The Event Center: WWF Saturday Night Main Event: January 27th, 1990

Introduction:
Welcome back to the Event Center exclusively here on CrazyMax. Last time you saw us we ran through Wrestlemania IX. This time we are going back to Saturday Night Main Event and we are going back to 1990. We are going to the Saturday Night Main Event that furthered the storyline between Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania 6. We also have the Macho King vs. Jim Duggan. Then we have Jake Roberts vs. Greg Valentine. Then we have Dusty Rhodes vs. Rick Rude. Looks like a lot of great action here so lets get to it. I am looking forward to this show because it has been a while since I’ve seen it therefore I hope you are just as excited as I am. Lets get to the ring.

Show Opening:

The show opens up with Vince McMahon hyping up the fact that this is the first time ever that Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior have tagged up together for a match. They then go to a montage of highlights featuring the matches that are going to be on the card. I always loved the opening to Saturday Night Main Event and the music kicks ass as well.

We then head to Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura at the broadcast booth. Vince calls Jesse the Slash of the WWF. Jesse then asks’s Vince why they call Tennessee the Volunteer state? Vince says he doesn’t know why? Jesse responds “Because everybody volunteers to leave here..” Classic. Vince asks Jesse what he thinks of Hogan and Warrior tagging up for the first time. Jesse says its two humongous egos clashing and he knows for a fact that they won’t get along. Jesse says the reason being is because the two of them went at it at the Royal Rumble. Jesse says that we will see it again tonight because they will never be able to make it as a tag team.

Vince then brings up Jake Roberts vs. Greg Valentine. Jesse says this one is interesting because we don’t know if Valentine is afraid of snakes. We have Dino Bravo vs. Ronnie Garvin. Jesse says Garvin may have bit off more than he can chew with the Canadian strong man. Vince then tells us we have Dusty Rhodes vs. Rick Rude. Jesse then lets us know that Macho King will be defending the crown against Hacksaw Jim Duggan, who he thinks is standing by.

Backstage Interview: Hacksaw Jim Duggan

We head to the back where Duggan is standing by with Gene Okerlund. Okerlund says he is proud to have Duggan by his side for the first Saturday Night Main Event of the 90s. Duggan says he is ready for the 90s and he is ready for the low down king and queen. They then show highlights of how Savage won the king’s crown from Jim Duggan. Okerlund says it was stolen. Okerlund asks Duggan if he wants revenge or the crown back. Duggan says it’s both yet neither if you know what he means. Okerlund says yes or no. Duggan says he doesn’t want revenge for what they did to him but he wants revenge for he peasants that they called them. Duggan says that this peasant knows what to do right here in the USA and if Sherri gets in his way he will crack her make up like the Berlin wall.

Backstage Interview: Macho King Randy Savage & Sensational Queen Sherri

Okerlund says we just got a response from the people and Macho says they aren’t people they are peasants. Okerlund says that in his opinion the fans love Duggan. Okerlund then asks Savage if King Louie means anything to him and Savage says no. Okerlund then asks him what about guillotine and Savage says oh yeah thats what peasants do to get their hair cut. Savage says that Okerlund could be his court jester. Savage says he rules the peasants and the peasants don’t rule him. Savage says Duggan is a peasant and that he will never rule the madness, never wield the scepter, never wear the crown, and he will never have a queen like Sensational Queen Sherri. Okerlund, the pervert, says oh yeah. Sherri then states she is Savage’s queen and that she is his to rule. Sherri then says everything she has is all for Macho King. Macho then says that the throne is waiting for Macho King oh yeah!!!

Match 1: Macho King Randy Savage vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Savage comes out on his throne getting carried out by some jobbers. They set the throne up on the apron and the guard rail. Savage then takes forever to get his gear off and get into the match and this infuriates Jim Duggan. Duggan gets fed up and goes outside and tips the throne over on it’s side to get the match started before the bell even rings. Duggan then picks up Savage and nails him right a big right hand and then he throws him into the ring. Duggan grabs Savage by the hair and rams him face first into the buckle.

Duggan then whips Savage into the corner and he charges in with a shoulder block but Savage moves out of the way and Duggan goes crashing into the turnbuckle. It doesn’t phase Duggan at all, so he heads over to Savage and whips him into the ropes. Duggan dunks down to early and Savage nails him with a boot to the face. Duggan shakes this off but he is still a little dazed so Savage drops him with a clothesline. Duggan rolls under the rope so Savage takes his boot and chokes him. Savage then goes up and over to the outside and drops and elbow to the throat of Duggan. Savage goes for a whip on Duggan but Duggan reverses it and Duggan drops him with a clothesline.

