Ric Flair On His Reaction To Dusty Rhodes Passing, Dusty’s Influence On WWE NXT, Dustin, More

0

– WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair recently spoke with Doug Mortman and Dave Lagreca on Busted Open to remember wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes. You can hear Busted Open on SiriusXM 92 and on the SiriusXM app or at BustedOpenNation.com. Below are highlights:

His initial reaction to the passing of Dusty Rhodes:

“If Dusty Rhodes came on the scene tomorrow at 25 years of age Vince McMahon wouldn’t have enough money to pay the guy. He was that good… in the ring and on the mic. They don’t make them like him anymore – he was that good. And he was a genius. I used to say “Hey what are you doin’ man?” and he used to say “I’m genius-ing”(laughs) It used to crack me up the things that came out of his mouth. He was genius-ing so… that’s it, you know? We made music for 30 years together. I started my career idolizing him and … the good thing about this, if there is a good thing to it, is that I spent about 4 hours with him on Tuesday at the Performance Center in Orlando when I was done there visiting my daughter and the last thing he said to me was … pissed off that I was going to see LeBron James and he wasn’t, ha. He was like “Get out of my office… go see LeBron man, I don’t care (laughs). I said “I’ll wave to you from courtside … and then I got the call yesterday so … we had so much fun together. He loved John Elway, I like Lawrence Taylor. He liked the Celtics, I liked the Lakers. He liked the University of Texas and I liked Oklahoma. We just went round and round on everything, it was tremendous. He loved sports and he loved life.”

His first memories with Dusty:

“I idolized him. I was being trained by Verne Gagne but Dusty and Dick, his partner Dick Murdoch were in Minneapolis wrestling and the charisma was too much and he liked me. I had just gotten married and I wasn’t even booked in the towns and I would drive all the way … 300 miles… somewhere in South Dakota just to hang out with those guys and I wasn’t even booked. No wonder I couldn’t stay married. “How much money did ya make?” “Well, uhhhhhh” (laughs). Jesus, I just couldn’t get enough of him. He was too much man. Then he moved into an apartment, he and Murdoch did. The nicest apartment complex in Minneapolis at the time .. 3 blocks from my mamas house. Ah jeez, it was just the best. All they had was two saddles, some blankets and they kept their mule in the apartment. It was the best. I was in the business 3 weeks and I went to Japan with them and they made me carry their bags with them everywhere for 3 solid weeks. Threw my clothes out the window of the top story of the hotels… took a fire extinguisher to my room. Murdoch stabbed me for taking one of his French fries. And we would get on a train or driving or riding the bus and all Dusty would go “Dear John, I hate to write you…” as if my wife was leaving me or something (laughs). Nobody can say I didn’t pay the price when I started man.”

Thoughts on Dusty as a wrestler:

“They are never going to say he was a great technician but he could work! He knew his limitations but I’m gonna tell you right now… I wrestled Dusty Rhodes at least 300 one hour draws. Dusty wasn’t a 10 minute guy. We wrestled hour draws and I think the defining moment in our careers was that I was Charlotte and Dusty was from Tampa Florida… Originally from Texas … but our careers were established in Southern parts of the world and I wrestled Dusty in the Checker Dome in St. Louis for Sam Muchnick’s retirement… 20,000 people, it wasn’t the ‘Briscos and the Funks’ … It wasn’t Harley … it wasn’t Brody and me. It was me and Dusty Rhodes — that’s how big that feud got. It got World-Wide attention on TBS. And the Horsemen against Dusty and The Road Warriors – Dusty and Nikita and Sting… The War Games … all of that stuff he created. Starrcade… he created all that stuff. That was all Dusty Rhodes, nobody else thought of that. And those War Games, man, we did 42 of them in a row. That’s cuttin’ yourself every night 42 days in a row. Of course me and him… we did it every day anyways, so it didn’t matter but it was work but we had so much fun that it didn’t seem like work … and everything was sold out.”

Dusty’s influence on the younger generation:

“The reason he was at NXT, which worked out being a huge advantage for people going through it is, because of his phlebitis, which was, you know, he’s been iIl with different things off and on for years but whatever caught up with him this time was much more severe than phlebitis, but he couldn’t fly more than an hour at a time without landing and walking around, even when he came to WrestleMania this year he had to go through Dallas and walk around for 3 hours before he could fly the last 3 hours. He would be up in Stamford, right. Him and Vince healed everything and Vince… there’s no doubting Dusty’s genius. His main direction was teaching the kids, helping them learn how to be confident and helping them learn how to carry themselves and be fluid on the microphone. Some kids never get that but it wasn’t because he wasn’t there and, I mean, he was the best. My daughter is so crushed, of course she has known Dusty since she was born, you know, when we were living together in Charlotte. He bought a car, I bought a car. He bought a new house, I bought a new house. That was living the dream. Anyway… my daughter is just crushed over it so she’s up in Cleveland tonight, where I was last night, then she is in Columbus tomorrow and I’m on my way right now to Orlando from Tampa to do a documentary on Dusty right now at the Performance Center. I think they are going to have the funeral Wednesday in Tampa and I would expect a huge turnout. He’s the guy… everybody loves Dusty Rhodes, that’s just the way it was and I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

How’s Dustin holding up?

