Underground TV 2003-07-07 (Matches taped Hybrid Hell 2003-06-20 from War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla)

Champions
World: Steve Corino
GTC: Simon Diamond & CW Anderson

Almost all the matches that will air over the course of Underground TV have been previously reviewed from the home videos so these will be short recaps.

The show opens with a video package highlighting the rise of the Extreme Horsemen in MLW.

Opening Video.

Joey Styles welcomes us to the show and discusses what went down last week in the main event.

“Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels (w/ Jerry Lynn) vs. Billy Fives
TV exclusive! Two weeks in a row! Fives gets a really big reaction Joey tells us he’s a local. Fives slaps Daniels. Daniels gets mad. Fives takes down Daniels and puts on a headlock. Daniels comes out and takes control of the arm as we go to commercial. We come back and Fives blocks a urinagi and hits a neckbreaker. Fives fires away on Daniels and hits a back body drop and clothesline. Fives runs up Daniels knee and then leg drops him down to the ground. It looks cool. Daniels with a downward spiral and best damn moonsault ever. Fives barely kicks out. Fives blocks a suplex and then hits a reverse brainbuster for 2 and a half. Fives blacks a slam and hits the last rites on Daniels. Lynn hops up on the apron to distract Fives. Daniels hits a last rites of his own and gets the win. 4.23 was shown.

Back to Joey and he talks about the Paul London and Jerry Lynn feud. Next match is at the next taping and Joey acts like this match wasn’t supposed to happen a month ago. Some strippers and the Extreme Horsemen come out of a limo and don’t say much.

Footage of Sandman’s return at Hybrid Hell is shown. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams pulls up to the arena and is attacked from behind by the Global Tag Team Crown Champions. CW Anderson and Simon Diamond attack him from behind. Williams gets busted open in one of the weakest looking beat downs I have ever seen. They slam his hand on a plastic dumpster top, hit him with his duffle bag and slam him onto a pile of dirt. None of this seems like it would hurt, his hand might sting a little but that’s it. CM Punk meets up with Simply Luscious back stage and he trash talks Raven to her. He tries to get her to go straight edged. Joey tries to figure out which of the two men she has history with.

Francine was backstage getting ready to film a commercial for MLW.com when Norman Smiley snuck up behind her and pretended to bang her. Michael Shane runs in and yells at him to get out of there. Some nonsense from Joey. Homicide talks about how he’s paid his dues after being in prison.

Mike Awesome is in the parking and is angry about losing the MLW Title. He says that at Rise of the Renegades he is going to knock out Corino. Mike Awesome and Terry Funk are tied for the number one contendership. Steve Corino gets to pick who his next opponent will be. We go to Corino and he lets us know that it will be Awesome who gets the next shot. Corino says that if Funk wants the next chance they will do it the old school way with a contract signing.

Main event time. La Parka didn’t show up for his match with Sabu so Mikey Whipwreck took his place. Sabu won the match but afterwards Christopher Daniels and Jerry Lynn attacked and seemed to join forces with Mikey and Sinister Minister.

My thoughts on the show…
Thumbs in the middle. We get an exclusive match so that’s cool. The Mikey/Sabu match was alright.

Underground TV 2003-07-14 (Matches taped Hybrid Hell 2003-06-20 from War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla)

Champions
World: Steve Corino
GTC: Simon Diamond & CW Anderson

Almost all the matches that will air over the course of Underground TV have been previously reviewed from the home videos so these will be short recaps.

Highlights from the main event last week. Bill Alfonso says he’s tired of getting sent to the hospital every time he comes to MLW. He goes to get stitched up as Sabu heads to the parking lot. Sabu gets jumped by Jerry Lynn and Mikey Whipwreck and has his face slammed into their car door a few times. They get in the car and drive off.

Opening video.

Joey runs down what’s happening tonight. We go to the opening match. Homicide and Michael Shane had a nice back and forth match. Homicide pulled out a victory with a quick roll up. After the match Shane and Francine argued in the ring. Shane grabs Francine and makes like he’s going to punch her but instead the hug.

A Raven and CM Punk video airs to hype the shows main event.

Sinister Minister talks about how Mikey Whipwreck was abandoned by all his friends. Mikey plays with a rubber ducky and they laugh like crazy people at the end. This was so very awesome.

Sandman and “Dr. Death” Steve Williams take on CW Anderson and Simon Diamond in singles matches at Rise of the Renegades. If they win they will get a tag title match in August.

