Notes from historian Tim Hornbaker: Mr Wrestling unmasked before the match with Vachon revealing “Tim Woods of Michigan State.” Promoter Joe Dusek indicated Mr Wrestling was a “former Big Ten and Pan-American Games titlist.” The Omaha World Herald’s article states “Mr Wrestling Lifts Mask, Then Whips Dog For Title.” Woods would no longer wear his mask for local bouts.

– The Tuesday, January 11, 1966 promotional piece in the Omaha World Herald said that “Mr Wrestling lifted Mad Dog’s title” last Saturday.

– The Friday, January 14, 1966 edition of the Omaha World Herald reported that AWA President Stanley Blackburn reviewed the match between Vachon and Woods and “ruled that bout no contest after evidence was presented that the ex-masked man got the decisive third fall with both feet braced in the ring ropes.” Thus, Vachon was still AWA World Heavyweight Champion.

– More Notes from Historian Tim Hornbaker: The article in the Omaha World Herald stated “Title Returns to Mad Dog,” even though in the article it indicated Vachon was “the champ.” So, Tim Woods did gain a tainted victory, and may have claimed the AWA World Heavyweight Title for a few days, but Blackburn voided out the switch and Vachon remained the official titleholder.  Thanks to Tim for getting to the bottom of this mystery. Please visit Tim’s website at legacyofwrestling.com.

* The Winnipeg Free Press Friday, October 7, 1966 from a column called Time Out with Maurice Smith

A New Promoter

Recently it was mentioned in this column that Alex Turk after 22 years in the game, had given up promoting wrestling in Winnipeg. But local mat enthusiasts will still be able to enjoy their favorite sport for Al Tomko, himself a wrestler of note, has decided to get into the business of promoting and wuill stage his first card October 17.

Tomko will work with the Minneapolis based group headed by Vern Gagne and Wally Karbo. These two men by the way, are probably the largest promoters of wrestling in the United States. They provide matches for such cities as Milwaukee, Chicago, Denver, Omaha and many other smaller centres in the mid-west United States. In addition, they recently took over in Montreal, once one of the greatest hotbeds for wrestling in North America.

Gagne is also in the boxing business. He’s manager of Ron Marsh, a young heavyweight out of Kansas, who has built up quite an impressive record within the last year. The other night in Milwaukee, he won his 13th fight. Most of his victories have come via the TKO route. Gagne thinks his man is just about ready to take on the likes of George Chuvalo and might be interested in promoting the fight here.

Marsh, by the way, is unique among the ranks among professional boxers in that he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas. He often is a substitute teacher in Minneapolis High Schools.
