ECW Presents “Natural Born Killaz” 1996-08-24 at ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA

Champions
World: Raven
TV: Shane Douglas
Tag Team: Gangstas

Just three weeks removed from our last major Arena show we already get another one. Not sure what to expect from this show as basically none of it was ever advertised.

Louie Spicolli vs. Devon Storm (w/ Damien Kane & Lady Alexandra), ref John Finnegan
Before the match Taz is backstage shouting into the camera. He wants Sabu and now tells Rob Van Dam that he’s going to kill him to for getting in the way. During all this we hear the bell to signal the start of the match we are not seeing. To the match and Storm comes off the top with a head scissor. Spicolli goes to the floor and Storm comes off the top with a somersault senton. Spicolli gets a chair and slams it into Storm’s knee a bunch of times. Back in the ring Spicolli stays on the knee. Storm pushes Spicolli to the outside and Storm follows and gets the upper hand. Back in the ring Storm hits a slingshot leg lariat for 2. Storm comes off the top with a flying Diamond Dust for 2. Spicolli comes back and hits the DVD to the gasps of the fans for the pin in 5.43. About 15 seconds of that was during the Taz promo. Kane gets on the mic afterwards and wants to hire Spicolli. He offers Spicolli Alexandra, I guess it’s kind of signing bonus. They shake hands but Spicolli grabs him and hits a sick DVD. The crowd chants huge and asks for him to do it once more. He obliges and the fans pop HUGE. Now I realize that the ECW Arena crowd will chant for just about anything but this seemed like the type of pop that can get a guys career going in ECW.

European Junior Heavyweight Champion Mikey Whipwreck vs. Little Guido (JT Smith, Big Guido & Sal Bellomo), ref Jim Molineaux
Well these guys had a stinker of a match last night let’s see how round 2 goes. Back and forth for the first few minutes Mikey takes over with a rocker dropper and clothesline that sends Guido to the floor. Smith and Guido talk outside and Mikey planchas onto them. Mikey tries to jump on Big Guido with a frankensteiner but he catches him and puts him on the apron. Mikey kicks Guido into the crowd and goes up top. Mikey over leaps Big Guido on a frankensteiner attempt and crashes to the floor allowing Little Guido to gain the advantage. That almost looked like Big Guido bitched out on the move. Back in the ring Guido goes to work on the arm. Mikey ducks a clothesline hits a superkick and then misses a top rope splash. After a few minutes Mikey begins to mount a come back. Mikey hits a super monkey flip, basically he was going for a super rana and slipped followed by a top ropes elbow to get the win in 8.56. Mikey is on the ground holding his knee after the match and appears to be injured.

D-Von Dudley & Axl Rotten vs. Buh Buh Ray & Big Dick Dudley (w/ Sign Guy & Chubby Dudley), ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
D-Von Dudley and Axl Rotten are in the ring. D-Von is on the mic and trash talks the crowd for a bit. Buh Buh and Dick hit the ring and the fight is on. Buh Buh is all over D-Von while Big Dick beats on Axl. Buh Buh splashes D-Von through a table. About 3 minutes into the match and Buh Buh and D-Von on fighting in the crowd and up to the Eagle’s Nest. Axl and Big Dick join them. Buh Buh climbs all the way up to the top stage and then on top of a speaker and dives to the stage below with a cross body onto everyone including his partner. They all brawl back into the crowd. Buh Buh goes for a leg drop off the apron through a table but D-Von moves. Axl clips the knee of Big Dick in the ring and he gets double teamed. Dick fights out and has D-Von finally but Axl gets Dick from behind (during proof reading I see how dirty that sounds HA). Axl holds Dick (and there it is again) but he moves and D-Von hits Axl with a chair by accident. Dick throws Buh Buh onto Axl and they get the win at 8.16. The winners celebrate their victory in the ring. However with D-Von not getting pinned I think it’s a safe bet that this feud will continue you. Buh Buh goes after D-Von on the floor and smacks him with a chair. D-Von gets into the ring and throws a fit.

Missy Hyatt, Sandman, Lori Fullington, Stevie Richards, Blue Meanie and Super Nova are all in the ring. Ring Announcer Joel Gertner says he will not announce the match between Lori and Missy because Missy has a broken arm and he see no reason why he should let this match happen. Missy canes Joel and then so does Sandman. Meanie gets on the mic and gets caned by Missy. Stevie Richards is next and he talks about the sexual harassment law suit. Stevie says he will drop it if she denounces the Sandman. Missy gets on the mic and starts trash talking Sandman she turns and says her money is more important then the Sandman. OH GOD! Sandman canes her in the back of the skull and kills her.

No Rules Bad Street Death Match: “Primetime” Brian Lee vs. Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy, ref John Finnegan
Gordy does his run the ropes to warm up thing and Lee steps in front and nails him with a clothesline. Lee follows it up with a powerslam. Gordy comes back with a clothesline of his own and they brawl into the crowd. They go out to the crowd where they set off some car alarms. These guys are all over each other with stiff shots. Lee slams the back of Gordy’s head into a garage door a few times. They fight back to ringside. Lee charges Gordy and gets back dropped through a table. Into the ring Gordy with some clotheslines in the corner and a DDT for 2. Big boot by Lee but Gordy doesn’t go down. Gordy blocks a chokeslam with a low blow. Gordy locks on the Asiatic spike and gets the pin in 5.13.