We learn about the feud between Jerry Lynn and Paul London. They are set for a 2 out of 3 series. If London wins 2 he gets a contract and Lynn wins London is gone for good. Bill Alfonso says they are out for revenge at Rise of the Renegades. Sandman and Dr. Death bust into the Extreme Horsemen’s locker room and attack them. A bunch of other guys run in and pull them out.

Next week Los Maximos takes on the Samoan Island Tribe.

CM Punk with help from Michael Shane beat Raven in the main event. Afterwards a tag team match was made between Raven and Norman Smiley against CM Punk and Michael Shane.

Champion Steve Corino says that he will take on everybody in the locker room. He puts a bounty on Terry Funk

My thoughts on the show…
Thumbs up on this episode… Two good matches and a great Sinister Minister promo.

Underground TV 2003-07-21 (Matches taped Hybrid Hell 2003-06-20 from War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla)

Champions
World: Steve Corino
GTC: Simon Diamond & CW Anderson

Almost all the matches that will air over the course of Underground TV have been previously reviewed from the home videos so these will be short recaps.

Joey Styles of course welcomes us to the show and runs down Rise of the Renegades. Los Maxioms are backstage and they dump a bunch of thumb tacks on the floor and then go kick in the door of the Samoan Island Tribe’s locker room. The Samoans charge and step in the tacks hurting their feet. They chase Los Maximos to the ring and that starts our first match. The Maximos were able to sneak out a victory by pinning Mana. We see footage that wasn’t on the home video of Joel and Samu fighting outside of the arena. Joel locked Samu out of the building and that’s why Los Maximos were able to get the win.

CM Punk says Raven has lost his edge and is not the same man he used to be. Simon Diamond and CW Anderson say they will face Sandman and “Dr. Death” Steve Williams anytime and any where if they can first beat them in singles matches.

Da Hit Squad make their debut this Saturday at Rise of the Renegades. Paul London will again not be there to face Jerry Lynn so Lynn has put out an open challenge. Lynn and Christopher Daniels cut an awesome promo where Lynn is attacking so over the top it’s just great. Sinister Minister and Mikey Whipwreck enter the room. Mikey still has his duck. Minister says they have things to talk about and should have a meeting soon.

Joey Styles interviews Homicide but just gets pushed off camera. Homicide says the same thing he’s been saying the past few weeks. Josh Daniels says he’s coming to MLW this Saturday. Ugh I’ve trained with him and I can’t stand him.

Joey talks about the Terry Funk bounty. Raven is backstage and he says that he has not lost his edge and he has picked a partner that Raven will have to be twice the man with in order to beat Punk and Michael Shane.

Joey runs down the card for Rise of the Renegades. The Extreme Horsemen are backstage celebrating Corino’s title win from a few weeks ago. They talk about how great they are.

Mike Awesome says that on Saturday he’s taking out the Horsemen and Corino. He then pretends to get on a motorcycle and makes motorcycle noises but then “rides” backwards off camera.

Los Maximos yelling about how they kick the Samoans ass. They have signed an open contract for Saturday.

In the main event Kenzo Suzuki beat Norman Smiley. Joey hard sells Rise of the Renegades and wego to a video package for the show.

My thoughts on the show…
The only thing on this show that was any good was the Sinister Minister promo. Leave this episode behind.

Underground TV 2003-07-28 (Matches taped Revolutions 2003-05-09 from Tabu Night Club in Orland, Fla & Hybrid Hell 2003-06-20 from War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla)

Champions
World: Steve Corino
GTC: Simon Diamond & CW Anderson

Almost all the matches that will air over the course of Underground TV have been previously reviewed from the home videos so these will be short recaps.

A very long recap of last week airs which is weird because nothing that was actually important happened. Wow we don’t even get to Joey Styles until 10 minutes into the show.

We go to the ring and get the three way Texas Wrestling Academy match from Revolutions. Masada deated Fasted Eddie and Don Juan in a match that had about 374 blown spots and should have never been allowed on TV.

Global Tag Team Crown Champions CW Anderson and Simon Diamond are in the locker room. Diamond says people should be thanking them for bringing back tag team wrestling. Anderson says the wrestling world should be prepared for them. A video package of the feud between CM Punk and Raven airs. They show Simply Luscious in the video also. I’m not entirely sure how she fits in here.