Duggan then whips Savage into the corner and Savage bounces out and Duggan drops him with another clothesline. Duggan then picks up Savage and hits him with an atomic drop. Sherri gets on the apron and Duggan charges after her but misses. Savage then charges and nails Duggan in the back with a double ax handle that sends Duggan outside. Savage then climbs to the top rope and drops a double ax handle to Duggan’s face on the outside. Duggan gets up and Savage kicks him in the face then throws him back into the ring. Savage goes to the top rope again and drops Duggan with another ax handle. Savage then grabs Duggan by the hair and jumps over the top rope and clotheslines Duggan over the top rope. Savage quickly gets back in the ring and gets a quick 2 count.

Duggan is draped across the middle rope so Savage charges at him and tries to land on the back of Duggan but Duggan moves out of the way and Savage gets in a rocking chair type position until he falls on his back. Sherri has a shocked look on her face. Duggan goes for an elbow but Savage moves out of the way before Duggan can hit him. Duggan then decks Savage with a big right hand. Savage then rakes the face of Duggan to stop his momentum. Duggan gets over by the ropes and Savage comes charging at him and Duggan dumps him with a big time back body drop. I always loved the way Savage took this spot because he sold it like a million bucks.

While Savage is out on floor Sherri gets on the apron to distract the ref and Duggan. The ref is standing between Duggan and Sherri so Duggan moves the referee out of the way and charges at Sherri but she moves and Duggan ends up clothesline Savage. Duggan ends up throwing Savage back in the ring. Duggan then picks Savage up and body slams him. Duggan hits the ropes and drops a big knee to the chest of Savage. He goes for the cover but Sherri distracts the referee so Duggan can only get a 2 count. Savage gets to his knees and Duggan drops him with a right hand. Duggan goes for the cover and Sherri ends up taking the boot of Savage and draping it across the rope to break up the pin.

Duggan is distracted by Sherri again and Savage tries to attack him from behind but Duggan turns around and ends up hitting Savage with a clothesline. Savage gets up and Duggan drops him with another clothesline. He does this one more time then hits Savage with another big right hand that sends Savage rolling out to the floor again. Duggan comes out and throws Savage back into the ring. Sherri then rakes the back of Duggan. Duggan gets tired of it and chases Sherri around the ring and eventually into the ring. Duggan then gets his hands out like he is trying to grab her ass and it looks so damn funny. I die laughing every time I see it and that is why it is now in gif form.

Duggan finally gets ahold of Sherri and he picks her up off the mat. He grabs her by the head and pushes her in the corner. The ref breaks it up and Sherri rolls out of the ring. Savage then hits Duggan with a knee to the back. Savage then goes up to the top rope and goes for a double ax handle and Duggan connects with a punch to the midsection at the same time. Sherri then loads up her purse and hands it to Savage. Sherri then distracts the referee as Duggan gets back to his feet. Savage is laying there with the purse in hand as Duggan comes over to him. Duggan turns Savage around and Savage decks him with the loaded purse. Savage goes for the cover and gets a 2 count.

Savage picks Duggan up and Duggan gets him in a small package for a 2 count. Savage tries to ram Duggan into the turnbuckle but Duggan blocks it and punches Savage. Duggan then picks up Savage and atomic drops him into the corner, Savage then comes right out of the corner and Duggan hits him with a clothesline. Savage gets up and he gets dropped with a clothesline again. Duggan gets down in the 3 point stance and he nails Savage with the clothesline but Savage falls outside the ring. Duggan tries to suplex Savage into the ring but Sherri trips the legs of Duggan and Savage lands on top of him. Savage goes for the pin while Sherri holds the legs of Duggan and Savage his legs on the rope and he gets the 1-2-3. Your winner and still King of the World Wrestling Federation….Macho King Randy Savage!

Recap:
What a great opener this one was. Savage worked so fast so it made the match go by quicker than it really did. It also made Duggan look really good and he held his own. The interference from Sherri seemed a bit excessive but they were playing off the persona that Duggan had of being a stupid guy who will fall for anything. It worked out perfectly. Savage got in some great spots even though we didn’t get to see his elbow. Duggan actually took a pin and didn’t get DQ’ed which is very rare for him during these days. All in all this was a really good fun match that was a great way to start off this show.

