring but Kojima hits a DDT on him as well.  Conway clubs Kojima in the back, Irish whip by Conway to the corner but Kojima avoids his jumping elbow strike and hits his rapid fire chops in the corner.  Irish whip by Kojima and he hits an elbow in the corner followed by a diving elbow drop.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Kojima picks up Conway but Conway elbows him back and the two traded blows.  Elbows by Kojima and he hits a roaring elbow and then hits a brainbuster.  Cover, but he gets a two count.  Irish whip by Kojima but Conway hits a spear.  Archer comes in the ring and hits a chokeslam onto Conway, Brisco runs in the ring and slams Archer backwards into the mat.  Smith comes in and knees Brisco, then hits a powerbomb.  Cover, but Tenzan breaks it up.  Heel kick by Tenzan to Smith, Conway comes in the ring and he hits Tenzan with Mongolian Chops.  Tenzan comes back with his own chops, headbutt by Tenzan, Irish whip, and with Kojima they hit the 3D.  Cover, but Brisco breaks it up.  Tenzan knocks Brisco to the mat and applies the Anaconda Vice but breaks it when Bruce Tharpe tries to get in the ring.  Dropkick by Brisco and a roll-up, but he gets a two count.  Brisco waits for Tenzan to get up and dropkicks him in the knee.  Figure four leglock by Brisco but Kojima breaks it up.  Archer comes in the ring but Kojima lariats him back out of it, then he hits the Koji Cutter onto Conway.  Brisco picks up Kojima and hits an Argentine Backbreaker into a cutter, Tenzan has recovered, Irish whip to Brisco and he hits the Mountain Bomb.  Kojima comes back and he hits Brisco with a lariat.  Tenzan goes up to the top turnbuckle and delivers the moonsault, cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winners and still champions:  Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima

Match Thoughts:  These matches are a little too illogical for my taste.  When you have a match with three tag teams, but with no tag rules, wrestlers just have to ‘disappear’ for long periods of the match for no reason.  For example both Smith and Anderson at various times were just gone.  I saw a match with similar rules once live and I could see them just standing near the apron, waiting for the spot that told them to run back in the ring to do something.  I know wrestling isn’t always logical but it’s a title fight so it was a bit frustrating.  Other than that the action was fine, no real flow or structure at all, just power guys taking turns hitting power moves.  Score:  3.5

Minoru Suzuki and Shelton Benjamin vs. Toru Yano and Takashi Iizuka
As soon as the match begins, Suzuki and Benjamin attack Yano.  Iizuka gets in the ring but instead of helping Yano, he got out his metal claw and hit Yano with it.  Suzuki then dropped Yano with a Gotch-style piledriver, cover, and he picks up the three count.  Your winners:  Minoru Suzuki and Shelton Benjamin

Match Thoughts:  This match was eight seconds, not eight minutes like reports have listed.  Just a storyline match as Iizuka turns against CHAOS and joins Suzuki Army.  Not the biggest turn as far as I am concerned, Iizuka is old and is a bit player, plus he switched to one heel stable to another heel stable so I dunno why I am supposed to feel sorry for Yano. But I guess they got their point across. Score:  N/A

Bad Luck Fale vs. Tetsuya Naito
Fale clubs Naito to start the match, Irish whip by Fale, Naito goes for a crossbody but Fale catches him.  Naito gets out of his grasp and he dropkicks Fale out of the ring.   Naito then goes out to the apron and he hits a dropkick off the apron down to the floor.  Naito picks up Fale and punches him against the guard rail.  Fale punches Naito back and scratches his back (in a mean way, not in a girlfriend kinda way).  Fale gets back in the ring and Naito eventually follows, and Fale stands on Naito’s chest.  Fale stomps on Naito but Naito elbows him back.  Fale knocks Naito to the mat and stands on his back against the ropes.  Cover by Fale but it barely gets a two count.  Stomp by Fale and he elbows Naito into the corner.  Shoulder strikes to the back by Fale in the corner and he hits a scoop slam.  Cover by Fale but it gets a two count.  Fale picks up Naito and throws Naito into the corner.  Punches to the stomach by Fale and he clubs on Naito in the corner.  Fale picks up Naito, Irish whip to the corner and he charges in, but Naito moves out of the way.  Kick to the stomach by Fale and he hits a scoop slam.  He goes for a body press but Naito moves and Naito dropkicks Fale in the head.  Enzigieri by Naito, snapmare, he goes off the ropes and Naito hits a rolling senton.  Naito charges Fale to the corner and hits a dropkick, then hits a kick from the apron.

