WWE Invites Chael Sonnen And Wanderlei Silva To Talk During WrestleMania 31 Weekend?

0

Source: TSN

Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen said on TSN’s Off The Record that WWE called him about meeting to talk during WrestleMania 31 weekend in Santa Clara, California. He said that WWE also invited former UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva to the event to talk.

“I got a call, WWE said, ‘Look, we got WrestleMania, we have a Hall of Fame show coming up in March. If you want to come out, come out, we want to talk to you about some stuff.’ They laid out at that,” Sonnen said. “If they are buying me a plane ticket, they’re giving me a ticket to the show, I do enjoy that product.”

“I don’t know what we are talking about, but I’ll give you a little bit of a scoop: Wanderlei Silva was also invited. I don’t know if he’s accepted and I don’t know if the two are related, but there you go.”

This is especially interesting with WWE reportedly announcing a partnership with MMA apparel company Tapout soon. We’ve reached out to WWE for comment and will keep you updated on the story.

ROH Reportedly Dealing With Financial Problems, Wrestlers Used For Pitch To Sinclair, More

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Ring of Honor is currently dealing with a lot of financial issues that basically come from Sinclair Broadcasting, which owns ROH, not getting more behind the company.

COO Joe Koff met with head officials at Sinclair back in December to try and get them to expand the budgets for 2015 and 2016, pushing the idea that ROH could become the #2 wrestling promotion in the country. Koff brought Adam Cole and The Briscoes to the meeting for them to do pro wrestling style promos on how TNA was losing steam moving to Destination America and that ROH could become #2 in the US. The pitch reportedly failed.

ROH’s December pay-per-view, their second show on standard PPV, did just 8,000 buys and that didn’t help things either. The 8,000 number is said to be under the company projections but not by a large number.

Sinclair officials told Koff to be more disciplined with spending this year. There’s a feeling that Sinclair wants ROH for consistent programming on their network but are not interested in investing a lot or taking chances to build them.

These financial issues are the reason why talents like Roderick Strong, Maria Kanellis and Mike Bennett aren’t under contract. As noted before, TNA, Lucha Underground and New Japan Pro Wrestling all have interest in signing the duo of Kanellis and Bennett.

Original Plans For Daniel Bryan & Roman Reigns At WWE Fast Lane, Update On Reigns Vs. Lesnar

0

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

As noted, Daniel Bryan will now face Roman Reigns in the main event of WWE’s Fast Lane pay-per-view with the winner facing Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31 for the WWE World Heavyweight Title. Original plans for Fast Lane had Roman Reigns defeating a top heel, possibly Big Show, and Bryan being used to put Bray Wyatt over to keep him strong for The Undertaker.

Regarding booking for Bryan, WWE wanted to put him into a feud with Sheamus for WrestleMania 31 but his opponent was switched to Dolph Ziggler after Bryan reportedly requested the change. It’s possible that Bryan vs. Ziggler still happens.

For what it’s worth, people handling the actual promotion of WrestleMania 31 were still under the impression that Reigns vs. Lesnar will be the main event as of this week and in the promotional material, Reigns is to be the most heavily promoted, followed by Lesnar and John Cena. It’s worth adding that WWE has not included Sting in any of the WrestleMania promotional material and since he’s all but confirmed for the event, his involvement will be a major selling point so new material should be released soon.

Update On The Team Of Cesaro & Tyson Kidd

0

– We noted before that Tyson Kidd, Cesaro and Adam Rose had been wearing calling themselves The Brass Ring Club and wearing t-shirts with a logo that was similar to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Bullet Club. The nickname and shirts were done because officials told Cesaro and Kidd to come up with an idea for their tag team. They brought up the Brass Ring Club name and people thought it was clever. No word yet if the name will be accepted for full-time use or not.

Havoc goes for a sunset flip, but Angelico double foot stomps him. Angelico hits a beautiful flip over the top rope to Havoc and lands on his feet. Back in the ring, Angelico only gets a two count.

Havoc misses a shooting star press but lands on his feet. Angelico goes for Fall of the Angel, but Havoc turns it into a huracanrana. Ivelisse kisses him, but he accidentally knocks her off the apron and gets rolled up for the pin.

Winner: Pentagon Jr via submission

– Dario Cueto is shown backstage, warning someone of the woman that came looking for him.

Drago vs. Aerostar

Aerostar hits a huracanrana, enziguri and slinghsot double stomp for a two to start out. Aerostar jumps from the bottom rope inside the ring all the way out.

Back in the ring, Drago slams Aerostar down by his face and dropkicks him. He then hits a corkscrew flip to the outside. Aerostar does a handspring elbow where he flips, but doesn’t post his hands for a handspring. Drago blockbuster DDT’s him for the win.

Winner: Drago via pinfall (blockbuster DDT)

The two shake hands after the match, which Striker calls the “code of honor.” Well.

