WWE Legends Discuss Randy Savage, Poffo Says “Stephanie Rumor” Isn’t True

Source: SI.com

Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog has a lengthy new article up on 2015 WWE Hall of Famer “Macho Man” Randy Savage at this link. The piece features quotes from Savage’s mother Judy, his brother Lanny Poffo and other legends. Here are some highlights:

Jerry Lawler on feuding with Savage:

“The first time we worked together, when it was ‘promotion against promotion,’ we sold out at the arena with 23,000 people. That was unheard of in wrestling. But Randy was so cool. He was a great athlete, and he was a little bit out there. He had a bit of a temper, and he was moody at times, but he was his own guy. I really grew to respect him.”

Steve Austin on Savage from his early days on:

“Macho Man, that guy’s stuff back when he was in Tennessee, was incredible. His intensity, his promo style—he was the Macho Man 24/7, 365—and he was that before he got to the WWF. Vince [McMahon] didn’t make him, he made himself. Vince then made him a superstar all over the world.”

Gene Okerlund, Hulk Hogan and Ted DiBiase on Savage’s relationship with Miss Elizabeth:

Hogan: “If you even looked at Elizabeth the wrong way, then, Holy s—. Randy would freak out. If you ever wanted to get him lit up, you’d just have to look at Liz.”

DiBiase: “I would never consider having my wife around a bunch of wrestlers. Randy tried to protect Elizabeth, but that created some tension between the two of them.”

Okerlund: “Randy was a loose cannon. In the early days, Randy was very protective of Elizabeth to the point where it bothered a lot of the boys. But what could you do, take it to Vince McMahon and make yourself look like a powder puff? You just ignored it and worked with it.”

Daniel Bryan on Macho Man:

“I’d love to be this era’s Macho Man. There are a lot of similarities between the two of us. He was so good and just had that connection with the crowd. You can watch him to this day, he’s so entertaining.”

Ric Flair on their WrestleMania VIII match:

“We brought the best out in each other. When you have that kind of chemistry and respect for each other, it doesn’t take a lot of thought-process to go out there and make music in the ring. Randy was still playing minor league baseball when I first met him. I was there in his corner during his infancy in the business, saw him blossom and become so much better. I was proud of him, and wrestling him at WrestleMania was awesome.”

Sting on their friendship:

“Randy Savage, ironically, is one of the guys I looked up to. I loved him. He was so out far out there with his character. There was something about it I could identify with. I used to tease him a little bit in the dressing room in front of all the guys, and say, ‘Come on, just talk in your normal voice.’ ‘This is my normal voice, what are you talking about?,’ he’d say. It was funny. We’d always try to get him, but I never heard him talk any other way than just like this, brother! Living the character helped him, absolutely it did.”

Lanny Poffo on a Triple H interview that led to a the infamous Stephanie McMahon rumor that Lanny says is not true:

“A reporter asked [WWE heavyweight champion] Triple H what he thought of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. Triple H responded with, ‘They were great, but they’re dinosaurs.’ Randy saw this as a deliberate attempt to hurt his brand. Randy insinuated he [wanted] to take Triple H, slap him in the face, take his girl, Stephanie McMahon [the daughter of Vince McMahon and the wife of Triple H], and drive her around the block, then give her back to him,” Lanny says. “It wasn’t right, but Randy was provoked.”

Lanny Poffo recently did an interview with the folks over at WrestlingINC.com. Lanny discusses why Randy never returned to work in WWF after he left for WCW and he also reveals Randy’s true feelings for Vince despite their lengthy schism. “Macho Man” Randy Savage will be inducted into this year’s WWE Hall of Fame. Here are just a few interesting tidbits from the interview.

Lanny cited WWF’s decision to not use their father Angelo Poffo in a “legends” battle royal as a tipping point in Savage’s feelings regarding the company.

“On November 6, 1987, Randy started to hate WWE,” Lanny recalled. “They said Killer Kowalski, Pat O’Conner, Lou Thesz, Bobo Brazil is gonna be [in the battle royal]. My dad looked at Randy and said, ‘There’s a battle royal on the Meadowlands, can you get me on it?’ Dad was always proud of how good he looked, and he still did. Randy said ‘don’t worry, it’s done,’ and thought he would have the stroke to do it. Later Randy grabbed me by the wrist and says, ‘(expletives), they’re not gonna let Dad in the battle royal because they’re no good (expletives).’

Poffo added that despite the rift that developed between Randy Savage and Vince McMahon, Randy was very appreciative for all Vince did for the Poffo family.

“I just wanted to say Randy was a great man,” Lanny said. “He was also a good man, and I think that’s even more important. Randy knew deep in his heart that he was thankful to Vince McMahon for all he had. He was 32 when he finally got his break and the window of opportunity was closing. Whatever small argument they may have had, I think it’s just ridiculous to not see the big picture that Randy loved Vince and Vince loved Randy.”

WrestleMania Set Designer On What To Expect This Year, Ryback And Ziggler

0

– Ryback and Dolph Ziggler are wearing the new Microsoft Band to track their movements and fitness while in California for WrestleMania 31 week. You can track their activity on WWE’s website at this link.

– WWE’s website has an interview with Jason Robinson, the man who designs the sets for WrestleMania events. He commented on what to expect from this year’s set:

“Expect something different from us. The atmosphere being West Coast and daylight presented some very unique challenges for us to overcome. The structure itself isn’t really tied to a particular thing like the city or arena, but we have this really unique thing where we can’t hide anything. We have to be open, [because] everybody’s going to see everything. I can’t do the theater magic and hide the bad parts. So we’ve had to work really hard. Everything had to tie in and feel like it was part of the image and the structure. It’s a unique set, a unique way of lighting the ring because of the sun. You’ll see some different search lights around there, and from a lighting point of view and the set, we’ve had to deal with having full sun on the set because you can’t hide anything. You’ll see it’s a different set from us this year.”

Why WWE Is Really Concerned About Daniel Bryan’s Future, Talk On His WrestleMania Role

0

Source: PWInsider Elite

Regarding why Daniel Bryan is in the WWE Intercontinental Title Ladder Match at WrestleMania 31 instead of the WWE World Heavyweight Title picture, it’s not that WWE doesn’t see him as a big part of the company or a top competitor, but one of the reasons is that there is still major concern over his health.

Bryan chose to undergo a unique form of rehabilitation for his injury last year and there is a strong fear within WWE that his injuries could become reoccurring issues due to the rehab he did. There’s concern that the rehab Bryan chose is not a long-term permanent fix and just a short-term fix that could cause the problems to relapse.

It’s likely that Bryan would be in a more prominent position at WrestleMania this year if WWE officials weren’t worried that the elbow issues will come back.

Bryan’s situation was compared by one source to Kurt Angle having several non-invasive surgeries on his neck years ago but over time Angle ended up having a lot of other issues stemming from the neck injury.

Austin revealing that he won’t be in person at WrestleMania surprised several people within WWE as he was scheduled to arrive this weekend. Apparently WWE also had plans in place for Austin once he arrived.

No word yet on why Austin isn’t coming to Santa Clara but it’s enough of a situation that it has become a hot topic among the WWE staff this week.
