– Wanderlei Silva had a nice little training session with one of the greatest amateur wrestlers of all-time recently, as “The Axe Murderer” rolled with Cael Sanderson. The current Penn State University wrestling head coach was a four-time NCAA champion and went on to win Olympic gold.
Silva remains without a fight lined up after being removed from a planned UFC 175 encounter with Chael Sonnen. Silva declined a drug test last month when officials with the Nevada Athletic Commission approached him at his gym in Las Vegas.
– Mark Munoz has been taken off the voting ballot for the UFC official rankings, according to several reports. Munoz was defeated by Gegard Mousasi recently, his second straight defeat. The MMA Report released a statement from the UFC regarding the decision.
“Mark is no longer under contract at this time,” the statement read. “However, we are negotiating towards a new agreement.”
Munoz fell to 13-5 overall with the loss to Mousasi, which was his second straight stoppage defeat. He was also finished by Lyoto Machida last year. On Twitter, Munoz stated a knee injury as the reason for his exit from the rankings.
“I have a grade 3 tear in my MCL and a strained ACL,” he answered. “So I’ll be out for a while.”
– Ross Pearson is filing an appeal with the New Mexico Athletic Commission over his loss to Diego Sanchez this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 42. Sanchez was awarded a split decision victory.
In a report by the Telegraph, Pearson and his head coach, Eric Del Fierro, have moved to have the result overturned. Most appeals are denied unless there was a referee error or failed drug test. The Brit has since watched the fight again and explained on Twitter he still does not understand the scoring.