Cage vs. Johnny Mundo

Cage comes out with the Lucha Underground World Title that he ripped in half. He hits a hiptoss backbreaker to kick things off. Mundo battles back with some kicks and a foot sweep. He then hits a weird looking spin kick when Cage is hung up on the ropes.

Cage powerbombs Mundo into the ring post, and takes him back inside for a short arm clothesline. King Cuerno appears, watching the match. Cage works Mundo over, and jumps from the second rope to the top and misses a turnaround moonsault.

Mundo hits a couple of clotheslines and a calf kick, followed by a knee to the face. He gets two on a reverse DDT, but Cage gets two right after with a sitout Alabamaslam.

Mundo fights back, and hits a breathtaking spinning dive to the outside. Cuerno attacks the leg of Mundo, causing the DQ.

Winner: Johnny Mundo via DQ

Cuerno destroys Mundo’s leg after the match with a chair. Dario Cueto restarts the match. Cage jumps on Mundo, and moves away from a Mundo kick, causing him to kick the ring post. Cage applies the stretch muffler, but can’t get a tap from Mundo.

Mundo manages to hit Moonlight Drive, but only gets two. Cage catches him and hits him with an F5, but Mundo somehow kicks out! A Mundo sunset flip gets two, but Cage blasts him with a discus clothesline and a reverse STO out of a Gory special for the win.

Winner: Cage via pinfall (Gory Special reverse STO)

– Cueto is in his office, and Alberto El Patron shows up to close the show!!

Enzo and Big Cass kick off the show. Enzo works the mic and the crowd goes along with it. They bring out Carmella to something of a mild reaction. She tells the crowd that Blue Pants “went back to the clearance rack.” Out comes Emma for a match. The crowd is all for her.

Emma vs. Carmella
Emma gets in a few shots off the bell but Carmella powers up and takes control. Emma comes back with a big clothesline and works Carmella into a submission move. Emma smacks Carmella in the head but Carmella comes back with a drop toe hold and gets Emma into a submission hold, prompting Emma to tap out.
Result: Carmella defeats Emma via submission.

We get a glimpse of some coming attractions and a short break before getting back to the big show.

Adrian Neville vs. Baron Corbin (#1 Contenders Tournament Semi-Final)
The announce team plays up the size advantage as the competitors lock up. Corbin works Neville to the corner and they break. Neville fires back but gets caught off the rope briefly. He keeps at Corbin, making sure the big guy stays on the defensive. Corbin grounds Neville with a big right hand and Adrian rolls out of the ring. Corbin fetches him and once they’re in the ring, he picks Neville apart on the mat. He stays in control for a protracted stretch and tries to put Neville away with a slam but Adrian kicks out. Neville continues to fight with forearm smashes and he propels Corbin face first into the turnbuckle to shift the momentum. Neville hits a dropkick that puts Corbin outside of the ring. Neville follows with a dive and Corbin catches him and chucks him into a barricade. As the ref looks away, Bull Dempsey runs in and whoops Corbin. Corbin gets away but Neville resumes his offense, hitting a splash and flowing with a pinfall.
Result: Adrian Neville defeats Baron Corbin via pinfall.

We see a short segment in which Sami Zayn talks about the rivalry with Kevin Owens. Zayn says he’ll beat the hell out of Owens at NXT Takeover. After that, it’s announced that Corbin and Dempsey will square off in a No DQ match at takeover.

Bayley vs. Becky Lynch
Sure, Bayley is a fan favorite but there’s a strong Becky Lynch contingent on hand in this crowd. Becky works Bayley’s knee early and often, following with a suplex and work off the ropes. Bayley tries to come back but Becky is just too tough at this point in the match. Bayley does dump Lynch outside and Banks comes down the ramp and Becky gets back in to fight. She stays on Bayley but almost gets rolled into a pinfall. Bayley tries for a submission maneuver and Becky gets to the ropes. Lynch tries to escape but Banks puts her back into the fray. Bayley capitalizes, getting the pinfall.
Result: Bayley defeats Becky Lynch via pinfall

Post match, Sasha and Becky start fighting and Charlotte comes out, seemingly to reign it all in.

WWE racks up an interview with Kevin Owens in which he explains that it was his ultimate goal to get a title shot and Zayne gave it to him… just two months into his time in NXT.

Hideo Itami vs. Finn Balor
Balor and Itami lock eyes and then they get right to it. First they lock hands, break and then come together again. When they really get grappling, it almost looks like an even match. After some twisting and grappling, they break, stand back and assess one another as the fans voice their approval. Itami tries to get on top of Finn on the mat but Balor won’t make it easy. Itami hits the ropes and Finn gets him with a solid dropkick as we go to break.