Backstage Interview: Mr. Perfect & The Genius

Jesse says that many people feel that theres an unbeatable tag team that has been formed. Jesse says that they may think they are unbeatable but he thinks differently because he saw them collide at the Royal Rumble. Jesse says that Hogan and Warrior will never work together as a cohesive unit. Jesse says now here you have the perfect tag team because you have the brains and braun. Perfect says the WWF has never seen an athlete like Mr. Perfect. Perfect says that this is a perfect opportunity for them to show the whole world what those two ego maniacs are made of. Perfect then informs us that the Genius already has a victory over Hulk Hogan on a previous Saturday Night Main Event.

Genius then recites his poem and says: The Genius was victorious against the mighty Hulkster and the World Wrestling Federation fell. For a billion Hulkamaniacs who live and die for Hogan saw that the Genius was triumphant at the bell. They saw their Hulking hero as he wallowed in self pity like the victim of a somewhat heinous crime. And now he has a partner even stupider than he is so I’m sure he will be the loser one more time. Mr. Perfect Mr. Perfect you’re the man who is never wrong can you prophesize what we’re about to do. By the power of the Genius and the worlds smartest man, just rely on my incredible IQ.

They showed the highlights of Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior going at it from the Royal Rumble

Backstage Interview: Hulk Hogan & The Ultimate Warrior

Okerlund says at one point Hulk Hogan it was he and the Ultimate Warrior in a bit of a standoff. Hogan says that he warned everyone last Sunday when he said he was going to run wild over the entire WWF. Hogan said that he said there would be turbulence. Hogan said that when the two strongest forces were on the opposite side of the fence, they nearly tore the building down. Hogan says now that the two strongest forces are on the same team and Mr. Perfect and the Genius are going to get a lesson on what running wild is all about. Hogan says that once he releases the Ultimate Warrior on them he is going to press them into the darkness.

Warrior says that any time you travel 36,000 miles above normal sea level then you will have turbulence. Warrior then says any time you mix physically and mentally reactive chemicals theres going to be boiling and boiling. But once it settles that common bond is stronger than anything intelligence and perfection can ever bring.

Hogan says that when we unite mind, body, and soul as one. The Warriors with the Hulkamaniacs, the dream team as the WWF and all the Maniacs call it, will be become the ultimate nightmare for perfection and the Genius.

Match 2: Hulk Hogan/Ultimate Warrior vs. Mr. Perfect/Genius

The match starts off with Hogan and Perfect in a collar and elbow tie up. Hogan flexes his muscles and throws Mr. Perfect into the corner and Perfect goes flying. I swear sometimes it appeared that he had springs in his boots. Perfect then steps out of the ring and goes to the apron to stop Hogan. We get in another tie up where Hogan hip tosses Perfect then body slams him. Genius comes in and he gets a body slam, then Perfect with another body slam, then the Genius, then Perfect again. Hogan heads over and tags in the Warrior.

Warrior comes in and immediately goes to the outside where he rams the heads of Perfect and Genius together. He then rams them head first into the apron. Warrior throws Genius into the ring and Warrior hits him with a shoulder block. Warrior then goes over and sling shots Perfect back into the ring. He then irish whips Perfect into the Genius and then follows that up with a clothesline to Mr. Perfect who goes flying over the top rope. It’s all offense for the champs at this point. Warrior then tags Hogan back into the match.

We get another tie up with Perfect and this time Perfect drives Hogan into the corner. Perfect then lays in big time rights and lefts and then a brutal chop. Perfect tries to whip Hogan into the corner but Hogan reverses it and he follows Perfect in and nails him with an elbow and this sends Perfect flying over the top rope again. Hogan then goes to the outside after him and ends up whipping Perfect into the steel post. Perfect hits the post and goes flipping and sells this spot like a million bucks. Man when Perfect was on there was no one better at selling. What a tremendous talent Perfect was.

Perfect gets back in the ring and Hogan drives Perfects head into the top turnbuckle. Hogan then whips Perfect into the ropes and clotheslines him. Again Hogan picks up Perfect and rams him head first into the top turnbuckle and this time Perfect hits his head and then twirls, in what appears to be slow motion, as he comes crashing to the mat. What an awesome visual. Meanwhile, on the apron the Genius has his scroll and is writing something on it while Mr. Perfect is getting destroyed by Hogan.

