Xavier Woods On WWE Dropping Militant Gimmick, Choosing PHD Over WWE Title, New Day

0

Xavier Woods appeared on the latest episode of the PodNasty Wrestling Podcast and discussed the scrapping of the militant black gimmick, original plans for the New Day and why Woods would rather be a PhD than a WWE World Heavyweight champion. They sent us these highlights:

Why the militant stable was dropped:

“Wrestling is a never-ending storybook so sometimes you start going one direction, but the beauty of it is we could go in whatever direct we want but things just changed. For what reason, I’m not exactly sure, but it’s WWE and you kind of just go with the flow.

“It ‘s one of the things you learn when you get hired is it is an ever-changing and ever-evolving living breathing workism, so the best way to stay afloat is to just go along with the things that are occurring around you.”
?”I’m not sure why things changed, but in light of recent developments of New Day it’s great that they did because to me rather than someone just coming out and the character just being there, it’s nice to be able to see that character evolve over time.”

Why he thought the New Day would succeed as babyfaces:

“We had a couple of different schools of thoughts. We thought this would occur, that people would be into it, because it’s maybe one of the only positive things on television, because you turn on the news and there’s death, murder, car crashes and everything.

“Here’s a positive thing with three guys, all college educated, all college athletes, all very eloquent so we’ll preach a positive message like ‘do well in life and go to school, make sure you work out you could be big and strong like E, make sure if you stretch a lot you can be flexible and agile like Kofi and make sure if you read your books you could be smart like Woods.’ And then we realized after a few months it turned into ‘people don’t like those who are happy.’

“So it’s kind of like a play on society, essentially, people of American society. Back in the 80s, if someone’s happy, someone’s doing well, someone’s getting hardships, you cheered for that person.

“But now it’s 2015, and they don’t like that. They want someone who’s grimy and who doesn’t like people and who doesn’t smile and isn’t happy and wants to punt a puppy across a football field. If that happened, people would be watching and it would get 3 million views on YouTube because it’s something that’s horrible so essentially society has created this thing where people like to see car wrecks, and they want to see a hot mess and they want to see a fall from grace. So if you don’t have those things people are going to boo you because that’s not entertaining to them, they want to see a mess, they want to see somebody fall on the sidewalk and bust their lip on the ground. They don’t like nice things.”

Why he’d choose a PhD over a WWE World Heavyweight Championship:

“I feel like we have the opportunity as WWE Superstars to make some sort of impact on lives whether it’s one kid or whether it’s an adult.

“Yes, guys have been WWE World Heavyweight champion, and it’s amazing, I take nothing from that at all. But if there’s a kid who’s out there in the world watching wrestling and they see me and they know I have my PhD while I was wrestling, that could possibly inspire them to not drop out of school, to not drop out of college, to go and obtain that type of educational status, and that to me means a lot more.”

Jim Ross Blogs About ESPN Special, Roman Reigns, UFC Creating Stars Better Than WWE

Source: JR’s BBQ

Jim Ross posted his most recent blog where he spoke out about the Roman Reigns and ESPN specials, as well as the UFC’s ability to create stars. Here are the highlights:

The ESPN Behind The Curtain documentary:

“Enjoyed the E60 piece on ESPN Tuesday night and Ben Howser did a great job producing this one hour story that he worked on for parts of two years. It was an intriguing look behind the scenes and proved that wrestlers are better “cast” or “booked” when they are as close to the real person as possible. The Adam Rose character is a great example of that opinion. The real life person is much more compelling than the fictional, TV persona that the South African portrays. Casting or “booking” is a delicate matter but any “booker,” if that role even exists in today’s world of TV wrestling, has a better chance of finding the next, viable or big thing if the TV personas are closely related to the individual portraying the TV character. Nonetheless, the story told on ESPN was excellently done and all involved should feel good about i as I believe it helped WWE and certainly added more credibility to the value of the Performance Center which is truly the heartbeat of the WWE and the key driver to the future of the company. Fans pay to see stars and developing stars as stars make every championship viable, or not, and are the key components to any storyline written.”