Match Thoughts:  Naito sure has fallen down the ladder, hasn’t he?  Typical New Japan booking of pushing and then de-pushing, or did Naito deserve it?  Maybe a bit of both.  I try to like Fale because I enjoy big power wrestlers, but I find him generally uninspired.  At times he looks awkward in a not-good way and Naito was primary concerned with seeing how many different types of dropkicks he could throw.  Pretty lackluster affair even though it did have some bright moments, I guess Fale is moving up the card, hope that he continues to develop in the process.  Score:  4.0

Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Rolles Gracie
Sakuraba and Gracie circle each other to start, and Sakuraba kicks Gracie in the legs.  Judo takedown by Gracie and he chokes Sakuraba, but Sakuraba gets a foot on the ropes to force a break.  Gracie lets Sakuraba up and they trade kicks, Gracie gets Sakuraba onto his shoulders and slams him to the mat.  Gracie gets in the mount position and punches Sakuraba before choking him again, until Sakuraba gets into the ropes.  Gracie slowly releases the hold, he drags Sakuraba towards the middle of the ring and stomps him on before slamming Sakuraba to the mat.  Gracie picks up Sakuraba and slams him a second time, he gets Sakuraba’s back and applies a choke but Sakuraba gets into the ropes.  Sakuraba rolls out of the ring to re-group but returns after a moment, Gracie picks up Sakuraba and slams him into the corner.  Knee by Gracie but Sakuraba pulls Gracie’s Gi over his head and kicks him.  Release German suplex by Sakuraba, he grabs Gracie but Gracie goes for a cross armbreaker.  Sakuraba gets out of it, Gracie goes for a side choke but Sakuraba reverses it and applies the Sakuraba Lock.  They are in the middle of the ring and the referee stops the match.  Your winner:  Kazushi Sakuraba

Match Thoughts:  This honestly wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.  They kept it short, which was a fantastic idea, and kept the match moving.  Gracie didn’t look out of place like he has in the past and it flowed quite well as it was more wrestling than MMA in a lot of ways.  I don’t know if this will end their feud (Gracie was arguing with the referee after the match) but overall it was surprisingly decent.  Score:  6.0

Match Thoughts:  A really entertaining match, as Ishii matches tend to be.  There were a few sloppy moments but it didn’t really take away from the match as it came across as both wrestlers just trying anything to get the advantage.  Ishii got busted open hardway at some point as they were knocking the stuffing out of each other, and there really was no downtime in the match at all.  They were just throwing bombs through the entire match.  Good stuff from both men here.  Score:  8.0

Match Thoughts:   This was a really solid heavyweight sprint, and better than I was expecting.  Makabe was actively not bad here, maybe tag matches are his calling, and all four of these wrestlers work extremely well together.  The strikes were solid throughout and the only slow-ish time was the first Tanahashi/Shibata pairing.  I am a little annoyed that Makabe pinned Goto since Goto > Makabe, but he didn’t go down easily so I’ll get over it.  Really fun match though.  Score:  7.5

(c) Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Daniel Gracie
This match is for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.  Nakamura and Gracie circle each other, Gracie pushes Nakamura into the ropes but he gives a clean break.  Nakamura tackles Gracie, Gracie applies an armbar but Nakamura gets out of it.  Gracie goes for Nakamura’s arm but Nakamura gets a foot on the ropes.  Back up, Gracie gets Nakamura to the mat and gets into the mount position and hits a few elbows until Nakamura gets a foot onto the ropes again.  Gracie quickly takes Nakamura to the mat again, he traps Nakamura’s arms and hits more elbows.  Slaps by Gracie but Nakamura slips out of it.  Kicks by Nakamura and he knees Gracie in the chest in the corner.  Nakamura drags Gracie to the middle of the ring and hits a series of knees followed by a kneedrop.  Nakamura charges Gracie but Gracie catches him with a throw.  Back up they trade slaps, Nakamura goes for a kick but Gracie catches it.  Elbows by Gracie, he picks up Nakamura and applies a front headlock.  Nakamura slams his way out of it, knee by Nakamura and he puts Gracie up on in the ropes and goes for a knee, but Gracie moves out of the way and chokes Nakamura while in the ropes.  Running knee by Gracie and he applies a sleeper, but Nakamura gets out of it and hits a knee.  Cover, but Gracie re-applies the sleeper.  Nakamura gets in the ropes, he gets Gracie on his shoulders and hits the Landslide.  Boma Ye by Nakamura, cover, and he gets the three count.  Your winner and still champion: Shinsuke Nakamura

