Kenta Kobashi’s Fortune returns for their second event of the year.  I guess Kobashi is going the Tenryu route of just running his own events when he wants to with his own favorite wrestlers.  Whatever makes him happy I guess.  We get participation from a lot of different promotions here, the full card is as follows:

– Hayato Mashita vs. Minoru Tanaka
– Kairi Hojo vs. Meiko Satomura
– Koji Kanemoto and Kazuki Hashimoto vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Masaaki Mochizuki
– Shane Haste and Quiet Storm vs. Shuji Ishikawa  and Tank Nagai
– Kohei Sato, Katsuhiko Nakajima, and Takuma Sano vs. Takashi Sugiura, Daisuke Sekimoto, and Shiro Koshinaka
– Joe Doering and Shingo Takagi vs. Kento Miyahara and Yuji Hino

I won’t be reviewing Kobashi and Tenryu’s “talk battle,” I am sure it was interesting but I don’t speak Japanese so it would go a bit over my head.

Hayato Mashita vs. Minoru Tanaka
Tanaka and Mashita circle each other to start, and they trade kick attempts with none landing.  Takedown by Tanaka, front facelock by Mashita but Tanaka gets out of it and both men return to their feet.  Tanaka and Mashita lock knuckles, kneelock by Mashita but Tanaka gets to the ropes to force a break.  Kick by Tanaka, snapmare, and he kicks Mashita in the back.  Mashita returns the favor, Tanaka gets back up, snapmare, and he kicks Mashita in the back.  Again Mashita does the same to him, and they go back in forth for a few minutes, then they switch to kicks to the chest.  Kicks by Mashita but Tanaka catches one and hits a dragon screw.  Tanaka goes off the ropes and delivers a dropkick.  Knee drop to the arm by Tanaka, cover, but it gets a two count.  Wristlock by Tanaka and he elbows Mashita in the arm.  Mashita gets into the ropes, Tanaka picks him up and kicks him into the corner.  Kick by Tanaka to the stomach and he hits a headbutt.  Irish whip by Tanaka, reversed, and Mashita hits a jumping knee in the corner.  Vertical suplex by Mashita and he kicks Tanaka repeatedly in the chest.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Mashita punches Tanaka in the corner, Irish whip, but Mashita kicks Tanaka back before hitting a missile dropkick.  Release German suplex by Tanaka and he hits a jumping kick to the head.  Kick by Tanaka, cover, but it gets a two count.  Tanaka applies a cross armbreaker but Mashita gets out of it and applies an ankle hold, but Tanaka gets to the ropes.  Kicks to the leg by Mashita but Tanaka kicks Mashita in the head and hits a Minoru Special.  Mashita can’t reach the ropes and quickly taps out.  Your winner:  Minoru Tanaka

Match Thoughts:  A basic opener but not a horrible one.  It was pretty one-sided, Mashita got a few licks in but Tanaka stayed in control.  This wasn’t surprising since Tanaka is the seasoned vet, it just made the match less compelling as it never really felt like Mashita had a chance to pull off the upset.  Also I hate hate hate the ‘trading sitting down so you can kick me’ spot, one of my least favorite spots in all of wrestling.  So I have to score it down for that but it wasn’t the worst opener I have seen.  Score:  3.5

Kairi Hojo vs. Meiko Satomura
They lock knuckles to start, wristlock by Satomura, Hojo rolls out of it but Satomura keeps the hold applied.  Satomura applies a stretch hold on the mat, side headlock by Satomura but Hojo reverses the hold.  Satomura slams Hojo to the mat, cover, but it gets a two count.  Quick roll-up by Hojo, but it gets a two, and back up they trade elbows.  Hojo chops Satomura into the corner, Irish whip by Hojo and she hits a running shoulder tackle.  Hojo goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits a diving elbow smash.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Hojo picks up Satomura and puts her onto her shoulders but Satomura slides off and elbows Hojo.  They trade elbows, kick to the stomach by Satomura and she elbows Hojo into the corner.  Irish whip by Satomura and she hits a jumping elbow.  Satomura throws Hojo to the mat before picking her back up, uppercuts by Satomura and an Irish whip, and she hits another uppercut.  Knees by Satomura, she goes off the ropes but Hojo hits a spear.  Hojo goes to pick up Satomura but Satomura pushes her to the mat.  Satomura goes for a kick but Hojo catches her leg and applies a kneelock.  Single leg crab hold by Hojo but Satomura gets to the ropes to force a break.  Hojo goes up to the top turnbuckle and hits an elbow drop to Satomura’s back, cover, but it gets a two count.  Hojo picks up Satomura, she goes off the ropes and hits a running elbow strike.  Hojo ties up Satomura in the ropes and hits a dropkick.  Hojo applies a cross legged submission, but Satomura gets out of it and kicks Hojo in the back.  More kicks by Satomura, she picks up Hojo and hits an uppercut.  Satomura goes off the ropes and hits a cartwheel double knee strike.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Satomura goes up to the top turnbuckle but Hojo dives out of the way of the diving body press.  Hojo covers Satomura but she only gets a two count.  Hojo goes off the ropes and hits a sliding elbow smash, cover, but it gets a two.  Hojo goes off the ropes but Satomura catches her with a high kick to the head.  Spinning kick by Satomura, cover, but Hojo kicks out at two.  Elbows by Hojo and Satomura, Hojo goes off the ropes and she hits a spear, but Satomura pushes her off and applies a sleeper.  Cover, but it gets a two count.  Satomura puts Hojo on her shoulders but Hojo slides off, but Satomura nails her with a Pele Kick.  Satomura picks up Hojo and drops her with a death valley bomb, cover, and she picks up the three count.  Your winner:  Meiko Satomura