Doug Furnas vs. Rob Van Dam, ref Jim Molineaux
It seems Van Dam has begun his stalling tactics that will lead to me despising him. Furnas hits a SICK looking release german before the 2 minutes mark. Rob with some flips and kicks. Furnas catches him bouncing off the ropes in a stun gun but instead just drops him over the top rope. Van Dam climbs back on the apron and Furnas charges and sends him flying into the crowd. Furnas follows and takes it to the extreme! They go to the top bleacher and Furnas press slams Van Dam and throws him across a gap onto a stage behind. Van Dam takes tons of chair shots and the fans are going extra nuts for this. Furnas kills Van Dam with a clothesline that sends him over the guardrail back to the ringside area. Furnas goes back into the ring and Van Dam suplexes Furnas from inside the ring to the outside. Van Dam does the slingshot leg drop with the chair on Furnas’ face. Van Dam with a double leg drop from the top rope for 2. Van Dam misses a spin kick and Furnas throws him over head with a belly to belly suplex. Big powerslam by Furnas for 2. Van Dam comes back with a springboard kick for 2. Van Dam goes for the super fisherman buster but Furnas blocks and front suplexs Van Dam to the mat. Furnas comes off the top with a flying clothesline. Van Dam rolls to the floor and gets a chair and smacks Furnas with it. Van Dam comes off the top Furnas catches and tries to powerslam him but lands oddly and Van Dam gets 2. Van Dam goes for a cross body and Furnas catches him again flips him around and tombstones him on a chair for 2. Van Dam goes for a monkey flip on a chair but Furnas blocks it and spin busters Van Dam on the chair. Oh god Furnas puts a huge dent in a chair with Van Dam’s skull. He hits Van Dam again then pushes the ref away. Van Dam hops up and kicks the chair into Furnas’ face and covers him for the win in 13.06. After the match Van Dam gets on the mic and tells Furnas he respects him and wants to shake hands. They do but then Furnas levels Van Dam with a clothesline and a release german suplex that flips Van Dam all the way over and he lands stomach first! Van Dam is stretchered out.

Taz (w/ Bill Alfonso & Team Taz) vs. Tommy Dreamer (w/ Beulah), ref John “Pee Wee” Moore
Taz gets on the mic before the match and says the fans won’t see any hardcore shit or brawling out of the ring just wrestling and Taz choking out Dreamer. Dreamer comes out and they go nose to nose. They quickly come to blows and we get the bell. Taz throws Dreamer to floor right away and throws him into the rail and starts slamming his head into it. Chair to the back and into the rail again goes Dreamer. Taz throws him back in and charges Tommy getting toe hold and hip tossed. Taz hangs back and we slow things down a bit. They go back and forth early on but Tommy is clearly still beat up from the start of the match. Taz pulls up Dreamers shirt and we see that Tommy came into the match with taped ribs. Taz with a T-Bone. Alfonso screams into the camera that they knew about the injury. Taz works over the ribs with a few submissions and stomps. They go to the floor where Team Taz hold Dreamer on the rail so Taz can hit him with a chair. Dreamer comes back and nails Taz with a chair. Back in the ring Dreamer with a bulldog onto a chair. Tommy goes for a DDT onto the chair but Taz sweeps his legs out from under him and Dreamer hits the chair. Taz goes for a super belly to belly but Dreamer holds onto the buckle and Taz crashes to the mat. Dreamer with a top rope dive onto all of Team Taz on the floor. There’s like five or six. Tommy then leans a table on the bottom rope and baseball slides it all into Team Taz he baseball slides Alfonso. Taz comes from behind and hits a german suplex. Taz grabs a chair but the ref wanted to stop the damage to Dreamer takes it away. Urinagi on the ref and Taz props a table up in the corner. Taz belly to bellies Dreamer through the table. Taz sets up full nelson suplex but Dreamer goes low and then goes for a DDT. Taz reverses into a northern lights and then locks on the Tazmission. Beulah gets in the ring and begs for Taz to stop. Alfonso comes in and threatens Beulah with a chair. Terry Gordy comes to save her but the Eliminators follow him and give him Total Elimination. Brian Lee now hits the ring and puts Gordy in the Asiatic spike. Referee Paul Richards, “El Puerto Ricano” Pablo Marquez, Don E. Allen, Bad Crew all get total elimination. Bad Crew at the same time. Lee chokeslams Marquez over the top rope to the floor. Buh Buh Ray Dudley comes out and gets very little offense before Lee grabs and chokeslams him. Sign Guy Dudley tries to help out but the Eliminators both just jump up and kick him hard in the face and back of the head. Hack Meyers shows up and gets in a few shots before getting t-boned and hit with total elimination. Lee then puts him in the spike. The heels all pose in the ring over the carnage they left.

Sandman is in the ring with a dog collar on. He is pretty sad because he has no wife, no kid, no manager and worst of all no partner because TV Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas put the Pitbull in the hospital last night. Sandman says he does have his life though and that he is the King of Extreme and if World Champion Raven and Douglas want his life they can come get it. Out comes Raven, Lori and Tyler Fullington, Blue Meanie, Nova, Richards, Douglas and Francine. Meanie, Nova and Douglas get caned, Reven gets in the ring and with get a bell. I’ll let you know who’s in the match when I figure it out. Lori canes Sandman from behind and Raven hits a DDT for 2. Douglas wraps the chain from the dog collar around his fist and nails Sandman. I think we are watching…..