“Dustin sounded OK. He was there. He moved from Gainesville to Orlando several months ago. I thought that, down the road, Dustin will be an instructor at NXT, which is great for him. And I think that he and his dad had really gotten tight. He sounded OK, I mean, how do you ever sound? I went through something like this a couple of years ago with my son, I mean, how do you ever sound? And what do you ever say? You never know what’s the right thing to say, know what I mean? I’ll get a better feel of how they’re all doing when I see them in person.”[spacer height=”20px”]

Fox appears in the above video previewing the upcoming season and she mentioned on Instagram on Friday that she was in Mexico with her “sisters”—The Bella Twins, Natalya and Paige shot have been posting photos of themselves online at a resort in Tulum.

The press release also previews the main storylines for Season Four. In regards to Eva Marie, she “becomes public enemy number one when word gets out that WWE has big plans in raising her profile.”

THE POWERFUL WOMEN OF WWE® RETURN IN SEASON FOUR OF E!’S “TOTAL DIVAS” PREMIERING TUESDAY, JULY 7 AT 9PM ET/PT

The Bella Twins™, Natalya™, Eva Marie™, Paige™ And Naomi™ Are Back With Their Hit Series Followed By The Series Premiere Of “Hollywood Cycle” At 10pm ET/PT

Los Angeles, CA, June 11, 2015 – E!, WWE® and Bunim-Murray Productions’ “Total Divas” returns for its highly-anticipated fourth season on Tuesday, July 7 at 9pm ET/PT. “Total Divas” continues to give the exclusive, outside-the-ring look at WWE’s top Divas, and this season all it takes is just one spark! The Bella Twins™ (Nikki and Brie Bella), Natalya™ (Nattie), Eva Marie™, Paige™ and Naomi™ (Trinity) are back and ready to heat up the summer. The ladies will continue to give viewers an inside glimpse on balancing life in the spotlight with the drama of their personal lives, and the non-stop action of their professional careers, taken to new heights with Nikki Bella as the current WWE Divas Championship titleholder.

Season three of “Total Divas” remained a powerhouse for E!, reaching 1.73M Total Viewers and 1.12M Adults 18-49 in L3 ratings, solidifying its spot as one of the network’s hottest programs. In the season three finale, the Bella Twins were contemplating signing a three-year deal with WWE, but were reluctant to commit because Brie wanted to start a family and Nikki was looking into alternative business opportunities. While the Bellas were considering the next step in their careers, Natalya, Eva Marie and newcomer, Paige, were all working on their respective romantic relationships. Paige decided to put an end to her budding romance after realizing that they just weren’t a match. Nattie and her WWE Superstar husband, Tyson Kidd™, were working through the ups and downs of their second year of marriage, and Eva Marie and her husband put their relationship, as well as her relationship with WWE, at risk when he began working as her manager.

This season, emotions will rise as all of the ladies must truly learn the art of harmonizing their rocky personal ventures and their in-ring personas. Brie Bella struggles with the injuries endured by her husband, WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan™, as well as their fertility issues. Nattie has to overcome some personal obstacles her father is battling, meanwhile dealing with her sister moving in with her and her husband. Eva becomes public enemy number one when word gets out that WWE has big plans in raising her profile. Paige lands a role in WWE Studios’ film “Santa’s Little Helper” co-starring WWE Superstar The Miz™ and wearily ventures into a new romantic relationship. Trinity navigates the unfamiliar terrain of being a stepmom to the children of her husband WWE Superstar, Jimmy Uso™, while also transitioning her in-ring character from a hero to a villain. With each Diva now becoming a serious contender for Nikki’s WWE Divas Championship title, this season is sure to be a knockout.

Season four of E!’s hit “Total Divas” returns on Tuesday, July 7 at 9pm ET/PT followed by the series premiere of E!’s “Hollywood Cycle,” a never before seen look inside the uber-popular, highly competitive world of indoor cycling at LA’s Cycle House.

“Total Divas” is produced by WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions. Gil Goldschein, Jeff Jenkins and Russell Jay are Executive Producers for Bunim-Murray Productions. Kevin Dunn and Chris Chambers are Executive Producers for WWE.

The transition to TNA and being a “big man”:

I was focused on reestablishing my work. Especially during the end of my time in the WWE and I feel like I wasn’t able to do that. For me it was important to get back to what I think is important and that is building your work. I spent so much time under Double A and Dean Malenko. I’ve never wanted to be labeled as a “big guy”. I feel like the term big guy is a crutch and gives you an excuse to be lazy in the ring. I don’t work like that. Since being in TNA I don’t do that. There is nothing worse then seeing a guy getting hit in the face with a dropkick and not taking a bump. TNA is allowing me to work like that. I like the slow build. I am reestablishing myself and building a new persona. I’m not piggy-backing off my time in the WWE, although I really enjoyed my time in the WWE. I like the ability to build something new.