Kenzo Suzuki cuts a backstage promo with subtitles. I didn’t read it. Joey talks about the issue taking place between Sabu and Mikey Whipwreck. Bill Alfonos walks about how him and Sabu keep getting sent to the hospital but keep coming back. Joey hypes Hybrid Wrestling. Los Maximos call themselves the best team in the world. They challenge anyway to a match. Generic promos by both Homicide and Josh Daniels. For some reason the World Champion Satoshi Kojima video package airs even though he lost the title on TV weeks ago.

We go to the presentation of the Global Tag Team Crown Championship. I wonder if since it has aired on TV they will get actual belts now. The ceremony was interrupted by “Dr. Death” Steve Williams. Williams and D-Lo Brown challenged for the titles but were unsuccessful.

My thoughts on the show…
Ten minutes of replays from last week and a terrible opening match makes this week one to skip over for sure.

CM Punk Talks To ESPN SportsCenter About Vince McMahon Vs. Dana White, More

0

Credit ESPN and Raj Giri

CM Punk did the media rounds on ESPN today and made an appearance on SportsCenter. Here are some highlights from the interview:

– On why the change from pro wrestling to MMA, CM Punk asked “why not?” Punk said that while he’s probably not ready to fight today, he would fight anybody right now. He said that he’ll get there by training and honing his skills.

– Punk said that MMA incorporates so many fighting styles and that everyone’s really well rounded, and that’s how he’ll have to come in. He once again said that he was most comfortable on the ground, and his ground game will get better as he makes his debut.

– Punk was asked about UFC welterweight Matt Brown calling him “a dumb athlete.” Punk thanked Brown for calling him an athlete, and admitted to being a fan of his and called him “an awesome fighter.” Everyone has an opinion, and Punk understands where a lot of the naysayers are coming from. He said that his job is to do what’s best for himself and his family, and that he hopes that he can turn some people around.

– On Vince McMahon vs. Dana White, Punk said that “they’re both driven, they’re both set in their ways. They both have an idea of what is best for their company.” He said that they are different in the difference in the generation. Punk said that Vince is very old-school, while Dana is more open-minded. Punk added that there was “more of a warmth on the UFC side” than he expected.

– Punk finished the interview by noting that people have always said that he couldn’t do certain things, and he uses the negativity to fuel himself and prove people wrong.

Mick Foley Says WWE Wanted Him To Work Monday’s Christmas Themed RAW

0

– As announced on Raw, Hulk Hogan will be returning to WWE RAW on Monday’s Christmas themed show. Mick Foley says he turned down an offer to appear on the show, presumably as Santa Claus. Foley wrote on Facebook:

HO HO HOGAN?

What about FO- HO-HOLEY?

I appreciate so many people jumping to my defense at the announcement of Hulk Hogan as the special guest for the Christmas episode of WWE Monday Night Raw. All of your “what about St Mick” and “Foley is Santa” comments are much appreciated.

But the truth is, I was asked by WWE if I would like to travel to Minneapolis for Raw, but had to turn the opportunity down, due to a prior commitment. I’ll miss it. I’ll watch, and probably wish I was there. But as important as appearing on Christmas Raw is to me, honoring a commitment means just a little bit more.

I have really enjoyed being part of the holiday season in my own small way in WWE, and hope to be part of the Christmas episode in 2016.

So don’t hold it against the Hulkster or WWE, I wasn’t forgotten or disrespected in any way. Just previously engaged.

Steve Austin Talks About Working On His Own Brand Of Beer

0

Steve Austin revealed that he is still working on his own private-label brand of beer in the recent Q&A with Rolling Stone that we covered. Austin said:

“I can’t really announce anything yet but we’re working on the paperwork right now. I’m also working on another lifestyle-orientated thing that I’m excited about too, but since you brought the beer up, I’m anticipating getting everything finalized so I can get in the tasting room, come up with the formula and create the beer. It’s almost a done deal.”

Lanny Poffo On WWE Inducting Randy Savage By Himself, WWE’s New Macho Man DVD, More

0

Interactive Wrestling Radio sent the following:

We had the unique opportunity to interview Randy Savage twice back in 2003 and 2004. It was a true childhood dream come to pass. Now, over 10 years later, we sit down with Randy’s brother, “The Genius” Lanny Poffo to discuss the job the WWE did on the new “Macho Man” Randy Savage Story DVD available now. The result? An hour long interview that gets more real than we expected.

You can read the big topics below but the whole interview has to be heard to be believed. To hear it in MP3 format or on YouTube, check out wrestlingepicenter.com/news/2014//419845807.shtml” target=”_blank”>this link.