Back after the commercial, Itami is back up and he has control of Balor for the moment. Finn breaks loose and heads to the ropes but Hideo takes him down and tries for a cover. Finn gets back into it and works Hideo into an unusual stretch hold followed by a cover. Itami kicks out and Finn covers again, but no dice. Balor stays on top of things, locking in a choke on Hideo. He continues with the mat work but Itami wriggles out and ascends the ropes. Balor connects with a kick, putting Hideo on the canvas. Another break ensues. As the match resumes, Balor is chopping the holy bejeezus out of Hideo. Itami comes back with a dropkick and then hits a clothesline. Itami goes into full offensive mode now, putting Balor’s neck into the rope and then cracking him with a kick. Itami teases the GTS and they trade counters until both guys are down on the mat. When both men reach a vertical base again, they trade huge shots. Itami finally gets the advantage with strikes and kicks, following with a corner dropkick but Balor takes him out with a sling blade and then a big dropkick. He hits a double-stomp off the top and after a three-count, it’s over.
Result: Finn Balor defeats Hideo Itami via pinfall.

So with that, it’s official: The #1 Contenders Match will be Adrian Neville versus Finn Balor.

After the bell, Finn Balor extends a hand to Hideo Itami and Itami accepts the gesture in a nice display of sportsmanship. Adrian Neville applauds from the announce table. The men shake hands on the ramp to close out the live-action part of show.

They also play a retrospective of the Zayn/Owens rivalry heading into Takeover. That should be a great fight

Champions
World: Sandman
TV: Shane Douglas
Tag Team: Gangstas

Spike Dudley vs. Axl Rotten, ref John Finnegan
Rotten has some serious heat with the fans. Axl makes fun of Spike for being so small. Spike out wrestles Axl which I mean isn’t very hard. They fuck up an arm drag spot. Axl takes it to the floor but then refuses to use weapons to piss the fans off. First thing he’s ever done that I enjoyed. Fans chant boring so Axl locks in a chin lock and says “I can stay here all night”. Fans are getting crazy pissed. Spike with a tornado bulldog for 2. He goes up top and hits a cross body for 2. Back up and a missile drop kick gets 2. He goes up a third time but Axl decapitates him with a clothesline on the way down and gets the win in 8.49. WOW Axl puts on a match with no extended brawling on the floor and zero weapons and it was somewhat enjoyable.

Gorgeous Quartermaine vs. Roadkill, ref Jim Molineaux
The masked GQ still as emotionless as always. Pretty sure he yawns while making his entrance to the ring. Joel Gertner handles the ring announcing duties for this match so he can help with the mask gimmick. Gertner does a really good job of getting this over. Match is clipped appears we just missed lots of stalling from GQ. GQ in control hits a few drop kicks and a powerslam for 2. Roadkill makes a comeback hitting a clothesline and suplex for 2. Roadkill off the middle buckle with a clothesline gets another 2 count. Roadkill goes up top but misses a big splash. GQ comes back with a swinging neck breaker and finishes things off with a top rope leg drop. 6.05 was filmed. Basically the same match they had last week.

Super Nova vs. Chris Candido, ref John Finnegan
Some nice quick back and forth counters ends with Nova hitting a drop kick and a rana. Candido goes to the floor to slow things down. The strategy works as he takes over back in the ring hitting a suplex. Candido goes for a super belly to back but Nova reverses it and lands on top getting a 2 count. Spinning heel kick sends Candido to the floor but then Nova misses a dive to the floor. Candido does the same thing as Axl where he picks up a weapon but then doesn’t use it. Candido goes low 2 times in a row. A couple of nice reversals back and forth and both men end up on the top rope. Nova throws Candido to the mat and comes off the middle buckle but gets power slammed. Nova comes back and hits a bulldog for 2. Candido goes low again to regain control. Nova with a drop kick off the second buckle but then he misses a clothesline and gets German suplexed. Candido comes off the top but Nova gets his foot up. Candido fights off Nova and goes up top but gets cut off and superplexed. Nova goes up top now but Candido stops him hits the super bomb and gets the win in 8.44

The Eliminators vs. Little Guido & David Tyler Morton Jericho, ref Jim Molineaux
Guido seeing action for only the second time this month here. Eliminators get a big reaction from the fans. Saturn and Gudio start off. Gudio gets in some offense early on hitting a side slam and getting a few near falls. Saturn however hits a powerslam and tags Kronus. Some double team kicks and Kronus tells Guido to tag. Morton comes in and he Guido double team Kronus. Saturn however comes into the ring to break that up. Morton goes for a rana but Kronus sits out into a power bomb. More double team kicks. Total elimination on Morton ends it in 3 minutes on the dot. Ever since Kronus dropped some weight they have added a bunch of new kicks to their arsenal and really seem to have a new life to them.