Double Dog Collar Match: World Champion Raven & TV Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas (w/Lori & Tyler Fullington, Blue Meanie, Nova, Richards, Douglas & Francine) vs. Sandman, ref Jim Molineaux
Raven puts on his side of the collar. Sandman is busted open. Douglas wraps the chain around Sandman’s face. Pitbull 1 comes to ringside as Douglas and Raven just beat down Sandman. They clothesline Sandman with the chain and then hang him over the top rope. Sandman pulls Raven by the chain out of the ring. Douglas follows and they beat on Sandman some more. Lori canes Sandman a bunch. Piledriver by Douglas but it’s not enough to put Sandman away. They post Sandman crotch first. Pitbull 2 hits the ring in a neck brace and he’s all over Douglas and Raven. Belly to belly on Douglas and a DDT on Raven. Another belly to belly on Douglas but Raven breaks up the pin. Raven with a piledriver on Pitbull 2. Sandman chokes Douglas with the chain. Pitbull 2 puts on the other collar and locks Douglas in it. Sandman holds Douglas but Douglas moves and Pitbull 2 hits Sandman with the chain. Pitbull 2 back on Shane and he busts him open. Meanie comes into the ring and misses a meaniesault. Raven and Sandman crash through a table together. All four men brawl on the floor. The brawl continues as we pass 12 minutes. Chokeslam by Pitbull 2 on Douglas gets a 2 count. Douglas and Raven hit a superbomb onto Sandman. Sandman some how kicks out at 2. Pitbull 2 with a full nelson on Douglas. Raven gets the loaded boot but misses. Pitbull 2 gets the boot and nails Raven. Douglas bails and Raven gets pinned in 15.16. After the match Meanie gets canned and Raven hides behind Tyler. A loud “cane your kid” chant from the fans. Tyler walks to the center of the ring and Sandman drops to his knees. Tyler reaches his hand out for the cane. Sandman hands it to him and he hits Sandman a few times and Raven attacks Sandman. Raven lays him out with a few cane shots.

Steel Cage Weapons Match: Tag Team Champions The Gangstas vs. Eliminators, ref John Finnegan
Gangstas for once don’t charge the ring to start the brawl. There are 4 guys in black hoods with weapons in each corner on the outside of the ring. A wrestler must call for a weapon and will have it thrown to them. The Eliminators try to sneak up behind on the outside of the ring but the Gangstas see them and attack first. Into the crowd they go. Saturn climbs to the top of the cage and dives to the floor onto all three guys!!!!! Into the ring Saturn again on the top of the cage and he comes off with a clothesline onto New Jack. Mustafa takes down Kronus then goes after Saturn. All four men bleeding. Saturn with a falcon arrow on Mustafa. He again goes to the top of the cage and comes off with a splash. New Jack gets a garbage can from one of the guys in the corner and jumps off the top rope and smashes it into Kronus’ head. Saturn off the top of the cage with an elbow onto Jack for 2. Pump handle fall away slam for 2 by Kronus. Saturn again jumps off the top but this time Jack throws a garbage can at him. New Jack comes off the top with a key board but gets drop kicked. Butterfly suplex by Mustafa onto Saturn. Kronus is completely covered in blood. New Jack calls for another weapon and the masked man climbs the cage to hand him a guitar. He hits Jack with the guitar and unmasks to reveal that he is Shane Douglas. Saturn AGAIN off the cage with a splash. Kronus holds Mustafa and Saturn comes off the cage ANOTHER time but Jack throws the garbage can at him again. Saturn goes to the tope of the cage and Jack again throws the garbage can him this time knocking him off the cage through a table to the floor. Running powerslam 187 chair combo and New Jack pins Kronus in 15.03. Saturn and Kronus again argue on the floor and get into each others faces. Douglas gets between them and throws up the triple threat signal to them and they calm down and leave.

My thoughts on the show…
I thought this show was really good. Usually the ECW shows that I really like have a good brawl or two and get balanced out with one or two solid wrestling matches. This show was all about the brawling. Spicolli had a nice “star building” reaction from the crowd and I’m looking forward to where they take him. Furnas KILLED Van Dam and I loved every second of it. For all the shit I talk about Van Dam and for how much I hate him I have to say he has been really solid so far since coming into ECW. It’s only a matter of time however before he spends every match doing nothing but pointing to himself and rolling around on the ground. The last two matches were some nice bloody battles although Saturn should have stopped jumping off the top of the cage after the 500th time as it lost all of its cool factor by then. A must see show here.

Ricardo Rodriguez Talks Negative Experiences With HHH, Compares Him To ‘Simpsons’ Character

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Following his departure from WWE two weeks ago, Ricardo Rodriguez is the latest wrestler to publicly resent Triple H.

As announced today by WWE, the sports-entertainment organization has come to terms with independent wrestling standout Kevin Steen, who was ranked 10th on Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s annual list of the world’s top 500 wrestlers last year. Enclosed in the company’s announcement is this photo of Triple H shaking Steen’s hand at Full Sail University. In response to the news surfacing on Twitter, Rodriguez, who was released from his contract with WWE on July 30, took the opportunity to air out some grievances on Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE’s Executive Vice President, Talent, Live Events and Creative.

Rodriguez wrote to Steen on the social media platform, “Congrats.. I hope he at least looked at you while shaking hands at one point and didnt call you fat as f–k. #OhMemories.”

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported last week that Rodriguez’s weight was a problem with WWE officials and likely factored in his departure from the organization.