Match Thoughts:  Certainly not a good match, they should have taken a page out of the Sakuraba/Gracie match and kept it shorter.  The mat work didn’t look very convincing at all and while Gracie didn’t look bad, he had too many ‘advantages’ over Nakamura to not take advantage and win the match.  That is the issue with MMA-style pro wrestling matches, when Gracie has a choke locked in away from the ropes, that should be game over.  At least when Nakamura took over he won very quickly, and this result does allow me to continue to hope that this Gracie phase of New Japan is over.  Score:  4.0

(c) AJ Styles vs. Kazuchika Okada

Match Thoughts:   I thought this was better than their last match but still was lacking in some ways.  The interference was kept to a minimal which was good and it felt like Styles did earn the win.  My big issue with the match is that a lot of the big moves just didn’t feel like they meant anything.  It was almost too tit-for-tat, meaning when one wrestler did a big move to his opponent within ten seconds the opponent was back in control.  It just made the bigger moves less meaningful since there weren’t any long parts that one wrestler was controlling the match.  The action was more crisp however as they are likely getting more familiar with each other and overall it was an entertaining match.  Score:  7.0

Final Thoughts:

Best Match: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Kota Ibushi.  There were a number of really good matches on this card but this one was probably the best.  It didn’t have any obvious flaws and both wrestlers played their roles well.  Ibushi is a bit too flippy at times but he also has excellent strikes as well, and they just laid into each other here.  Ishii can almost do no wrong at this point, and it was a really entertaining match.

MVP:   AJ Styles.  The crowd wasn’t really sure what to think of Styles a month ago when he won the belt, but here the crowd was buying what he was selling.  Styles is such a veteran, even though he didn’t have  much experience in Japan before he won the belt, he is still a convincing champion and he won here with very little interference from the outside which helped put him over as well.  I don’t know where they are going with the Styles title reign, but so far so good.

Overall:  This was a really good card from top to bottom.  Three of the matches I’d recommend trying to watch, and others were very solid as well.  There were a few stinkers but at least the NWA stuff was all confined to one match here and only one of the Gracie matches was a waste of time.  For New Japan fans this show is a must, but any fan of Puroresu should find something here that they enjoy.

The “OH MY GOD!” Review: WWA/ECW “Battle of the Belts” 1/23/93

0

ECW/WWA Battle of the Belts 1993-01-23 from Radisson Hotel in Philadelphia, PA

This was a joint show between the ECW and the WWA which was a promotion based out of NJ. Earlier in the day there was a wrestling convention at the hotel.

WWA Junior Heavyweight Champion “Surfer” Ray Odyssey vs. Chris Evans
Surfer with an arm bar to start and he floors Evans with a shoulder block. Evans with a side headlock ray throws him into the ropes and hits a hip toss then a body slam. Evans rolls to the floor. Ray follows him out with a slingshot plancha. Evans walks around the ring a bit and the champ stops the referees ten count a few times. Back in the ring Evans knees Odyssey in the stomach. Odyssey reverses a corner whip and back drops Evans as he comes out from hitting the buckle. They lock up and Evans again with a knee. Evans throws Ray to the floor and comes off the tope with a double axe handle. He slams Odyssey’s head into the apron. Back in the ring Rey gets a 2 count on a sunset flip. Evans pokes Ray in the eyes. Odyssey with a drop kick and they trade chops in the corner. Evans hits a stiff looking superkick and whips Odyssey chest first into the opposite corner. Piledriver but Ray rolls to the apron so he can’t be pinned. Evans whips him to a corner and charges but Odyssey gets the boots up and Evans goes down. Ray misses a 2nd rope elbow drop. Evans goes up top but misses a splash. Odyssey fights back with a clothesline and top rope dropkick. Evans throws Ray into a corner and charges but Odyssey hits a sunset flip when Evans charges with his head down and gets the win at 9.22.

WWA Promoter Dennis Coraluzzo comes to the ring to introduce his WWA Tag Team Champions Pain and Agony The Lords of Darkness. They are lead to the ring by their manager Tricky Nicky. ECW President Tod Gordon hits the ring to announce his tag team The Super Destroyers. I think Coraluzzo is the heel here as the Destroyers are getting cheered.