Hogan and Perfect get to their and Hogan lays in some right hands. Hogan then body slams Perfect and drops two elbows on him. Hogan then gets on top of Perfect and nails him with 7 right hands. Hogan then whips Perfect into the ropes and nails Perfect with the big boot. Genius then hands Perfect the scroll as Hogan comes out to  get goes for his moonsault but Hogan gets the knees up to block it. Perfect then comes off the top rope and is going for a move but Hogan gets the boot up and Perfect goes flying in the air and crashing to the mat.

Hogan goes for a tag but the Genius grabs his boot but Hogan kicks him off and ends up getting the tag. Warrior comes in shaking the ropes as he clubs the Genius in the back and then he throws him into the turnbuckle twice. Warrior then nails Perfect with a big knee lift that sends Perfect flying to the outside. Warrior then hit the Genius with a big time clothesline. Warrior then picks up the Genius and gets him the Gorilla Press Slam. Warrior hits the ropes as Hogan tags him in. Warrior jumps over the Genius and sends Perfect flying out of the ring. Hogan then comes in and drops the leg on the Genius and gets the 3 count. Your winners by way of pinfall…..Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior!

After the match Mr. Perfect and the Genius come in and attack Hogan and Warrior. Perfect drives a knee into the back of Hogan that sends him out of the ring. Warrior becomes a maniac and is clotheslining everything in site. Hogan gets in the ring to try and help the Warrior but the Warrior ends up decking him with a clothesline on accident. Hogan gets laid out as the Warrior tries to get him up to his feet. Warrior is slapping him around and telling him to get up. Hogan gets up to his feet he shoves Warrior. Warrior returns the favor and shoves Hogan back. They then go face to face and have a great showdown. Warrior then shoves Hogan again as we head to commercial break. What an awesome job that was to get this match some more heat on it.

Recap:
There was nothing overly special about this match as far as the in ring work goes. But seeing Hogan and Warrior tag up for the one and only time, I believe, is pretty damn awesome to see. It’s also great seeing Mr. Perfect selling everything like a million bucks for these guys. It really adds to the stature and how larger than life both of these guys were. In ring worth alone theres really nothing to see here. But the drama, excitement, and the post match fireworks it really makes this match stick out and is one of the ones you definitely need to check out. It’s well worth your time.

They show highlights of Jake stealing the Million Dollar Belt from Ted DiBiase on Superstars.

Backstage Interview: Jake The Snake Roberts

Gene asks Jake if the belt is in the bag with Damien. Jake says wouldn’t you really want to know. Gene says yeah he would like to know as would Jimmy Hart and Greg Valentine. Jake says theres really only one way to find out and thats to stick your hand in the bag and find out. Okerlund says he will pass on that. Jake says that he figured he would pass on that so there is one more way he can find out and thats to watch this match. Such a short and simple promo that was really effective. Nobody could really touch Jake, promo wise, when he was on.

Backstage Interview: Greg The Hammer Valentine & Jimmy Hart

Jesse tells them that Jake is now in possession of the Million Dollar Belt. Jesse says the question now is where is the belt and where is Damien and what is in the bag? Jimmy says thats a good question but they aren’t worried about the bag just yet. Jimmy says they have to beat the man first. To beat Jake, the thief, you have to forget about the bag. Valentine says you have to remember the Hammer. Jesse says that but what if you lose, you know what Jake does with Damien when you lose. Jimmy says you might as well forget about us losing because there are two of them. Jesse says he has one more question before he forgets, Jesse wants to know what they will do with the Million Dollar Belt if they happen to get it back. Jimmy says thats not one more questions thats a million questions and that they will answer that question in the ring.

Match 3: Jake The Snake Roberts vs. Greg The Hammer Valentine

Jake gets in the ring and ends up opening up the snake and inside the bag is Damien as well as the Million Dollar Belt. Before the match starts they show a replay of Warrior clotheslining Hogan from earlier tonight. Jake and Valentine start the match with a collar and elbow tie up and Valentine ends up arm dragging Jake. They tie up again and Valentine again arm drags Jake. They tie up for a third time and Valentine gets Jake in an arm bar. Jake then arm drags Valentine himself towards Damien in the corner. Valentine gets up and sees the bag and gets scared off. Jake goes for the DDT but Valentine slides out of it and goes to the outside to regroup.

Valentine gets back in the ring and they tie up for a fourth time. Valentine drives Jake into the ropes and they get a clean break. Jimmy then grabs the foot of Jake and this distracts Jake so Valentine lays in some right hands. Jake gets pushed into the corner and Valentine nails him with two vicious chops and follows that up with some right hands. Valentine then whips Jake into the opposite corner. Valentine grabs him again and again whips him into the corner as Jake collapses to the mat. Valentine hits the ropes and winds up the elbow and drops it on the back of the neck of Jake. Valentine goes for the cover and gets a 2 count.