“THE GENIUS” LANNY POFFO OVERVIEW:

How the new WWE DVD on Randy Savage came to be:
“When I agreed to it, I had no idea it would go so well!” He has high praise for the producer, Kieran Bent, stating he handled it beautifully and was extremely nice to his mother even buying her flowers. “My mother was asked if she’d be a part of it and originally refused. She was still mad at WWE for not offering her their condolences on the passing of my father and my brother. But, I said “Mom, this is not for the Macho Man. It is for the Macho Fan”. The needs of the many outhweigh the needs of the few.”

His take of the overall finished product:
“I took a look at it almost with one eye closed because I was so nervous how it was going to come out. But, I was very impressed with it. Now, it wasn’t perfect in my estimation. Here is where I have to talk very carefully. I want you to know that I realize that without Jimmy Hart and Jerry Lawler, we never would have gone to Memphis. And, without Jimmy Hart, we would never have gone to the WWE. Don’t think for one moment that I’m not appreciative of Hulk Hogan for giving a journeyman 4 months of main events. I don’t want to complain, point fingers, or name names. But, I would like to shout out to every main event jabronie that disgraced themselves on my brother’s DVD by making fun of the way that Randy treated Elizabeth. You are all divorced. All of you! All of you are divorced! How dare you question my brother. What did you want him to do? Let Elizabeth shower with Brian Knobbs? Is that what you wanted? I mention Brian Knobbs because he was always trying to earn his name of Nasty Boy. I would have wanted my own locker room! There were people putting Halcion in people’s drinks. There were people using people’s suit cases as toilets. It was like National Lampoons Animal House! My brother was just a no nonsense guy in a world full of nonsense. I would say he was a better husband than Chris Benoit, wouldn’t you say? How come all of these people are divorced?”

The critical approach of the DVD on how Randy treated Elizabeth backstage:
“Randy was a hard guy not to be jealous of. Now that he’s dead, you’d think they’d get over it. What I would like to do is take all these main event, sorry ass jabronies and put their marriage under the microscope and lets examine them.”

The positive contributors (wrestlers) to the DVD:
“I called Gene Okerlund, Diamond Dallas Page, and Bret “The Hitman” Hart personally and thanked them for their contributions to my brothers video. Watch it again and see if they don’t resonate with you.”

His brother’s not-all-that-well-known charity work:
“Randy was a saint. Randy loved, loved, loved the Special Olympics,” said Lanny. “Randy would show up in full regalia. And, When you thought it couldn’t get better, the WWE used to send a mountain of T shirts, posters, baseball caps. And, I used to stand back and watch my brother give the items to the athletes of the Special Olympics, I used to think “Wow, what a good man my brother is. And, what a good company (WWE) we work for.” WWE was giving away all that stuff, the same merchandise you could buy at the arenas. Now, you have to say that is pretty good! No organization does more for the less fortunate than the WWE and for all those who point fingers and laugh, what have you ever done?”

If he’d have liked to have had the McMahon’s or Shawn Michaels on the DVD:
“I would have liked to have Pat Paterson not be on it”, Lanny says without missing a beat. “Here’s why. There was a battle royal for old times in the Meadowlands. Randy blamed Patt Patterson and Chief Jay Strongbow for their influence on Vince McMahon for my father not being allowed in that battle royal. Randy thought he had the stroke to get it done. The sad thing is, Randy wasn’t on the card. The main event was “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and Harley Race. For whatever reason, Duggan couldn’t make it. Randy took his place. Every one of them (the legends) came up to him and asked, “How’s your dad? Where’s your dad? How come he isn’t here?” That made Randy feel worse that he couldn’t get it done. It was a very small thing for Randy to ask for. Two days later, Chief Jay Strongbow is in the locker room with a cast on his arm and a sling. Randy says, “What’s the matter with your arm?” Strongbow said, “Lou Thesz broke my arm when he threw me over the top rope.” Randy said, “Lou Thesz didn’t break your arm. You broke your own arm because you’re too fat and you’re a disgrace to the business.” From that day forward, he had a long face in the locker room.” He continues, “Here’s the difference. Jay Strongbow was a 24/7 anal sphincter. Pat Patterson had a wonderful personality and was fun to be around. But, still smug. Randy blamed Pat Patterson for using his influence on Vince McMahon for not allowing my father to be in an old man’s battle royal that wouldn’t have hurt anybody if they had added one extra guy. It was like having a party and you’re not invited, even if you beg me.”