It remains unclear whether WWE opted to release Rodriguez from his contract as part of budget cuts or if he asked to be released from his contract. Those close to Rodriguez told Meltzer that he requested to be let go due to his frustration with not being utilized as a wrestler—he stopped being used as a wrestler after competing as the masked El Local at NXT Takeover. However, in the same report, Meltzer says he was cut two weeks before his contract was set to expire due to a talent purge that also included developmental wrestlers. Whatever the case may be, his excess weight hindered his chances of success as a wrestler in WWE. It was reported by Meltzer that officials in the organization did not feel his body met company standards, even when largely covered in a costume. The WWE set a weight loss goal for him, and he was having issues achieving and maintaining it. According to independent wrestler and friend Leva Bates, Rodriguez was suspended last year for a violation of WWE’s drug testing policy due to fat burning supplements.

The former personal ring announcer of Alberto Del Rio also revealed that Triple H never referred to him by name, but as “Bumblebee Man.” Bumblebee Man is an over-the-top Hispanic cartoon character on The Simpsons who dresses in a bumblebee costume and performs slapstick comedy. It’s also a caricature of a character from an old Mexican television comedy series.

“#BumbleBee was his name for me… Don’t even think he ever knew my real name,” Rodriguez stated.

Both messages have since been deleted.

Rodriguez may be joining Del Rio in AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración) in the near future. Late last night on Twitter, he teased appearing for the promotion once his 90-day no-compete clause with WWE expires.

The Prime Time Wrestling Video Review 3/21/88

Prime Time Wrestling 3/21/88

Hey loyal readers, I was trying my hardest to do these shows in order, but unfortunately I came to realize the set I have is missing 2/29, 3/7, and 3/14 from 1988. I waited a while to see if I could get the missing episodes, they do exist, but it’s been a while and I don’t want to leave you guys hanging. So I’ll pick up here with March 21st edition from Atlantic City. It’s the final Prime Time episode before WrestleMania IV. I WILL have the missing episodes and I will fill those in when they arrive, but for right now I just wanted to keep going with the content. So away we go!

– Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan kick things off from Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, the sight of WrestleMania IV. As the show begins we seen Gorilla stepping out of his limo and checking into the hotel. Monsoon is wondering where Bobby Heenan is. We cut to inside the hotel at the front desk, Bobby Heenan is attempting to check in but his name isn’t on the reservations. Heenan with some funny banter with the lady at the desk. Heenan’s secretary Miss Betty seems to have screwed up Bobby’s reservations. Gorilla runs into Bobby while checking in and the two begin their usual arguing. We randomly cut to the first match.[spacer height=”20px”]

Match #1: The Killer Bees v. The Conquistadors. From Winston-Salem, NC 3/9/88 “Superstars” Tapings in the Coliseum. Vince McMahon and Lord Alfred Hayes on audio inserted commentary. The announcers spend some time discussing the WrestleMania IV Battle Royal, but Vince makes sure to put over the match as needed. The Bees with some good 1980’s high spots early in the match, a double backdrop by the Bees and Blair flaps his “wings” before coming off the second rope. I HATE THAT WING FALPPING SHIT! Blair tries an abdominal stretch, but the Conquistadors with some shenanigans and the masked team takes control. Lots of quick offense from the Conquistadors until Brian Blair clotheslines one out of the ring. The Conquistadors do a switch on the floor behind the official and they remain in control. Brunzell gets lured in and another switch by the masked heel team. Blair is tossed to the floor, and now this time it’s the Bees who put on their masks. Now it’s the Bees turn to make some illegal switches which please the fans. Brunzell hits the big dropkick, but the fall is broken up. Brunzell covers again, and again broken up and Jim is hurt. The Conquistador covers Brunzell, but Blair comes off the middle rope with an elbow to the back of the legal Conquistador. Brunzell rolls out of the ring and Blair covers to get the win in 6:50. The match wasn’t bad, the Bees sold more than I would have expected, but they had a good line of offense early, the Conquistadors did okay on their end, they knew how to work the heat. Lots of false finishes at the end kept it fun. **

– Gorilla and Bobby enter their hotel suite. Heenan alludes to stealing some of the hotel room merchandise, Gorilla forbids him. Back to the matches.

[spacer height=”20px”]
Match #2: Special Delivery Jones v. Steve Lombardi.
From Boston Garden 3/5/88. Gorilla Monsoon & Alfred Hayes on commentary. A surprise spot in the match, a small screen pops up in the bottom corner with Heenan and Gorilla making a bet from Trump Plaza. Heenan wins a coin toss and gets to pick a winner for this match. Heenan chooses SD Jones to win this match. The winner of the bet will make the loser do something. Normally I’d assume SD was winning this match, but with Bobby picking him to win, I’m not so sure anymore. Back to the match, Hayes makes mentions of recent wins from Lombardi, Gorilla responds “I must have missed those”. Hayes says the wins happened on the “B circuit” where Gorilla never is. I found it amusing anyway. SD with some offense early, Lombardi takes over with a reverse chinlock, then some choking, followed by some stomping. Classic stuff here, but not really. Gorilla rips on Lombardi’s haircut. Lombardi drives SD into the corner buckle but Jones of course no sells because he’s black and that’s just the rule of the times. Jones fight back with a series of punches and attempts a sunset flip, but Lombardi sits on him for 2. Jones counters into a sunset flip for 2. SD whips Lombardi into the ropes for a backdrop but Steve counters with a small package in 8:02. I was disappointed, not a single mention of the Terry Garvin school of self defense. This wasn’t good, but I expected even worse. So for that it gets 1/4*

– Inside their hotel suite, Gorilla and Bobby talk about Heenan losing the bet they made during the previous match. As the winner, Monsoon hasn’t figured out what he’s going to do to Heenan yet.[spacer height=”20px”]