Rob Van Dam vs. Taz (w/ Bill Alfonso), ref John Finnegan
Taz gets on the mic and says he is not going to wrestle between now and Holiday Hell. Alfonso distracts Van Dam allowing Taz to attack from behind. Van Dam comes back with some kicks. Taz goes to the floor so Van Dam flies out after him. Van Dam with a body slam and he quickly goes up top and comes off with a leg drop for 2. Taz catches Van Dam and hits a belly to belly when we hear the b.W.o. theme song hit! The action in the ring comes to a stop for a bit while the b.W.o. pose on a stage. Taz attacks Van Dam to get things back going as the b.W.o. leave. Van Dam gets a chair and throws it at Taz and kicks it into his face. Taz ducks a clothesline hits a t bone and locks in a tazmission. Van Dam tries to kick off the turnbuckle to get a pin but it only gets a two count. Van Dam gets to the ropes! Very surprised to see someone get out of the tazmission. Taz doesn’t break and almost immediately a bunch of guys come from the back to try and pull him off Van Dam. The fans want Sabu. Call this a no contest in around 4.45. I don’t mind the finish but the guys came out from the back WAY to fast. Would have liked to see more of a match between these two but it seems they are saving it for Holiday Hell next week.

D-Von Dudley vs. Buh Buh Ray Dudley (w/ Sign Guy Dudley), ref Jim Molineaux
Buh Buh hits the ring and they go right at it. D-Von with a belly to back for 2. They fight it out in the ring and we are 2 minutes in and haven’t gone to the floor yet. In the middle of typing that sentence they went to the floor. D-Von with the advantage using a chair and the guardrail. D-Von goes up top but Buh Buh shakes the ropes. D-Von then nails Buh Buh with the chair as Buh Buh goes over to him. D-Von comes off the top with the chair but it gets drop kicked into his face for 2. D-Von comes back and lands a rocker dropper on the chair. D-Von comes off the top with a head butt that gets 2. Buh Buh reverses an Irish whip. D-Von ducks a line and a back elbow but then Buh Buh hits a flapjack into a cutter for the win in 6.42. Gertner announces that D-Von one based on points. D-Von is back up but Buh Buh nails him with a chair. Axl Rotten comes from behind with a chair and nails Buh Buh. Sign Guy and Spike get in on the action but are taken out also. Tag Team Champion New Jack hits the ring to make the save. New Jack on the mic afterwards but who the fuck needs to listen to him. This match isn’t bad but I’ve seen them do it like 4 or 5 times now.

Pitbull 2 vs. Rick Rage, ref Jim Molineaux
Rage attacks before the bell to get the upper hand early on. Rage comes off the second buckle with a double axe handle attempt. Pitbull catches him puts him back on the turnbuckle and gives him the super fall away slam for the win in 1.52. It was odd to watch him catch Rage and put him back on the buckle to give him the move as opposed to just knocking him down while he was already on the ropes and doing it.

TV Champion “The Franchise” Shane Douglas (w/ Francine) vs. Tommy Dreamer (w/ Beulah), ref John Finnegan
Dreamer hits the ring and they go right to it. Dreamer takes the belt and nails Shane with it. Chair to the face of the champ for a 2. Tommy in control but then he ducks his head for a back drop and Shane hits a swinging neck breaker. Piledriver gets a 2 count for Shane. Shane goes to work on the knee of Dreamer. This is spot for spot the same as the 11-23 show except after Dreamer hits Francine with a piledriver at the end “Primetime” Brian Lee comes out and nails Dreamer with a chokeslam. Shane then hits the single arm DDT to retain in 10.06. Pitbull 2 saves Beulah from the belly to belly.

World Champion Sandman vs. Raven (w/ Lori & Tyler Fullington & b.W.o.), ref Jim Molineaux
Stevie Richards gets on the mic and calls everyone in the crowd gay and says the only reason they are there tonight is to try and bang him. Blue Meanie and Super Nova do their Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan impressions. Raven attacks Sandman in the crowd during his entrance. They work their way to the ring where Raven hits a piledriver for 2. Sandman fights back so Richards comes in and nails him with a steviekick. Back to the floor they go where Sandman takes over. Back in the ring Raven with a quick DDT. Sandman fucks up a ref bump spot so then he hits the ref with a chair. DDT and cover but there’s no ref! Lori comes in but Sandman spanks her. Raven from behind with a cane to the head and DDT on the chair. It gets 2.8. Richards and Meanie come in to help out. Meanie goes for an avalanche but Sandman pulls Raven in the way hits a DDT and gets the pin in 7.23.

My thoughts on the show…
I enjoyed this show quite a bit. None of the matches felt like they dragged on and the show runs a quick hour and forty five minutes. Even the 3 matches that have been running on every show haven’t totally bored me yet although I’m getting there with the Raven Sandman feud. Hopefully with Holiday Hell and the new year coming up they will switch things up a bit.