Valentine picks up Jake and decks him with a forearm to the face. Jake swings wildly and misses Valentine. Valentine then throws some left jabs at Jake. Valentine then drops an elbow to the head of Jake and gets a 2 count out of it. Valentine drops a knee to the lower back of Jake. Valentine gets another 2 count on Jake. Jake gets up to his knees and he starts punching Valentine in the gut. They exchange some lefts and rights before Jake gets the advantage and drives Valentine into the corner. Jake tries to whip Valentine into the corner but Valentine reverses it and sends Jake into the corner. Valentine comes charging in but Jake moves out of the way and Valentine goes crashing into the corner. Jake then bounces off the ropes and nails Valentine with a right hand that sends Valentine down to the mat.

Jake then picks up Valentine and he dumps Valentine with the short arm clothesline. Jake signals for the DDT. He picks up Valentine and goes for the DDT but Valentine back drops him off. Valentine hits the ropes and goes for an elbow drop but misses. Jake gets up and goes for a big time knee lift but Valentine moves out of the way and Jake goes flying into the corner and lands on his neck area. Valentine goes for the figure four on Jake but Jake kicks him off and he goes crashing into Jimmy Hart. Valentine turns around and Jake dumps him with the DDT. Jake goes for the cover but Ted DiBiase comes out of no way and attacks Jake. Your winner by disqualification….Jake the Snake Roberts!

After the match DiBiase lays in the boots and drops some knees to the back of Jake. Meanwhile, Virgil is messing with the bag trying to get the Million Dollar Belt back. Jake finally gets back to his feet and starts laying in the right hands to DiBiase. Jake then drops DiBiase with a high knee then decks Virgil with a right hand. Jake then lets Damien out of the bag and he goes after Virgil with it. Virgil and DiBiase hightail it out of there while Jake celebrates in the ring with the belt and Damien.

Recap:
There really wasn’t much to this match at all. A lot of punches and elbows and kicks and thats pretty much it. It was pretty awesome to see the DDT because it seems like Jake didn’t deliver it that much in bigger matches. The interference from DiBiase just furthered their feud and made you ready for their match at Wrestlemania 6. All in all not a great match by any means but not a terrible one either. You can either skip the match or watch it but you really can’t go wrong with either option.

Backstage Interview: Ravishing Rick Rude & Bobby Heenan

Jesse informs Bobby and Rude that they will be fighting Dusty Rhodes tonight with Sapphire in his corner. Heenan says you might as well have said that a piano was going to be in the corner of Dusty. Heenan says that Sapphire is living proof that Moms Mabley had kids. Heenan asks us if we have seen the size of that husky. Jesse wants to know why you would mess with these two. Jesse says that he is a journalist and that he knows the who what where but he doesn’t know the why. Heenan lets Rude explain the why to Jesse.

Rude says that since he is a Jesse the Body award winner that he is the masculine ideal. He also says that he is the man that women want. Rude says tonight he is going to snap his fingers and Sapphire will be coming to him. Rude says that no woman can resist him and that Sapphire is no different. Jesse says that he wouldn’t put his hands on that woman on a bet. Rude then says “who says anything about hands Jesse?” Heenan says that Jesse now knows the why and now he is going to know the rest of the story.

Backstage Interview: American Dream Dusty Rhodes & Sapphire

Okerlund welcomes Rhodes and Sapphire to the Saturday Night Main Event. Okerlund says that Rude claims that Sapphire is his for the asking and that he can have her at the snap of a finger. Sapphire says that Rude is nothing compared to Dusty Rhodes. Okerlund asks Dusty if this is the decade of the common man and of Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes says he likes the sound of that but this isn’t just the decade of the common man but of the common woman as well. Rhodes says that is the reason he is here tonight because Rude has been treating women bad all over. Rhodes says that has to stop and he is here to stop it. Okerlund says what about Bobby Heenan. Rhodes responds with what about Sapphire? Okerlund says yeah you have a point. Rhodes then says he has a place to stick it as well as he heads out to the ring.