If he and Randy made it possible to be a “smaller” guy in a “big man” world:
“Yes. But, Randy was medium size in a big man’s world. Rey Mysterio is tiny in a big man’s world and he made it work because he is good.”

CM Punk:
“I guess we all heard the greatest shoot interview of all time? I never met CM Punk but I love him”, says Poffo. He credits Punk for wearing the Macho Man tights the RAW after Randy passed away and for continuing the legacy with the big elbow.

Randy’s final project on Gorgeous George (George Wagner):
“Randy felt bad that he gave his girlfriend the name Gorgeous George”, Lanny explains. He explains that Gorgeous George had convinced Angelo Poffo not to quit wrestling and become a school teacher when he was thinking about getting out because he saw something in him. Just a few years later, George Wagner died in a slop house after having made over 9 million dollars between 1960 and 1963. Angelo called Betty, George’s wife, and she told him that they couldn’t afford to give him a proper funeral. Angelo said, “You’ll give him a proper funeral and send me the check”, explained Lanny. “This is the man Pat Patterson called cheap (on the DVD).” Poffo sounds extremely upset by the “frugal” remarks made about his father on the DVD. He explains that he watched it with his mother and she takes a very negative view to anyone being critical of her husband and son.

If he’ll bend on Randy’s wish to have the Poffo family go in as a 3-man-team or allow him to go in solo:
“Ok, I am bending and let me explain why. The day I turned 59, it finally hit me I’m the older brother. There were a lot of times in my life, being the Macho Man’s brother and Angelo’s son, I didn’t get my way. As the last man standing, I am now. So, I told my mother I’m willing to allow the WWE to put “Macho Man” Randy Savage in the Hall of Fame by himself. I’m not going to have a blinking contest with Vince McMahon. He’s got balls of steel and he’s willing to cut off his nose to spite his face. I’m just not man enough to do that, fellas. I can stand up to a lot of people but not him. He’s got more guts and brains than anyone I’ve ever met. Even Randy would have told you that,” says Lanny. “What is the Hall of Fame anyway? It isn’t for the Macho Man, it is for the Macho fan and they are the ones that made him great. I’m sorry, Randy. I hope that you’re not mad at me. Maybe we’ll find out later.” Lanny does go on to say that he’s not been officially asked yet, no one has officially called him, but he has come to the conclusion in his mind that if they will not induct all 3, which he seems they have been disinterested in doing, he now has accepted that he will allow Randy to go in solo.

Plus, on the video and in the MP3 you can hear his take on if Miss Elizabeth should be in the Hall of Fame, a funny story about himself and Curt Hennig on the Regis show back in 1990, and more defenses over his father being “frugal” as described on the DVD. The DVD is available on shelves everywhere and at WWEShop.com.

Fighters File Lawsuit Against UFC: Current, Former UFC Fighters Included

0

A potential first step towards a class action lawsuit against the UFC was taken this week, as a group announced their intent to sue the world’s top MMA organization.

The group, led by Jon Fitch, Cung Le and Nate Quarry, held a press conference in San Jose Tuesday to state that they’ll be “identity class plaintiffs” and hope to add more names. Le is currently on the UFC roster, while Fitch and Quarry are former championship contenders for the brand. The successful lawfirms Joseph Saveri Law Firm, Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, and Berger & Montague are all involved.

The lawsuit accuses the UFC of violating the Sherman Antitrust act via elimination of competition. This leaves the UFC as the only viable promotion in which these fighters can earn a living in comparison to where they would elsewhere else.

“This lawsuit really is about fairness,” said Quarry. “It’s about a fair market value for the athletes. Over and over again, we’ve seen that’s just not been the case. The UFC has taken over the entire industry and dictated its terms upon the fighters without any say. We don’t have any rights. It’s the word that comes down. It’s time for those things to change. We deserve to reap the fruits of our labors.”

During the press conference, a comparison was drawn to the NFL as “the only game in town,” but says that there are multiple teams within that league driving up competitive prices for the athletes involved. The UFC’s controversial sponsor policies are also mentioned, as the UFC doesn’t permit sponsors that have previously shown allegiance to other brands or rival promotion’s fighters. The complaint filed against Zuffa referred to Bellator MMA as a “minor league” to the UFC.

The suit will be open to “All persons who competed in one or more live professional UFC-promoted MMA bouts taking place or broadcast in the United States during the Class Period. The Bout Class excludes all persons who are not residents or citizens of the United States unless the UFC paid such persons for competing in a bout fought in the United States.”