Roman Reigns special on the WWE Network:

“For example, WWE did a fantastic job on the recent, Roman Reigns feature on the WWE Network. This show was excellent and did as much for Reigns as any thing WWE has done for him to date IMO. One has to wonder how much it would have helped Reigns if something like this show aired prior to WM31 and, specifically, on a three hour RAW before if aired on the Network. With the popularity of these close up look shows at various fighters and MMA stars, I would consider putting a shortened version, 10-15 minutes, of these types of shows within the three hour RAW’s as it would greatly enhance getting talents over and creating the emotional investment the fans must have for a talent to become a star and do it in front of WWE’s biggest audience plus serve as a great promo to encourage fans to see more of it on WWE Network.”

UFC creating stars better than WWE:

“One reason boxing isn’t where boxing fans want it to be is because they have done a poor job of developing stars and stars drive any sport. UFC has learned how to do features on their fighters and consequently UFC is being more successful in creating new stars such as Conor McGregor, among others.”

Steve Austin On WrestleMania 31, If He’ll Be There Next Year, Relationship With Vince McMahon

0

Stone Cold Steve Austin was the subject of a feature on Sports Illustrated today, and spoke about several subjects, including his relationship with Vince McMahon, and next year’s WrestleMania. Here are the highlights:

On plans changing at this year’s WrestleMania:

“Vince called and said, ‘Here’s the set-up, Hulk Hogan’s going to come out and he’ll cut a promo. All of a sudden, they’re going to hit The Rock’s music. He’ll go out and cut a promo. All of a sudden crash, it’s Stone Cold’s music, and you’ll go out and cut a promo – then bam, we start WrestleMania XXX.’ That’s the way it was pitched to me. The Rock and I were in the building the day before in the green room, Dwayne and I were laughing and shaking hands and hugging, just shooting the breeze. I said to him, ‘What are we doing tomorrow?’ All The Rock knew, he told me, was that he was the last one out to the ring. I said, ‘They told you that you were going to be the last out? That’s real interesting, ’cause they told me the same damn thing.’ I’m thinking to myself, ‘This is bull,’ this is not what I was sold, this is not what I bought. But I said, ‘I’m just going to let this thing slide. We’re here and there is no use in making a stink about it.'”

His relationship with Vince McMahon:

“At times he’s been like a father figure, a brother, a mentor, a best friend, and an enemy. That was a short window of time when I say enemy, but we were at odds every now and again. This is a high-stakes business that is extremely personal.”

Possibly being at WrestleMania next year:

“There was no creative for me at WrestleMania XXXI. Now with WrestleMania XXXII coming up in Texas, I would be pretty damn sure I’m going to be there. It’s my home state and it just makes more sense.”

Austin also opened up on his run, his nixed plan at WrestleMania 30, and a lot more. You can read the full feature at this link.

Bill DeMott Breaks Silence, Talks About Being NXT Head Trainer

0

Former WWE NXT head trainer Bill DeMott has broken his silence since resigning from the position over two months ago amid accusations of bullying, harassment, sexist and racist comments. DeMott appeared on Vince Russo’s new podcast to talk about why the blame was cast in his direction:

“I always use the term it’s never the quarterback, it’s the coach,” said Demott. “Millennials, I think right that’s what this generation is called the millennials. I think it’s in the whole world. So what I can say and what I will say is as a dad as you are, as I am, I try to figure that out to keep my children away from that entitlement.”

WWE Chairman Vince McMahon infamously used the term “millennials” when expressing his frustration over the lack of ambition among the WWE roster while on an episode of Steve Austin’s podcast. DeMott elaborated on his comments to a degree after Russo insinuated that DeMott had to coddle his students.