– WrestleMania IV Update with Craig DeGeorge. Craig sells the PPV and the Closed Crcuit routes of watching the show. Tournament brackets are shown, we hear from Dino Bravo and Frenchy, Don Muraco, Jake Roberts, and Rick Rude. Robin Leech does a short promo.[spacer height=”20px”]

– Craig DeGeorge Interviews Hulk Hogan from the 3/8/88 Superstars TV Taping. Jesse and McMahon on commentary. Jesse loves that DeGeorge couldn’t announce Hogan as the WWF Champion. I sort of enjoyed that too. It’s your usual Hogan gaga, he bashes Andre and Ted DiBiase, completely ignoring everyone else in the tournament. What-cha gonna do, brother?[spacer height=”20px”]

– The hard sell for WrestleMania IV continues. A promo with Mean Gene and Bob Uecker. Bob asks what a Battle Royal is, Gene explains and Uecker makes the jokes.[spacer height=”20px”]

Match #3: Hercules w/ Bobby Heenan v. Scott Casey. From the 3/8/88 Viking Hall “Wrestling Challenge” tapings, in Bristol, TN. Vince and Alfred Hayes on commentary. We get the typical feeling out process. Hercules tosses Casey out of the ring, but Scott skins the cat back inside and hits a head scissors that send both men to the floor. Scott slams Herc into the steps and back inside with what Vince calls a side suplex for 2 when Herc gets his foot on the bottom rope. Hercules goes to the throat of Casey to take over. Hercules takes Casey down and this time Scott gets his foot on the ropes to stop a pin. Bearhug time for Hercules. Casey sells for a while, the referee Joey Marella checks his arm and Scott fights his way free but runs into a clothesline from Herc. Hercules follows up with a suplex and his signature series of jabs, but Casey starts trading punches and goes for his big bulldog but Hercules throws Casey off in mid-air and picks him up for the Torture Rack submission after 7:12. It was a TV match, Casey with a couple of good spots, but would have liked to seen more offense from Scott here. *1/4

– Heenan and Gorilla at the casino. Heenan is tipping people with hotel room mints. Gorilla is playing Blackjack.[spacer height=”20px”]

Match #4: Greg “The Hammer” Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) v. Lanny Poffo. From Winston-Salem, NC 3/9/88 “Superstars” Tapings in the Coliseum. Vince McMahon and Lord Alfred Hayes on audio inserted commentary. Poffo tosses Frisbees and recites a short poem about Valentine getting a Beefcake haircut. Valentine attacks and away we go. Greg surprises everyone by going to the top rope but he’s met with a punch by Lanny. Poffo with a dropkick and works Greg into the corner. The two men trade some shots with Greg on the winning end. Poffo is tossed outside where Greg sends him into the rail. Back in the ring, Valentine does his lazy man’s suplex on Poffo where the wrestler falls but Greg doesn’t. Some nasty chops from the Hammer, Lanny fights back, but Valentine cuts him off with a stomach breacker and a screwed up Russian legsweep, though props for trying. Lanny reverses an Irish whip but misses a dropkick in the corner. Valentine off the top rope with a forearm, and then the Figure Four and it’s all over after 3:52. It was short, but these guys were just go-go-go, and for Valentine that says a lot. Lanny looked to be fighting for his life in there, he didn’t take no crap or give Valentine any liberties. It was actually an entertaining squash, and I liked seeing Valentine go out of his element a few times. I’ll go * just for the unique arsenal for the Hammer in this one, and the fact that Lanny wasn’t taking no shit in the match.[spacer height=”20px”]

Match #5: Intercontinental Champion Honky Tonk Man (w/ Jimmy Hart) v. Jim Evans. From Winston-Salem, NC 3/9/88 “Superstars” Tapings in the Coliseum. Vince and Jesse doing the commentary. Comments from Brutus Beefcake in the corner of the screen. Honky has his jump suit removed, and he dances, all after the bell has already sounded. HTM knocks Evans off his feet, then hits the sit down clothesline, followed by the Shake, Rattle, and Roll neckbreaker picks up the fast win after 1:30. An obvious DUD, but I’m so happy it didn’t go any longer. Honky had some of the worst squashes.

Honky’s music doesn’t play after the match, and he’s upset. Brutus Beefcake comes out to the interview stage and says he cut Honky’s music off. Brutus then says he will win the IC Title AND cut Honky’s hair at WrestleMania. Spoiler alert, neither thing happens. Brutus is a liar. If you don’t believe me, watch his delusional WWF 1989 Timeline from Kayfabe Commentaries.[spacer height=”20px”]

Match #6: The Junkyard Dog v. George Petraski. From the 3/8/88 Viking Hall “Wrestling Challenge” tapings, in Bristol, TN. Vince and Hayes on commentary. Petraski would end up doing the Russian Brute gimmick in the final year of the AWA in 1990. But here, he needs to trim down immensely as he looks to be 50 pounds overweight. JYD with the usual punching and headbutts down on all fours. Petraski rolls out of the ring. Take two, George returns, and more headbutts from JYD and a big punch sends Petraski back to the floor. Take three, George comes back for more, he goes to Dog’s eyes and tries to slam JYD. Happen, not gonna. Dog rings Petraski’s bell, plays with him for a minute, Dog misses a headbutt and Petraski tries another slam attempt but again fails. JYD comes back with a big clothesline before finishing him with the “Thump” in 3:59. Another actually entertaining squash. 1/4*

– We’ve got Mean Gene interviewing Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant up on stage at a TV Taping. Unlike Hogan, DiBiase acknowledges there are other wrestlers in the tournament, most specifically his 1st round opponent Jim Duggan. Ted spends a minute on Duggan before moving on to trash Hogan. Andre finishes the interview up by saying Hogan will not advance in the tournament. Notice Andre never claims he himself would advance!