Being booked as a monster vs. a comedy act:

My frustration was why can’t you do both. You can have an Apollo Creed entrance but when the bell rings why can’t you be Clubber Lang in the ring. My goal was to bring the two things together. You need time in the ring for that and people to give you the ability to do what you do. I don’t like the body-gurard role. I don’t need anyone in front of me. I never have. As the Funkasaurus I established that. The sititauton with EC3 is different. My presence is adding to EC3 and elevating the whole story and is more of a game changer. When you are not booked to the level of your potential it is frustrating.

Wrestlers not being given the platform to excel and break through:

You see it happen all the time in the WWE. Guys who should no doubt be on the top of the card and be main eventers. Guys like Cesaro. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be on his second World Title run, guys like Jack Swagger, Big E the list goes on and on of guys that are there right now that could change the game. The Triple H factory as I call it seems to be the running the show and the ratings result in it. Hopefully someone is able to change that and break through. The last guy to break through was Daniel Bryan and he was able to be bigger then the machine. If this was 20 years ago the fans would have crazy choices of people to choose from. There were so many stars. I feel like that has been taken away from the fans.

Having choices to work outside WWE:

There are so many Independent promotions that are growing. The International scene is growing. TNA is kicking again, Global (GFW) is coming up, Lucha, Big Time Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Syndicate it seems like the territories are kind of coming back again. I was in Oklahoma and we were wrestling infront of 2500 people. People have a choice and it is different. Maybe 5 years ago there wasn’t many choices but now things are kind of changing and its exciting to be a wrestling fan. I’m having the time of my life. I love what I am doing. I am my own boss, I am traveling all over this continent and I am busy as hell doing what I want to do. To me, Indy kind of represents not the machine. The majority of the wrestling world is aware that there is something else out there an there are stars out there. My popularity continues to grow outside of WWE and I really don’t look back.

Tyrus also discusses his departure from WWE, his goals for TNA, working for Dixie Carter, EC3, the transition from NXT to the main roster and back to NXT, his transformation to the dancing Brodus Clay, politics, being a fan and learning from Alberto Del Rio.

I first met Dusty Rhodes at 5yrs old when me and my family were spending time with him and his family on their ranch. One of my all time heroes and one the all time greats has passed away. American Dream #DustyRhodes I will never forget you. #Legend
— Steve Austin (@steveaustinBSR) June 11, 2015

For Dream. I’m writing this from Churchill’s in Miami, FL. I was on my way here today when I got the news. I may be half kicked in the ass, but hey, whiskey is good for a broken heart. (I think he’d like that. Sounds like an old country lyric.) It still seems surreal to me that he’s gone. Dusty was a legend. There aren’t many of those left these days. A real, true, American hero. He taught me more than I could ever accurately describe. Most people would never know, that when my career was cut short, he was the first to go to bat for me. He made me part of his “staff.” Most of the time, we’d just listen to old country songs and eat BBQ in his office during “staff meetings.” But, eventually, he trusted me enough to run a promo class each week at the PC. I spent countless hours with the Dream, “rebooking the territory,” and trying to come up with ideas for the new NXT Talent. He called them his “kids.” And he meant it. Beyond his beautiful, talented “blood” family, Dusty looked at every talent as one of his own. He cared. Sometimes too much. And he was never afraid to go to war for them. I could sit for hours reminiscing. I’m sure I will. So many stories. So much knowledge. But if I knew Dusty at all, I’d know that he wouldn’t want anybody mourning. He’d want everyone that knew, watched, or just enjoyed the American Dream, not to weep that he’s gone. But rather smile because you knew Dusty Rhodes. I miss you Dream. I love you.
– Corey Graves

Today I lost a mentor.
One man that single handedly touched so many lives. He always believed in me. When people asked me what it is like to train with The American Dream Dusty Rhodes I say, “He always believe in me, from day one. He was one of the only ones to give me a chance very early on.” At times he believed in me more then I believed in myself. He always said he saw big things for me. Within the first couple weeks at FCW he made me General Manager. He gave me a role on tv while I learned how to wrestle because he believed in me. He gave me that chance bc he trusted I would deliver. For months at FCW I wasn’t booked for weekend shows but I was ALWAYS booked on Thursday night Tampa house shows bc he was making the card! If it wasn’t for Dusty my name would actually be ‘Kylie Summers’. Not a bad name really but he told the whole class “Ain’t no star named mother f’ing Kylie Summers”. 😂🙈 He then placed a call to have it changed. NO ONE went to bat for us more than Dream. No one. Some of the best advice that I have ever received has come from him. There have been times where I am live on RAW & have heard his advice verbatim in my head & used it. Invaluable. I will always be grateful to him for that. Grateful to him for showing me the way during the very impressionable & critical first year of my career. Grateful for just being able to know him, work with him, & meet him. What a caring, passionate, fiery soul. Your attitude is infectious! Not to mention – laugh out loud hilarious! No filter & we wouldn’t have it any other way. You felt like one of his kids. It was family. And nothing made him happier then seeing you succeed. Nothing. You’ve helped SO many men & women LIVE out their dreams. Thank you. Thank you Dusty. You are irreplaceable.