“I guess it’s old school that you get what you earn and you try to earn what you want,” said DeMott. ‘I think that’s all I am going to say about that because I think no matter what the case, Walmart, Publix, IBM, I always use IBM I don’t know why, I go to a lot of management seminars and that’s a lot of the conversation, the opening conversation: ‘What do we do when they don’t like that?’ And I want to walk out because I’m not going to learn anything if I’m still trying to figure out. It’s tough, it’s going to be tough for whoever has to figure out what they want tomorrow.”

Manny Pacquiao Getting Sued, UFC Fighter Says MMA Is Bigger Than Boxing, Huge Grappling Event

0

– A San Diego Lawyer, Abbas Kazerounian is attempting to sue Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank boxing after the fighter said he went into his bout last weekend with Floyd Mayweather with a torn rotator cuff. The fans claim that Pacquiao and the company defrauded viewers by saying that he was healthy.

It’s also worth noting that if Pacquiao is injured, he lied to the Nevada State Athletic Commission prior to the fight by refusing to disclose the injury. Pacquiao had surgery on his shoulder this week.

– Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos added fuel to the boxing vs. MMA fire after watching the huge Mayweather vs. Pacquiao show this week. Despite the huge attention the fight got, JDS told Ariel Helwani he thinks MMA is bigger.

“When I can I watch it because I love boxing, I really like to watch a boxing fight, but it’s hard to be watching, especially here in Brazil. When I can, for sure I watch it,” he said. “For sure, the UFC and MMA became way bigger than boxing. Of course, the athletes in boxing make a lot of money, that’s the biggest difference. For sure, we are as famous as they are. We are bigger than boxing now.”

– Metamoris will run their sixth event this weekend, and feature several big names from MMA in their grappling event. Former UFC Heavyweight champion Josh Barnett will use his catch-wrestling base to take on the Brazilian jiujitsu based Ryrion Gracie in a heavyweight title fight, and Chael Sonnen will also compete against former UFC fighter Renato “Babalu Sobral.” Joe Lauzon and Jeff Monson will be on the show as well.

Metamoris is a grappling show promoted by the Gracie family. The athletes compete in 20 minute matches with no points given. If fights don’t end in a submission, the competition is deemed a draw.

WWE Files Motion To Dismiss Gilbert Lawuit, MSG Network Producing WrestleMania Documentary

0

– The MSG Network is currently producing a special that will cover the first WrestleMania. The target release for the special is late 2015, and the channel has contacted several performers from the show to participate.

– WWE filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit Doug Gilbert and the estate of Eddie Gilbert filed, according to PWInsider. The motion adds that WWE “invested heavily” in obtaining, producing and distributing the footage, “without which the works alleged in Plaintiffs’ Complaint would not exist. Gilbert was alleging that WWE and ESPN were using his likeness without his permission.

WWE also pointed to cases from Doug Somers and Steve Ray as previous lawsuits that didn’t work out in court. ESPN has filed a similar motion.

Bob Backlund Reportedly Interrupts Verne Gagne Eulogy

0

Source: F4WOnline

Last month, we heard the unfortunate news of legendary wrestler and promoted Verne Gagne passing away at 89. He’s widely considered among the most important men in the business, and responsible for the training of major names in the business as well.

His funeral was held last week in Minnesota, with eulogies by his son Greg Gagne, and former employee “Mean” Gene Okerlund. Unfortunately, it seemed as if things went downhill from there.

During the eulogy being delivered by Greg Gagne, the Wrestling Observer says that Backlund interrupted and started cutting a heel promo. It was said to be “ridiculously out of place.”

Backlund, a 2013 WWE Hall of Famer, has been sporadically involved with wrestling for several decades. He was the only man to hold the WWF title in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He was also known for making ridiculous demands when fans asked for autographs, such as suggesting the fans should have to recite each U.S. President in order before signing.

We’ve reached out to more sources for comment, and hope to have an update on the situation.