WWA Tag Team Champions Lords of Darkness (w/Tricky Nicky) vs. ECW Tag Team Champions Super Destroyers (w/Hunter Q. Robbins III) ref John Finnegan
A title versus title match! With an ECW ref, that doesn’t seem fair. The Destroyers are much larger then their opponents. All four men wear masks so this should be fine to type. Destroyer pushes a Lord off and the other one complains of a mask pull. Coraluzzo gets on the mic and complains that it’s an ECW ref. the Destroyer hits a pump handle and then a press slam and tags. Lords of Darkness are able to tag also. Destoyer drags the Lord into the corner and tags. Corner whip and big hip toss by the ECW team. Destroyers tag back and forth and get in the normal big man offense of punch, kick, sledge. Suplex by the Destroyer and he tags. Side slam and hip toss as the WWA Tag Team Champions look way outmatched. Just as I type that they are able to make a tag and hit a double drop kick. Reverse chin lock and they make a few illegal switches. Destroyer fights back rather quickly and makes the tag. The other one comes in and misses an elbow drop allowing the Lords to take back over. All four men brawl in the ring. Both managers come in the ring and hit the opponent with a weapon. The ref counts a double pin but then for some reason gives all the belts to the Super Destroyers. Are we to believe that he was able to figure out who the legal men were? The Destroyers win the WWA tag belts in 8.14

“Wildman” Sal Bellomo (w/ Cosmic Commander) vs. ??? (w/ Women)
Women tells us that Kevin Sullivan who was set to be the opponent is not here tonight but she has a special surprise. She calls out her pick and someone comes out in a mask. The guy in the mask has a jacket on that says “Kerry”. Since Kerry Von Erich was at the wrestling convention earlier in the day no one has a hard time figuring out who it is. The Commander pushes the masked man and gets hit with a spinning discus punch. Bellomo attacks from behind but gets hit with the same spinning punch. Bellomo rips off the mask and by god it’s Kerry Von Erich! Bellomo may actually be surprised. Von Erich misses a corner charge and his shoulder hits the post. Bellomo uses his limited offense to take down Kerry and locks in a sleeper hold. Von Erich eventually fights out of it and puts on one of his own. Bellomo quickly drops down into a jaw breaker. Sal comes of the second rope but gets caught in the claw. Kerry hits the rope and lands the spinning punch but Sal kicks out at 2. Back to the sleeper and both men fall out of the ring and brawl. Both men get counted out at 5.53.

Brass Knuckles Bullrope Cowbell Match: Tony Stetson vs. Johnny Hotbody (w/ Devious Don E. Allen) ref John Finnegan
This is the second meeting between the two men and they have so quickly built up hatred for each other that they jumped right into a bullrope match. You can read my recap of the first meeting back in ECW TV Pilot 2. Stetson charges the ring and attacks Hotbody. He hangs him over the top rope as the ref tries to break them apart. They brawl on the floor and both men get busted open. Back in the ring Stetson chokes Hotbody with the rope and gets low blowed. Hotbody hits Stetson with the bell drops a few elbows. Hotbody covers and gets a pin at 4.42. Strange ending as it looked like Stetson kicked out.

Davey Boy Smith vs. The Masked Superstar, ref John Finnegan
Davey Boy over powers, out wrestles and out quicks the Superstar to start. Superstar though rakes the eyes and body slams Smith. Smth whipped into the corner but Superstar misses a charge. Smith hits his running powerslam and gets the win at 1.42.

ECW Champion Sandman (w/ Peaches) vs. WWA Champion The Spider
Coraluzzo and Gordon argue over who the referee for the match is going to be. It’s decided that the WWA ref will be inside the ring with John Finnegan outside for ECW. The masked man Spider hits the ring exciting the kids by shooting them with silly string. Sandman hits the ring and we have two surfer gimmicks in one show!!!! Spider gets big cheers during his introduction. Sandman’s reaction is mixed. “Sandman sucks” chant starts up so looks like he’s playing the bad guy tonight. Sider with a super kick and Sandman goes to the floor. Headlock takeover by Spider. Sandman fights back up and throws Spider into the turnbuckle. He charges but Spider leaps up and over Sandman hits an arm drag and back to the headlock takeover. Sandman fights his way back up pushes Spider to the ropes but ducks his head and Spider slams it to the mat. Back to the headlock and Sandman finally able to counter it with a back suplex. Sandman beats on Spider in a corner. Irish whip by Sandman and they clothesline each other. Sandman up leaning against the ropes and he gets clotheslined out of the ring. Sandman to the apron and Spider jumps off the top rope and clotheslines Sandman as they both fall to the floor. Back in the ring Sandman takes Spider down with an arm drag and he holds onto the arm. Spider gets to the ropes and rolls to the apron. Sandman goes to suplex him in but Spider lands on top and gets a 2. Sandman right back in control and he just wears away at Spider for the next few minutes. Sandman throws Spider to the corner but the ref gets in the way and they go down. Sandman covers as the ECW ref gets in to make a 2 count. Spider goes for a back suplex and Sandman’s foot hits the new ref. Gordon and Carluzzo get in the ring and start fighting. The refs wake up and call for the bell 11.57. All four men continue to brawl as the locker rooms clear.