– Bobby Heenan is forced to work out on an exercise bike for the duration of the prior JYD match, and he’s exhausted.

[spacer height=”20px”]
Match #7: Ken Patera v. Tom Stone.
From Winston-Salem, NC 3/9/88 “Superstars” Tapings in the Coliseum. Vince McMahon and Lord Alfred Hayes on audio inserted commentary. Patera takes Stone down and grinds on him. Irish whip and a clothesline takes Stone out of the ring. Back inside more methodical beating by Patera, 3 elbow drops and a Full Nelson finishes this squash in 3:42. Unlike the other squashes on the show, this was very slow and plodding, no surprise given who was involved. By 1988, Patera didn’t seem to care anymore. DUD

– Mean Gene with the WrestleMania IV report. Hercules talks Ultimate Warrior, and then the Warrior responds in his usual Warrior ways! Battle Royal talk time, we hear from JYD, Harley Race, and the Bolsheviks with Slick.

– Bobby Heenan continues his workout in preparation for his 6-Man at WrestleMania IV. Heenan is jobbing on the beach before he’s stopped by Gorilla. They discuss the 6-man and more typical Heenan commentary.[spacer height=”20px”]

Match #8: The Ultimate Warrior vs. “King” Harley Race. From Boston Gardens 3/5/88. Gorilla and Lord Alfred on commentary. Race can’t phase Warrior early and ends up taking a big clothesline and then a backwards bump out of the ring off an Irish whip in the corner. Harley takes a funny bump as he slides down the steps head first on his back. They cut to a commercial only a couple minutes in, and then return with Race climbing back inside. The two men butt heads and Warrior takes a bump, Race then inadvertently lands a falling headbutt into the balls of the Warrior. Race tries to take over, but Warrior chops the shit out of him and Harley takes a back flip bump over the ropes and out of the ring. Back inside, Race takes over with a Piledriver that gets a 2 count. Harley tosses Warrior out of the ring. Race tries to suplex Warrior back inside, but Ultimate slides behind the King and performs a reverse rolling cradle for the win after 4:54.Wow, holy shit, Warrior with a rolling cradle, and he didn’t even screw it up. More proof he had some idea of what he was doing out there, contrary to the usual bull stories. Not a whole lot to this match, but everything they did was good. *

– Mean Gene interviews Strike Force about their upcoming Title match against Demolition at WM4. Arriba, and all that good stuff.

– We find out what Gorilla has chosen for Bobby Heenan’s betting loss earlier. Bobby is forced to push Gorilla around Atlantic City in a sight seeing cart. Ultimate humiliation. All of this was thanks to SD Jones! To think SD had such an impact in 1988.[spacer height=”20px”]

Final Thoughts: Well we get the final hype before WrestleMania from Prime Time. They found a way to work WrestleMania IV into everything on the show from the Gorilla/Bobby vignettes to the actual announcing from Vince and Alfred Hayes. I thought I’d be sick of hearing about “Mania” by the end of this show but they honestly handled everything in a way that even though they were ramming it down our throats, it didn’t feel that way. It was like a subliminal message. So I liked that they entertained us with all these little fun matches in between selling the big event. I’m sure the weekend syndicated shows drove the point home to get the show. The Bobby and Gorilla in Atlantic City theme may have been the first of it’s kind. The two would make more “on the road” trips in the coming months/years. We got our big interviews from Hulk, DiBiase, Andre. We got the WrestleMania Update and Report. Every match at the PPV was touched on in some shape or form. I found it odd no mention or play for “Macho Man” Randy Savage at all on the show, but maybe it was planned that way. This was a good PPV lead in show for a Prime Time episode.

Match of the Night: This was a tough one for me because while nothing stood out, overall most of the matches were better than other recent episodes. I guess for overall match you could say the Bees v. Conquistadors match was the “best match”. For talent you have to go to Warrior vs. Race in a okay match for TV. But I think I’d personally to with the match I’d want to see again, and that’s the Greg Valentine squash. The Hammer went outside his usual box of weapons and came up with some stuff I hadn’t seen him use before, plus he went to the top rope TWICE in the same match. A lot of the matches are a coin flip this week, which is ironic based on the casino theme, but it’s true. Any of the matches I just mentioned could be considered the match of the night based on your personal taste.

Back in the ring Cairo goes back to the arm and tags Smith. Patriot able to make the tag. Smith goes right to the arm of Gilbert now. Patriot distracts the ref allowing Smith and Cairo to make the illegal switch a few times. Cairo hits the ropes and Freddie trips him up. This brings out Sherri Martel and she chases Freddie back to the locker room. Meanwhile back in the ring Patriot is in control of Cairo. Paul E. Dangerously comes down to ringside. Patriot throws Cairo to the floor and comes off the top rope onto him with a double axe handle twice. Eddie tags in but misses an elbow drop. Cairo tags Smith and he comes in and lands a fall away slam on both his opponents. Paul E. distracts the ref as Eddie tries to hit Smith with a chain. Smith moves and Patriot gets nailed with it. Smith covers and gets the win at 6.54. Gilbert tackles Smith and puts the chain in his tights and then points it out to the ref. The ref reverses the decision and DQs Smith and Cairo. Gilbert and Patriot argue and shove each other.