Match 4: Ravishing Rick Rude vs. American Dream Dusty Rhodes

Before the match starts Sapphire kisses Dusty Rhodes but Rude attacks Rhodes from behind. Rude nails Rude 3-4 times with some forearms and then he pulls him out of the corner and hits him with another elbow. Rude then tries to whip Rhodes into the corner but Rhodes reverses it and Rude crashes into the corner. Rude falls down and Rhodes drops and an elbow to the lower back of Rude. Rhodes then throws Rude out of the ring. Rhodes follows him out and rams the lower back into the apron twice. Rhodes throws Rude back into the ring.

Rude crawls over to the corner as Rhodes slowly comes in. Rude ends up hitting Rhodes with a knee to the midsection. Rude then goes for a bodyslam but can’t do it because of his back. Rhodes then nails Rude 4 times with an elbow and on the 4th try Rude finally falls to the mat. Rude is backing into the corner trying to keep Rhodes off of him. Rude gets back to his feet and Rhodes lays in some shoulder blocks to Rude. Rhodes then snap mares Rude over and goes for an elbow drop but Rude sits up and Rhodes misses the elbow.

Rude gets back to his feet and he snap mares Rhodes over. Rude then gets a reverse chin lock on Rhodes in the middle of the ring. Heenan goes after Sapphire and he tells her to keep his mouth shut. Meanwhile, in the ring Rhodes gets out of the chin lock and ends up hitting Rude with a back body drop. Rhodes then dumps Rude with some forearms to the back. Rhodes goes after Heenan on the outside and this allows Rude to come out and attack Rhodes from behind. The ref goes out of the ring and they throw Heenan out and send him to the back. They also throw Sapphire out of the ringside area.

Rhodes is looking for Sapphire but Rude hits him in the back with a knee. Rhodes falls out of the ring and Rude goes out after him. Rude then takes rude and throws him into the ring post. Rude gets back in the ring and tries to do his hip move but can’t because his back is in pain. Rhodes gets on the apron and Rude starts to work on the arm of Dusty. Rude then gets an arm bar on Dusty. Sapphire comes back to the ring as a fan and has a seat ringside. Rhodes tries to get out of the arm but Rude gets control and keeps him in the hold.

Rhodes gets back to his feet and he head butts Rude but Rude ends up raking the eyes to keep control of the match. Rude then notices that Sapphire is sitting ringside and it distracts Rude. Rhodes gets to Rude from behind and he turns him around and he hits him with a few right hands. Rude regains control and gets Rhodes in the arm bar again. Rhodes gets up and he backs Rude into the ropes and they end up shoulder blocking each other as they both crash to the mat. Rude crawls to the outside and climbs up to the top rope. He goes for an ax handle but Rhodes catches him with a shot to the midsection.

Rhodes then does a single leg take down to Rude. Rhodes then drops a knee to the hamstring of Rude and Rhodes gets him in a toe hold. Rude ends up raking the eyes to break the hold. Rude then clubs Rhodes in the back of the head and snap mares him over. Rude then kicks the arm of Rhodes 2-3 times. Rhodes gets up to his knees as Rude continues to hammer Rhodes with right hands. Rhodes starts to dance and no selling the punches. Rhodes gets up to his feet and ends up hitting Rude with an elbow. Rhodes whips Rude into the ropes and bends over early so Rude kicks him in the face. This sends Rhodes crashing to the mat as Rude lays in some more boots to the midsection.

Rude then gets distracted by Sapphire again as she does the hip wiggle that Rude does. Rude then grabs the arm of Sapphire as Rhodes comes out after him. Rhodes chops away at Rude and both men just brawl all the way to the back. Rhodes throws Rude into the guard rail and that stops him cold. Rhodes gets back in the ring as his music hits. Sapphire gets in the ring with Rhodes as they both dance. This match ends in a double count out.

Recap:
This was your typical Rhodes match here. Bunch of elbows and punches and drama. Rude sold his back injury like a champ, which he seemed to do in all of his matches. This match was nothing special but it wasn’t terrible either. If you are trying to power through a review the last thing you want is a Dusty Rhodes match to pop up because they are all usually the same. No knock on Dusty but it seemed that he did the bare minimum during his run in the WWF. Rude did what he could do and Dusty wasn’t bad so this was a decent little match here but again nothing special.

Backstage Interview: Dino Bravo, Canadian Earthquake, & Jimmy Hart

Okerlund introduces the newest threesome in the World Wrestling Federation. Hart asks Okerlund what you get when you combine the world’s strongest man and a Canadian Earthquake? Okerlund says no what and Jimmy say a national disaster. Okerlund says thats all well and good but tonight Dino Bravo he has Ronnie Garvin. Bravo says don’t worry about that Gene because tonight Ronnie Garvin is going to be the one that gets stomped. Jimmy Hart says it is going to happen on a grand scale and the Earthquake follows that up with a Richter scale.