Texas Death I Quit Match: “Hot stuff” Eddie Gilbert vs. Terry Funk
Funk stops Gilbert from coming to the ring as they stare each other down in aisle. Gilbert is being led to the ring by a lady manager. In the ring they point and shout at each other a bit. Women comes running down to the ring and joins Funk by his side. Women then chases Gilbert’s manager to the back. They lock up and Funk elbows Gilbert then throws him out of the ring. Funk drags him back in only to throw him right back out. Gilbert on the apron and Funk knocks him back to the floor. Gilbert leaves the ring and walks to the back. The ref goes after him and makes him get back in the ring. Gilbert now punches away and Funk and sends him to the floor. Back in the ring Gilbert remains in control. Funk gets knocked out of the ring again. Back in Gilbert beats on Funk for a few minutes. Gilbert gets the time keepers hammer and hits Funk with it. Funk is busted open. Gilbert takes Funk out of the ring and slams his face into a table four times. They fight in the crowd and back to the ring. Gilbert with a reverse chin lock but Funk yells no into the mic. Funk trips Gilbert and goes for the spinning toe hold. After a few spins Gilbert hits Funk with the mic. Gilbert brings a table into the ring and smashes Funk into it. Gilbert drops Funk out of the ring and Funk lands on his head. They fight out of the ring Gilbert hits Funk with a cookie sheet. Funk fights back as we near the 15 minute mark. Gilbert is bleeding now. Back in the ring Funk puts the table on the mat and DDTs Gilbert on it. They go back outside the ring to brawl. Funk slams Gilbert’s head into the table a bunch of times then slaps him repeatedly. Gilbert begs for mercy from the ref but doesn’t say I quit. Funk suplexes Gilbert on the floor. Funk just beating the crap out of Gilbert. Gilbert manages to fight back and piledrivers Funk in the ring. Gilbert goes into his tights and pulls something out. Gilbert throws a fireball into Funk’s face! Funk won’t give up and Gilbert calls him crazy. Gilrbert brings the wooden ring steps into the ring. Funk slams Gilbert’s head into the steps. Funk starts screaming over the fact that Gilbert called him crazy. Gilbert gets up and they fight and Gilbert gets his leg tied up in the rope. Funk smashes Gilbert in the leg with the steps. Gilbert screams into the mic “You’re breakin my leg”. Funk doesn’t stop slamming the steps into the leg. Gilbert punches the ref from the ground. Coraluzzo gets in the ring and asks Gilbert if he quits and Gilbert does ending that match in 23.32. Funk collapses on the floor while walking to the back. After a few minutes Funk makes it to the back where he’s met by Coraluzzo who tells Funk that Gilbert is crazy and beat him up. Coraluzzo throws the cameraman out of the locker room and our show comes to an end.

My thoughts on the show
Not a big fan of this one at all, up until the main event at least. While it was cool to see the big names, nothing before the main event was good in ANY way. Funk and Gilbert beat the crap out of each other for 23 minutes and I did love that. A really good hardcore brawl. If you have this show, just fast forward the first hour and a half and get to the main event. Funk and Gilbert MADE this show.

TNA News: Released WWE Stars Headed In? Low Morale, More

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

The fact that TNA drew very bad attendance at their stadium shows last weekend really had morale down among the roster that was on the road.
Word is that so many talents have been let go, talents know that the Carter family is hardly putting any new money into the company and since wrestlers usually judge how things are going based on the crowds, it’s said that there is a feeling of uneasiness about the future even more than ever before right now. The lack of a TV deal is also part of the morale problem but TNA sending stars to the Spike TV awards show last week could be a sign that their talks are progressing.

Several TNA stars have recently contacted Ring of Honor for work and some are hoping that Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling will be an option. There’s also some concern that few details on GFW have been confirmed and it’s getting closer to the time when fall programming is announced.

Source: PWInsider

Regarding the recently released WWE talents showing up in TNA, the only one that’s able to do what he wants right now is Teddy Long as his contract expired.

The other talents were informed they were being released so they will be paid their downside for another 90 days and then will be free to do what they want. September 12th would be the earliest that we could see some of them in TNA.