Tod Gordon is in the ring and he introduces Shane Douglas who is making his ECW debut. The Dangerous Alliance come out right away and interrupt him before he can really say anything. Paul E. runs down all of Shane’s accomplishments’ and then they hug. Shane Douglas has joined the Dangerous Alliance and Tod Gordon is very upset. Shane puts out an open challenge for $10,000.00 if anyone can beat him.

The team of Don E. Allen and Herve Renesto answer the challenge. Super kick onto Allen sends him to the floor. Belly to belly on Ernesto gets the win in .33.

The Super Destroyers are backstage and they make fun of the Suicide Blondes and call them Smurfs. The two teams face off in the Tag Team Title Tournament next.

Tag Team Title Tournament Round 1 Match (1993-08-07): Super Destroyers vs. Suicide Blondes (w/ Hunter Q Robbins III), ref Jim Molineaux
Robbins is out without the Blondes. He says that he made a huge mistake by not sticking with the Destroyers. He forfeits the match and the Destroyers move on to the next round. Robbins says it was his guidance that brought them the titles. He has a check back stage for $25,000.00 if they sign back with him. Super D 1 says they don’t need him.

Terry Funk vs. Canadian Wolfman, ref Joe Dinoli (from the 1993-07-27 episode review is taken directly from that episode)
Heavyweight Champion “Magnificent” Don Muraco is on commentary with Jay Sulli for this match. They criss cross and Funk stops but Wolfman keeps running. Wolfman gets Funk in the corner and gives him some shoulders and eye rake. Funk fights back and slams Wolfman three times. He follows that up with a leg drop for 2. Spinning toe hold gets Funk the win in 3.13.

Stan Hansen is backstage hyping the tag match coming up at UltraClash. We see the same Tito Santana promo from two weeks ago. “Magnificent” Don Muraco and Freddie Gilbert praise the Dangerous Alliance and running down Santana.

Heavyweight Champion “Magnificent” Don Muraco (w/ Freddie Gilbert) vs. Tito Santana, ref John Finnegan (1993-08-08)
They fight before the bell. Santana throws Freddie into Muraco and they go out of the ring. Muraco backs Santana into the corner but Santana fights out. Muraco goes to work on the arm. Santana fights back after about 4 minutes in an arm bar but misses a corner charge. Muraco slams Santana’s arm into the ring post and then hits a shoulder breaker. Santana reverses a piledriver into a back body drop. Double clothesline sends both men to mat. Tito with a small package but they end up in the ropes. Muraco thumbs Tito in the eye and hits the tombstone but Freddie gets on the apron and distracts the ref. DDT by Muraco and Freddie jumps up again. Muraco is getting pissed. He goes to slam Tito but he slips behind and pushes Muraco into Freddie. Muraco slaps Gilbert turns around and gets nailed with the flying forearm and we have a new ECW Heavyweight Champion in 10.04! Freddie runs to the back before Muraco can get to him.

Jay Sulli is back in the studio to end the show but first he sends us to an interview with Paul E. Dangerously and Eddie Gilbert. Paul E. talks about all the matches that involve his guys coming up at UltraClash. Gilbert says he will not hide behind Abdullah the Butcher and that he will once again prove that he is the ring of Philly wrestling.

My thoughts on the show…
I loved the ending to the opening match. Shane Douglas makes his debut tonight and as we all know he will go on to become one of the greatest ECW wrestlers of all time. Big Heavyweight Title change also gets this show a thumbs up!

TV 1993-08-31 (Matches taped 1993-08-07 and 1993-08-08 from ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA)

Champions
Heavyweight: Tito Santana
TV: Superfly Jimmy Snuka
PA State: Tommy Cairo
Tag: Vacant

We open the show with a promo from Stan “The Lariat” Hansen hyping UltraClash.

Jay Sulli and “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert are in the studio and they welcome us to the show and run down the card. Eddie Gilbert has given Jay a bottle of alcohol for the past three weeks. You see cause it’s funny when someone has a drinking problem. Sulli questions Gilbert about what happened during his tag match last week. Gilbert suggests that Sulli was drunk and didn’t see what happened properly. Gilbert explanation of what he says happened is pretty funny. Gilbert shoots on Jerry Lawler being so old and needing to retire. Gilbert says after the show today he has a date with 6 different women and names the wives of Tod Gordon, Jay Sulli and a few other ECW employees.

Sandman and “Wildman” Sal Bellomo are backstage and they tell the Koloffs to get out of the country if they don’t like it.

Ivan and Vladimir Koloff are going to take about Sandman and Bellomo and move on in the tournament.

Tag Team Title Tournament 2nd Round Match (1993-08-07): Ivan & Vladimir Koloff vs. Sandman & “Wildman” Sal Bellomo, ref John Finnegan
Bellomo and Koloff start. Bellomo with a mule kick and a drop kick and then he tags out. Sandman comes in and gets a 2 count on a school boy. Ivan tags out and Vlad comes in and lands a bulldog. The Koloffs double team behind the refs. Vlad hits his belly to belly finisher but Bellomo and Ivan come in. The ref pulls away Ivan allowing Bellomo to take off his boot and hit Vlad with it. Sandman rolls on top and gets the win in 3.39.

An UltraClash promo airs that gives away stuff that is going to happen on upcoming TV shows. I won’t spoil it for you guys though.