Match 5: Dino Bravo vs. Rugged Ronnie Garvin

The match starts with Ronnie Garvin and Bravo tying up. Bravo pushes Garvin back into the ropes and lays in some knees and forearms to Garvin. Bravo then nails Garvin with two weak ass chops. Bravo then whips Garvin into the ropes and goes for a clothesline but Garvin dunks out of the way and nails Bravo with a brutal sounding chop. Garvin then lays in two big right hands that stun Bravo. Garvin then chops Bravo again and then gets him in a head lock.

Bravo pushes Garvin into the ropes then drops down as Garvin goes over. Bravo gets back to his feet and grabs Garvin, who for no reason at all just stops running, and throws him to the outside where the Earthquake is waiting. Earthquake picks up Garvin and rams him into the apron before throwing him back into the ring. Bravo then picks up Garvin and hits him with a body slam then a big elbow. Bravo goes for the pin and gets a 2 count.

Bravo quickly gets back to his feet and hits Garvin with two kicks to the head. Bravo picks up Garvin and hits him with a gut wrench suplex and gets another 2 count. Bravo picks up Garvin and nails him with a big right hand twice. Garvin falls back to the mat as Bravo picks him up again. Bravo goes for another body slam but Garvin does a go behind and runs Bravo into the ropes but Bravo holds on. Bravo goes for 3 elbows but Garvin rolls out of the way on all of them.

Garvin then lays in another brutal chop and follows that up with 2-3 more right hands. Bravo gets 2 more chops and then irish whipped in the ropes and Garvin dumps him with a back body drop. Jimmy Hart gets on the ropes and Garvin throws him into the ring. Garvin picks up Jimmy Hart and throws him onto Earthquake. Garvin goes for the Garvin Stomp and after 2-3 stomps to Bravo he ends up stepping on the hand of Earthquake. Garvin is distracted by Earthquake so Bravo smashes the head of Garvin into the turnbuckle.

Bravo then grabs Garvin and throws him out of the ring through the middle rope but Garvin lands on his feet. Bravo starts celebrating but Garvin ends up getting back in the ring rather quickly and goes to the top rope. Earthquake comes over to tell Bravo that he needs to turn around. Bravo then walks over towards Garvin who comes off the top rope with a cross body. However, Bravo rolls through and ends up hooking the tights to get the 1-2-3. Your winner by way of pinfall….Dino Bravo!

After the match Garvin decks Bravo with a big right hand. However, Earthquake gets in the ring and starts to lay in some forearms to the back. Bravo then picks up Garvin and drops him with an atomic drop. Earthquake then nails Garvin with the Earthquake splash not once but twice. Doctors and other refs come out and take Ronnie Garvin out on a stretcher to sell the injuries.

Recap:
Considering the guys involved with the match, this wasn’t that bad at all. Both guys moved pretty well and kept the action going so there really wasn’t any lull in the match. Garvin’s chops sounded so brutal and they had to hurt. No way you can fake that shit. I also liked the after the match stuff with Earthquake. He wasted no time dropping his Earthquake splash and Garvin sold them like a champ. All in all this was a pretty decent match to end the show and I was pleasantly surprised by it. I would recommend checking it out if you care about either one of these guys.

Backstage Interview: Macho King Randy Savage

Jesse announces that on February 23rd, the Main Event, it will be Macho King vs. Hulk Hogan with Mike Tyson as the special guest referee. Macho says that he is delighted that Tyson is the referee. Savage finally says that somebody with a reputation to the possible abuse that might happen between Hogan and Savage. Savage says there will not be an excuse when he beats Hulk Hogan. Savage also says if he finds out if Tyson is not calling the match right down the middle, or maybe somebody in his family is a Hulkamaniac, then it will be bad for him.

Savage says on the 23rd he is going to take the WWF title because he has had it before he wants it again. Savage then says it would be best if Mike Tyson comes down to the ring and bows to the Macho King and if he doesn’t then he will go on and beat Hulk Hogan and then point the finger at Tyson and make him bow and kiss the feet of Savage. Savage says that in the kingdom of the madness the Macho King is the best around. Savage then says that there is no one better than him in any sport….dig it.

