George Scott, one of the key figures in modern pro wrestling, has died at the age of 84. There was information late Monday night that Scott had died. His death was confirmed Tuesday morning via Greg Oliver of Slam Wrestling, who reported that Scott died of lung cancer.

The Canadian wrestler/booker started his wrestling career in the 1950s, traveling throughout various territories in the U.S. and Canada, including working for Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling promotion. Historically, Scott is most-remembered for his behind-the-scenes career as a booker in the 1970s and ’80s. Following a stint with Jim Crockett promotions, Scott joined the new WWF management team following Vince McMahon’s purchase from his father, Vince McMahon, Sr., in the early 1980s.

Scott booked the first WrestleMania and helped with the formation of “Saturday Night’s Main Event” on NBC, making him one of the key figures in WWF/E’s history. Scott’s legacy as a booker was second to none.

Ricky Steamboat, who worked for Scott in both Jim Crockett Promotions and later in the WWE, commented on George’s passing. Here’s what the Dragon had to say… “I am very sorry to hear that, he was a good man to me. He played an important part in starting my career in the Carolinas against Ric Flair, The Nature Boy”