Tod Gordon is in the ring and he introduces all of the competitors that will appear in the $5,000.00 Inter-gender Battle Royal at UltraClash. Peaches, Hunter Q. Robbins III, Tigra, Angel, and Freddie Gilbert all come out cut very quick promos about the battle royal. Everyone leaves the ring once Sherri comes down. Freddie Gilbert returns with flowers for Sherri. Angel comes back down and says that she thought she was Freddie’s women and drags him to the back.

2nd Round Of ECW Tag Title Tournament (1993-08-07): The Super Destroyers vs. “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert & The Dark Patriot (w/”Fabulous” Shane Douglas), ref Jim Molineaux
Gilbert pulls the plug on the match and we go back to the studio. The same guy that Gilbert tried to bring in last week to replace Sulli shows up with donuts for Sulli and asks Gilbert for his autograph. Gilbert plugs his tshirt that you can buy from the hotline. Back to the match which is joined in progress now Dark Patriot hits a DDT on Super D 2 and then makes a tag. Super D fights off Gilbert and makes a tag. D 1 loads up his mask and head butts Gilbert. He makes a tag and hits a running powerslam and covers but the ref is distracted. Hunter Q Robbins III runs up and hand something to Super D 2. #2 drops a head butt on 1 and puts Gilbert on top for the pin at 1.58 shown. Super D 2 helps up #1 and pretends like he doesn’t know what happened.

W*ING Tag Team Champions The Headhunters vs. Miguelito Perez & Mr. Danger, ref John Finnegan (1993-08-07)
They go right to the floor to brawl. Back in the ring Danger is power bombed but he kicks out. Perez is bleeding within the first minute of the match. Perez with a superplex and then he goes up top. Perez comes off with a missile dropkick. The Headhunter rolls to the floor and Perez hits a plancha. Perez nails the Headhunter with a chair to the head that busts him open. Tag to Mr. Danger and all 4 men come into the ring. Perez misses a 2nd rope senton. Headhunter with a moonsault he goes for the cover but Danger and the other Headhunter come in the ring. The first Headhunter gets off his cover and Danger gets a small package. Splash on Perez and NOW the ref counts. Each team has a man pinned and the match is declared a no contest at 4.59. So the legal man had a pin attempt but the ref didn’t count it. Then the illegal man had a pin and the ref didn’t count that then both teams had pins and he counts that?

Heavyweight Champion Tito Santana & Stan Hansen vs. “Fabulous” Shane Douglas & “Magnificent” Don Muraco, ref John Finnegan (1993-08-08)
Hansen and Douglas start off. Hansen with the early advantage and he makes the tag. Santana sends Douglas to the floor and he tags Muraco when he gets back in. Santana takes over on Muraco tags into Hansen and we break away to go to the highlights of Abdullah the Butcher. Back to the match and Douglas has control over Santana and tags in Muraco. Douglas and Muraco tag in and out a few times neither man doing much. Santana reverses a suplex and both men make tags. Hansen throws Muraco to the ropes for the lariat but the ropes break. The rest of the Dangerous Alliance hit the ring causing a DQ in 5.27. Eddie Gilbert goes to throw fire into Hansen’s face but he moves and it hits the Dark Patriot.

My thoughts on the show…
A major heel turn today as the longest running tag team in the company split up. A wild brawl from the wrestlers of W*ING, and a literal hot ending to the main event gets this show a solid thumbs up.

Vince Russo On Last Night’s RAW, Bray Wyatt Bigger Than WWE, Reigns, Hulk, Affair Angle, Kane

0

Source: PyroAndBallyhoo.com

Vince Russo’s latest RAW review is up at PyroAndBallyhoo.com. Here are a few highlights, courtesy of WrestlingINC.com reader @RampaigerRob:

– He opens up by talking about the untimely tragic passing of Robin Williams, mentioning that he had a lot of personal demons. Russo shifted the discussion to himself and talked about how he has battled personal demons.

– He says that Paul Heyman is amazing at delivering promos, but that this one wasn’t anything different from what we previously saw.

– The handicap match made no sense to him because the heels lost the match via DQ. He says that it was booked as a DQ to protect the heels, but since Reigns destroyed Rybaxel anyway after the match it was all pointless.

– Criticizes the direction of Kane. Realistically, who isn’t? He changes character like every three months and never truly feels important. Russo thought that turning in the mask could have sparked an interesting story but as we all saw, Kane is just Corporate Kane again. He then goes on to criticize WWE’s booking of Kane even further, saying that this is a guy who should feel important. At one point he suggests Kane adopting a schedule similar to Undertaker which would be interesting.

– He said it was stupid for Seth Rollins to suspect that Dean Ambrose was inside the giant present, because it gave everything away. That’s true, and the segment would’ve worked much better as a total surprise.

– He enjoyed the whole affair angle. He did criticize the acting of Megan, though.

– He enjoyed the sitdown interview with Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt. He feels that Wyatt is bigger than WWE and should be in Hollywood.

– He criticized The Miz distracting Dolph Ziggler because it was repetitive after the Paige/AJ segment. He noted that Miz has no heat in this feud.

– He enjoyed Hulk Hogan’s birthday celebration, but felt that the special guests should have been promoted throughout the show.

– He feels that Brock Lesnar and John Cena should have closed the show brawling .

Russo also discussed John Cena’s promo on RAW, RVD vs. Seth Rollins being pointless, Rusev note getting enough heat heading into SummerSlam, Brie getting arrested, heel psychology and more, you can check out his full RAW review by clicking here.
