The card was scheduled to feature a championship rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes for the featherweight title. Aldo earned a first round knockout victory over Mendes in the first meeting, which took place from Brazil. This card was expected for Los Angeles and the Staples Center.

Aldo suffered a stinger during training and will not be able to prepare for the fight in time to make the August 2 date. The rematch is expected to scheduled again, likely for October.

Instead of renaming future pay-per-view events, the UFC will go ahead as if the card took place, returning to pay-per-view in late August with UFC 177: Dillashaw vs. Barao 2.

The fights originally booked for UFC 176 will likely receive new spots on later cards. Some of the more noteworthy bouts are Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, former lightweight contender Gray Maynard vs. Fabricio Camoes and Bethe Correia vs. Shayna Baszler.