Match Thoughts:  Some really shady transitions but good overall.  Hojo is adorable and Satomura is a seasoned vet that generally puts on entertaining matches.  Some of the move combinations were just odd, like Hojo successfully hit the spear but Satomura no-sold it to go on to her next move, at that point why not just have Satomura reverse the spear?  Silly things like that happened throughout the match but it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment too much.  A solid joshi match.  Score:  6.0

Koji Kanemoto and Kazuki Hashimoto vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Masaaki Mochizuki

Match Thoughts:   You could tell they were going for the draw by the end of the match but overall it wasn’t bad.  A little too kicky for my personal taste but you know that is what you are getting with these guys.  At times it didn’t really feel like a tag team match as there wasn’t a ton of cooperation between partners, but the teams were kinda thrown together so at least it made sense.  A perfectly acceptable match, it not a bit repetitive at times, but really not my favorite match style and as always I prefer a definite ending if possible.  Score:  5.5

Match Thoughts:   A good hard hitting match that went straight to the point.  Not a lot of ‘feeling out’ here, just a bunch of brutes slugging it out with each other which sometimes in wrestling is all that you can hope for.  Some little selling issues here and there and Storm seemed a step below the rest, but generally just a fun mid-card match that didn’t do any harm even if it wasn’t memorable.  Score:  6.0

Match Thoughts: I barely recognized Nakajima, he is sporting some odd teenager goatee or something and he is a little thicker than I remember. Anyway, there were too many wrestlers here to get a real flow going but it wasn’t a bad match. It was an odd assortment of wrestlers, I can’t remember the last time I saw Sano and having representatives from so many different promotions meant that team work was a bit limited since they weren’t really familiar with each other. Koshinaka running around doing hip attacks off any elevated location he could find was fun though and Sekimoto looked impressive as usual. It just didn’t have much of a structure and at times just felt too much like “do a few moves, tag out, do a few moves, tag out” etc. Nothing exciting but not a bad showing by the veterans, one of those weird matches you’ll only see on an indy event like this. Score: 5.5

Match Thoughts: A really solid main event.  Hino is a boss, and the All Japan guys were fun. Takagi seemed a bit out of place as he isn’t the biggest guy (compared to everyone else in the match), but generally speaking he held his own. It was a bit repetitive in parts, lots of shoulderblocks and things like that, but once they really got into it the second half of the match the action never slowed down to the finish. Just for the sake of mixing things up I wish it wasn’t Doering and Miyahara in the home stretch, I know it probably made things easier to have the finish just include the two All Japan wrestlers but I’d like to have seen something more fresh. Still, a fun hard hitting match, lots of clubberin’ here, and not a bad way to end the show. Score: 7.0

Final Thoughts:

Best Match: Joe Doering and Shingo Takagi vs. Kento Miyahara and Yuji Hino. It wasn’t really memorable in the grand scheme of things or a match I’d recommend people go out of their way to see, but it was still a really fun main event match. It is always fun to see wrestlers from different promotions mixing it up, especially when one of those wrestlers is Hino as he simply doesn’t care what promotion you are from. He was going toe to toe with Doering as if he was just another wrestler, not a Triple Crown Champion. They also went non-stop from bell to bell and never let things slow down, and overall it was an entertaining match.

MVP:   Yuji Hino.  It is not unusual for Hino to be the MVP of the indy events he is on, because he just stands out as more of a force than everyone else. I mean here he is against the Triple Crown Champion and he is standing there trading shots with him, or going out of his way to attack him just to show that he isn’t afraid of him. And even though Doering is a lot taller than Hino, it didn’t seem unrealistic that he could stand with him as Hino has such a commanding presence. I just wish that he was in the match more as he was the one showing the most drive in the match. I don’t think he will ever get a chance in the big promotions but he has done a lot this year to show that he deserves it.

Overall: This Fortune event was a big step down from the last one. While on the last event it seemed like everyone was putting on maximum effort, this just felt like another indy show. The main event was good, and some of the other matches were solid but it lacked emotion for the most part. Sometimes random pairings work, other times it is lackluster and this event had more of the latter.   Just a lot of middling action with little standing out, nothing was really terrible but nothing will stick in your mind for more then a few days. Not much here I can recommend even though the main event was fun.