Backstage Interview: Hulk Hogan

Okerlund asks Hogan for his thoughts on the match between he and Savage with Tyson as the ref. Hogan says thank God that this black cloud that has been following Hogan around the World Wrestling Federation will be fading away. Hogan says he didn’t know how many more times he will have to prove himself. Hogan says he was the lone survivor at the Survivor Series, he was the final man in the No Holds Barred cage match, and he rumbled all over the WWF Superstars at the Royal Rumble. Hogan says the dark cloud will still follow over him. Hogan said no matter where he went his Hulkamaniacs would ask him about the Macho King. They want to know why he didn’t destroy the kingdom of the madness forever.

Hogan says he got asked this question time and time and time again. Hogan said finally that the Hulksters and all of the little Hulksters prayers have been answered. Tyson is the man who can hold the Madness back and can keep Scary Sherri out of the ring. Hogan says that Tyson is the man that can keep it between Hogan and Savage in the middle of the ring. Hogan says he is going to prove for the last time that Hulkamania is stronger than it has ever been.

Okerlund then says this could be the last time that he and Macho King fight for the gold. Hogan says this will be the last time as far as Macho King is concerned. Hogan also said that he will prove to Mike Tyson that Hulkamania is the strongest force in the universe and that Hulkamania will never die.

Show Closing:

The show comes back from commercial with Jesse shadow boxing while Vince tells us that he is getting warmed up for Mike Tyson. Jesse says that Tyson better call it right down the middle, as a world wrestling federation referee, this is a wrestling match not a boxing match so he better call it right down the middle. Vince asks Jesse what happens if he doesn’t call it down the middle. Jesse says well there would be news for Mike Tyson that there are people on this planet that can take him and that Vince maybe standing next to one right now.

Vince asks Jesse about bringing Tyson into his refereeing camp. Jesse says thats the best thing that could happen for Tyson. Jesse then says go to school with the Body, Iron Mike. We go to commercial break and come back one last time. Jesse reminds us one more time about the match between Hogan and Savage with Iron Mike on February 23rd. They then show what happened between the Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan from earlier in the show as the music plays as the show ends.

Show Recap:
This was a really good show top to bottom. There were a few surprises, such as how good the Bravo/Garvin match was. The opening match was very well done and Savage looked awesome like always. Duggan didn’t suck to bad and we got to see Sherri’s ass so all in all its a pretty solid opener.

The tag team match between Hogan/Warrior vs. Perfect/Genius wasn’t a classic by any stretch but it was still awesome to see Hogan and Warrior tag together. You could tell they were head and shoulders above the rest of the locker room by this point and seeing them on the same team looked like a nearly impossible task for the challengers. Mr. Perfect sold everything like a million bucks and it really made the match that much better. The post match stuff with Warrior clotheslining Hogan was great as well. Just an overall really enjoyable experience this match was.

The Jake and Valentine match went short and thank goodness for that. The match was good in part because of the length but because we got to continue the feud between Jake and DiBiase. It worked but there was nothing really to write home about.

Then we got Dusty and Rude which was decent but like i stated earlier it felt like Dusty was just mailing it in during his time with the WWF. Fans really loved the character and were behind him but he did the same 2-3 things in all of his matches in the WWF and it felt like he just didn’t give a shit and he was there to collect a check. Can’t fault him for that but he could have at least tried. Rude did his best and sold like only he can. Not a great match here either but it wasn’t terrible.

We finish up the show with Bravo and Garvin and this was just a slug fest. It didn’t go very long but both guys actually looked good during the match and it wasn’t a total shit fest like one would expect from these two. The interference from Earthquake was to be expected but they did it after the match so we got a legit winner. Again not great but not horrible either.

All in all this show was pretty decent and fun to watch. The tag match alone obviously sold the show but there are some other things that were entertaining throughout the night. The show keeps your attention and you could get through this one in one setting. I love the Saturday Night Main Event format because it gave guys a chance to do an interview then they go out and have their match. They get to sell you on the match before it happens and that didn’t really happen very often back then so this was a refreshing change of pace. I would recommend checking out this show if only for the first two matches but if you stick around for the rest of the card you won’t be disappointed.

I hope you enjoyed this episode of the Event Center right here on CrazyMax. I have a couple of other shows in mind that may mix up the time frame a little. With it being Wrestlemania week I wanted to do things that tied into Mania. Going forward we are going to mix it up and get a mixed bag of reviews so I hope you stick with us here and I hope you enjoy this review as well as the many more to come.
